"A boat is a shelter against a very aggressive environment,” says Guillaume Rolland, the principal architect at the influential Paris design firm Christian Liaigre. “Offshore is an inhospitable world of wind, waves, rain, and ultraviolet light—so the belly of a boat must be a nest, a place where one escapes all that.” At the same time, Rolland, who is a lifelong sailor, emphasizes that form must follow function. From the shape of a handle to the contour of a wall, even the most hedonistic super-yacht is, at the end of the day, a vehicle. “A boat is not a house,” he says, adding that when it comes to aesthetics on the high seas, “you must feel you are on an object that moves.”

Embodying that philosophy is one of the sveltest vessels to ever pass through Christian Liaigre’s studio— Seahawk, a 197-foot ketch completed in 2013 for a retired fashion executive. Rolland collaborated with Vancouver, British Columbia–based yacht virtuoso Ron Holland (the genius behind Rupert Murdoch’s Rosehearty and former Avis CEO Joseph Vittoria’s Mirabella V, the largest single-mast and the innovative Italian ship-builders Perini Navi to create Seahawk, a stealthy rapier of midnight-blue lacquer, propelled by colossal sails: The spinnaker is a vibrant red emblazonedwith a stylized raptor, while the other two are as gray as the densest fog. Expertly pruned to skirt the 500-geometric-ton threshold that would require additional crew and lifeboats, the luxurious Seahawk is also thrillingly swift.

“When the wind is right, we can do 15 and a half knots,” says the owner, who entered Seahawk in two major Caribbean races last year. (The boat flies the flag of the Isle of Man.) This fall he and six friends zipped from the Canary Islands to Florida to take in Art Basel Miami Beach, “catching bonito on the way and making sushi.” In November he and his wife plan to sail Seahawk around the globe. That cheers Holland, who notes, “Some clients just want to stick a boat in Monaco and use it for parties.”

Though the client took up sailing fairly recently—“I never had the time, and I’m still fit at 76, thanks to God”—he had definite ideas about a dream vessel. Sails were crucial, as much for energy savings as for sensuality. “Out on the ocean, there is no motor noise,” he enthuses, “just peace.” The latest maritime technology, such as cutting-edge winches, was key, he says, “because shaving seconds is important in a race.” The owner also wanted Liaigre’s firm for the job, having greatly admired the taste-maker’s quietly expressive Manhattan showroom, where buttery leathers meet silken woods, as well as the French firm’s work on the interiors of Vertigo, a 2011 Philippe Briand ketch.

Seahawk, the first of a limited-edition series by Perini Navi, is a seafaring Gesamtkunstwerk. The same teak used for the decks encases ceilings, walls, and floors below, though there it is offset by what Rolland calls the “chic contrast” of sycamore, rosewood, and liquidambar, materials that put a mondaine spin on traditional boatbuilding. Silver-lacquer bands strap the saloons and cabins, tracing Seahawk’s hull like modernist rib cages. Nickel-plated door handles are elegantly curved into a custom-made shape that evokes nautical cleats. “Your mind knows it’s a boat feature, even if you don’t know why,” he explains. “Collective memory is a big part of what we do at Liaigre.”

Most of the furnishings are unique to Seahawk. “The wife wanted to curl up anywhere with a book,” recalls Rolland, who developed sofas, chairs, and banquettes tailored for that preferred posture. The husband, on the other hand, had proposed two double beds for the main cabin, and Rolland placed them inventively, with one bed facing aft and the other facing forward. “It’s much nicer—the couple can talk to each other more easily,” he says, noting that “using a space in an interesting way, creating a better scenario” is a designer’s constant challenge.

Woven into Seahawk’s interior are soulful and refreshingly cliché-free emblems of the life aquatic. Free-form cedar tables cluster in the main saloon like a miniature archipelago. Lacquer maps depicting famous coastlines—one of them being Brittany, cradle of the fearsome corsairs—panel the bar and the study, and a Polynesian outrigger-canoe model and coils of Solomon Islands tevau (currency made of scarlet honeyeater feathers) occupy glass cases. Those relics and the decor they complement catch the eye but also grip the imagination, linking the 21st-century yacht to sailing’s primal past—and to the vast, capricious seas churning below.

Liaigre’s Award-Winning Superyacht Perfectly Blends French and Asian Influences

The interiors of the 144-foot sanlorenzo vessel also feature artworks by bosco sodi, jung lee, toshio shibata, and mao lizi.

Given the luxury of thousands of square feet, designers conjure majestic interior design plans with bold architectural choices and a wide array of furniture and art. But creating a compelling aesthetic within the confines of a boat is a next-level challenge that only a handful of creatives can complete. The yacht design team at Liaigre , headed by Guillaume Rolland, is clearly up for the task. Indeed, the 144-foot Sanlorenzo vessel they devised topped the category for semi-displacement or planing motor yachts 40-meters or above at the this year’s World Superyachts Awards.

Working in tandem with Italian studio Zuccon International Project, which crafted the exterior architecture, Rolland conjured a serene interior that combined the client’s request for “Asian style with a French touch.”

In conceiving this owner’s first yacht, the Liaigre team mined the maison’s historical references, drilling down to the basic components of French interior concepts. “It’s a philosophy of shaping and sculpting the interior with strong symmetries, niches that speak to each other,” says Rolland. “It’s really part of the classical French decor.”

Drawing on both fractal and Piranesian principles, the designers pushed the boundaries of scale and perspective. “When you create a diagonal perspective instead of being locked to quadrilaterals, rectangle boxes with a window that goes in each one, if you manage to get some angles and to create some unexpected windows and perspective you create additional sights which really boost the space and create a kind of magic,” he says.

Spaces that cater to evening entertaining feature a more moody palette of jewel tones, including the bar that is crafted from green onyx. Photo : Mark Seelen

Throughout, the designers employed a neutral palette, punctuated by rich jewel colors and places of luminosity, including an ethereal circular stair that opens to a frame of reflective panels. “A reflection of the sea landscape to glossy dark is very interesting,” suggest Rolland. “You will see dark reflections because it helps to boost and to diffract and duplicate this shimmering drips of the water which is a big part of the landscape.”

Elm paneling indicative of classic French styles envelope the rooms, including the bar area where green onyx mixed with moody celadon hues nod to jade, a celebrated element in Asian culture. Other elements pay homage to Asian design including custom ovaloid doors that narrow at the base, reminiscent of decorative screens, while two terrariums housing bonsai create visual interest in the living area.

Liaigre furnishings are installed throughout, elevating the residential areas that also feature a respectable collection of artworks including pieces by Bosco Sodi, Jung Lee, Toshio Shibata, and Mao Lizi. “The choice of artwork is really key to boost and give this extra little twist to the interior,” says Rolland. “There was a kind of corner area, which was a result of some volumetric choices, and it was interesting when you go from forward to aft to also have another eye-catcher, so your eyes are always stimulated.”

Also evident in the final decoration is Liaigre’s dedication to meticulousness, with every element infinitely considered. “There is nothing done by random; there is nothing done that is not thought twice from every aspect,” explains Rolland. “It can be the swing of the door—is it better from the left or the right; which one gives the best perspective entering the room. Everything is analyzed.”

The future of yacht design

9 September 2024

Author: Joanna Lewis

Yacht design is constantly evolving as yacht designers push the boundaries of traditional design and new technologies come to the fore.

The world’s most iconic yachts boast striking design features that set them apart from other vessels, from innovative naval architecture to design features that focus on enhancing a yacht’s green credentials.

Here we take a look at some of the most pioneering yacht design trends changing the yachting industry for the better.

The evolution of yacht design - rendering superyacht

Interior yacht design trends

Interior yacht design has changed significantly to factor in modern yachting lifestyles.

Yacht interiors now have a strong focus on flexible layouts that are more open-plan. Furthermore, there is a growing trend for onboard spaces that blur the boundaries between a yacht’s interior and exterior areas. Vast glass sliding doors that can be fully opened, retractable roofs, and fold-down balconies are designed to completely eliminate any boundary between a yacht’s interior and exterior.

Wellness is a big part of the yachting lifestyle, with private yachts now dedicating a significant portion of their real estate to spas, fitness suites, and yoga and meditation areas. Interior designers are also now bringing nature onboard, with hydroponic and vertical gardens that not only enhance wellbeing but also offer chefs access to an organic garden.

The latest interior yacht design trends are also harnessing exciting new materials such as sustainable textured wood, recycled glass, natural stone, and fine fabrics with a firm nod to organic forms that mimic nature.

Finally, advances in digital technology are transforming interiors, with vast tech windows or walls that offer virtual views and streaming services.

The evolution of yacht design sketch exterior

Exterior yacht design trends

Exterior yacht design has, arguably, seen the most significant shift in design trends from vessels with soft curved exteriors that mimic the organic shapes found in nature to avant-garde vessels that challenge conventional yacht design.

One key advancement in technology has been glass, which has led to a slew of eye-catching vessels with vast glass superstructures. Not only does the use of glass create head-turning vessels, but this material also floods the interior with light, while providing owners and their guests with breathtaking views of the ocean.

In addition, yacht exteriors are becoming more striking, with deck spaces being used in new ways. Yacht designers are now placing more emphasis on a yacht’s exterior with an increasing amount of real estate being designated to alfresco dining.

Vast beach clubs are now the norm on modern-day vessels, enhancing an owner’s connection to the water and direct access to the sea. It is common to see multiple exterior decks for relaxing and entertaining.

marine design yacht interior

New advances in hull design are also helping to transform onboard comfort and the overall performance of luxury yachts. A hull typically amounts to around 70% of a yacht’s total structural design, making hull design a complex part of a yacht’s overall design.

Thanks to advances in hull designs, modern yachts now boast enhanced seakeeping and energy efficiencies.

There is no question that the world of yacht design is constantly evolving as designers seek to create ever more eye-catching vessels that meet the demands and lifestyle habits of today’s yachting enthusiasts

Shhh! Ohtani chase kept quiet by design

Blue jays stay tightlipped in pursuit, while dodgers manager admits to their meeting.

Keegan Matheson

Keegan Matheson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Silence is golden and secrecy is sublime.

Standing in the eye of the biggest, boldest pursuit in franchise history, the Blue Jays aren’t saying a word. Even the name “ Shohei Ohtani ” is spoken carefully, each syllable tiptoeing gently to the next.

Don’t rock the boat. Don’t wake the baby.

The secrecy with which baseball’s brightest star lives his life has taken over his free agency, which is bubbling to a boil here at the Winter Meetings. Earlier this offseason, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that it would be “held against” potential suitors if news leaked that he’d visited a specific team.

Well, it’s happening.

Every good drama has a shocking confession, and this one came from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Tuesday afternoon, admitting that he and members of Los Angeles’ front office had met with Ohtani in recent days. It all went very well, the veteran manager thought, and besides, the news would get out eventually.

“Clearly,” Roberts said, “ Shohei is our top priority .”

This was a wailing siren through the silence, because even following reports that Ohtani had toured Toronto’s training facilities in Dunedin, Fla., over the weekend, the Blue Jays refused to give that fire any oxygen, instead letting it live as a detail and nothing more.

Soon after Roberts dropped that nugget, though, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes stood before a throng of cameras -- less than 50 feet from Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins doing the same -- and struck a much different tone. Gomes acknowledged the comment made by his manager, said he was surprised that it was made and went no further. No comments on Ohtani, no comments on a meeting that may or may not have happened.

That toothpaste isn’t going back in the tube.

Across the room, Atkins spoke vaguely, dancing in the shadows between questions. It’s the same approach he took Monday, when his in-person media availability was suddenly shifted to Zoom , where the GM was cryptic with details as he sat in front of a blank, white wall, refusing to answer where in the world he was.

“Everything that we’re doing to make the team better, to the extent that we will keep private, we will do,” Atkins said. “Meetings that occur, don’t occur, I’m not going to get into the specifics of.”

It’s remarkable to watch this happen in real time, a big league GM sidestepping questions not as standard practice, but as an act of strategy that fans are suddenly praising. There’s an elephant in the room, but Atkins will not confirm whether elephants do or do not exist.

“There’s an incredible amount of energy, an incredible amount of buzz around the game and around several potential opportunities, certainly one that is historic, potentially,” Atkins said.

Atkins is built for this game. He’s the Shohei Ohtani of secrecy.

The Blue Jays’ GM went as far as saying that they are “fortunate to be one that’s being considered,” but offered no details about the reported visit to the club’s player development complex over the weekend.

Manager John Schneider did the same, saying “we meet with lots of players” and sticking to the script throughout his media availability. When a reporter joked that Schneider looked tanned when asking about his whereabouts and involvement in said meeting, Schneider just cracked another smile.

“I live in Florida,” he said.

The logic and logistics of it all point toward a decision coming soon from Ohtani. The Blue Jays and Dodgers are clearly among the front-runners here, and while it’s unclear what impact Roberts’ revelation and recent reports will have on Ohtani’s decision, these two clubs are clearly involved in the final sprint. Others, including the Giants, Cubs and Angels, have also widely been linked to this historic chase.

When this news breaks, the landscape of Major League Baseball will tilt in an instant. Until then, it’s one of the biggest secrets in baseball history and the Blue Jays aren’t making a sound.

SL44, a hedonistic dream becomes reality

Behind the name SL 44, is a 44,5 meters superyacht entirely made of aluminium, built by the Italian shipyard San Lorenzo, with interiors designed by Liaigre.

Behind the name SL 44, is a 44,5 meters superyacht entirely made of aluminium, built by the Italian shipyard San Lorenzo, with interiors designed by Liaigre.

liaigre yacht design

The sponsor and future owner of the yacht had one particular requirement: to combine Asian style with a French touch… The Liaigre team took up the challenge and realized the dream of a hedonist eager to express his idea of way of life of absolute refinement.

liaigre yacht design

To sail offers a perception of space and time that allows us to escape from routine and reconnect with the elements. To be able to admire the sea and gaze at the horizon is a total luxury today.   On a boat, it is all about smoothness: the SL44 expresses its ease and freedom to move through its design and layout. In the cabin, there are no sharp angles, just curves and round lines that give a feeling of immediate softness. A softness that is determined by a need for optimal ergonomics but also by the desire to stir emotions through its architecture.   Moving on board has nothing to do with what happens on land… One’s body is often confronted with walls and the interior spaces are not always conducive for sharing and conviviality.

liaigre yacht design

Sailing on a yacht is primarily living there. The requirements are therefore based on the comfort of the interior and exterior areas and their ability to offer moments of conviviality but also time to rest. Liaigre places the human being in the center of all its projects which leads architects and designers to question people’s movement within a space, mastering traffic, anticipating movement and gestures linked to the architectural elements, furniture and everyday objects.

When it comes to designing the interior architecture, fittings and furniture for a yacht, the question of an optimized space, that is created and managed in the best way or that is simply expressed, is crucial The principles of design and custom-made manufacturing make perfect sense.

liaigre yacht design

The principles of a fusion or dialogue between Asian culture and French style are expressed through subtle details such as the door frames which have a slightly narrower base, in reference to Asian architecture. Similarly, in the large living room, two crystal terrariums hold miniature trees – a nod to the Bonsai tradition. The wood species chosen for this project link Asian aesthetics with French style, combining varnished eucalyptus and light elm that recall the tradition of 18th century woodwork.

With clean shapes and apparent simplicity, the splendor of the layout is revealed through a multitude of details that are not immediately apparent, but which make the difference and characterize Liaigre’S approach and specific luxury design. There are light ambiances for the day rooms, darker ones for the spaces dedicated to night life and parties, a solarium, swimming pool and beach club that kisses the water. Everything about this superyacht is about relaxation and the art of living.
