One of Sydney's most exclusive private clubs, perched bang smack on Sydney Harbour... visited by a social who's who of members. Endless posh club facilities - which you can't enjoy unless you get signed in by a member. Get past the gate, and it feels kinda French Riviera outside on the deck... lounging around on plush white couches... next to the water festooned with gleaming luxury vessels. Down a little too much Veuve, stroll along the pier and make like a millionaire as you consider you're next floating investment. Just try and narrow it down to one. Then return to the bar and drink a little more Veuve... cool off in the harbourside pool and grab a leisurely lunch in the uber chic restaurant. A relatively recent restaurant fit out by Mike McCann of Concrete Blonde fame feels timeless, elegant and a little bit Colorado cabin on the water come winter with timber panelled walls and open fireplaces. Of course, the panoramic views of Sydney Harbour is a constant reminder that you are not in fact in Colorado... but the contrast works well nevertheless. Summer Sundays seafood buffets are a must. How many prawns can one consume in a single sitting? Only one way to find out. There once were jet skis on offer for endless Harbour fun, until Bob Carr put a lid on them. Cheers Bob. Well, back to the bar then I guess...
A truly beautiful venue, the RMYC at Point Piper is one of the more exclusive yacht clubs in Sydney. It can be tricky to get through the doors here as it is members only (unless you're attending a function of course) but there are ways to get around this. For example, the club has reciprocal rights to other RMYCs in Sydney that don't have as stringent membership policies. Once you're in you'll take the lift to the harbour front restaurant which is done in casual chic décor (mostly white, of course). It's my family tradition to have Christmas lunch here. Each year there is a fantastic three course set menu which always leaves you feeling full and jolly like you should on Christmas. There is nothing better than taking a stroll along the pier after lunch to ogle the boats docked here. If you fancy a swim there is an outdoor pool you can dip in and sun chairs that you can recline and relax in. Overall this place is a fantastic venue for a special occasion, you just might need to sneak in!

THE RMYC: A COLOURFUL AND EXCITING HISTORY
The Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay is not only a Club of distinction, but a Club with a rich history of growth and significance in the Pittwater region. Originally the Club was formed as a branch of the Motor Yacht Club of NSW Rose Bay, which was purchased early in 1927 in Horseshoe Cove, Newport (still the existing site).
His Majesty King George V conferred the right for the Motor Yacht of NSW Rose Bay, to use the prefix “Royal”. Subsequently the Broken Bay branch became the Royal Motor Yacht Club. The official opening of our first clubhouse, boat shed, wharf and slipway took place on 17th March 1928. The original clubhouse was built close to the seawall and was enjoyed for many years by members and the local boating fraternity. However, a fire brought forth new ideas and planning. In their re-thinking, Club executives decided the second clubhouse should be built further back, thus allowing cars to be parked between the seawall and the building alignment. In 1939 the land on the eastern side was bought for $200, thereby increasing the overall waterfrontage to approximately 500 feet. In 1942 with Australia heavily involved in the Pacific War, pleasure boating was curtailed because of petrol rationing. Many of the sizeable cruisers were confiscated for the Navy and saw service with the Naval Auxiliary Patrol. In 1947/48, the RMYC Broken Bay, like so many other organisations was “taking stock” after the War years. Progress was paramount and the Club was on the move again. Building and improvements continued gradually. On 15th March 1959, the swimming pool was opened and membership had grown to 354 active members. The Club was fast becoming known as the “family Club” where members could relax, swim and boat with family and friends. The RMYC Broken Bay was now one of the outstanding landmarks on Pittwater. A new lounge deck and bar was constructed and opened in 1964, which extended the clubhouse further. 1966 was perhaps the beginning of many mammoth constructions. Commodore Alan Leslie (Life Member 1970) could see only future growth and development for the Club and many successful projects were undertaken during his four years of leadership. The building of a new clubhouse started in April 1966 and was built around the old clubhouse, thus preserving the past with its fond memories. The official opening took place on 17th August 1968 and was performed by Lady Cutler, the wife of Patron and NSW State Governor, Sir Roden Cutler.
Boating activity was steadily increasing in New South Wales, particularly in Sydney. The demand for cruisers, runabouts and sailboats was astronomical, as was the demand for marina berths, dry storage and moorings. The southern marina with 91 berths was built in 1966. In July 1978, the first pile was driven for the western marina with 103 berths. Through the mid to late 1980’s, additional parking was created and the entrance road re-routed to allow construction of the Garden Forecourt and BBQ area. The 1990’s saw many improvements to Club facilities. A Club Divisional boat was purchased, the Club lounge balcony with its magnificient views was built and the Garden Forecourt was refurbished with a new BBQ and retractable awning. The fuel wharf adjoining the car park was rebuilt, along with the installation of attractive planter boxes, stainless steel handrails, game fishing weigh station, stainless steel flag pole and relocating the Starters’ Tower.
On the 8th October 2000, a fire caused extensive water and smoke damage throughout the clubhouse. A $1 million refurbishment program saw a new lounge bar with other areas of the Club being replaced as original. In 2001, the new Garden Bar and Brasserie was opened, complementing the modern, all-weather design of the Garden Forecourt. With a major marina development completed in 2004, the Club now provides 218 marina pens and 49 swing moorings. Currently there are plans for another marina upgrade with 40 new marina berths to be added.
Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay continues to evolve to meet the ever changing needs of its members and guests.

The Beachouse at Point Piper Weddings
If you’re looking for a Sydney harbourside wedding venue that combines luxury with beach chic, you’ll find it in Rose Bay . Sitting on the waterfront, within the Royal Motor Yacht Club, is the elegant Zest Beachouse at Point Piper — don’t be fooled by its charming name though, this so-called beach house is as stunning as the suburb it’s positioned in.
With harbour views, award-winning catering and a modern design , this luxurious, centrally-located venue is a must for couples wanting an elegant, memorable wedding day by the water.
The Scene at Zest Beachouse at Point Piper Sydney
Zest Beachouse at Point Piper is a modern, sophisticated wedding venue in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, specifically, the beautiful Rose Bay. As Sydneysiders will know all too well, this posh suburb is synonymous with luxury; boasting excellent shopping, colourful restaurants, trendy bars, and incredible bay views — something this harbourside venue has in spades.
Boasting a prime location right on the waterfront, within the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Zest Beachouse offers breathtaking, elevated views of the nearby Point Piper Marina and Bay — you’ll be amazed by the vibrant blue water and clear, sandy beach.
The Rose Bay wedding venue plays to its surroundings, nodding to the native beauty of the area in its two event spaces, The Pacific Room and The Commodores Room. The former is the larger of the two spaces, and is the more relaxed, aesthetically-speaking. Here, you’ll find an oyster shell feature wall, woven furniture, rustic wooden tables and neutral tones — it’s perfect for an elegant sunset wedding by the water.
The second function space, The Commodores Room, is perfect for intimate occasions, and is more sophisticated than its larger counterpart. It features mahogany walls, wooden bookcases, handsome armchairs, a roaring fireplace and mood lighting — it’s very dignified, moody and classically romantic. Both function spaces offer impressive, breathtaking views of this charming, small pocket of Sydney.
With the venue a scenic 20-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay and trendy Bondi Beach just 10 minutes away, this central, elegant venue is a must-have for couples wanting a sophisticated, harbourside wedding day.
Zest Beachouse at Point Piper Sydney Wedding Ceremonies
Couples may choose to have their wedding ceremony in their hired room at Zest Beachouse at Point Piper, with the venue’s two event spaces offering couples beautiful, indoor ceremony options . The venue’s two options are elegant, modern and, best of all, completely safe from the elements — couples needn’t worry about bad weather on their wedding day at Zest Beachouse.
The first option, The Pacific Room, overlooks stunning Rose Bay, offering your guests a beautiful water view. With enough space to bring in an arch, and room for up to 200 guests, this ceremony location is ideal for larger guest lists. Alternatively, the moody Commodores Room is better suited to host more intimate ceremonies.
There are also plenty of green, open garden spaces in the area for you to host your ceremony off-site and outdoors. Rose Bay Park , located a mere hundred metres from the venue, is a close, quaint outdoor option, with a rustic feel. While a little further away, in Double Bay, the serene and beautiful Blackburn Gardens are an excellent option for nature lovers. This quiet park is brimming with trees, foliage and shrubs, and boasts a sea view, sundial and manicured lawn.
If you’re willing to drive, McKell Park in Darling Point is an ideal location if you’re after a ceremony with a view – your guests are bound to be impressed by the city skyline and stunning waterside scenery. Each of these external venues has a limitation on the amount of guests you can invite, and require a booking from the local council.
Zest Beachouse at Point Piper Sydney Wedding Receptions
Zest Beachouse at Point Piper is a multiple award-winning reception venue, crowned Best Reception Venue at the ABIA Awards in 2018 and 2019 , so it goes without saying this waterfront venue is an ideal place to toast your marriage.
With two wildly different event spaces, a catering team twice named Caterer of the Year (by the Restaurant and Catering Association), premium service and event styling , the sky’s the limit when it comes to designing your reception at Zest Beachouse.
Whether you’d imagined a formal, elegant wedding reception or relaxed, laidback celebration, Zest Beachouse has two function rooms you should know about. The Pacific Room, with its bright, neutral-coloured aesthetic, oyster shell feature wall, and fresh lime wash timber floors, is best suited for larger guest lists.
Contrastingly, The Commodores Room features mahogany walls, a large fireplace and classic bookshelves; it’s perfect for setting a mood. We imagine it as a great lounge area with its own whiskey bar, deep red roses, and flood of candlelight.
Both function spaces offer unobstructed harbour views by day, but after the sun goes down, floor-to-ceiling windows unveil a blanket of city lights , providing guests with a breathtaking view of Rose Bay.
Depending on your chosen wedding package, your guests could be treated to a three-course seated meal, sharing platters or a roving degustation menu — which is quite unique and exciting in itself!
Each dish is prepared thoughtfully by Zest Beachouse’s award-winning catering team using delicious, locally-sourced ingredients to create beautifully presented dishes. As an example, your guests might dine on chargrilled veal tenderloin with potato galette, followed by the layered chocolate delice tart. Lest we forget to mention the flexible, beverage packages available and brilliant whiskey station option.
In addition to scrumptious culinary creations, your wedding package will include styling props like candles, lanterns, cross-back timber chairs, mood lighting and more . From lounge furniture to fairy lights, you’ll have access to all sorts of event décor additions too. As well, this venue includes rigging bars in the ceiling that make hanging floral installations and chandeliers a gorgeous addition to your wedding styling.
Whatever vision you’d dreamed up for your wedding day, the friendly, dedicated team at Zest Beachouse at Point Piper will work with you to create a reception that’s gorgeous, fun and seamless from start to finish.

Point Piper's Most elevated address: Kilmory
Updated: Aug 12, 2019
Related Post: Point Piper Federation - Federation-house.wikispaces.com/Point+Piper+Federation
Kilmory, 6 Wentworth Street, Point Piper
"Squatting on the highest knoll in Point Piper is an enormous house the size of 12 large three-bedroom homes. It has about 50 rooms, panoramic views over Sydney Harbour, a sweeping circular driveway and is set in gardens the size of 10 quarter-acre blocks. Kilmory is a mansion in anyone's language.
Despite its location and size, or maybe because of it, Kilmory lay empty until recently, slowly falling into disrepair. Former owner Rodney Adler had the house on the market for two or three years before eventually it selling to a developer earlier this year.
After ten years of consultation between Woollahra Council, the developer (Byrne Lewis Group), the State Heritage Office, architects and countless other interested parties, the property was converted into 11 luxury homes - seven apartments within the actual house and four new residences in the grounds.
As converted, Kilmory will join a series of palatial harbourside mansions, including Ardenbraught across the road, Gladswood House in Double Bay and, the most recent and high profile of mansion conversions, the 112-room,State Heritage-listed Babworth House in Darling Point, the former family home of Sir Samuel Hordern, as grand old homes which have been given a new lease of life."[1]
"Houses like this are mostly too big for today's market. Buildings like Kilmory can fall into disrepair quite badly and rapidly while waiting for an owner." Therefore, Caroline Pidcock argues that the next best way to preserve them is by their sensitive conversion into apartments.
And they have proved popular with buyers.
Five of Kilmory's seven apartments and two of its houses have already sold, although completion is not due until June 2005(2015)
Prices for Kilmory have so far ranged from $3.5 million to $5.5 million, with the largest apartment still available."
The grand size and scale of the buildings and the apartments are a big drawcard for buyers. Kilmory apartments range from 280-400 sq m and Babworth House's from about 300-550 sq m.
And unlike the mansion conversions in the1960s and '70s, the emphasis is now on preserving and restoring important heritage features.
Apartments in the Babworth and Kilmory developments feature
high ornate ceilings,
extensive oak panelling,
slate roofs and copper guttering.
Contemporary lifestyles are incorporated in the heated swimming pools, private lifts, and three-car garages.
The Royal Australian Institute of Architects NSW president, Caroline Pidcock, says conversions present a viable option for increasing the density of a suburb without changing its character, and offer another housing option for people who want to downsize within their local area.
"A lot of these mansions have rooms with fantastic proportions that feel fabulous to be in,"she says, "Owners can enjoy all of that without having a vast house to maintain and afford. It allows people to remain in their community."[2]
Kilmory is the largest site on the Point Piper peninsula and the last of that suburb’s grand estates.
The property has exceptional local heritage significance and is listed as a heritage item in Woollahra Local Environmental Plan 1995.
Kilmory is on the highest part of Point Piper. Because of this elevated position the building and its landscaped grounds can be seen from areas in Vaucluse, Rose Bay and Darling Point.[15]
The house occupies a prominent and highly visible position on the site. From parts of Wentworth Street, it presents a striking and dominating form against an uninterrupted skyline. This elevated position also provides the house and the upper landscaped areas with expansive views of Sydney Harbour and the northern foreshore.
"Kilmory", 6 Wentworth Street, Point Piper was commandeered by the military during WW2 from Sir Alexander MacCormick to establish Eastern Area Headquarters on 15 May 1942.
"Kilmory" was built in 1912 for Sir Alexander MacCormick, who was a surgeon and a member of the Sydney University Medical School. After the war, it became Riverview College and then became a Franciscan Retreat. [16]
"A grand though simple house, it uses the harled walls, slate roofs and robust stone chimneys characterstic of architect C.R. Mackintosh (1868-1928) such as the houses Hills House, Helensburgh, Scotland, and the house built for C.F.A. Voysey (1857-1941).
It was known as the Ave Maria Centre, and was the Provincial House of the Roman Catholic Order of the Franciscan Missionaries of [17] Mary. seven apartments
Now it has been converted into just seven highly-individualised apartments within the creatively reinvented "Kilmory" security mansion (c.1913), made for entertaining with scenic Bay and Harbour views..[18]
The house is an Arts and Crafts style building designed in 1913 by John William Manson of the architectural firm Manson and Pickering for Dr Alexander MacCormick (later Sir Alexander), an eminent member of Sydney’s medical profession.
Construction of the house was undertaken by the leading building firm of Stuart Bros. Co. over the period 1913 to 1914.
The house and its landscape setting, including sandstone walling, driveway, entry posts and gates, elevated terraces, gardens and prominent trees are highly significant and contributory elements in the Wentworth Street streetscape.[19]

Kilmory's Character These existing character elements represent the distinguishing and important features of Kilmory, which are:
the dominant form and visual presence of the house as seen from Wentworth Street and from other locations, both local and distant
the landmark qualities of the site
the open appearance of the site which contrasts with the densely built up character of Point Piper
the distinctive and unifying use of sandstone in the boundary walls, garden terraces and house
the terraced landform rising from street level and terminating with the house
the uninterrupted form of the house, particularly the roof lines, against the skyline when viewed from Wentworth Street
the formal entrance gates and gate posts on Wentworth Street and the winding driveway, ascending to the house
the sweeping views of Sydney Harbour, Woollahra foreshores and the northern foreshore areas from the house and upper gardens
the individual elements of the house and its grounds that are of heritage significance as identified in the document titled Conservation Management Plan for Kilmory, 6 Wentworth Street Point Piper (January 1998 - issue F)
the significant trees and vegetation.[3]
