1989 CS30 Classic Club Racer Cruiser This very popular production boat is the most numerous of the Canadian Sailcraft (CS) fibreglass yachts produced in Ontario. In the first year, 90 were produced and about 500 overall.
The CS 30 is perfectly suited to local BC waters for a couple, young family or solo cruiser. This boat is fully equipped for coastal cruising. Created by the well-known yacht designer Tony Castro, this light displacement yacht is responsive and quick. Designed as a Club Racer, the CS 30 is fast on the racecourse, and fully appointed for cruising. The current owner, having returned from a 10-year circumnavigation on a larger offshore boat, chose this smaller performance cruiser for local sailing. Upgrades to the boat for a 2023 cruise to Alaska and return to the Pacific Northwest include: 1. New 3 cylinder Beta 20 hp diesel, (total hours 360) with low vibration Signet coupling (2022) 2. New 3 blade, low profile, low drag fixed Sailor propellor (2022) 3. New Raymarine Instrumentation Boat Speed, Depth, Wind Direction and Speed with integrated VMG and true and apparent wind (2021) 4. New halyards for main, genoa and spinnaker and other running rigging (2021) 5. Re-rigged for single handed sailing with all lines run aft to cockpit, including 10 new Spinlock clutches, relocated console winches (2021) 6. New anchor windlass, switches and controls (2022) 7. New Bruce anchor and 40 meters of inch chain anchor rode spliced to 75 meters of new nylon laid anchor line (2021) 8. Two new sealed flooded lead acid batteries doubling capacity - total now 3 120 ah house batteries, 1 starter battery (2021) 9. New Victron Energy battery monitor (2021) 10. Two new Solar panels and controller 150 watt capacity (2022) 11. New fridge/freezer and compressor (2021) 12. New engine bus cabin heater (run off engine freshwater cooling system) (2022) 13. New dodger and Bimini cockpit enclosure (Sunbrella) (2022) 14. New behind seat shelves for handy tool storage 15. Spinnaker and spinnaker pole and controls (2022) 16. New Mainsail (2024)
Equipment: Fresh and Salt Water pressure System: 30 gallon water tank, 12 V pressure pump supplying hot and cold faucets in the galley and head sinks, integrated hot-water tank heated by engine freshwater cooling circuit and 120 V shore power for hot-water at the dock and underway. 12 V pressure saltwater pump supplied to galley sink to extend freshwater supply. Sailing system: Masthead sloop with double spreader rig, baby stay and fixed forestay and backstay. New Mainsail, #3 jib, genoa and spinnaker. Running rigging run to cockpit for easy single-handed sailing. Centre boom sheeting on cabin top traveller forward of dodger and cockpit. Spinnaker pole and mast track with fore guy and toping lift. Propane System: Gimbaled two burner galley stove with oven, BBQ mounted on pushpin, two 11-pound propane tanks with 12 volt remote gas shutoff. West Marine VHF 500 DSC marine radio, stereo with speakers in cockpit and main saloon. Diesel cabin heater Spares: Extensive spare parts in custom behind seat storage for easy access Electrical system: o Integrated 12-volt system with 360 amp hours of battery storage in three sealed, flooded lead acid batteries, plus one starter battery, battery isolator switch, Victron Energy Monitor. System charged by 150 watts of solar panels, engine alternator and/or battery charger on shore power. o Integrated 120 volt system with shore power cables, breaker panel with main and individual circuit breakers for distributed 120 V outlets, hot water heater, and battery charger

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Designed to determine if a boat has blue water capability. The CSF compares beam with displacement since excess beam contributes to capsize and heavy displacement reduces capsize vulnerability.
