1975 Vancouver Vancouver-27 Offshore Cutter

  • Description

Seller's Description

Are you looking for a comfortable well-found offshore cruiser at an affordable price? Wendelin is one of those good ole boats. A proven design with a pedigree that includes sailing to New Zealand, Hawaii and Mexico (three separate trips which all departed from the Pacific Northwest). Weve owned Wendelin since July 2000. In 2009-10 we completed a refit before sailing north around the northern tip of Vancouver Island, south to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, and up the Sea of Cortez to Guaymas. We’ve had the most amazing adventures in the Sea of Cortez and south along Pacific Mexico. She is currently stored on-the-hard in a secure privately owned facility in San Blas Mexico (just north of Puerto Vallarta, 80 or so NM along the Riviera Nayarit, past Sayulita, Rincon de Guaybitos etc.)

The sails, halyards and sheets are all in good shape. The upper and lower shrouds were upgraded in 2010. The interior was recently painted but is in need of a couple of coats of varnish. The topsides could use a paint job as could the deckif youre particularly enthusiasticand needing something to do other than sail😊 The bottom is in great shape. It received a fresh coat of bottom paint in Feb of 2024. There have never been blisters on her hull. In 2000 three coats of inter-protect were applied. The 12 hsp single-cylinder Yanmar diesel is not running at the moment. A rebuild of the head is underway.

Wendelin is a great boat, very well equipped, sea-kindly with a very balanced helm. She has been a good friend to us. Shed work well for a experienced single-hander with a passion for sailing and exploration. Knowledge and experience with diesel engines would be a plus.

For more information about this classic design, we can provide a copy of Robert Harris book Tracks on the Water about the origins of the Vancouver 27 and the article Test of Time Vancouver 27 published in the Classic Boat Magazine (June 2009).

Asking price $12,500 CAD ($9,500 USD)

Equipment: Please see to our ad on Craiglist Victoria for a detailed list of the equipment on board….and for more photos.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

The first in the Vancouver Yacht series, the Vancouver 27 is a ‘go anywhere’ pocket cruiser designed by Canadian Robert Harris in 1972. This sturdy 27-foot cutter was squarely aimed for couples looking to sail the world’s oceans. Purpose built for exactly this purpose, the first boat sailed successfully from British Columbia to New Zealand and back. The solid good-looking design attracted enough attention that molds were made from the second boat built. Various versions went on to be produced in Canada and in England and more than 250 have been built in total including the extended 28 foot version, the Vancouver 28, which is still being made in England today. Canadian production ended when the molds were destroyed by a storm in 1988.

Though small and relatively heavy, she’s uncompromising with few concessions to speed and performance. Under the waterline there’s a full keel with a cutaway forefoot which gives her a stable helm and good balance on all points of sail. In the UK the design was tweaked by adding three inches to the beam at the waterline to stiffen her up, the result being a pronounced tumblehome in the hull which the Canadian boats don’t have.

In breaking seas her high freeboard, neat cockpit and built in bridge deck help prevent water below. Her propeller and rudder are protected from grounding and fouling damage by the set-up of her keel, skeg and stern-post. Lots of headroom, plenty of stowage space and ease of handling are characteristic. As would be expected by the design she’s not fast nor particularly close winded but she’s easy to handle in all conditions and ideal for a short-handed crew. English sailor Rona House can testify to this having completed a solo circumnavigation in her Vancouver 27. The cutter rig gives maximum sail plan versatility and the outboard rudder allows for use of self-steering mechanisms that are a cruiser’s best friend on long passages. Experience has shown that her traditional hull design copes easily with the rigors of offshore passages, even when chock full of cruising gear.

Inside the Vancouver 27 is a sensible small-boat layout just made for a couple at sea with three berths being the norm, although a four berth layout was also available. The three berth version has no berth forward but instead has the third berth aft in the saloon leaving plenty room for stowage up front as well as space for a generously sized quarter berth, galley and chart table. 6′ 6″ of headroom heads up the comfort factor inside.

Buyer’s Notes

The majority of boats are to be found in the UK although some can still be found in North America.  New boat prices can be obtained from Northshore yachts and a current search of the used boat market reveals prices for these boats between 12,200 – 26,600 Pounds Sterling or 19,500- 41,500 Canadian dollars depending on age and condition. Although no major problems have been discovered, the heel of the rudder is one weak point that needs careful inspection.

Why the Cutter Rig Sailboat Is My First Choice for Cruising

The cutter rig sailboat has two jibs, the foremost one usually a high-cut yankee set on the forestay and the other a staysail set on an inner forestay. It's a flexible, easy to handle rig, which is why I - along with a lot of other cruising sailors - am such a fan of it.

Alacazam, a cutter, under sail.

Admittedly a cutter rigged sailboat is not quite as efficient to windward as a sloop rigged version, but its other benefits outweigh this small mark against it.

Often both foresails are on furling gears, but I prefer to have a furling gear on the forestay only so that I can get rid of the hanked-on staysail and replace it with a hanked-on storm jib if I need to.

The inner forestay (or cutter stay) exerts a forward load on the mast which has to be resisted. This usually achieved by either aft-intermediate stays or running backstays.

Types of Cutter Rig Sailboats

There are two variants of the cutter rig:~

One where the yankee is set on a bowsprit and the staysail attached to the bow.

This arrangement is normally found on heavy displacement sailboats , as a way of increasing the size of the fore triangle without having to extend the height of the mast.

No Bowsprit

The other where the whole rig is contained inboard, with no bowsprit like the sailboat on the right.

You'll find cutter rigs on sloops , ketches and yawls too.

Examples of these are shown below:~

Tacking a Cutter Rig Sailboat

This is slightly more complicated than with a sloop as you've got two headsails and an extra pair of sheets to deal with when going about. Here's how we do it on Alacazam :~

  • centralise the mainsheet on its track;
  • put the helm over and release the yankee sheet as she goes through the wind;
  • let go the working runner and set the other one;
  • let go the staysail sheet and haul in on the working yankee sheet;
  • haul in on the the staysail sheet;
  • trim the yankee until the telltales are flying nicely, then do the same with the staysail and finally the main.

Many staysails are set on a self-tacking boom, which means that going-about is simplicity itself. However, unless you do a lot of short-tacking with both headsails set, this benefit is outweighed by the additional hardware. In my view, that is!

An Island Packet 380 cutter rigged sailboat

The staysail boom may well mean that you won't be able to stow your upturned dinghy on the foredeck. Not that this is an issue in Harmonium's case as she carries her dinghy in davits.

Reducing Sail on a Cutter Rig Sailboat

Reefing a cutter in deteriorating conditions usually goes like this:~

  • put first reef in the mainsail, then;
  • put a few rolls in the yankee;
  • put second reef in the mainsail;
  • furl the yankee completely;
  • put third reef in the mainsail.

This will leave you with a deep reefed mainsail and a staysail set on the inner forestay, which should serve you well right up to full gale conditions. It's storm jib and trysail territory after that.

Off The Wind with a Cutter Rig Sailboat

On a reach you'll find it very easy to balance your sailboat perfectly with a cutter rig, such that the windvane self-steering gear will have no difficulty in keeping her on course.

But when the wind drops and falls well aft of the beam the staysail (now blanketed by the mainsail) starts to flap and disturbs any airflow into the yankee, you're effectively sailing under mainsail alone.

With a sloop you'd probably pole the genoa out to windward in these conditions and sail wing-and-wing.

This isn't an option with the cutter rig as you'd be under-canvassed with just a yankee set on the forestay - you'll need a spinnaker, a prospect that doesn't fill some sailboat cruisers' hearts with joy.

On Alacazam we just drop both sails and hoist our colourful asymmetric spinnaker, which is a classy name for a cruising chute.

Alternatively you could turn your cutter into a slutter...

The Slutter Rig

Slutter isn't a formal term - it sounds a bit derogatory - but most cruising sailors will know what's meant by it.

an aluminium cutter rigged sloop sailing in the Caribbean

It's so called because it's a combination of a sloop rig and a cutter rig, the crucial difference being that a furling genoa is set on the forestay in place of the yankee, but no staysail is set (initially) on the inner forestay.

This is a sloop rig at this point, so windward ability isn't compromised at all, and the genoa can be poled out when sailing downwind.

The inner forestay is likely to prevent the genoa blowing through smoothly when you go about, so it's best to roll it in a few turns before you go through the wind.

Reducing Sail on a Slutter

Reefing a slutter in deteriorating conditions might go like this:~

  • roll a few turns in the genoa
  • roll a few more turns in the genoa
  • first reef in the mainsail
  • second reef in the mainsail.
  • furl the genoa completely and hoist the staysail
  • third reef in the mainsail.

As with the conventional cutter you've now got a deeply reefed main and staysail which will sail through all but the most depressing conditions.

So what's it for you, slutter or cutter rig sailboat? We usually set the cutter rig on Alacazam , as it's a great reaching rig for cruising through the Windward and Leeward Islands of the Caribbean.

ABOUT CUTTER BOATS

The cutter rig sailing boat is a great boat to start sailing with. It has a flexible, easy to handle inboard rig, which is why many cruising sailors -are such a fan of it. Typically a cutter boat is a small, but in some cases, a medium-sized, watercraft yacht designed for speed rather than for capacity and traditionally a cutter sailing yacht is a small single-masted boat.

The cutter rig yacht will have two jibs, the foremost one usually a high-cut Yankee set on the forestay and the other a staysail set on an inner forestay.

There are two options of the cutter rig sailboat ; the 'bowsprit version', where the Yankee is set on a bowsprit and the staysail attached to the bow, usually found on heavier displacement sailboats or the 'no bowsprit' type where the whole rig is contained inboard, with no bowsprit.

You also find this type of rig on sloops , ketch boats , and yawls too.

Production Boats That Have Circumnavigated

Maine Sail

Hi All, I would like to start a list of links to known production boats, Hunter, Catalina, Beneteau, Jeanneau, O'day etc. that have gone around without serious modifications. The rules: 1- Production boats that have circumnavigated this list CAN include other than the above mentioned vessels but they MUST be similarly designed and constructed to the mentioned boats. The list will not include boats sold as "blue water", have a reputation as "blue water", have a full keel or cutaway, are known to be stoutly built etc. etc.... East Coast short jaunts, carib etc. does not count. Boats must have crossed either the Pacific or Atlantic oceans or both. Roaring 40's even better. 2- Boats shall have been, for the most part stock. No structural improvements, hull stiffening, chain plate mods, rudder mods, added bulkheads, drastic port light modifications (through bolting ports is fine) etc. etc.. Wind gen, solar, self steering, life rafts, & standard cruising equipment etc. are all fine. This is a list of non "blue water" production boats that have done it. 3- Submissions shall include a link to a blog discussing the circumnavigation or the boats name, make and model and the route they chose. 4- PLEASE DO NOT POST unless you have a boat that meets the above criteria. I want this list to be a tool for folks to use when these discussions come up so they can see that this CAN be done if you are competent and plan accordingly. 5- Posts in this thread that are not relevant and do not include the information will simply be deleted or moved to keep this discussion clean.

Sailor = Tony Skidmore Boat = Albin Vega Vessel Name = Lorna Doone Route Traveled = Victoria B.C. to Hawaii, Line Islands, Tonga, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Cairns Australia, Indian Ocean to Reunion, Durban, around the Cape of Good Hope and north to Antigua, Colon and through the Panama Canal to Balboa, to Hawaii completing the circumnavigation and then return to Victoria. Blog/Web Site = http://americanvega.org/images/Lorna_Doone_pt_1.pdf Last Known Location = Completed Personal Statements = Stock boat except for a refit before the trip. Singlehanded and completed in 30 months, from 1994 to 1996. EDIT: I'll keep this on the list for now but Lorna Doone was structurally modified and, IMHO, rather stoutly built to begin with. Not quite a typical "production" boat by today's standards...

Time Out

Sailor = Patrick Childress Boat = Catalina 27 Vessel Name = Juggernaut Route Traveled = Circumnavigation Blog/Web Site = http://www.catalinayachts.com/pdf/halfoffame/ACFB0.pdf EDIT: I'll keep this on the list for now but that boat was FAR from stock and was heavily modified.

Guys, Please feel free to copy & paste the format into your posts as it will make this reference far easier to read for future reference. Sailor = Boat = Vessel Name = Route Traveled = Blog/Web Site = Last Known Location = Personal Statements = You don't have to have all the bullets, but the more info the better. We also don't need the sailors full names just a John & Patti C. would be fine..

Ocean Crossing in my Hunter 41DS I just completed making 6500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean sea in my Hunter 41DS production boat. She performed very well with no structural improvements, in fact, if anything, the addition of solar panels, wind turbine, davits, SSB antennae might be considered a slight reduction in structural integrity. We experienced varied weather and sea conditions including 25-35 knot winds on the nose for over 4 days. We utilized a storm sail that worked perfectly sleaved over the rolled up headsail. We also flew a large a-sail in 15-18 knot tail winds with no problems. I must say, I did not feel I was on a whimpy boat and actually felt very secure with her pounding through some very steep waves and furthermore, when we finally reached the point of coastal cruising, we had much comfort with this production boat. I still have approximately another 8500 miles to go including one more crossing of the Atlantic ocean and can give a better update in 2 years. Don

The Coronado 27 I owned was originally commissioned in Sausalito by the first owner, sailed out of the San Francisco Bay, down the west coast, through the Panama Canal, across the Carribean, around Florida, up the east coast to the Chesapeake Bay. After three more owners, I bought it and eventually sold it to a young Navy petty officer out of Norfolk. When last spoken with several years ago, he was planning to head down the intercoastal and cross to the Bahamas.

Windjammer III

Hunter 460 Sailor = David and Jenny Boat = Hunter 460, 2000 model. Route Traveled = Atlantic crossing just completed from New York City to Lisbon via the Azores. Purchased boat in the British Virgin Islands and so have also sailed the Caribbean and east coast of the US. Intend to cruise Med for a few years before taking boat home to Australia. Blog/Web Site = http://windjammer3.blogspot.com Current Location = Portugal, Portimao General Comments = We experienced one gale on the way across and did not feel threatened or less than confident with the boat's ability to handle it. In fact the boat and wind vane coped very well. Windjammer III has had a different rudder fitted ie one with a stainless steel shaft which replaced the carbon fibre/frp-stocked rudder as there had been a number of failures of these type rudders on these designs. The replacement rudder is a stock item and was purchased through Hunter I might add. If I remember correctly, Hunter have had stainless stocked replacement rudders available since around 2005. I also converted the boat to a cutter rig from a sloop rig, which I'm pleased I did.
