Sailing Charters to the Greek Islands
Greece is home to over 1400 islands running from isolated islets to some of the most famous islands in the world (Santorini or Mykonos anyone?). No matter what your tastes run to: secluded beaches, nightlife and culture, archaeological and historical sites… or a combination of everything together, you will find a suitable island in Greece. We guarantee, if you like sailing, you are going to love sailing in Greece!
One of the great advantages of sailing in Greece is the small distances between many of the islands. If you have a week (or even a weekend!) you may easily visit islands in the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades from Athens. If you have longer than a week then take your time and relax, exploring your chosen islands in greater detail, or visit more islands to tick them off your holiday checklist!
For more information we invite you to browse our suggested sailing routes with details on popular island itineraries and sailing distances. For the more practically minded bareboat sailors, the fantastic Greek Cruisers Wiki offers many details on sailing in Greece and the marinas and facilities available on various islands.
Crewed Yacht Charters
Sail Greece is pleased to offer fully crewed charters upon request. With our crewed charters your boat comes with a crew to sail your boat and a hostess to prepare your meals on board. The safety and management of the boat is the responsibility of your captain while day to day shopping and preparation of the meals is the duty of your hostess. You simply sit back and enjoy your stress free and relaxing sailing vacation in Greece! Contact us for more details.

Suggested Sailing Itineraries from Athens
From our base in Athens, sailors typically follow one of two main sailing itineraries that are, broadly speaking, focused either in the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades archipelago. Of course you are free to choose whatever itinerary you wish and we are always happy to offer suggestions and recommendations.
The Saronic Gulf
The Saronic Gulf islands of Aegina , Poros , Hydra , Spetses and the Peloponnesian coast offer smooth sailing largely sheltered from strong winds. The Saronic sailing route, centered around the gulf, is highly recommended for easy sailing, especially in July & August, when the strong northern " meltemi " winds are usually strong further south in the Cyclade. It is also preferable for a charter of less than two weeks due to the relatively short sailing times between popular destinations.
Along this route you will find breathtaking vistas of cosmopolitan island towns , ancient temples, Byzantine castles, small fishing ports and unspoiled anchorages . The wind force of the annual N-NW Meltemi is usually not stronger than force 4-5, and can be significantly lower around the Island of Poros and the Methana Peninsula. There is also a possibility for some light S-SE winds, especially close to the Peloponnesian coast.
The Cyclades
The Cyclades is a group of Islands lying amidst the amazing Aegean Sea . They are world famous for the beauty of their rough, rocky landscapes merging with the crystal-clear sea, the traditional white-washed houses and windmills, and the endless possibilities they offer for exploring and sightseeing. Needless to say, some of the islands are well-known, to put it mildly, for their nightlife (Mykonos we are looking at you).
Cruising in this archipelago definitely requires skilled, experienced sailors as the winds, especially in July and August, can easily reach Force 6-7 N-NW, with the norm being Force 4-5 N-NW (the so called Meltemi annual winds). If you decide to sail the Cyclades you should certainly consider the more famous islands including Paros , Santorini , Mykonos , Serifos and Milos . Although, in all honesty, every island in the Cyclades is a true gem waiting to be discovered and many of our guests sail the area repeatedly to visit islands they have not yet had the time to explore.

Athens - Temple of Olympian Zeus
Athens is regarded as the historical capital of Europe. Over the years Athens was occupied by numerous conquerors contributing to the many beautiful monuments gracing this fascinating city. Since 1834 the city is known as the modern Greek state and in the past two centuries it has evolved into an attractive modern metropolis with matchless charisma.
The historic centre of Athens has been transformed into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone, covering the most important archeological sites, reconstructing, to a large degree, the ancient landscape of the town. Sites not to miss visiting the city during your Athens yacht vacation include the Hadrian’s Arch, which represents a symbolic entrance to the city or the temple of Olympian Zeus. Strolling along the Dionysou Areopaghitou Street you will come across the ancient Theatre of Dionysos featuring most of the works by Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus and Aristophanes. Continuing your walk, you will come across the ruins of the Asklepieion and the Stoa of Eumenes, as well as the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. From here you should most definitely climb up to the sacred rock of the Acropolis, where some of the world’s most important masterpieces of architecture and art can be found. The most famous is the Parthenon temple, followed by Propylaea, the temple of the Athene Nike and the Erechtheion. There is also the Acropolis Museum situated only 300m away, representing one of the most important contemporary works of architecture in Athens. Its exhibition contains 4,000 priceless finds from the Acropolis monuments.

Plaka neighbourhood, located on the eastern side of the Acropolis, is the historic centre of the town full of picturesque cafés, bars, tavernas and restaurants as well as small souvenir shops selling traditional Greek products. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the narrow winding streets lined with houses and mansions from the time of the Turkish occupation or the Neoclassical period and get transported back in time! This part of town is also home to the Lysikrates Monument, Hadrian’s library or the Roman Agora with the renowned Tower of the Winds. There are numerous museums including Folk Art, Popular Musical Instruments, Frysira Art Gallery and many others.
For sport lovers the Panathenaikon (Kallimarmaro) Stadium, home to the first Olympic Games in the modern history (1896), is a must-visit.
For those looking to do some shopping on their Athens yacht holiday in Greece, the commercial neighbourhood is the place to be. Starting with the Ermou Street, this area features more than 2,500 shops. On the western side of this area is the Athinas Street, reminiscent of Middle Eastern food markets. For luxury goods and fine boutiques, head to the Kolonaki, where you will find numerous world-renowned brands and shops selling high couture. There are also plenty of modern, high-end restaurants, bars and cafés often visited by the crème de la crème. Stroll the lovely streets of this neighbourhood enjoying the beautiful art déco, art nouveau and antebellum architecture.
In addition to admiring the unique view of this ancient city from aboard your chosen Athens charter yacht, there are plenty of great places in the city itself to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views. If you are after a relaxing walk, take a stroll along the seaside or for nightlife entertainment choose one of the many nightclubs located around the harbour.
There is plenty to see and do around Athens while cruising the Mediterranean aboard one of the Greece luxury charter yachts. Our brokers, together with the crew, will make sure you have an unforgettable time in Greece, full of great memories and experiences. Dear Josh, I was just about to write you one word "WOW!!!"Thank you very very much! Your recommendation is now becoming a brand :-) I can now blindly trust your advice :-) I loved the boat. It is in excellent condition. It is rather big, but cozy. We had all the chances for interactive sailing and for the discreet leisure time. We hardly ever went anywhere out of the upper deck, because it was so lovely! The master bedroom was perfect. The idea with two bathrooms is great! I loved the crew. Everyone was welcoming, ready to help and in general they were very pleasant people! Especially the captain and his senior assistant Tasos. We felt as if we were hosted by the family of old friends. Despite the short trip, they shown us lovely places to swim, advised on the island hiking, entertained us with the tender/toys. Food. Majestic! It was the first try for the new chef on Gitana. And he exceeded any expectation! Quality, quantity, the table service ...were impeccable. Your wines arrangement worked very well too! Sailing. We had just two chances to open full sails. But it was great! Otherwise the motor was perfectly sufficient. The boat was remarkably stable while on the go. So, our last minute booking turned out to be a fantastic adventure! Thank you very much! I am glad that you were there to help with this difficult booking. Really appreciated! S/Y GITANA / Athens, Greece / Oct 2

History from 3,000 and more years has never really ignored Athens, from its regional domination as a city-state many Millennia ago to Rome and then subjugation by the Ottoman Empire until recent times.
Athens is a city of immense depth and breadth that could really only be understood with years of scholarship and exploration. Ancient ruins such as the Acropolis sit side by side architecture that has been built through the ages. Greek cuisine of flavours influenced by different ages and times and a laid back attitude that can bewitch the visitor as soon as they arrive until long after they leave.
As a seafaring nation, Greece has long had an influence on the maritime world. Shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis is a 20th Century example of the country's trading power that stems from as far back as Minoan times long before history was properly written. An Athens yacht charter can follow routes taken by millions over thousands of years and today you can enjoy the now or the past of whatever age of civilisation you seek.
Explore Athens By Renting A Yacht
The Greece yacht charter industry is one of the oldest and best-established on the Mediterranean. The facilities are very good and infrastructure - and even many Greek island economies - built around it. You can get out to the DodecaneseIslands, Ionian Sea and the Argolic Gulf, all of which have great yacht charter infrastructure.
Whether on a bareboat, skippered or crewed yacht charter, an Athens yacht charter can start at Alimos Marina, just 20 minutes from the city centre. If you can, do spend a day exploring the main city before you head off - hit the Acropolisand nearby Marathon if you can as well as exploring the rest of the city.
A luxury yacht charter out of Athens can involve one of a number of ultimate destinations. Close-by to the southeast of the city, and best accessed from Laviron, the Cyclades Islands (pronounced 'kickladeez'), to include Paros, Naxos, Andros, Kinthos and Kea have ancient ruins from the days before Rome. They are extremely popular among yachtcharterers and you will find all manner of things from party towns to museums as you go.
The Saronic Gulf is to the northwest of Athens. Out of Alimos Marina, an island or coast-hopping sailing holidaywhere you can sail offshore to the Saronic Islands of Poros, Aegina, and Agistri as you explore this region.
How To Get To Athens
Athens Airport
More than 80 airlines fly into Athens Airport from all over the world.
Getting to Alimos Marina or Laviron Marina from there will involve either a bus, private hire minibus or taxi. It is cheaper but far slower by bus to the marinas, but for a party of 4 it could pay to go by taxi to the marinas as at €45 per trip this amounts to just €11.25 per head. Though quicker by taxi to both marinas it can take 45 minutes - or far more in heavy traffic.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Athens
The Cyclades Islands and Saronic Gulf are the primary destinations for those on an Athens yacht charter. Alimos Marina is a major charter yacht hub and is better than Olympic Marina Laviron for this, while Laviron is better suited to the Cyclades Islands.
7 days - Alimos Marina - Saronic Gulf - Spetses: With the very popular holiday island of Aegina as a first port, you then head SW across the gulf to Epidauros with its ancient ruins. Hydra is your next port of call with no cars allowed there and donkeys still the heavy transport mode of choice. Spetses itself played a major role in the recent Greek War of Independence, and still has the ruins of a Russian naval base. Island and coast-hop your way back.
7 days - Olympic Marina - Southern Cyclades: Kea is just a short hop from Laviron and can be done the evening you board the boat. There are a number of safe marinas and anchorages there so don't worry about being late! Mykonos is one of the best known Greek islands - do visit Little Venice where the sea goes right up to the buildings' walls. The nightlife is off the scale too! Loutra in Kynthos has hot medicinal springs and great coves for sea swimming.
14 days - Laviron to Santorini: The volcanic island of Santorini is one of the most famous sights in Greece short of the Acropolis. Heading out through the southern Cyclades islands including Paros, Mykonos and Aegean jewel of Ios, you will arrive in Santorini before turning west towards Folegandros, Serifos and Kynthos before returning to port.
Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Athens
The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. This is ironic as July and August can be the worst times to sail! Both extremely hot air temperatures and often hazardous Meltemi winds can make for big winds sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.
The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Athens yacht charter.
Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.
Sailing Weather In Athens
April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, thoough these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.
Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.
September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.
Frequently asked questions
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
Alimos Marina is the larger of the two marinas with a number of yacht charter companies working out of it. Use this for the Saronic Gulf, though you can explore the Cyclades too. Olympic Marina in nearby Laviron is half the size but better equipped, and is good for a Cyclades sailing holiday.
May to June are the best times of year to go on a sailing vacation out of Athens thanks to the comfortable heat and gentler sailing conditions. Most islands have water supplies too. July and August are fiercely hot and the Meltemi winds can be fierce, but even so are the most popular months for a boat rental in Greece.
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

For beautiful sunset views, head to the Temple of Poseidon, a striking series of towering columns that stand 60 meters above sea level against the backdrop of the glittering Saronic Gulf. Another must-visit is Athens’ Plaka neighborhood, stretching out under the shadow of the Acropolis it plays host to a wealth of ancient sites, museums, historic churches and picturesque piazzas with bustling cafes and restaurants.

lou topdemir 23 Nov, 2022 Overall great experience. They have provided everything they promised. Almost brand-new boat, excellent skipper, and beautiful islands. No surprise cost of anything. I strongly recommend their service. Hydra is an Island to see. Special paragraph for our skipper Petros! He treated my family and my friends as his own. He is my new Greek brother.

Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Athens, Greece
We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Athens!
Sailing from Athens
Everyone knows Athens is monumentally historical, and lays claim to being the birthplace of modern Mathematics, Eonomics, Philsophy and even civilisation, so it should come as no surprise to learn that it is also one of the oldest sailing destinations in the world, with ships setting sail from the Capital centuries ago! It is a classic cruising ground, and has some fantastic marinas to set sail from, all well connected to the ancient centre.
Athens is the best place to charter from if you want to explore the Saronic islands - and there's so much to explore: from the pistachio-growing island of Aegina, the ancient ruins at Poros, and the almost mythical Hydra, which is an amphitheatre of a marina that is genuinely a wonder to behold, and where they still transport everything by donkey! We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !
SAILING RATING: Beginner - With easy line-of-sight navigation, clear waters and light winds it's a great start point for sailors (and an easy cruising ground for experienced ones). Peak season is July & August, but you can sail here from March to October.
MUST-SEE: Our full suggested itinerary is further down the page, but we'd highly recommend taking in beautiful (and homely) town of Aegina , the hill-side fishing village of Hydra , and of course the ancient parts of Athens .
WHAT WE CAN OFFER: We have a great range of yachts and catamarans available for charter from our trusted Charter Partners, all available bareboat or Skippered. We can also arrange a Hostess, Personal Chef and other crew.
GETTING THERE: Both Marinas are c. 40 minutes from Athens International airport. We can organise transfers for you - a 4 person taxi is c. €40 - 50.
WHY BOOK WITH US? We only work with the very best professional charter operators , who we have met, know, and trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com.
WHAT NEXT? Use the pink box to search for yachts or catamarans with LIVE pricing & availability - if you have any other questions or requests, get in touch via Live Chat, the Contact Form , or by phone.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Athens
From Athens you're very well placed to explore the Saronic islands - Aegina is famous for its pistachio nuts, Poros for its vibrant tavernas and the Posedion ruins, and Hydra for the incredible stepped-town which is a joy to behold after a few hours at sea.
This itinerary also includes getting the boat back to the home marina for 6pm on Friday night, as required by the charter operator (so they can inspect the yacht), and then complete the check-out formalities immediately before you leave the boat (after an exhilarating week) on Saturday morning.
Avoiding the ferries and the massive cargo ships, the island of Aegina will be on the nose of the bow for most of the way, and then you tuck around the north-side of the island to find the pretty fishing village of Aegina, which has bars, restaurants and shops located around the marina to tempt you back on to dry land. Aegina is most famous for its pistachio nuts, so be sure to pick up a handful.
The main part of the town is on the northern side of the channel, which offers neoclassical architecture, a town square, and a beautiful blue church tower, as well as plenty of traditional Greek taverna's, almost all of which will serve up excellent seafood. There's also the ruins of the ancient temple of Poseidon, but beware they are just ruins now.
From Poros, you'll bear out of the channel and in a South-easterly direction along the Peloponnese peninsular, before heading South-west to Hydra. The entry into Hydra is spectacular (and one of the high points of the Mediterranean), with the buildings on the steep sides of the bay turning the marina into something of a medieval auditorium. The marina is only small, so get there early if you want to be guaranteed a spot.
Formed from intense volcanic activity in around 260 BC, Methana's 25 volcanoes now lie pretty much dormant, save for a few sulphur springs and thermal baths (both inside and outdoors). The baths are said to have mystical healing ability, but, at the very least, they're warm. For those that like to scale volcanoes, there are a number of large craters to be found, but it's an arduous trek from the town. Plus the nearby beautiful beach of Limnionas is well worth a visit, and the view of the surrounding islands is almost just as good from sea-level.
Agistri, or, more specifically, the town of Megalochori (or ‘Milos') at it's Northern tip, is an idyllic Greek fishing village with enchanting narrow streets. Life clearly moves at a different pace, and it's almost impossible not to relax here. As with most of the Saronic gulf, the seafood is exceptional, and you'll consider money well spent if you visit a local taverna.
If you haven't yet been to explore Athens ancient centre, then it really is well worth a visit, and the Acropolis is still a wonder to behold even after 2,000 years. A tram stop just outside the marina makes it easy to connect to the city centre, and then you can join all the other tourists in checking out the home of modern civilisation.
For those with less energy, the best beach bars in Athens are just along the coast, or the marina itself has three bars which should have not only a fun atmosphere, but also plenty of fellow sailors who you can share tales of your adventures with. And then it's time to check-out to head for home – and to start planning your next voyage with PlainSailing.com for next year (or maybe you can squeeze a quick jaunt in later on in the season...?)
Sailing Conditions
The prevailing wind in Athens is a North-Easterly, which means you'll likely be going down the wind to nearby Aegina and Poros, or reaching if you stick to the coastline south of Athens. The wind is fairly dependable during the sailing season, with wind speeds of over 11 knots most days offering ideal sailing conditions. It is typically a katabatic wind which rolls off the mainland once the ground is heated by the sun, meaning that the wind starts off slowly in the mornings, picks up in the afternoons, andis virtually non-existent when the sun sets.
In you're sailing in the Cyclades (as opposed to the Saronic Gulf, it's useful to know that during spells of July and August, there are also Melthimi winds, which descend from Hungary and can reach speeds of over 25 knots, and which are probably best enjoyed from land unless you’re an experienced sailor.
Our Charter Partners operate out of three different marinas in Athens, and both are easily accessible by public transport.
Most charters at the moment are from Alimos Marina , but we also sail from Agios Kosmas Marina , 8km further to the south of Athens, which hosted the 2004 Olympic sailing events.
If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places that are close to the marinas: Hotel Nefeli or Hotel Poseidon near Alimos, or the Bomo Palace Hotel near to Agios Kosmas Marina.
Alimos Marina, Athens
Alimos Marina is the largest marina in Athens, with over 1080 berths for yachts, and superb facilities - including three in-marina bars/restaurants which can provide a great starting point to your holiday, or a welcome space for rest and relaxation away from your boat. Just down the coast, there's a public beach to while away the hours, and, heading in the same direction you'll also find some of Athens best beach-clubs and most exclusive nightclubs which spill out onto the beach and where cocktails and loud music flow well into the night.
Agios Kosmas Marina, Athens
Agios Kosmas Marina was the host port for the sailing events in the 2004 Athens Olympics. It has since been converted to make space for 337 berths - including berths for boats as as big as 80m long - and it was awarded a Blue Flag for excellence in 2017.
The nearest town is the upmarket Glyfada, where you'll find one of Greece's only golf coursers. The centre, a pleasant 1km sea-side stroll away has plenty of decent restaurants, and is where Athenians come to relax and recover after a hard day in the city.
