The beautiful superyacht has an exceptionally low fuel consumption and yet boasts excellent sea keeping qualities and luxurious accommodation.
Adastra’s 16 metre beam creates a spacious saloon area on the main deck which offers superb views through a panoramic window and accommodates a lounge area, dining table, and navigation station. A forward-facing door through the saloon window gives easy access to a large sunbed on the foredeck.
The main helm station, which has seating for two, is positioned in a raised pilot house situated between the aft deck and the saloon area and forms part of the cross beam structure.
The aft deck has a sofa and bar area to port and a dining area to starboard, further aft of this there is space for a 4.9 metre tender and directly below is a garage which can store a 3.1 metre tender. The garage door has been designed to fold out and create a large swim platform.
Below deck, extra space was created by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline. This area has been split into two sections with a full-width master cabin located aft with access from the deck saloon, and two further guest cabins, accommodation for the crew, and the galley located forward of the engine compartment.
Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests in total and up to six crew members.
The vessel has a fully automated fuel management system which includes an Alfa Laval system for cleaning the fuel.
The anchoring system is unique, with three anchors all driven by carbon fibre drum winches run by hydraulics. The primary anchor is a custom 130kg Bruce style anchor that deploys out of the starboard wing. The bow anchor is 80kg and deploys out of the bow with a carbon fibre arm. The third anchor is 60kg which deploys out of the port wing and will be used as a stern anchor.
The yacht’s superstructure is constructed from carbon fibre with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is Glass/Kevlar foam sandwich and the interior features lightweight oak cabinetry using honeycomb panels. To help reduce weight, virtually every aspect of the boat is custom built. This includes carbon fibre hatches, portlights, ladders and even hinges, which are all built specifically for the vessel.
Adastra takes the power trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted before. The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht led us to further research on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft. Extensive tank testing and radio controlled model tests in waves were carried out to analyze stability and performance. Outrigger height was optimized for ease of motion at sea, and a new outrigger shape was developed to increase stability in waves. We undertook a state-of-the-art structural analysis of all the major components in the yacht in order to achieve the light weight required for very low fuel consumption.
Today, Adastra remains one of the most iconic superyachts on the water.

Boat of the Week: Inside ‘Adastra,’ the Bonkers, Rule-Breaking Trimaran That Has Crisscrossed the Globe
The 140-foot "Adastra"'s triple hulls, light weight and shallow draft gives it exceptional seaworthiness and range. Plus, it looks super cool.

Adastra , or to the stars , as the poet Virgil once said, is not your average superyacht . With its striking spaceship profile, it might look like a concept. Delivered in 2012, this 140-footer has spent nearly a decade exploring the globe.
“We have been lucky enough to spend at least three months on board every year since the build, crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and exploring the more traditional cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean,” the owner, requesting anonymity, told Robb Report . “ Adastra is a truly stable and safe oceangoing yacht.” It also happens to be one of the most innovative vessels on the water.

British designer John Shuttleworth has won multiple awards, not to mention nonstop praise, for Adastra . What sets the boat apart are its unusual trio of silver hulls that resemble an outrigger canoe. “The structure is a major engineering achievement,” says Shuttleworth in a video describing the design. “Nobody had ever designed or built a boat like that.”
This one-off design maximizes interior space but has a minimal eco-footprint compared to other yachts its size. Courtesy Burgess Yachts
Built by McConaghy Boats in Zhuhai, China, the custom design went through structural analysis, while a computer model of Adastra was tested for wave impact, slamming and the potential durability of the outriggers running through big seas. Constructed from e-glass and Kevlar, these hulls are mated to a carbon-fiber superstructure, so the boat weighs only 49 tons, or the equivalent weight of a 60-foot conventional yacht. Since weight reduction was critical to the trimaran’s performance, McConaghy custom-designed all the components—hatches, port lights, ladders and hinges—to be made of carbon fiber. This lightweight design delivers hydrodynamic efficiency, stability and performance, as well as low fuel consumption and low environmental impact. “It uses a seventh of the amount of fuel” of conventional motor yachts its size,” said Shuttleworth.
“Our hope at the time was that the design would represent consciousness of the environmental issues facing the world, while also giving impetus to changing attitudes towards reducing carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption,” Shuttleworth told Robb Report .
Adastra has weathered 50-knot storms and boasts a vast 10,000-nautical mile range at 10 knots. Powered by a single 1,150 hp Caterpillar C18 engine, the boat’s top speed is 23 knots, with a friendly cruise of 17 knots. Adastra also has two 110-hp Yanmar outrigger engines to power the three onboard generators. For transoceanic crossings, the two 800-gph water makers keep the 730-gal. freshwater tanks full.
The design team used its curves and natural light to full effect, with the minimalist, Scandinavian-themed interior. Courtesy Burgess Yachts
Adastra ’s 3.9-foot draft can get into shallow areas that more traditional yachts can’t access, making her ideal for shallow-water areas like the Bahamas. The yacht also has a custom anchoring system, with three anchors that deploy across the bow, stern and along the main hull.
Despite its eco credentials, Adastra is still very much a luxury yacht. With the main hull flared over the water for additional space, the exterior layout allows guests to enjoy several secluded areas and superb communal spaces. The Scandinavian-influenced interior by Jepsen Designs, is minimalist and dominated by the natural light flowing in from curved, wraparound windows and skylights, highlighting the honey-colored woods and neutral color palette of the open-plan living areas. Adastra was designed for nine guests and up to six crew. The full-beam master cabin is aft, connected directly to the main salon, while two guest cabins and the galley are located near the engine compartment.
Adastra ’s 52.5-foot beam features a spacious aft deck with lounges and a sheltered alfresco dining area, while forward of the main salon, guests can relax on the roomy foredeck, with its large sunbed. The yacht’s garage door folds out to create a diving platform.

Adastra is currently listed through Burgess Yachts for $10 million. Here are more images.

On board with Anto Marden, owner of trimaran superyacht Adastra
The Hong Kong-based shipping magnate and superyacht owner Anto Marden tells Dominique Afacan that, while far-flung adventures in his 42.5 metre trimaran Adastra are fun, Asia is where his heart lies...
“It’s a beautiful day and I’m stuck in the bloody office!” Anto Marden is speaking to me from North Point, Hong Kong. Clearly, though, there are places he’d rather be, most likely on board his 42.5 metre trimaran Adastra . And who can blame him? Built to cross oceans and fuel adventure, she was the talk of the town when she was launched back in 2012, her John Shuttleworth-designed lines and futuristic silhouette making her look like some very stylish aliens had dropped right on to the South China Sea from outer space.
“She’s a massive head-turner,” says Marden. “Everywhere we go, the local paper writes a story and everybody always takes photographs of her. It’s like living in a goldfish bowl.” In reality, Marden lives on The Peak, Hong Kong’s exclusive mountainside neighbourhood where residents can survey the city’s extraordinary skyline over breakfast. It’s a view that must have completely transformed since Marden was born here 67 years ago, but the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, which he can see from his office today, has been around since day one, and sailing has always been a big part of his life.
“Dad always had a powerboat in Hong Kong,” remembers Marden. “We used to tow a little dinghy behind it when I was a kid, so I started sailing when I was very young.” His first clear memory of boating was aged seven, in Deep Water Bay, an upmarket enclave on Hong Kong’s south side, but soon after he swapped sandy beaches for the Surrey countryside and started his education in the UK. With both parents born in Shanghai, Marden had some seriously colonial roots, but the UK clearly left a favourable impression and he later enjoyed a few years of northern grit at Leeds University, where “greasy cobblestones, flat caps and mild ale” were the order of the day.
With a degree in Chinese and politics under his belt, and speaking fluent Mandarin, the obvious choice was to return to Asia and set up shop. Marden, though, was keen to keep things interesting and, after a stint on a farm working as a shepherd, he headed out to the Caribbean to sail Spronk cats from St Maarten to St Barths . “That’s when I really got into multihulls,” he explains.
Then, en route back to Hong Kong to start working for his father, fate intervened when he met a couple of guys in the Philippines who had just sailed a trimaran all the way across the Pacific. Marden was impressed. “I persuaded them to build a 16 metre Kelsall catamaran called Airmail for a friend in Manila,” he says. That boat is still afloat today and the same team also went on to build Marden’s 13.7 metre trimaran Mazinga , designed by Adastra visionary John Shuttleworth.
“ Mazinga still goes pretty well too. I was actually on board a couple of weeks ago in Manila Bay,” says Marden. Years later, having set up his own shipping company and become firmly established in Hong Kong, Marden decided to set the wheels in motion for a project that had been on his mind for a long time. “I’d always talked with John [Shuttleworth] about building a big power trimaran,” he says, “so we finally got it together and started planning it.”
Adastra , by all accounts, was a huge project and incredibly expensive – taking three years to build, although Shuttleworth’s vision was clear from the outset. “John is pretty handy with drawings. The first one he sketched looks remarkably like the final product,” says Marden. McConaghy Boats in Zhuhai was the obvious choice of shipyard, close enough for Marden to visit once a month and with a trusty reputation. “Old man McConaghy, who lived in Sydney, was the first person ever to build a composite boat using carbon fibre. They are the best for building big racing monohulls, so I was fairly certain that they could build a really strong composite boat,” Marden explains.
Marden took off on the yacht’s inaugural trip with wife Elaine. “We spent about six weeks sailing through Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. That sailing area is pretty much home territory,” says Marden, which is something of an understatement. In fact, he owns a cluster of private islands in the region, among them Pangkil and Pulau Joyo, both of which have proven enormously popular with Singaporean expats. “Both of the islands are located off Bintan,” says Marden, “and they are very successful. It’s all made out of driftwood. We rent them out, Pangkil in its entirety, Pulau Joyo more like a hotel.”
Adastra was built for crossing oceans so it was inevitable that adventures would open up far beyond Asia. Regattas, boat shows and sporting events like Formula One Grands Prix or the America’s Cup hold little appeal. “I have nothing against them but I wouldn’t want to make a destination out of something like that,” he says. Over in the Mediterranean , northern Mallorca gets his vote. “The top end of the island is pretty cool,” he says. “There are lovely cliffs up by Formentor and you can still get a pretty secluded anchorage.” Fiji is another favourite. “You don’t pay the harbour master there, you bring a bunch of kava and present it,” he says. “You sit down with the chief, have a little natter, hand over the kava, a rugby ball and a few sweets for the children, then you’ve checked in. You’re given the freedom of the village and the island, which is a nice way of doing it.”
Adastra is the perfect vessel for such far-flung travel, not least because she is so fuel efficient. “She just recently crossed the Atlantic from St Maarten to Vigo,” says Marden. “She was 12 days at sea averaging around 11 knots and we had enough fuel on board to turn around and go back again without refuelling, which is pretty cool. I think she did about 3.4 litres to the mile.”
Of course, with so many ocean hours under her belt, there have been hairy moments, although Marden wasn’t on board for one of the worst. “The boat was off Tahiti when all the portside portholes were smashed in by a wave and the boat started filling up with water. They managed to staunch it and she went back to Tahiti for repair. Other times we’ve had waves breaking over the hull, but ultimately she’s incredibly seaworthy.”
Seaworthy, but also extremely comfortable, largely thanks to Marden’s wife of 30 years, Elaine, who was heavily involved in the interior design. “Elaine is definitely integrated into the team!” says Marden. “We started out in a small sailing boat and now we’re in this nice, big, air-conditioned luxury yacht with five people looking after us, which is great.” Adastra has room for nine guests, although Marden warns other owners against carrying around too much accommodation. “Quite honestly it’s hard to get a whole bunch of people on board – people are busy, or it’s too far away, or they don’t have the time.” The couple have three grown-up daughters but they are scattered across the globe and aren’t able to join on board as often as their parents may wish. “They’re all working now, so it’s difficult. They have commitments,” explains Marden. “One of them is in LA in the movie business, another works for the Boiler Room as a camerawoman and the other is at the Royal College of Art in London.”
Together, they find they spend most of their time on the foredeck. “Out there we have an awning, loads of comfy cushions and beanbags, which are excellent on a boat – even though they are a little bit hard to get out of!” In Asia they find they spend a lot more time on board than off, which is just how Marden likes it. “If you’re in the Med, there are things to do; you can go and see lovely ruins, eat in fantastic restaurants, plus you can visit your mates who are living there. You get off the boat,” he explains. “In Indonesia and around that whole area, there’s basically nowhere to go. You have to be completely self-sufficient, you never see another yacht and that’s the way that I’ve grown to like it.”
The couple spend about eight weeks on board every year, but Marden reveals that they are thinking of selling Adastra in a couple of years. “I’m getting old and I can’t spread myself too thin,” says Marden, referring to the fact that he has a second boat, Hang Tuah , a 41 metre monohull designed by Nigel Irens , which he plans to keep. Before setting any selling plans in stone, though, there is more adventure in the diary this autumn with the pair heading off to the Greek Islands. “After that, she’ll go back across the Atlantic, through the canal and home,” says Marden. “The only reason we ever leave is to reaffirm our knowledge that Asia is the best.”

ASTRA Yacht for Sale
Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.
ASTRA is a super strong expedition vessel that can go anywhere in the world, regardless of the weather. After completing her 151 day circumnavigation via the five southern capes in May followed by an extensive shipyard period she is ready to depart for Antarctica or the Northwest Passage.
In Dag Pike’s article on ASTRA in Passagemaker magazine in March 2018 he said:
“... I would put this 80-footer in the category of the ultimate passagemaker - a vessel capable of taking on the world’s toughest oceans and coming out on top. She has to be one of the toughest boats of her size ever built... with traditional sheer lines and purposeful superstructure. No frills here, just a proper functional boat built for one of the toughest jobs in the world ”.
ASTRA is a 23.35 meter customized polar expedition vessel with the highest ice class rating and ice breaking capability. All this on a vessel that is just below 24 meters in length and also European CE certified.
According to construction drawings on board (and confirmed by thickness measurements carried out during the survey in September 2020), the hull shell plating thickness varies from 15mm on the bottom plates tapering through 13, 11 and 9mm on the outer shell plating and deck areas. UTI testing (Sep 2020) indicated less than 4% reduction in the original shell plating, in part attributed to ASTRA having operated in fresh water in the Baltic for her initial 22 years.
She is powered by a low/medium speed Mitsubishi main engine (M.E.) of 1,350 BHP, that is started by compressed air at 30 Bar, in the same manner as a merchant vessel. You do have to remember that ASTRA was built as strongly as was feasible for a vessel of her size and she is a big step up from the small scale electrics and battery starts commonly found on other vessels below 24 m.
The main engine goes through a 3:1 reduction gearbox, reducing the RPM at the propeller to 1/3 of that at the engine. The propeller shaft is approx. 12” in diameter and, on seeing it, you start to get a real sense of her strength and design capability for adverse weather. The propeller itself is a 4 bladed controllable pitch propeller (CPP) of 1.72 m in diameter and the rudder is a high performance Schilling rudder (+/- 64°) that can be operated either hydraulically or electrically.
The Schilling rudder, combined with a 100kw hydraulic bow thruster, provides incredible maneuverability for a vessel of ASTRA’s size. Fitted with 4 conning positions from the navigation bridge, the vessel can be handled from Port, Centre and Starboard (looking forward) and the centerline aft when maneuvering astern.
Anyone that has ever owned a SAAB or VOLVO will have had the opportunity to appreciate Swedish engineering. A substantial hydraulic system is at the heart of the ship’s systems on ASTRA and hydraulics power the following systems: - Bow Thruster - Anchor Windlass - Towing Winch - Stern Flap - Forward Crane - Aft Crane - Fire Pump
The key systems on board are provided with a back-up system that provides 100% redundancy, including: - Engines - Steering - Bilge Pumps - Air Compressors - Power Generation.
Built as a rescue vessel, ASTRA is incredibly stable and has no ‘point of vanishing stability’. When fully laden, with all tanks full, she still has a GM of 0.98m.
In addition to air conditioning, ASTRA has substantial heating capability from her CTC boiler (that can run electrically or from diesel) and is very cozy onboard, with ample heating radiators and lots of hot water. Heating is one of the areas where her ice class comes in to play, with heating blowers in the foc’sle store and steering flats, hot water discharge points from the engine cooling discharge to deck if required for clearing ice (lancing) and, running just below the bulwarks, is a heating coil for clearing ice from the scuppers. This has stainless steel pipework, as is common for the majority of systems onboard.
During ASTRA’s refit in 2017, aside from the work you might expect in a repair period, the following major additions were made: - Air conditioning in all areas - new Portuguese bridge - new Furuno navigational equipment - new 4 automatic rotating stabilizers - large additional battery banks (to be able to lie at anchor without auxiliaries)
- increased fuel capacity
- fresh water maker
- new oak cabin soles - new toilet and shower facility on the lower deck
With the new MagnusMaster rotating stabilizers fitted in Sep 2017, even in seas of 4-5 meters in height and it was remarked that “... this went largely unnoticed, with coffee cups staying firm on the table and the passengers able to get on with their normal activities. The vessel was only moving steady slightly up and down without rolling side to side ”.
ASTRA's owner is a Master Mariner who has prepared her to an extent this broker has never seen aboard any yacht. She has my absolute highest recommendation. It has been a highlight of my career assisting with her purchase and now an honor to represent her.

ASTRA's engine room occupies over half her length with plenty of room to work around for maintaince. Located amidships/aft, the engine room is an ideal location to work in almost all weathers. The electrical switchboard and new 23 kW Cummins Onan genset are in the control room removed from any contaminants. In the event of an engine room fire, the genset would be safeguarded and would be able to provide electrical power for communications and navigation equipment. Access to the Engine Room is through watertight doors leading to the control room and the workshop. An escape hatch to the aft deck is also provided. A soft patch is fitted around the escape hatch to facilitate removing large equipment from the engine room.
There are 3 sources of generating power from the shaft generator, Volvo Penta and Onan. The 2021 MECC ALTE 50 kVA shaft generator is a big plus in that the running hours on the other generators is not increased and it is so amply sized that it can power everything on board.
A last generation mechanical engine, the MITSUBISHI at 8 tons is an incredibly large engine for a vessel of this size. It is coupled with a very heavy duty gearbox and 1718 mm controllable pitch propeller in a 2021 nozzle. If there was an issue with one cylinder head you can work on that cylinder on its own rather than having to lift the whole bank of cylinders.
The water maker only needs to run four hours daily for the ship's complement's needs and Silver-ion dosing of the fresh water ensures purity. Two complete independent air-conditioning systems provide 100% redundancy.
The workshop, with ample space to carry out repairs even has a lathe and proper drill press.
There are two separate systems (Main Engine or Volvo) to run the hydraulics and the Volvo Penta also provides get home power to the main shaft.
ASTRA has one electric and one hydraulic steering pump. Having one that is hydraulic, powered off the main engine, means there is less electrical demand for the generator. The hvirtually maintenance free rotary vane steering gear requires less space to fit and there is not the associated hydraulic oil leaks that occur with steering gears of the hydraulic ram type.
Following her circumnavigation all equipment was fully serviced.

ASTRA is a 23.35 metre customised polar expedition vessel with the highest ice class rating and ice breaking capability. All this on a vessel that is just below 24 metres in length and also European CE certified.
According to construction drawings aboard (and confirmed by thickness measurements carried out during the survey in September 2020), the hull shell plating thickness varies from 15mm on the bottom plates tapering through 13, 11 and 9 mm on the outer shell plating and deck areas. UTI testing (Sep 2020) indicated less than 4% reduction in the original shell plating, in part attributed to ASTRA having operated in fresh water in the Baltic for her initial 22 years.
The Schilling rudder, combined with a 100kW hydraulic bow thruster, provides incredible manoeuvrability for a vessel of ASTRA’s size. Fitted with 4 conning positions from the navigation bridge, the vessel can be handled from Port, Centre and Starboard (looking forward) and the centreline aft when manoeuvring astern.
During ASTRA’s refit in 2017, aside from the work you might expect in a repair period, the following major additions were made: - Air conditioning in all areas - new Portuguese bridge - new Furuno navigational equipment - new 4 automatic rotating stabilisers - large additional battery banks (to be able to lie at anchor without auxiliaries)
With the new MagnusMaster rotating stabilisers fitted in Sep 2017, even in seas of 4-5 metres in height and it was remarked that “... this went largely unnoticed, with coffee cups staying firm on the table and the passengers able to get on with their normal activities. The vessel was only moving steady slightly up and down without rolling side to side ”.
The key systems aboard are provided with a back-up system that provides 100% redundancy, including: - Engines - Steering - Bilge Pumps - Air Compressors - Power Generation.
In addition to air conditioning, ASTRA has substantial heating capability from her CTC boiler (that can run electrically or from diesel) and is very cosy onboard, with ample heating radiators and lots of hot water.
ASTRA's accommodations are appropriate for a polar exploration yacht with low maintenace in mind and comfort at sea.
On the maindeck are the saloon, galley, laundry, skipper/owner's cabin and large toilet compartment with stall shower.
Three watertight doors lead to the decks. There are external stairs to the engine room and also the wheelhouse. There are four double cabins on the accommodation deck along with another toilet compartment with stall shower. In 2021, the lower saloon as shown on the attached drawings has been replaced with a 1500 litre freezer and lockers sized for long life milk containers and dry stores.
During the circumnavigation, the crew enjoyed freshly prepared meals in all conditions as the galley is highly functional with the cook kept secure.
