The perfect total package, packed in 1 foiling catamaran. This is the world’s coolest boat for singlehanded races and the winner of several A-cat world championships and many other sailing races.

The 2020-F1x A-cat is exactly the same foiling catamaran that made Mischa Heemskerk Vice-World Champion at the Herveybay Worlds 2018 in Australia and World Champion at Weymouth 2019. All our foiling F1x A-class catamarans come straight, ready to race and ‘Mischa-tuned’ from our factory.

Unique design enables top performances

The F1x A-class foiling catamaran is the ultimate reflection of our current design language. The aerodynamic design accentuates the performance qualities of this super fast foiling racing boat. The sophisticated deck plan provides clear control and minimal air resistance.

Foils The rudders and daggerboard foils used on the F1x A-class foiling catamarans are produced with the highest quality carbon pre-preg fibers. The foils are cured in our own Autoclave . Our winning foil design was created in close cooperation with Glenn Ashby and the designers of AC Team New Zealand .

Construction The F1x A-cat is manufactured entirely according to the carbon pre-preg/ Nomex production method, and cured in our Autoclave. This technology is the same as used in the aerospace industry and within other foiling boats like for example, the America’s Cup.

Design The design of the F1x foiling A-class catamaran was completely conceived by the DNA design team and made at DNA’s own yard. In the DNA design team Pieterjan Dwarshuis, Mischa Heemskerk and the renowned Dutch industrial design engineer Rudo Enserink worked closely together to create the perfect foiling A-class catamaran.

A-Class Catamaran having it both ways

Published on April 10th, 2023 by Editor -->

The singlehanded A-Class Catamaran has a strong presence in the USA, which was strong enough to host the 2022 World Championship, and strong enough for the country’s Ravi Parent to win the Open division world title.

Scuttlebutt editor Craig Leweck checked in with Florida A-Class sailor Axel Issel for an update:

The A-Class Class rules allow for development, which is good for improving the boat but can get expensive as gear becomes obsolete. How does this impact participation?

The A-Class is divided into two sub-classes separated by different sets of measurement rules; the Foilers (Open) and non-foiling (the Classics). In the case of the Classics that have been around 67 years, most development has occurred in the last decade or so with the change from straight dagger boards to C foils and the deck-sweeper mainsail with curved booms.

a class foiling catamaran

Older hulls and masts remain competitive but the newer configurations do provide a slight advantage. Today, Classic boats from 10+ years keep winning Nationals and Continental championships and boats with straight booms and daggerboards still are in the top 5 in the Euro circuit.

The Classic fleet keeps growing in most countries due to the speed and simplicity of the boat; very competitive, tactical, fun races, with plenty of accessible boats around the globe. In many parts of the world, the Classics are very popular with larger numbers than Foilers like in the US/Canada, Italy, France, Australia, etc.

Sailors in Classics are competitive at all ages, many well into their 70s so it is a class where you can grow and be at the top for decades with your same boat for many, many years.

The Foilers have seen the most recent development. Here newer boats (2019-20 and newer) make a difference over older ones since they are easier and more stable to foil. Participation in the class is achieved in Classics due to very even and fun races with skippers with 20 years fighting 70s-year-olds. Participation in Foilers comes from younger sailors trying to master the fastest single-handed catamaran in the world.

Most of the top sailors in the world raced A-Cats at some point, even though it is a non-Olympic class. The A-Cat has consistently proven itself in the international scene whereby the World, European, and North American Championships are frequented by some of the most famous sailors in the world.

However, it’s always taken the dedication of a pure A-Class sailor to win the Championships. This demonstrates the high level of performance within the class and it leads to amazing numbers of entries for such events. Today, almost all top professional regattas are raced in foiling boats, like the America’s Cup, the Ocean Race, SailGP, etc, so learning and growing in a foiling A-Cat gives you experience and advantage, attracting young talents to the fleet.

When was the shift to foiling? How did the class endure that transition? Were there kits? Foilers started around 2015, but in 2018 the class decided to create two sets of rules to keep the non-foiling boats competitive, and two sub-classes were born. I believe this was a wise decision, to make the class appealing to a wider population.

Today you can be competitive in your 20s and into your 70s, with a newer Foiler or with an older Classic. Regattas are usually scored in two fleets, and some, like the North American Championship regatta, have the two fleets + the “Overall NA Champion” who is the best skipper among the two classes.

The transition was progressive, initially some folks modified the trunks on the hull to insert the newer foiling blades. Today, to be competitive in Foilers, you need a newer foiling specific boat. Manufacturers build two models: the Foiler and the Classic. The Classic is lighter, simpler and less expensive. The Foiler has a lower hull profile; is heavier due to extra carbon needed to support extreme foiling forces, and needs better physical input.

Has the foiling equipment stabilized or is it still evolving? For the last three years (late 2019-2020), there have been no new developments. The latest one was the rudder differential. Some have been working on differential for center foils with no success. Also, cambered sails with specific masts have been designed, but nothing new has come out. Until measurement rules for Foilers are changed, it will be difficult to see any new significant design improvement.

How is the used boat inventory in North America? Today, there are around 20 used boats for sale. Some used boats for sale are almost new, like a 2022 Foiler and newer Classics. You can buy an old Classic for less than $5K and be competitive in the Classic fleet. Used boats and parts can be found in https://usaca.info/ and in https://www.facebook.com/groups/922063451790001/ .

Who are the suppliers for North America? Are there any in the continent? Boats and masts builders are in Europe. Today, the largest manufacturer of boats is eXploder from Poland (with accessible labor), which provides new Classics and Foilers. Fastboatstuff.com is their representative in the US, and they carry new boats and parts for almost all new and older model boats. North America is getting shipments from Europe usually two times per year with new boats and parts. I have been in the class three years and I always find the parts needed quickly. Top competitive sails are built here in the USA by Glaser, Sail Technologies, etc.

Why do Foilers and Classics race together? Because it is way more fun, and way more competitive. The fleet is well mixed during races. In addition, it is a good way of keeping the fleet growing, making an easy and fun entry point to the class with more options. For example, I started in Classics two years ago and after the Worlds in Houston last year, I sold my Classic and I switched to the Open class.

Usually, the top Foilers will have an advantage but most part of the fleet is mixed. In lighter winds like sub 10 knots, the boats are even and in lighter non-foiling conditions, Classics are faster. Top light sailors can start foiling downwind around 8 knots but most of the foiling fleet foils closer with 10 knots of wind 100% air time, and upwind foiling is mastered only by the ultra-top sailors, and usually they need 12-13 knots of wind to make real gains over the top Classics going upwind.

For us, the newer foiling sailors, learning to foil (like me!), will always have Classics around showing how much ground is lost while we are trying to fly……and once on air, if we do not do the correct angle, Classics will pass you by. .Racing with 50 boats on the line, is always more fun than 20-30 boats, and chances are you always will have someone next to you on every mark.

What is the ideal sailor weight for the A-Cat? I believe 170-195 pounds is the ideal range, NED 007 Mischa Heemskerk won the world championship several times and he is 225+ lbs; the latest World Champion USA 76 Ravi Parent (2022 Rolex Yachtsman of the year) weighs around 165lbs . Who knows….!

Where are the hubs of class activity in North America? Florida concentrates 30% of the fleet, with Key Largo, and the Sarasota/Tampa Bay area being the most popular spots, followed by Fort Walton and Melbourne, FL. Lake Lanier in Georgia has one of the largest fleets, Annapolis/West River area is popular as well.

Lake Carlyle in Illinois, where we raced the 2021 North Americans, have several active boats. Also, there are 10 boats in Alamitos Bay in California, and there is a large fleet in Ontario Canada where we raced the 2022 North American Championship.

I heard a new fleet will grow soon in Mexico City as well. This year we are all looking forward to race in October the ‘Alter Cup’ in Pensacola, Florida, only for Classic boats, where skippers from other multihull fleets join the A-Catters to determine the best multihull skipper!

'a' class catamaran, association.

The official site for the British 'A' Class Catamaran Association.  Designed to inform new and existing 'A' Cat sailors about UK 'A' Class trends.

Why Sail the

'a' class cat.

Whereas most other racing classes are one-design, the A-Class is a development class and as a result it has become the very pinnacle of the high-tech sailing boat.  Many state-of-the-art design developments seen today in, for example, the latest Americas Cup racers, have been first developed and then applied to the 'A' Class cat.

Whilst being a relatively easy boat to actually sail.  They are stable and not particularly prone to cartwheeling or 'pitch-polling' even in the strongest of winds, unless you do something really stupid.  But the 'A' Class Catamaran is difficult to sail well, requiring many subtle tweaks and fine tuning to get it up to it's full potential.  You can be sailing upwind and suddenly realize that everyone else is out-pointing you, for no apparent reason!  A slight sail trim here, a small mast rotation there - it all has an effect, which is more noticeable because you are traveling faster. It suits people who like to fiddle and tune, but the feeling when you hit the sweet-spot is superb!

It is so responsive that it almost talks to you...... You just have to learn to listen.

Hardly any two 'A' Cats are the same.  Each sailor likes to have things customized to

suit their own style.  Transom or centre mainsheet, different downhaul and mast rotation systems, even rudder and daggerboard shapes can vary.  You will see many different hull shapes.  Until recently, the trend was for wave piercing bows.

Now, The class is now in two categories - the Classic: the original non-foiling version, fitted with straight or constant curve C shape boards, and the Open, (or foiling version) fitted with J and Z shaped boards, together with T or L rudders allow skilled sailors to foil the boats downwind.

However, the actual hull shape has a lesser effect on the speed than having the correct rig setup.  The mast and sail are designed to work together for a particular crew weight.  Having the correct sail shape and mast stiffness for you is far more important than having the latest hull design.  A smooth sailing style is also crucial, and with an all up minimum weight of 75kg, this is essential to maximising the potential boatspeed.

Although spectacular to watch, the Open foiling category requires much more agility and movement to sail properly.  They are much more 'on the edge' as regards stability, however, the speeds now reached are in excess of 32 knots in this configuration.

The Classic usually tends to be the more popular version sailed here in the UK, and indeed Worldwide.  The close racing, and comparative ease of sailing keeps many older sailors within the class and the camaraderie as much fun as the sailing.

So, if you are up for the challenge of the Formula One of the sailing boat world, drop us a line.  We can then hopefully put you in touch with someone who can help, as the 'A' class 'scene' is a very friendly and helpful one!

Currently we have A cat sailors at the following clubs;

Thorpe Bay, Whitstable, Rutland, Grafham Water, Weston, Weymouth, Stokes Bay, Bala, Clacton, Farmoor.

Now you wouldn't want to die not knowing, would you?!

Currently there are A cat fleets here

The new DNA F1x A-class catamaran is unveiled!

DNA is proud to unveil the new  F1x A-cat . In essence, it is a comprehensive update to the original F1 A-cat introduced in the spring of 2016.  Cost - Platform ready to go €25000 +VAT.

So, two years have passed since the introduction of the F1 and this is the first update. What remains and what has changed? Mischa, PJ and DNA lead engineer Niels went the extra mile. It is still the F1 as you know it, with the same hull shape aimed for light air & floating performance and aero optimization when foiling. But we have changed and added a few go-faster bits – more than just swapping foils alone.. The moulds have been slightly reworked and in short, these are the changes made:

>> Magic wheel sheeting below deck

>> Internal traveller system in aft beam

>> New Z-foil design

>> Changed Z-foil position and trunk entry with easy rake readout

>> New rudder design

>> Changed rudder position

>> Rudder rake adjustment while sailing

>> Boomless pinhead sail design from Mischa Sails

>> Larger deck area for crossing

The F1x´s changes are explained in more detail on the following pages. Sailing images will be provided when the weather clears up – photo sessions have thus far been cancelled due to rain or fog.

Magic wheel sheeting

Located below the semi-rigid carbon trampoline is a clever new wheel sheeting system which replaces the traditional main sheet system. Why a wheel? This allows lesser sheeting loads and gives a much faster response. The sheet rolls on a wheel and is covered to prevent the sheet from falling off in case of a slacked line. It is a very clean system and requires less physical effort, which means lesser chance of mistakes throughout an already exhausting racing day, and the advantage of a quicker response needs no further explanation.

Internal traveller

The F1’s aft beam, which originally featured a nicely recessed traveller track, has been extensively reworked; with the F1x the aft beam features a wholly integrated traveller car inside the carbon beam. There are multiple advantages over a normal traveller track: it weighs less, there is -again- lesser windage, it runs smoother, it is fully optimized for a boomless sail and that sheet is no longer in your way as it fully runs under the trampoline.

We have been running a foil improvement program for more than a year now, as we started trying amended foil shapes well ahead of the 2017 Worlds. We found it very hard to make an allround improvement to the original Z-foil design which we developed in 2013 and introduced the following year. We then decided to call for help and have collaborated with Martin Fischer to create the next level in Z-foil design. Martin needs no further introduction we believe, and the good thing is - with most respect- that he is a real performance freak in the best sense of the word. Nothing but the absolute best would do, which meant that reviewing our real world data from testing our modified foil shapes and Martins computational calculations resulted in more than a dozen new shapes. Each was reviewed until, after months, we arrived at the final new shape.

The one goal throughout foil development has been very straightforward; to make foiling easier overall and to achieve more flying time (upwind). This should ease foiling in rougher conditions which ultimately results in higher average speeds around the course, and secondly it makes entrance into the class for newbies easier too. We started off by saying that we would be happy to sacrifice some top end speed for a more forgiving design – however the foil professor came up with a design that is easier to foil, more forgiving overall AND has a higher top end. We expect to break the 30 knots speed barrier pretty soon, so as the season progresses and we learn more, it will be fun doing some new speed runs versus the MOTH’s again.

When you look at the pictures, you will note more curves in the daggerboards. The Z-foils are fully class compliant and have been positioned slightly further forward. The foil has a higher aspect ratio and features some pretty ‘kinky’ intelligent stuff, featuring various profiles throughout the design.

The rudders are a new design too. They are now positioned slightly canted, and the winglet is canted even further for additional heave stability. We maintain using L-rudders (so no T-rudders); these could be placed further outwards and are then not in the wake of the daggerboards providing a better steer and more efficient lift. The new rudders are located further aft to create a larger span, which aids control when foiling generally and eases upwind foiling specifically.

In our opinion, L-rudders are the optimal rudder for performance and a positive side effect is that it is easy to shake off weed while sailing. Weed is pretty common in Dutch summers and we just do not want to make a full stop when you feel some weed dragging – just pop a hull, shake it loose and off you go again [at warp speed]. Small matter it may be, but details do matter.

Foil rake

With the new F1x, the rake of both daggerboards and rudders can be adjusted while sailing. Last year, Mischa trialed various prototype rudder rake systems for convenience and durability and we have now come up with a well working, lightweight and clean solution.

Although the rudder rake is synchronized as standard, the rudder rake system has already been separated in a port and starboard system to -eventually- offer rake differential at the rudders. Customer boats will not feature this ex-factory as yet, although DNA team riders will feature such to test the structural integrity of the various masts currently available during the 2018 season. Rudder differential will increase righting moment and thus speed, however loads on the rig go up too and we do not want to see customer masts failing.

Rudder feeling

Achieving a light, direct and balanced feel on the rudder is a DNA trademark and has been a high priority for years, and it has now improved even further. It is balanced such that the pressure on the helm slightly increases when foiling high, providing more feedback and control.

Sail changes

DNA successfully introduced the decksweeper sail setup with a wishbone boom. Initially, we were skeptical about a boomless decksweeper sail, however with the latest pinhead sail designs from Mischa Sails and our new traveler setup we no longer require a boom to achieve the best performance. This saves weight and costs.

Retrofitting

Changes between the F1 and F1x are few, but are nonetheless significant due to a few changes in the platform. Retrofitting new features as rudder rake adjustment, the internal beam traveler and the magic wheel sheeting would involve a mighty lot of work.  Due to the changed positioning and shape, the F1x Z-foils will not fit in the 2016-2017 F1 daggerboard cases – however, with ample interest from existing F1 A-cat customers, we will create a new Z-foil which takes lessons learned from the updated F1x, and make that suitable for use in the F1 without any platform modification whatsoever.

The new F1x L-rudders can be used in the original F1 rudder cassettes, requiring just some sanding for a snug fit.

Overall

We hope to deliver in our quest for improved handling, more speed and more control while going fast while maintaining good looks. The last bit of good news is that we have been able to lose some weight – total weights are very close to the magic 75 kg again.

We remain affirmed in our belief that customers should be able to sail, foil and race within 30 minutes after taking delivery of their A-cat.  Each DNA F1x comes fully prepared and tuned  (tuned to Mischa spec) so you can go sailing straight away. Due to the added complexities, the platform cost has gone up to €25000 excluding taxes.

We hope you like it – let us know your comments at  [email protected] please!

Best Free Online Ph.D. Programs Badge 2024

Best Free Online Ph.D. Programs of 2024

Written by Blanca Villagomez

Updated: October 1, 2023

Compare School Options

Most schools have rolling admissions and financial help so you can start your degree in a few weeks!

Once you’ve earned a Ph.D., you’ll be able to enjoy career benefits such as a higher average salary and lower unemployment . The high tuition for these programs may put you off. It is not uncommon for the listed tuition for online Ph.D. programs to exceed $1,000 per credit.

But is that really what a Ph.D. program would cost you? According to the 2021 Survey of Earned Doctorates , most doctorate recipients in every field except psychology report holding absolutely no debt related to their graduate education. By selecting an affordable school and taking advantage of resources such as assistantships and dissertation grants, you may be able to eliminate the cost of earning your Ph.D. entirely. This guide will show you how to reduce the expenses associated with Ph.D. programs as much as possible.

How to Get a Ph.D. For Free

According to the Survey of Earned Doctorates referenced above, only 15.3% of doctorate recipients relied on their own money as their primary source of financial support for earning their degree. Below, we’ll show you how to become part of the 85% that can use outside resources to fund their online Ph.D. program.

Avoid non-accredited degree mills

Before we get into the different types of financial resources available for online Ph.D. students, it’s important to note that some programs should be avoided altogether.

You should make sure that any private college you’re considering is a nonprofit organization. Many private for-profit organizations that offer online degree programs, especially those that claim to offer “free” degree programs, are actually degree mills. This means they operate like a postsecondary institution even though they don’t have the proper accreditation to award legitimate degrees.

Degree mills focus more on generating revenue than providing high-quality education. They often attract users by advertising free tuition, only to charge an assortment of other fees (exam fees, graduation fees, etc.). If you attend a degree mill, you’ll likely waste a lot of money on a program that doesn’t have qualified instructors or an effective curriculum. Worse yet, employers generally don’t respect degrees earned from these institutions, so it won’t even help you advance your career.

There are a few ways to determine whether a college is legitimate. First, if a school’s domain name doesn’t end in “.edu,” that’s a big red flag. Even a “.org” suffix is suspicious, and you certainly shouldn’t trust any online college that ends in “.com.”

You can also use the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs to review a school’s accreditation records. Look for the names of CHEA-recognized accrediting organizations . Colleges approved by one of these organizations are held to strict standards for academic quality, ensuring that students will be prepared to enter their chosen field upon graduation. This is what employers want to see.

See if you qualify for any scholarships or grants

24.2% of doctorate recipients use fellowships, scholarships, or dissertation grants as the primary source of funding for their doctorate program. We recommend reaching out to the financial aid offices of the schools you’re considering to see what they offer for new Ph.D. students, and you should check out the scholarships provided by private organizations as well.

After submitting your FAFSA each year, apply for any of these financial aid options that you may qualify for. Be sure to research these opportunities as soon as you can, as this will help you avoid missing key deadlines.

Here are a few examples to give you an idea of exactly how these award programs work:

  • Meta Research Ph.D. Fellowship Program: This award is for Ph.D. students researching certain areas of computer science and engineering relevant to Meta (the parent company of Facebook), such as database systems and virtual reality. To apply, students must send a resume, research statement, and two letters of recommendation. Fellows receive a total stipend of $42,000.
  • CAPCSD Ph.D. Scholarships: Every year, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders awards $20,000 to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program for communication sciences and disorders. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of their research dissertation plan, and a letter of support from their research advisor signed by the program director.
  • Russell Sage Foundation Dissertation Research Grants: This award of up to $10,000 is for doctoral students researching topics related to the Russell Sage Foundation’s mission of improving social and living conditions in the United States. Funds from this program must be used specifically for dissertation research expenses, such as study participant incentives, laboratory costs, and travel.

You can check out our scholarship database for more information on this subject.

Find a fully funded Ph.D. program

Finally, 21.3% of doctorate recipients fund most of their degree expenses from teaching assistantships, and another 34.7% primarily receive funding from research assistantships and traineeships.

These resources are often packaged with Ph.D. programs to form a “fully funded” Ph.D. option. In exchange for working at your university in a teaching or research role, they’ll cover the cost of your tuition. Such programs may also offer benefits like health insurance, a stipend for living expenses, and tuition waivers. Just keep in mind that fully funded Ph.D. programs tend to be highly competitive, so you’ll likely need to be a top student in order to take advantage of these benefits.

When a university indicates that they provide full funding to their PhD students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted doctoral student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to six year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, so be sure to research the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

In the  ProFellow database , we also list several competitive fellowships for graduate and doctoral study.

Ph.D. Program Details

Why a Ph.D. in Law?   •   Course of Study   •   Placement and Support on the Law Teaching Market   •   Tuition and Financial Aid

Why a Ph.D. in Law?

In addition to offering an opportunity to study and contribute to the evolution of law as an academic field of study, the Ph.D. in Law program provides an excellent pathway to a career in legal scholarship and law teaching. Whether it is right for any individual candidate depends on a variety of factors. If you are trying to decide between the Ph.D. in Law program and a fellowship or a visiting assistant professorship (VAP), you should keep in mind a number of considerations, including that the Ph.D. in Law program is a three-year course of study beyond the J.D. and that it provides a more structured program—including coursework, qualifying exams, and close faculty supervision—than do most fellowships or VAPs. The Ph.D. in Law program requires coursework, a written and an oral comprehensive exam, a dissertation—which may take the form of a traditional monograph or three law review articles—and teaching experience. You should also consider the availability of appropriate mentors in different programs. At Yale Law School, you will have a three-member faculty committee advising you throughout your time in the Ph.D. program, and you will have an opportunity to work closely with a wide range of Yale faculty in your courses and in your research and writing. In addition, you will have the opportunity to engage fully in the intellectual life of Yale Law School and Yale University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences .

If you are trying to decide between the Ph.D. in Law and a Ph.D. in another discipline, many of the same considerations come into play. Please keep in mind that Ph.D. programs in economics, political science, history, and other fields train scholars to produce research responsive to the questions central to those disciplines. The scholarship produced by law faculties—and expected of candidates for teaching positions at law schools—is largely motivated by different sets of questions. While many students are able to apply their training in other disciplines to the study of law, a significant advantage of the Ph.D. in Law program is that it is designed specifically to prepare students for careers in legal scholarship, rather than in scholarship in another field. We should also stress that the Ph.D. in Law program welcomes applications from candidates with interdisciplinary research interests—significant advanced training in other disciplines as a part of the Ph.D. in Law program is encouraged, where appropriate.

Course of Study

Applicants to the Ph.D. in Law program should know the area of law in which they would like to specialize and should be prepared to articulate that interest in a research proposal. Applicants’ research proposals, however, are not expected to be as refined as a dissertation prospectus, and it is anticipated that the nature of students’ projects and interests will evolve over their time in the program. Each student will have a faculty Advisory Committee, which will work with the student to develop the research project into a dissertation prospectus and, eventually, a dissertation—which may take the form of three significant, publishable articles that might appear in a leading law review, or a single, book-length manuscript.

The First Year

Most students will dedicate much of their first year in the program to coursework. Students will work with their Advisory Committees to select as many as six courses that will best prepare them to carry out their research projects. In cases where students have already completed relevant graduate training, their Advisory Committees may waive up to four of the six required courses.

All first-year Ph.D. candidates will be required to take a two-semester pro-seminar on legal scholarship and methodologies. The first semester of this pro-seminar will be dedicated to reading and discussing canonical works of legal scholarship. The second semester will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of student papers in a workshop format. The pro-seminar, required of all Ph.D. candidates, will be the cornerstone of a genuine intellectual and professional community, serving as well as an opportunity for students working in different areas of law to interact with and to learn from each other and from the faculty leading these and other seminars and workshops.

During their second semester, all Ph.D. candidates will complete the first of two qualifying examinations. The pro-seminar will constitute the primary preparation for this first, written, examination. During their second semester and first summer in the program, students will also work with their Advisory Committees to prepare for a second qualifying exam in their area of specialization. Unlike the first qualifying exam, which measures the breadth of a candidate’s knowledge, the second is an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the candidate’s area of specialization. The second qualifying exam will be conducted orally by the candidate’s Advisory Committee members and ordinarily will be administered at the beginning of the third semester in the program.

The Second Year

After passing the second qualifying exam, candidates will assemble a faculty Dissertation Committee. This committee often will—but does not have to—include the same faculty members who served on the candidate’s initial Advisory Committee. In their second year, students will work with their Dissertation Committees to bring their dissertation prospectus to fruition. The dissertation itself is expected to take the form of either a book-length manuscript or three publishable law review articles; it will usually constitute a portfolio of writing which students can use on the job market. Once the dissertation prospectus is approved, students are expected to spend the remainder of their time in the program, including summers, researching and writing the dissertation.

Each candidate in the Ph.D. in Law program also will gain training and experience in teaching, and will be required to participate in two semester-long teaching experiences. There will be a number of ways in which students may fulfill the teaching requirement. These may include (1) serving as a teaching assistant for a Law School course; (2) serving as a teaching assistant for a course in Yale College or another school at Yale; (3) co-teaching a class with a Yale Law School faculty member; (4) leading a Yale Law School Reading Group course; (5) teaching an independent seminar in one of the Yale Residential Colleges; or, (6) in unusual situations, teaching their own course. In all cases, students completing their teaching requirements will have faculty supervision, as well as close contact with and feedback from their advisors. The particular teaching assignment and the timing of this requirement will be determined by the candidate in consultation with his or her Advisory and/or Dissertation Committee, but ordinarily candidates will complete the first of their teaching requirements in the second semester of the second year of the program.

The Third Year

Those students interested in pursuing a career as a professor of law generally should expect to go on the job market during their third year in the program. Ph.D. candidates will be offered access to the same wide range of support in this endeavor as Yale Law School currently provides to its students, alumni, and fellows who enter the law teaching market. Students will otherwise devote the third year to completing their dissertation and, in many cases, completing a second teaching experience. Students will generally be expected to complete the program after three years, but requests to extend the course of study beyond three years will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In such cases, funding may be limited.

Placement and Support on the Law Teaching Market

Yale Law School has enjoyed tremendous success in helping its students secure law teaching positions. The Law School often places 25-40 of its graduates in tenure-track positions at law schools each year. Despite its relatively small size, Yale Law School has produced approximately ten percent of all professors currently teaching in American law schools. A recent study found that of the 189 faculty at the top sixteen law schools who had received their J.D. in the preceding fifteen years, a plurality—80 professors—graduated from Yale Law School. Many deans at law schools across the country and around the world also are Yale graduates.

The Law School provides comprehensive support to all its students, alumni, and fellows, guiding them through all stages of the legal teaching job market. Ph.D. in Law candidates enjoy access to the full range of support services currently available to Yale Law School students, alumni, and fellows.

For more information, consult the Law Teaching Program’s website .

Tuition and Financial Aid

Ph.D. in Law candidates will receive a full-tuition fellowship and a living stipend at an amount set by the Graduate School, Yale Basic Health coverage, and a Health Award covering the cost of hospitalization and specialty coverage. Financial support is conditioned on the student's making satisfactory academic progress. The Ph.D. in Law program is administered jointly by the Graduate School and the Law School. More information on financial aid and the cost of living in New Haven can be found on the Graduate School's  website .

Doctor of Science of Law (JSD)

January 2023, JSD cohort with Professor Amalia Kessler, Associate Dean for Degree Programs

The Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD) is the Law School’s most advanced law degree, and is considered a doctorate equivalent to a Ph.D.  It is designed for those interested in becoming scholars and teachers of law including interdisciplinary approaches to law.

Study toward the degree is open only to a small number of exceptionally well-qualified students who hold a JD or LL.B earned outside the United States.  Students in the program develop substantive expertise in one or more fields of law and have the opportunity to pursue substantive and methodological training in allied disciplines across the broader university, including but not limited to, the social sciences, humanities, and engineering.  The program culminates in the student producing a dissertation under the personal supervision of a Faculty committee comprised of law school professors as well as, where appropriate given the student’s interests, faculty from other departments of the university.

There are two different tracks for admission into the JSD program.  A minimum of two students will be admitted from among students who have completed the Stanford Program in International Legal Studies (SPILS)  at Stanford Law School.  In addition, students at Stanford and at other law schools in the United States who will have completed LLM degrees prior to the commencement of the JSD program are encouraged to apply for admission and will be seriously considered.  To be competitive, students applying from LLM programs must have completed (and must submit) a serious piece of independent, original research demonstrating their scholarly potential.

Admission to the JSD program is on a highly selective basis. Please note that admission to SPILS or to any Stanford LLM program does not imply a commitment by Stanford Law School to accept a student into the JSD program.

Some need-based funding, as well as funding to conduct research and attend conferences is available to admitted JSD students.

Questions concerning the JSD program should be directed to [email protected] .

This highly specialized PhD program offers in-depth and comprehensive coursework in international law.

It is one of the world’s only two doctoral programs in this field offered by an intergovernmental organization constituted under international law (the other being offered by the European University Institute and it is a PhD in Law more generally, with a European emphasis).

EUCLID (Pôle Universitaire Euclide | Euclid University), an international intergovernmental organization with a university mandate, offers to select students from the general public an external (distance or online) degree program called the EUCLID DILT which is a full PhD in International Law and Treaty Law.

In terms of academic progression, EUCLID’s intention is to offer a credible path leading from the LLM (24 credits) to the MSc (additional 12 credits) and finally to the PhD (another 25 credits of coursework or directed studies, followed by the dissertation).

As a public non-profit institution, EUCLID is able to offer affordable, low-tuition programs.

Ambassador Hanna (EUCLID graduate and now faculty member) with the UNESCO Director-General.

Academic Presentation

Thanks to its low tuition and institutional relationships, it is designed to be of special interest to African and Small States students.

Within certain parameters, the curriculum is customizable, with elective courses focusing on:

  • Law of International organizations
  • European law
  • Human rights law
  • Treaty drafting and case studies.

Ph.D. in Law PhD in Law

A Ph.D. requires a minimum of three years' study, at least two years of which comprises work done while in residence at the University of Washington. Students enter the Ph.D. program having already identified a dissertation supervisory chair and additional committee members (referred to as the student’s Doctoral Supervisory Committee), who will support and shepherd them through the Ph.D. curriculum and dissertation writing process.

Ph.D. candidates must complete 90 credits, at least 60 of which must be taken at the University of Washington, in order to receive a doctoral degree.

I. Requirements

Overall course requirements.

Ph.D. students must successfully complete a minimum of 90 credits including at least 60 course credits and 27 dissertation credits (LAW 800—minimum two credit hours per quarter). With the approval of the Ph.D. Program Director and Steering Committee, an appropriate master’s degree from an accredited institution may substitute for up to a maximum of 30 of the course credits.   This determination of substituting master’s credits takes place at the time when the presumptive chair agrees that the Ph.D. student’s prospectus is ready to defend at a General Examination.   The 60 course credits also include courses required by the School of Law as described immediately below.

Required Competencies:

The primary requirement is the production of a dissertation that, in the opinion of the Ph.D. Doctoral Supervisory Committee, represents a novel and significant contribution to the discipline of law. In addition, Ph.D. students are required to demonstrate competencies in four areas:

  • Understanding of common law legal systems and differences between major legal systems around the world.
  • An understanding of a research methodology area relevant to the topic of their dissertation research.
  • Subject matter expertise in the area of their dissertation research.
  • The ability to present and discuss the results of their dissertation research.

An understanding of common law legal systems and differences between major legal systems around the world

This requirement will be satisfied by 8 credits of coursework as follows:

  • Required course: B550 American Legal Systems and Methods (4 credits) or equivalent
  • Additionally, students will have to complete B557 Graduate Writing Seminar (4 credits) or the equivalent to demonstrate understanding of the American legal system.

Research Methodology

Broadly speaking, modern academic legal research is supported by one or more of the following:  jurisprudential approaches, qualitative approaches, quantitative approaches. Competency will be satisfied by at least 3-4 credits of coursework as follows, chosen in consultation with the supervisory chair:

  • PPM 502 Research Design (4)
  • EDPSY 586 Qualitative Methods of Educational Research I (4 credits)
  • ARCH 567 Qualitative Research Methods (3)
  • CS&SS 536 Analysis of Categorical and Count Data (3)
  • LAWA 595 Jurisprudence and Moral Philosophy (4)

Elective courses: Law A599 Legal Research Methods (3 credits), Law   A 549 Advanced Legal Research   (4 Credits)

Subject Matter Expertise (10-12 credits of subject discipline required courses)

The remaining courses to fulfill the credit requirement are to be chosen based on the Ph.D. student’s dissertation research topic. For instance, students with a focus on intellectual property must complete that discipline’s required courses. The same is true for sustainable international development, health law, etc.

Presentation/Discussion Competency

The presentation/discussion competency will be satisfied by successful completion of the general and final examination process described below.

Other Requirements

Law 600 tutorial with supervisory chair (1-2 credits per quarter).

In addition to the above requirements, students are expected to take 1-2 Law 600 credits with their supervisory chair per quarter to facilitate regular communication during the time leading up to their general exam. The chair will monitor the student’s academic progress and advise on appropriate courses to be taken (at the law school and in other departments on campus) related to the Ph.D. student’s research.

First- and Second-Year Elective Courses

All Ph.D. students are expected and encouraged to take subject-matter courses relevant to their dissertation research topic as part of their 60 credits of coursework. There is a rich variety of courses available in the School of Law and in other schools and departments across the University of Washington campus. For example, the   Graduate School has a variety of graduate certificate programs   that not only may be pertinent to student’s research interests but may provide an additional credential to enhance a student’s academic portfolio.

II. General Examination

Completion of 60 course credits (up to 30 credits from an accredited LL.M. or other pertinent master's degree may be counted toward the 90-credit total) and a Dissertation Prospectus approved by the Doctoral Supervisory Committee are required prior to this exam.

Students must pass an oral   General Examination   designed around individualized readings determined in consultation with the student’s Doctoral Supervisory Committee, and a Dissertation Prospectus that contains the student’s detailed dissertation study plans, including research questions and the chosen methodology and study plan to answer them.

To be eligible for the General Exam, the student must have completed a minimum of 60 course credits (including credits being taken the quarter of the exam) of which at least 18 credits must be at the 500 level and above. Numerical grades must be received in at least 18 quarter credits of coursework taken at the University of Washington. The Graduate School accepts numerical grades in department approved 400-level courses accepted as part of the major and in 500-level courses (this excludes 499 credits).

Students are required to write and successfully defend a Dissertation Prospectus that outlines a detailed plan for the Ph.D. dissertation. The General Examination tests the student’s understanding of, and facility with, the scholarly literature that relates to the proposed dissertation topic, along with the strength of the proposed research proposal and its design.

III. Final Examination (Doctoral Defense)

In addition to a successful General Examination, the Ph.D. candidate must complete at least 27 dissertation credits over a period of at least three quarters. Candidates total credit count must reach 90 and they must have completed their doctoral dissertation.

To complete the degree, the candidate must complete a   Dissertation Defense   (also known as the   Final Examination ) administered by the Supervisory Doctoral Committee and devoted to the presentation and defense of the dissertation. It should be noted that the Graduate School requires a cumulative 3.0 GPA to obtain a graduate degree. For the final Dissertation Defense, students must get their committee members’ signatures on the UW Graduate School Doctoral Dissertation Reading Committee Approval form and submit that before the end of the quarter (the form will be provided at or prior to the student’s defense and submission instructions are on the form). More detailed information is on the Ph.D. Program’s Canvas page.

Students must be registered and may not be on leave during the quarter that the General and Final Examinations are taken.

After a successful Final Examination, the dissertation must be submitted in the required format to the University of Washington Graduate School by 11:59 p.m. PST on the  last day of the quarter . The PhD Candidate must be registered and may not be on leave during the quarter that the dissertation is submitted.

The requirements may be adjusted for students with law degrees.

Law PhD by Distance Learning

What is a phd by distance learning.

A PhD by Distance Learning allows you to undertake the majority of your research at an off-campus location. You are therefore able to do the research required for your PhD in a location of your choosing; only making one annual visit to the University.

Why study by distance learning?

The main advantage of studying by distance learning is the opportunity to undertake research supervised by one of our world-renowned academics without having to relocate geographically to the Birmingham region. The flexibility offered by distance learning will allow you to combine study with other commitments, including work and family.

Is the distance learning route for you?

The distance learning route to PhD study is not for everyone. You need to have a very clear idea of your research project and be able to motivate yourself. Undertaking PhD study off campus can sometimes be quite isolating, so the ability to proactively seek out connections from within relevant research communities is important. This route is well-suited to those who have a project associated with their work or particular interests and where resources are available locally to support your research e.g. appropriate archives and data collections.

Can I study by Distance Learning in the UK?

Distance Learning courses can be undertaken from anywhere in the world, including the UK.

However, it is worth noting that supervisory sessions for Distance Learning students will take place via audiovisual communications, such as Skype or Facetime, rather than in person.

While this 21st Century approach has proved effective, for those applicants who would prefer to visit the campus for face-to-face meetings with their supervisor, the traditional part-time study option would be more appropriate.

  • One return economy flight per year for the required two-week campus visit in September
  • Accommodation at the University for the required two-week campus visit in September
  • One return economy flight at the end of the study period for the three-day PhD viva examination
  • Accommodation at the University for the three-day viva examination

How will I be supported?

You will receive the same level of support and supervision as on-campus students. The only difference is that supervisory sessions will take place via audio and visual communication services such as Skype or Facetime, rather than in person.

When would I start?

We encourage you to start your PhD in the month of September so that you can attend an induction along with other PhD candidates beginning their research at the same time as you. However, other arrangements may be possible with agreement from your supervisor.

How often will I need to be on campus?

Although you may be able to undertake the majority of your study at an off-campus location, you will be fully funded to make one compulsory visit to the University per year of study. This will enable you to meet your supervisory team, undertake intensive research skills training and make a start on your doctoral studies. You will then be invited to attend the University for annual meetings which will give you the opportunity to interact with other doctoral students both socially and academically, undertake important progress meetings and carry out necessary training. You will also generally be required to be present on campus for your viva voce.

Am I eligible?

Before we can offer you a place it is important that you have agreement from your potential supervisor and that they are satisfied that you will be able to undertake the PhD on an off-campus basis. This may mean that slightly different entry requirements apply, such as English language and more extensive research skills training. Agreements will also need to be reached regarding some of the more practical aspects of undertaking the PhD in this way (for example attendance requirements, suitability of the chosen residency etc). It is important that arrangements are discussed early so that all parties involved know what to expect and to ensure you are able to successfully complete your studies.

What Can I Do With a Juris Doctor Degree?

What Can I Do With a Juris Doctor Degree

Strong long-term demand for law school graduates makes the Juris Doctor degree an attractive credential. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ( BLS ) projects a 10% growth in jobs for lawyers from 2021 to 2031. A wave of retirements after years of the pandemic along with an ongoing need for legal expertise drives this demand.

As you consider your career options, you may wonder what you can do with a Juris Doctor degree. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to a legal career as there are many career options with law degrees. Let’s start by distinguishing the Juris Doctor degree from other law degrees.

Comparing Law Degree Options

The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) notes that the Juris Doctor is “the first professional law degree required to practice law in the United States.” Attorneys—or lawyers who represent clients in court—need Juris Doctor degrees as prerequisites for state bar admission. Lawyers use their Juris Doctor education for tasks outside of the courtroom including research and legal advice.

You’ll likely come across other degrees as you research legal education options. The Master of Laws (LLM) is a post-Juris Doctor option for graduates who want to specialize in specific areas of law. The Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) is the terminal degree for lawyers who want to pursue academic research and tenure-track faculty roles.

The common prerequisite for these non-Juris Doctor options is the completion of a Juris Doctor degree. Advanced skills learned in law school courses translate well into the workplace without an LLM or SJD. The value of a Juris Doctor degree was shown by a 91.9% employment rate for 2021 graduates, a 14-year high as measured by the National Association of Law Placement ( NALP ).

What Can You Do With a Law Degree?

Attorney jobs can be financially lucrative as well as personally fulfilling. The BLS found a median salary of $127,990 for lawyers in May 2021 with the top 10% of earners making more than $208,000. These salaries far outpace the average for all jobs ($45,760) and other legal professions ($82,430).

A 2022 American Bar Association (ABA) survey found that 74% of respondents worked in private practice. Governments (8%) and corporations (7%) were runners-up for the most common employers for lawyers. Let’s look at what you can do with your Juris Doctor degree once you’ve entered the workforce.

Private Practice

The term private practice encompasses solo practices as well as jobs with law firms. The ABA’s survey identified that two-thirds of private practice respondents worked in law firms and one-third ran their own practices. Law school graduates should consider the benefits of each path as they seek employment.

Law firms employ lawyers to represent clients ranging from individuals to businesses. These attorney jobs tend to be more secure than solo practices given steady business found through referrals and firm reputation. There are also advancement and professional development opportunities that can lead to higher salaries.

Solo practices allow lawyers to pursue their entrepreneurial spirit and represent a broad range of clients. A solo practitioner can also build their own brand and pivot into areas of interest over time. There is also a great deal of flexibility for lawyers in private practice when adopting new billing, marketing and technology.

Corporations around the world employ in-house counsel to navigate the complexities of contracts and regulations. A company’s legal team spends most of its time reviewing documents and drafting advice for corporate leaders. The responsibilities of a corporate counsel include:

  • Addressing requests for legal advice or services by departments
  • Advising executives about their responsibilities to directors and shareholders
  • Providing advice about corporate mergers and acquisitions
  • Responding to lawsuits brought against the company
  • Understanding the impacts of proposed regulations

Corporate counsel jobs allow business-minded lawyers to learn about all aspects of corporate operations. The daily influx of legal questions ensures that each day presents an opportunity for professional growth. In-house counsels also acquire skills and insights that are valuable when seeking new jobs.

Local, State and Federal Government

The question of what you can do with a Juris Doctor degree may stem from an interest in public service. A 2018 AALS survey of undergraduates found that 44% of respondents viewed law degrees as paths to jobs in government or politics. Law school graduates who want to serve their communities can find work as:

  • Assistant attorneys general with state Departments of Justice
  • Municipal attorneys
  • Policy directors for state and federal legislators
  • State and federal public defenders

Lawyers in public service roles build and enforce laws from sound legal principles. Their commitment to professional conduct means fair and ethical approaches to the public good. Government agencies and political offices always need to fill roles with skilled lawyers, thus creating consistent demand for new talent.

Earning a Juris Doctor Degree

Law schools aren’t created equal even if they offer similar courses and experiential opportunities. A law school’s reputation and academic rigor boost the value of its Juris Doctor degree. You should know what to expect from a program and how to find the right law school for your needs.

The Basics of a Juris Doctor Degree

The typical law degree requires three years of full-time study. Traditional law schools may also offer part-time Juris Doctor degrees requiring at least four years of study. No matter the program, first-year students learn the ins and outs of the law in courses like:

  • Legal Writing
  • Property Law

Law schools help second-year and third-year students find areas of specialization with an expanded curriculum. Juris Doctor candidates are expected to build experience through moot courts, law journals and legal clinics. The theoretical underpinnings of law combined with real-world experiences prepare graduates for legal careers.

ABA Standards for Certification

The ABA certifies law schools based on their adherence to high standards of legal education. The organization’s 2022-2023 Standards and Rules of Procedure note that certified schools prepare graduates “for effective, ethical, and responsible participation as members of the legal profession.” Approved law schools achieve these goals with a curriculum that:

  • Instills professional responsibilities and ethics
  • Provides opportunities for field placements and public service
  • Trains students on bias, cross-cultural competency and racism

These standards show that a Juris Doctor degree is not just about learning the law but also the profession’s role in society. Law school graduates understand the concept of justice as well as the intricacies of the justice system. Cleveland State University opens doors to the full spectrum of Juris Doctor jobs with its Online JD program.

Earning a Juris Doctor at Cleveland State University

Cleveland State University College of Law’s Online JD takes an innovative approach to legal education. Online didactic coursework can be completed around your work schedule in 10 semesters of part-time study. Students learn advanced legal research skills from over 90 credits of coursework and hundreds of experiential hours at an ABA-approved law school .

Few other law schools in the United States replicate this program’s format. CSU College of Law’s national reputation for academic excellence makes the Online Juris Doctor even more appealing. U.S. News & World Report ranked the school No. 39 in Part-Time Law Schools and the No. 1 Part-Time Law Program in Ohio.

Semester In Practice

View the april 11, 2023, semester-in-practice and city semester orientation video here..

Second- and third-year students are afforded a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in exceptional judicial, governmental, public interest and select private law offices for an intense semester-long placement experience. Under the direct supervision of highly experienced supervising attorney/mentors, students will spend 33 hours per week participating in and conducting the legal work of their chosen office. In prior years, students have worked at such placements as the White House, Pfizer, the New York Police Department, in the chambers of federal judges, the Federal Defender Service of Tennessee, and the New York Attorney General’s Office.

Depending on the placement, students may be involved in witness interviewing, trial preparation, legal research and writing, drafting of opinions, fact investigation, depositions and conducting trials or hearings. Students participate in the related field placement class, maintain a journal of their placement experiences, and meet periodically with the faculty member who supervises the program. Students receive twelve academic credits for their supervised field work, contemporaneous clinic class, journals and other faculty assignments. Students interested in SIP are encouraged to contact Professor Ray Brescia.

Semester-in-Practice Placements

Michelle Frankel

Michelle Frankel Class Year: 2015 Employment: Associate, Martin Clearwater & Bell Semester-in-Practice Placement: Pfizer

Interning at Pfizer on the Worldwide Public Affairs and Policy Team as part of the Semester-in-Practice program was a unique learning experience because I was deeply immersed in the legal work of an international corporation. I worked on issue briefs about timely topics such as how the pharmaceutical industry can and cannot use social media, and drafted commentary on rules proposed by the Federal Drug Administration. These experiences enabled me to learn about the pharmaceutical industry hands on and explore the potential role of a lawyer in a non-traditional legal job.

Fabienne Lamarre

Fabienne Lamarre Class Year: 2019 Semester-in-Practice Placement: New York City Administration for Children's Services

The Semester-in-Practice program instantly placed me at an advantage because I did not have to compete with other law students in a manner that I would have in a summer internship. As the only legal intern in my office, I worked with several attorneys resulting in the exposure to a wealth of legal work that included research and writing, fact investigation, conducting hearings, and policy review.  Furthermore, as the only intern, I received one-on-one, detailed feedback on each assignment, which strengthened my research and writing skills immensely.

The Semester-in-Practice program is such a unique opportunity because you get an inside glimpse of how the law is actually applied in practice as opposed to an academic setting. More importantly, the program affords you the opportunity to not only practice in a legal field of interest but also in the geographical setting of choice, without the long-term commitment. Ultimately, my Semester-in-Practice was truly an immeasurable experience that I wholeheartedly encourage all students to consider during their law school career.

Stephanie Minerley

Stephanie Minerley Class Year: 2018 Employment:   Court Attorney, New York Court of Appeals Semester-in-Practice Placement: Empire Justice Center

I chose to do a Semester-in-Practice as a reminder to myself that the law we learn in the classroom has real-world applications.

Not only did working for a semester freshen my perspective but it provided an invaluable experience.  Namely, I fell in love with a new field of law, I made close friends with local attorneys, the classroom component helped me pass the MPRE, and the semester became a major talking point at my interviews for post-graduate employment.

As an additional bonus, because the course is less reading intensive, and more practical, I was able to spend more quality time with my son on the weekends during this semester.  Overall, taking a Semester-in-Practice course was a defining part of my legal career and I highly recommend the experience.

Alexis Osborne

Alexis Osborne Class Year: 2016 Employment: Assistant County Attorney, Schenectady County Attorney's Office Semester-in-Practice Placement: The White House

In the spring of 2015, I had the privilege of doing a Semester-in-Practice at the White House, working directly for President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. During my Semester-in-Practice, I had the unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience, build leadership skills, and strengthen my understanding of the workings of government, including but not limited to the Executive Office.

Unlike a traditional semester spent in the classroom, I, instead, was able to work every day directly in the White House and put all of the skills and information that I had learned in law school for the previous two years to use in a professional environment that had lasting impact on the American people. Anytime I needed guidance or had a question, the professor of the Albany Law Semester-in-Practice program was there to assist and provide the guidance while I was over 500 miles away–showing how much he wanted his students to succeed. I always felt connected to the law school community, but at the same time, was able to gain an experience comparable to no other.

The Albany Law Semester-in-Practice program set me up for success while preparing me for future public service opportunities. I currently work as a government law attorney in Schenectady, N.Y., and this would not have been possible without my experience gained through the Albany Law Semester-in-Practice program!

Kellan Potts

Kellan Potts Class Year: 2016 Employment: Associate, O'Connell & Aronowitz Semester-in-Practice Placement: Federal Defenders Services of Eastern Tennessee

In the second semester of my 2L year, I was afforded the opportunity to partake in Albany Law School's Semester-in-Practice program. I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, it was the best experience I had in law school. I was placed in the Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee's office in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Immediately I was able to obtain a practice order with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit which allowed me to go to court and help the other attorneys with the defense of indigent federal defendants. I was also able to work on all aspects of federal criminal defense, from intake interviews with clients, to the final sentencing memoranda and hearings. My supervisors at the Federal Defenders took great care to introduce me to the finer points of federal criminal defense and even took me to events across the state for meetings with other federal defenders. In no way did my time consist of busy work.

In addition to the work I did with the Federal Defenders, the Semester-in-Practice program consisted of weekly conversations with the Semester-in-Practice instructor and the other participants in the program. The conversations helped to clarify any questions or concerns I had with the placement or what I should be doing.

I currently practice criminal law, both state and federal, and can honestly say that my time in the Semester-in-Practice program cemented what I wanted to do with my career. I did not know I wanted to practice criminal defense before I did this program, but my time in the Semester-in-Practice program showed me my true path in the law. My experiences were incredibly helpful and informative when making decisions about my future career. I cannot recommend the Semester-in-Practice program highly enough. It is beyond valuable, and shines on a resume once you start looking for future jobs. I recommend every law student partake in this program. Its value is immeasurable.

Alison Shimel

Alison Shimel Class Year: 2019 Employment: Cooley, Shrair P.C. (after graduation) Semester-in-Practice Placement: City Solicitor’s Office, City of Springfield, Mass.

I worked at the City Solicitor’s Office at the City of Springfield in Massachusetts, which is my home town. This was really convenient for me in that I was able to live closer to home and start to develop my contacts with the practicing bar in the community where I want to work after graduation. While that was certainly convenient for me, my placement itself proved to be wonderful training, and ended up advancing my career. Being able to work at my Semester-in-Practice placement full time was such an invaluable experience. Working full time enabled me to attend a federal civil rights trial from start to finish and also allowed me to play a large part in preparing for the trial. At my placement, I was able to attend numerous hearings, depositions, and client meetings that I wouldn’t have been able to participate in if I was only working at my placement part time. In addition, just being in Springfield every day also helped me land my post-graduation job. I was able to rub elbows every day with practicing attorneys in the community and this ultimately led to a job interview, which then led to a job offer, and I will be starting at the firm of Cooley, Shrair P.C., as soon as I’m done studying for the bar. For these reasons, I would strongly encourage everyone at Albany Law School to take advantage of this great opportunity to get practical experience in a full-time placement.

Kesi St. Louis

Kesi St. Louis Class Year: 2017 Employment: Associate, Quintairos, Prieto, Wood, & Boyer, P.A. Semester-in-Practice Placement: State Attorney's Office, State of Florida

My Semester-in-Practice was an incredibly important semester for me, as I got a glimpse of the kind of future I might want to lead.  I chose to work in the State Attorney's Office in Florida, which is where I planned to move and work after graduation.  My experience showed me what it would be like to work as an assistant state attorney: participating in jury trials, arraignments, pre-trial conferences, motions, bench trials, violation of probation hearings and negotiating plea dispositions with opposing counsel.  The Semester-in-Practice program allowed me to get my foot in the door, continually refine my legal skills and grow my professional network.  This was an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional growth and development.  I cannot say enough good things about my experience and although there were many classes in law school I genuinely enjoyed, my Semester-in-Practice was one of the most memorable.

Sanral university tour presents opportunities to ufs students.

Dudley Mbambo

The University of the Free State’s (UFS’s) Faculty of Education , in partnership with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) , recently hosted the SANRAL University Tour, which provided UFS students with valuable insights into and opportunities in road engineering.

The event that recently took place at the Equitas Auditorium on the Bloemfontein Campus was themed ‘Engineering your future through roads’.

Some of the opportunities outlined to students included bursary opportunities, learnerships, and internships.

Dudley Mbambo , SANRAL Eastern Region Operations and Maintenance Manager, said he wished he had been exposed to SANRAL opportunities while he was still a student. “The agency requires a diverse range of skills, creating opportunities for learnerships and internships not only in STEM fields but also in areas like law, finance, and communications. The government funds these opportunities through networks such as VAT and tolls.”

Mbambo also highlighted that with the advent of the fourth industrial revolution and ongoing innovation, there is a growing need for skills to develop applications like Smart Mobility . This app addresses challenges and opportunities related to transport systems, infrastructure, transport operations, and logistics management, supporting industrial and sustainable development. He also mentioned Vala Zonke , an initiative that helps communities report potholes.

SANRAL Research Chair in Science and Mathematics Education

Prof Loyiso Jita , Dean of the Faculty of Education and SANRAL Research Chair in Science and Mathematics Education, said that since the inception of the Research Chair in 2014, the chair has produced about 40 PhD graduates in science, math and technology education across South Africa, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe.

“The opportunities in the SANRAL Research Chair help to empower our students in multiple ways,” Prof Jita said. “Not only do we offer a range of experiences for postgraduate students, but we also employ our undergraduates as research assistants, guiding them towards becoming skilled researchers in the future. This developmental approach of the Chair has yielded significant returns on investment; for example, one of our PhD graduates is the current Free State Member of the Executive Council for Education. This success demonstrates that our impact extends beyond the university, positively influencing and empowering our government and society.”

An incredible learning journey

SANRAL Junior Project Engineer Nokuthula Mazibuko studied through a SANRAL bursary and encouraged UFS students to take advantage of the bursary options available. She said she has grown immensely through hands-on experience and mentorship, gaining invaluable insights into the industry. “It was an incredible journey to be where I am today,” she said. “Although funding doesn’t guarantee employment, it exposes you to various professionals and allows you to compete for employment.”

Besides job opportunities, SANRAL offers a range of opportunities to high school learners and university students, including:

• Internships.

Mbambo reminded students that a SANRAL reorganisation includes opening an office in Bloemfontein, which means there will be more SANRAL employment opportunities within the Free State.

Last day on the Golfo

The little lizards in the woods of PuntAla are sad.  All the beautiful people and their even more beautiful boats have gone.  There is something profoundly sad about a venue after a major event happened.  The excitement, the drama, the laughter, the arguing, the banter, the buzz, all gone.

F1x A-class foiling catamaran

World champion, lighter = better, craftsmanship, meet the foiling f1x a-class catamaran.

This is the ultimate singlehanded foiling catamaran of the moment: ultramodern, incredibly fast, very agile, extremely strong and feather-light, in an aerodynamic and ergonomic design.

We build your new foiling boat!

Technical details.

The F1x A-class foiling catamaran has a number of unique features that improve performance. For example:

  • Semi ridged trampoline. Gives extra torsional stiffness to the boat and increases its aerodynamic characteristics.
  • Patented main-sheet-wheel-system. For more direct and faster trim of the main sail.
  • Aerodynamically placed traveller car.
  • Flexible daggerboard casings. For minimal water absorption in floating mode.
  • Aerodynamically shaped ‘beams’.
  • Adjustable T-rudders. Foiling with rudder differential is possible.

Catamaran

  • Che cos’è un catamarano?

Catamarano Classe A

Fantastico!

Catamaran classe A d'occasion

Les Classe A d'occasion reste assez chers pour des productions récentes, cependant, si l'on cherche un catamaran pour des navigations davantage tournées vers le loisir que la performance : la facture sera nettement moins salée.
