My Clipper Race

My Race Beginning

My race began in the spring of 2019, when I was originally going to do the 2021-2022 version of the Clipper Race...well before we had any inkling that we would be beset by a global pandemic!

My Race Execution

The 2023-2024 Clipper Race is composed of 8 legs around the world, composed of 11 identical boats, 11 skippers/first mates,  and over 700 crew, from around the world!  For the next 11 months we will circle the globe, cross 6 oceans and travel over 40,000 kilometers!

My Race Philanthropy

Philanthropy is an important tenet of the Clipper Race.  From our sustainability pledge to the  community service events the crews do in port, we focus on building a better world.  I am dedicated to raising $40,000 ($1 for each kilometer around the world) for Unicef and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research .

Clipper Race: From Seattle to Panama

Published on May 6th, 2024 by Editor -->

The 2023-24 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is on the move again for the 4200nm leg down the western coast of North America from Seattle, WA to Panama. The 11 teams departed Bell Harbor Marina on May 4 where they had been berthed since their arrival, transiting the Puget Sound to the offshore location where they started on May 5.

The Seattle stopover saw one of the biggest crew changeovers of the edition, as the circumnavigation progresses into its final quarter. With yachts seeing a turnover of nearly all their leggers, there was a buzz of fresh-faced crew, excited and ready to join the rest of their teammates rejuvenated after an incredible stopover in Washington state.

Following the North Pacific crossing, the conditions the crew will face on the next race will vary greatly as they go from the cold to heat near the Equator.

“The joke is you start the race, hoist up your Code 3, the heaviest spinnaker that you use for the windiest of wind, you sail until you can’t fly it anymore,” said Washington, DC Skipper Hannah Brewis. “Then you hoist your Code 2, then you hoist your Code 1, which is the lightest spinnaker, once you can’t fly that, then you hoist your Windseeker which you use for the really really light winds, then you fly that till you can’t and the race ends.”

clipper yacht tracker

Due to the light conditions expected as the route approaches Panama, and the importance of making the Panama Canal crossing time, there are six mandatory gates that the fleet have to pass through, with each potentially being called as the finish line should it be needed.

“It can be frustrating to have six potential finish lines, but you don’t really think of that till the end,” added Brewis. “I actually think it’s really fun, its small goals to aim for. It can be tricky when it comes down to it, but there is no point in thinking about that till we get there”

The coastal course will see the teams at sea for about three and half weeks.

About the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race: The Clipper Race was established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-69. His aim was to allow anyone, regardless of previous sailing experience, the chance to embrace the thrill of ocean racing; it is the only event of its kind for amateur sailors.

Held biennially, the Clipper 2023-24 Round the World Yacht Race got underway September 3 for the fleet of eleven identical Tony Castro designed Clipper 70s. This 13th edition has 24 crew aboard each yacht, coming from 63 different nationalities (105 sailors from the USA) for the 40,000 mile circumnavigation of the world.

The course is divided into 8 legs and 14 individual races, with some of the crew in for the entire circumnavigation while others will do individual legs. The team having the best cumulative score over the entire course will win the Clipper Race Trophy.

Royal Clipper Review

Review of royal clipper.

The 2000-built Royal Clipper cruise ship is a masted barquentine/tall-sailing ship constructed by Stocznia Gdynia SA (shipyard in Gdansk Poland ). The fleetmates Star Flyer and Star Clipper are both authentic 4-masted barquentines.

The vessel (IMO number 8712178) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 248786000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

The 227-passenger Royal Clipper is a tall sailing ship owned by Star Clippers Ltd (Sweden) . The 5-masted, steel-hulled, fully-rigged vessel was designed by Zygmunt Choreń and built using the existing steel hull modified by Gdansk Shipyard. The Royal sailing ship was designed for the polish miners as a sailing holiday cruiser. Her first name is Gwarek (meaning The Miner in ancient polish).

Royal Clipper cruise ship

In July 2000 Merwede shipyard completed ship's interior. The renovations included Rainer Maria Latzke's frescography murals, completing the Mediterranean interior of the vessel. Royal ship's design is based on Preussen - the famous 5-masted German Flying P-Liner windjammer built in 1902.

Royal Clipper cruise ship

Royal Clipper ship claims she is the biggest "true sailing ship", of course, built since Preussen. She is also in Guinness World Records as largest in service square-rigged ship featuring 5202 m2 of sail.

Decks and Cabins

Royal Clipper has 4 passenger decks and a total of 114 staterooms, of which 16 Suites, 14 Balconies, 6 Inside, 106 Outside. The cabin categories are 8.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Royal Clipper offers sea-going ultimate experience, with balanced grandeur, tradition and adventure of sailing with superb service and amenities of a modern yacht. Carrying just 227 passengers, the boat provides the luxurious style and full 19,000 ft2 of open deck. The three swimming pools give a wonderfully spacious outdoor environment.

Royal Clipper Lounges and Bars include Captain Nemo Gym Lounge & Spa ( spa and health club featuring underwater glass portholes), Observation Lounge, Tropical Bar, Piano Bar (live music), Atrium (three-deck), Purser's Office, Gallery (2). Other facilities include a library (with faux fireplace, board games), Water Sports Marina, Wireless Internet Access.

Itineraries

During the summer, Royal Clipper sails in the Mediterranean, departing from Civitavecchia-Rome and Venice . During winter months, she offers Caribbean voyages through the southern part of the Lesser Antilles area. She can visit the smallest ports which larger ships cannot reach, because of her size. Between seasons, Transatlantic crossings are offered.

The Royal Clipper cruise ship is a 5-masted steel-hulled and fully-rigged tall ship (sailing ship). It joined the fleet of Star Clippers in 2000. The vessel was modeled after the famous German windjammer Preussen (built 1902). This sail cruise ship was originally designed as a holiday cruiser for the coal miners from Gdansk Poland , under the name Gwarek (meaning "The Miner" in Old Polish).

Royal Clipper is listed as "the largest square-rigged ship in service" in the Guinness World Records book, with 5202 m2 (56000 ft2) of sails.

On select Yoga-themed  fitness cruises , Star Clippers offers free daily meditation and yoga classes. The company also invites celebrity chefs to give themed cooking demonstrations. Royal Clipper's most thrilling onboard experience (performance) is climbing the rigging. The mast climbing is always supervised and takes place several times during a voyage (weather permitting).

The Fleet

The Fleet The Clipper 70

The third generation of one-design Clipper Race yachts debuted in the Clipper 2013-14 Race, proving to be faster and more dynamic than previous Clipper Race yachts, breaking speed records of 35 knots [OneDLL, Leg 6].

The eleven 70-foot yachts make up world’s largest matched fleet of ocean racing yachts. Designed by renowned naval architect Tony Castro, they are the shining jewel in the Clipper Race crown, perfectly adapted to this gruelling sailing challenge.

As with all lean, mean ocean racing yachts, the Clipper 70s are not for the faint-hearted. They are by design stripped of all luxuries. Race Crew must become experts at living in a confined space, managing all their kit and belongings as they settle into their new home.

The Clipper 70s feature twin helms, twin rudders, and a six-foot bowsprit, which allows the inclusion of three large asymmetric spinnakers and a suite of Yankee headsails, which combine to increase performance and boat speed. The new hull design produces better performance and control, especially in the light winds encountered near the Equator or between weather systems when crossing oceans. The design provides total control in the heaviest of conditions, ensuring not only high speeds, but safety too.

Today’s fleet is in stark comparison to the one which began the very first Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 1996. Development ideas have been taken from both previous yacht designs: the Clipper 60s and Clipper 68s.

Hull & Exterior

The hull construction utilises lessons learnt from previous races, employing well-proven composite construction materials and methods. The hull and deck are of a sandwich construction using glass fibre, epoxy resins and structural foam. More commonly called Foam Reinforced Plastic (FRP), this construction method is light, stiff and proven to produce an incredibly strong and safe hull. Modern features have been included within the design of the hull which, along with the twin rudders, give improved directional stability when heeling, provide the helm with more control and achieve a faster ride.

The deck layout provides a well-designed environment for the crew to perform in. Eleven Harken winches, including the primaries controlled by twin three-speed coffee grinders, will swiftly bring the sails under control. Jammers and organisers have been located in easy-to-operate locations allowing crew to swiftly change settings. The mainsheet has been placed further aft in the cockpit, permitting a better level of communication between the crew as they undertake the various evolutions during tacks, gybes, hoists and drops. The aluminum mast towers 95-feet above the waterline and is rigged using tried and trusted materials and methods to further improve overall safety.

The boats are designed with a state-of-the-art HD fixed camera system to ensure that all the action on deck will be captured and used by media around the world to showcase the conditions faced by the crew during the race.

Interior Design

Below deck is a stripped-out interior with 24 bunks, a state-of-the-art navigation station and a simple galley. Watertight bulkheads and doors are strategically located to provide compartmentalisation in case of flooding.

The navigation station is placed towards the stern, providing a closer link between the navigator and helmsman. It is equipped with all the latest navigation electronics, navigation computers and cutting-edge satellite communications. This area of the yacht will provide the skipper and media crew member on board an ideal working space. GRIB weather files will be studied and courses mapped on the navigation computer while photos, diaries and videos will be edited and sent back to race headquarters using a powerful marine computer.

The engine and generator are mounted behind the companionway steps. Their mid-ship position brings increased stability and balance to the hull and also keeps all the ancillaries and electrical components in one maintenance-friendly area.

Centrally, just aft of the mast, sits a simple horseshoe-shaped galley, which feeds in to the communal area. This is where crew briefings and all-important meal times can take place. Crew accommodation runs from the stern forwards in a series of double bunks and stops short of a watertight bulkhead towards the front third of the boat. Ahead of this is a large compartment for storing sails, with the main hatch located directly above.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers takes delivery of third hybrid ferry in series

UK's Uber Boat by Thames Clippers takes delivery of third hybrid ferry in series

Baird Maritime

UK transport company Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has begun operating a new fast ferry built by Wight Shipyard to a design by One2Three Naval Architects of Australia. Mars Clipper is the third vessel in a series of hybrid high-speed passenger ferries built for commuter services on the River Thames in central London.

As with Earth Clipper and Celestial Clipper , Mars Clipper has all-aluminium construction, an LOA of 38 metres, a beam of 8.3 metres, and capacity for 182 passengers plus three crewmembers. There are 182 interior and 53 exterior seats from where passengers can enjoy excellent views of the London waterfront scenery.

A hybrid diesel-electric setup will allow the ferry to operate solely on battery power while transporting commuters and sightseers and recharge while using biofuelled power outside of central London. Instead of relying on shore-based charging, the boat will use excess power from the biofuelled engines to recharge the batteries.

The ferry can reach a top speed of 28 knots when running only on the two diesel engines. When battery power is instead utilised, the vessel can still easily make 12 knots.

Even when the main engines are engaged, NOx emissions are still reduced thanks to an installed selective catalytic reduction system.

Jack Russell, 63, Dies; Singer for Great White and Survivor of Nightclub Fire

At a show in 2003 with his band, a pyrotechnics display ignited a fire that killed 100 people, including the band’s guitarist.

A man holds a microphone while onstage, wearing a bandanna. His arms are tattooed.

By Alexandra E. Petri

Jack Russell, the singer who led the popular 1980s hard rock band Great White as well as a spinoff group, which set off one of the deadliest nightclub fires of all time, died on Aug. 7 at a family member’s home in Southern California. He was 63.

The cause was Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy, said K.L. Doty, who collaborated with Mr. Russell on his autobiography.

Mr. Russell’s death was announced in a post on his official Instagram profile on Thursday and confirmed by Ms. Doty. Great White also paid tribute to his death on its Instagram page.

Mr. Russell founded Great White with the guitarist Mark Kendall. The band, originally called Dante Fox, began playing in small clubs in Southern California in the early 1980s. It changed its name to Great White in 1984 and had its first big hit in 1987, when “Rock Me” reached the No. 60 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Great White found success with its third album, which featured its biggest hit, “Once Bitten Twice Shy.” The song climbed to No. 5 in 1989 and earned the band a Grammy nomination.

Mr. Russell briefly left Great White in 1996 to pursue a solo career. He returned in 1999, but by 2001, Great White had disbanded.

In 2002, Mr. Russell and Mr. Kendall hired three new musicians and began playing in small clubs as Jack Russell’s Great White. In February 2003, while the band was performing at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, R.I., its pyrotechnics ignited a deadly fire that killed 100 people, including Great White’s guitarist, Ty Longley, and left 230 injured. It was one of the worst nightclub fires in U.S. history.

The two brothers who owned the club , and who installed the highly flammable soundproofing foam around its stage, were charged in connection with the fire, as was the band’s tour manager, who lit the blaze.

Mr. Russell was not charged, but members of the band agreed to pay a $1 million settlement .

By 2005, Jack Russell’s Great White had disbanded after “the stress from lawsuits, inner band turmoil and Russell’s substance abuse problems had taken its toll,” according to All Music Guide .

In 2013, nearly a decade after the fire, he told The Boston Globe , “It’s been almost 10 years, and no matter what I say it’s never going to make anybody feel any better about it, and sometimes it might make them feel worse, so I really would rather not say too much, you know.”

Great White reunited in 2007, although the reunion was short-lived. Mr. Russell continued making music with Jack Russell’s Great White but announced in an Instagram post in July that he was retiring because of his health problems.

“I am unable to perform at the level I desire and at the level you deserve,” Mr. Russell wrote. “Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love, and support.”

Jack Patrick Russell was born on Dec. 5, 1960, in Montebello, Calif. He grew up in Whittier, Calif., and dropped out of high school to pursue music.

He is survived by his wife, Heather Ann Russell, and his son, Matthew Hucko.

An earlier version of this obituary misstated the name of the Billboard singles chart. It is the Hot 100, not the Top 100.
