“Seven years later and I got the same friends,” Lil Yachty croaks on “All In,” an enjoyable posse cut near the end of Summer Songs 2 . Seven years ago I was 20, two years older than Yachty is now, and I remain friends with only about 25 percent of my social circle from back then—where does the time go? While Yachty is rapping about coming up to the top with his team intact, the line invites personal interpretation: What were you doing seven years ago? What was your life like at 18?

Age plays a huge part in enjoying (or not enjoying) Yachty’s music. He shouts “We are the youth!” on the mixtape’s very first track; he calls himself the “king of the teens” on another song that sounds like superhero theme music. The Atlanta rapper has made some uncomfortable appearances on New York radio shows like “ The Breakfast Club ” and “ Ebro in the Morning ,” where he was prodded and treated with a whiff of condescension—the weird kid in class with red dreads who embodies a new movement that strikes fear in older people. It all seems like an unfair burden put upon a teenager who doesn’t really deserve such high-strung generational introspection and skepticism. While Summer Songs 2 is better than Lil Boat , his breakthrough release from earlier this year, the music is still too flimsy to garner such “what is wrong with these kids?” hand-wringing.

That said, of his current burgeoning peers—guys like Lil Uzi Vert , Playboi Carti, 21 Savage , and Kodak Black —Yachty is looking like the one most poised for crossover success. His dominant feature on the D.R.A.M. song “ Broccoli ” sits at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and his light-hearted persona often shines on songs that are loose and feature less rapping. Which is fine. He gets in trouble, though, when gunning for some kind of respectability in traditional hip-hop circles.

“For Hot 97” mostly falls flat, because Yachty simply can’t keep up with the beat. He doesn’t command a verse as strongly as most of the guests on the tape, like Chicago’s G Herbo , who flattens “Up Next 3,” and Offset, who offers a silky verse on the woozy banger “DipSet.” In contrast, Yachty frequently falls off-tempo—it can be unpleasant to listen to. His high-pitched voice works in his favor on slower cuts but doesn’t blend well when he’s shouting and lagging behind the track. It’s a bit discomfiting—you want to root for the kid, but it’s frustrating to hear him undermining his strengths so frequently.

Summer Songs 2 clicks into focus on spacey, weirder songs like the slow-blooming “IDK,” where Yachty grapples with sudden fame, and the despondent breakup jam “Yeah Yeah,” which features the oddly memorable passage: “Dick so good turn that ho to George/That mean she get curious.” Yachty cops to being a student of Soulja Boy and Lil B (see the #based philosophy of “Life Goes On”) but he’s also got a Tyler, the Creator sense of humor, from his irreverent videos to opening the album by impersonating his “uncle,” Darnell Boat, who sounds like a character from the “Loiter Squad” cutting-room floor. And something about the tape’s late run of songs, when things slow down and the beats wilt, reminds me of chillwave’s idyllic vision of the West Coast, all beaches and girls and sun-soaked afternoons—potent, dreamy stuff that appeals directly to the sensibilities of teens and college loafers. Yachty is delivering an aesthetic , which is catnip to some (mostly those 25 and under) and repellent to others. But if you’re locked in, Summer Songs 2 can be a lot of fun.

On closer “So Many People,” after playing a series of wide-eyed, wistful testimonials to his music, Yachty lowers his voice to a near whisper while a simple, forceful drum pattern kicks—a startling moment of vulnerability, even when he boasts, “I just put both of my feet in the door/I did it two times faster than these other niggas.” It’s the kind of pathos you get from young adults—the confidence is there, but the insecurity and uncertainty of teenagedom still looms. If Summer Songs 2 buckles under the weight of an Apple Music imprimatur and deafening hype, try to think about being 18 again, when you only wanted to listen to yourself.

As with Lil Boat, released only four months earlier, follow-up Summer Songs 2 consists almost strictly of tracks lobbed like half-baked pies at the face of a hip-hop purist. The bulk of these rhymes, as with those of the debut, are willfully juvenile -- Lil Yachty is only 18 -- delivered with an aloof irreverence paired with lethargic, hollow rhythms. Purpose-wise, provocation is second only to goofing off. There's even a track titled "DipSet," after the like-named divisive crew whose Juelz Santana, compared to Yachty, is long-winded. All of the affected carelessness seems pretty taxing. The youngster sounds more natural, like he's actually putting forth less effort, when he projects enough to signify alertness. In the central track, over a lumbering beat ornamented with a shrill jack-in-the-box melody, Yachty quizzically trills "Why do they hate on me?," holding the "a" in "hate" as a rascally child would scrape a fork across a bowl. He figures he's a target because he's paid. There might be more to it than that. Lacking anything as memorable as the breakthrough "One Night" and "Minnesota," this mixtape succeeds only at sustaining the rapper's 2016 visibility. © Andy Kellman /TiVo

Lil Yachty and his former artist Karrahbooo 's feud escalates with bullying accusations.

Lil Yachty and Karrahbooo Continue Throwing Shots at Each Other

On Sunday (Aug. 25), Lil Yachty hopped on his Instagram Story to address Karrahbooo's claims about writing her own rhymes and being bullied. Karrahbooo was part of Yachty's Concrete Boys collective. Although Yachty didn't directly address the 27-year-old rhymer, his message suggested that he clapped back at her allegations.

"Don't throw rocks and hide your hands," Boat wrote on his IG Story post below.

After catching wind of the Atlanta rapper's message, Karrahbooo posted a lengthy statement on her Instagram Story about supporting others in times of need and alluded to Yachty picking on her.

"I'll never forget this feeling, this chapter of my life. I'll never be the same," Karrahbooo penned in her IG Story. "I'll never forget who was there for me. I done chopped people out/spent my last/slapped folks 4 ni**as. I ride every time naturally, but that's just how I am. Nobody owe me sh*t tbh I'm just taking a mental note. I can't even look at most people da same way. To know the truth and watch a grown man with 12 million followers overly lie on my name and publicly bully me for literally no reason at all while I silently been conquering all da sh*t ni**as been throwing me this whole time behind closed doors. I'll never ignore the signs again, and I will never stop, no matter how much they hate me."

In her next IG Story post, Karrahbooo responded to Yachty's aforementioned message, insisting that they could discuss their issues on the phone. She also stated that she just wanted to make peace with individuals in the music scene.

"I never threw rocks and u have my number you big grown b**ch. Leave me alone literally @lilyachty," she typed in her IG Story post. "I never said nothing about sh*t and I still ain't say nothing 'bout what's really going on. I don't want no beef wit you industry people. Just move on wit ur life. Stop tryna bring me down when I stay out the way. I'm done talking. You got it. Yo character gone speak for itself."

Why are lil yachty and karrahbooo beefing.

Things went south between Lil Yachty and Karrahbooo after a fan shared a post on social media and claimed that after bumping into Karrahbooo at a restaurant, the rapper told her she was kicked out of Concrete Boys and bullied during her time on the label . On Aug. 22, Lil Yachty went live on Instagram and denied Karrahbooo's bullying allegations . Boat said Karrahbooo was actually the one bullying others.

"Tell people how you talk to people," Yachty said in his heated video below. "How you tell my security guard, 'Oh, you homeless. You work for me. You're poor. We above you.' You talk to people like they nothing...Tell people how you verbally abuse people. How you said you gon' spit on me when you see me."

"I been letting you do this whole thing where you act like you a princess and you sweet," he continued. "Stop the front, bro. We have withheld your actions since the beginning of me giving you this career. What the f**k are we talking about, bro. You don't even do nothing. It's so crazy to me, bro. ’Cause I've given you a career, and from time to time, you just disrespect me.

Boat then mentioned that Karrahbooo has a $900,000 debt to his label. Afterward, the Quality Control rhymer leaked his reference track to Karrahbooo's 2023 On The Radar Freestyle , suggesting that she didn't pen the lyrics.

Karrahbooo Claps Back at Lil Yachty's Claims About Writing Her Lyrics

On Aug. 23, Karrahbooo went on her Instagram Story to clap back at Yachty by sharing three songs she claimed to write and highlighted their streaming counts.

"Running Late," boasted over 7 million streams, "Where Yo Daddy," garnered 3 million streams and the On the Radar Concrete Cypher freestyle hit nearly 3 million streams.

Karrahbooo captioned the image, "put it on yo kid i ain't these songs [M]iles[.] Stop da cap and leave me out ur internet shenanigans [tears of joy emoji]."

She continued: "Stop bullying me big dawg [tears of joy emoji] i never said nothing u letting random fans get in yo head man up."

During her performance at the Dig in Day Festival in Chicago on Aug. 24, Karrahbooo suggested that Yachty's ghostwriting claims were false.

"Who ain't write it, who ain't write it," she rapped during her performance in the video below.

Drake Surprise Releases Three New Songs, Features Playboi Carti

Drake has surprise released a trio of new songs through his burner Instagram account @plottttwistttttt on Friday, weeks after he leaked three other songs earlier this month.

The new songs are titled ""Circadian Rhythm," "SOD," and "No Face," the latter of which features Playboi Carti. "SOD" appears to be the same song as "Supersoak," the track that Lil Yachty had originally leaked to Twitch streamer Kai Cenat last month. Yachty said that there were sample clearance issues on the track as creator Mr. Hotspot had religious objections over the sample use. Yachty as been completely removed from the version that Drake shared on Friday.

The three tracks are just the latest in a cryptic rollout of new music from the rapper. Earlier this month, he shared several other unreleased songs - "It's Up," featuring Young Thug and 21 Savage, "Blue Green Red," and "Housekeeping Knows," featuring Latto - along with behind the scenes videos, and unreleased cover art on the website 100gigs.org.

The songs break up a quiet summer for Drake, who's been relatively low key since his public rap beef with Kendrick Lamar, whose vicious "Not Like Us" diss track became the one of the biggest songs of the summer and spent two weeks atop the Hot 100.

It's unclear if or when Drake's new songs will be made available for purchase or on streaming services. A rep for Drake didn't immediately respond to Rolling Stone ‘s request for comment.

Drake Drops Three New Tracks on His Finsta

Over the weekend, Drake fans were treated to three new songs. The Boy surprise released three tracks on his Finsta @plottttwistttttt including “Circadian Rhythm,” “SOD” and “No Face” featuring Playboy Carti .

With the Kendrick Lamar beef taking over the summer this year, Drake appears ready to move on and focus on the music. While it is uncertain when the tracks were recorded, some fans may remember streamer Kai Cenat previewing “SOD” as “Supersoak,” which initially featured a verse from Lil Yachty . With Yachty’s verse, he tried to clear a sample from Mr. HotSpot but was unsuccessful, causing his verse to be completely removed from the track. Fans with a keen eye have also suspected that there might be a feud brewing between Drake and Yachty after they noticed Yachty no longer follows Drake.

GloRilla Is Facing Backlash Over Using The R-Word In An Unreleased Track

While hip-hop’s most acclaimed critics declared Kendrick Lamar the winner of the beef that captivated social media’s audio streaming throughout the spring and beginning of the summer, anyone that hears “Circadian Rhythm” could think it may be an answer to “6:16 in LA” where Lamar raps “Often, I know this type of power is gon’ cost / But I live in circadian rhythms of a shooting star.”

The response could be in the name.

The Canadian never forgets, which he reminds listeners on “No Face.” On this track, he raps “I’m just so happy that n—s who envied and held that shit in got to finally show it / I’m over the moon, yeah, we’ll see you boys soon.”

These three tracks come on the heels of new content Drake released through 100gigs.org. That footage included behind the scenes footage, clips of the artist in the studio, unreleased music, and additional collaborations.
