14 Great DIY Paddle Board Plans You Can Build Easily

Published: Feb 20, 2021 · Modified: Jul 26, 2021 by Luke Allison · This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads

Do you love enjoying yourself by rowing in the river or lake? If yes, you should know of ways of making your experience by making your paddleboard. Sounds fun, right?

There are various ways to make the boards. It all depends on the types of material you have and the amount of time available. Below are 15 unique ideas on how to make these paddleboards at low costs.

Table of Contents

1. Wooden DIY Paddle Board

1. Wooden DIY Paddle Board

The first process requires you to have Paulownia, cork, cedar, plywood, and a topcoat.

Basically, we are using the Paulownia wood to create the rails, deck, and base. The trick to a stronger paddleboard is to make the rails stringer. Position your rails on the deck and base and create strong connections using the plywood.

Use the topcoat for finishing as it brings a shiny effect.

2. Foam Shaping DIY Paddle Board

For this easy to do board, you need to shape your polystyrene foam board into a paddleboard. First, identify the size you want and note down the dimensions.

With help from others, shape your foam into the desired shape and size. The board is almost done, and all it needs are a few finishing touches. Use sandpaper or any smoothing machine to make the surfaces and edges smooth.

You can do additional designs and patterns, but at this stage, it is ready for use.

3. Long DIY Paddle Board

3. Long DIY Paddle Board

You are to make this type of board from Paulownia, cedar, and balsa wood. Cut them into 3mm sheets and then laminate them in epoxy.

After that, place the sheets together and glue them together. Use costs of epoxy to seal them up. Since it is a hand paddleboard, it would be best to make one that is below one kilogram.

For the design, you can use your imagination to create additional patterns for the perfect finish. To finish the whole process, you need a day or two.

4. Plywood DIY Paddle Board

This is one of the cheapest tricks, and to construct, take two sheets of plywood to the required sizes. Next is to strap side pieces to the front and stitch them also at the back.

Then do the stringers and braces and install them in the structure. Install the top piece, and the board comes into shape, and all that is left is adding fins and finishing.

You are to use adhesive, fiberglass, and resin to coat your piece. On the inside, ensure you use a sealant to seal all the holes and spaces to prevent water from flowing in.

5. Mash DIY Paddle Board

5. Mash DIY Paddle Board

If you want a high-quality paddle to use during your boating adventures, then gather a ruler, pencil, drill, drill bits, spade, and a wooden board.

The process is simple; first, shape and cut out the paddle from the piece of wood. Use the pencil to determine the shape and create lines on the paddle. Next is to drill a hole at each intersection of the lines.

Use the spade bit to make the holes bigger and perfect. Use sandpaper to make the edges of the holes smooth. Your paddle is ready for use.

6. Hollow Core DIY paddle Board

This final process is about installing hollow core frames to create a paddleboard. The hollow core saves you a lot of time.

To install the hollow core, add each strip to the board, making the frame. Glue down the center strip all the way down. Then, add subsequent strips and glue them too. Do this for the top and bottom of the frame.

Sand the board to make a smooth finish, and your paddleboard is ready.

7. 5 Piece Carbon DIY Paddle Board

7. 5 Piece Carbon DIY Paddle Board

This is another way to get creative using carbon fiber, fiber sheet, glue, epoxy, and screws.

To start, assemble all the tools. The first step is to glue the fiber sheet onto the carbon fiber. Always use sheets and fiber tubing of appropriate size. Also, use epoxy to blend the pieces.

Then, use the screws to hold the pieces together. Remember to make the paddle as light as possible; 500 grams is a reasonable estimate.

8. Easy To Build DIY Paddle Board

8. Easy To Build DIY Paddle Board

Before you begin the building process, designing is key. For this, use a pencil to determine the shape and size of the product. Next is to assemble a polystyrene foam, plywood, acrylic adhesive, rasp, and weighs.

After that, glue the foam sheets together and then use the template you created to cut the shapes. Then use plywood to create a beautiful finish on the foam.

Finally, add handles, feet grips, fins, and many more to the board. Also, add some water proofing features for a better experience.

9. DIY Paddle Board Kits

9. DIY Paddle Board Kits

There are four major steps to follow; assembling the internal frame, covering the frame using strips of wood, making your board waterproof, and finally doing the final touches.

The process takes few days; therefore, it is good to spare the whole weekend to do this. Also, use recommended cedar wood choice.

This process requires one to be familiar with woodworking, but it does not require complicated tools. Some of the materials to assemble are a jigsaw, orbital sander, chisel, table saw router, and hand plane.

10. Stand Up DIY Paddle Board

10. Stand Up DIY Paddle Board

You need surfboard planks, epoxy, fiberglass, SUP handle, SUP vent, fin box, fin, leash cup, and a deck pad for the whole process.

Follow these instructions to build it from scratch: first, shape the surfboard planks and then laminate them. After that, trace half of the SUP on the roofing felt and use your saw to cut out the outline.

Remove the bulk, make cuts and hone your board to shape. Cut out the fiberglass and place it on the board. Pour epoxy onto the glass and spread it out. Let it dry, and it is now ready to use.

11. Inflated Bed DIY Paddle Board

11. Inflated Bed DIY Paddle Board

This is one way to turn imagination into reality by using an inflatable kayak and a paddleboard. You will also need a pump to pump up the board.

Let's begin by connecting the paddleboard to your inflated bed. Then, model an adapter and print it in 3D. After completing that, raise your mattress to make campers. Your bed is complete in these four easy steps.

Note that the bed is not a toy to play around with.

12. Land DIY Paddle Board

12. Land DIY Paddle Board

First,  assemble the following tools and materials; band saw, table saw, wood file, rasp, orbital sander, sandpaper, drill, carpenter square, meter stick, plywood, polyurethane, grip tape, PVC pipes, and a massage roller.

Begin by making sketches to determine the dimensions to use. After that, cut your plywood to the required size and mark the dimensions on the wood. Next is to cut out the deck, then drilling and sanding it.

Add finishing touches to the board, then lay it out on the grip tape. Finally, add trucks and wheels using nuts and screws.

You can choose to construct the paddle stick using PVC pipes, but that is optional.

13. Easy Stand Up Paddle Board

13. Easy Stand Up Paddle Board

Put your woodworking skills to the test by making this stand up DIY paddleboard using foam insulation, liquid nails, plywood, joint compound, epoxy, fiberglass, circular saw, razor knife, hand saw, weights, surfoam rasp, and an orbital sander.

Its construction is a series of tasks that include; you first put together and shape the plank, add the handle box, sand the whole board to make it smooth, fiberglassing, adding your fin box, and finally adding additional beauty products and colors.

This process requires time and concentration. If this is your first time, it would be best to ask for an extra pair of hands with some tasks.

14. Wood DIY Paddle Board

14. Wood DIY Paddle Board

You can make use of leftover wood after construction to create a paddleboard. To do this, you need to come up with sketches of the final product.

After that, make your top and bottom panels, the fishbone frame, and then the rocker table. Stack up the bead and cove strips to build the rail.  The final step is to attach the top panel, sand the whole board and glass for a clear finish.

How great will it be the next time you go paddling, you use your paddleboard. You are one step from achieving this. There are various ways you can make yours. Note that these processes need time and concentration to perfect them.

Most of us are not yet familiar with the paddleboard building process, and we think it is a complicated process. Use the information above to make your own quickly and at low costs.

Standamaran: my plan for world stand up paddle board domination.

One of the door prizes at the Carp Cup was an SUP. I remember thinking how useful it would be on a shallow flat. Interested to see how your project turns out.

WOW, Heck of a door prize!

SUPs are a fashion and a fad.. a canoe does everything a SUP can do, plus it lets you sit down and stay dry. The canoe is easier to portage as well. Put an outrigger on the canoe and it's more stable than a SUP, though I've been standing and flycasting from a canoe for decades and never felt the need for outriggers. Before you spend the time and effort building that, try a canoe, maybe http://denver.craigslist.org/boa/4146624225.html My canoe fleet is whitewater and multi-day touring, I really need a fifth boat, a small solo boat.. something like the Bell Yellowstone.. ha.

I certainly like the looks of that more than some of the Kyaks on the market which are mostly shockingly heavy in my book. And weight is one of my keys because I want to be able to easily carry it to the water alone and without wheels. Thanks for the lead, I will probably proceed with my plan but will take the canoe under consideration.

weight is absolutely a key, as a young man of 40 I didn't mind carrying the sixty pounds of big red party hat, but that just isn't much fun anymore.. the cata-SUP may be tough to build light enough.. my first thought was marine plywood to build the floats, but that gets heavy quickly once glued. We await the maiden voyage with considerable interest ;-)

SUPs certainly aren't a fad, they have a time and place just like a canoe does...I certainly wouldn't used an SUP in winter, but in the warmer months they are a blast and an excellent workout as well. For the best of both worlds, check out a Native Watercraft Ultimate series boat. They are a canoe/catamaran hybrid that can act like either a canoe or an SUP. I want...

Looks like a fun "winter project".

Exactly Kevin. I am pondering actually fishing less this winter - i am a little burned out after fishing hard through the winter three years straight - and will need something fishing related.

Being an enginneer this should be cake for you. Good luck with this. Once though long ago a fly shop manager/friend was all over canoes over float tubes, the rage back then. I do see the advantage of a canoe as an easy alternative if time is a real factor. Gregg

I agree that a small single man canoe is a better option than kayak and float tube is really a non-starter for flats fishing.

Get the Carolina skiff back on the water. Complete with poling platform.

SUP / Catamaran Hybrid

What do you get when you cross a SUP with a catamaran? This video showcases the result. The inventors call it a "Standamaran". Watch this unique contraption racing down the Sacramento river in the 100 mile long California 100 race in June 2016. The board is a custom prototype Blue Planet board with two 18' long hulls.

Live Watersports Catamaran Paddleboards

L4Expedition Catamaran Paddleboard

  • Classic Accessories Colorado XT Inflatable Fishing Pontoon Boat - $517.44

I must be into predators today. Live Watersports' snake-tongued L2Fish and L4Expedition catamaran paddleboards come hot - no, how about cool and refreshing floating in a crystal clear Caribbean bay? - on the heels of the Shark Steam Mop I ran right before them. Two potentially deadly animals reimagined as coveted household and leisure activity goods.

Well, "coveted" might be a strong word for both. As swell as the mop surely is, between it and an ultra-stable, super speedy, extra roomy stand-up paddleboard with a sick catamaran-style hull, there's no contest which one I'd actually covet.

Live Watersports has 2 models in their catamaran SUP line, the L2Fish and the L4Expedition. The L2Fish is designed specifically for active paddlers who want to use their board for fishing, hunting, and windsurfing excursions, as well as those floating yoga sessions I still cannot believe people who aren't Cirque du Soleil performers can do. In combination with its forked front and back design, the L2Fish uses hollow core construction to increase buoyancy and reduce the board's weight to volume ratio. A tunnel in the hull minimizes its surface area on the water to further lessen drag, "allowing the L2Fish to slice through the water with speed to rival many racing boards on the market today." This SUP is 12'6" long x 34" wide. It weighs 51 pounds and has a load capacity of 500 pounds.

If the L2Fish is Live Watersports' sport paddleboard, the L4Expedition is its cruiser. At 14' long, it provides 8' of deck space and a 700-pound load capacity. Paddlers can move around with similar ease on the L4Expedition, but will be able to bring more stuff, and more paddlers, with them.

SUPCAT was inspired by the catamaran boats, which everyone already knows for their performance and efficiency in seaworthiness.

However, SUPCAT uses the combination of the best of the worlds, mixing monohull and multihull in a unique stand up paddle board design.

The result is a board with less hydrodynamic drag as it has less wetted surface than a board of the same size compared to SUP race boards and with excellent stability.

We can really say that it is a hybrid performance board for both touring and adventure cruises and even unique race competitions!

Inflatable Platform to Join 2 SUPs into Catamaran.

Convert 2 paddle boards into an electric catamaran..

Transform Your Paddle Boards into a Sleek Catamaran with Our Inflatable Platform!

Elevate your water adventures by converting two SUP paddle boards into a powerful, electric catamaran. Our upgraded inflatable drop-stitch platform replaces the old aluminum frame, offering quicker assembly and disassembly without sacrificing functionality.

Perfect for leisurely cruising or fishing, this inflatable platform is designed to seamlessly join two paddle boards, creating a stable, catamaran-style vessel. It's incredibly easy to inflate, install, and deflate, and comes equipped with a folding plywood transom to accommodate an electric trolling motor.

Key Features:

  • Versatile Seating: The platform includes two built-in back supports, but for those who prefer a custom setup, you can easily remove them and use your favorite beach chairs instead.
  • Stability & Capacity: Ideal for two people, yet capable of supporting up to four, thanks to the impressive buoyancy of the combined paddle boards and platform. Once fully assembled, it’s nearly impossible to flip over and extremely rigid.
  • Secure Attachment: The platform attaches to the paddle boards using provided tie-down straps, which run under the hulls and secure to D-rings on the platform. A foam layer on the bottom ensures a non-slip experience.
  • Enhanced Performance: For added rigidity, inflate the paddle boards to 60-80%, secure the tie-downs, and then finish inflating. This minimizes any movement, ensuring smooth performance even over waves.
  • Customization Options: Install an electric trolling motor (up to 1HP) on the motor mount, and secure a cooler or battery in the middle using the provided tie-downs or bungee cords.

Whether you're seeking a relaxing cruise or a sturdy fishing platform, this inflatable platform transforms your paddle boards into the ultimate catamaran experience.

Old aluminum frame to convert 2 inflatable SUPs into catamaran.

Assembly Instructions:

1. Inflate Components: Begin by inflating both SUPs and the platform to the recommended pressure.

2. Position the Platform: Place the platform over the paddle boards, ensuring it is centered.

3. Secure with Straps: Run the four provided straps under the hulls of the SUPs and secure them to the four lashing tie-down locks on the platform. Pull the straps tightly to ensure the platform is firmly attached to the top of the paddle boards. Double-check that the locks are fully engaged.

4. Adjust Motor Mount: Unfold the motor mount and adjust the lashing tie-down to ensure it is in a vertical position. The shaft of the trolling motor should rest on the outer edge of the platform, with the motor propeller positioned clear of the inflatable SUP surfaces.

5. Safety Check: Always wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) while using the platform.

6. Adjust Back Rest: If needed, you can increase the recline angle of the backrest by releasing some air. The backrest doesn't need to be as firm as the platform and can be softer for added comfort.

Quick Tip: For optimal rigidity:

  • Option 1: Install the platform on top of the SUPs while they are slightly under-inflated. Once the platform is secured, fully inflate the SUPs. The boards will expand, creating a highly rigid structure.
  • Option 2: Alternatively, install the slightly under-inflated platform on fully inflated SUPs, secure the straps, and then add more air to the platform. This will allow the platform to expand further, enhancing rigidity.

Startup Selfie

The Supmaran presents a unique solution for outdoor enthusiasts torn between paddleboarding and boating. This modular kit effortlessly combines the functionality of both watercraft, offering flexibility and convenience. It is the brainchild of Austrian outdoor enthusiasts Martin Schwaiger and Gregor Schuster, and has evolved through various prototypes since 2019. Currently, it is the focus of a Kickstarter campaign aimed at bringing this innovative product to market.

The Supmaran setup includes two inflatable standup paddleboards (SUPs), a snap-together tubular polymer frame, a waterproof fabric sunshade, an 80-liter cargo box, and two folding mesh chairs. This modular design allows users to utilize the SUPs separately for traditional paddleboarding or combine them for boating. For those who already own two identical SUPs, the kit can be purchased without the boards, allowing for cost savings.

The assembly process is straightforward and efficient. When boating is desired, the frame is snapped together, the sunshade is attached, and the entire structure is secured to the two side-by-side SUPs with four included straps. The chairs are then unfolded and strapped to the frame, and the cargo box is placed between the two chairs, providing storage for drinks, snacks, smartphones, and other essentials.

If a third-party electric trolling motor is used, it can be attached to the frame’s motor mount. Alternatively, the Supmaran can be paddled by two passengers, each paddling on their respective side.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Martin Schwaiger

The entire assembly process is claimed to take less than 15 minutes, making it quick and convenient to switch between paddleboarding and boating. The complete setup weighs approximately 48 kg (106 lb) and can support a maximum passenger and cargo weight of 200 kg (441 lb). This weight capacity ensures that the Supmaran can comfortably accommodate two adults and their gear.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Fits in Car

One of the notable features of the Supmaran is its portability. When disassembled and packed, the entire kit fits into the back of a car, making it easy to transport to various locations. Additionally, when the SUPs are used independently, the frame, sunshade, and chairs can be set up on the shore to create a mini gazebo, providing a comfortable and shaded area to relax.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Mini Gazebo

The pricing for the Supmaran, assuming it reaches production, is set at €1,266 (approximately US$1,360) for the setup without the SUPs. For those who prefer the full package, including the SUPs, the cost is €1,920 (around US$2,063). This pricing reflects the versatility and convenience offered by the Supmaran, making it an attractive option for campers, travelers, and water sports enthusiasts seeking a multi-functional watercraft.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Cargo Box

In summary, the Supmaran offers a practical and flexible solution for both paddleboarding and boating, making it an ideal choice for outdoor adventures. Its modular design, ease of assembly, and portability ensure that users can enjoy their water activities with minimal hassle and maximum enjoyment.

picture of a paddleboard featuring two pontoons and a deck.

June 22, 2024 Shades of green loaded with happy birds surround me on our deck. It's light at 0500ish. My coffee steams a bit. Life is good! As always, a supCAT starts with two pontoons and a deck. It includes a base set of ‘build to order’ features and can also include optional add-ons like:a variety of lengths and widths, several different wood species, ‘pinstripes’, a custom decal, hatches, and ‘one of a kind’ deck designs.

There's something about wood boats that is hard to quantify. For me as a builder, I love the smell when I'm working the wood into shape, the feel of a spokeshave as it moves across a piece of wood, and the look of the wood as it comes alive under epoxy or varnish. As a paddler, the feel of a wood boat as it slips through the water is very satisfying.

Pictures below are from the July 2018 supCAT splash. It handled well and felt great. As the pics show, this fourteen foot model nicely fits two people.

  • length - the supCAT pictured above is 14 feet long and 32 inches wide. 12 foot supCATs are possible, as are even longer (expedition anyone??) supCATs
  • wood - white pine (seen above), but western red cedar, redwood, even reclaimed barn board are options,
  • complementary pinstripe woods, e.g. purpleheart, wenge, bubinga,
  • a simple open deck. Plenty of design options are possible - ranging from hatches to built-in fishing rod holders!

How to Build a Wood Paddle Board

license

Introduction: How to Build a Wood Paddle Board

How to Build a Wood Paddle Board

Why build a wooden SUP?

Paddle boarding is inherently a very clean activity but when you consider the harmful chemicals, overseas manufacturing, and short lifespan of foam paddleboards, things look quite different. For a long time I have lived with the idea that recycling isn’t the answer to our society’s constant use of the planets resources so paddling on a foam board made about as much sense to me as eating on styrofoam plates.

Building your own wooden SUP offers an alternative that is both environmentally responsible, longer lasting, and the finished boards look great with timeless style. Wood boards look a harder to build than they really are; more challenging than assembling an IKEA dresser but easier than building a wooden canoe or kayak. The project is completed in many small steps making it easy to fit in with life's other responsibilities. (Wife, kids, employment, etc..) If you start with a CNC fishbone frame you should be done in about 40 hours.

Step 1: Bottom Panel

Bottom Panel

Bottom Panel

One of the really cool parts about building a paddle board is the top and bottom panels can be built as large flat panels. Two flat book-matched panels are built and then bent over a series of risers that exactly match the rocker and contours of the finished board. If you have build a wooden kayak or canoe by adding one 3/4" strips at a time you will really appreciate starting with a single 30" wide piece.

Step 2: Fishbone Frame

Fishbone Frame

The internal fishbone frame is the skeleton that replaces the traditional foam core usually found in paddle boards. You can build your own fishbone using paper plans but using a CNC paddleboard kit saves a ton of fiddly work that doesn't show on the finished board.

Step 3: Rocker Table

Rocker Table

A rocker table is used to set both the boards rocker and the bottom contours. Paddleboards have a lot of subtle engineering going on under the board that the rocker table presses into the finished board. Wooden boards shapes are designed first on a computer and then jigs are used to ensure the correct shape is achieved. The combination of using thin panels sandwiched between matching forms allows very complex shapes without the need for steam.

Step 4: Bead & Cove Rails

Bead & Cove Rails

The SUP's rails are built by stacking 1/4" x 3/8" bead & cove strips one at a time. These narrow bead & cove strips have many benefits over boards built with solid rails. The first is the individual narrow strips are easy to bend and usually the only the first few require any steaming. A cloths iron provides enough steam in about 1 minute and laminating many narrow strips is both easier and more stable than forcing a single piece into position. Since the boards shape is defined by the internal fishbone frame DIY builders do not have to know how to properly shape the boards rails to achieve the correct shape. The outer skins thickness is never thicker than 1/4" thick resulting in a board that ends up weighing only 10 percent heavier than a quality foam board.

Step 5: Internal Blocking

Internal Blocking

With the bead & cove rails complete it is time to cut off the nose and tail sections for solid blocking. The solid blocking saves you from having to steam bend tight radius curves and it adds ascetically pleasing transitions at the nose and tail. Blocking is also added to support the fin box, SUP handle, leash cup and vent before the top panel is added. The internal blocking can be made from recycled foam (pictured) or solid wood blocks.

Step 6: Attaching the Top Panel

Attaching the Top Panel

The next step in building a hollow wooden SUP is attaching the top panel. As a professional builder, I have a lot of clamps but you do not need walls of clamps to do this step. The clamps pictured are being used to hold strong-back in position but webbing straps or string can also be used. Wooden door wedges do the real clamping and allow you to curve the deck by pressing against the strong-back. After the top is attached the excess material is removed with a drawknife and spokeshave and the rails are given a final shaping.

Step 7: Sanding

Sanding

The last step before glassing is to sand the entire board. I hated sanding when I started woodworking because I would grab an orbital sander with 220-grit and it would take forever to get the desired results. I now start with largest sander practical for the job and use a coarser grit like 80 to fair and flatten the project. Once everything is fair/flat you can start working your way through the finer grits: 100, 150, 220 and you finish with better results in a fraction of the time.

Step 8: Glassing

Glassing

Glassing a wood paddle board can be a bit intimidating if you haven't worked with fibreglass and epoxy before but it is really quite simple. The basic steps are you laminate the board, do a hot coat to fill the weave of the cloth and then finish with a gloss coat to make the board shiny. The individual steps are covered in much greater detail in free tutorials on my website: how to build a wood paddle board . In a society where everything seems to be disposable, it's awesome building something that will never go out of style or need replacing. Using your handcrafted paddle board promises simple joy and happiness for a lifetime.
