Umberto Felci: Performance Designer

umberto felci yacht design

Dufour has successfully been conquering the sailing world with boats signed by famous Italian designer. Umberto Felci has sailing in his blood with many successful projects with both production and racing boats, many of these are well known in Croatia as well

Umberto Felci is a famous name in the world of racing sailboats, designing some of the fastest and coolest yachts you can see on the water. ‘Father’ of the boats like UFO 28, he is also strongly bonded to the world of non-racing, production boats, his studio is inseparable to Dufour shipyard for which he designs all the projects including recently introduced Dufour 63, revealed at the Düsseldorf Boat Show this year.

Since when have you designed for Dufour and how did this collaboration start? I started to collaborate with Dufour Yachts in 2002 when I was asked to design the naval architecture of the new performance range. The Dufour 40, 34 and 44: all three were fast cruisers that have had a lot of success both from the commercial point of view and from the racing results perspective.

What does this mean for you as they are ‘mainstream’ sailboats not racing boats? It wasn’t my first experience in the non-racing sailing yachts world, but it was my first with an experienced and well-known production yachts builder. It was very interesting and challenging from many angles. You have to design a yacht that is fast, beautiful and easy to use. Then you need to imagine you don’t have one unique client to satisfy, but rather, many clients with different wishes.

Lately, they presented a 63, their newest and biggest model, can you comment on this yacht? From my point of view this is a very innovative yacht. It is, typical from Dufour and Felci, a real sailing yacht capable of optimum sailing performances, but this time we have added extra functionality outside, in order to help the owner enjoy his vacation aboard better. We have also not forgotten about the inside, where, thanks to a new ‘home-like’ style, I think we have opened the door to a new way of living aboard. Maybe less ‘traditional sailor’ style, but for sure the new features are a lot more comfortable and in line with the times.

Umberto Felci

What is the best description of the Dufour range for you? Dufour Yachts boss Salvatore Serio is very careful to produce a real sailing yacht. This is always a key point in any brief. Real sailing yachts dedicated to real sailors – so, fast, comfortable and safe. This is the foundation that has never been forgotten and it is on these grounds that he asks for new innovations. Innovation solution, details, concept and style. Hard to follow but the commercial results demonstrate that Salvatore Serio’s vision pays off. From my side, I can say that in any Felci Yachts design, our performance DNA is always present along with the love for details, style and perfection. All of these combined aspects produce a great yacht.

You also (re)started a nice collaboration with Grand Soleil? For Cantiere Del Pardo we designed many boats in the past, like their larger – Grand Soleil 72 Custom, the GS 44, the 45 and the GS 50. The latest one was designed together with Nauta Yachts and was the Grand Soleil 58. An interesting experience and a good commercial success.

You were an accomplished dinghy sailor and sailed for FIV when you were young, can you give your best moments from those times? It was a fantastic experience. I started racing 420 at 14 and I finished racing 470 at 30, after two Olympic campaigns. Even though it was my passion, it was something akin to work and could be very difficult at times. Many hours of training, racing and travelling around Europe. But I was lucky, I had a great sponsor, so I had the opportunity to make it at a top level for many years and, in parallel, to find the time to proceed with my architectural university studies.

Fast sailing boats that marked one era was your ‘drive’, some of these boats like Angelo Rosso are still very competitive in Croatia, which boats do you consider most important and why (UFO’s)? Not only Angelo Rosso, but also Bravissima, ClandDesTeam (the garda lake racer) and Vento di Sardegna (Open 50 ex Wind – that took part at the Vendee Globe in 2000-2001) are still winning. It’s nice to see now that those old projects were ahead of their time and are still a target to beat today. Also, the UFO 28 was an innovative project too, it was my fifth project and the first which went into a production series. It’s rewarding to see them all still racing in Trieste, with so many elite sailors still enjoying them.

Umberto Felci

Among your new projects, what would you select as the most interesting? Actually, we are focused on many new, diverse and interesting projects – fast cruisers are one design and we have some new projects for Dufour and a couple of new exciting, large custom yachts. We are evolving 360° in order to continue to create better and better projects. Elegance, comfort, safety and of course, speed.

Are there other areas where you are involved in design? My company is specialized in sailing yacht design and I assure you it’s enough. We like to manage the complete project so we usually develop the naval architecture, the design style, the interiors architecture and style, then we study the structure and the hydrodynamics. There are so many aspects and details to follow that we need to remain focused on this. We are now also working on a catamaran, this is a new and interesting challenge for us, but, it is still in the realm of sailing boats.

Do you know Croatia, and if you do, how? Every year I take a rest, with a couple of weeks sailing in Croatia and I think I’m becoming quite an expert on all the beauties. I love the variety of islands and together with my family, we are discovering fantastic new locations every year.

Umberto Felci – Lorenzo Giovannozzi

umberto felci yacht design

Co-Founders and Yacht Designer at Felci Yacht Design

Felci Yachts has been active in Yacht Design field since 2001. The company’s design activity is aimed both at shipyards (Italian and Internationals) for mass production of boats, and private customers. In particular, Felci Yachts is the sole supplier of the designs of the famous French shipyard Dufour Yachts, one of the largest in the world. The yacht projects made by Felci Yachts have been awarded several times in the international field by the specialized press. Felci Yachts, in February 2018, is defined by DOMUS  the historic architecture and design magazine founded by Gio Ponti, ...one of the most famous and innovative Yacht design studios in the world. It has its roots in the design activity initially carried out as a freelance by Arch. Umberto Felci, who since 1992 has dedicated himself with passion to yacht design. In 2001 was born the partnership with Eng. Lorenzo Giovannozzi starting the Felci Yachts Design studio. The competitive charge matured in years of international races and Olympic classes racing activity by the founding members, Umberto Felci and Lorenzo Giovannozzi, led to the development of many offshore racing yachts as well as numerous bullets and one design dedicated to inshore races. The first projects were a springboard to test a large number of innovative solutions that proved to be successful, solutions that until then few had tried. Felci Yachts Design is currently developing the most elegant and innovative “Fast Cruisers Yachts” that are made by some of the most prestigious national and international shipyards, including the shipyard Persico Marine, the shipyard ICE Yachts and the shipyard Adria Sail, that have launched in recent years numerous yachts of 50-60-70 feet signed Felci Yacht Design. It is in this type of boat that the characteristics of speed, efficiency and management, typical of a racer, are integrated in a total way with the comfort, elegance and functionality of a yacht born exclusively for the cruise. The same concept, but differently applied, is connected to the design of boats for mass production, built by the most important international shipyards such as Del Pardo shipyard and Dufour Yachts. Felci Yachts has also explored the world of catamarans, realizing for Dufour Yachts and JJL Yard, projects that have generated catamarans of 48 and 50 feet. Currently an 80-foot catamaran is under project as well as two 60 feet catamarans. Today Felci Yachts boasts a wide and heterogeneous range of models, thanks to the ability of comparison and synergy between architects and engineers and the deep nautical culture common to all designers who form the team Felci Yacht design, key elements of proper design that is often called art.

Umberto Felci on Designing a Sailing Yacht

  • February 5th, 2017

During Dusseldorf Boatshow I was honoured to meet one of the most renown yacht designers of our present – Umberto Felci. His work is known all over the world as he is designing one-offs and fast, seaworthy racing yachts. The Italian also works for the production boat company Dufour Yachts based in La Rochelle at the Atlantic Ocean and he took his time showing me around aboard his latest creation for the French, the Dufour 63.

From hand sketches to 3D modelling

No Frills Sailing.com | Lars Reisberg: “Umberto, it really is a pleasure having you here with me aboard the all-new Dufour Exclusive 63, your latest project. What I am interested in is your approach to designing a yacht like this, the whole process that´s behind it. So my first question would be: How are you working yourself into the project in terms of converging more and more to the new boat?”

Umberto Felci: “I am doing first sketches of course, I generally trace the first lines by hand, doing several sketches and shape models but I shift to computer aided modelling very soon.”

umberto felci yacht design

NFS.com: “Oh, and I thought you yacht designers would sit behind huge tables and do sketches by free hand …”

Umberto Felci: “Especially when it comes to the superstructure I would do some drawings by hand, but very, very soon they get digitalized. And you know why? That´s because as a designer, or naval architect, I need to be able to look at what I do from all different angles, I need to see the very form from every possible direction to judge what I am doing. That gives me the chance to visualize my ideas in a certain way.”

NFS.com: “… and this is only possible with 3D computer models. I understand.”

Umberto Felci: “Right. In past times I would have put out different models made of Balsa to judge the shapes I am designing, but today it´s computer work. That´s my personal style of working.”

umberto felci yacht design

NFS.com: “Tell me more about the very design process itself. How do you perceive ideas and how are you making the decisions which lead to a new shape or detail?”

Umberto Felci: “First of all, there is a difference between making a racing yacht or designing a cruiser production boat – for example this new Dufour 63. When you are making a racer, then hydrodynamics, weight, layout and the very shape of a fast hull is priority. That´s a different approach than I would make when there is a new cruiser in the making.”

On designing a yacht

NFS.com: “When I look at some brands of the so called “volume-boats” it seems obvious that those boats are made from inside-out. Meaning, that the number and size of berths, bathrooms and stuff seem to have been designed first and afterwards it has been tested which hull would fit around the interior. How are Dufour Yachts designed by you as they are cruisers of a large production company too?”

Umberto Felci: “Well, first of all, I like to consider myself a Naval Architect with the ability to balance  the different and contrasting elements which are part of a sail boat. With that in mind, it is a matter of course that when I design a new sail boat  I take pride in the statement that Felci Yachts do sail very, very well. For this reason I do not sacrifice seaworthiness for volume. But if there is more volume required I study the way to design a great hull with that volumes, keeping seaworthiness and performance always safe.”

umberto felci yacht design

Umberto Felci: “But honestly, designing a yacht is always a compromise, for sure. All elements have to be aligned to form an order. That´s maybe another uniqueness in the work of my design office: We try to always manage the whole project of a new yacht. That means that we think it is not a good idea to split exterior and interior design for example: It will raise the costs and will be a cause for problems. Having all aspects of a project concentrated in one hand will avoid long decision periods, misunderstandings and all sorts of problems.”

NFS.com: “… that´s the “too many cooks”-thing, isn´t it?”

Umberto Felci: “Exactly. Designing a sailing yacht is a very long process and even with one designer and one client a complex one. So being the principal design office for Dufour Yachts for example is a very rare opportunity. It is not just because we have been able to make one single design but to work with Dufour Yachts for 15 years now – that is a whole range of boats! We started by re-working the Dufour-approach and then we have been able to develop ourselves along Dufour with every new yacht we were putting out for the yard.”

On client-designer-relations

NFS.com: “Which one could observe when roaming the different yachts. I could really see how you changed over the time, for example, the saloon-concepts and even details like the skylights or the shelves in the saloon. That´s an interesting factor. Speaking of your collaboration with Dufour, please tell me more about the client-designer-relation.”

Umberto Felci: “First of all I have to thank Salvatore Serio, President of Dufour Group and a friend of mine, for this opportunity. Being responsible for the development of a whole fleet for more than 15 years now is really rarely seen in the business and I think it has been paying off for both the company and the boats themselves. Asking for the relationship, well, it´s easy: For example the new Exclsuive 63 we are sitting in. The whole process of making that boat up to a point when we where able to hand construction plans to the workers in the yard approximately took some 3.000 hours.”

umberto felci yacht design

Umberto Felci: “As a very first step, there are just written words, pictures and graph. It is on a such a briefing on which both Salvatore and his team would work on parallel to me and my team. It´s a collection of ideas, of inspirational writings. We compare it, prioritize it, discuss it. Initially there are no drawings needed, just words. A wide range of ideas as to speak.”

NFS.com: “Can you give an example?”

Umberto Felci: “Well, looking at the new 63, the overall idea was “communication”. Salvatore believed that as a family-capable boat, this new yacht should improve communication between crew and guests, between the guests and all on board in a way how it was never done before. That would for example lead to these small steps between steering wheels and winches to grant an easy access to the deck – this is what improves communication because it cuts hurdles. Once again we are lucky working with Dufour because we know each other and there is a huge trust between us to make the right things.”

umberto felci yacht design

Umberto Felci: “Another example would be the task that I wanted to change a bit the motto of our work here. Mostly it´s like “we want to combine comfort with performance”, right? But what is this comfort? That´s the thing: Comfort is a very individual thing. So, we changed this motto to: “We are to combine family wishes with performance”. That´s a new one, right? Family, that is your wife, your kids with all their demands: A large dining table, where there´s the communication-theme again, the steps here and there and even down below deck when you look at the saloon: No navigation station anymore (it´s in the aft cabin) but a more home-style approach, bookshelves instead of classic stowage. That´s where designing makes great fun because you define something new, something better. And many times we have to thank our clients who somehow “force” us towards new directions.”

NFS.com: “So after the written words you start designing process digitally. And I suppose you are often reviewing the steps either with your team and with your clients as well?”

Umberto Felci: “Of course we do. A boat, a design, as I mentioned before, is a compromise. And here we have the communication-theme again.”

On his latest project: Dufour Exclusive 63

NFS.com: “Looking at your latest project, this Dufour 63, what are your personal Top 5 when it comes to design details?”

Umberto Felci: “Well, at first, it´s her hull shape: She is and will be a true sailing yacht with a high performance under canvas. That is what she is made for, to be a sailing boat. Secondly I like the new details we have been able to incorporate from motoryachts, like the sofa turning into a breakfast folding table in the aft that is very motorboat-style but will be a major step forward in terms of enjoying the boat and improving communication. Third, the shape of the coach roof which is very racy, very flat and flush with the aggressive skylights. It makes the boat almost appear like a proper racing yacht.”

umberto felci yacht design

Umberto Felci: “Well, fourth would be the Owner aft cabin, which is appearing more like a small loft. The bed, the size of the cabin overall is unmatched in this class of yachts and I think we achieved to make the whole interior appear more like home than like a yacht. If an owner would like to have a cabin with comparable volume, he would have to go for a lot larger yachts, but we managed to do this with a production boat, which is a great step forward indeed.”

NFS.com: “Last question for now, Umberto. When it wouldn´t be for a client but solely for yourself, how would a sailing yacht by Umberto Felci for Umberto Felci look like?”

Umberto Felci: “That is easy: It would be a light boat, made also with carbon fibre. It would be an extremely fast yacht, very stable, sturdy and robust in every condition. It would probably be open space inside.”

umberto felci yacht design

NFS.com: “And why don´t you do this kind of yacht?”

Umberto: (is laughing) “Oh, I did: The 45 feet Felci Yacht NORDICA comes really close to this, also my latest 65 feet design. I love seeing those yachts sailing.”

NFS.com: “Umberto, thanks so much for spending your time answering my questions and giving an exclusive inside into your working process and the work for Dufour Yachts.”

It have been impressive 60 minutes with Umberto. After we spoke, he was approached by an Italian and they greeted each other with most of joy. As Umberto told me, the man was the current holder of the professorship at University of Milan of Naval Design. Here, decades ago, young Umberto wrote his final thesis on yacht design, which had made such an impact that the University afterwards created the study course “naval design”. So much for speaking to a legend …

Designer Umberto Felci unveils the concept of the new Ice 80

Ice 80 exteriors

With the new Ice 80, Umberto Felci has forged a design work that changes with light, depending on whether it is day or night, dawn or twilight. But the concept that Mr. Felci has handed over to Ice Yachts offers much more than its aesthetic side.

Of course, the essential and clean lines , which combine the elegance of the RS with the sumptuousness of bluewater cruisers, are eye-catching and seductive. But, in addition to an ultra-modern hull that seems to be modeled by reflections, the Ice 80 boats many other qualities, starting with the retractable numerically controlled keel that transfers the power of the sail plain to an artefact that will be made entirely of carbon and built according to the highest engineering criteria. This translates into an important advantage for the owner, who therefore will have the opportunity to steer a versatile boat and feel at sea both in the cruising and the racing mode thanks to the race set-up.

Ice 80 project

The Ice 80 is also equipped with retractable bow and a stern thrusters for easier and faster mooring maneuvers.

The sail plan is performing and simple at the same time: the mainsail can be rolled up in the boom, the bow sails are furling and the genoa rail is self-tacking for easier management and trimming even with small crew. This configuration, also thanks to the vast experience of the Italian shipyard and his designer, makes the Ice 80 a powerful boat, suitable for both offshore races and quieter cruises where, due to her beauty, is certainly destined to catch everyone’s eye.

Functional and futuristic exteriors, extraordinarily comfortable interiors

Ice 80 cockpit

The same requirements can be found in the elegant interiors, where the abundant brightness coming from the deckhouse side windows and from the oblong windows of the sides, enhances their impeccable symmetry .

Ice 80 master cabin

The galley, the captain’s cabin and the engine room are equally designed in a pragmatic way, while the clear, natural and high quality materials make the lower deck, with its super habitable volumes , a real floating apartment.

The LED projectors , placed both on deck and inside, give life to unprecedented scenarios, differianting their intensity and colours thanks to the new automation systems which, featuring uncompromised design, make use of top-level components.

Ice 80 deckhouse

” Externally, I wanted to draw a few lines in the name of essentiality and purety; internally, instead, while respecting a minimal profile, I paid particular attention to comfort which should be essential but exhaustive at the same time on board. In short, few things, few weights but at the right point – designer Umberto Felci explains – The Ice 80 is therefore a highly performing boat, suitable for both racing and cruising”.

Ice 80 : the Umberto Felci’s latest masterpiece

Umberto Felci unveils his latest masterpiece, here is the new Ice 80

While an artwork shines with its own light, a masterpiece like this is also able to shine with reflected light, because it is capable of catalyzing natural light and radiating it exponentially.

With the new Ice 80 , Umberto Felci has forged a design work that changes with light, depending on whether it is day or night, dawn or twilight. But the concept that Mr. Felci has handed over to Ice Yachts offers much more than its aesthetic side.

The new rudder columns guarantee a total control of the boat from this position, as well as maximum pleasure at the helm. Every safety and control system is, in fact, activated from there, even in the most demanding conditions.

The Ice 80 is also equipped with retractable bow and a stern thrusters for easier and faster mooring maneuvers.

The exterior layout is distinguished by sleek and futuristic lines, designed to be functional without leaving nothing to chance. From the cockpit benches covered with solid teak to the carbon table, from the cleats integrated into the gunwale to the light sockets on the deck, passing through the most hidden details: all this is part of a vast and organic project, where safety and efficiency are two essential requirements.

Umberto Felci design

The exclusive configuration of the master cabin , with a king-sized bed oriented towards the bow, allows to enjoy the luxury experience of a suite with sea view. The VIP cabins offer privacy and comfort, each equipped with air-conditioning, head, separate shower, Wi-Fi system and folding TV screens.

YACHT 18/24 : Home to many, many boats

Fridtjof Gunkel

YACHT 18/24: Home to many, many boats

There is so much behind our favourite word, sailing! Adventure, freedom, experiencing nature, vastness, discoveries, tranquillity, encounters with other people, countries and sailing areas or even the indispensable technology.

We cannot emphasise this often enough: Sailing is pure diversity, and YACHT meets this great variance every fortnight with reports, features, service topics, tests, portraits and interviews. The sport, the hobby, the passion cover a huge spectrum, from cruising to regatta sailing, from daysailing to long-distance sailing, from co-sailing to single-handed cruising.

And this has been reflected in every issue of YACHT for 120 years now. Sailing is a broad spectrum, and this is especially true for the boats, without which the whole thing would not be possible. As a full-range supplier, we love them all.

To make it into the magazine, they only have to fulfil certain requirements: We present new yachts and dinghies, sometimes several times during important phases of their development, test them individually later and, if possible, in comparison and again when they are on the market as used boats. We portray special boats, take them out on cruises and take you, the reader, on board with us.

In this issue alone, there is talk of 13 different yachts, sometimes presented on a larger scale, sometimes on a smaller scale. The range extends from the 50-year-old dinghy cruiser Fam to the promising new sports boat Junda KII and the second-hand Beneteau Evasion 36.

Dufour 41: The Yacht That Changed the Rules of the Game

The Dufour 41 has become one of the most remarkable yachts of the last few years. Interparus will tell you how the Dufour 41 changed the approach to yacht design

Expectations from Dufour 41 and reality

What do we imagine when we think of a 40-foot (12-meter) yacht? A well-equipped deck and a compact interior with two, maximum three cabins and one or two bathrooms. This was the image of the average sailing yacht until Dufour Yachts unveiled its new creation, the Dufour 41, in 2023.

Fortunately, the Dufour 41 is a rare case where reality exceeds all expectations. In 2017, the new hulls of the Sun Odyssey and Oceanis series from Beneteau Group had a similar effect on the industry. Back then, yachtsmen were amazed by the large interior spaces and equipment that had not yet been seen on yachts of similar dimensions. Dufour Yachts decided to follow suit, creating unique boats that have no analogues.

The only thing that almost no one had managed to do before the 41 was to fit more cabins and bathrooms into the hull of a 40-foot monohull. Today, the Dufour 41 is the only boat in its class that can offer as many as 4 cabins, two of which have full double beds.

How did you manage to achieve this layout?

The new layout options are the result of many hours of brainstorming between designers and engineers. In the case of the Dufour 41, two legendary personalities took on the task of “expanding horizons”: architect Umberto Felci and designer Luca Ardizio. For Ardizio, this boat was the first in the context of collaboration with the Dufour Yachts shipyard.

Umberto was responsible for the naval architecture of the Dufour 41. He is the author of the entire visual style of the 41 model. The angular lines of the hull and wheelhouse are adjacent to the smooth transitions of the deck - all according to the precepts of modern design. And although this style has many opponents, it is worth admitting that the Dufour 41 looks very impressive. As a result, Felci came up with one of the widest boats in this size category.

Luca Ardizio was very involved in the design of the interior spaces. According to Nicolas Beranger, Dufour's sales director, Luca contributed greatly to the interior design. It was he who was able to find the necessary space inside the boat to accommodate as many as 4 cabins.

However, Dufour 41 is precisely the result of the joint work of two famous designers. It is impossible to single out one - each did his part of the work and successfully coped with it.

Dufour 41 Deck

As with other Dufour Yachts models, comfort and ergonomics are at the forefront. The deck is a vast space where you can relax quietly at anchor or engage in active sailing. The deck layout differs depending on the yacht version – Easy, Ocean or Performance.

All three versions differ in the presence or absence of additional front sails and a set of winches. The Easy version is designed for lovers of rich cruises and leisurely walks along the coastline. There is nothing superfluous in it, it is a full-fledged house on the water with all the amenities. There are only two winches on the cockpit in this version.

The Ocean version will appeal to fans of active recreation under sail. In this version, you can additionally install a staysail or genoa, as well as an asymmetric spinnaker; two winches are installed in the cockpit, and two additional winches are on the roof of the wheelhouse.

The Performance version was created with extreme sports enthusiasts in mind. The Performance offers a more classic sail rig and more responsive handling, which is perfect for regattas. This version does not have a cockpit table, but the boom is almost half a meter (55 centimeters) longer, which makes the mainsail on the Performance larger than on other versions. The Performance also has 4 main winches.

In any configuration, the Dufour 41 has two steering wheels with navigation panels in front of them. The cockpit has comfortable sofas and a folding table. Behind the steering wheels there are lifting benches, behind which there is a passage to the water. The yacht also has a transom folding bathing platform.

Interior Dufour 41

So, let's finally talk about the main highlight of the yacht - the layout and interior spaces. The entire interior can be described in one capacious phrase: classic Italian yacht style. An abundance of natural light due to skylights, pleasant interior lighting, light and casual colors of the furniture trim - Dufour 41 has absorbed all the best from its predecessors.

The saloon greets us with a galley on the starboard side and a large dining area on the port side. The galley has a large work surface, as well as a sufficient number of lockers and cabinets for storing dishes and tools. The dining area is an E-shaped sofa and a folding table. According to the good old yachting tradition, the table can be lowered to create additional sleeping places.

Right next to the ladder leading to the saloon, on the starboard and port side, there is a toilet and shower. Depending on the configuration, the bathroom can be either combined or separate. An additional combined bathroom is included in the layout with one forward master cabin.

By default, the Dufour 41 has two aft cabins with double beds. According to the layout, there can be either one master cabin with a separate head in the bow, or two more forward cabins, also with double beds.

There are plenty of lockers and storage space on board. Probably the only real drawback of the Dufour 41 interior is the lack of a full-fledged navigation table. However, this nuance is easily corrected - due to the large interior spaces, an improvised navigation station can be installed almost anywhere.

Specifications Dufour 41

Dufour 41 has truly become one of the most remarkable yachts of 2023. This boat managed to combine not only a rich interior layout, but also high performance and responsive control. Dufour 41 is a family cruiser in the best sense of the word, which will give you a sea of unforgettable emotions. In this price and size segment, no yacht can offer as much interior space as Dufour 41.

umberto felci yacht design

Performance and functionality are the cornerstones of Umberto Felci’s designs

“I look for the essence of every single project I work on. We live in a world in which image, be it of a person or a thing, seems to have become vital. The only important thing. The only truth. I, however, believe that image is necessary when there is no essence. In other words, it becomes a necessity in that it fills that gap”. Umberto Felci , who co-founded Felci Yacht Design in 1998 with Lorenzo Giovannozzi , sums up a philosophy that has influenced his designs from the earliest days of his career.

img_8091

The long list of boats he’s penned all meld the emotional with the functional: “I try to really meticulously unpack everything until I get to the very core of what I am designing. I really focus on getting to its essence. I constantly strive to get away from futility, trends and fashions”. Felci Yacht Design is one of the few Italian studios capable of giving the legendary international outfits a run for their money, its work spanning everything from racers to one designs, 100’ cruiser-racers as well as series for the likes of Dufour, Cantiere del Pardo, Ice Yacht, Delta Yachts.

libera-del-garda-clan-des-team-2002

Felci’s personal background as a competitive yachtsman, his experience with Moro di Venezia, Raul Gardini’s 1992 America’s Cup challenge r, and, of course, the revolutionary 1993 MiniTransat TèSalt all laid the foundations for his studio’s solidity and reputation. Composite structural engineering, CFD and VPP, full 3D modelling and an ability to follow a project through from the design to construction completion stages are the signatures of the studio. But that’s far from the end of the story. “We have the tools and experience to do the work of a marketing department too. We can pinpoint areas of innovation potential in a product. For Dufour, for example, we reinvented the style of the Performance and Grand Large series by working on their philosophy and produced boats that delivered serious results.

umberto felci yacht design

But we never lost sight of our own goal which is always and ever to create functional boats. That’s not a simple process. It’s all too easy to give into the pressure for modernity and whatever is trending but much more difficult to separate the contemporary from the merely pointless. Hence we are constantly observing, researching and keeping a critical eye out. When you do all that, the results speak for themselves”. It’s a long process that Felci is keen to point out goes beyond the nautical. “It embraces various areas of design and architecture because whatever you’re penning – a boat, a home, an object – is still aimed at people who will be looking for both functionality and emotion from it”.

ice33-mataran

These two factors, however, present their own challenges is a factor of the technology used, safety, its seakeeping abilities and the comfort of its spaces. The emotion is what the boat communicates unfiltered. The instant message you get because its design, simple lines, are the identifying force of its stylistic code,” explains Felci. “To me innovation is not about inventing something absolutely new but an evolution that improves the quality of a product. To innovate, to allow the creative act to emerge, you need one vital ingredient: passion, huge passion. And we all meld that great passion with constant, in-depth scientific research. That’s what our work is all about”.

Dufour 41, voilier de l’année ? En savoir plus sur ce modèle

dufour-41-voilier-de-lannee-en-savoir-plus-sur-ce-modele
