The Hidden Benefits of a Seaman’s Book

A Seaman’s Book is issued by a yacht’s flag authority and provides a record of service — and it's now more important than ever.

Rumors are rife within the industry that a Seaman’s Book can carry weight to back up or even replace visa applications or passports. But legally speaking these claims don’t hold much water; after all, a Seaman’s Book is not a travel document, it’s a record of career certification and experience.

But instances abound where a Seaman’s Book has helped people to get out of tight spots with the authorities. “Queen of Visa Applications” Laurence Thary, yacht agent at Logic Yachting Solutions, Monaco, insists a Seaman’s Book helps her when she is negotiating with the authorities. “Seaman’s Books are essential for crew who do not form part of the EU and they help our work enormously. In most cases, we are dealing with difficult or exceptional cases to try and help arrange visas, so all documentation you can lay your hands on is important.”

And the little book is now more important than ever, says Thary. ’I’m having a hard time when crew don’t have a Seaman’s Book, especially now with travel restrictions. In some circumstances, seamen are exempt from quarantine if they have their Seaman’s Book,“ with the exception of those arriving from red-listed areas such as South Africa, Brazil, Chile, India, Bahrain, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Uruguay.

What is a Seaman’s Book?

A Seaman’s Book is the common name for a Discharge Book or Service Book. They can be issued by the yacht’s flag authority for the purpose of proving onboard service, including a record of career certification and experience. The British Seamen’s Discharge Book (not to be confused with the now almost now obsolete Seamen’s Card) is the official MCA and Red Ensign Group log book, for which any British citizen (or any non-British citizen employed on a U.K.-flagged vessel) can apply.

“There is no strict policy for having a discharge book on board yachts as far as I know, but crew applying for certificates of competency must have a record of signing on and off the yacht,” explains Nick Salter of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).  “This can be in the form of a Discharge Book or a Certificate of Discharge.”

The MCA also accepts other approved service record books, such as the Professional Yachtsmen’s Association (PYA) Service Record Book. Former PYA Administrator Bridget Featherby points out that, “The PYA Seaman’s Record Book is part of the PYA membership package and all certificates are sighted and stamped and all sea time testimonials verified and stamped — a procedure accepted by the MCA relinquishing the need to send testimonials to the MCA when applying for or revalidating a Certificate of Competency.”

Generally speaking, you do not need to apply for a new Seaman’s Book from a different shipping registry each time you change to a different flagged yacht, explains Ron Strathdee, principal surveyor in charge of standards at Isle of Man Shipping Register. “Many yacht crewmembers apply to us for an Isle of Man Discharge Book if they are joining one of our yachts and have never had one before. If they already have one issued by another flag state and the information relating to their sea service is available in English then we will accept that document instead.”

Do I Need a Seaman’s Book?

You will need a Seaman’s Book if you are a crewmember who works on a ship or large superyacht or a crewmember employed on a registered ship or large yacht.

How Do I Get a Seaman’s Book?

To obtain a Seaman’s Book you will need to submit an application, the process of which can vary depending on the yacht’s flag authority, along with copies of your STCW, ENG1 Medical certificates and Certificate of Competency, a copy of your passport, and any other relevant qualifications.

When you fire up your yacht, amazing things happen. Your generator kicks in, and starts delivering power to critical systems. Lights turn on throughout your boat. The HVAC system begins monitoring yacht temperatures, and heating/cooling accordingly, and your yacht control panel gives you a full system readout of your boat’s current state.

Have you ever wondered what’s behind all of these functions? They don’t happen on their own! An advanced Programmable Logic Controller (PLC for short) is responsible for the automation of many common yacht tasks!

The PLC can be thought of as the “nerve center” of your yacht. Very few things happen on-board that the PLC does not have some kind of responsibility for – so proper PLC programming and installation are critical for luxury yachts.

In this article, we’ll explore PLCs, what they are, and what they do – so that you can understand this critical yacht system in further detail.

What Is A PLC – And How Is It Different From A Normal Computer?

PLCs are a specialized kind of computer – but they are very different from your MacBook or your desktop PC. Modern personal computers have been designed to be very flexible, and powerful enough to accomplish an enormous variety of tasks.

In contrast, PLCs are very basic, and can only be programmed to accomplish a narrow band of different tasks. But there’s a reason for this – PLCs are built to function continuously, and without malfunctioning for years on end.

In a PLC, speed and power are not important. Instead, a PLC is built to provide constant, reliable performance in high-stakes industrial applications. Today, PLCs aren’t just used in yachts – they’re used in manufacturing to control million-dollar pieces of equipment, in amusement parks to control rides, and much more!

Still confused? Think of it like this – a normal computer is like a race car. It can go extremely fast for short periods of time, but is prone to breaking down. A PLC is like a long-haul truck – with proper maintenance, it’s going to keep running for hundreds of thousands of miles, even though it’s a bit slower.

What Are PLCs Used For In Yachts?

You may be confused about why your yacht needs a PLC – but think about all of the automated tasks that must be accomplished every time you use your yacht.

Your yacht has to do a systems check to ensure that everything is functioning properly. Engines and electrical systems must be turned on, HVAC systems kick into gear, machinery is monitored, and alarm systems are turned on – and this is just the beginning of the responsibilities of your PLC!

If there is something that happens on your yacht without your direct intervention, chances are that your PLC is responsible for it. That’s why modern yachts often use multiple redundant PLCs – if a PLC fails due to an accident or damage, manual control of a luxury yacht is nearly impossible.

Your Yacht Control Panel – Where You Interact With Your PLC

Today’s modern luxury yachts usually use touchscreen-based, waterproof control panels. Your yacht control panel is typically the only place where you will interact with your PLC, and it’s where you can view data about your yacht’s performance, and adjust certain aspects about how your PLC works.

Proper control panel design allows luxury yacht owners to have a fine-tuned control over important yacht systems, but ensures that user inputs will not cause a critical system failure of any kind.

This new 21-footer is a conventional center console at first glance, with a large storage box forward, four fishboxes in the deck, and aft storage compartments. The fishboxes drain right through holes in the boat’s hull, and have plugs to keep water out when the boxes are in use. The boat’s design is simple, with plenty of storage and lots of uncluttered space.

For instance, a cooler serves as the forward console seat, and the console itself has an acrylic wraparound windshield with a handrail, drink holders, and a large box where you can mount quite a few electronics. The twin pedestal seats sit atop a large box that contains a 120-quart live well, and it’s obvious the boat was designed with fishermen in mind. You might pass it off as just another 21-foot center console, but that would be a mistake. When you take a close look, you’ll realize that this is a very different boat.

New Hull Material

Radical changes in boat-building technology don’t come along very often. The last one occurred in the early 1950s, when fiber-reinforced plastic (fiberglass) appeared on the scene and began to replace wood as the boat-building material of choice. The vast majority of recreational fishing boats are now built of fiberglass, of course, although wood and aluminum are still around.

Logic Boats, a subsidiary of Genmar Industries, believes it has come up with the next paradigm shift in the way boats are built. Logic has taken technology developed in the canoe and kayak industry and applied it to the construction of fishing boats. Logics are made, not of fiberglass, but of roto-molded marine-grade polyethylene plastic, through a process called Roplene construction.

The process involves a technique called rotational molding in which thermoplastic polyethylene pellets approximate consistency of sugar. The powder is poured into a metal mold, usually stainless steel or aluminum, which is loaded into a large oven that is heated to 500 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rock & Roll!

The mold then begins to move along several axes, rotating and rocking through a 70- to 110-degree arc. Engineers call this process “rock-and-roll rotational molding.” This motion makes the powdered plastic tumble around inside of the mold, distributing it evenly. As the interior of the metal mold gets hotter, the plastic begins to melt, and each revolution of the mold deposits another layer of plastic, which in turn melts and provides a sticky surface for yet another layer of plastic to cling to.

This continues until all of the powdered plastic is melted and evenly distributed throughout the mold. The “cook” cycle is controlled by computers, which closely monitor variables such as temperature, speed, angle and orientation of the mold within the oven. Once the cook cycle is complete, a cooling phase begins, with the mold continuing to rotate until it cools sufficiently.

An interesting phase of the cooling process concerns shrinkage. As the boats cool, they shrink approximately three percent, so a 17-foot boat starts out almost six inches longer than it ends up. It’s critical to manage this shrinkage so that machined components such as floors, hatches and panels will fit properly, so Logic came up with an innovative solution. It developed an articulated cooling jig that actually moves with the boat during the final stages of cooling stage and has built-in stops at predetermined points that regulate the final dimensions of critical areas.

Lifetime Hull Warranty

Logic also had structural issues to deal with, because while polyethylene has incredible impact resistance, it is also quite flexible and needs lots of additional stiffening. Oversized stringers, significantly larger than those in a comparably sized fiberglass boat, are molded into the deck portion of the mold, providing exceptional longitudinal stiffness. The stringers are completely bonded to the hull itself during the heating process, resulting in a boat that comes out essentially in one rugged piece. The folks at Logic have such confidence in the process that they offer a limited lifetime hull warranty that can even be transferred to a second owner.

The planet benefits from the rotational molding process, too, because the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that is such a problem with fiberglass construction is completely eliminated. No emissions and very little waste are produced, and the boat is even recyclable! That’s a claim no fiberglass boat builder can make.
