  • 22.5 ml lime juice

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.

Most likely created at the club of the same name in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The oldest printed reference to the recipe comes from Crosby Gaige's Cocktail Guide & Ladies Companion (1941). In it, it is described as "one of the best rum drinks on the island".

The cocktail was then popularized by Trader Vic, and published in his 1947 book Bartender's Guide by Trader Vic. It is this association, and the particular ingredients being used, that often moves this recipe to Tiki territory, and it is commonly described as a "Tikified Daiquiri".

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club was established on November 1, 1844 by a group of British Royal Navy officers and Bermudian sailors. These sailors would often partake in match racing, where two boats would go against one another with a hefty sum being wagered.

Ironically enough, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club cocktail is not currently featured in the Club's menu .

All the details inside the wedding of Princess Märtha Louise and ‘Shaman’ Durek Verrett as the extravagant official schedule is revealed

Princess Märtha Louise and ‘Shaman’ Durek Verrett have kicked off celebrations ahead of their wedding this Saturday

‘Welcome to Ålesund. The celebrations can finally begin.’ And with those two sentences, Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett kicked off one of the most anticipated, and controversial, royal weddings in recent memory. Coverage rights scandals, conspiracy theories, and rumours of a boycott by the royals of Europe – despite all the headlines and the hounding, all the column inches and calumny allegations, the big day is finally in sight.

As guests, including Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, flocked from Ålesund airport on Thursday, they were presented with an official wedding itinerary, a packed schedule filled with boat trips, lavish dinners, and plenty of dances. There can’t have been much time to unwind after the trip to Ålesund, widely considered one of the most picturesque spots in all of Norway. By seven o’clock, the wedding party was expected for a ‘Meet and Greet’ in the Green Garden of Hotel 1904. The dress code? ‘Sexy and Cool’, of course.

Past lives, spirit guides, and energy vampires – the story of Märtha Louise and Shaman Durek might leave some calling hockum, but there's nothing woo woo about their wedding, which will see the ‘clairvoyant’ princess tie the knot with a controversial Californian guru

Märtha Louise and Durek’s decision to grant exclusive coverage rights to Hello (and the Netflix crew who are recording the occasion for a Sussex - style tell-all documentary) has caused quite a stir among royal circles. A spokesperson for the Norwegian Royal Court was quick to confirm that Märtha Louise’s parents, King Harald and Queen Sonja, would not be included in any photos taken by the couple’s chosen outlets to avoid compromising fair coverage. It also means that photos from the various parties throughout the three-day affair have been few and far between – perhaps, some circles have wondered, any leaks might reduce the fee the couple can charge for exclusivity. That hasn't, though, stopped the partygoers posting all the pre-wedding celebrations to Instagram. Despite a social media ban at the ceremony, friends of the Princess and the Shaman have been documenting their flights, airport drinks, and trips to a floating sauna ahead of the big day.

Inside Tam-Na-Ghar, the Prince and Princess of Wales' private cottage on the Balmoral estate

Clandestine coverage aside, we caught a glimpse of the characteristically idiosyncratic outfits that the couple chose for their ‘sexy and cool’ Meet and Greet. Princess Märtha Louise donned a striking asymmetrical dress in bubblegum pink, with a gold heart-shaped belt buckle to symbolise, as she explained, that ‘love conquers all’. Self-styled ‘shaman’ Durek was geared up in a matching blazer and trousers. The pair also coordinated their necklaces, both wearing KOLOURS JEWELLERY by Magnus Thorud, per Hello .

Ålesund will host the first party during a packed royal wedding schedule

The outfits hold a poignant meaning for the pair. Both Märtha Louise’s dress and Durek Verrett’s suit jacket were designed by the Princess’s fashion brand, Hest – which might explain the ‘H’ patterned fabric. In wearing Hest, the bride-to-be is not only representing the label she fronts alongside her friend Monica Sundt Utne and her maid-of-honour, Anne-Kari Johannessen, but paying tribute to the Hest’s history. The brand was founded when Johannessen’s husband Espen passed away in 2019. Described as ‘one of the country’s finest horse trainers in show jumping’, Espen was a close friend of Märtha Louise, and no doubt her nearest and dearest will have been moved by the decision to honour their relationship on this first day of the pre-wedding celebrations.

After the Meet and Greet, the schedule promises (threatens?) a ‘concert with surprises’. Guests are only informed that dancing shoes will play a vital role in the evening’s activities. As to what surprises lay in store, only time – and a Netflix documentary – can tell.

The King and Queen are among those planning to snub the two major media companies who have secured exclusive rights to cover the controversial wedding

Whatever esoteric occurrences may have taken place at the Hotel 1904 on Thursday evening, the assembled royal guests – joined, no doubt, by many A-listers from Durek’s LA wellness set – had plenty of time to recover as they woke up surrounded by the stunning views of Geiranger Fjord. After breakfast – where perhaps conversation turned to Durek and Märtha Louise’s first meeting, during a past life in ancient Egypt as a pharaoh and his queen – the wedding party will face a short walk to the Skateflukaia port. On a three hour boat journey to Geiranger village, they will take in the sights at the aptly named Suitor and Bridal Veil waterfalls, enjoying a light lunch and vaguely described ‘entertainment and toast’. After disembarking at the village, those staying at the Hotel Union are invited to simply ‘walk up the waterfall’ to reach their next abode. Thankfully for the continued lineage of much of Europe’s monarchy, shuttle buses are also provided.

King Harald and Queen Sonja may have declined to be included in exclusive wedding pictures, but they have said how excited they are to be celebrating their daughter's wedding in Geiranger

Queen Sonja, King Harald, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and Prince Sverre Magnus are all scheduled to join the celebrations on Märtha Louise's big day. Mette-Marit's son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, will not be attending after admitting that he assaulted his current partner while under the ‘intoxication of alcohol and cocaine’.

Then, naturally, a salsa party shall ensue. After the sublime scenes of Nordic landscapes, partygoers are invited to don their finest ‘Latin American’ garb and showcase their best cubanito. ‘Being a shaman, music gives me a chance to recenter myself and realise what’s really important, which is freedom of expression,’ Durek told Digital Journal in 2023, reflecting on his own newly released house music album, ‘I believe It can only be found when we surrender to the bass. I believe that god is the music and the music is god.’ No chance of a royal macarena, then?

While King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit are all scheduled to attend Saturday’s ceremony, alongside Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria , Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Sofia, no parties have confirmed whether they plan to attend these pre-wedding celebrations. Perhaps the House of Glücksburg may find it more fitting to spend the night on the royal yacht . For those wondering, the bar closes at three. AM.

And then for the big day itself. Breakfast, a trip to the spa, then buses to Vinje Farm, where a red carpet (and press) will be waiting. The guests will be greeted by celebrity pastor Michael B. Beckwith – once a guest on Oprah Winfrey’s ‘Super Soul’ podcast. Parish priest Margit Lovise Holte will lead the ceremony itself, with Märtha Louise and Shaman Durek Verrett set to tie the knot around 1:30pm.

Geiranger Fjord, Norway

Royal watchers have been offered no information about the ‘stunning wedding dress’ that the Princess has picked out for her big day, so the moment she walks down the aisle after the seven bridesmaids and groomsmen will certainly be one of revelation. As for her tiara? Märtha Lousie might don her signature piece, a diamond and pearl piece gifted to her by her grandfather, King Olav, on her 18th birthday. Or, perhaps, she will turn to Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, iconic among Norwegian royals for its illustrious history – and for the fact that the original was stolen in a London jewel heist. It may be that Princess Märtha Louise takes inspiration from her mother, Queen Sonja, who refrained from wearing any tiara during her wedding to then Crown Prince Harald, instead adorning her hair with flowers.

From a grand royal robbery to a touching personal memory, Princess Märtha Louise of Norway will certainly make a stunning impression whatever jewellery she chooses to don when she walks down this aisle this week

Image may contain: Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, Person, Accessories, Jewelry, Necklace, Adult, Ring, and Bracelet

While all eyes will of course be on the bride as she enters the tent on Vinje Farm, the esteemed guests will be wearing some very glamorous outfits, if reports by The Royal Watcher are anything to go by. Apparently, all women are encouraged to don ball gowns for the ceremony, but have been ‘strongly requested not to wear white, all blank, all pink and all types of gold dresses’. An insight, perhaps, into Märtha Louise’s colour scheme of choice?

Male guests from the United States, it is supposedly specified, should take inspiration from the Oscars – which Durek Verrett has himself graced the red carpet several times. European royals have been encouraged, says the royal blog, to wear gala attire. After saying ‘I do’, the couple and the guests will all travel back to the hotel for a banquet dinner, and one can only hope, a joyous life of marital bliss. Until, that is, they do it all again in the next one.

MSC Cruises Drink & Bar Menus With PriceS – UPDATED

Last Updated on June 12, 2024

We spent a lot of time on a recent voyage with MSC Cruises trying to decipher the MSC drink menus and drink packages. We are posting the entire range of MSC drink menus to accompany the information recently published comparing the drink packages. These menus will also help people with the MSC Easy drink package better understand what’s included!

MSC Cruises Gratuities on Bar / Drink Purchases

Onboard bar purchases will incur gratuities, automatically added to all purchases : 15% gratuities on European, Emirates, South Caribbean, Red Sea, South America (Brazil and Argentina), and Far East itineraries, and 18% gratuities on North America itineraries. If you purchase a drink or beverage package, the price of the package includes the gratuities and you will not pay anything additional!

This list is what is generally presented in any dining area or main dining room on MSC ships.

A word about the drinks on MSC Cruises

If you plan on enjoying your cruise without purchasing a drink package, you’ll see by the above menus that the prices of drinks really aren’t terrible compared to other cruise lines. However, a drink package is now more commonly included as a perk or incentive when booking a cruise with MSC . Even if there is a slight upcharge for an included Easy Package for you’re next cruise, you’ll likely find that it’s well worth it given that it includes bottled water, sodas and specialty coffee which is uncommon with most cruise lines.

Hello, how are you? I made a summary between the Easy and Easy Plus packages

Easy • You can only drink Heiniken beer • If you want to drink rum, vodka, whiskey, gin, tequila (You cannot choose a brand) • If you want wine you can choose between Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel Rose, Cabernet or Merlot but the house wine, do not choose by brand. • It is not valid for specialized restaurants, that is, if one goes to one specialized in pasta or Mexican, it is paid outside the plan. • If someone wants to buy a drink that is more expensive, they pay the difference. • The minibar is paid separately • Tips are included

Easy Plus • You can choose a greater variety of beers, rum, vodka, gin • You can choose brands of wine • This package can be used in specialized restaurants. • If someone wants to buy a drink that is more expensive, they pay the difference. • Minibar is paid separately • Tips are included

Thomas, Yep! This basically points out the main differences. Thanks!

Hi, how are you? We are going in January on MSC Armonia for 7 nights. Will you have the same menu but with the Easy Plus package? I want to see what the difference is with the Easy.

I understand that in the Easy Plus you can choose a wider variety of cocktails, choose other brands of spirits, wine, beer and better coffee.

Can you help me please Regards

Hi Thomas, you can see the easy plus menu on this page about MSC Drink Packages . But just know that you can order from any menu. I hope this helps! Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks for this ! Do you know if the basic drink package covers say a bourbon and coke drink ?

You know, that’s a good question. Our travel buddies were ordering generic like rum & coke – Vodka Tonic, etc… but didn’t ever hear anyone order any basic Bourbon. BUT They did seem to have something included in the easy / basic package for all alcohol types, so I can only assume they have a bourbon. If not, you only pay the difference in price if what you want isn’t included in the Easy package. The few times I have done that, it’s only been $2 or so for better drinks.

Hi Phil, yesterday I sent a small message about the MSC transfer between Milan Malpensa Airport and Genoa Port. A small modification: we should get from Milan to Genoa in the morning of June 22, not June 21, so I would like the information (timetable, etc.) by the 22 of June.Sorry for the modification. Thanks in advance for your reply: Agnes

Hi Agnes – I’m unfortunately not famliar with how MSC Handles busses or shuttles from the Milan airport 🙁 – but I do know the transport is usually only on the morning of the cruise for when they DO offer shuttles. If you’re arriving early, you’ll be on your own to get to Genoa and it’s a few hours by train. The trains are generally pretty reliable an on time, but give yourself plenty of room to work with. You can use Rome2Rio (link) and plan a route or hire a private car (expect to spend 200 euro to get there though!). Here’s a link to private services on Viator

Hi! We have a cabin (Seaside from Genoa – 7 nights) for 4 people: 2 adults, 2 children, we have Easy Package for all four people. By definition, children do not drink alcoholic beverages, but my question is, is ice cream(for the children) included in Easy Packae? Thanks in advance: Agnes

Hi Agnes, I think if you call MSC, they will downgrade the kids to a soft drink package and save you money. As for icecream, it was available at the outside cafe at no charge but it will not cover the specialty ice cream / Gelato at Philippe Maury & Venchi Chocolate

Does the prices in the drinks menu include the gratuity? Or we have to add the 18% to know the total price?

Lizette, If you don’t have a drink package, and you are purchasing the drinks one by one, then you’ll pay the gratuity on top of the price you’re seeing. I believe the gratuity has just increased to 18% from 15%

We are two people traveling on MSC Meraviglia. Looking at these prices (some of them equal to or better than any hotel or Pub), I don’t think we are going to spend $560 (2 non-alcoholic packages) on water, coffee, and sodas in our 10-day cruise.

I agree- The prices really aren’t bad compared to other cruise lines! The packages make the most sense when they’re included as a promotion in the base fare at a discounted rate. I have friends that recently did a 2 week cruise with MSC and the drink packages were as much as the cruise. They declined and ended up spending a fraction of what the drink package would have been. Definitely worth doing the math!

how can i find out what brands of scotch are included in the easy plus package

Hi Bill & Susan, You can see the main menu above (first menu) and page 7 has “whisky” …. which they’ve sort of put all scotch and whisky together.

Remember it’s anything up to $10 per drink, so there are quite a few basic options available.

It’s explained on another page here that the Easy Package includes drinks up to $7.50, but I don’t see these drinks listed in the menu provided above, only the $9 ones. Did I miss something? Or is it $7.50 plus a 20% gratuity so it is $9.00 as listed on the menu which also includes the tip.

Hi Cory – If you look at the menu at the top of this page – and flip to the first page of the menu, it has the drinks up to 7.50 which are included in the “easy” package. MSC Generally has a menu for drinks that are part of the “Easy Package” and not all have a price associated with them (They’re just included). The $7.50 amount has been established since they now allow you to get a drink that is more than the $7.50 limit by paying the difference. I hope that makes sense!

Thanks! Don’t know how I missed that. I did the calculation and for our group of mostly light or non-drinkers, the packages don’t make financial sense when everybody has to get the same package, especially when we are going to be in port during most days and will get paid drinks there.

Sure! If you’re light drinkers, MSC Often has a promo for Easy or Easy plus as part of a cruise fare. I find that is the best way to go when it’s available since it covers everything from premium coffee & bottled water, etc. Not sure if you saw our MSC Drink Calculator (here) . This might help as well!

I noticed one can order bottles of wine pre cruise to be delivered to your stateroom. The prices for which seemed reasonable at @$32. My question is can you get a bottle at a bar on board and take it to your room or would there be a corkage fee?

Hi Kim! If you get the bottles onboard where they are available, you’ll pay a gratuity but not a true “corkage” fee by just taking them back to your room. So Expect to pay whatever their automatic gratuity / service charge is – but nothing else.

Hi. Are these prices in australian dollars?

Hello! The prices are in US dollars unless otherwise noted (sometimes we post prices in Euro, but it’s clearly stated).

Your not in Alice Springs anymore, mate!

Are these also the same prices if you were to buy the drinks a la carte?

Hi Josh – Yes, this is the ship-wide price list even if you’re paying for the drinks 1 at a time. For package customers, it’s a reference as to what the package will cover more than anything.

Royal Caribbean Drink Menus for 2024

Last Updated on August 27, 2024

Royal Caribbean has some of the largest cruise ships in the world that can have 15 – 20 different places to get drinks while on board. Their offerings range from classics like a mojito to daiquiri to new takes on traditional cocktails, like a New Fashioned at the Schooner Bar.

Unlike other cruise lines, Royal Caribbean does provide their bar menus ahead of time, but only if you have a cruise booked. Once you add your reservation to your Royal Caribbean account, you can use the Royal Caribbean app to see all the bars available on your ship and their respective menus. However, for those who haven’t booked yet, or if you want an overview of everything in one place, we’ve gathered some of their menus.

Below you’ll find the drink menus for many of Royal Caribbean’s bars. For drinks offered at multiple venues, the prices are consistent (i.e., a Coors Light and the Lime and Coconut will cost the same as a Coors Light at Playmakers Sports Bar). When looking at prices, remember that Royal Caribbean automatically adds an 18% gratuity (tip) for any drink purchase.

Royal Caribbean also offers an unlimited drink package called the “Deluxe Beverage Package.” If you want to see if it’s worth it to get the drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

Nearly every Royal Caribbean ship has an English Pub on board. The name is different on each ship, but it always uses the English tradition of combining two items (ie. When Royal Caribbean ships leave out of Galveston, they are limited on what types of alcohol they can sell until they enter international waters. Unlike Carnival, your drink package will work as soon as you board, but you’ll have to choose from the liquors below.

All Royal Caribbean Drink Menus with Prices (2024)

royal caribbean drink menus

On Royal Caribbean’s fleet, each bar has its own unique flavor.

I love the variety of drinks available , ranging from classic cocktails and exclusive wines to craft beers and countless interesting non-alcoholic options.

In this article, we will explore all the 2024 drink menus and prices from the various bars found on these ships.

Table of Contents

Royal Caribbean Fleetwide Bar Menu 2024

The first thing to clarify is that Royal Caribbean has a fleetwide drink menu and then different smaller menus based on the different bars that change for every ship.

Royal Caribbean fleetwide drink menu 1

Lime and Coconut Bar Menu

The Lime and Coconut is a tropical-themed bar designed for those seeking a fun, beach-inspired atmosphere .

It can be found on the pool deck of select ships, such as Navigator of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and Freedom of the Seas, and it spans multiple levels on some ships, offering a unique chill rooftop lounge and exceptional views .

The decor features rainbow-colored decorations and Caribbean-inspired seating.

There’s usually a rotation of DJs and live music that enhances the party vibe.

I absolutely recommend it during movie nights, because this bar offers some of the best viewing spots.

As for the drinks, the Lime and Coconut specializes in fruity and frozen cocktails .

Some favorites include coladas, margaritas, and of course, the house specialty, the Lime & Coconut cocktail. It is made with Malibu coconut rum, coconut milk, coconut syrup, Monin guava syrup, and lime juice.

Additionally, the bar serves classics like beer, wine, and hard seltzer, and offers a full bar selection.

Schooner Bar Menu

The Schooner Bar is a signature bar across Royal Caribbean’s fleet.

It offers a nautical-themed piano bar experience that’s both classic and cozy.

It’s an ideal spot for guests looking for a relaxed atmosphere, for example for a post-dinner drink .

The bar’s design remembers a classic sailboat, and it’s one of the best ones if you are looking for a space for conversation and relaxation.

The menu at the Schooner Bar features quite an extensive selection of cocktails . It goes from timeless classics to contemporary mixes.

If you prefer the drink menu also has a wide assortment of beers, wines, and spirits.

Boleros Bar Menu

Boleros is Royal Caribbean’s Latin-themed bar .

I love its vibrant atmosphere and the selection of drinks inspired by Latin America.

The favorites from this bar are usually mojitos , caipirinhas , and margaritas , but they also have a selection of Latin beers and spirits .

There’s usually live music and a festive ambiance.

boleros Bar drink menu

Trellis Bar Menu

The Trellis Bar is located in the quiet surroundings of Central Park on Oasis class ships .

It provides a peaceful outdoor setting ideal for enjoying a cocktail or two. It’s one of my favorite bars on Royal Caribbean and I definitely recommend it if you want peace of mind and don’t like big crowds.

The Trellis Bar’s menu includes a variety of standard bar drinks, completed by a selection of light bites such as mac & cheese poppers, crab cakes, and truffled fries (that I love, try them!).

Wonderland Drink Menu

Wonderland is mainly a dinner venue but don’t miss its unique drink menu.

The bar and restaurant have a menu inspired by elements like ice, fire, earth, water, and air in an adventure that’s both visually stunning and delicious .

I’ve tried it a few times, the drinks are beautiful and very memorable . However, the service is a bit slow since the bar has to serve the guests of the restaurant too.

I still think it is worth a try, you can find it on Harmony of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Spectrum of the Seas.

Vitality Café Drink Menu

The Vitality Café is basically the bar of the spa area and it’s designed for those looking for healthier beverage options.

The café’s menu has quite a wide array of fresh juices and smoothies . they are refreshing and are perfect for guests seeking something to drink before or after a workout or spa treatment.

The beverages are available as part of the Deluxe Beverage Package or for individual purchase.

If you still don’t know it well, be sure to have a look at the comparison of all the Royal Caribbean drink packages .

Starbucks on Royal Caribbean Drink Menu and Prices

Don’t want to give up a good coffee? You should know that some Royal Caribbean ships have Starbucks on board !

It’s available on Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Icon of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Utopia of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas.

The menu is quite similar to the ones on land even if it’s a little narrower .

Below here you can see the available drinks and prices for Starbucks at sea!

Starbucks on Royal Caribbean Drink Menu and Prices

Casino Royale Bar Menu

As the name says, the Casino Royale bar is an integral part of Royal Caribbean’s casino.

It’s the right spot if you wanna enjoy something to drink while you try your luck.

The bar typically has a good selection of drinks, from cocktails like the classic martini to signature Royal Caribbean creations.

Here’s the menu:

To conclude

As you’ve seen, each of the bars on Royal Caribbean ships offers a unique atmosphere and drink list .

We’ve started with the tropical vibes of the Lime and Coconut bar , and then we’ve seen the elegance of the Trellis Bar in Central Park .

If you’re in the mood for a lively dance night choose the Boleros , while if you wanna listen to piano tunes choose the Schooner Bar .

For a unique cocktail go to Wonderland or to the Casino Royale , or head to the Vitality Spa for a healthful refreshment .

Note that the specific offerings and prices may vary by ship and itinerary, so check directly with Royal Caribbean or onboard for the most current information.

The 9 best new cruise ships launching in 2024

Gene Sloan

This year will be a big one for new cruise ships, with three major vessels on the way that promise to break new ground in cruising.

The most notable of the three, Icon of the Seas , is the first of a new series of megaships from Royal Caribbean that will be larger than any cruise vessels ever built. It'll be loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz attractions, restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Icon of the Seas is just one of two major new Royal Caribbean cruise ships arriving in 2024. Also on the way is Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line's hugely successful Oasis Class of ships.

The year will also bring the first new ship in more than a decade from storied cruise line Cunard (Queen Anne) and the first of a new class of ship from cruise giant Princess Cruises (Sun Princess).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The new ships from Cunard and Princess Cruises will both feature notable updated designs for the brands, with an expanded lineup of restaurants, bars and entertainment areas.

All three vessels — Icon of the Seas, Queen Anne and Sun Princess — are the three new cruise ships for 2024 that have us the most excited here at TPG. But they're far from being the only major new cruise vessels arriving during the next 12 months.

To whet your appetite for cruising in the year ahead, take a look at our list of nine new cruise ships arriving in 2024.

Carnival Jubilee

Maiden voyage: Dec. 23, 2023

royal yacht drinks menu

This newest ship for cruise giant Carnival technically arrived at the end of 2023, but its maiden voyage on Dec. 23 was so close to the start of 2024 that we're calling it a new vessel for 2024.

The 15-deck-high ship is a sister to the line's recently unveiled Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration , which have made waves in the past two years for their huge size and what might be the most unusual attraction ever on a cruise vessel: a deck-top roller coaster .

Like Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee measures 183,521 tons, putting it in a tie with the former ship for the position of biggest vessel ever to sail for Carnival (at 181,808 tons, sister ship Mardi Gras is slightly smaller). Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, notably, are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ships currently afloat, and they are bigger than all but a dozen other cruise vessels in the world.

Like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee has a roller coaster on its top deck. Dubbed Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, it's similar to the roller coasters on its sister vessels, with an 800-foot-long track and vehicles that reach speeds of 40 mph — give or take.

Also, like its sisters, Carnival Jubilee was designed to hold up to 6,630 passengers. That's just a tad below the 7,600 passengers that will be able to fit aboard Royal Caribbean's soon-to-debut Icon of the Seas — the new world's largest cruise ship (more on that vessel below).

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line

In addition to a roller coaster, Carnival Jubilee has a giant water park on its top deck. Like its sister, its interiors are filled with a far broader array of suites than you'd find on earlier Carnival ships. But the vessel isn't a carbon copy of the previous vessels. New features include two ocean-themed zones with new bar and dining options — including an underwater-themed bar adorned with octopus arms that will serve drinks.

The development of ships on the scale of Carnival Jubilee and its sisters has been a big deal for Carnival. Until recently, the line had resisted the trend among major brands to build even bigger vessels that offer a supersized megaresort-at-sea experience.

Carnival's last new vessel before the arrival of Mardi Gras in 2021, Carnival Panorama, didn't even crack the top 40 list of biggest ships when it debuted in 2019.

Carnival Jubilee is sailing seven-night voyages to the Western Caribbean out of Galveston. Fares start at $669 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Icon of the Seas

Maiden voyage: Jan. 27

royal yacht drinks menu

Call it the new grande dame of the megaship world. At 250,800 tons, Icon of the Seas will be the biggest cruise ship ever built, and it'll be chock-full of more amusements, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues than any cruise vessel ever.

In other words, if you're a megaship fan, this is your new go-to ship — assuming you don't mind vacationing with a lot of other people.

In size, Icon of the Seas will be about 6% bigger than the biggest of the Oasis Class ships, the one-year-old Wonder of the Seas. But it'll be able to hold about 7% more people — 7,600 passengers as compared to Wonder of the Seas' total capacity of 7,084 passengers. That's a new all-time record for a passenger ship.

The bigger passenger capacity is in part due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas is being built with more cabins offering extra bunks to accommodate families with children. It'll also have more amenities geared to families, including a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

Related: Icon of the Seas will cater to families

Surfside notably will feature splash areas for babies and kids, pools and lounge spaces for parents, family-friendly eateries and shops, and a bar with "mommy and me" matching mocktails for kids and cocktails for grownups.

Icon of the Seas will also feature the largest water park ever built on a cruise ship, with a record six waterslides. No other vessel comes close when it comes to water attractions on a cruise ship.

Other notable new attractions will include the AquaDome — a massive, glass dome-covered area at the front of the ship. A true engineering marvel (the 363-ton glass dome had to be built separately next to the ship and winched into place), the AquaDome will be home to the AquaTheater — a venue found in a different location on Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships that hosts acrobatic and diving shows in a high-tech stage/pool.

The AquaTheater will be the marquee attraction within the AquaDome, which will also offer dining and drinking venues, as well as cozy seating areas for daytime and evening hangouts. One such spot, the Overlook, is an elevated lounge featuring special nooks (Overlook Pods) and wraparound windows providing fantastic ocean views and easy viewing of the aqua shows.

In addition, Icon of the Seas will have a record-for-a-ship seven pools, four of which will be at a main pool area called Chill Island. The latter area will be home to the line's first swim-up bar on a ship, Swim and Tonic.

Related: The ultimate Icon of the Seas guide: Pricing, itineraries, and what's on board

Ten new food outlets on the ship will include Surfside Eatery, a family-friendly buffet in the Surfside neighborhood, and Empire Supper Club, an upscale venue designed to evoke the atmosphere of New York City in the 1930s. The latter will serve an extravagant eight-course meal (think: caviar and wagyu), with each dish paired with a cocktail created by celebrity mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim.

Among lodging options, Icon of the Seas will boast 14 new cabin and suite types plus 14 categories of rooms that already exist on earlier Royal Caribbean ships. That's a whopping 28 types of accommodation in all.

Many of these cabin categories are family-friendly rooms that sleep four guests; some can accommodate six or eight guests. In total, 313 cabins and suites are listed specifically as family-focused accommodations, though many regular room types can sleep more than two people.

Note that Icon of the Seas is just the first of three sister ships Royal Caribbean has on order for delivery by 2026, all of similar dimensions. Together, they will make up what is known as the Icon Class.

Icon of the Seas will operate seven-night voyages to the Caribbean out of Miami. Fares start at $1,577 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Sun Princess

royal yacht drinks menu

Like Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises is going bigger with its next new ship — a lot bigger.

Under development for more than six years and the first of an all-new series of vessels for the line, the 4,000-passenger Sun Princess is about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet. And yet, while it's 21% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess is finally getting serious about pampering its best customers.

In addition, Sun Princess will boast an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" along the ship's extra-wide 10th deck, which will come with access to a private deck area (sort of a riff on the Havana-class cabins found on a handful of Carnival Cruise Line ships). Plus, the top deck of the ship is getting some unusual-for-Princess sizzle with the addition of a glass-dome-topped pool area that will transform into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Related: A sneak peek inside Sun Princess under construction

Other notable differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. Don't worry, buffet lovers: There will still be a buffet-like venue on the ship. It will be eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off the ship's outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, to be called the Princess Arena, will also have a new look. Its new-for-Princess in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

The ship's three-deck-high piazza, called the Sun Princess Piazza, is getting an upgrade, too, with a new circular shape, a stage that pops up from the center of the floor for performances and a giant, three-deck-high moveable LED screen that will play a role in evening productions in the space.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess will feature a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles. Kids should love the new-for-Princess fun zone called Park19, featuring a ropes course and what's being billed as the first roll glider at sea, an electric ride that goes up to 11 mph.

Sun Princess initially will sail in Europe through the fall before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $467 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a five-night Caribbean sailing.

Maiden voyage: May 10

royal yacht drinks menu

It's been a long time coming, but storied cruise line Cunard is finally launching a new ship. Built to an all-new design for the 183-year-old brand, the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will be Cunard's first new vessel in 14 years — an unusually long period for any line to go without a new ship.

Queen Anne, notably, will embrace the latest trends of travel and cruising in a way that Cunard ships haven't done before, including a new focus on choice in dining and entertainment, wellness and onboard celebrations.

The ship will offer 15 different places to grab a bite, more than double the number on the line's other ships. The options will include Aji Wa, a new restaurant concept for Cunard that will serve Japanese cuisine influenced by the seasons of the year. Also new for Cunard will be Aranya, an Indian eatery; Sir Samuel's, a high-end steakhouse; and Tramonto, which will serve Mediterranean dishes.

Wellness-focused areas will include a new-for-the-line, glass-enclosed Wellness Studio at the top of the ship that will offer classes in yoga, pilates, Zumba and line dancing during the day and ballroom dancing classes at sunset.

A new juice bar and a cafe near the main pool will serve healthy dishes, and the ship's spa is being built as a temple to wellness. It'll offer a sprawling thermal pool complex that includes eight heated loungers, four experiential showers, a reflexology footpath with textured stones flowing with hot water, a cold room (a first for Cunard), a large steam room, a Himalayan salt sauna and a traditional sauna. A relaxation room and wellness suite will round out the offerings.

Related: A sneak peek inside Queen Anne under construction

On the celebrations front, Queen Anne will have a lounge specifically designed for weddings that spills into an indoor reception room and, just beyond, a new-for-the-line private rooftop terrace space for wedding and vow renewal receptions.

Other notable features of the ship will include an expanded Commodore Club observation lounge and a main pool area (The Pavilion) topped with a retractable glass roof designed to be as much a showpiece as a functional structure.

Not everything about Queen Anne will be different from previous Cunard ships. A lot will be familiar. As is always the case for Cunard vessels, Queen Anne will have a soaring Grand Lobby with a cascading staircase where you can take selfies in your formal night splendor. That staple of all Cunard ships, the ballroom known as the Queens Room, is also making a comeback.

Queen Anne initially will sail in Europe before setting off on an around-the-world cruise in January 2025. Fares start at $449 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a quick two-night cruise from Hamburg, Germany, to Southampton, England. Seven-night sailings in Europe start at $849 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Maiden voyage: June 27

The newest ship for the luxury line Silversea Cruises is a sister to the brand's recently unveiled Silver Nova — a groundbreaking vessel that has been turning heads since it debuted in August.

Like Silver Nova, Silver Ray will be bigger than Silversea's previous ships and feature an unusual, asymmetrical design for its public decks that reorients its key features toward the sides of the ship instead of the center. Whether you're floating in the ship's main pool or dining at its open-air Marquee restaurant, you'll be looking out at the sea (or whatever destination the ship is visiting) like you've never been able to before.

Silver Ray's pool area, in particular, will be striking, as is the pool area on Silver Nova. The long and narrow pool won't be in the middle of the deck but offset to its starboard side, and it'll be oriented to face outward to the sea. Nearly all the lounge chairs around the pool will face in the same direction toward the sea, too.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Silversea ship

As we wrote about in our recent first look at Silver Nova , part of what makes this new outward-facing orientation for these ships so magical is that they don't have any structures rising from the starboard sides of their pool decks. Passengers floating in the pools on these ships or lounging on nearby lounge chairs get an unobstructed view of the sea off the starboard side.

Silver Ray's asymmetrical design will also be evident at two food and beverage venues at the top of the vessel — both new-for-Silversea concepts that first debuted in August on Silver Nova.

The first, Marquee, will be an alfresco dining venue that is also off-center, with an orientation that offers commanding views of the sea from the ship's port side. It'll be home to The Grill, Silversea's signature outdoor "hot rocks" dining venue, and also double as the ship's Spaccanapoli pizza outlet. The second venue, The Dusk Bar, will be an open-air sky bar at the back of the vessel that, like Marquee, is positioned on the port side of the ship.

royal yacht drinks menu

Additional dining venues on board will include versions of Silversea's main signature restaurant La Terrazza, French eatery La Dame, seafood eatery Atlantide and sushi outlet Kaiseki.

In addition to asymmetry in many areas, one thing that will be particularly noticeable about Silver Ray is its spaciousness — something it will share with Silver Nova. At 54,700 tons, the two ships are about 34% bigger than Silversea's last three new vessels — Silver Muse, Silver Moon and Silver Dawn — but they are designed to hold only about 22% more passengers. That gives them significantly more space per passenger.

With every berth filled, Silver Ray will sail with 728 passengers — the same as Silver Nova and just 132 more than the three earlier Silversea vessels.

The extra space on the two vessels has allowed Silversea to expand its lineup of cabin categories, with more large suites. As is always the case with Silversea ships, every cabin on the ship will be a suite. But Silver Ray and Silver Nova offer new premium aft suites, including a massive 1,324-square-foot complex called the Otium Suite.

Even the smallest cabins on Silver Ray will measure at least 357 square feet, which is unusually large for a cruise ship cabin.

Silver Ray will initially sail in Europe before repositioning to North America in December 2024 for winter sailings to South America and the Caribbean. Fares start at $4,600 per person, including transfers, for a nine-night South America sailing out of Panama City.

Utopia of the Seas

Maiden voyage: July 22

royal yacht drinks menu

Royal Caribbean's second new ship of the year will be a giant, too, though not quite as big as Icon of the Seas. The sixth and final vessel in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class of ships , Utopia of the Seas is expected to carry up to around 6,700 passengers and measure around 237,000 tons, which would place it just behind Icon of the Seas as the world's second-biggest cruise ship.

Like the five earlier Oasis Class ships (the newest of which, Wonder of the Seas , is the current size leader in the cruise world), Utopia of the Seas will be loaded with lots of family-focused attractions , including multiple main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on its top deck.

Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus a huge casino, spas and theaters with Broadway-style shows.

As with earlier Royal Caribbean ships, it'll even have an indoor ice-skating rink.

In design and features, Utopia of the Seas will be nearly identical to Royal Caribbean's last new Oasis Class ship, Wonder of the Seas, which debuted in 2022. Like that vessel, it'll have a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, restaurant and sun deck — something not found on the four earlier Oasis Class ships.

Utopia of the Seas will be based in Port Canaveral, Florida, for short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. Fares start at $431 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a three-night sailing.

The world's newest cruise line, three-month-old Explora Journeys, is doubling in size in 2024 with the addition of Explora 2.

Designed for 922 passengers, the high-end vessel will be an almost identical sister to Explora 1, the line's first ship, which debuted in August. It will similarly target the luxury market.

Like Explora 1, the new ship will offer oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences designed to be "homes at sea," and it'll be packed with upscale amenities. They will include 10 distinct culinary experiences, 10 indoor and outdoor bars and lounges, four swimming pools, outdoor deck areas with private cabanas, wellness facilities and entertainment.

A creation of the deep-pocketed MSC Group, which already owns MSC Cruises, Explora Journeys plans to launch at least six of the superluxurious vessels by 2028, with the first four being roughly the same size and the last two being even bigger .

In just a few years, that'll give Explora Journeys a bigger capacity than such well-known luxury cruise operators as Seabourn and the recently relaunched Crystal .

Explora Journeys is competing in the same upscale cruise space as Seabourn and Crystal, as well as luxury lines like Viking, Silversea and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. It's run completely separately from its sister brand, MSC Cruises, which caters to a mass-market audience.

Explora 2 will initially sail in the Mediterranean before repositioning to North America for the winter. Fares start at $4,275 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

Viking Vela

Maiden voyage: Dec. 19

royal yacht drinks menu

Fast-growing Viking will continue its expansion into ocean cruising in 2024 with its 11th new seagoing vessel since 2015.

Like Viking's first 10 ocean ships (one of which has been transferred to a joint venture with a Chinese company), Vela will be a relatively small, elegant vessel designed to appeal to an older crowd looking to explore the world in style and comfort.

Slightly bigger than its sister ships, Viking Vela will hold 998 passengers at double occupancy — 68 more than its siblings. But it'll still be less than a third the size of the giant ships operated by such well-known cruise brands as Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Like Viking's other ocean ships, it'll sail itineraries that feature more time in ports than is common at many other lines. Like the earlier Viking ships, it'll also be adults-only, with no passengers under the age of 18 allowed.

While slightly bigger than earlier Viking ocean ships, Viking Vela's interior will have an almost identical look. Like Viking's 10 earlier ocean vessels, Vela will boast modern, Scandinavian-influenced decor that's soothing and upscale. Onboard activities will revolve around enrichment programs and classy entertainment, and there will be elegant meals in multiple restaurants. Cabins will be relatively spacious, with the smallest of five cabin categories having 270 square feet of space. Every cabin will have a balcony.

As is typical for Viking, the fare will include a shore excursion at every port that Vela visits. Also included will be Wi-Fi, and wine and beer with lunch and dinner — all part of Viking's "no-nickel-and-diming" philosophy.

Disney Treasure

Maiden voyage: Dec. 21

royal yacht drinks menu

Disney Cruise Line is shifting into growth mode again with the unveiling of Disney Treasure , its second new ship in two years (after a 10-year period where Disney didn't unveil a single vessel). Due at the end of 2024, it's coming out in relatively quick succession to Disney Wish, a similarly designed ship that arrived in 2022.

Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure is part of Disney's new Triton Class of vessels, and it'll share many of the same features and layout as its older sister. But it will be far from an exact copy. Disney has announced quite a few major changes for Disney Treasure, including the addition of an all-new Mexican restaurant called Plaza de Coco that is themed around the events of the "Coco" movie. It replaces the "Frozen-" themed eatery on Disney Wish.

Also, a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar will replace the "Star Wars-" themed Hyperspace Lounge on Disney Wish.

Other new venues include Jumbeaux's Sweets, an ice cream parlor and candy shop inspired by Jumbeaux's Cafe in the movie "Zootopia," and Skipper Society, a new bar inspired by Disney's Jungle Cruise ride and its wisecracking skippers. At the latter, which will be where The Bayou is on Disney Wish, passengers will find a menu of themed cocktails and light snacks, such as waffles.

Yet another new drinks venue is Periscope Pub, inspired by Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (and Disney's 1954 movie version of the book and theme park attraction). It will replace Wish's Keg & Compass as Disney Treasure's sports bar. The bar is designed to look like the Nautilus submarine from the story, complete with a giant periscope, porthole windows and a ceiling designed to look like you're underwater.

Disney is also launching a new Broadway-style musical on Disney Treasure, "Disney The Tale of Moana." The show will feature popular songs and characters from the animated movie and marks the first time Disney has brought the story of Moana to the stage.

The ship's two other main shows, "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure," are repeats from earlier Disney ships.

Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure's big top-deck attraction will be AquaMouse, a water ride that swirls around the top of the vessel.

The ship will hold 2,500 passengers at double occupancy (two passengers per cabin) and up to 4,000 passengers with every berth filled.

Disney Treasure will sail seven-night voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas out of Port Canaveral. Fares start at $1,862 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Other new ships

In addition to the above, newcomers for 2024 include several small oceangoing cruise vessels from such small-ship cruise operators as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and American Cruise Lines , as well as small river ships from river lines AmaWaterways , Avalon Waterways and Viking .

Among the most notable of these smaller vessels is the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, which is being billed as the first major river ship designed to sail on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Avalon's new entry for 2024, the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria, will be that line's first vessel on the Douro River in Portugal.

History of Belgorod Oblast

From the 8th century, the territory of the present Belgorod region was part of the Khazar khanate. In 965, after the Kievan Prince Svyatoslav Igorevich attacked the khanate, the Slavic tribe union of northern people residing also in the upper Seversky Donets River became part of the ancient Russian state.

From the 12th century, this land was part of the principality of Chernigov. The invasion of the Mongols led to the complete devastation of the region. In the 15th century, Grand Duchy of Lithuania captured the Chernigov-Severskaya region including land along the Donets and Oskol rivers.

In 1500, Vasily Ivanovich Shemyachich, the owner of the land, went into the service of Ivan III Vasilyevich, Grand Prince of Moscow. Since that time, the Donets-Oskol forest-steppe (the territory of the present Belgorod region) played an important role in protecting Russia against the raids of the Crimean Tatars.

More Historical Facts…

At the end of the 16th century, the first three walled towns were built in the region: Belgorod, Stary Oskol and Valuyki. In 1650, Belgorod was moved to the right bank of the Severny Donets, where the center of the city is located today. In 1727, Belgorod guberniya (province) was formed.

With the weakening of the Crimean Khanate, the region transformed into an agrarian province of the Russian Empire. In 1869, the Kursk-Kharkov-Azov railroad passed through the territory of the region.

During the First World War, after the signing of the Peace of Brest (a separate peace treaty between Soviet Russia and the Central Powers), from April 1918 to January 1919, most of the region was occupied by the Kaiser troops and became part of the Ukrainian State of Hetman P. Skoropadsky (part of the Kharkov province).

In 1919, during the Civil War in Russia, the Red Army fought against the troops of the armed forces of the Russian south in the southern part of the region. In 1928, the territory of the present Belgorod region became part of a newly formed Central-Chernozyomnaya oblast.

In 1934, it was divided into separate Voronezh and Kursk regions. In the 1930s-1940s, the development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (a huge iron ore deposit) started.

In 1941-1943, during the Second World War, the region was under German occupation. It was liberated as a result of the famous Battle of Kursk. During the battle, the village of Prokhorovka became the site of the largest tank battle in history.

January 6, 1954, a separate Belgorod Oblast was formed. 23 districts of the Kursk region and 8 districts of the Voronezh region became parts of it.

Belgorod Oblast is a relatively unpopulated provincial area of the Russian-Ukrainian borderlands. The city of Belgorod is by no means a major tourist destination, but that in itself might make it more attractive to travelers favoring the less beaten path, and it has a good deal to offer a tourist interested in a more slowly paced, small, provincial capital. The region's biggest attraction, however, is its battlefield legacy as one of the principal stages of the Battle of Kursk , a World War II battle of an extraordinary scale and importance that is one of the principal turning points of the war. Military buffs, relatives of the deceased, and curious travelers will find that, although there is a museum dedicated to the battle in Belgorod, the majority of interesting sites are in and around the northern town of Prokhorovka.

Attacks in Russia’s Belgorod: What we know so far

Ukraine has denied any involvement in a daring cross-border assault that threatens to further escalate the war.

royal yacht drinks menu

Fifteen months after Moscow’s troops invaded Ukraine, one of the largest and most daring cross-border attacks since the war began has been carried out in Russia.

On Monday, two anti-Kremlin groups – the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) and Freedom of Russia Legion – claimed responsibility for the incursion in the Belgorod region.

Russian ‘clean up’ operation after raid on belgorod from ukraine, russia-ukraine war: list of key events, day 454, us says russia’s wagner force eyes mali as route for war supplies.

Fighting continued for a second day early on Tuesday. A dozen people are reportedly wounded and some residents have been evacuated.

INTERACTIVE-CROSS-BORDER-RAIDS-BELGOROD-MAY23-2023

Later on Tuesday, Russia’s Defence Ministry said that the units it blamed had been forced back into Ukrainian territory. More than 70 attackers have been killed, the ministry said, a figure that was not possible to verify.

After accusing Ukraine, Russia opened a “terrorism” investigation. Officials in Kyiv say they had nothing to do with the attacks.

Here is what we know so far:

Where is Belgorod?

Russia’s Belgorod province borders Ukraine’s Luhansk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

It is about 600km (373 miles) from the Russian capital, Moscow, and has been a front-line region, serving as a vital base for the Kremlin’s armed forces to launch attacks towards Ukraine.

But Belgorod has also exposed Russian vulnerabilities.

Moscow accidentally bombed Belgorod city last month, while f uel and ammunition stores in the region have been rocked by explosions since the start of the war.

What happened in Belgorod?

Early on Monday, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov raised an alarm with the Kremlin, saying a Ukrainian “sabotage group” had entered Russian territory in the Grayvoron district.

According to Russia, the raiders opened fire with mortars and artillery on residential and administrative buildings and civilian infrastructure. Russian air-defence forces reportedly shot down drones over the region.

Moscow later said it was carrying out a counterterrorism operation.

Gladkov said one elderly lady had died while being evacuated, but that no civilians were killed in the clashes.

He described the situation as “extremely tense”.

Social media users said air raid sirens rang out and that checkpoints had been targeted.

Fighting continued for a second day. At midday on Tuesday, Russia said it had pushed back the attackers and that 70 had been killed.

On Tuesday, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington, DC-based based think-tank, said that two “all-Russian pro-Ukrainian” groups had crossed the border with tanks, armoured personnel carriers and other weaponised vehicles, citing Russian sources.

Who was behind the attacks?

Russia accused Ukraine of launching the attacks, but Kyiv has denied involvement.

Throughout the war, Ukraine has not taken responsibility for any attacks against Russia, saying its fight is purely defensive.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti, said the purpose of the alleged Ukrainian mission in Belgorod was “to divert attention from the direction of Bakhmut”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, said on Twitter that Kyiv had “nothing to do with it” and suggested that an “armed guerrilla movement” had emerged to oppose “a totalitarian country”.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev accused the United States, European Union and United Kingdom, which he referred to as “the sponsors of the Kyiv regime”, of being responsible for “sabotage”. Kyiv’s denial was “an absolute lie”, he said.

Ukrainian news broadcaster Hromadske, citing Ukrainian military intelligence sources, said that two armed Russian opposition groups, the Freedom of Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), consisting of Russian citizens, were responsible for the attack on the Belgorod region.

Asked about reports that the attackers were ethnic Russians, Peskov said: “They are Ukrainian fighters from Ukraine. There are many ethnic Russians living in Ukraine. But they are still Ukrainian militants.”

What do we know about the anti-Kremlin militias?

The RVC was founded by a far-right Russian national last August and is comprised of Russians who have been fighting in and for Ukraine against their own country.

The group has also been active over the border in Russian territory, and claimed responsibility for a raid there in March.

The Ukrainian military intelligence agency says the RVC is an independent underground group inside Russia that also has a unit in the Ukrainian Foreign Legion. The Foreign Legion says it has nothing to do with the RVC.

Late Monday, the RVC published video footage on its Telegram feed appearing to show fighters operating an armoured vehicle on a country road inside Russia. The Reuters news agency was able to identify one of the men as Ilya Bogdanov, a Russian national who received Ukrainian citizenship in 2015 after fighting for Kyiv against Russian-backed forces in Ukraine’s east.

The Legion and the RVC completely liberated n/a Kozinka, Belgorod Oblast. Forward units have entered Graivoron. Moving on. Russia will be free! — "Liberty of Russia" Legion (@legion_svoboda) May 22, 2023

The Freedom of Russia Legion – also known as the Liberty of Russia Legion – says it was formed in spring 2022 “out of the wish of Russians to fight in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine against Putin’s armed gang”.

It says it cooperates with the Ukrainian armed forces and operates under Ukrainian command. It has claimed responsibility for the attack in Belgorod and says it has been fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military intelligence agency’s spokesperson said on Monday that the attacks in Belgorod only involved Russian citizens and that they were creating a “security zone” to protect Ukrainian civilians. He did not confirm or deny that the forces operating there are a Ukrainian unit.

The Freedom of Russia Legion said on Twitter that it had “completely liberated” the border town of Kozinka in the Belgorod region and its forward units had reached the district centre of Grayvoron, further east.

“Moving on. Russia will be free!” the group wrote.

What’s next?

The attack on Russia has upped the ante and comes just as Moscow announced the capture of Bakhmut, the eastern Ukrainian city levelled by months of fighting.

Kremlin spokesman Peskov cast the attack as an “invasion” of “serious concern”, promising “great efforts in response”.

On Monday, according to Russia’s RIA Novosti, Peskov also said that work was under way to “squeeze out Ukrainian saboteurs from Russian territory”.

According to the UK, the attacks highlight Moscow’s struggles in the war.

“Russia is facing an increasingly serious multi-domain security threat in its border regions with losses of combat aircraft, improvised explosive device attacks on rail lines, and now direct partisan action,” the British defence ministry said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Podolyak has said that Kyiv is continuing to monitor reports “with interest” and is “studying the situation.”
