Seago SeaGuard lifejacket – tested

  • April 30, 2022

The Seago Seaguard 165N automatic lifejacket looks like a quietly unassuming and modest piece of safety kit. We put it through our series of shore based and pool tests to see if it could match the performance of lifejackets at twice the price. The answer is yes it does. Keep reading to see why!

Product Overview

Overall rating:, seago seaguard 165n automatic lifejacket.

  • Excellent value for money. The cross over bladder design works well. There's room in the casing to add a sprayhood and light. Also comes in a version with a harness loop
  • There’s a few little snaggy areas where straps or toggles could be better tucked away.

Seago Seaguard 165N auto lifejacket

This modest looking Seago Seaguard lifejacket seems quietly unassuming and certainly doesn’t shout look at me when compared to a whole load of other lifejackets we have in our group test. But we should never judge a lifejacket by its cover.

Seago Seaguard lifejacket

Dry Testing

The Seago isn’t entering any awards for fashion, but that’s not why we’re here is it? It’s the second lightest on test at 817grams. The flat styling of this lifejacket makes it unobtrusive to wear and its simple design is lightly sculpted around the neck to make it more comfortable for longer periods of use.

The side clip buckle is popular with our testers and scores well for ease of fastening and unfastening with cold hands or whilst wearing gloves.

Adjustment is easy and the surplus webbing is neatly stowed in an elastic band sewn captive to the webbing.

The lifting strop is sewn externally, so it’s not tucked away inside the casing and is always present, which might be a bit of a snagging risk for some.

The casing has enough surplus capacity to fit a sprayhood and light. The Seago Seaguard is also available as a harness model for a just £10 more. This seems like excellent value to me.

Seago Seaguard lifejacket during pool testing

Pool Testing

Mike says the best feature of this lifejacket is the cross over bladder design which works really well at avoiding waves funneling up and hitting you in the face when in the water.

He notes that the retro reflective tape on this is the least visible as it is towards the sides rather than on top and like many of the lifejackets in this range, it doesn’t come with a light as standard.

The rate of inflation was excellent. He comments that the manual toggle was tucked away and was initially tricky to find. (This was as a result of our dry testing where we looked at the possible pitfalls of having an exposed trigger toggle and what real-world users often do with them, which is to tuck them up inside the casing which then makes them much harder to locate when needed. -Ed) When lifejackets don’t provision specifically for safe stowage or toggles, users will invariably find a way which often isn’t the safest way.

We’d like to see a small velcro tab, as seen on other lifejackets, to secure the toggle a little better to avoid it being tucked away.

The lifting strop is in red and was found after a little rummage around, under the lifejacket.

Top, Seago Seaguard, Right, Spinlock deckvest lite, Bottom, Crewsaver crewfit pro, Left, Baltic Athena

The lifejacket comes with an older style trigger mechanism using longer slimmer CO2 bottles rather than the dumpy ones and uses a black auto capsule with the pop-off green plastic end piece. Most other lifejackets have moved over to the grey capsule which doesn’t eject plastic bits when it is triggered.

We were impressed with the in water performance of this lifejacket.  The reflectors slightly let this down in terms of visibility but retro fitting more is pretty common and reflective tape is available from chandleries.

Repacking it was very easy.

How our lifejacket scored on average out of 10 for each of our criteria 7 – Adjust speed ease difficulty 7 – Fastening buckle ease with gloves 8 – Comfort 6 – Practicality. bulk snagging 7 – Positioning of essential items NA – Accessory attachment / kill cord loop 5 – Night view / reflectors / light (if fitted) 8 – Ease of checking bottle / trigger status 9 – Unpacking / repacking 4 – Style 8 – In water score 69% Total as a percentage

We were very pleased with the performance of this lifejacket. Whilst it doesn’t look super stylish, it doesn’t offend either. Where it excels is as a lifejacket in the water and that’s where it really counts. Highly recommended as a best budget option for safety on the water.

Bayesian superyacht sinking: Horror of those trapped in bedrooms described by former captain

Italian prosecutors continue their investigation after divers recovered video equipment from the luxury yacht, article bookmarked.

A former captain of the Bayesian has described the terrifying obstacles facing those trapped in the cabins as the Bayesian superyacht overturned killing seven.

Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told The Telegraph : “Those who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation.

“The storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,” he said adding he had spoken to traumatised crew members.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.”

It came as divers race to retrieve Mike Lynch’s personal hard drives locked in a safe on the ocean floor, according to reports.

Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that the tech billionaire, whose clients included MI5, the NSA and the Israeli secret service, didn’t trust confidential documents on the cloud and kept two encrypted hard drives in a safe which now lies 49 metres below sea level.

Mike Lynch ‘likely died of suffocation’ after running out of oxygen on sunken yacht

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is likely to have died of suffocation after running out of oxygen, according to a source close to the investigation.

They cited initial examinations carried out on Saturday after the businessman’s body was recovered from the family yacht that sank off Sicily ’s coast last month during a freak weather incident.

Mr Lynch died alongside his 18-year-old daughter, the boat’s chef and four others , who were onboard the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal after a lengthy decade-long legal battle.

Initial results of examinations of Hannah Lynch’s body on Saturday were inconclusive, the source told the Reuters news agency.

Mike Lynch’s yacht was ‘unsinkable’, says boss of company who built boat

Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, said there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian and it is “one of the safest boats in the world”.

The Bayesian, a 184-ft superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes after a freak tornado struck.

“The ship sank because it took on water, from where investigators will have to say,” Mr Costantino told television news programme TG1.

He suggested that the sinking was down to a series of human errors.

The CEO said that had the crew shut all doors and hatches, turned on the engine, lifted the anchor, lowered the keel and turned the yacht to face the wind, they would have suffered “zero damage”.

He added that data showed it took 16 minutes from when the wind began for it to sink.

Cartoisio said the tragedy will be even more painful if the sinking was caused by “behaviours that were not aligned to the responsibilities that everyone needs to take in shipping”.

£4billion deal to purchase Mike Lynch’s Darktrace

Darktrace shares are set to stop trading publicly at the end of September, after the company set a timetable for its blockbuster private equity takeover to be completed.

The private equity group Thoma Bravo struck an almost 5.31 billion dollar (£4.3 billion) deal to buy Darktrace in April.

It marks one of the biggest take-private deals for a London-listed company in recent years, and will see Darktrace leave the FTSE 100 on October 1.

Founded in 2013, Cambridge-based Darktrace is a cybersecurity firm best known for using artificial intelligence to scan for hacks and data leaks inside IT networks.

A prominent company in the UK tech landscape, it was among the firms represented at the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in November, where world leaders and major tech firms met to discuss the potential threat of artificial intelligence.

The update comes after Poppy Gustafsson stepped down as chief executive earlier in September amid the takeover.

Ms Gustafsson, who co-founded the business in 2013, will be replaced as chief executive by Jill Popelka, the company said.

Ms Gustafsson helped to set up the Cambridge-based company in 2013 alongside Autonomy founder Mike Lynch.

Mr Lynch, and his daughter Hannah, were among seven people to die after the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month.

Professor fears more deaths by ‘medicanes’ after Bayesian tragedy

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel, told the Mirror that storms dubbed ‘medicanes’ - Mediterranean hurricanes - could cause similar sinkings like the Bayesian superyacht.

He said: “It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it’s when and where.

“In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 “Daniel” medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there.

“The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms.”

Bodies of Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah flown back to families after Bayesian superyacht sinking

The bodies of those who died after the billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht sunk off the coast of Sicily have been flown back to their families by private jet.

Italian publication Giornale di Sicilia reported post-mortem examinations were completed at a Palermo hospital and the bodies have now been returned.

My colleague Tom Watling reports:

'Mike Lynch files may be target for hostile spy agencies’

Divers are searching the sea floor for Mike Lynch’s high-tech hard drives before they can fall into enemy hands reports La Repubblica - Italy’s second-biggest newspaper.

Sources told the paper the disks held: “the great digital archive of the IT entrepreneur whose clients included the British MI5, the American NSA and the Israeli services”.

The Italian newspaper said the “super drives” are protected by “cutting-edge encryption”.

The Sun reported the drives now could be a target for the hostile spy agencies of Russia, China, and Iran as they seek to steal valuable secrets.

Captain gives his account of tragic sinking

Captain James Cutfield previously gave his terrifying account before invoking his right to remain silent.

According to Correire, he told prosecutors: “Seaman Griffiths came to wake me up and told me that there were 20 knots of wind.

“I looked at the instruments and indeed that was the case. I went out immediately and asked them to warn everyone because I didn’t like the situation.”

He said the Bayesian tilted 45 degrees “and remained like that for a bit and then suddenly fell to the right.

“We were catapulted into the sea”.

Seaman Matthew Griffiths, 22, said: “We somehow climbed back up to the bridge and tried to form a human chain to save those who managed to reach that gap from the accommodation deck ... they were struggling on the walls because the boat was lying in the water.

“The first in the chain was the captain who stretched down. He helped everyone, the ladies, the mother with the little girl ... But we were sinking and unfortunately some didn’t make it .”

Mr Griffiths joins fellow Brit Tim Parker-Eaton, 56, and Kiwi skipper James Cutfield, 51, on the official list of those being formally investigated for shipwreck and multiple manslaughter.

Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step.

Divers hunting for clues on how Mike Lynch’s superyacht sank make discovery

Italian Navy divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from the wreckage of billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht that could explain how it sank.

The British tech tycoon ’s boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning . It is now lying 50m below the surface.

Jabed Ahmed reports:

seago yachting uk

The video equipment recovered could show if the crews left doors open on the Bayesian superyacht, which might have allowed the vessel to flood

Former captain claims Mike Lynch’s wife was always concerned about boat safety

The wife of Mike Lynch, 57-year-old Angela Bacares managed to escape to safety after suffering cuts from broken glass as she went to try and save her husband and daughter, according to la Repubblica.

The newspaper said she told doctors that at 4am, the boat had tilted and she and her husband were woken up.

Former captain Stephen Edwards told The Telegraph, Ms Bacares “always wants to know what is happening and what the crew are doing”.

“She is always the first person to come up to the bridge if she hears us scuttling about up there. That could explain why she was saved and Mike wasn’t.”

Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah were ‘part of a united, vibrant, loving family’

Family friends of Mike and Hannah Lynch have said the father and daughter were part of a “united, vibrant, loving family” – with the teenager remembered as a “diamond in a sea of stars” and the tech mogul as a brilliant storyteller.

Mr Lynch was the creator of software giant Autonomy and had been cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud related to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

His daughter Hannah had recently finished her A-levels and was due to study at Oxford University.

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, said: “Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars. Bright, beautiful and always shining.

“What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

“While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

“I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive.”

It is understood Ms Murray was rescued after disaster struck the yacht.

A man had to be treated by paramedics after a motorboat crashed into a breakwater. An air ambulance landed at Mount Batten this afternoon after the boat dramatically ran aground just metres from where a woman was sitting.

Eyewitnesses say the vessel left Sutton Harbour this afternoon (Tuesday, September 17), appearing to intend to sail around Mount Batten. However, it was later photographed aground at the breakwater.

Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI were called to the incident at around 2.50pm today. A spokesperson for HM Coastguard told PlymouthLive that a vessel was reported to have run aground at the Mount Batten breakwater.

An eyewitness said he and his wife saw the motorboat heading out of Sutton Harbour through the turntable bridge. "From there it was heading towards Mount Batten breakwater, presumably to go past it, to head on out," they said.

"After a couple of minutes a pilot boat tied up and two guys got off, jumped into a twin engine boat and with great haste, went chasing off in the same direction. By the time we walked up to Dutton's Cafe, the motor boat was already on the rocks."

Another witness said: "My daughter has just witnessed a boat crash into the rocks four meters away from her."

South Western Ambulance Service vehicles were seen in the area and video footage also shows a helicopter from Devon Air Ambulance landing. One man was taken into the care of paramedics, but it is unclear if he was then taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard coordinated the response to a motor vessel reported to have gone aground at the Mount Batten breakwater, Plymouth, at about 2.50pm on 17 September.

"The vessel was moved to a pontoon where the man was taken into the care of the South Western Ambulance Service. Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI's inshore lifeboat from Plymouth attended."

A woman tragically lost her life after a shark attack on a catamaran, despite being rushed to a hospital in the Canary Islands. The 30 year old German national was airlifted to a Gran Canaria hospital by a Spanish Air Force helicopter but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

She was officially pronounced dead upon arrival at Doctor Negrin Hospital in Las Palmas last night. It's reported that the shark bit off her leg while she was aboard a catamaran in international waters, some 278 miles south-west of Gran Canaria's airport and approximately 110 miles east of Dakhla city in the disputed territory of Western Sahara, currently under Moroccan occupation.

The vessel she was crewing has been identified as the British-flagged Dalliance Chichester, which had departed from the Spanish holiday island on September 14. Spanish Coastguards reportedly informed their Moroccan counterparts and UK coastguards due to the origin of the catamaran.

However, local reports suggest that Moroccan authorities declined to transfer the injured woman to Rabat for emergency medical treatment. The unnamed woman was pronounced dead just after 11pm yesterday following a cardiac arrest in the Spanish military helicopter.

The shark attack is believed to have occurred around 4pm the same day. This incident follows a series of shark sightings in June that led to the closure of several Spanish resorts, with one resort forced to shut down mere hours after local officials had given tourists the all-clear to return, reports the Mirror .

Bathers were swiftly ordered out of the water at Melenara Beach on Gran Canaria's east coast after a police drone spotted a hammerhead shark off the beach.

The neighbouring Salinetas beach was next to follow suit, with Playa de San Agustin not far behind, as lifeguards raised a red flag just two hours later when a tourist snapped a photo of the unmistakable fin of a shark protruding from the water.

One of the shark sightings was reportedly made by a tourist near a sea-facing restaurant named Balcon de San Augustin.

Red Cross officials later confirmed they had also seen it.
