As a nautical sports watch, the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph combines timeless elegance with ruggedness and a 6 bar water-resistance. These characteristics make it an extremely versatile timepiece that exudes a beautiful figure both on water and on land. The filigree bezel and flat case ring lend the stainless-steel case with its 44-millimetre diameter expressly elegant proportions. The dial of this sporty chronograph impresses with typical Portugieser design features such as the characteristic minute scale and the appliquéd Arabic numerals. This model combines a blue dial with rhodium-plated hands and appliqués. The IWC-manufactured 89361 calibre with flyback function displays the stopped times combined in a single totalizer at "12 o’clock" and features a power reserve of 68 hours. The high-quality stainless-steel bracelet with polished and satin-finished surfaces ensures a perfect fit on the wrist.

About the Watch

The IWC Yacht Club belonged to a series of watches introduced in the 1970’s under the “SL” family name. They were designed by legendary watchmaker Gerald Genta.  Genta collaborated with many of the world’s utmost  watch manufacturers and was the artist behind many iconic watches. He is the genius behind the Audermars Piguet Royal Oak as well as the Patek Philippe Nautilus, and many others.  His signature designs are emblematic of the 1970’s era.

This 1970’s Yacht Club is in pristine condition and is particularly special because it features an automatic movement.  The early Yacht Clubs utilized an IWC automatic movement, but those were quickly replaced by a quartz movement. It is rare to find a vintage example with an automatic movement in such amazing condition. 

Every collector needs a Genta design in their collection and this IWC Yacht Club is a great entry to his esteemed portfolio.

IWC Yacht Club

1972 vintage IWC Yacht Club 811AD, automatic movement and with beads of rise GF stell band.

For a collector, having at least one of these vintage IWC Yacht Club is a must. It is one of the last representative of the golden age of mechanical wrist watches right before the quartz crisis. While the IWC Yacht Club was probably one of the best selling IWC models in the pre-quartz history of IWC, everything afterwards was more or less a commercial disaster be it the other club watches (Polo Club, Golf Club) or the legendary Ingenieur SL 1832.

One of my favorite vintage brands and one which I also feel is consistently undervalued is the IWC. Back in the day, every IWC watch had an in-house movement and their manual wind and automatic calibers were some of the best, most reliable and accurate machines on the market. With their bespoke Pelleton winding system, which was developed by the marques famed technical director Albert Pelleton in the early 1950s, IWC offered a solid alternative, if not also an implicit challenge, to Rolexs longtime dominance of full rotor automatic technology . IWC continued to develop their 85x auto calibers for nearly two decadesuntil they reached what many experts consider the pinnacle with their legendary 8541B movement.

International Watch Co., also known as IWC, is a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer located in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and founded by American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones in 1868.

In 1991 IWC director Gnter Blmlein founded the LMH Group with its headquarters in Schaffhausen. With a 100% stake in IWC, 60% in Jaeger-LeCoultre and 90% in the Saxony-based watchmaking company of A. Lange & Shone , the Group employed some 1440 persons.

In July 2000, LMH was acquired by Richemont , a Zug-based luxury goods group, for CHF 2.8 bn. Despite the takeover by Richemont, IWC was guaranteed that it would continue to be managed by the same executives from the LMH Group.

IWC Yacht Club

Why We Love it

Sometimes a vintage watch’s name is so on-the-nose that you can’t help but love it.

The IWC Yacht Club is one such watch.

Introduced at the Basel Fair in 1967, the Yacht Club was IWC’s attempt to create an all-weather, dressy-casual watch that the owner could wear in all environments. It represented a departure from the military pieces that the manufacture produced during and just following World War II, or the Aquatimer, the brand’s first dive watch that was released in 1967. IWC intended the Yacht Club to inhabit a middle ground between the two—still water resistant, still robust, but elegant enough to pass muster at a yacht club, for instance.

Actually, the name truly does say it all—in this case, it was where IWC intended the watch to be worn. Along with the Yacht Club, IWC released a whole “Club” line, marketed toward specific sports: for example, the Golf Club and the Polo Club, whose integrated bracelet foreshadowed the IWC Ingenieur SL that would be designed by Gerald Genta. However, neither the Golf Club nor the Polo Club were as successful as the Yacht Club, which found a niche both among contemporary consumers and collectors today.

In aesthetics as well as spirit, the Yacht Club bears comparison to the Rolex Datejust, that arbiter of casual luxury that has been a mainstay in the boxes of many vintage watch collectors since the 1940s. Like the Datejust, the Yacht Club brought together a sturdy stainless steel 36mm case, a sparse, elegant dial, and a robust automatic movement. For the Yacht Club, IWC relied on a calibre to rival any that Rolex produced: the Calibre 8541B.

For many technically-minded collectors, a movement can be the selling point for a watch, one that tips the scales from “maybe” to “I definitely have to have this.” In that arena, the Calibre 8541B definitely doesn’t disappoint. It was conceived by Albert Pellaton, IWC’s master calibrist, whose innovative winding system—featured in this watch—is known as “the Pellaton winding system.”

Although IWC would give the Yacht Club a successor—designed by Gerald Genta himself—these versions, being mostly quartz, aren’t nearly as popular as the originals. The one that we offer here is in excellent, virtually New Old Stock condition, complete with a steel “Oyster-style” bracelet and hang tag. For the collector who wishes to add a luxury sports watch—with a killer movement—to his collection, the Yacht Club is it.

Expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. We are also happy to hand deliver your purchase in Manhattan or you may pick it up at our showroom.

Returns must be sent overnight or by priority international delivery, fully insured and paid for by the customer. A restocking fee may apply. Watches must be returned in the same condition as initially shipped.
