If you would like to go for a day sail with family or friends, or may even enter a regatta, but you do not own a boat? Then the Charter Fleet is for you. The Club owns a fleet of watercraft available for charter by members and their guests. We have a type and size of boat for every interest and experience level, so there is one just right for you! These boats are available for charter Thursday-Monday year-round for a half or full-day basis. To reserve a boat, simply email Clement Jardin at [email protected] . For your first sailboat charter, you will need to go for a one-hour check sail with Charter Manager, Clement Jardin, [email protected] or call the club at 281-471-1255. That was Mike Miles' response to a group of Houston-area state lawmakers who called for a financial audit of the charter school network founded by the Houston ISD superintendent. The nine elected Democrats, in a letter last week to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton , also asked for an investigation into HISD's $4.4 billion bond proposal . Miles did not mention the bond package or Colorado-based Third Future Schools in a subsequent letter addressed to the group of lawmakers, which one of them provided to Houston Public Media . Miles instead asked the elected officials to "put aside the politics of grievance and divisiveness for a moment and truly celebrate our students' success and the hard work of our teachers and school leaders." "Our kids need leaders," Miles added. "I hope we can work together to give them an example of what real leadership looks like." Many of the concerns expressed by Democratic lawmakers from Houston – two state senators and seven members of the Texas House of Representatives – stem from a May report by Spectrum News about Third Future Schools, where Miles served as CEO before leading Houston's school district. The cable TV news outlet claimed the charter network violated Texas law by sending millions in taxpayer money from its school in Odessa to a Colorado campus that needed financial assistance. The matter is under review by the Texas Education Agency, which last summer installed Miles and a state-appointed board of managers to lead HISD because Wheatley High School received a string of failing academic ratings from the agency. The group of local elected officials said they also want the state attorney general to investigate potential conflicts of interest within Third Future Schools' Texas operation and its compliance with state laws governing charter schools and nonprofits. "The integrity of our education system and the prudent use of taxpayer dollars are paramount," the Houston Democrats wrote in their letter . "Therefore, it is imperative that we address these issues decisively to maintain public trust and ensure the highest standards of accountability and transparency." In May, Miles defended the charter network he founded and refuted the Spectrum News report as "irresponsibly inaccurate." In his letter last week to the lawmakers, Miles defended the instructional reforms he has implemented in Houston while saying they are responsible for improvements in standardized test results. The changes as part of Miles' New Education System, which expanded from 85 schools last year to 130 this year, also have been met with community pushback and contributed to widespread staffing turnover. Miles characterized them in his letter as "necessary changes that were long avoided because it was politically safer to let students fail than to rock the boat." "It's time for all of us to lead, follow, or get out of the way," Miles also wrote. "Let's end the distracting public fighting and work together."
