Take a look at 22 Superyachts that have visited the UK in 2022
The number of Superyachts that visited the UK in 2022 is a record breaking figure. Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
The bodies of UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and four of his guests on the superyacht Bayesian have been recovered, three days after it sank off the coast of Sicily, according to Italian officials.
The officials said the bodies of Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance and Jonathan Bloomer , chair of insurance group Hiscox and Morgan Stanley International, alongside their wives, Neda Morvillo and Judy Bloomer, have been retrieved.
Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing, after Bayesian went down in an intense storm near Palermo on Monday.
The five bodies were pulled from the sunken yacht on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The body of Recaldo Thomas, the boat’s chef, had been retrieved earlier in the week.
The officials asked not to be named as they were not authorised to speak publicly.
No formal identification of the bodies has been announced by the local authorities. The Italian public prosecutor is charged with making the official determination of the deaths.
A representative for the Morvillo family spoke of their “tremendous loss”.
“We are completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda, and our collective hearts go out to all the families who have also been affected by this senseless tragedy,” they said.
A Bloomer family spokesperson described their “unimaginable grief”.
“Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family,” they said. “Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.”
A spokesperson for the Lynch family declined to comment.
David Tabizel, who co-founded Autonomy with Lynch, paid tribute to his “exhausting, exhilarating and incisive” friend, describing him as a “witty, loyal polymath with a mind like a razor blade”.
Brent Hoberman, the investor and entrepreneur who co-founded Lastminute.com and Founders Forum, said Lynch was a “pioneering titan of UK technology”. “He was an outlier and an original thinker,” he said.
Lord John Browne, former chief executive of BP, said Lynch “should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK”.
Suranga Chandratillake, former US chief technology officer at Autonomy and now investor at Balderton Capital, called Lynch’s death an “incalculable loss to UK tech”, as well as a “hugely inspirational friend who would always have time to help you find a solution [with] a sense of humour [and] a cup of builder’s tea”.
The trip on Bayesian had been planned as a celebration of Lynch’s recent acquittal on US fraud charges, after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his software group Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.
Morvillo represented Lynch in his recent US case, and Bloomer appeared at the trial as a witness for the defence.
Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of 15 survivors rescued in the early hours of Monday morning.
Italian and UK authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the shipwreck after some eyewitnesses claimed the yacht sank in just a matter of minutes.
Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of Italian Sea Group, which owns Bayesian’s manufacturers Perini Navi, told the Financial Times that the 56-metre, British-registered yacht was “absolutely safe”. ISG’s tracking data shows it took 16 minutes from the time Bayesian started dragging its anchor until it sank.
A team of divers has struggled for days to access the interior cabins of the 540-tonne yacht, due to the volume of debris inside a wreck that lies 50 metres below the surface.

UK superyacht industry: ranked 3rd in the world and still growing
British marine ceo lesley robinson talks us through the state of the industry and what lies ahead….
Lesley Robinson is the CEO of British Marine, the trade association for the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry. Superyacht UK is an association within British Marine and represents nearly 300 business across the UK superyacht sector.
The UK’s superyacht industry has many reasons to be confident. As an industry we recently celebrated our sixth consecutive year of growth, and a recent report from Superyacht UK indicated two thirds of businesses trading in the sector are optimistic for the future. It’s encouraging to see international demand is largely stable despite the uncertainty surrounding the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. This is partly due to the weaker pound, with turnover growing £697m in 2017/18 and contributing £520m in GVA to the UK’s GDP. Indeed, the UK has a proud heritage as a leader in superyacht design and manufacturing, it’s no surprise we are currently ranked third in the world for deliveries.
That said, Brexit represents significant uncertainty for the industry. Supply chains and trading relations are being affected by the lack of clarity around the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. And whilst the global market for superyacht business remains steady, European partners are hesitant to take on additional risks by working with businesses based in the UK. Consequently, it’s important that we seek to maintain a strong domestic market as well as exploring opportunities further afield.
"It’s crucial we recognise the role our industry must play in tackling issues around the environment head on"
While we seek to nurture tomorrow’s talent through next week’s Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition, held during The Superyacht Design Forum in London from 25-26 June, it’s also vital that we look after the environment that future generations will inherit. It’s crucial we recognise the role our industry must play in tackling issues around the environment head on, as more and more superyacht owners are seeking to improve the impact their yachts have on our world.
Undoubtedly good progress has been made on this front. We’re seeing motor yachts with improved fuel-efficiency and electric drive, and solar-panelled sailing yachts with no hydrocarbons on board. Spirit Yachts’ flagship ‘eco yacht’, the Spirit 111, has a motor that will propel the yacht silently for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. But real improvements will only be achieved if marine companies challenge each other to progress and enhance their eco-credentials. As the leading trade association for the UK’s superyacht and boating manufacturers, we’re proud to be industry facilitators; helping our members become more environmentally friendly and facilitating ways for them to reduce their carbon footprint.
As we look ahead, the future does look bright: demand for the UK’s elite manufacturers and designers is consistently on the rise, but we need to tackle issues like sustainability head on as a collective industry to leave the next generation of mariners with an undamaged environment to enjoy.
For a further insight into the sessions we have scheduled for The Superyacht Design Forum , 25 to 26 June, Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, please see the full programme here . Remaining tickets are available here .

Mike Lynch confirmed dead after yacht sank off Sicily coast during storm
Tech tycoon, 59, was among six people missing since early hours of Monday morning when Bayesian yacht capsized
The British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been confirmed dead by search and rescue authorities after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, according to officials.
Lynch, 59, the founder of Autonomy Corporation , was among six people missing after the British-flagged 56-metre sailing boat Bayesian capsized at about 5am local time on Monday off the coast of Palermo when the area was hit by a tornado.
Lynch’s body was retrieved from the wreck on Thursday, Massimo Mariani, an interior ministry official, told Reuters after being briefed by the emergency services. Agence France-Presse also reported that Lynch’s body had been recovered, citing a coastguard official.
His wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued on Monday, while his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, is still unaccounted for. Mariani said her body may be inside the wreck or she could have been tossed into the sea as the boat sank.
A spokesperson for the Italian fire brigade said it could take days before the last missing person was found, given the difficulties facing the divers on a wreck 50m (165ft) below the surface.
The bodies of four people were recovered from the wreck on Wednesday. The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, shortly after the vessel sank.
Lynch, once described as Britain’s Bill Gates, spent much of the last decade in court defending his name against allegations of fraud related to the sale of Autonomy to the US tech company Hewlett-Packard for $11bn (£7bn).
He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June after he had spent more than a year living in effect under house arrest. The boat trip was a celebration of being cleared of the charges.
Lord Browne, the chair of the Francis Crick Institute, was among the first to pay tribute to Lynch. In a post on X , he wrote: “Mike Lynch should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK.
“His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally. I send my condolences to those close to him. We have lost a human being of great ability.”
Lynch was a member of the Create the Change fundraising board, set up by Cancer Research UK and which helped fund the building of the institute.
He was also a director of the BBC for five years.
David Tabizel, Lynch’s co-founder at Autonomy, posted on X : “It looks like we’ve lost our dear Dr Mike Lynch. RIP. The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man.” Speaking to BBC News, he described Lynch as a “human supercomputer”.
The Royal Academy of Engineering, where Lynch was a fellow, said in a statement that it was deeply saddened by his death: “Mike became a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and we have fond memories of the active role he played in the past, as a mentor, donor and former council member. He was also one of the inaugural members on the enterprise committee. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
Tim Davie, BBC director general, paid tribute to Lynch on Thursday. He said: “We are deeply saddened by the awful news about the deaths of those aboard the Bayesian yacht. Mike Lynch was an outstanding BBC director, who made a major contribution during his time on the board, from 2007 to 2012.
“Wise, generous and insightful, he played a particularly key role in accelerating our transformation as a digital organisation. Our thoughts are with his family and all others involved.”
Earlier on Thursday, a senior official confirmed to the Guardian that divers had recovered a fifth body from the wreck. The head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said the body had been successfully recovered and transported to Porticello’s pier.
Italian media, quoting sources among the divers, said the victims retrieved on Wednesday were Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, as well as the executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife, Judy. The Bloomers’ family described them as “incredible people and an inspiration to many”.
Questions remain about why the yacht sank within minutes. The head of the company that built the boat yesterday hit back at suggestions that the length of its mast was a risk factor.
Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company, insisted the boat was safe. He said a series of human errors had contributed to the tragedy. In an interview with Italy’s Corriere della Sera, Costantino cited hatches being left open and the keel not being fully lowered.
The bodies recovered on Wednesday were taken to hospitals in the nearby city of Palermo. They have not been officially identified.
There were 22 people onboard when the yacht sank. Fifteen survived, including a one-year-old girl.

Three Superyachts Visit the Dart.
This morning Dartmouth welcomed the 98m long superyacht ‘Aviva’ to our mainstream mooring buoys in the middle of the town. She joined the 66m long yacht ‘Elysian’ and regular visitor ‘Constance’, which is 47m long, to make a spectacular line up on the Dart.
Whilst superyacht calls are becoming more regular, with many yachts calling to pick up new tenders and support boats from local manufacturers Ribeye, as well as to allow their owners, crew and guest to enjoy the beauty of South Devon, this is the first time we have ever had three yachts of this size on the river. Our mainstream moorings, originally designed by the Admiralty for mooring warships, are extremely flexible and able to be configured to accommodate vessels from small yachts to cruise ships.
Aviva has a hybrid propulsion system, and arrived in port this morning entirely on battery propulsion. Arriving from Troon in Scotland, she entered the river under the guidance of our Pilot, turned at the Higher Ferry and launched a tender from the garage at the stern, before being moored by the harbour team.
Weather and circumstances depending, we expect all three yachts to remain in port until at least Thursday, giving plenty of opportunity for local people to see the boats on the river.

Superyacht sinks latest: Tech tycoon Mike Lynch's body among five identified; 'unlikely' missing daughter thrown from boat
Five bodies have been found and now identified in the search for those missing after a yacht sank off the Sicily coast, including that of tech tycoon Mike Lynch. An expert says it is unlikely his daughter, who remains unaccounted for, is not inside the vessel.

We're pausing our coverage for tonight but here is a recap of what we know:
- The five bodies discovered in the wreckage of the sunken Bayesian have been identified;
- British tycoon Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were all named;
- Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch remains unaccounted for;
- A senior oceanography lecturer has told Sky News it's "unlikely" she was thrown from the Bayesian and more probable that she will be found somewhere inside the vessel;
- Tributes have flooded in for the deceased, including from the families of the Bloomers and the Morvillos;
- The chief executive of a firm which makes and sells yachts like the Bayesian believes the sinking may have been due to a series of human mistakes and questioned why its crew were not in a "state of alert" when a storm hit;
- An Italian fire service spokesman says emergency workers "would need a crystal ball" to know if and when another body will be discovered;
- Mr Lynch had reportedly considered selling the Bayesian earlier this year but changed his mind when acquitted in a major fraud trial in the US.
As tributes are made to those who lost their lives aboard the Bayesian, investigations are getting under way into what caused the disaster.
A criminal investigation was opened in Italy after the tragedy, despite the fact no suspects have been identified publicly.
The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch is also investigating, though it is purely fact-finding.
Watch Sky News correspondent Laura Bundock explain the situation here...
Mike Lynch was one of the "most inspirational citizens" of Suffolk, says the Countess of Euston.
Clare, Countess of Euston, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk, says Mr Lynch was "quite simply a genius" who was "exemplary" in his position as a deputy lieutenant of Suffolk.
She said: "I join with so many others in mourning the shocking loss of Mike Lynch and all those who tragically lost their lives in Sicily this week. Mike was one of Suffolk's most inspirational citizens.
"He was quite simply a genius, a global leader in his field but so much more than that.
"A kind and compassionate man who was always ready to help, hugely generous, the best of friends, but it will be his warm and wonderful smile that will be impossible for me to forget.
"Mike was an exemplary Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk serving both our late Queen Elizabeth II and our present King Charles III.
"Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences are with Angela and his whole family at this terrible time."
The search for the final person unaccounted for from the Bayesian's sinking entered its fourth day today.
Divers were quickly able to retrieve one body from the shipwreck that they had already discovered yesterday, but searches remain ongoing for the final passenger, believed to be 18-year-old Hannah Lynch.
Below, we have a look at some images from the operation today as it unfolded:
Clifford Chance has paid tribute to its partner, Chris Morvillo, after he was confirmed to have died when the Bayesian yacht capsized and sank.
Mr Morvillo spent almost a decade helping to lead the defence of Mike Lynch after the British tech tycoon was accused of falsely inflating revenues of his software company ahead of its multi-billion sale to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
The 59-year-old was on the yacht with his wife, Neda, who is also among those to have died.
A spokesperson from Clifford Chance said: "We are heartbroken at the tragic passing of our partner, Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda.
"We are deeply saddened and still coming to terms with this terrible loss. Our utmost priority is to continue to support Chris's family at this very distressing time. Our thoughts extend to the families and loved ones of all those affected.
"We wish to express our deepest condolences and our love and support to Chris’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We also want to thank the Italian authorities and rescue teams for everything they have done.
"We have no further comment at this time. We, and the families, ask that their request for privacy is honoured during this period."
A little earlier we reported comments from the boss of the firm which makes and sells vessels like Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht (see 18.25 post).
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that makes the Perini vessels, questioned why its crew were not in a "state of alert" when a storm hit.
He insisted the vessels were "absolutely safe", suggesting human error was behind the boat going down.
Watch video of the Sky News interview below:
More tributes are being made to British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, after he was identified as one of the bodies found in the superyacht wreckage.
Suranga Chandratillake, who worked under Mr Lynch for five years and had him on the board of directors at his firm Balderton for nearly a decade, said the businessman was an "inspirational titan of industry".
He said Mr Lynch was an "unfailingly supportive mentor who challenged and supported in equal measure" and who also "mastered hybrid work" well before COVID.
"He was famously fiercely competitive but, to his friends, equally fiercely loyal and always ready for a cup of tea and a chat."
Patrick Jacob , a family friend of Mr Lynch, said the late tycoon's ability to "identify and solve complex problems" was "phenomenal".
"As a friend, Mike was never dull and always ready for a lively debate on almost any topic, conducted with intelligence and convivial vigour."
He added that he never came away from seeing Mr Lynch "without feeling my life was enriched by the experience".
Martina King , the CEO of Featurespace, a platform for fraud and financial crime management, said there qs a "high statistical probability" that the company wouldn't be a "thriving technology company" without Mr Lynch.
She said: "Mike was a true champion of the UK technology sector, including the need for greater diversity, and advocated for many female leaders - including me."
The head of legal tech firm Luminance, Eleanor Lightbody ,said Mr Lynch was a "visionary unlike any other" who had the ability to spot solve "tomorrow's challenges before others even knew they were coming".
"I feel honoured to have known him, worked with him and learnt from him over the years," she added.
The boss of the firm which makes and sells vessels like Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht has questioned why its crew were not in a "state of alert" when a storm hit.
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that makes the Perini vessels, said they "are absolutely safe", suggesting human error was behind the boat going down.
He told Sky News the "event" that capsized the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday "could have been managed with an average amount of attention".
The families of US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, have released a statement after the couple were confirmed to have died when the yacht capsized and sank.
The statement reads: "We are completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda, and our collective hearts go out to all the families who have also been affected by this senseless tragedy.
"Chris and Neda were each widely respected for their professional successes, Chris as a distinguished attorney and Neda as a skilled jewellery designer, but their true talents were that of mother and father, son and daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt and dear friends to so many.
"Neda and Chris lived their lives as devoted, loving parents who always put their daughters and families first. Their passing is a tremendous loss for our family and for the countless people who knew and loved them both.
"We extend our deepest gratitude to the Italian rescue services for their unwavering dedication and to Clifford Chance for all the support they have provided.
"As we grieve this enormous loss, our primary focus remains on Chris and Neda's daughters and other loved ones, and we respectfully request privacy."
Mike Lynch knew he would likely spend the rest of his life in federal prison if he lost his US fraud trial, says a journalist who covered the case.
The British tech tycoon, who today was confirmed to be one of the casualties of Monday's superyacht sinking in Sicily, was cleared of fraud charges he faced over the $11bn (£8.6bn) sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
Mr Lynch had been accused of inflating the value of Autonomy ahead of its sale but was found not guilty on all counts by a jury in San Francisco.
He faced more than 20 years in prison if convicted, with Sunday Times journalist Danny Fortson, who interviewed Mr Lynch last month, telling Sky News that the businessman framed his potential conviction as a "near-death experience".
He said: "I was with him for about two and a half hours after covering the 12-week trial throughout, and he was really just kind of reeling in a good way, trying to process the fact that he actually had got this new lease on life.
"He really framed it all as almost having this kind of near-death experience of knowing that he was probably going to lose this case, and if he lost it, he would probably spend the rest of his life in a federal prison far away from his family and his loved ones.
"And then to win this case and then 73 days later, after having, as you say in his words, getting a second life, to have it end so tragically, it's hard to believe."

Divers search Sicily yacht wreck with UK tech boss among missing

Divers and an underwater drone searched Tuesday for six people, including a British tech tycoon and international banker, believed trapped when a luxury yacht sank off Sicily.
The 56-metre (185 feet) yacht "Bayesian" was anchored with 10 crew and 12 passengers on board when it was struck by a waterspout mini-tornado, before dawn on Monday.
Fifteen people, including a woman and her one-year-old baby, were rescued. The body of one man -- reported to be the yacht's chef -- was found.
Among the six missing were UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy.
The passengers were guests of Lynch -- sometimes referred to as Britain's Bill Gates -- to celebrate his acquittal in a massive US fraud case.
While Italy's coastguard said the search continued without a break, Captain Vincenzo Zagarola said it was "difficult to imagine" it would end well.
Experts and officials have described the sinking as an "extroardinary" event.
The search was made difficult by the British-flagged yacht lying largely intact on the seabed some 50 metres down.
Divers take one minute to get down and another minute to get back. They are restricted to 12 minutes for each dive because of the water pressure, according to fire service spokesman Luca Cari.
Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was among those rescued, according to Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily's Civil Protection Agency.
As well as Bloomer, who testified for Lynch in the US case, the missing included Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda, according to law firm Clifford Chance.
Lynch, 59, was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.
It emerged Tuesday that a co-defendant, former Autonomy executive Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car on Saturday in England.
- 'Tight spaces' -
Divers trained to work in tight spaces were flown in from Rome and Sardinia late Monday.
A first, nighttime search of the wreck failed, with firefighters saying early Tuesday that furniture was blocking their way.
Marco Tilotta, from the Palermo fire service divers' unit, told AFP search efforts were concentrated on getting inside the sleeping and living areas of the yacht.
"The spaces inside the boat are very tight and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes," said Cari, from the fire service.
The vessel was moored off Porticello, east of Palermo, when violent winds and rains suddenly swept up the coast.
"It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind, and shortly after it went down," survivor Charlotte Golunski told ANSA news agency.
Golunski, board director at Luminance, a company founded by Lynch, lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the waves "for two seconds", before grabbing her again.
"Lots of people were screaming" in the dark, said Golunski, who scrambled onto a life raft.
- Mast 'snapped' -
Reportedly owned by Lynch's family, "Bayesian" was built by Italian shipbuilding firm Perini Navi in 2008. Its 75-metre mast was the world's tallest aluminium sailing mast, according to the Charter World website.
A photograph posted on social media by the Baia Santa Nicolicchia bar in Porticello showed the yacht lit up, its towering mast shining in the darkness, just a few hours before the storm hit.
A waterspout is a column that descends from a cloud to form a rotating mixture of wind and water, often during severe thunderstorms.
Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP it was an "extraordinary event".
"This is a large, luxurious superyacht that has founded quite quickly in a touristy, well-known sailing area off Sicily. It's pretty unprecedented."
Karsten Borner, captain of a yacht anchored nearby at the time of the storm, said there was a "very strong hurricane gust" and he battled to keep his vessel steady.
Borner saw the yacht's mast "bend and then snap", according to Italy's Corriere della Sera daily.
Italian authorities have opened a probe, while the UK's marine accident investigation branch sent four inspectors to Palermo.
