“Below Deck” — The Netflix Binge Cruisers Will Love

Netflix is known for introducing binge-worthy content to the platform.

And the latest has to be “Below Deck” — a reality series that came to Netflix in the form of two seasons in August 2020.

But the show itself was filmed way back in 2013 and has a total of 7 seasons and 105 episodes.

So why are people raving about the show? 

It’s a glimpse into a luxury escape — and the drama onboard

Below Deck follows the lives of crew members who live and work onboard a mega-yacht.

Season one follows the likes of Captain Lee Rosback, First Officer Aleks Taldykin, Chief Stewardess Adriene Gang, Second Engineer C.J. LeBeau, Chef Ben Robinson and Deckhand David Bradberry in their everyday working and personal lives onboard the 164-foot Honor .

The first release of the series averaged 1.4 million total viewers per episode.

All of the crew that is hired to be part of the show are licensed and certified, which involves a two-week course.

Captain Lee says: “ Each of the crew members has to have an STCW, which is a standard set by the maritime industry for watch-keeping and just being on board—it’s basic first aid, firefighting. It’s a two-week course and a certification they have to have before they’re allowed to work on yachts.”

The crew is filmed 24 hours a day , seven days a week working on the boat while being filmed by both hidden cameras and a crew. 

But what makes the show so addictive? 

For reality TV lovers, Below Deck is one of those shows with a brand that is instantly bingeable. This is because of the on-screen romances, drama, and professional and personal turmoils that are captured on screen.

Noah Samton, the senior vice president of the production for Bravo says that the yachting industry “attracts the kind of people that are good for TV. First of all, they’re a lot of young, attractive people. A lot of people that are sort of escaping their lives for some reason or have this adventurous streak in them. We’re really good at finding the people who are going to wear it on their sleeves.” 

And as with other reality TV shows, the cameras capture it all, sharing every aspect of their lives onboard.

The only place that they aren’t filmed is in the bathroom, but only one crew member can be in one at any given time.

Members have tried to get away with their personal antics being held in places without a camera — in one instance, a laundry room — but the crew quickly clocks on.

It’s this close look into their lives, combined with the personalities and the exotic locations, that make Below Deck so exciting to watch.

How is the show really filmed? Here are some of the secrets

When the show was first released there were some questions from fans about how ‘real’ the working lives were of those on screen. But the cast actually work as real-life stewards, sometimes up to 16+ hours a day, and sleep on tiny bunks.

T he charter company actually pays each cast member a base salary; the cast is also paid an appearance fee by the production company. And they’re allowed to take tips by guests. All their food is provided by the boat’s chef, as would be in the case if they were regular employees. 

The cast is not allowed to speak to, or interact with, the production team and cameraman in order to keep in line with the show’s guidelines. 

Captain Lee is actually in charge of the boat, including when and where they can sail and anything that needs to be considered in terms of the weather. He can also fire anyone at any time. Production is not allowed to have any influence on this.

The boat costs upwards of $300,000 per week to hire — which is why all filming is done during the six-week period. 

All cast members get three days off per season during the six weeks of filming on the boat. They can stay in a hotel room on those days, but they’re not allowed to communicate with each other. 

There are also advantages for the guests on the boat, as they are given a fifty percent discount on their journey — although they pay their own money to rent the boat and for their tips.

What’s the future for Below Deck?

So far, Netflix has releases only two series of the show, but we can expect more. For the ones that can’t get the show’s pristine sceneries out of their mind, sites like borrowaboat.com have boats and yachts for every taste available to rent, perfect to recreate the sailing lifestyle.

While there are only two series so far released by Netflix, we can expect more. And the new Below Deck season eight will likely premiere sometime in the fall of 2020.

With eight seasons now, it’s likely that there could be more in the future and that audiences will be able to continue to enjoy the drama-filled lives of those who work below deck and onboard the ship.

Below Deck: Superyacht TV show to return for two new series

US TV network Bravo has announced that superyacht TV show Below Deck will be returning to screens for two new spin-off seasons, Below Deck Adventure and Below Deck Down Under.

Premiering in early 2022, Below Deck Adventure will follow the escapades of explorer yachts cruising in the icy fjords of Norway , playing host to thrill-seeking charterers as they partake in adrenaline-fueled exploits while exploring the glacial waters and rugged landscapes.

Unlike other seasons that have been set in sunnier climes, such as Below Deck Mediterranean , the camera crew will follow charterers’ exhilarating activities in sub-zero temperatures, such as heli-skiing and dog sledding.

The crew will be pushed to new limits as they attempt to maintain a luxury service alongside managing the physical and technical demands of cold-weather cruising.

Below Deck Down Under will be aired on NBC’s Peacock streaming platform. This series, which is already well underway with filming, is taking place on the other side of the globe in Australia. Home to the Great Barrier Reef , Australia has some of the world’s greatest cruising grounds on offer, and the crew will be expected to provide activities for guests below and above the water, with scuba diving being one of the main draws of the region.

The TV show follows the secret lives of superyacht crews working on board charter yachts , capturing behind-the-scenes footage of their day-to-day obligations and interactions. Crews featured in previous series have worked on a range of superyachts available for charter , including 54 metre sailing yacht Parsifal III and 56.2 metre motor yacht The Wellesley .

Some crew members, such as Captain Lee Rosbach and Captain Sandy Yawn , have achieved something of a celebrity status following the success of the show’s earlier seasons.

Further details about the new series, including the crew cast, are yet to be announced but will be released in due course.

One of the main stars of the show is the 99m (325ft) superyacht CHRISTINA O , an iconic vessel that started life in World War Two as a Canadian frigate, she then was purchased by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1954, who transformed her into the most spectacular private yacht of her time. 

CHRISTINA O is one of the most iconic motor yachts ever launched, best known for her grand interiors and unrivalled level of luxurious amenities.

The renowned vessel went on to host a wealth of illustrious guests, ranging from Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra to John F Kennedy and Winston Churchill. 

With oak and iroko paneling, book-lined shelves and sumptuous pale-colored settees, the overall look of the salon is reminiscent of an old English country manor. Whilst the teak floorboards serve as a reminder of being at sea, and fascinating artworks by Renoir, Le Corbusier and de Chirico contribute to the overall grandeur of the setting.

Starring the likes of Daniel Craig and Kate Hudson, the murder mystery film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery  follows a tech billionaire and his group of friends who embark on a luxurious getaway to his private Greek Island. When someone turns up dead, it is up to Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to solve the case.

Netflix's extremely popular royal drama The Crown  has grabbed viewers' attention since 2016 as the show follows Queen Elizabeth II's reign intensely as well as all the well-renowned events that shaped the second half of the twentieth century.

What happened on The Boat on Netflix? Plot and ending explained 

The Boat is a 2018 thriller directed by Winston Azzopardi that fans are now zeroing in on in 2024—what with its mind-gripping plot and headache-inducing ending. It was first released to critical acclaim back in 2018, earning a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.7/10 on IMDb. the film stars Joe Azzopardi who plays the role of a lonely sailor who gets trapped aboard some mysterious yacht,

It's a story of survival, and one lonely sailor is in a desperate struggle against an increasingly perilous series of events: a storm, a sinking boat, and something in control of the vessel. Very minimal use of dialogue and the loudness of the film shift the narrative into unsettling tones while the audience is kept guessing what this boat is and what it has to do with the main character.

More particularly, the ending has been debated a lot in circles of fans due to the open-ended conclusions. The destiny of the sailor is left with hazy consequences and with such an ambiguous end, most interpretations vary from paranormal phenomena to psychic metaphors. This open-ended conclusion made this movie by Azzopardi a cult favorite among fans of thought-provoking, wordless, and tense thrillers.

How does The Boat end?

The ending of The Boat remains ambiguous, leaving the audience to wonder if the lone sailor did indeed ever return home. After surviving many harrowing moments on the haunted yacht, he finally eludes from danger only to find himself washed up on the same island where it all started. The movie ends with the sailor finding his boat attached to the land, hence there being some circularity in his experience.

Some postulate that the sailor was never free and was merely trapped in a deterministic cycle conjured by those mysterious forces aboard the yacht. Others suggest it as a symbolic ending, which reflects the psychology of the sailor, with the yacht playing a part only to symbolize his inner self. Even the name given to this boat, Aeolus, comes from the Greek mythological person who controlled the winds—adding to the supposition of supernatural elements at work.

The extreme atmosphere of the movie and the desperate struggle of the sailor to survive makes the ending of the film seem rather jarring. The film raises one to meditate on what kind of reality the sailor went through and the ominous presence that lurks around on the yacht.

What is The Boat about on Netflix?

The Boat takes off when a fisherman becomes lost in the heavy fog and stumbles across an abandoned yacht that he comes to think of as a sanctuary. Wading into it, he learns that, mysteriously, his boat is gone and that he is locked up in this floating palace.

In his wayward yacht, he experiences a lot of nightmarish scenarios, such as when he gets trapped in a bathroom filled with increasing amounts of water and when the yacht appears to be on autopilot, sailing into bad weather.

This film's tension is held together by sparse dialogue and claustrophobic settings that feel isolated and desperate. He falls into a circle of entrapment.

The ending, as mentioned, is open-ended which will keep the viewers in wonder about what exactly happened to him and to the malevolence of the yacht. This is a must-see for those who eagerly seek psychological thrillers.

Nikki Glaser to host 2025 Golden Globe Awards after Tom Brady roast praise

She’s feeling golden.

Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the 82nd annual Golden Globes in 2025, CBS said Wednesday. This comes off of Glaser’s career getting a new spotlight following her hit set on the Netflix roast of Tom Brady May 5.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front-row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage),” Glaser, 40, said in the network’s press release announcing the news.

“The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God, I hope so),” she continued. “It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”

Following Netflix’s Brady special, Glaser, who was part of the lineup of comedians who roasted the former quarterback, told Vanity Fair , “Tom Brady knows my name now. In his joke, he didn’t say it fully, but he said ‘Glaser.’ He said it right. I will never get this much attention until I die. I have an inkling of what it feels like to be Taylor Swift on a really slow day for her.”

At the time, Glaser, who has been a professional comedian for over 20 years, said, “I ascended in my career more than I ever have, overnight. It just doesn’t happen today with how oversaturated the content is — that all eyes are on something like this.”

Glaser quipped: “Outside of Will Smith slapping me, I don’t think I’ll get this much attention as a comedian in my life.”

Glaser also said in her statement about the Golden Globes that some of her favorite jokes have come from past hosts such as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler or Ricky Gervais.

They “have said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear. I just hope to continue in that time-honored tradition (that might also get me canceled),” she said.

“This is truly a dream job.”

She added, “Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty for every TV show and movie I’ve binged over the past year. It was all worth it. (“Below Deck: Sailing Yacht” Season 4 will be nominated, right?).”

Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes, said in a statement, “Nikki Glaser is a comedic powerhouse whose daring and unfiltered humor is the perfect match for the Golden Globes.”

She added, “She is sure to bring a unique energy and spontaneity to the show that will keep the audience entertained all night.”

The 2025 Golden Globes will air Sunday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m. on CBS.

What goes up must come down – and that’s no different when it comes to films and TV shows on Netflix .

Every month, while the streaming service adds a bursting list of titles to its library , it also removes a large amount – and, in the case of the UK, it does so without warning subscribers.

As a consequence, this means that things you’ve been meaning to get around to viewing after adding them to your watchlist may suddenly disappear.

Netflix Original titles are no longer safe from these removals, either – this month will see the culling of acclaimed 19th-century chiller The Alienist , German series Perfume and comedy special Tim Dillon: A Real Hero. While released in the US on TNT, The Alienist was made available to stream on Netflix in the UK.

Adam Sandler Hasn’t Changed. Have We?

Netflix’s love you , sandler’s first comedy special in years, does something unusual..

It needs to be said that, despite his current rehabilitation in the pop culture ferment, Adam Sandler has mostly starred in slop. I, like almost every other 33-year-old white guy on the planet, retain some fondness for the schlocky 88-minute comedies he produced in the late ’90s and early aughts: Billy Madison, The Waterboy, Big Daddy . But my affection for those films has much more to do with my wistfulness for a bygone, outrageously Y2K form of cable-TV osmosis that is impossible to replicate in the streaming age. It is 10 p.m. on a steaming summer night. You and your friends are a six-pack deep and crunched into an unventilated basement den. Someone flips on Spike TV. Happy Gilmore is on. Life has never been better.

This is the world in which Sandler became a superstar, and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I haven’t revisited much of his work since I left for college. The jokes weren’t great then, and they’ve only gotten worse since. Sandler put us all through a truly grotesque late prime; I think even his most ardent defenders would struggle to go to bat for Click , or Pixels, or the Boschian nightmare of Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2. ( Ten percent and 8 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.) The Sandler cinematic formula wore thin quickly. There were a lot of fart jokes. A lot of poop jokes. And a potentially lethal dose of Rob Schneider.

And yet, as Sandler enters his late 50s, all of his crimes have been miraculously washed away. He has flipped his fortunes, crossing over into bona fide Hollywood royalty status. Last year, he won the Mark Twain Prize . Soon he’ll be starring in a Noah Baumbach movie . And Love You, his first stand-up special in six years, debuted on Netflix this week and has yet to leave the platform’s top 10 most-watched programs—undoubtedly bolstered by strong endorsements from needle-movers like the New York Times . The comedy special is being framed as the next chapter in Sandler’s ongoing cultural coronation: more grist for the glow-up. Meanwhile, halfway through it, Sandler concludes a story about a genie who will only grant him three wishes if he gives a handjob to a man who just suffered explosive diarrhea in an airport bathroom. He hasn’t changed. Have we?

Sandler is adroit enough to drape Love You with the spoils of his newfound critical respect. The director here is Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie brothers, who cast Sandler as the degenerate gambler Howard Ratner in the 2019 freak-out hit Uncut Gems . Sandler was the perfect complement to the Safdies’ one-of-a-kind sensory delirium—a world where everyone is perpetually taking a phone call in a crowded nightclub—and Josh Safdie sprinkles a little bit of that chaos into the preamble of this special. Sandler pushes through fans and hangers-on in the crowded halls backstage, everyone looking warmed-over, with gaping pores, under the piercing fluorescent lights. The venue resembles a dilapidated high school theater: cloistered and visibly uncomfortable, always threatening to fall apart. And it does, frequently. In one surreal sequence, a dog gallops toward the front row from the bowels of the green room, interrupting Sandler’s joke before getting scooped up by a mindful PA. (Those mishaps were planned, but Sandler didn’t know the shape they’d take until they happened.) The results bring to mind some of the edgier, more auteur-ish comedians on the circuit: Conner O’Malley, Sarah Sherman, Maria Bamford , all of whom are unlikely to appear in a Grown Ups 3. 

But when it comes to the jokes, Sandler remains deep in his comfort zone. There is a bit about accidentally sending a dick pic to Al Pacino. He sings a song about his sister’s ugly new boyfriend. He blames the imaginary illiterate brother of “Merriam-Webster” for the spelling of words like “answer” and “enough.” There is an extended riff about how he applies Botox to his penis, thus removing its wrinkles, leading to a conundrum where the men in the YMCA bathroom believe Sandler is erect when he is, in fact, fully flaccid. It is not brainy material, but these stories are delivered amicably, in a stream-of-consciousness blabber, without a shred of grievance or any discernible political posture bleeding in from the margins. Sandler is unapologetic about the things he finds funny. That was true in 1995, and it’s still true in 2024.

And frankly, that might be what’s animating the ongoing Sandler renaissance. Nearly all his peers—particularly his ’90s-era Saturday Night Live compatriots—are heavily invested in what they perceive as a war for the soul of comedy. It has led to some exhausting, redundant seminars posing as stand-up specials. I never needed to hear Chris Rock say the word “woke,” but he still has dedicated swaths of his Netflix oeuvre to debating the ideology. Sandler should ostensibly fit the same mold: He’s a man in his late 50s who can credit much of his success to the lowbrow territory in which his filmography treads. And yet, if he feels under siege by sensitive snowflakes or whatever, Sandler scarcely shows it. Instead of fighting a culture war, he’s dedicated his craftsmanship to becoming astonishingly effective at telling the same dick, poop, and fart jokes he’s been telling for decades—trimming the fat, reforging their elements, until they land with something you could call grace. (It’s no wonder that these punchlines are at their most effective when they’re presented within the confines of a stripped-down stand-up set rather than a bloated ensemble film.) Sandler has checked out of the conversation that has made the consumption of contemporary comedy so litigious and annoying. There is a deftness in all this stupidity.

At the end of Love You, Sandler picks up a guitar and plays a song that functions like a “We Didn’t Start the Fire” for the people who have inspired him throughout his career. He daisy-chains together the names of comedy royalty—Lucille Ball, Sam Kinison, Lorne Michaels, Jim Downey—before eventually landing on the gut punch of the departed Norm Macdonald and Chris Farley. (Sandler performed a different tribute to Farley on a Saturday Night Live stint, which was another crucial component of his reclamation.) In the chorus, Sandler doesn’t sing about comedy’s ability to change the world, or expose grave injustices, or adjudicate political correctness once and for all. No, instead, Sandler asserts that comedy’s most profound social power is how it can make someone feel good, when they were previously feeling sad. It is a radically modest statement in a realm of performers who tend to take themselves a bit too seriously. Maybe we really have changed, after all.

What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle

• TERI (24A: Nava Mau's role in "Baby Reindeer") Baby Reindeer is a seven-episode miniseries that premiered on Netflix in April of this year. The show was created by Richard Gadd, who stars in Baby Reindeer as Donny Dunn, a character based on himself. Nava Mau portrays TERI, a therapist Donny met on a dating site.
• STAR TREK: VOYAGER (38A: Sci-fi series with Captain Kathryn Janeway) STAR TREK: VOYAGER originally aired from 1995-2001. The show focuses on the adventures of USS VOYAGER, captained by Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). USS VOYAGER was stranded in the Delta Quadrant on the far side of the galaxy, and is trying to make its way back to Alpha Quadrant. Although I was able to fill in STAR TREK fairly easily, I needed the help of crossing answers to vill in VOYAGER. My STAR TREK knowledge mostly dates back to 1970s reruns of STAR TREK: The Original Series (1966-1969)!
• AUDI (3D: Q8 automaker) AUDI launched the Q8, a mid-size luxury crossover SUV, in 2018. I'm not really up on car models, but fortunately, there aren't an abundance of four-letter automakers.
• EDIE (7D: Journalist Huggins) EDIE Huggins (1935-2008) was a TV reporter on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's WCAU-TV for 42 years. She was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2002.

Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

• ANDIE (17A: "Maid" actress MacDowell) Maid is a 10-episode miniseries released on Netflix in 2021. The show is inspired by a memoir by Stephanie Land, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive . The main character is Alex – portrayed by Margaret Qualley – a young mother with a two-year-old daughter, who gets a job as a maid. ANDIE MacDowell portrays Alex's mother, Paula Langley. In this interview with NPR , ANDIE MacDowell talks about drawing on her own childhood experiences to play her Maid character. Fun fact: ANDIE MacDowell and Margaret Qualley are mother and daughter in real life, as well as in the show.
• UCLA (34A: Bruins' college) The Bruins are the sports teams at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The team's mascots are Joe and Josie Bruin . In the 1950s, the UCLA Bruins used live bears as mascots. Fortunately, their current bear mascots are humans in costumes.
• Person 1: "Okay, you guys, we have to be careful. Someone here is possessed by an OWL."
• Person 2: "Who?"
• Person 1: "That's the thing, we don't know..." (Looks suspiciously at Person 2.)
• BEBOP (45A: Jazz style with complex harmonies) The BEBOP style of jazz developed in the 1940s. Unlike the earlier dance-oriented swing music-style of jazz, BEBOP was not intended for dancing. The freedom from this constraint meant musicians could play at faster tempos and include complex chord progressions. The term BEBOP is an onomatopoeic word (a word that imitates the sound it describes) derived from the nonsense syllables used in scat singing.
• LES (47A: Singer-songwriter Laura) In addition to her solo career, Laura LES is one half of the musical duo 100 gecs. Laura LES and Dylan Brady, known as 100 gecs, released their latest album – 10,000 gecs – in 2023. I have previously written about Laura LES .
• ELBA (48A: "Luther" actor Idris) Luther is a BBC TV series in which Idris ELBA stars as the title character, Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. The TV series originally aired from 2010-2019. Idris ELBA reprised the role for a 2023 movie that was a continuation of the series, Luther: The Fallen Sun .
• ENID (50A: Name hidden in "scre en id ol") This clue had me wondering if there is an ENID who is a "screen idol." There is a 2009 TV movie called ENID . It's a biographical film about children's author ENID Blyton. Helena Bonham Carter plays the title character.
• OSCAR THE GROUCH (52A: Muppet with a pet worm named Slimey) I am a fan of OSCAR THE GROUCH, the curmudgeonly Sesame Street character who lives in a trash can. OSCAR has an orange pet worm named Slimey . When Slimey originally appeared as a character (OSCAR said that he found him in the mud), he communicated only with squeaks, but in later episodes he was given a voice. In addition to Slimey, OSCAR THE GROUCH also has a number of pet elephants ! (Apparently OSCAR's trash can is bigger inside than it appears, somewhat like Mary Poppins' carpet bag.) Sometimes the elephants' trunks are visible sticking out of the trash can, but most often the elephants are heard but not seen. I couldn't resist taking a photo of my OSCAR THE GROUCH figurine checking out his name in the puzzle.
• NERO (61A: Fictional detective Wolfe) Cozy mysteries are my genre of choice, and I have an entire bookshelf dedicated to books about NERO Wolfe, so I was delighted to see this clue. NERO Wolfe, a creation of the author Rex Stout, is the ultimate armchair detective, rarely leaving his luxurious brownstone on West 35th Street in New York City where he reads books, tends his orchids, drinks beer, and eats gourmet meals. He relies on his assistant, Archie Goodwin, to do any necessary legwork, and to goad him into working when the bills need to be paid. Rex Stout (1886-1975) wrote 33 novels and 41 novellas and short stories about NERO Wolfe between 1934 and 1975. The NERO Wolfe stories have been adapted for TV, movies, and the stage. (I enjoy the quirkiness of NERO Wolfe, though I will say his attitudes toward women leave something to be desired.)
• EYRE (65A: Jane in a Bronte novel) Charlotte Brontë originally published Jane EYRE in 1847 under the pen name Currer Bell.
• CHAI (1D: Noon ___ (Kashmiri tea)) Noon CHAI is made with gunpowder tea (green tea leaves rolled into small pellets), milk, and baking soda. It is also called Kashmiri tea, as it originated in Kashmir (a region of the Indian subcontinent).
• LAND (2D: About 29% of Earth's surface) It seems like I most commonly see this statistic as 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. It was fun to see it turned around to 29% of Earth's surface is LAND.
• TERRE (9D: ___ Haute, Indiana) TERRE Haute, Indiana is located on the Wabash River near the Indiana-Illinois border. Indiana State University is located in TERRE Haute.
• SUSHI BOAT (10D: Vessel that may be filled with California rolls) A container shaped like a BOAT is a traditional and elegant way to serve SUSHI.
• AREA (11D: About 224,610 square miles, for Botswana) To help put this number in perspective, the AREA of Botswana is more than the AREA of California (163,695 square miles), and less than the AREA of Texas (268,596 square miles).
• TRACY (22D: Chapman who sang "Fast Car" at the 2024 Grammys) I wrote about TRACY Chapman and her song "Fast Car" six days ago .
• TESLA (39D: Inventor Nikola) Nikola TESLA (1856-1943) was an inventor and engineer known for his contributions to the design of modern electricity supply systems and alternating current (AC). One of Nikola TESLA's inventions was the TESLA coil, an electrical resonant transformer circuit. TESLA invented the coil in 1891. Although they've been used in a variety of applications, today the main use of TESLA coils are for entertainment and educational purposes.  Tesla coils can even be used to play music.
• PIRATE (46D: Seafarer who might say "Arrr!") PIRATE is making back-to-back appearances in the puzzle. Yesterday we saw PIRATE clued as [Make unauthorized copies of software].
• DONOR (51D: Universal ___ (person with O negative blood)) Since blood that is type O negative has no antigens (surface proteins found on red blood cells), it will not trigger an immune response following a blood transfusion, even if the recipient has a different blood type. Only 7% of the population are universal DONORs , that is, have type O negative blood. That means people with that blood type are in demand as blood DONORs. Hooray for science in the crossword!
