B&G H5000 instrument display

Product Overview

Overall rating:, manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

B&G is the only company that currently produces a range of instruments specifically designed for sailing. It became clear during two days trialling its new equipment aboard three yachts in Palma that B&G is no longer a name that should be solely associated with racing. Its new range of instrument displays, chartplotters and autopilot systems will appeal to all types of sailor, from cruiser to professional racer.

The three systems of particular interest are Triton displays, Zeus multifunction chartplotters and the new B&G H5000 graphic display. We have highlighted the features of both Zeus and Triton systems before. Many of their sail-specific features are shared and overlap with the H5000 (see sail specific features below). The B&G H5000 helps bridge the racer/cruiser gap.

B&G H5000 display

The most impressive thing about B&G’s latest autopilot display is how easy it is to use. The powerful instrument system is intuitive and has a 5in colour graphic display. It allows users to access deep level menus easily (down to the jacuzzi temperature in the options list). The ability to program the H5000 remotely using any web-enabled browser makes the system even more practical. All the data on the H5000 can be viewed remotely using a tablet or phone.

We used the B&G H5000 graphic display to simulate race starts and calculate laylines to a mark. We were able to control the system easily and wirelessly, calibrate and configure it using an iPad.

At sea the H5000 display can be used as a chartplotter to programme routes or race courses thanks to the clarity of its screen. It is packed with sail-specific features, including dedicated pages such as SailSteer, Startline and WindPlot.

Five keys are used to access all features over eight pages, and five of these pages can be customised.

The hardware

The H5000 range includes a variety of different processors to suit sailing types. The CPU has three levels of software, including Hydra to suit cruisers and cruiser-racers, Hercules for racers and Performance for large racing yachts and superyachts. These processors can calculate data at up to 50 times the speed of its H3000 predecessors, says B&G. Yet the H5000 is 20 per cent cheaper than the H3000.

A mix of Triton instruments and Zeus plotter instruments will suit cruising sailors. The H5000 Hydra system combined with a Zeus plotter will appeal to cruiser-racers, and the H5000 Hercules is designed for pure racers.

Prices ex VAT: H5000 Graphic Display, £742

A  full H5000 system for a 40ft race yacht costs around £10,000 (including Hercules CPU, six displays, wind, speed, depth, heading and 3D Motion sensors and a wi-fi-1 router).

Sail-specific features

This is a clever visual aid that shows a host of key data on one page. The data is shown in graphic relation to a yacht sailing head-up within a compass rose and wind scale. It can be a lot to process on one page, but once familiar with the format, I found SailSteer to be a powerful aid. The ability to see heading and COG plus the true wind angle (‘T’ triangle) is particularly useful. Basic laylines to a mark/waypoint and a tide indicator are also shown.

Available on Zeus and H5000

This feature shows a clear illustration of port and starboard tacking angles over a chart, plus a sailing calculated ETA to a waypoint. A benefit of this for cruisers is the ability to see when a headland can be cleared. Once a waypoint or mark is entered, laylines can also show the optimum tacking angles. These show historical windshifts as dotted lines. Laylines can be correctly calculated for tides using data from the plotter or instruments.

Available on Zeus

B&G’s Autotack function can pilot a boat automatically through a tack or gybe when linked with an autopilot, wind, compass and speed transducers. It felt odd to witness our Hanse 445 auto-tack its way to a mark using optimum computer-calculated laylines. This, combined with our self-tacking jib, turned us into passive crewmembers. A useful additional feature is the ability to set the desired tacking speed and angle, up to 30º to the apparent wind.

Available on Zeus, Triton and H5000

WindPlot is a graphical plot of mean historical wind data. It clearly shows any oscillations or trends in the breeze, which helps determine whether it has increased, or shifted. Current wind data is also displayed.

Available on Zeus, Triton and H5000.

This is a very useful pre-start race tool for the B&G H5000 system. It clearly shows distance to the line and to each end, as well as any bias advantage and angle. It also indicates how many boat lengths might be gained or lost on that particular tack. Hercules has an additional time to burn option that uses the software’s integrated polar table.

Available on B&G H5000 only (CPU required)

The appeal of B&G’s sail-specific instruments is clear. Some features may appear gimmicky, but the prime functions we have highlighted here add value without increasing cost. B&G’s H5000 autopilot system is now impressively intuitive. The Hydra version has three unique core features: SailSteer, Startline and a web portal. Cruising sailors can have an ETA and wind data clearly displayed on a page within the Zeus chartplotter or H5000 display. The Laylines feature proved useful to avoid overstanding waypoints. For racing sailors, the Startline feature of the H5000 may render the bowman’s pre-start role redundant. The H5000 will suit race boats from 30ft and cruiser-racers from 36ft.

Going wireless on a B&G Hydra 2000 System

Hydra 2000

An owner of a J109 contacted us this week to see if there was any way we could breath new life in to his B&G Hydra 2000 racing instrument system. Much as he would have liked to install a complete new instrument systems, high performance racing software from Expedition and a couple of wireless tablets, after being forced to buy a new set of sails, his budget was seriously depleted.

The Hydra 2000 performance instrument system from B&G was really popular with racing yachtsmen in the late 1990s and early 2000s and although it has been replaced by the H3000 system for the last 10 years, there are still a lot of boats with these systems and it is a tribute to B&G that many are still giving good service.

The basic system consisted of the transducers, feeding in to the main processor unit and displaying the data on a series of Full Function Displays (FFDs) and large 20-20 displays. In order to get data out of the system, you needed to have an 8 button NMEA FFD and this was connected to the system via a round white NMEA junction box. The plan was to connect our WLN10 Wireless NMEA Server to the FFDs NMEA output and then to wirelessly stream the NMEA data to the popular iRegatta App running on an iPad.

Identifying the right wires was not so easy as both the NMEA Input and Output pairs of wires were Red(+) and Blue(-) but opening the NMEA junction box and looking for the Violet NMEA Output(+) wire from the FFD was the best way to identify them. Then it was just a case of connecting up the WLN10 as shown below, turning the system on and ensuring that the Yellow “Data” LED on the WLN10 started to flash.

Once installed any wireless computer/tablet/phone could be connected to the WLN10 and with suitable software/app receive the wireless NMEA data. This particular customer had installed iRegatta on his iPad (£13.99) and was very impressed when all of the instrument and GPS data suddenly started to appear on the displays. With performance racing features, polar calculations and good logging/analysis facilities iRegatta seems to be excellent value and very useful for club racers or  in fact any yachtsman who likes to get from A to B in the quickest, most efficient way.

This is so cool, I will try it on this one, too:

Thank you so much for your inspiring blog.

Daniel Frey

I recently purchased a boat with a B n G Hydra 2000 instrument suite and autopilot. It is an early model and I cant find the junction box. I would love to install the WLN10. Has anyone else had success?

I don’t believe the junction box is critical as it is literally a box with some terminal connectors inside and I would not be at all surprised if it is not fitted in some installations and the cables just spliced together. What is critical is whether you have an Full Function Display (FFD) with an NMEA interface or not. If you do then you should be able to connect one of our WLN10 units to this or if you have a performance processor box in the Hydra system, this will have a couple of NMEA ports on it and you could connect the WLN10 to the PPB rather than the FFD.

Next time you are on the boat, I would do a bit of research to see exactly what units you have and then work out the best place to take an NMEA output from.

This solution is very good except WLN10 wouldn’t transmit AIS data, which seems essential these days. I don’t think, Fastnet 2000 can carry AIS messages, say if data from receiver is plugged into NMEA input of the performance processor.

That makes me think of WLN30 multiplexer. Will it work with H2000 if connected in a similar way or to NMEA output of the performance processor, plus AIS data on second NMEA input?

How many inputs can WLN30 drive when wired in parallel to its mixed NMEA output port?

Hi Vladimir,

You are correct, the Fastnet 2000 cannot carry AIS data, so to comibine the B&G data and AIS data the WLN30 would be the best solution, as it multiplexes data from each of its three NMEA 0183 inputs.

As far as NMEA 0183 Outputs are concerned, the WLN30 just has the single output but you can configure this to either output the combined, multiplexed data at 38400 baud or to output autopilot data from a navigation application running on one of the wireless devices connected to the WLN30 at 4800 baud.

Hope this helps.

Best regards PAUL

New Sailing Electronics from B&G

b and g yacht instruments

B&G Zeus Touch

I spent last Saturday on a friend’s sailboat at a cruising fleet race hosted by our local yacht club. As we approached the windward mark, there was much discussion as to when to tack, and in the end, we overstood—and then spent the next leg debating the benefits of “coming in hot.”

This would not have happened had we had the new Zeus Touch from B&G aboard. One glance at the chartplotter would have shown us port and starboard laylines, distance and time to the mark, and even which way the windshifts were trending, should we want to bank on a shift to get us there faster. It would have sorted out the current thing, too, and accounted for its set in timing the upcoming tack.

Once the gear of choice for high-end (and well-heeled) racers, Navico’s B&G division is in the process of rebranding itself as the electronics maker with devices developed for sailors of all stripes. For the record, Navico’s Simrad is intended for the sports-fishing and power-cruising crowd, and Lowrance is tailored for anglers.

b and g yacht instruments

Zeus Touch works like most other multifunction display screens, allowing you to overlay information on the basic chart data. In this case, radar imagery has been added.

Yes, B&G still caters to the Volvo Race, Vendée Globe, and Grand Prix navigators, but its new Zeus Touch line is aimed squarely at the rest of us, with a 7-inch plotter priced just under $1,000 (8- and 12-inch screens are also available). Add in a masthead wind sensor, a speed and depth sounder, and a display or two, and for right around $2,500 you can have yourself a boatload of information, right there at your fingertips.

New with Zeus Touch (the touch is for touch-screen navigation) are a couple of nifty features. SailSteer is a graphic display of all your vital sailing numbers, including speed and course, wind direction and speed, wind direction over time (to spot shifting breeze trends), and average wind speed over time (to differentiate a building breeze from gusts so you know when to reef). It even displays laylines on its compass rose-like interface to help you steer more efficiently. SailTime complements all this and takes into account both wind and current to determine speed and distance to a waypoint and can display the information in various ways.

With Zeus, you can also use your choice of cartography, and overlay upon it graphics that show you your laylines to a waypoint, wind shifts, and all the other sorts of information you might choose to view, such as radar, weather, etc.

Interface the chart plotter with a B&G autopilot and you can essentially leave the driving to Zeus. You can sail in either navigation mode (steer to waypoint) or wind mode (sail to apparent wind angles), and your boat will automatically tack at the push of a button. You’ll have your hands free to trim sheets.

A few of us got to try out the new Zeus system a few weeks ago during a B&G demo day. I came away impressed. In addition to an easy-to-master traditional plotter, the B&G software lets you graphically “see” what the wind and current were doing, and that’s a real benefit, whether you’re racing to a mark, or tacking along a rock-strewn shore trying to make a harbor entrance. And if you’re an iPad user, which more and more skippers are these days, you can use the GoFree wireless module and App to take control of the system anywhere on the boat from your tablet screen. Neat stuff.

Hi guys, Anyone have any advice/experience with B&G wireless wind instruments vs their wired one? And while we’re talking wind instruments, any recommendation for a more budget friendly companies? I plan to use this with a B&G Vulcan. Thanks!

RitSim

Have a friend that has the wireless. The yard ( and my friend) forgot about he battery in the mast head. So in the spring the mast was stepped and nothing worked. After a few trips up the mast, we determined that the battery was dead and the solar recharging wouldn't handle the issue. We bought a battery on eBay ($5 vs B&G $50). So take the mast head portion home and place it in the sun or use another battery care plan.

For convenience of installation the wireless is very attractive. But. Signals can go week or fail. Power means you will have to climb the mast, dead battery or bird poop on the solar cell. Wired will mean a little more expense to gain the assurance of more reliability. They all use a little different design for the transducer. Look at them and choose the one that looks the strongest. Strong enough for the birds not to destroy. Best of luck.

We liked the flexibility of wireless. You can put the displays wherever you want, without having to drill holes and then run wires through them. Our TackTic system (now Raymarine) even came with a display on a lanyard that the navigator could wear around his or her neck. It allowed you to switch between any of the information on any of the screens. If you determine the locations aren't as wonderful as you first thought, the "fixed" displays can be moved without having to repair holes or re-route wires. We routinely changed out batteries so did not have trouble with them.

Our setup included everything: AWI, Depth, Boatspeed, True wind and Windspeed. We had it for about 20 years and sent some parts back for refurbishment (or repair after encounters with winch handles.) but nothing surprising. Overall it worked well and we were very pleased with it. Not having wires to get corroded can be quite nice.

I have the wired version. I installed it in 2020, 2021 and again in 2022. I am on my third unit. The first one stopped working and was covered under warranty. The second one broke at the start of last season - apparently from a bird. Even though it was out of warranty, B&G agreed to replace that one at a discounted price. They also said they don't cover physical breakage, which I thought was strange. The wireless was not recommended due to my mast height so I went with the wired. It's great when it works.

FastOlson said: Thanks for sharing your experiences. Can you share with us how often you changed out batteries, and on which sources or repeaters? (I have read adverse commentary about this part of the scheme for many years.) Click to expand

Tin Kicker said: I have the stupidly expensive wireless version and it's worked flawlessly once figuring out how to connect the Bluetooth. You need to follow the instructions precisely, with the sensor very close to the base hockey puck AND within the time-out period. My problem was that the N2k network would power the hockey puck and it'd time out before the Vulcan could initialize. Having the wired unit would be more reliable if I could've gotten the wire down without pulling the mast (no thanks), but I did get it to work. Photo shows pairing the two: Trick was to start the Vulcan, THEN switch on the N2k & plug in the battery, and QUICKLY do the BT sync. Am on my second year with the battery. I do like that for the winter months the unit can be removed and kept safe in the cabin. I have it near a window so the battery doesn't go flat. (Even if it is a lithium which should be fine.) btw - Had the basic Vulcan 7 for a while before adding the wind sensor and it is amazing how much functionality the wind sensor adds. Click to expand

The window is electrically clear and it keeps the puck out of the weather.

Very helpful thread, thank you all. I see B&G sells a "sail pack" here! Is this a good match with a Vulcan 9? Are there any redundancies with what the Vulcan offers? And as you'll see in the Defender link, there is a warning. Is that a concern for a potential auto-helm in my future? Thanks again!

The Sail Pack you referenced is just for the sensors, it does not include displays. Once connected to the network, the data will be displayed on the Vulcan or any other NMEA 2K compliant display. When using the these sensors with a MFD that has gps (most seem to have) the gps puck is redundant. Radar and I think the AP need very precise heading information delivered faster than what comes from the GPS. If you add an AP you will need to add a heading sensor to make it work. Check the other B&G packages offered by Defender.

old B&G instruments.

I have now started the Dufour project & one of the first problems is the existing Brookes & Gatehouse instruments. The system thats fitted (circa 1970s) is the Hornet with - 360 wind; magnified wind direction; wind speed & yacht speed, instruments. The indicators are mounted in a case above the companionway so that the are visable from the helm. (you can see Here) Although they work, the display indications (graduation marks) are so faded as to make them almost useless. I do not want to get new instruments yet as this would be 1000k plus. B&G (who I might add were very helpfull) will service the old units, but again thats £600 plus. Does anyone have any idea where I may be able to obtain some old units that are readable? poter.

£600 sounds good!

Re: old B&G instruments. I agree with alienzdive. B and G Hornet was a great system, so £600 to get the whole thing 'back to new' has got to be worth considering. Provided they can fit new dials, which seem the main problem, I'd go for it. Years ago I had a set of the old 'grey box' ones and tentatively went to B and G when they got a bit sick. Astonishingly, they came back in fantastic condition and were used until I sold that boat. May still be working for all I know! cheers Jerry

Try Tinley Electronics - they specialise in repairing older B&G instrumentation. here Might be cheaper than B&G themselves.

I'm just about to upgrade my Hornet 4 with a new computer and FFD and will probably have 2 digital speed readouts and a cruising computer thing. If these are compatable let me know.

top unit versus a dedicated Triton or other display. For entertainment value, if it was wireless the following would be the troubleshooting; I leave this here for posterity. make sure the 320 Bluetooth is still 1) on the network and 2) in range try bringingung it closer to the if feasible. .If those are good your probably crapped out... If you call support for a new , better have the number of the instrument. You can make your own battery packs see CF thread on the subject, if you invest in an Amazon spot welder and some of the correct rechargeable AAA's and some heat shrink and nickel straps to spot weld join the .

Since it is wired I would presume you want to test (verify snug/tight connections and/or reseat) your T connections for the instrument and immediatly upstream of any devises not showing up in your device list. Make sure your terminator is good on the end of your network. Swap it out to test. Swap out any T connector you think might be a problem for empiracal testing. Measure voltage on the network. Find the 2K pinout TURN OFF THE N2K , and insert two small copper wires in any female connector into the + and - be sure to dogleg them away from each other, fence them off with electical tape MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT TOUCH. When multimeter DC voltage meter is connected, turn on the N2K . Should be 12V or above. If not check the T connector that is the power supply to make sure connections are good and you have a well connected ground. Assuming your wind and wire is good that tests about everything I can think of around it.

and Terminator on the network. Note that I use the singular "Terminator", as I am assuming you have a B&G wired wind sensor (eg. WS508, WS608), because they include the terminating resistor and should be connected directly to the backbone and not as a drop-cable.

It seems like the network is powered correctly (check the voltage on the NMEA 2000 power cable pairs (red & black). Similarly measure the resistance across the CAN-H and CAN-L (white & blue) which should be 60 ohms.

One of is a useful tool for helping to break out the NMEA 2000 power & data pairs. As others have indicated, take care not to short the cables!

Seems like the Zeus has "lost" the setting for the wind data source. This can occur if the CAN Bus address number for the wind sensor has changed. Have you added or disconnected any devices on the network recently? Devices automatically assign CAN Bus addresses when they are powered-on and any change in the network may cause them to arbitrate their addresses.

First of all, to see if the Zeus can "see" the wind sensor, goto Settings->Network->Devices. It should list all of the devices connected and powered-up on the NMEA 2000 network.

Secondly, goto Settings->Network->Sources and see if a source is currently selected for Apparent Wind and True Wind.

If not, either manually add a source, or goto Settings->Network->Sources and select Auto Select. The Zeus should then scan the devices on the NMEA 2000 network and automagically assign sources to the respective devices.

, Wind, Tack, Nav, Data and as an ACP2 with Pilot. Everything is working correctly at the moment. The is located in 2500km away. I plan to switch to N2K and use an Actisense NWM-1 to feed the data of wind, speed and into the N2K system. For this I have set up a test system here at home with 12V, wind display, MHU-486,. Works perfectly so far, display gets correct data of wind direction and wind speed. Now the problem: I am not getting any sentences/signals from the wind display. I connected a male connection cable to the female end of the display (on the left seen from the back), grab the green wire with the alleged NMEA signal and the black one as 0 volts and send it to a multiplexer with RS232-USB to my PC. No signal! No matter which wire combination I use, there is no data. To check I connected other NMEA devices (GPS) to the multiplexer, the signal is good there. I exchanged the wind display for another wind display, also no signal. Question: What are the requirements to get the NMEA 0183 data from the display? I've read all the relevant information regarding B&G here in the forum and tried to take note of it. Can't get any further and have no idea why no data sets are coming.
Sorry for my bad englisch

€60 oscilloscope to verify there are actually signals that make sense; with a little trouble you can discern what the baud rate is. This takes away half of the uncertainty. Then look at the signal levels, determine whether it is RS-232 or 422 and get a proper adapter for those levels. In your case you already have one but the setup for baud rate is now easier.
