Feadship Information Worth Knowing

Shipyard spotlight Feadship

With a population of just 17 million people, The Netherlands has an outsized influence on the Global Yachting stage, with the highest number of world class yacht builders per capita than any other nation, all wedged into a country smaller than the size of West Virginia.

Dutch Yacht Building

Founded after WWII in 1949, to help re-ignite the Dutch Yacht building industry, it was a marketing initiative aimed at the US market and was initially formed by Henri de Voogt, a naval architect, in association with Van Lent and De Vries family boat yards.  By 1968 there were 7 companies in Feadship, including the original 3 companies.

Today, Feadship consists of the 2 original founding shipyards, plusde Voogt the Naval Architecture and Engineering firm Feadship have acquired a lot of their original sub-contracting companies, to bring a lot of the disciplines “in-house”, with a combined work force of some 2,300+ workers.

Both companies received their “Royal” Dutch designations, which means continuous lineage and operation of 100 years – thus now Royal De Vries (designation in 2006) and Royal Van Lent (in 2001). The Van Lent company was sold to LVMH in 2001, while Royal De Vries still remains in the family.

It is quite remarkable that 2 privately and separately owned companies, still manage to maintain a common public persona and intimately coordinate sales and logistics after all these decades.

De Vries Yard

Currently De Vries operates 2 yacht building facilities –  the original facility, located in the small town of Aalsmeer, just south of Amsterdam, consists of 50,000m2/538,000ft2 of construction sheds and has launched the 92m “Aquarius” in 2016, the largest yacht built at the facility . Actually it is not so much length that restricts the size of construction at this yard, but beam, which due to the size of locks that have to be navigated to get the vessels to sea.

feadship yacht meaning

The 2 nd facility operated by De Vries is located in Makkum, an hours drive north of Amsterdam, which was purchased from Amels/Damen Shipyards in 2005. This facility, located on 17+ acres of land, boasts a drydock and building shed of some 170m/557’ in length and is capable of building yachts of 120m+ and indeed is where De Vries has launched its largest yachts from  – the largest to date is “Madame Gu” at 99m, which was launched in 2013, however there is a 110m vessel under construction that is due for delivery late 2018.

feadship yacht meaning

Yacht yards use “yard build numbers” to initially refer to the new builds, which of course can be used to trace the history of each vessel. De Vries use 2 different numbering systems to differentiate between the 2 yards, with vessels being built at Makkum started with yard #1001 (launched as “Ocean Victory”, now “Ebony Shine”).

While at the Aalsmeer facility, the company is up to yard number #701, a 51m Explorer vessel.

Royal Van Lent Yard

The original facility, located at  De Kaag Island, a small village south of Amsetrdam, dates back to 1849! This facility has built the longest Feadship launched to date – “Symphony” at 101.5m/333’, in 2015, for the Chairman of LVMH. Royal Van Lent is building a new facility in Amsterdam, which will be capable of building the largest Feadship’s (up to 160m/525’). Consisting of a 170m dock/shed, the facility is due for completion in 2019 and is already rumored to be the site for construction of a 118m yacht, the biggest in Dutch yacht building history. More information on Feadship’s new facility here .

feadship yacht meaning

Feadship currently have 17 vessels at various stages, in construction, (10 at De Vries and 7 at Van Lent), across the 3 (soon to be 4) facilities and like most yards use a combination of sub-contractors and interior disciplines to build their yachts. As previously stated, over the years the companies have acquired a number of their major sub-contractors:

Scheepswerf Slob – A steel hull and aluminum metal fabrication facility

Van der Loo interiors (although the majority of interior refitting is still carried out by independent, high end yacht furniture companies, such as List and  Struik & Hammerslag)

Akerboom Yacht Equipment – manufacturers of Cranes, davits, gangways, passarelles, hatches and hinged platforms, etc.

While some disciplines are outsourced, the combined companies are predominantly Dutch and virtually everything is “bespoke” (custom built), right down to the hinges for doors, which are custom manufactured in house!

feadship yacht meaning

Most Feadships are custom designed and built as “one off” vessels, specifically for each individual client and offer a very varied cross section of styles and performance, from large steel displacement yachts to a 49m – 30kt all aluminum yacht currently in build at De Vries.

feadship yacht meaning

However over the years Feadship have built several “lines” of “semi custom” vessels – i.e. vessels with a common hull, superstructure and engineering package, but an ability to customize the interior décor/layout. This includes the 45m series F45 (5 were launched). The latest model – the recently delivered 34m/111-113’ series motoryachts, the smallest Feadships being delivered for many years. The company only went ahead with this project when an existing client, who owned a larger Feadship asked them to build a smaller vessel. The company said they would, if the client could persuade 3 of his friends to also build a boat using the same platform! To date the company has built 5 x 34m yachts, the first being delivered in 2016.

feadship yacht meaning

While Feadship builds their yachts for customers around the world, their most important single consistent market, is still the USA, with some 50+ % of their production being sold into the States on a regular basis.

Feadship Yachts’ History

Feadship Yachts

After World War II, the market for pleasure yachts in Europe was almost non-existent. Several enterprising Dutch yacht builders came together in 1949, joining with De Voogt Naval Architects to form an export association for the express purpose of marketing to American clients. The association, named Feadship (an acronym for First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders), officially launched in 1951 at the New York Boat Show. A flurry of orders swiftly followed, and by the mid-1950’s Feadship was building a steady stream of steel and aluminum yachts.

During the 1960’s, Feadship Yachts’ reputation for excellence steadily grew, as did the size of the vessels the company was producing. By the early 1970’s Feadship was launching several yachts a year and had firmly established itself as one of the top custom-built yacht companies. A series of prominent clients and famous Feadship fans, including Henry Ford and Malcolm Forbes, served to burnish Feadship’s reputation and increase the company’s global presence.

Feadship encompasses several yards and one naval design firm, bearing the leading names in Dutch shipbuilding. Van Lent shipyard, which began building ships in 1849, is now solely dedicated to building the finest custom-built motoryachts. Family-run Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw, founded in 1906, is an integrated group of companies that employs some 800 craftsmen in steel and aluminum construction, engineering, and the various outfitting and finishing disciplines.

DeVoogt Naval Architects, famous for its revolutionary concept designs, is home to a specialist team expert in every discipline of yacht engineering and design. Rounding out the Dutch shipbuilding family is De Vries Makkum yard, which joined Feadship in August 2005 with a highly skilled, 250-man strong team that oversees refits and Feadship maintenance. Feadship Yachts produces an average of five major craft a year, reigning as one of the world’s finest producers of exceptional custom-built craft, continually positioned at the forefront of innovations in both technology and design.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Superyacht builder

Headquartered in the Netherlands, Feadship is an iconic shipyard that partners with owners across every continent. They often describe building a Feadship as one of the most thrilling – and fun – experiences of their life.

There are several key reasons why Feadship has achieved this iconic status. Firstly, it builds purely custom superyachts. What does this mean? In a nutshell, every yacht the yard builds is totally unique. Clients arrive with a vision, and Feadship starts with a blank sheet of paper to translate that vision into bespoke reality. Another key factor is Feadship’s experience, gained from a pedigree dating back to the 1800s. ‘Feadship’ is short for the First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders, and was established in 1949 when the founding family shipyards of De Vries and Van Lent and naval architect De Voogt came together to pitch their high-quality yachts to the American market.

Feadship Lonian Superyacht

It’s not easy to keep a 285-foot superyacht under wraps for a whole year, but Feadship has managed to do exactly that. The Dutch yard has kept showstopper Lonian hidden since her launch in 2019, but now it’s finally ready to show her off.

The vessel was kept secret at the request of the owners, who wanted to enjoy a full year of private cruising without any publicity. That feat was relatively easy to achieve since the superyacht is packed with everything you could ever want or need, and has been specifically designed for life at sea.

In fact, Lonian spends little time moored in marinas and instead cruises the world with a “flotilla” of toys and tenders, plus a 217-foot support vessel that carries additional equipment and a crew of 22.

With exteriors penned by Sinot , Lonian sports a deep blue hull and dramatic bow, and is surprisingly slimline given her size. She features extensive glass and stainless steel for a decidedly modern feel.

“She has the presence and stance of a beefy motoryacht while retaining an elegant and slender air,” the yard said.

But let’s talk about life onboard. Her knockout feature is an utterly unique glass swimming pool located aft. It has a translucent bottom that doubles as the ceiling of the beach club below and a built-in movie screen integrated into the edge of the pool, because why not?

Not to be outdone, her automated swim platform on the transom hatch opens and closes like the roof of a convertible car. The teak hatch opens first, and the aft door descends before the hatch closes again, leaving no visible sign of a threshold or door.

Elsewhere, the expansive foredeck on the owner’s deck has a jacuzzi with bespoke cooling and heating functionality. This was specifically requested by the exacting owners, who like relaxing in the chilled plunge pool after a sweat sesh at the bridge deck gym.

Lonian features 22 different openings—platforms, hatches and doors—which creates a seamless outdoor-indoor flow and allows guests to easily access the surrounding waters. If further exploration is required, there’s also an Airbus ACH145 helicopter on board.

The interiors, penned by Sinot and Richard Hallberg Interior Design , remain private, but Feadship did reveal there is a glass elevator to serve all five decks and an epic lounge with full-beam panoramic views. The vessel can sleep a total of 14 guests across seven cabins, including an owner’s stateroom, four generous guest staterooms and two VIP suites. There are also 15 crew cabins and one captain’s cabin.

The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Feadship Yacht

If you’re in the market for a high-end yacht, Feadship is undoubtedly a name you’ve encountered. Known for their impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail, Feadship yachts are considered some of the finest vessels on the water. But before you dive into the world of Feadship yacht ownership, there are a few things you need to know. In this ultimate guide to buying a new or used Feadship yacht for sale, we’ll cover everything from the buying process to maintenance and more.

Feadship Yachts for Sale: What Sets Them Apart

First, it’s essential to understand what sets Feadship yachts apart from other luxury vessels. Founded in 1849, Feadship has a long history of building custom yachts to the highest standards. Each yacht is designed and built entirely in-house, ensuring complete control over the process from start to finish. Feadship yachts are known for their exceptional quality and attention to detail, with every aspect of the vessel carefully considered and crafted to perfection. From the exterior design to the interior finishes and everything in between, Feadship yachts for sale are true works of art.

New Feadship Yachts for Sale

When buying a Feadship yacht, you have a few options. You can opt for a new yacht for sale or a used one. Let’s start with new yachts. Feadship offers a range of custom yacht designs, so you can work with the company to create a vessel that meets your specific needs and desires. The process typically begins with a consultation to discuss your requirements and preferences, followed by the design phase, during which you’ll work closely with Feadship’s team of designers to create a bespoke yacht that reflects your vision. Once the design is finalized, construction can begin, typically taking around two to three years.

The Cost of a New Feadship Yacht for Sale

Investing in a new Feadship yacht represents a significant financial commitment. Prices can vary depending on factors such as size and complexity, with new vessels often commanding tens of millions of dollars. If a new yacht exceeds your budget, exploring used options is worth considering. Despite being pre-owned, Feadship yachts maintain their value remarkably well, though they typically come with a lower price tag compared to new models.

Used Feadship Yachts for Sale

You must do your due diligence when shopping for a used Feadship yacht for sale. You’ll want to work with a reputable broker who specializes in Feadship yachts and can guide you through the buying process. Brokers typically have access to a network of owners and other brokers, so they can help you find a suitable vessel for your needs. They’ll also be able to provide you with information on the history of the yacht, including any previous owners, maintenance records, and more.

Conducting a Thorough Survey

Once you’ve found a Feadship yacht that meets your requirements and budget, the next step is to conduct a thorough survey. This is an essential part of the buying process, as it allows you to identify any issues with the vessel before purchasing. A survey typically includes thoroughly inspecting the hull, engines, and other systems and a sea trial to ensure the yacht is in good working order. If the survey reveals any issues, you may be able to negotiate the price or request that the seller make repairs before the sale is finalized.

Maintenance and Care

When you’ve completed the purchase of your Feadship yacht for sale, it’s essential to maintain it properly to ensure it stays in top condition. Feadship yachts are built to last, but like any other vessel, they require regular maintenance to ensure they remain in optimal condition. Maintenance can include everything from regular cleaning and detailing to engine servicing and repairs. Working with a qualified yacht maintenance company, such as Miami International Yacht Sales, specializing in Feadship yachts, is important to ensure your vessel receives the care and attention it deserves.

Feadship C concept yacht

Feadship announces 75m superyacht concept powered entirely by fuel cells

Dutch yard Feadship has announced a new, 75-metre concept known as C, with full details to be revealed at this year's Monaco Yacht Show . The superyacht has been designed by Studio de Voogt to commemorate Feadship's 75th Diamond Anniversary.

C is inspired by the design of a diamond and how its facets reflect and magnify light, which manifests in the use of glazing to "draw light deep into the yacht's interior". Her hull shape and fully electric propulsion system marks an evolution from the shipyard's concept Breathe, revealed in 2010 and the award-winning Savannah .

This concept is predicted to be "30 per cent more efficient than a typical 75-metre yacht", according to Feadship, with dual shafts, propellers, rudders and an underwater profile tailored to produce less wake. The yacht will also follow on from Feadship's ground-breaking Project 821 by drawing 100 per cent of her power needs from fuel cells directly running on methanol and complimented by lithium-metal batteries.

Other "innovations" on board C are the partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge, to be used at anchor or underway, a beach club with sea-level dining, a duplex owner’s suite and an articulating crow’s nest rising from a private observation deck. A pair of infinity-edge hexagonal pools match the shapes of various seating areas and the atrium.

The new concept also follows on from an earlier concept, Pure, and the recently-delivered Ulysses with a fully digital command centre and navigation hub that includes "the latest in intelligent situational awareness technology with cameras and data fusion".

The yacht is expected to reach a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. Additional power for the hotel load will be generated passively by two pairs of wave-actuated fins that fold out from the hull aft of the anchors.

Feadship latest Concept Design celebrates an important milestone

One of the most anticipated moments of the annual Monaco Yacht Show is the unveiling of Feadship’s latest concept design. Much more than a rendering, this 75-metre design showcases innovative technologies within stunning exterior design and forward-looking interior styling. This year, in honour of the 75 th Diamond Anniversary of the brand, Feadship’s Studio De Voogt presents its latest gem, C . The name derives from the symbol for carbon on the periodic table, carbon being the basis of diamonds, and a little play on words see and sea.

Inspired by how a cut diamond’s patterns reflect and magnify light, C sparkles with innovations and dazzles with mesmerizing angles. But more than just generating an unforgettable profile, these facets amid broad expanses of glass draw light deep into the yacht’s interior, turning the centre of circulation for owner and guests into a light-filled gallery and unprecedently fluid living space.

This design also blurs the separation of decks with the fore and aft section of each offset by a half-level, smoothly transitioning to the next lifestyle area be it up or down. Opening the centre of the yacht to an atrium with floating stars and a lift without walls must be seen to be appreciated! It is truly a flash of brilliance.

Other design innovations onboard C are the partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge that can be used at anchor or underway, a beach club with sea-level dining, a duplex owner’s suite and an articulating crow’s nest rising from a private observation deck. A pair of infinity-edge hexagonal pools match the shapes of various seating areas and the atrium.

There’s nothing rough about this diamond in Feadship’s concept collection. Her hull shape and fully electric propulsion system with inline contra rotating propellers – an evolution from the Breathe concept and Feadship Savannah – are predicted in computer simulations to be 30 per cent more efficient than a typical 75-metre yacht with dual shafts, propellers and rudders. The advances made to her underwater profile mean less wake.

As with all Feadship concept yachts, C is completely researched and buildable. Following on the hydrogen fuel cell power generation developed for Feadship’s 118.80-metre Project 821 , concept design C will draw 100 per cent of her power needs from fuel cells directly running on methanol, complimented by lithium-metal batteries. Feadship sees green methanol as the best near-term step in the decarbonization of yachting due to its relatively high density and ease of use. Normal cruising speed on the fuel cells is 14 knots and a top speed of 17 knots can be achieved by adding the battery power to the DC electrical grid. Additional power will be generated passively by two pair of wave-actuated fins that fold out from the hull aft of the anchors. Estimates are that in a one-metre sea energy generated by their movement will meet one-third of C ’s hotel load.

Polishing the remote bridge plan introduced on the 2021 concept design Pure , C showcases the next evolution of Feadship’s adaptive technology with a command centre positioned on the lower deck between the crew area and beach club. This fully digital operation and navigation hub includes the latest in intelligent situational awareness technology with cameras and data fusion. The enabling technology has already found its way into the Feadship fleet onboard Ulysses . Its location is seen as a way to centralise crew tasks and improve communication lines between engineering and navigation crew. This layout and the smaller single-level engine room supported by the fuel cells maximizes prime owner and guest space, creating more value to an owner within the same gross tonnage.

Designers Ruud Bakker and Tanno Weeda will be available during the Monaco Yacht Show to explain the technologies and explore the design via the model and video animation with visitors next to the Feadship hospitality centre. For those unable to attend the show, more details on C will be released soon.
