Opinions on the Catalina 28

I'm seriously considering moving up from my Oday 23 for next season. I want to be able to stay aboard comfortably for a weekend or so with the Admiral and cruise to some of the great destinations we have nearby. My O'day is great for daysailing, but I'm getting old enough to want more comforts, such as standing up while below. One boat I've always liked is the Catalina 28. I remember being quite taken with it during a boat show or two, and I've always thought Catalina makes a great boat for what I want. The design checks off all of my boxes, and I saw a very well kept 1991 model yesterday. I'm still running the numbers on how much it will cost me to keep a bigger boat (as we all know, the purchase price is really not the driving factor), but I'm looking for any opinions or anyone who can share their experience with the 28. Thanks!

Aboard one many years ago and remember thinking it was very spacious

If the design checks all your boxes, including any financial boxes, it doesn't matter whether or not it checks ours.

We had a O'Day 23 and loved it , if it were not for the head room factor we might still have it . Back in the mid 90s' a young couple were my dock neighbors , they had a C28 but I think it was the Capri model . They really liked it but did comment on lack of storage space . Well it was more of a race boat . Sadly they sold it because the whole package deal was too much . If it were me I would be on the look out for a 27 Catalina . For one thing I just like the lines better also I don't know how you feel about a inboard engine but when we got ours it was welcome . It was though a whole new world , learning curve was doable and I was into it . Lots to like about the Catalina 28 - I've had my 1991 version since 2010 and don't see a need for anything bigger or newer. Lots of information and opinions at the Catalina 28 owners group... https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/catalina28/conversations/messages Mine is a wing keel which is great on Chesapeake bay. Engine is a Universal M3-20, plenty of parts available if needed, with a little bit of care it should last forever. Early on there were some issues with the mast strength but that was resolved with reinforcing plates at the halyard exits. Other than that I can't think of any known weaknesses or problems with the early version of the Catalina 28. Its a great boat for singlehanding or for a couple, will get a bit tight with 4 adults on board (although for a short cruise that is possible). The V berth is roomy, the salon is a good size (especially of you cut down the massive folding table). The galley and the head are bigger than expected on a 28 footer. The aft berth is big front to rear and side to side but it is a low ceiling. My guess is most owners use it for storage space and the occasional guest.

Here is the link to the official Catalina 28 Owner's Association. Tons of information about the boat. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/catalina28/info?guccounter=1 We owned hull #100 that was built in 1990. It was a tall rig with standard fin keel that ultimately was a bit impractical on San Francisco Bay. Most summer afternoons would find us in reef one or two. But, man was it fast in the "light" breezes of winter! The 28 had more headroom and longer berths than the 27 which I needed (6'1"). It really bought my wife into the sailing life as it had all the big boat features she needed like a real head and galley. It ultimately became a transition boat into our current C34 but she was quite enjoyable for the weekend sailing we were doing at the time. Somewhere after #100, Douglas went from single to double spreaders which most likely improved the heavy air handling characteristics. Compared to a C27, the C28 has more of a big boat "feel". For comparison purposes, I'd look at the C30's instead of the C27.

I bought our 1990 Catalina 28, hull #31, this summer. It was the only boat we looked at that my wife really liked. She is a wing keel and we have sailed from the Sacramento River to the SF Bay where we have been for a couple of months now, minus some time where put on new standing rigging. So far my only complaint is the small amount of storage area in the cockpit locker. I am happy to answer any questions with my limited experience.

Not sure if your current boat is a trailer sailor or not , but if stepping up to a boat that will be slipped , check your local area about slip prices - in my area a lot of marinas charge a minimum length , so you could pay 40’ length to slip a <30 ft boat , might make sense to bump up a bit if that would be case .

Nice boats. Chartered one a few years ago & was very happy with the way it handled. It felt quite solid for the size and they managed to put all of he big boat things in without it feeling too cramped.

I like the mid-ship head location.

C28 is a great boat. I like the aft-head layout much better than what's on the C27. I almost bought a C28 in 2010, but at that time we went with C250 because we were mostly going to daysail (much like OP). All versions of the C28 are nice, but we did really like some of the tweaks they did for the MkII version that started around 1995 - larger galley with composite countertops instead of melamine, plus factory transom seats. On both versions, the salon table is VERY functional, with option to drop one or both leaves to maximize table space or walking space as desired. Very functional. Overall I like the C28 better than the ubiquitous C30.

Thanks to all. Very helpful. Still haven't decided if I'm going to make an offer, but it's nice to know I have good taste.

catalina 28 sailboat data

My wife and I did a five-day charter on a Catalina 28 from Long Beach over to Catalina Island, and I freaking loved that boat! On the outside it’s a small boat. Easy to physically move it around at the dock, small enough to be nimble backing in a tight marina. Inside it’s a big boat. The galley was very usable, the v-berth was comfy for us (although we are not a tall people, I am 5’ 9” and she is 5’ 0”), the aft berth made a nice space for day lounging. On the morning of the fifth day as we were cooking breakfast my wife said “You know, I think I could live in this boat.” It is shy on storage space, and if you plan on showering in the head I hope you’re my height or shorter. If I was even an inch taller my head would have been scraping. The boat sails and motors well. We had to motor almost all of our first day, and it was fast and reasonably quiet. It has a very wide traveller, which I like. It tracks very straight. We didn’t have an autopilot, but on the way back I was able to lock the wheel and sail for a couple hours without touching the helm. Eventually the wave action got big enough that I had to start actively steering to correct our course. At the very end the wind picked up substantially. We didn’t have wind instruments, but someone on Sailing Anarchy who was in the same area on the same day reported sustained 30 knots. We were almost to the marina and had to head straight into the wind, so I turned on the engine and furled the sails. It handled fine in that wind, but the spray over the bow was ridiculous. I was 100% drenched after 15 minutes of it. A dodger would have been a nice thing.

Review of Catalina 28

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Catalina 28 has been built with different keel alternatives.

But be aware that even though a Wing Keel keel is very good for speed racing, a fishing nets and the like in the water can easily make you into a troublesome situation.

One option is a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.60 - 1.70 meter (5.25 - 5.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Universal M3-20 diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Catalina 28 is 2.01, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Catalina 28 is about 150 kg/cm, alternatively 844 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 150 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 844 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

Launched in 1971, the Catalina 27 has been a popular favourite, enjoying the kind of commercial success that’s led to one of the longest and largest production runs of its era spanning 22 years and 6,600 boats. From the outset she was designed to be affordable (some have even said cheap) for weekend excursions, club racing and coastal cruising – offshore work was always outside of the design scope. Yet despite this there has been at least one circumnavigation demonstrating that this vessel, with the right preparation and skills, can be an ocean passage maker. We’ve included this boat here more for its popularity than its inherent seaworthiness.

The Catalina 27 was conceived in a 1970 design partnership between Robert Finch, and the founder of Catalina Yachts, Frank Butler. Butler built an incredible number of 27s at his boat factory in Southern California using modern boatbuilding processes that are not too different to methods employed today. Initial production started in 1971. She had a incredibly spacious interior and she was affordably priced at a time when cruising sailboats had captured the public imagination. These factors helped the boat find immediate success, in fact in the first three years 1,500 boats popped off the production line – that’s ten per week.

Early models were only available with outboard engines, an inboard option of an Atomic 4 engine was added in 1973, which later expanded to other engine varieties in successive years. The outboard engine option was later phased out in 1989. For shallow waters, a shoal draft winged-keel version was introduced in 1979. And popular among club racers, there was a version with a taller, more efficient, high aspect ratio rig which added 24 sq.ft. of canvas.

Production spread also to Canada and the UK. Cooper Enterprises in British Columbia, at the time one of the largest Canadian boatbuilders, produced well over a thousand boats under license for the Canadian domestic market and are a common sight around BC waterways today. While across the pond in the UK, the boat was built under license from as early as 1971 under the brand name Jaguar for UK and European markets. These were produced in Essex by Eric Birch Yachts (from 1971) and Russell Marine (from 1975) with the hulls molded by Seamaster Boats.

In 1979 a young 28 year old Patrick Childress set off in his shoal draft Catalina 27, Juggernaut , on a successful 3 year single-handed circumnavigation which included a 6400-mile, 53-day passage of the Indian Ocean.

After an unprecedented 22 years of production resulting in 6,600 boats, production finally ceased in 1991. Catalina succeeded the long lasting design with an all-new water-ballasted and trailerable weekender, the Catalina 270.

Configuration

The Catalina 27 is a fin-keeler with a raked spade rudder hanging about as far aft as possible, pushed along by a masthead sloop rig that’s tall and efficient. The hull shape is shallow and beamy which is great for initial stiffness to the wind but reduces liveable volume below the waterline. Butler made up for this by drawing deep topsides and a high cabin top all while keeping the design sleek to the eye. The result gives this 27-footer class leading interior headroom and space.

Below deck can best be described as light and spacious, this boat offers so much accommodation that many are willing to forgo her flaws. The companionway and hatch is wide which poses a water ingress hazard at sea but is responsible for her spacious feel in the cabin while at anchor. There’s technically berths for six in the standard aft-galley layout – two in the forepeak and the port side settee will really only fit kids or very short adults, while the starboard settee converts to a cozy double berth, and finally there’s a starboard seagoing quarterberth. The galley with its two burner stove is located on port below the companionway while the head is located just aft of the forepeak on starboard and is comfortably sized. Opposite the head is a locker, but note, as is typical of boats this size, locker and stowage space is in short supply.

Construction

Construction was pretty light. The hull is of solid fiberglass and much thinner than typical offshore counterparts, particularly above the waterline where small impacts that would normally lead to just a scratch may result in fractures for the Catalina 27. Early boats, as a cost cutting measure, lacked proper backing plates on deck hardware, stanchions, and rails, which lead to cracked gelcoat and in some cases fiberglass delamination. This was remedied in later boats.

The feel of the helm is very light and she sails responsively, or to quote the ever humorous John Vigor in 20 Small Sailboats to Take you Anywhere, “She handles like a dinghy, which is hardy surprising since that’s what she basically is – a dinghy with grandeur”. She is relatively stiff and holds her canvas well in a breeze. All this makes for a fast boat that’s easily controlled. The downside is seaworthiness. For best results Vigor recommends keeping her cruising weight down, as reduced weight will reduce stresses on the rig and hull at sea.

Note that the Catalina 27 is a beamy boat, and like others, there is a tendency for weather helm on greater angles of heel that will require either reefing the mainsail to maintain balance.

Buyers Notes

More than 6,600 Catalina 27s were made, so there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re on the hunt for a boat to sail protected coastal waters at a good price then she’s a good choice. For offshore work do your research and make sure you’ve modified your boat according to recommendations – probably the most important are enlarging the cockpit drains, reworking the companionway hatch area to help direct water into the cockpit, and uprated rigging including chainplates for the aft lower shrouds.

Some known weaknesses with this boat are listed below:

  • As mentioned, early boats lacked backing plates on hardware, leading to cracks in the gelcoat and in some cases delamination of the GRP.
  • Through-hull fittings were poorly installed and secondary bondings of attachments in some cases were poor.
  • Leaky chain plates have caused bulkheads to deteriorate which in turn has increased the risk of rig failures.
  • Fuel tank installations were poor on early inboard models.
  • The original spreader sockets were made of cast aluminium which tended to crack when overstressed.
  • Through-hull fittings in early boats were simply pipe nipples glassed into the hull and will need swapping out for proper flanged, bolt-through bronze fittings.
  • While heeled, some have reported seawater back flowing into the icebox via the drain. Fit a proper seacock to the through-hull.

  1. CATALINA 28

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  2. The Catalina 28 Used Boat Review

The Catalina 28 has been in production for more than 10 years, and finding used models is usually not difficult. The cost of a Catalina 28 averages nearly 30 percent more than Catalina 27s of similar age. It is also lighter. Interior room will be smaller, due to the beam being 9' vs 10.5 for the 28. The 28 in reality is real similar in length width etc as is my Jeanneau that is labled a 30, but in reality, a std 29 or large 28' boat. The design is also IIRC about 15-20 yrs newer for the 28 vs the 27 and its various variants.

  11. Review of Catalina 28

The Catalina 28 has been built with more than one type of keel. One option is a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability.
