The Tampa Yacht & Country Club was founded in 1904 by the leading business and professional men of the city of Tampa. Three clubhouses have occupied this property on Ballast Point. The first building was constructed in 1905 at a cost of $7,000 and it was destroyed by fire on December 14, 1929. The second building was built in 1930 and burned down in December 1938. The Tampa Yacht & Country Club is an exclusive private club located on Hillsborough Bay. Founded in 1904, the club is a member owned "family-oriented" private club known for fine dining and entertainment . The Tampa Yacht & Country Club is located on the western shore of Hillsborough Bay, immediatly south of the Ballast Point Pier. A heading of 290 degrees from ship channel marker #25 will take you to the marina entrance. Follow the markers north of the north-south breakwall to enter the marina. The Dockmaster monitors channel 68 and is on duty 24 hours, 7 days a week.

This Members Only Yacht Club must be doing something right, I'm told the waiting list to join is 2 years long. The prime rib was the best I've had in Florida. I asked for medium rare and the meat was pink all the way through. Steak was thick and juicy. Forgot to take a picture. Service was impeccable.

Service was a 10/10. They were very professional and accommodating. The staff were attentive and helpful. The drinks were excellent. The food was fresh and light. So many areas to relax and enjoy yourself. A great experience.

Total garbage. Rude wait staff and every patron tries to sell me insurance. How unprofessional.

After being a member of years and having a large event there last year I have really rather enjoyed being a part of this particular Country Club. Even thought I believe to be one of the youngest members the other patrons have always been warm and excellent to introduce and converse with. The facilities include a gym, pool, horse stables, tennis, restaurant and optional dining areas for different dress codes. The gym is limited in their equipment but it seems to be doing the job. Treadmills and free weights and the occasional classes are always available. The staff at the gym are beyond wonderful. The tennis courts surrounding the inside gym are always full of matches and since I live across the street I can hear the tennis balls from sun up to sun down. The pool area is beautifully maintained and offers a snacks and adult beverages at the window of the main building. I must admit, the pool is where you'll find me mostly. Can't beat a heated pool this size. The restaurant is immaculate and always bustling. The food needs a little tending too, it always seems to have "Yacht Club Sauce," on everything so dubbed by what we call it. It all starts tasting the same but the specials are usually something you can't go wrong with. I highly recommend joining. At the moment they are offering fee options over a year or so that appeal to a younger audience on a tighter budget instead of an all at once fee.

Been to many weddings and events here over the years. (My own wedding reception was here 20 years ago!) beautiful venue for special events and the food is always delicious. It is a private club so you have to know a member to go here or hold an event here. Great service as well!

Bring your partner and compete in a pursuit race on one of three courses. The specific course will be chosen on the day based on the wind direction and strength, and will be indicated by the flag pole. For more details, please refer to the abbreviated Notice of Race/Sailing Instructions (NOR/SI).

The Island-2-Island Race is a new race co-sponsored with the Venice Yacht Club.

This Boat-of-the-Year event for DIYC encourages participation from veteran racers to casual cruisers looking to check out the racing scene.  There are divisions for everyone with choices in Spinnaker, Racer-Cruiser, Multi-Hull, and Cruising.  This one-day event features Hillsborough Bay Drop-Mark races for Spinnaker Divisions and a Distance course for the other Divisions.  After an afternoon of racing, DIYC hosts our traditional adult Halloween party.  Costumes are strongly encouraged for the awards party – for a separate competition of course.  The race is only half the fun.

New and old sailors alike gather on our beautiful Hillsborough Bay for a tradition unlike any other. Davis Islands' "Full Moon Series" continues our popular weeknight racing through the winter months. To join a boat, visit the yacht club bar on Thursday night and let the staff know you are "crew looking for boat." Whether you have experience or not, invited guests are welcome to visit and participate to learn more about sailing. The club bar is open (accepting credit cards) and pub grub and meals are available (members receive discounted rates). Racing begins at 1900.

Provide the women of the Tampa Bay area an opportunity to compete against each other with an all-female crew and socialize after the racing.

Notice of Race and Registration

Egmont Key Race dates back to 1935 and is the oldest running sailboat race on the west coast of Florida. It was created as a warm-up race for the Havana Race. The 65-mile-long course takes racers around the key and back to DIYC. We also offer a 35-mile short course that stays inside the key for cruising and small spinnaker boats. The winner of the long course is awarded the perpetual Houston Wall Trophy.

Come out for this ancient traditional single-handed race!   

The regatta is open only to members of DIYC, with no entry fee.

Boats shall register with the RC at 0800-0830.

For the Old Shoe class, boats must meet one of the following conditions:

• WFPHRF base RLC Cruising rating > 200
• Be at least 30’ LOA and displacement > 10,000 lbs.
• Written approval of the race committee

Boats not meeting one of the above conditions shall compete in the New Shoe class.

The annual Thanksgiving Regatta, one of the largest events at DIYC, is coming again this fall. Opti's, 420's and ILCA/Lasers will be racing. Please join us for a great way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

This is a one-day regatta with drop-mark races for spinnaker boats and a distance race for others.  All spinnaker B and C boats on the Drop-mark Course will compete for the perpetual Frank Selph Memorial Trophy.  Frank was an avid MORC supporter and the trophy is awarded in his honor.  This event is part of the DIYC BOTY Series and the Suncoast BOTY Series.

All boats up to 24 feet come on out for this 12th edition of a fun event!   Also known as "Revenge of the Race Committee", this regatta is sure to sharpen your boat-handling skills.

Race Documents

Dedicated to the honor of all Davis Island Yacht Club past Commodores, this two-day regatta kicks off the new year with intense racing for two days. The best come out to set the tone for the second half of the season. This is a BOTY regatta. A limited breakfast menu will be available at 9 am.

The ATP Race loosely follows our DIYC series formula of starting and finishing at DIYC. Part of the DIYC BOTY Series. Limited breakfast menu will be available.

“Come Hell or high water” was the phrase used by our first regatta chair, Brian Malone. This distance race is held in Hillsborough Bay, but don’t assume it is just an afternoon cruise. Test your navigation skills and plan to race even if the weather pipes up. This time of year is prone to fronts. In the internet age, most race decisions are made at the bar watching radar. You can plan to race this one to hone your heavy weather skills, so don’t shy away if there is a blow.  Part of the DIYC BOTY Series.  Limited breakfast menu will be available.

Annual Admirals Cup Regatta for all A-Cats.

Similar to the traditions of the Morgan Invasion, the Tampa Bay Hospice Cup appeals to both cruisers and racers. In addition to the traditional Morgan Invasion fleets, the regatta also features open non-Morgan fleets for PHRF, Multi-hulls, and a “Just-for-Fun” casual fleet. The committee also plans landside activities for supporters who’d like to be a part of the event but who don’t care to race. All proceeds will benefit Tampa Bay area Hospice organizations, which offer comprehensive hospice and palliative care, caregiver education, individual and group counseling, spiritual support and many other programs to those it serves regardless of race, age, faith, diagnosis or financial circumstances. Part of the DIYC BOTY Series.  Limited breakfast menu will be available.

Grab a partner and join us for double-handed race. The goal is not to win but to still be talking after the race!

We are looking forward to hosting a great race weekend to share with clubs around the South here at Davis Island Yacht Club.  There is a maximum of 50 competitors in each of the Green and RWB fleets and a max of 25 in 420 and 25 in Laser.

The race from Tampa to Naples (not Ft. Myers) takes place every year on Memorial Day weekend, marking the end of DIYC's Boat of the Year series and our regatta calendar. Yacht Club is getting tax deal

The St. Petersburg Yacht Club has been saving thousands of dollars in property taxes because of a series of agreements between the private club and the Pinellas County Property Appraiser's Office. One of the agreements specifies that officials with the Property Appraiser's Office never will increase the Yacht Club's assessment by more than 7 percent each year, said David Zachem, Appraiser Jim Smith's deputy for appraisals.

Current property appraiser's officials discovered the agreement recently when Yacht Club officials complained that their estimated tax bill had increased by 21 percent over last year's, Zachem said Wednesday.

He said Yacht Club officials enclosed a copy of the agreement _ dated July 14, 1986 _ in a letter to Zachem dated Aug. 17. The Yacht Club on Bayshore Drive has appealed this year's assessment of $1.6-million. A hearing is scheduled for Monday.

According to county records, the land under the Yacht Club is valued at $30 per square foot. But the land is assessed at half the market value. That amounts to a tax savings of $24,200 in 1990. Further, the Yacht Club building is assessed at 75 percent of market value, records show. That amounts to a savings of $7,400.

Records do not indicate why an agreement was struck on the 7 percent cap in assessment increases and why the Yacht Club is allowed to save 25 percent on the value of its building.

Smith, who took office in January 1989 _ three years after the agreement was reached _ said he does not understand why the Yacht Club has been allowed to benefit from such an undervaluation. He said his office will investigate the tax deal before next year's assessment.

"I'm at a loss," Smith said. "Why didn't they just declare the Yacht Club economically obsolete and take them off the tax roll entirely," he quipped.

John M. Schrader, the club's general manager, would not discuss the club's assessment Wednesday. The club's lawyer, Stephen Chumbris, did not return phone calls.

But Ronald Schultz, Pinellas property appraiser in 1986 and now chief deputy for Property Appraiser Charles Allen in Citrus County, said he believes the land was appraised at half the market value because it could not be sold by the Yacht Club.

The city of St. Petersburg conveyed the land to the Yacht Club, but only as long as it remains a non-profit organization _ and a yacht club, according to records submitted by the club to the county.

The so-called "'rider" attached to the deed requires that the land revert to the city in the event it is no longer being used as a yacht club. The Yacht Club has maintained that the rider renders the land essentially unmarketable, Schultz said.

"It cannot be marketed," he said.

Schultz said he thought the agreement of July 1986 was binding on the Property Appraiser's Office only for the 1986 and 1987 tax years, which would leave Smith's office free to increase the assessment above 7 percent.

Schultz said the 1986 agreement was the result of an appeal by the Yacht Club concerning that year's assessment. He said his deputy struck the deal.

Setting a 7 percent limit on future assessments would be "fundamentally illegal and immoral," Schultz added.

But Smith said the Yacht Club has argued that the 7 percent limit still applies.

Jim Matthews, an appraiser specialist with the state Department of Revenue in Tallahassee, said his office might look at the series of agreements, which appeared to be improper.

"That really gets my attention," Matthews said of the agreements. "I'd be interested to know why it was assessed at half the market value. If the facts bear everything out, we might want to take a closer look at it."

The Tampa Bay Rays are making baseball history with this week's visit to Cuba.

It marks only the second time a major league team has traveled to the island nation since Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. More importantly, the trip coincides with a diplomatic sojourn by President Barack Obama, who plans to attend the game. It's the first visit by an American president to Cuba since Calvin Coolidge in 1928. The contingent representing MLB on the trip includes commissioner Rob Manfred, Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Joe Torre, players union executive director Tony Clark and former Yankees star Derek Jeter .

Tuesday's game is not being contested without controversy. ESPN's Dan Le Batard explains the opposing perspective in this column .

Nevertheless, the Rays' visit represents a significant event for American sports in the international arena, and with that in mind, we assemble a list of similar landmark moments:

April 1896: First modern Olympics

The athletic tradition of ancient Greece was resurrected more than 1,500 years after being discontinued in the fourth century A.D. Fourteen nations were represented by 241 athletes in the 1896 Games. The first gold medal went to James Connolly of the United States for winning the triple jump. The most decorated medalist was gymnast Hermann Weingartner of Germany, who won three golds, two silvers and one bronze. Americans won gold in nine of the 12 events in track and field.

January-February 1924: First Winter Olympics

Sports such as figure skating and ice hockey were previously contested as part of the Summer Olympics, but that changed with the introduction of the Winter Games in Chamonix, France. The most decorated medalist was speed skater Clas Thunberg of Finland, who won three golds, one silver and one bronze. Charles Jewtraw was the only American to capture a gold medal, winning the 500 meters in speed skating. The U.S. took silver in ice hockey, losing 6-1 to a Canada team that outscored its opponents by a combined 122-3.

July 1930: First World Cup

Soccer was contested at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics, but it wasn't until Uruguay played host to the inaugural World Cup that the beautiful game had a global stage all its own. Uruguay, having captured the first two Olympic championships, defeated Argentina 4-2 before a crowd of 60,000-plus in the tournament final at Montevideo. Argentina's Guillermo Stabile scored a tournament-high eight goals among the 13-team field. Pedro Cea scored five goals to lead Uruguay. The U.S. lost 6-1 to Argentina in the semifinals.

August 1936: Summer Olympics in Berlin

The Nazi government of Germany intended to use the 1936 Olympics as a propaganda festival for the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. Instead, those Games are best remembered for the achievements of African-American sprinter Jesse Owens, who won gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump and 4x100-meter relay. Including Owens' four golds, the United States won 25 medals in track and field -- nine more than the host nation. With the onset of World War II, the Olympic Games wouldn't be held again until 1948.

April 1971: Ping-pong diplomacy

The United States table-tennis team was competing at the world championships in Japan when it was invited to the People's Republic of China. The offer was viewed as an opportunity to thaw relations between two nations that didn't share diplomatic ties. Nine athletes and a handful of associates and journalists became the first Americans allowed to visit China since its 1949 communist revolution, as the team toured and played exhibition matches. President Richard Nixon visited China in 1972, and the U.S. officially recognized the People's Republic of China in 1979.

March 21, 1980: Olympic boycott

In response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States would boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Dozens of other nations joined the abstention, although the action didn't provide the intended result of a Soviet military withdrawal. Four years later, the U.S.S.R. and many of its allies subsequently boycotted the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Cable television magnate Ted Turner helped thaw relations between the two factions by arranging the 1986 Goodwill Games in Moscow.

November 1990: Suns vs. Jazz in Japan

The NBA held its first regular-season games outside North America when the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz met for two games at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym. Tom Chambers scored 38 points to lead the Suns to a 119-96 win in the opener. Karl Malone scored 29 points for Utah in its 102-101 win the following night. Attendance for both games was 10,111.

November 1991: First Women's World Cup

Twelve nations were represented in China when FIFA first held a women's tournament for its signature event, although the tournament wouldn't officially be granted the "World Cup" title until 1995. The United States defeated Norway 2-1 in the final on Nov. 30 in Guangzhou. American forward Michelle Akers led all scorers with 10 goals in the tournament.

June-July 1992: The Dream Team

The 1992 United States Olympic men's basketball team arguably represents the greatest assembly of talent ever in any sport. Eleven future Hall of Famers, highlighted by Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan , appeared on the Dream Team roster. The team went 8-0 in the Olympics, winning by an average of 43.8 points en route to the gold medal. That performance marked the tipping point for the worldwide popularity of basketball. The number of foreign players in the NBA ballooned in subsequent years, and by 2002, the U.S. lost its global superiority by finishing sixth at the world championships.

August 1996: Mets vs. Padres in Mexico

In the first regular-season MLB games held outside the United States and Canada, the New York Mets and San Diego Padres faced off in a three-game series in Monterrey, Mexico. Fernando Valenzuela earned the victory in the series opener for San Diego, and Ken Caminiti hit three home runs as the Padres won two of the three games. MLB has subsequently held regular-season games in Japan and Australia.

October 1997: Canucks vs. Ducks in Japan

The first NHL regular-season games held outside North America were played when the Vancouver Canucks and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim opened the 1997-98 season at Yoyogi Arena in Tokyo. The teams split two games in a series that preceded the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, by three months.

March 28, 1999: Orioles play in Cuba

The Baltimore Orioles became the first MLB team to visit Cuba since Castro came to power when they arrived to play against a national all-star team. Baltimore won the game 3-2 in 11 innings. Charles Johnson hit a two-run homer, and Harold Baines delivered the winning RBI. The Cuban team reciprocated the trip on May 3, 1999, defeating the Orioles 12-6 in a game interrupted by protests at Camden Yards.

Oct. 2, 2005: 49ers vs. Cardinals in Mexico

The NFL's first regular-season game held outside the United States was contested in Week 4 of 2005, when the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals squared off at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The attendance figure of 103,467 set a record, since broken, for an NFL regular-season game as the Cardinals won 31-14. The NFL subsequently has held regular-season games in England and Canada, and the league expressed interest Monday in staging contests in China, Germany and Brazil .

March 2006: First World Baseball Classic

Baseball introduced its own version of the World Cup a decade ago with an inaugural global tournament featuring professional players. Games were played in Japan, Puerto Rico and the continental United States. Japan captured the championship with a 10-6 win over Cuba in San Diego. The U.S. failed to advance to the championship round after losses to South Korea and Mexico in pool play.

Russian horse racing gets up a gallop

Russia is in the middle of a horse racing boom, with the number of horse racing clubs in the Moscow region tripling over the last 5 years.

It’s attracted investors eager to diversify away from their main business but many say it’s more of a hobby than a money maker.

After senior government officials and tycoons, the fashion for horses has spread to spread to Russia’s upper-middle class. Of course the most popular breeds of horse here are not Akhal-Teke or Arabs, but these clients are ready to pay $300 thousand for a good trotter.

To meet demand, stables are mushrooming in the Moscow region offering training services and accommodation for rent.

Bitza is one of the largest horse racing clubs in Moscow with a stable for 240 horses. The head of the club, Anatoly Isachkin, says Russia still lacks professional trainers and many owners prefer to keep their horses in Europe.

“There are investors now who have bought 15 horses and keep them in Europe. It’s 50% cheaper to keep your horse there than in Russia. At our club it will cost you 1 thousand euro to rent a loose box, in Germany for example you will get the same level of services for 400 euro.”

Renting and training account for 70% of a horse club’s revenues but many owners say it’s far from a real business.

With a mid-size stable costing around $7 million and an average monthly rate to keep one horse standing at $1 thousand it may take up to 10 years for the stable to turn a profit. Some stable owners say they do it as a hobby apart from their main business, others for the pleasure of watching their children doing this.

Alla has her own horse and trains three privately-owned ones. She says Russians are buying horses mainly in Germany and the Netherlands. They are usually 50% more expensive that Russian ones – and not always worth the money.

“I hear very often that it’s very hard to train the horses bought in Germany. And not always does the horse prove its class.”

74 horse breeders are operating in Russia but few Russian horses are trained for large championships. Russian breeders prefer to sell a horse abroad as soon as the price reaches $50 thousand.

Occasionally a Russian horse is sold for half a million once it reaches the level of the world championships.

Breeders are not willing to take that risk. They can invest thousands of dollars training a horse, over three or four years, and – if it breaks one leg – both the breeder, and the horse, can lose everything.
