Larendael introduces Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

the most innovative location for the construction, refit and maintenance of superyachts

On the 42 ha shipyard acquired by Larendael at the end of August in the Western Docklands of Amsterdam, we are going to develop a campus where several superyachts up to 200 meters can be designed and built. Refits and maintenance of super yachts can also be carried out here, both from private owners and from other shipyards. Uniquely, the Campus will offer the opportunity to design and produce the entire yacht on site, as well as provide space for training.

Innovation is central to the concept of the Campus. We invest in facilities and technical resources to encourage collaboration where possible, with open innovation as the goal. Examples include the search for alternative fuels, but we also see opportunities to make the construction process and the materials used in the ships more sustainable.

Demand for superyachts increases

There are currently some 5,500 superyachts in the world and nearly 200 are added each year. There is particularly high demand from America, the Far East, Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our country has been known worldwide for centuries for its many boat builders. With our quality, reliability, innovation and design, the Netherlands also belongs to the world's top in building superyachts. Superyachts are also becoming increasingly larger. In the past five years, 67 superyachts with a length of more than 50 meters were built in the Netherlands alone. To be able to build and maintain these large super yachts, shipyards are needed that are easily accessible and have the right facilities.

Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 meters and three large docks with a length of up to 155 meters. In addition, these dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht elevator will be available for yachts up to 80 meters, allowing maintenance to take place ashore. Outside, there will be space for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 meters long, with a water depth of up to 13 meters.

Wim Beelen (Creative Founder, Larendael):  "With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping at a place with a rich history, namely where the leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), operated in the 18th and 19th centuries."

Stimulating environment

With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are creating an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability are central. By offering an increase in scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions - both via the water and via the land, we offer superyacht yards and suppliers every opportunity to further expand the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry not only in size but also in quality.

Larendael reveals Dutch superyacht tech campus

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021

Written by: Marine Industry News

Following its acquisition of the historic 53 hectare shipyard located in the western port area of Amsterdam in August 2021, Larendael has revealed plans to develop a groundbreaking superyacht tech campus that will be able to accommodate large numbers of superyachts up to 200 metres in length.

The campus will be designed to handle design, production, maintenance, and refits. Unique to the superyacht campus will be its ability to provide the space required for the manifold stages of superyacht production from design to completion, the quantity of superyachts that can be accommodated, and arenas for training and education.

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be constructed, four large docks with lengths up to 200 metres and three large docks with lengths up to 155 metres. In addition, these dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A lift is available for yachts up to 80 metres, while th expansive harbour has water depths up to 13 metres, and an area for mooring 40 superyachts with lengths up to 200 metres each.

In its statement, Larendeal says: ‘Our campus will provide a leading edge, open environment where students, professionals, and visitors alike can view and participate in the creation of these exquisite yachts. Additionally, we are committed to seeking opportunities to benefit from alternative fuels for a more sustainable process of manufacturing and shipbuilding materials, preserving our campus as a leader now and into the future for superyacht production.’

Wim Beelen, creative founder of Larendael says: “With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history; the location where the former leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), was active in the 18th and 19th century.”

At $85 million CT tech high school, lathes, robots, cybersecurity war room and astronaut training center

Before the 2025 school year begins late next summer, Goodwin University plans to build its 90,000-square-foot NextTech Academy to serve freshmen high school students interested in industry and technology.

NextTech will join Goodwin’s system of magnet schools and further enlarge its campus along the Connecticut River, and will ultimately serve just under 290 students from ninth through 12th grade.

The $85 million building will include 6,000 square feet of industrial shops with equipment, technical classrooms and computer labs along with a cybersecurity war room.

A unique feature will be an astronaut training center: The school plans a partnership with the Victorian Space Science Education Centre in Australia, and Goodwin students will get to apply what they’ve learned about technical science in a virtual mission to Mars, according to Superintendent Salvatore Menzo.

Most of the school will be devoted to relatively traditional careers, with a heavy emphasis on high-tech manufacturing that’s in high demand by aerospace businesses along the I-91 corridor as well as other industrial employers around the state.

“The intent is to provide a leading-edge technical magnet program. It will partner with local industry to really get its students not only the soft skills they need for the world of work, but to really train them on the actual machines that some of our state’s leading innovators are using,” architect Michael Scott told town officials this summer.

Floor plans provided to the town’s planning and zoning commission show space for computer labs, CNC lathes, sheet metal work, 3D printing, welding and a work area for drones, automation and robotics.

The school will have a large gym, and outdoor field, an auditorium and band room along with other facilities.

Menzo said the curriculum will focus on design thinking, work-based learning, personal finance and six key workplace skills: critical thinking, time management, communication, presentation skills, team work and problem solving. There will be shop space for automation, production/fabrication, Smart Factory 4.0 and system integration.

A few topics in the Smart Factory 4.0 section will be data analytics, KPI-metrics, virtual processes, predictive maintenance, AI and cybersecurity.

Goodwin administrators envision classes of 18 to 20, with about 75 students in each grade. The program will meet the state’s graduation requirements, and Goodwin Connecticut State Graduation Requirements while offering them a unique intends to coordinate paid internships and apprenticeships.

The school will be constructed along Pent Road and when completed will form a complex of high school programs including Goodwin’s nearby Pathways High school as well as the educational facilities in Building 1 and Building 2.

Goodwin anticipates that the vast majority of students will arrive by bus or be dropped off by parents. The magnet school will serve surrounding towns, and Goodwin’s experience with Pathways is that most students get rides or take the bus rather than drive themselves. So even though the new school will be built on the site of Pathways’ parking lot, Goodwin told the town it is confident there will be enough parking with the 101 new spaces it has proposed.

SpaceX disputes $633K FAA fine, citing 'systematic challenges' with agency

SpaceX sent a letter to top congressional leaders on Wednesday denying allegations that it violated its launch licenses on two separate occasions last year, which has resulted in regulators seeking $633,009 in penalties from the company. Instead, the company asserts that the inability of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation (AST) to process “relatively minor” license updates is further proof that the agency is unable to keep pace with the space industry’s — but chiefly SpaceX’s — rapid growth. The FAA announced that it was proposing the fines against SpaceX after the company allegedly failed to follow requirements set out in its launch license on two separate occasions in 2023.
