Superyachts run by the Four Seasons brand are creating a buzzy new offering. Competitors include Marriott's Ritz-Carlton and Accor's Orient Express.

Four Seasons revealed on Tuesday the first itineraries for its new brand, Four Seasons Yachts. The hospitality company also shared the first renderings of its maiden vessel, which it has yet to name.

Here are five facts that stood out.

1. Four Seasons’ first yacht will take turns sailing the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

When the Four Seasons Yachts brand begins service in January 2026, its first vessel will cruise to the Caribbean for weeklong trips among the islands of St. Barths, Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao, and Aruba.

In March 2026, the yacht will cross the Atlantic and begin trips that stop at ports in Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. Several itineraries will feature stops in Greece, including Athens, Ios, Santorini, and Milos.

2. Four Seasons Yachts will favor ports only private vessels tend to visit.

Four Seasons Yachts is a brand that belongs to a new generation of cruise ship offerings known as superyachts. These commercial vessels are bigger than a private yacht but smaller than a cruise ship.

An advantage of superyachts compared to typical cruise ships is that they can visit ports of call ordinarily only with the infrastructure to support small private vessels.

This agility will let the first Four Season Yacht visit more than 130 spots in over 30 countries and territories in its first year alone. A sample stop could let guests easily explore Martinique’s volcanic coral reefs and lush rainforest landscapes in a way they couldn’t if sailing on a traditional large luxury liner.

Other brands in the category include the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which already has ships at sea, and Orient Express Silenseas, which intends to debut in 2026.

3. The superyachts intend to take design to a higher level than the standard luxury cruise liner.

The 14-deck luxury vessel is inspired by Aristotle Onassis’ iconic yacht Christina O, according to Four Seasons and its partner Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings and shipbuilder Fincantieri.

The ship will have 95 guest suites created by the brand’s creative director, Prosper Assouline, along with Tillberg Design of Sweden .

4. Suites on a Four Seasons yacht will emphasize space.

The first vessel from Four Seasons Yachts promises to have “50% more living space per guest” than what’s available on the Ilma , the first ship to debut from rival player Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection .

Suites will offer floor-to-ceiling windows, double vanity bathrooms, and large private balconies, as just-shared images reveal.

The largest suites range from 2,981 to 9,975 square feet of indoor and outdoor living space.

5. Amenities will include a 66-foot saltwater pool and a marina deck.

FOUR SEASONS YACHTS ITINERARIES

In its debut year, Four Seasons Yachts will explore more than 130 distinct destinations across over 30 countries and territories. All itineraries are crafted with flexibility in mind, allowing guests to tailor their own adventure as they explore beyond the familiar. The team curating each itinerary understands the nuances of these locales, ensuring each experience is truly extraordinary. Enhancing itineraries are customizable with pre-and-post hotel and overland programs at beloved Four Seasons hotels and resorts.

The first Four Seasons Yacht, currently under construction in Ancona, Italy, will travel westbound as part of its repositioning and will welcome guests to set sail amid the serene turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea from January to March 2026. The first Caribbean itineraries feature seven nights of exploration through the most exciting yachting destinations including Saint Barthélemy (St Barths), Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao and Aruba. Destination highlights include indulging in the dazzling nightlife of St Barths, discovering Martinique’s volcanic coral reefs and lush rainforest landscapes, a marina day in St Lucia’s Tobago Cays, and much more.

With more destinations and details to be unveiled in the coming months, the first Grand Mediterranean voyages will begin in March 2026 and will include sailings through Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye. The Mediterranean itinerary will also highlight the Greek Isles, with stops in Athens, Ios, Santorini, Milos, and more. Guests will explore under-the-radar islands steeped in culture and history, offering a variety of experiences that go above and beyond the ordinary of Mediterranean sailings.

FOUR SEASONS YACHTS

FOUR SEASONS YACHTS DESIGN

In collaboration with Tillberg Design of Sweden and the Yacht’s Creative Director, Prosper Assouline, the Yacht’s suite design embodies the essence of intuitive luxury, each a sanctuary of tranquillity with panoramic views, elegant interiors, thoughtful details and a residential feel that creates the sense of a welcoming home at sea.

“Our goal was to craft an environment that feels both familiar and extraordinary, with warm hues and open designs. We are creating an inviting, welcoming environment that reflects the same feeling one experiences at a Four Seasons hotel or resort,” says Fredrik Johannson, Partner and Executive Director of Tillberg Design of Sweden. “At the same time, we are designing a look and feel that is unique to this project, creating an elegant yet simple interior that stands out on its own, while blending beautifully with the majestic seas that will surround it.”

With 50% more living space per guest than currently available with any competitor at sea, all suites will offer floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing sweeping sea views, double vanity bathrooms with spacious showers and closets, expansive private terraces, and dynamic use of space and light.

The Yacht’s extensive network of adjoining suites will feature an innovative system that connects accommodations with modular walls, offering numerous options of vertical and horizontal combinations within the signature suites. This versatility will unlock more than 100 different connection options and the unique opportunity to reserve an entire side of a deck, perfect for those travelling with family, friends, or larger groups. For example, this one-of-a-kind design will allow for more than 13,000 square feet (1,200 square metres) of total living space.

FOUR SEASONS YACHTS

FOUR SEASONS YACHTS: FUNNEL & LOFT SUITES

The largest accommodations are seven signature suites ranging from 2,981 to 9,975 square feet (277 to 927 square metres) of indoor and outdoor living space. They offer two to three bedrooms, separate living rooms, indoor and outdoor dining space, splash pools, outdoor showers, and the option to connect to additional suites.

The premier signature suite accommodations – the Funnel and Loft Suites – both feature three bedrooms, outdoor showers, and splash pools. The largest on board, the Funnel Suite, housed within the Yacht’s glass-enclosed funnel, is 9,975 square feet (927 square metres), spanning four levels of living space. The suite’s towering floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows, made up of the largest contiguous piece of glass at sea, is a one-of-a-kind engineering feat offering stunning 280-degree panoramic views. The Loft Suite is 7,952 square feet (739 square metres) and can accommodate large group sizes of up to 20 people by connecting with seven additional suites, the largest number of connecting suites available.

When exploring beyond the comforts of their stunning suites, guests can enjoy 11 dining options, spa and wellness offerings, a state-of-the-art transverse marina, and the stern pool, set to be one of the largest in the industry at nearly 19 metres long and 5 metres wide (65 feet long and 18 feet wide). Its unique hydraulic lift design will allow the pool deck to level out, creating an expansive outdoor space for weddings, celebrations and other events.

T&C First Look: The Four Seasons Yacht

It sets sail in 2025. There is already a waitlist.

four seasons yacht

Last year at the Monaco Yacht Show, Four Seasons announced it was getting into the game. In partnership with luxury yachting company Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd. and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, it's building a 679-foot vessel that will have 95 suites (each equipped with a terrace), one of the largest pools at sea, custom sea limousines for coastal tours, and 11 food and beverage options. A second yacht is also in the works.

The boat's real pièce de résistance is the Funnel Suite, a 4-level, 9,500-square-foot penthouse on the water with a 5,000-square-foot terrace, a private spa and pool, and 280-degree views afforded by one giant slab of curved glass that cost $4.5 million.

When she sets sail on her maiden voyage in late 2025, the Four Seasons Yacht will do as any seafaring tycoon does and cruise the Caribbean in the winters and the Mediterranean in the summers. The brand also has the advantage of a sprawling network of hotels—126 properties in 47 countries—sprinkled throughout glitzy ports of call like the French Riviera, Taormina, Athens, and Anguilla.

As for how to book? Due to high demand, priority reservation access for the inaugural voyage will be given to loyal Four Seasons clients and travel partners. If that's you, expect an invitation in the mail. For everyone else, best of luck with that waitlist .

Review of Four Seasons Yachts

Four Seasons Yachts is a new cruise line and travel brand owned by Four Seasons Hotels Ltd via its subsidiary Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd (Malta-incorporated, Miami-based).

Debuting in 2026-Q1 (postponed from 2025-Q4), the ultra-luxury travel brand Four Seasons Yachts ( official website ) brings the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts' legendary attentive and personalized service to the high seas. Currently, the brand plans to commence cruise revenue operations in November 2025.

Four Seasons cruise fleet consists of three identical-design newbuild superyachts (1x under construction , 1x ordered, 1x optional) representing a total investment of EUR 1,2 billion (400M per unit).

The first ship ( Four Seasons I ) was initially scheduled for completion/delivery and inauguration in November 2025, but postponed for January 2026. The second ship (Four Seasons II) was ordered in June 2023 and is planned for inauguration in December 2026. The third unit currently remains optional (by the shipbuilding contract).

Four Seasons' shipbuilder is Fincantieri ( Trieste yard for prefabrication, Ancona yard for assembly) and all vessels are Malta- flagged and registered in Valletta . The shipbuilding contract with Fincantieri was signed on July 11, 2022.

Curiously, Four Seasons' cruise shipping business started in 2003 with their ever-first vessel Four Seasons Explorer (2002-built as ISLAND EXPLORER). This catamaran-type superyacht has volume 592 GT-tons, LOA length 39 m, max passenger capacity 25.

FS Explorer (advertised as "Cruising Resort" and "Floating Resort") is currently Maldives-flagged (MMSI 511000820) and registered in the Male/Kaafu Atoll . The catamaran is now deployed in Palau (Oceania/Micronesia) and offers year-round voyages leaving roundtrip from homeport Koror . Until 2023, FS Explorer was deployed in the Maldives and operated year-round sailings in the Baa Atoll .

Itinerary of Four Seasons Yachts

Bookings for select Four Seasons cruises and itinerary information (departure dates, homeports, call ports/regions, destinations) were initially expected sometime in 2023-H2. However, details on the company's inaugural season (2026) were announced in late March 2024.

On March 26, 2024, the company announced its first 10 cruises scheduled for its first ship ( Four Seasons I ) slated for 2026-Q1. The program is based on destinations in Europe/Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

In 2026-Q1 (January-February-March), the Four Seasons I ship will visit 130+ different destinations (ports and islands) in 30+ countries. Following the inaugural Mediterranean season, the ship will be redeployed (RepositionCruises.com) from Europe to the Caribbean (westbound Transatlantic crossing) operating in the Southern Caribbean.

The European itineraries visit destinations in Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Iberia (Portugal and Spain), and the Eastern Med/Aegean Sea - Turkey and Greece (Greek Islands and Piraeus-Athens).

The inaugural cruise season (January-March 2026) groups 130 different ports/destinations in 30+ countries/territories in the Caribbean. Most itineraries are 7-night and visit destinations like Saint Bartholemy (Gustavia), the Grenadines (Mayreau, Bequia), Nevis (Charlestown), St Lucia (Marigot Bay, Rodney Bay, Soufriere Bay, Tobago Cays), Barbados (Bridgetown, Speightstown), Dominica, Martinique (Le Marin, Pointe du Bout, Fort-de-France), Antigua (Falmouth), Guadeloupe (Isles des Saintes), Sint Maarten (Philipsburg), BVI (Peter Island), Aruba (Oranjestad), Curacao (Willemstad).

Four Seasons Yachts' first voyages in Europe are scheduled for March 2026. The Mediterranean itineraries visit Gibraltar and ports in the Adriatic (Italy, Croatia, Montenegro), Western Med (Portugal, Spain) and Aegean (Greece, Turkey). Greek Isles itineraries visit Piraeus-Athens, and popular for tourism islands like Santorini, Milos, Paros, Ios, Mykonos, Hydra.

All Four Seasons cruises can be customized to cruisetours inclusive of shore excursions and land-based programs. This way, optionally, the sailings can be extended with land stays (pre- and post-cruise packages) at Four Seasons properties (hotels and resorts).

This Highly Anticipated Luxury Cruise Line Just Revealed Its Inaugural Itineraries — Plus a Peek Inside Its 95 Luxe Suites

In 2026, Four Seasons Yachts will sail to more than 130 destinations.

four seasons yacht name

Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd, Joint Owner/Operator Four Seasons Yachts

As we're just two short years from the debut of Four Seasons Yachts , it's time to take a look at where the first ship in the fleet will be sailing — and it's a dazzling collection of more than 130 destinations throughout the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

From January to March 2026, the first Four Seasons Yacht will sail the Caribbean, visiting such islands as St. Barts, Nevis, the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao and Aruba. Afterward, it'll make the transatlantic journey to the Mediterranean, traveling through the Greek Isles, the Italian Riviera, and the Adriatic, among other destinations. Each itinerary in both regions can be combined with overland extensions at Four Seasons hotels.

But Four Seasons Yachts hasn't only announced its inaugural itineraries; it's provided a sneak peek inside the first ship's 95 suites, too. Interiors are a collaboration between Tillberg Design of Sweden and Four Seasons Yachts creative director Prosper Assouline.

"Our goal was to craft an environment that feels both familiar and extraordinary, with warm hues and open designs. We are creating an inviting, welcoming environment that reflects the same feeling one experiences at a Four Seasons hotel or resort," Fredrik Johannson, partner and executive director of Tillberg Design of Sweden, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure .  “At the same time, we are designing a look and feel that is unique to this project, creating an elegant yet simple interior that stands out on its own, while blending beautifully with the majestic seas that will surround it.”

The suites are enormous, offering 50 percent more living space than any other ship at sea. They'll each feature floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces to give guests sweeping sea and landscape views, wherever they are in the world.

Perhaps most uniquely, the adjoining suites on the ship have modular walls that allow for more than 100 connection options, creating versatile living arrangements for guests' needs. For example, you could combine the entire side of a deck to create a 13,000-square-foot palatial accommodation at sea.

“We are excited to showcase the breathtaking destinations and world-class design awaiting guests aboard Four Seasons Yachts as we approach our inaugural season in 2026,” Alejandro Reynal, Four Seasons president and CEO, said in a statement provided to T+L. “At Four Seasons, guest-centricity has always been the foundation of our luxury service offering and our exceptional Yacht will extend this approach to the seas."

Rates start at $19,900 per suite for a seven-night sailing; bookings are not yet open, but you can register your interest at fourseasonsyachts.com .

As momentum builds towards the inaugural season of Four Seasons Yachts , the first 10 unique voyages are unveiled, each inviting travellers to make the iconic islands and hidden gems of the Caribbean and Mediterranean their playground, with meticulously designed suites that guests will call home along the journey.

“We are excited to showcase the breathtaking destinations and world-class design awaiting guests aboard Four Seasons Yachts as we approach our inaugural season in 2026,” says Alejandro Reynal , President and Chief Executive Officer, Four Seasons. “At Four Seasons, guest-centricity has always been the foundation of our luxury service offering and our exceptional Yacht will extend this approach to the seas. Our teams are dedicated to innovating and delivering genuine service, ensuring each journey is defined by comfort, elegance, and personalization, setting a new standard for luxury hospitality experiences at sea.”

A Journey Across Crystal Clear Caribbean Waters   and Magnificent Mediterranean Seas

The Mediterranean itinerary will also highlight the Greek Isles , with stops in Athens, Ios, Santorini, Milos, and more. Guests will explore under-the-radar islands steeped in culture and history, offering a variety of experiences that go above and beyond the ordinary of Mediterranean sailings.

Bespoke Suite Designs Focused on Comfort, Connection and Care

In collaboration with Tillberg Design of Sweden and the Yacht’s Creative Director, Prosper Assouline, the Yacht’s suite design embodies the essence of intuitive luxury, each a sanctuary of tranquillity with panoramic views, elegant interiors, thoughtful details and a residential feel that creates the sense of a welcoming home at sea.

"Our goal was to craft an environment that feels both familiar and extraordinary, with warm hues and open designs. We are creating an inviting, welcoming environment that reflects the same feeling one experiences at a Four Seasons hotel or resort," says Fredrik Johannson, Partner and Executive Director of Tillberg Design of Sweden.

A New Suite Standard: Funnel and Loft Suites

Four Seasons Yachts will redefine luxury at sea with its all-suite, residential style product, best in class design and the brand’s renowned service and care delivered through a 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio.

Four Seasons Is Launching a Luxury Yacht in 2025, and It’s as Glamorous as You’d Expect

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht and Boat

The arrival of a new Four Seasons will always resound farther than its new neighborhood and this latest addition is no different—except now the whispers extend to the seas.

Four Seasons is taking its award-winning service to the ocean with the launch of Four Seasons Yachts , “appealing to discerning guests looking to reimagine their love of travel by experiencing the splendor of modern sea voyaging," according to a statement. Anticipated to set sail in late 2025, bespoke voyages will carve through the sea to some of the world’s most breathtaking destinations. The vessel will be led and staffed by a dedicated team, with staff outnumbering guests.

A rendering of what the Four Seasons yacht will be.

The first of a fleet of Four Seasons yachts, currently being built in Trieste, Italy , will span 14 decks and include 95 suites. True to Four Seasons fashion, the boat is as polished as they come—each custom-designed suite costs over 4 million to build. With “ultimate privacy, flexibility and spaciousness” in mind, the adaptable joining combinations seamlessly integrated into each suite will create villa-like estates in a nautical residential setting. The floor-to-ceiling windows in each room are all about those unobstructed riviera views, while the generous indoor-outdoor space—by way of an expansive private terrace deck—is the spot for sundowners. Accommodation will start at an average of 581 square feet with the roomiest—a four-level suite named the “Funnel”—offering more than 9,601 square feet and completed with a private splash pool and spa area.

Restaurants, lounges, and bars have been carefully considered, from expertly made coffee to meticulously plated sushi or a glass of Champagne on deck. The yacht will be equipped with a full-service spa, salon, and wellness program, the pool can transform into an outdoor movie theater or event space, and the transverse marina will also make the perfect spot to soak in the sun or dive into the warm waters.

Placing sustainability at its forefront, the vessel will use green energy fuels, zero-emission energy sources, and air emissions far better than international standards. There are further plans to integrate more state-of-the-art green technologies down the line.

Along with Four Seasons, there are a few notable masterminds behind the exciting new venture. World-leading shipbuilding group, Fincantieri, will bring its groundbreaking engineering and technology to craft the finest vessels for Four Seasons Yachts with industry expert Larry Pimentel, and luxury entrepreneurs Nadim Ashi and Philip Levine also heading the project. Lead architects Tillberg Design of Sweden and London-based Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (who’s worked with fly-high places such as Annabel’s and many of London’s best restaurants ) will oversee the exteriors and suite designs, with creative direction from Prosper Assouline.

Since Four Seasons Yachts is still far from its maiden voyage, details on itineraries are still yet to be confirmed but rumors of sun-soaked journeys through the Mediterranean and Caribbean are on the horizon. Costs will vary by individual itineraries and will only be announced once reservations open in the third quarter of 2023.

This isn’t the first time the Toronto-based luxury hospitality group has dipped its toes in the water, having launched Four Seasons Explorer cruises many years ago, and with 124 hotels and resorts already in the portfolio, the new venture “represents the next chapter of its long history of industry-leading innovation, and a milestone moment for the company” says Christian Clerc, President of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

"True vision rests in the ability to imagine the possibilities while always remaining loyal to one’s values. Our vision for this new venture does exactly that."

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Michigan football names four team captains for 2024 season

As it is with any team, it's only going to be as good as its leadership. Looking to the not-so-distant past, the same is true of the Michigan Wolverines , who has had stellar leadership over the course of the past three seasons.

Now, much of that leadership is gone. Mike Sainristil , Trevor Keegan , Zak Zinter , Blake Corum , Kris Jenkins, and Mike Barrett were all stabilizing voices for the maize and blue who have left. Another thing they had in common: they were team captains.

Thus, the Wolverines elected new team captains for the 2024 season. Unsurprisingly, all four who were named are seniors -- running back Donovan Edwards , safety Makari Paige , fullback Max Bredeson , and safety Rod Moore .

2024 Michigan Football Team Captains @Rodmoorejr @makaripaige @DEdwards__ @BredesonMax #GoBlue pic.twitter.com/qhGaVwQZal — Michigan Football (@UMichFootball) August 22, 2024

Three of the four were selected to represent Michigan in Indianapolis for Big Ten media days. The only one who wasn't was Moore, who is rehabbing from his ACL tear suffered in spring ball.

Like any team, these Wolverines will only go as far as their leadership takes them. It will be interesting to see how these four continue the culture which was established before them.

Tale of two stores: Target and Macy’s

The Target logo is displayed at a Target store on Aug. 20 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Grocery aisle deals and an emphasis on affordable but stylish clothes helped Target reverse a yearlong sales slump, while Macy’s on Wednesday reported another quarterly decline and said sales for the fiscal year will be weaker than expected due to a “more discriminating consumer” outlook. When it comes to clothing, for example, they’re often choosing store label brands, which are typically less expensive than national brands. Five bodies recovered from sunken yacht off Sicily

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers at the scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth. The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 164 feet underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life emerging over threedays of searching. The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a half-mile offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly. The search effort was driven over the fate of six missing passengers, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent US federal fraud trial. — ASSOCIATED PRESS

Judge says FTC had no authority to issue noncompete ban

A federal judge on Tuesday upheld a challenge to the Federal Trade Commission’s ban on noncompete agreements, blocking it from taking effect in September as scheduled. Judge Ada Brown of US District Court for the Northern District of Texas ruled that the antitrust agency lacked authority to issue substantive rules related to unfair methods of competition, including the noncompete rule, which would have prohibited companies from restricting their employees’ ability to work for rivals. The push to adopt the rule is part of the Biden administration’s effort to crack down on practices that regulators argue are anticompetitive, unfairly constraining workers. Brown had temporarily blocked the ban in July. Her decision Tuesday renders that injunction permanent, and nationwide in scope. Banning noncompete agreements would increase workers’ earnings by at least $400 billion over the next decade, the FTC has estimated. The agreements affect roughly 1 in 5 American workers, or around 30 million people, according to the agency, whose purview includes antitrust and consumer protection issues. — NEW YORK TIMES

Sephora to lay off hundreds in China

Cosmetics retailer Sephora is cutting hundreds of staff in China, according to people familiar with the matter, as one of LVMH’s biggest brands tries to turn around a loss-making operation in the world’s second-largest economy. Sephora China has fired both office and store staff while persuading others to resign, with an estimated 10 percent of more than 4,000 employees in the country affected, said the people, who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution. Some senior executives, including the country leads for retail and e-commerce, have also left the company, one of the people said. The shakeup comes after Sephora appointed former Nike Asia e-commerce chief Ding Xia as its new Greater China head in a bid to revive its fortunes in the mainland. — BLOOMBERG NEWS

FAA refers fewer unruly passengers to the FBI

US officials say they are referring fewer unruly airline passengers to the FBI for possible prosecution than they did during the pandemic, although they say the number of incidents remains too high. The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it referred 43 reports to the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the past year. That brings the total to more than 310 since late 2021. It is not clear how many cases resulted in prosecution. Airlines have reported more than 1,240 cases to the FAA this year. compared with nearly 6,000 in 2021. Relatively few of them are deemed serious enough to be passed along to the FBI for investigation and potential filing of criminal charges. The FAA said the rate of passenger misbehavior has dropped by more than 80 percent since early 2021, when many confrontations with flight attendants and other passengers started with travelers who objected to wearing a face mask in the midst of a deadly global pandemic. — ASSOCIATED PRESS

Walmart made billions selling Chinese e-commerce company

Walmart raised about $3.6 billion by selling its stake in Chinese e-commerce firm JD.com Inc., winding down an eight-year partnership that appears to be paying diminishing returns amid a challenging landscape for Chinese tech giants. The US retailer sold 144.5 million shares for $24.95 apiece, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. That’s a discount of 11 percent to Tuesday’s close in the United States, according to Bloomberg calculations. The US firm has built a mature e-commerce and delivery system in China for both Sam’s Club and its hypermarkets business and is focusing on its own offerings, a person familiar with the matter said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The deal also comes as a property crisis, market volatility, and uncertain job prospects take a toll on Chinese consumption. — BLOOMBERG NEWS
