Kiel Yacht Charter

Sailing from the Netherland coast to the Baltic, the Kiel Canal is the most frequented route by pleasure yachts. Via the safe harbours Borkum , Helgoland , Cuxhaven , the canal begins in Brunsbuttel , Elbe river and goes to Kiel-Holtenau , Baltic.

The Kiel Canal (German: Nord-Ostsee-Kanal ), until 1948 known as the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal , is a 61 miles (98 kilometres) long canal in the German Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein that links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau . An average of 280 nautical miles (519 kilometers) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. This not only saves time but also avoids potentially dangerous storm-prone seas. It is considered to be the most heavily used artificial seaway in the world; over 43,000 ships passed through in 2007, excluding small craft.

Canal Entry/Exit

Closely east of the entrance basins you find the "waiting area" for small pleasure craft intending to enter the canal. Under certain wind and tide conditions the waiting can be quite unpleasant. Beware of tidal currents setting in this area. The waiting area is camera surveilled and the lockmaster will see waiting yachts. Please do not wait in the entrance areas or even the entrance basins of the locks - pilot boats are leaving and entering these easterly basins constantly at great speed.

Yachts are allowed to enter the lock, if a single white occulting light is shown on the signalmast. Most times this will happen on the easterly signal mast, managing the easterly (older and smaller)lock system. Very seldom entrance permission is given for the western (and bigger locks , that are heavily used for the commercial shipping.)All other light combinations do not affect pleasure boats. Please be patient, sometimes it can take some time, until permission to enter is given.

Once in the entrance basin you go straight forward into the open lock - the lock signal mast will also tell you by a single white occulting light, which lock to enter.

In the lock you tie up to the rings on the floating pontoons (wooden logs with an anti-skid rubber surface). Do not tie up to the rings in the wall, depending on the tidal situation the water level will rise more or less.

If you choose to stay in Brunsbuttel just turn to port - the pleasure boat harbour is situated close west of the new locks. Leaving the yacht there has to be negotiated with the harbour master.

Brunsbuttel

Approach is best on the eastern side of the Kiel Fjord, after you have passed the narrows of the Friedrichsort-Lighthouse. But be aware of the small prohibited area closely southwest of the lighthouse - it is clearly marked. Continue your way into the Fjord towards Kiel until you see the signal masts of the channel entrance on starboard. The waiting area is on the northern side of the locks, just in front of the Kiel-Holtenau pleasure boat harbour in the entrance area of the (older and smaller) northern locks, which normally manages the pleasure boat traffic. The same entrance procedure as in Brunsbuttel applies: single white occulting light shows permission to enter the locks. Tie up to the rings on the wooden pontoons.

Payment of the canal fees:

If travelling the entire canal all fees are paid in the lock master's tower in Kiel-Holtenau - this applies to both directions. You only pay to the lockmaster in Brunsbuttel , if you intend to leave the canal at the Giselau Lock (to continue down the river Eider back to the North Sea ) or if you enter the canal here with the destination as Brunsbuttel .

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

Additional yacht harbours in the Kiel canal:

• At about Km 66 (north side) you can leave the Kiel Canal into the Ober-Eider, continuing to Rendsburg.

Two marinas are at hand (fuel on the pontoon) - the yacht harbour run by the local sailing club Regatta Verein Rendsburg is situated close to downtown Rendsburg, with all facilities and the railway station close by. A well protected marina to leave a boat for a longer period of time - please negotiate with the harbour master.

• At Km 67,5 (on the north side) another small marina is situated in the Borgdtedter Enge . Also fuel on the pontoon, shops are in the small village of Borgstedt .

Why the Kiel Canal, shortcut to the Baltic, is a fascinating mini cruise all of its own

The Kiel Canal can be a fascinating voyage in a yacht, as Detlef Jens reports

More than once I’ve sworn never to cruise through the Kiel Canal again, always after a seemingly endless stretch negotiated in foul weather or in an underpowered yacht. But when the weather plays ball and if time is on your side, a passage through the Kiel Canal can be one of the most interesting parts of a voyage to or from the Baltic.

Moored in front of the Gieselau-side lock gates or at anchor in the idyllic lake of Flemhude before Kiel, it is hard to believe the Kiel Canal – aka the North Sea-Baltic-Canal or Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (NOK) in German – is the world’s busiest shipping route. In total some 43,000 ships and around 20,000 or so private yachts go through the canal every year.

The idea for a canal to link the North and Baltic Seas came up in the Danish-German war of 1864. Otto von Bismarck recognised that a waterway would allow German ships to slip between seas undisturbed by Danish cannons. However, his contemporaries were not quite so visionary and planning did not begin in earnest until 1878, when Emperor Wilhelm I finally approved a vast budget of 156 million Goldmark. Just as impressive is that the huge project came in within budget.

In the end, it was Wilhelm II who finally opened the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, as it was then called, in 1895. The second Wilhelm (half-English, incidentally) was partial to his racing yachts, so the canal was useful for more than warships. It helped establish Kiel Week, also founded by Wilhelm II, by considerably improving access to the Baltic for international yachts.

Indeed, the Kiel Canal has always been a door to the east for foreign sailors. Frank Mulville transited with his family on Transcur in 1967. As he writes in his book Terschelling Sands : ‘We started motoring down the canal after a very expensive lunch at a restaurant near the jetty, keeping well into the side out of the way of the stream of ships. The banks of the canal soon became wooded and rural, with occasional vistas over the countryside of Schleswig-Holstein, which was a pleasant agricultural land – not unlike parts of Essex.

‘The volume and diversity of the shipping was extraordinary. The boys soon devised a game of guessing the nationality of passing ships and Patrick drew up a complicated scoring sheet. There were tankers and freighters from 20,000 tons downwards as well as small German, Dutch and Danish coasters. Sometimes we were unable to identify the ensigns even with the aid of the almanac – countries like Kathiri, Gabon, Dahomey and Chad defied identification.’

It can seem like nothing has changed. I have been through the canal many times, but the transits that linger in my mind are those slow passages made on hot summer days. Once or twice I have dropped anchor at a wider section and dived overboard to cool off in the peculiar, brackish water. Much of the canal is too narrow for this and sailing is not allowed, but you can motorsail if there is a good following breeze.

Given the canal’s length of just over 50 nautical miles, you can cover it in a long day of motoring; yachts are restricted to daylight hours only. But it is better to split up the trip and stop for a night at one of the permitted berths. The most peaceful are: off the Gieselau Lock at 40.5km; in Lake Obereider (entrance off 66km); Lake Borgstedt (67.5km and 70km); and in Lake Flemhude (85.4km). Kilometres are counted from west to east, from Brunsbüttel to Kiel and clearly marked ashore.

The story behind the image

You know it by now: I am from Kiel in Germany , a city with a long maritime history. Sailing has always been an essential activity here, for centuries. So I was really glad when I could acquire a set of historic postcards that covers the topic of sailing in Kiel. The images were probably shot during Kiel Week in 1905, but there is no caption to confirm this guess.

This postcard, sent in 1906, most likely shows the yacht harbour that is located at the Kiellinie , near the Blücherbrücke . The buildings in the back are on the eastern shore of the Kieler Förde in the village Ellerbek.

The photographer is unknown, but the image has been published by Neue Photographische Gesellschaft in Berlin-Steglitz in 1905 (often abbreviated as NPG ). This widely unknown company had serious impact on streamlining photo processing by providing a way to print images on rolls of paper instead of single sheets, enabling mass printing of postcards and photos. There’s a good website covering the history of the company (in German.)

Since the 1972 Games, the five Olympic rings have been as much a part of the sailing mecca of Kiel-Schilksee as the Eiffel Tower is of Paris, where the world's sporting elite meet in midsummer for the climax of the XXXIII Olympiad of the modern era. As the last possible dress rehearsal before the sailing competitions in Marseille, Kiel Week 2024 will be dominated by the German Olympic aspirants. Sailing fans will be able to experience their role models up close and ask for autographs at half-time on Wednesday. Before and after, the major event from 22 to 30 June offers nine days of hands-on sailing.

Laser ace Philipp Buhl (see portrait) decided early on to start off Kiel and will be battling from the first day (22 June) for a place in the Ilca 7 Medal Race on Wednesday (26 June). The former world champion not only pulled along his Norwegian sparring partner and bronze medallist from Tokyo 2021, Hermann Tomasgaard, but also the reigning world champion and Olympic champion Matt Wearn from Australia.

Their races will be the focus of KielerWoche.TV, which will report live from the regatta courses every day. The public can follow the races on the big screen in the Audi Sailing Arena, where the public award ceremonies will also take place and there will be live and DJ music for everyone from half past seven in the evening.

The entire Kieler Woche regatta attracts young and old to the event area on the harbour apron of Schilksee and Strande over nine days with hands-on activities, information stands from numerous partners as well as entertainment, amusement and culinary delights. On the first Sunday (23 June), youngsters with an interest in competition and sailing can even gain their first regatta experience at the Rewe Kids Cup. Up to 30 youngsters will compete for non-cash prizes for all participants under the guidance of a sailing star on optis close to the shore on the Strander Bucht.

Farewell to the Olympic team

The medal races in the Olympic disciplines on 26 June in the morning are the sporting highlights of the event half-time. However, the whole day will be characterised by the five rings. The German Sailing Association is planning a big farewell for the German Olympic sailing team with an autograph session. The final nominations will be made by the DOSB on the same day in Schilksee.

Susann "Sanni" Beucke also earned her Olympic laurels three years ago with silver in the 49er FX and then dedicated herself to offshore sailing. Kiel Week is a home game for the Strander, albeit a short one this year. Between two Figaro regattas, she will be in Schilksee on Monday (24 June) to sign autographs in the Helly Hansen tent in the morning, sign her new autobiography "Against the Wind" and give a talk for young sailors. In the afternoon, the 33-year-old will take to the water as patron of the inclusive Bat Sailing Team.

The big ships are also back

If you can't wait for the thrilling sight of stately sailing boats, you should head to the keel line of the inner fjord on Saturday morning. The traditional eel regatta will start there in front of the old Olympic harbour Düsternbrook at the Kiel Yacht Club at 9 am in several groups. The multihulls will be the first to set off, including the twelve-time Kieler Woche winners Helge and Christian Sach with their ten-metre-long and lightning-fast M32 cat "NTT Data", the top contenders for the honour of "First Ship Home" in neighbouring Eckernförde.

The origins of Kiel Week

It was sailing enthusiast Kaiser Wilhelm II who helped set the course for Kiel Week with his passion. Imperial Chancellor Prince von Bülow knew why the last German emperor and king was so committed to Kiel's sailing activities: "Nowhere was he happier than here."

Since its premiere on 17 June 1882, the event has - with a few interruptions - always been a reflection of its time. Famous yachts such as the imperial "Meteor IV" and the "Germania" not only heralded a golden age of German yacht building with their memorable duels, but also characterised Kiel Week shortly after the turn of the century.

The outbreak of war in 1914 ended the first major chapter of Kiel Week. It was not until 1920 that the sailing festival slowly got going again with 54 yachts. By 1933, the regatta had regained its size and internationality with 133 starters, before the skies over Germany darkened again after the "seizure of power". In 1936, the Olympic regatta is celebrated on the fjord.

The new beginning

The first Kiel Week after the Second World War takes place in 1948. The new foundations are laid by the Kiel Yacht Club, the North German Regatta Club, the Hamburg Sailing Club and the Seglerhaus am Wannsee association. In 1964, 230 boats take part again, including 165 international boats from 24 nations. In 1972, an Olympic regatta is organised for the second time and a large windjammer parade is held in Kiel for the first time.

The division into an Olympic and an international half in 1993 brought a huge change, with up to 5,000 participants and 2,000 boats too many to sail at the same time in the heyday. Giants such as Willy Kuhweide, Paul Elvstrøm, Dennis Conner, Jochen Schümann, Russell Coutts, Sir Ben Ainslie and Peter Burling lent the event a great deal of glamour. But the record holder is Wolfgang Hunger, a child of Kiel: the 62-year-old three-time Olympian has won Kieler Woche an incredible 24 times and has not given up hope of winning a 25th title. Either way, he will remain the king of the fjord for the foreseeable future.

Es waren enorme Kräfte, die am Montagmorgen auf die Bayesian wirkten: Eine gefährliche Wasserhose erwischte die Superyacht vor der Küste Siziliens mit voller Wucht – sie kippte innerhalb von Sekunden auf die Seite. In Minutenschnelle verschwand das Schiff unter der Wasseroberfläche.

Während die Retter am Freitag die Leiche von Milliardärstochter Hannah Lynch (†18) bargen (das siebte Todesopfer des Unglücks), widmen sich Ermittler der Ursache. Noch immer ist unklar, wie es überhaupt zu der Tragödie kommen konnte.

Der Eigentümer der italienischen Herstellerfirma Perini, Giovanni Costantino, sagte vor dem Untergang, die Yacht sei «eines der sichersten Boote der Welt».

Das bestätigt auch Pawel Ziegler, Professor für Nautik und Schiffsführung an der Hochschule Flensburg (D). «Diese Yachten sind hervorragende Schiffe – auch bei hohem Seegang sind sie normalerweise ausserordentlich stabil und seetüchtig», sagt Pawel, der beruflich und privat selbst segelt, zu Blick. Wie konnte die Bayesian also sinken?

Im Fall der gesunkenen Bayesian haben verschiedene Faktoren dazu geführt, dass die Crew keine Chance mehr hatte, das Schiff zu retten.

Unvorhersehbare Wasserhose

Die Behörden haben mittlerweile bestätigt, dass für das finale Umkippen der Segelyacht vermutlich eine Wasserhose ursächlich war. «Solche Phänomene sind sehr lokal», erklärt Ziegler. Sie seien unvorhersehbar und können auch nur einzelne Schiffe betreffen. «Eine Wasserhose ist extrem. Da kannst du im Zentrum kaum noch atmen.»

Aufgrund der hohen Wassertemperaturen im Mittelmeer treten solche Phänomene häufiger auf. «Langsam sind in Europa die Bedingungen erfüllt, die tropische Wirbelstürme begünstigen.» Eine unglaubliche Hitzewelle habe Sizilien in den vergangenen Tagen heimgesucht. «Das spielte sicher eine Rolle», so der Experte.

Die Bayesian-Crew entschied vor dem Nächtigen, den Kiel einzufahren. Dies zeigen erste Untersuchungen. Der Kiel ist das «Rückgrat» eines Boots, einer Yacht oder eines Schiffs. Wenn der Kiel eingefahren ist, vermindert sich die Stabilität stark. Ohne Kiel würden Segelyachten während eines Sturms einfach «umgepustet».

Da der Kiel bei der Bayesian teilweise eingezogen war, verminderte dies die Stabilität des Schiffs, erklärt Ziegler. «Es ist dann gegenüber Windstössen viel sensibler.»

Öffnungen nicht geschlossen

«Bei widrigen Wetterbedingungen müssen immer alle Öffnungen eines Schiffs geschlossen werden», erklärt der Professor. Darunter fallen Fenster, Schotten, Luken, Glasfronten und Türen. Das Schliessen der Öffnungen habe die Crew der Bayesian im aktuellen Fall wohl vernachlässigt. Darauf deuten erste Erkenntnisse hin.

Nachdem die Yacht auf die Seite gekippt war, drangen die Wassermassen ungehindert ins Schiff ein. Die verschiedenen Massnahmen seien möglicherweise ungenügend umgesetzt worden.

Wurden alle Sicherheitsvorschriften eingehalten?

Wasserhosen könne man nicht vorhersehen, aber man könne sich entsprechend vorbereiten. Zu den Vorbereitungen gehören das Abarbeiten von Checklisten sowie regelmässige nächtliche Wachgänge.

Auch den Experten macht das Unglück betroffen. Ziegler zu Blick. «Dass ein 56 Meter langes Schiff so schnell verschwindet, darf einfach nicht passieren.»

Neben der Staatsanwaltschaft von Termini Imerese hat mittlerweile auch die Hafenbehörde Ermittlungen eingeleitet. Es soll die Frage geklärt werden, ob alle Sicherheitsmaßnahme an Bord der Luxusyacht eingehalten worden waren.

Update vom 21. August, 14.29 Uhr: Wie die italienische Küstenwache berichtet, hat ein Tauchteam erstmals eine der Kajüten in der gesunken Yacht erreicht. Durch ein Loch im Rumpf schafften es Einsatzkräfte der Feuerwehr in die „Bayesian“. Der Zugang zum Raum gelang jedoch nicht, die Tür sei durch Möbel und andere Materialien blockiert. Ein Tauchroboter unterstützt das Team.

Update vom 21. August, 13.31 Uhr: Die Segel-Reise in Italien sollte für Mike Lynch ein „Neustart“ sein, sagt der britische Politiker John Gummer dem Guardian . Tech-Milliardär Lynch war nach dem Freispruch in einem Betrugsprozess mit der „Bayesian“ unterwegs gewesen. Sein Verschwinden sorgt für große Anteilnahme in England. Gummer gibt die Hoffnung nicht auf, dass Lynch noch lebend gefunden wird: „Er (Mike Lync, d.R.) hat einen großen Beitrag für Großbritannien geleistet. Seine Unternehmen haben die britische IT in den Vordergrund gerückt – und er wollte es wieder tun. Wir beten, dass er es wieder tun kann.“

Überlebende von Yacht-Unglück schickte beunruhigende Drei-Wörter-SMS

Update vom 21. August, 12.00 Uhr: „There were deaths“, „es gab Tote“. Nur drei Wörter beinhaltete die SMS, die eine Überlebende des Yacht-Unglücks an ihren Vater schickte. Der berichtete dem Mirror von der beunruhigenden Nachricht seiner 36-jährigen Tochter. Seitdem komplette Ungewissheit für den Briten. Der Mann erzählt: „Ich habe ihr zurückgeschrieben, aber sie hat mir seitdem keine Updates zu vermissten oder geretteten Personen gegeben.“

Wetterexperte Kachelmann: Yacht „Bayesian“ hätte auf Unwetter in Italien vorbereitet sein müssen

Update vom 21. August, 11.48 Uhr: Hatte die „Bayesian“ beim Unwetter vor Sizilien wirklich keine Chance? Wetterexperte Jörg Kachelmann glaubt das nicht, er spricht von „Fahrlässigkeit“ an Bord . Wettermodellen haben den Sturm prognostiziert und ein Gewitter fegte schon rund eineinhalb Stunden über die Region. Eigentlich genug Zeit, um zu reagieren, meint der Meteorologe.

Update vom 21. August, 11.41 Uhr: Mittlerweile ist ein Team britischer Ermittler in Porticello angekommen, meldet der Guardian . Noch am Mittwoch sollen sie eine „vorläufige Einschätzung“ vornehmen. An der Suche nach den Vermissten sollen die Briten laut italienischer Küstenwache nicht beteiligt sein.

Update vom 21. August, 9.56 Uhr : Wie konnte die Luxus-Yacht „Bayesian“ überhaupt sinken? Auf Video ist zu sehen, wie das Segelschiff mit einer Länge von 56 Meter in zwei Minuten vom Meer verschlungen wird. Zum Zeitpunkt des Unglücks am Montagmorgen herrschten extreme Wetterbedingungen vor Porticello. Doch ein Sturm dürfte nicht das tragische Ende einer Segelyacht in dieser Klasse bedeuteten. Der Rumpf der „Bayesian“ sei intakt geblieben, so Paolo Cori einer der weltweit führenden Experten für Segel- und Rennboote in today.it . Seiner Auffassung nach sei die Position des Schiffs-Kiels zu überprüfen.

„Bei einem 9-Meter-Kiel wäre die Bayesian vielleicht umgekippt, aber ohne zu kentern“, sagt Cori. Es sei wichtig zu prüfen, ob ein Bullauge am Rumpf offen oder die Fenster in der Lounge kaputt gewesen seien. Auch der über 71 Meter hohe Aluminiummast im Verhältnis zu Länge des Segelschiffs könnte in Extremsituationen, wie dieser zu einem kritischen Problem werden. Der Mast sei allerdings ein charakteristisches Element der „Bayesian“, betont der Experte. 2009 wurde es als das beste Kreuzfahrtschiff der Welt bezeichnet.

Ähnlich sieht das Bootsbauer Jan Maas in der FAZ . „Ein intaktes Schiff würde sicherlich nicht ohne Weiteres auf die Seite kippen und sinken. Es ist zu vermuten, dass es zu Schäden gekommen ist, die die Stabilität beeinträchtigt haben. Wenn das Schiff erst auf der Seite liegt, kann Wasser eindringen und den Auftrieb der Yacht so stark mindern, dass sie untergeht“, sagt Maas im FAZ-Interview. Bei dem Alumast handle es sich um eine ausgereifte Technik. Ein Rigg bestehe allerdings aus vielen Komponenten. „Wenn da ein Einzelteil versagt, kann es zu einer Kettenreaktion kommen.“

Das ganze Schiff wurde nach hohen Sicherheitsvorschriften gebaut. Eine Werft wie Perini Navi habe viel Erfahrung. Bei plötzlich auftretenden Wettersituationen könne es schwierig sein, den Anker zu lichten oder zu kappen, wie Beobachtungen aus der Vergangenheit zeigten.

Yacht-Drama vor Sizilien: Suche nach Vermissten geht weiter

Update vom 21. August, 5.50 Uhr: Die Suche nach den Vermissten der Yacht „Bayesian“ blieb bislang ergebnislos. Den Tauchern sei es gelungen, durch ein Glasfenster in den Rumpf des Bootes einzudringen – jedoch nicht in die Kabinen. Dies könne einige Zeit dauern, da Eingänge blockiert würden, berichtet das Portal Giornale di Sicilia . Zudem erschwere die Position der Yacht den Einsatz. Dieses liegt derzeit auf der Steuerbordseite.

Inzwischen ist ein bedrückendes Video aufgetaucht, das den Untergang der Luxusyacht vor der Küste Siziliens zeigt. Die Überwachungskamera einer Villa in Porticello nahm diese Szenen auf. Darauf zu sehen ist deutlich der Mast der „Bayesian“, im Vordergrund sind kleinere Boote zu sehen, es scheint in Strömen zu regnen. Innerhalb weniger Zeit verschwindet die Yacht von der Bildfläche. „In nur sechzig Sekunden kann man sehen, wie das Schiff verschwindet“, sagte der Besitzer des Anwesens gegenüber der italienischen Nachrichtenagentur Ansa.

Taucher suchen nach Vermissten der gesunkenen Luxusyacht vor Sizilien

Update vom 20. August, 21.01 Uhr: Am Dienstag haben Taucher die Suche nach den sechs vermissten Insassen der vor Sizilien gesunkenen Luxusyacht fortgesetzt. Im Einsatz an der in 50 Metern Tiefe am Meeresgrund liegenden Yacht sind Spezialisten der Feuerwehr, die für Tauchgänge auf beengtem Raum ausgebildet sind. Ein erster Tauchgang der aus Rom und Sardinien angereisten Spezialisten verlief nach Angaben der Feuerwehr ergebnislos, weil Möbelstücke den Zugang zum Inneren der Jacht versperrten.

Bei der Suche nach den Vermissten ist wegen der Tiefe, in der das gesunkene Schiff liegt, jeder Tauchgang auf zwölf Minuten begrenzt, wie Feuerwehrsprecher Luca Cari berichtete. Zwei Minuten davon sind für das Auf- und Abtauchen vorgesehen. Mehrere der jetzt beteiligten Spezialisten waren nach den Worten von Marco Tilotta vom Tauchteam der Feuerwehr von Palermo bereits am Wrack des Kreuzfahrschiffs „Costa Concordia“ im Einsatz, das 2012 vor der Küste der Toskana gesunken war. Damals waren 32 Menschen ums Leben gekommen.

Yacht-Unglück in Italien: Suche nach Vermissten dauert an – Einsatzkräfte erklären problematische Rettung

Die Bemühungen konzentrieren sich laut Tilotta darauf, in die Wohn- und Schlafräume der auf der Seite liegenden Yacht vorzustoßen. „Die Räume im Inneren eines Boots sind sehr beengt“, schilderte Feuerwehrsprecher Cari. „Wenn man auf ein Hindernis stößt, ist es sehr schwierig zu umgehen, genauso schwer ist es, Alternativrouten zu finden.“

Die mit zehn Besatzungsmitgliedern und zwölf Passagieren besetzte 56 Meter lange Luxusyacht „Bayesian“ war in der Nacht zum Montag in der Nähe von Porticello vor der Küste Siziliens in einem Sturm gesunken. Ursache war eine Wasserhose, eine Art Tornado über dem Meer. 15 Passagiere und Besatzungsmitglieder konnten gerettet werden. Eine Leiche wurde geborgen, sechs weitere Insassen des Schiffs werden vermisst. Bei dem Toten handelt es sich Medienberichten zufolge um den Koch.

Update vom 20. August, 18.00 Uhr: Nach dem Yacht-Unglück in Italien geht die Suche nach den sechs Vermissten „unvermindert weiter“. Das teilte die italienische Küstenwache laut Sky News mit. Demnach würden derzeit „Taucher prüfen, ob es möglich ist, sicher in das Wrack einzudringen, eine Operation, die durch die Tiefe und die Lage des Rumpfes auf dem Meeresgrund in etwa 50 Metern Tiefe, eine halbe Meile vom Hafen von Porticello entfernt, erschwert wird“.

Im Einsatz seien bei der großangelegten Suchaktion fünf Patrouillenboote und ein Hubschrauber der Küstenwache, ein Militärhubschrauber, Taucher, ein ferngesteuertes Fahrzeug, Marineeinheiten und Höhlentaucher.

Zudem wurde die Identität von zwei Überlebenden des Yacht-Unglücks bekannt: Es handelt sich um die beiden Südafrikanerinnen Leah Randall und Katja Chicken. Sie waren laut Sky News als Besatzungsmitglieder an Bord der Bayesian.

Update vom 20. August, 14.10 Uhr: Nach dem tragischen Unglück vor der Küste Siziliens gelten noch immer sechs Personen als vermisst. Die Suche nach ihnen gestaltet sich jedoch als schwierig. Den vom italienischen Festland beorderten Spezialtauchern gelang es laut Feuerwehr, in das Innere des Wracks vorzudringen und einige Räume unterhalb der Kommandobrücke zu untersuchen. Zahlreiche Hindernisse versperren ihnen jedoch den Weg, auch die Enge stellt sie vor Schwierigkeiten. 

Vermisste werden in den Kabinen im Unterdeck der Yacht vermutet.

Die Taucherteams der Feuerwehr bestehen aus zwei spezialisierten Höhlentauchern, die zwölf Minuten in der Tiefe bleiben, bevor sie aufsteigen, und sich ständig mit einem weiteren Team abwechseln. Derzeit wird geprüft, das Wrack unter Wasser zu öffnen, um sich Zugang zu verschaffen. Der Zugang zu den Kabinen im Unterdeck, in denen die Vermissten vermutet werden, ist noch immer versperrt.

Wie das italienische Portal Giornale di Sicilia berichtet, sollen Taucher bereits ein Loch im Rumpf des Segelbootes geöffnet haben. Durch diesen Spalt sollen Rettungskräfte nun versuchen, in das Innere des versunkenen Bootes zu gelangen. Noch immer ist jedoch unklar, ob sich die Vermissten tatsächlich im Inneren des versunkenen Schiffes befinden.

Update vom 20. August, 6.20 Uhr: Angela Bacares, die gerettete Frau des irischen Milliardärs Mike Lynch, schildert nach dem Untergang der Yacht dramatische Szenen. Das Unglück habe sich demnach frühmorgens ereignet. Sie und ihr Mann seien um vier Uhr aufgewacht, weil das Boot plötzlich „kippte“, wie die 57-Jährige der Zeitung La Repubblica sagte.

Ein Toter nach Yacht-Unglück geborgen

Sie sei aufgestanden, um nachzusehen, ob es einen Grund zur Sorge gibt. Dann hätten die starken Schwankungen für erste Schäden gesorgt, Glas sei zersplittert. Die Scherben verletzten mutmaßlich Bacares an den Füßen, weshalb sie aktuell nicht laufen könne und auf einen Rollstuhl angewiesen sei, berichtet die italienische Zeitung. Update vom 19. August, 21.30 Uhr: Mit Taucherteams und Flugzeugen wird weiterhin nach den sechs vermissten Passagieren gesucht. Zu diesen zählt auch der Besitzer des gesunkenen Schiffes, Mike Lynch (59), sowie seine Tochter Hannah (18), wie das Giornale di Sicilia berichtet. Lynchs Frau gehört zur Gruppe der Geretteten.

Neben den Lynchs handelte es sich bei den Passagieren um Mitarbeiter von Lynchs Firmen, die die Fahrt mit der Luxusyacht als Preis gewonnen hatten, so Ansa . Insgesamt 15 der 22 Passagiere der Yacht konnten gerettet werden. Einer wurde tot geborgen.

Erstmeldung vom 19. August: Santa Flavia – Wie die Küstenwache in Porticello nahe Palermo bestätigte, ereignete sich ein tragisches Bootsunglück in Italien. Dabei kam eine Person ums Leben, während sechs weitere noch vermisst werden. Eine Mutter, die das Unglück überlebte, berichtete von den dramatischen Momenten, die sich nach dem Kentern der Luxusyacht abspielten.

Die 35-jährige Frau und ihre einjährige Tochter befanden sich an Bord der Luxusyacht „Bayesian“, als das Unglück geschah. „Es war schrecklich. In wenigen Minuten wurde das Boot von einem sehr starken Wind getroffen und sank kurz darauf“, zitiert die italienische Nachrichtenagentur Ansa die Mutter. Sie berichtete weiter, dass es 11 Personen gelang, in das aufgeblasene Rettungsboot zu gelangen.

Die Mutter schilderte, wie sie ihre Tochter beinahe im Meer verloren hätte. „Zwei Sekunden lang verlor ich das kleine Mädchen im Meer, dann umarmte ich sie sofort wieder inmitten der Wut der Wellen. Ich hielt sie an mich gedrückt, während das Meer stürmte. Viele schrien um uns herum“, beschrieb sie den Kampf gegen die Wellen. Aus dem Krankenhaus wurde verlautbart, dass es dem Mädchen gut gehe. Die Mutter erlitt lediglich einige Schürfwunden, die genäht werden mussten. Erst vor wenigen Wochen mussten Passagiere von einer brennenden Luxusyacht gerettet werden .

Aus dem Krankenhaus wurde berichtet, dass Mutter und Tochter medizinisch versorgt und psychologisch betreut wurde: „Sie sind sehr erschüttert. Sie haben ein traumatisches Erlebnis durchgemacht.“ Nachdem das Kentern des Schiffes bekannt wurde, wurden zunächst sieben Personen vermisst. Eine davon wurde jedoch kurz darauf tot aus dem Wasser geborgen. Insgesamt befanden sich 22 Menschen an Bord, von denen 15 lebend an Land gebracht wurden.

Yacht liegt inzwischen auf dem Meeresgrund

Die gekenterte Luxusyacht gehörte dem Tech-Unternehmer Mike Lynch. Der 59-jährige Milliardär, der in seiner Heimat als der britische Bill Gates bezeichnet wird, gilt ebenfalls noch als vermisst . Sein Schiff liegt nun in einer Tiefe von 49 Metern auf dem Meeresgrund. Italienische Medien berichteten, dass mehrere Leichen in den Kabinen von Rettungstauchern entdeckt wurden, dies wurde jedoch bisher nicht offiziell bestätigt. Kiel Week is back and feels right

After the two September editions of 2020 and 2021, which brought the Kiel Week Regatta a lot of international recognition in the grip of the pandemic, the traditional date at the end of June feels right again. Head of Organization Dirk Ramhorst: “We live from the proximity to the many guests and want to enjoy the new, old freedom with them.”

This also includes the summer festival in the city center, which was sorely missed twice. The regatta at the Schilksee Olympic Center is emerging stronger. A separate opening ceremony on event area and, for the first time, the hosting of the welcome evening of the Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein are proof of the high status of the sailing sport also among politicians.

The period between two Kiel Weeks has never been shorter than from 2021 to 22 – a challenge for the entire organizing team. The number of participants proved once again that Kiel is on the wish list of many crews from Germany and abroad, whether with or without World Cup status in the Olympic disciplines. Some classes are experiencing a run. “This is a maximum recognition for the performance and commitment of the volunteers,” said Ramhorst, who also senses as DSV Vice President: “Kiel remains a milestone on the way to the Olympic Games.”

When a red line appears in the Manage2Sail registration system, the capacity limit has been reached. For the 49ers, the maximum number of participants in both classes was raised significantly, so great was the rush for the Olympic skiffs. Nearly 100 men’s crews covet admission to Kiel Week.

“We’ve also increased to three racing courses for the dinghies,” explains Principal Race Officer Fabian Bach, “because there were quickly 75 on the list for the women’s 49erFX as well.” Just as with the Nacra 17 catamarans, which have been increased to 40, the subsequent European Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, are exerting a pull.

For the German silver medalists from Japan last year, the first appearance after the victory in Enoshima will also be a very special one emotionally. “Yes, it will be our last regatta together in the 49erFX,” revealed Susann Beucke from Strande at the pre-event press conference in the Komodoresaal of the Kieler Yacht Club.

After careful consideration with helm Tina Lutz, the decision was made against another Olympic campaign. Beucke will from now on dedicate herself to offshore sailing, and will announce details of her Figaro project on Tuesday during Kiel Week. Lutz has gained a professional foothold in human resources management for a major Swiss corporation in Austria.

“We had a wonderful time together with many highs and leave the lows behind,” said Susann Beucke four days before her 31st birthday, “when it’s at its best, you should set off for new shores.” Those who know her have faith that she will one day win a world race. But before that, they both want to “enjoy our favorite regatta to the fullest.” At Kiel Week, Lutz/Beucke will compete once again in their Olympic boat.

They will be recognizable by transparent sails, because the South-North combination is already not making the switch to the new FX rig with black sails. Says Beucke, “That’s why we have no expectations in terms of sport, we just want to have fun.” At the class premiere in 2013, Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke, who once met at a press conference at Kiel Week, won just as they did in 2016 and most recently two years ago, so they are returning as defending champions.

The 49er Vice World Champions Tim Fischer and Fabian Graf will start for the Kiel Week co-organizers Norddeutscher Regatta Verein and Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee. The Kiel duo dominated the world elite at the World Championships in November in the Sultanate of Oman before robbing themselves of the gold medal with an early start in the final.

On their home turf, it comes to revenge with the world champions Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken from the Netherlands. “Whether we’re the hunter or the hunted doesn’t matter to us at all,” says the helmsman, “we’re not putting ourselves under any pressure at all.”

Relaxation with an intelligent sailing style is the recipe for success, just don’t tense up. In their seventh year together in the boat, Fischer/Graf have learned from past mistakes when they overperformed. This season, Tim Fischer is focusing on his master’s thesis in business administration at the University of Kiel, while his crewmate is now a sports soldier. Together with Jakob Meggendorfer and Andreas Spranger from the Bavarian Yacht Club and Max Stingele and Linov Scheel from the Kieler Yacht Club, they form a strong training team under coach Max Groy.

And where are the two-time bronze medalists from the 2016 and 21 Olympics? “We won’t be back until the World Championships in the fall,” explains Thomas Plößel. After completing his studies as a mechanical engineer, he works at the Reckmann company on roller furling systems for large yachts. Helmsman Erik Heil is continuing his medical studies.

After winning their first medal in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, the two had already impressively demonstrated that a longer break from training and competition need not mean an interruption in their success story.

Heil/Plößl will come to Schilksee anyway. They will open the Kiel Week Regatta 2022 on Saturday (June 18) together with Lutz/Beucke as well as Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer (Nacra 17) and the Kieler double leader Ulf Kämpfer/Hans-Werner Tovar (Lord Mayor/City President). “At 1300 hrs. parallel to the first races on the triangular courses, we will give a joint start signal on the event stage,” explains Dirk Ramhorst.

Kohlhoff/Stuhlemmer have also set their sights high on the foiling twin hull boat on their own doorstep. For the team from the north, it was already clear immediately after the Olympic bronze medal: “We’re going full throttle until 2024. World Championship bronze, also in Oman, was the first strong sign. Meanwhile, there is also a new focus at the ambitious helmsman. In May, Paul Kohlhoff became a father for the first time and now also enjoys “every free minute that we’re not on the water.”

On the final day of the Medal Races (June 26), he will celebrate his 27th birthday, and with his current foreshearer, perhaps even the third overall victory after 2015 and 16 (then with Carolina Werner). However, the competition will be tough. Italian rivals Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti are in the mix, as are John Gimson and Anna Burnet from Great Britain and Argentina’s sailing legend Santiago Lange with Victoria Travascio.

Kiel Week sees a premiere return in the 470 dinghy. It features the second mixed discipline after the Nacras at the Olympic sailing events. Anastasiya Winkel, Olympic sixth on Luise Wanser’s boat, now trims aboard her husband Malte. The Ukrainian-born sailor has been braving a double burden since the start of the war, as she is heavily involved in helping refugees. “Among them are some sailors, some of whom have come with their families,” the 28-year-old reports. The Kieler Yacht Club and the Norddeutsche Regatta Verein also help with training opportunities.

In addition, Anastasiya Winkel keeps in daily contact with her mother and 90-year-old grandmother, who can no longer leave Old Shevsk due to old age. The industrial city is located in the Luhansk region only about 50 kilometers from the embattled metropolis of Sjewjerodonezk. Of what used to be more than 100,000 inhabitants, only about a third are still there. Winkel: “So far, at least, my home has not been bombed. I sincerely hope it stays that way.”

Given these circumstances, it is difficult to concentrate on competitive sports. A 20-day training camp in Marseille provided a welcome change before Kiel Week. Anastasiya Winkel’s Olympic coxswain Luise Wanser (Hamburg), who was one of the few women to remain at the tiller in the new discipline, was also there, now with Philipp Autenrieth in the trapeze.

“Exchange and comparison within the national team and with other countries are the only way to establish ourselves among the world’s best,” says Malte Winkel, “so we’ll play with our cards on the table as long as we can.” The Winkels won one of the training regattas in the south of France and gained self-confidence on the way to their dream of representing the German colors “in Paris” the year after next.

“Due to Tokyo 2021, we are basically just at the beginning of the Olympics, which have been shortened by one year, but we are already intensively preparing,” said DSV Sports Director Nadine Stegenwalner, who would like to fill all ten sailing disciplines and sees “the potential for it everywhere.” However, the qualification of nations will already be a higher hurdle than before, because the total number of athletes in sailing has been further reduced by the IOC.

In the international boat classes, the 11th ACO Musto Skiff World Championship and the Nordic Folkboat Gold Cup stand out this year with around 50 starters each. Of the single-handed sailors, Iver Ahlmann has a double home game. The 2011 European Championship runner-up comes as the 2020 Kiel Week winner and managing partner of the Büdelsdorf-based ACO Group, a leading international company for drainage technology and wastewater treatment.

After ten years of ACO Musto Skiff World Championships, the company is also a sponsor of Kiel Week. “Our claim has recently been ‘we care for water’, which fits very well with sailing,” explains Iver Ahlmann, “and sustainability, which is also emphasized by Kiel Week, has always been ideal for our values.”

In sporting terms, he will probably have to bake smaller rolls, fears the KiWo defending champion. “My preparation was more like damage limitation,” says the 39-year-old, house building and the fourth child have demanded other priorities. Ahlmann names Britain’s Jamie Hilton, Dan Vincent and Robbie Wilson alongside sailing pro Peter Greenhalgh and South African Andy Tarboton, international class president, as World Cup favorites. In addition, the 29ers are once again calling for the Euro Cup in Kiel. With around 150 youth skiffs, they provide the largest field of participants at Kiel Week. After the sensational win in 2021, the junior team of the year comes from the East Holstein village of Zarnekau. Helmsman Anton Sach with his brother Johann is one of last year’s youngest ever winners as a 14-year-old.

The top talents also won the YES regatta (Young Europeans Sailing) of the KYC at Whitsun as a dress rehearsal in a superior manner and are thus entitled to claim the only German starting place at the Youth Worlds, the youth world championships in the Netherlands (July 8 to 15).

With already more than 160 registrations also the offshore sailing registers a stately popularity. The opener on Saturday morning (June 18) to Eckernförde, which from now on is only traditionally called Aalregatta, enjoys the greatest popularity. At the Kiel Cup (Monday to Wednesday) the organization goes new ways and opens the classical short races also for yachts of the Yardstick rating; a comparison calculation with ORC inclusive.

In addition to the daily up-and-downs, middle distances around fixed sea marks will also be held. The Senatspreis on Thursday and Friday has again been explicitly tailored to two-person crews (double-handed), while the Silbernes Band one day later will go around the northern tip of Langeland overnight.

Wohl kaum etwas steht so sehr für Reichtum wie die schwimmenden Paläste, die sich die extrem Wohlhabenden dieser Welt von den Werften bauen lassen. Der Prunk kennt kaum Grenzen: Die "Azzam" ist mit 180 Metern die aktuell größte Motoryacht der Welt. Damit ist sie ähnlich lang wie kleinere Kreuzfahrtschiffe wie zum Beispiel die "Amadea" (193 Meter) oder die "Astor" (176 Meter).

Das Magazin "Boote Exclusiv" hat ein Ranking der 200 größten Motoryachten der Welt aufgestellt. Hier sind die Top Ten.

Die 2013 gebaute größte Yacht der Welt gehörte Scheich Chalifa bin Zayid al-Nahyan aus den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten. Er starb im Mai 2022. Wer nun Eigner ist, ist nicht bekannt – es gibt Vermutungen, sein Bruder habe das Schiff übernommen. Gebaut wurde der schwimmende Palast in drei Jahren von der Lürssen-Werft in Bremen . Die Maschinen leisten 70.000 Kilowatt (95.000 PS) – damit kann die "Azzam" bis zu 30 Knoten (55 km/h) schnell fahren.

Zur Ausstattung sollen zwei Hubschrauberlandeplätze, ein Mini-U-Boot, ein Raketenabwehrsystem, kugelsichere Verglasung, zwei Schwimmbäder, ein Kino, eine Diskothek sowie ein Salon mit einer Fläche von 520 m² gehören. 80 Crewmitglieder kümmern sich hier um 36 Gäste.

Möglich übrigens, dass die "Azzam" schon bald vom Thron gestoßen wird: 2026 könnte die 182,90 Meter lange "REV Ocean" von der norwegischen Vard-Werft die Top 200 neu anführen.

Die mit einer Bruttoraumzahl von 20.361 voluminöseste Yacht der Welt liegt die meiste Zeit im omanischen Maskat. Sie wurde in Genua gebaut, 2016 übergeben und verfügt unter anderem über einen Hubschrauberlandeplatz.

Die Superyacht ist eine von vielen des russischen Oligarchen Roman Abramowitsch. Darüber hinaus besitzt er die 2021 gelieferte "Solaris" (139,70 m), den Versorger "Garçon" (67 m), die Amels 180 "Halo" (55 m) und die "Aquamarine" (50 m).

Die riesige Yacht wurde ursprünglich 1996 auf Kiel gelegt und zwischen 2001 und 2005 für Scheich Mohammed bin Raschid al-Maktum fertiggestellt. Dem Premierminister der VAE gehören unter anderem das Burj Al Arab und eine Pferdezucht. Sein 9.150-Tonner läuft maximal 26 Knoten (48 km/h) schnell und kommt bei hohem Tempo 8.500 Seemeilen weit, also mehr als 15.000 Kilometer.

Bis zu 115 Gäste kommen in 50 Suiten unter, um deren Wohl kümmern sich 88 Crewmitglieder auf insgesamt acht Decks. Zur Ausstattung gehören ein Hubschrauberlandeplatz, ein Speisesaal für 90 Gäste, ein U-Boot, ein Hummertank und ein Squash-Court.

Um in die Top-200-Liste aufgenommen zu werden, war eine Länge von exakt 75 Metern nötig. Beim letzten Ranking im Jahr 2022 reichten noch 73,70 Meter. Die Eintrittsschwelle in die Top 100 stieg von 88,00 auf 90,00 Meter an. Neun Neuheiten über 100 Meter Länge sind dabei, vier davon lieferte die deutsche Lürssen-Werft. "Der Unterhalt einer 45-Meter-Yacht schlägt mit rund 1,8 Millionen Euro pro Jahr zu Buche, wer ein 75-Meter-Format besitzt, muss zwei Millionen Euro mehr in die Hand nehmen", sagt "Boote Exclusiv"-Chefredakteur Martin Hager.

Die "Blue" hatte im Juli 2022 ihre Jungfernfahrt von Bremen in Richtung Mittelmeer . Die 22,50 Meter breite Yacht hat einen Tiefgang von 5,50 Metern und kommt auf eine Bruttoraumzahl von 15.320, gut 600 weniger als die "Dilbar". Die "Blue" hat einen Hybridantrieb mit zwei Verstellpropellern und einem Azipod (E-Motor in einer drehbaren Gondel) für vollelektrische Langsamfahrten. Auf Fotos sind zwei Hubschrauberlandeplätze zu erkennen – weitere Details zur Ausstattung sind nicht bekannt.

Noch ein russisches Schiff: Nach langer Schwebephase, in der die USA den Eigner Alischer Usmanow bereits mit Sanktionen belegt hatten, beschlagnahmte das BKA nach Beginn des Ukraine-Kriegs die Yacht. Usmanows Schwester wurde als rechtmäßige Eigentümerin ermittelt, die "Dilbar" lag ab 2022 in Hamburg auf dem Trockenen, nachdem sie ursprünglich für die turnusmäßige Fünf-Jahres-Überprüfung dorthin gekommen war.

Nach dem Tod von Qabus bin Said, Sultan von Oman, wurde die "Al Said" zum Kauf angeboten. Auf den Bildern eines Auktionshauses wurde ein sonst unüblicher Blick ins Innere gewährt. Zu sehen waren unter anderem ein Sitzungssaal und eine Disco. Die Yacht besitzt eine 300-Mann starke Crew, nimmt Tender der 25-Meter-Klasse auf und zahlreiche Autos. Im Juni 2022 verschwand der 15.850-Tonnen-Koloss vom Markt und soll angeblich im Nahen Osten verblieben sein.

Bis vor fünf Jahren war die "A+" als "Topaz" bekannt. Sie befindet sich im Besitz von Scheich Mansour Bin Zayid al-Nahyan, der auch die "Blue" (Platz 5) geordert haben soll. Die zwei eingebauten Dieselmotoren leisten 5.877 kW (7.990 PS) und bringen die "A+" auf eine Geschwindigkeit von 25,5 Knoten (47 km/h).

Politische Verwicklungen machen auch vor Yachten nicht Halt, wie man schon am Beispiel der Exemplare mit russischem Eigner sehen kann. Das gilt auch für diese Yacht: Fahd bin Abdulaziz al-Saud ließ seine Staatsyacht Anfang der 1980er Jahre im dänischen Helsingør bauen.

Nach dem Tod des saudischen Königs übernahm Thronfolger Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz, zuletzt verfügte sein Sohn Abdul Aziz bin Fahd über die mit einer Bruttoraumzahl von 4.620 "kleine" Gigayacht. Ihn soll Kronprinz Mohammed bin Salman nach Tweets gegen König Salman und VAE-Herrscher Mohammed bin Zayid 2018 unter Hausarrest gestellt haben. Im selben Jahr wechselte die Betreibergesellschaft. Durch die Größe der Yacht braucht es 60 bis 65 Crewmitglieder, um sie im Vollbetrieb zu bereedern.

Neu im Ranking ist die "Opera", die von der Lürssen-Werft gebaut wurde. Ihre 146 Meter basieren auf dem Neubau "Sassi", der im September 2018 im Bremer Schwimmdock durch ein Großfeuer fast völlig zerstört wurde. Das Wrack wurde schließlich zurück nach Hamburg gebracht, wo auch schon die ursprünglichen Metallarbeiten stattgefunden hatten. Die "Opera" hat Platz für 50 Übernachtungsgäste.
