SERENA Yacht for Sale

Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.

First launched in 1964, Serena was the height of maritime cool in that heady decade. Almost half a century later, this Carlo Riva-designed Feadship was completely rebuilt and restored to better-than-new condition.

The 43,000-hour project incorporated technologies and materials normally associated with a much larger Feadship. System-wise, a major focus was placed on vibration attenuation, noise reduction, fuel consumption and heat insulation. The engine room was turned into a standalone area and the stabilization brought to 21st-century standards.

Serena was rebuilt in a way that is unprecedented for a motoryacht of her type and she has been described as “the ultimate mini-megayacht”

Serena’s outer decks, fully planked in teak, consist of three separate lounge areas with ample sun and/or shade for everyone:

The upper deck features large sun pads, protected on three sides by the surrounding wind screen. This area can be exposed to sun, or easily shaded.

The foredeck has fixed bench seating forward of the cabin house, and a large teak foredeck which is ideal for steamer chairs.

The large aft deck has a fixed settee and table forward, and ample moveable custom teak seating at the aft end. This area can also be shaded with three canvas sails if desired. There is a mid boarding gate for the custom passerelle. The port side boarding is reserved for the dock ladder, and the starboard side is ideal for tender access via the boarding stairs.

The main deck also features an indoor/outdoor pilothouse. On the port side is a comfortable settee, with a versatile and moveable table or work area. Forward is a beautiful and functional helm area, which features modern electronics housed inside stylish cabinetry.

Moving below and aft from the pilothouse will lead you to the wood paneled guest accommodations:

At the aft end of this deck is the full beam master stateroom, which features a queen size berth to starboard, and a very comfortable sofa/settee to port. This cabin also features a large screen television, full size closet, and ensuite head featuring marble surfaces and a rain shower.

Moving forward there are two cabins, port and starboard, which each feature twin bunks. The starboard side features an ensuite head, while the port cabin has a detached head, which also serves as the day head.

Moving forward from the pilothouse is another set of stairs which descend to the large wooden planked dining salon and is surrounded on three sides by windows which can be opened, thus offering an indoor/outdoor feeling. To port is a wrap-around seating area and a large dining table. Forward is a small desk/work station, and to starboard is ample cabinetry and storage, including a large television on a lift. The overhead is a lovely white paneled cambered ceiling.

Descending another staircase will lead to the surprisingly functional chef’s galley. To port is a four burner cooktop, oven, and microwave forward of the working space and stainless sink. To starboard is a crew dining area, and pantry. The aft wall features dual refrigerator/freezers made of stainless steel.

Moving forward, again, leads to the crew accommodation space. To port are two bunk beds, and to starboard is a private Captain’s cabin. These areas share one head and shower in the forepeak.

Aft of the galley, the staircase can be lifted to reveal a watertight door to engine room. Just before the door is a very clever set of custom tool boxes, which can be shifted on removeable rails to reveal spare parts storage outboard to both port and starboard. Beyond the watertight door lies an engine room that boasts miniaturized versions of large-yacht equipment, installed in a very tidy and useable fashion.

WORK HISTORY

  • Exterior / interior paint (2018-2022) Vessel had full paint job with Awlgrip 2000. Vessel has been kept under cover during last 2-yard periods and ceramic polish applied to all painted surfaces.
  • Bilges paint (2020-2022) All bilge areas have been treated and new coatings applied throughout.
  • New Lithium house batteries

The house batteries were 2 cell gel batteries. To minimize weight in the stern of the vessel and gain storage area in the lazarette these batteries were switched out for new lithium-ion batteries.

  • Bow thruster and Lithium batteries  A new electric bow thruster was installed to assist in docking maneuvers and powered with its own set on lithium-ion batteries and charger. A cooling fan was added to keep the bow thruster electric motor cool and maximize the run time of the motor without overheating.
  • LED lights upgrade  All interior lighting and exterior deck lighting has been converted to LED type to minimize power consumption and heat.
  • New underwater lights  Originally the vessel had a single underwater light at the side boarding ladder. 3 additional lights were added on the transom and port side for symmetry. All the light were weld in fittings with LED fixtures.
  • Pasarelle  With the change in the davits, the passerelle was upgraded to operate with a cross bar which allows for the passerelle to be raised and lowered using the davits. The entire passerelle had new hardware fabricated and installed to preserve the structural integrity of the platform. Swivel hinged wheels were installed for greater stability when in use.
  • AV / IT  Starlink has been added to the communication center of the yacht
  • Pumps replaced (2021-2022) All pumps (sea water, fresh water, black and grey water) have been serviced / overhauled or replaced if required during this yard period. New CuNi discharge tree fabricated.
  • Pilothouse air handler  During use of the vessel last summer, it was noted the pilot house could not be cooled down, an additional air handler was installed in the salon and ducting routed to the pilot house. This unit was sized according to the capacity of the chiller plant. The salon air handlers were also replaced.
  • Windlass serviced and new electric motor  Windlass has been overhauled with new bearings and electric motor.
  • New generators  The old generators were 1 @ 16kw and 1 @ 10 kw. The owner wanted to have the ability to run on a single generator most of the time only bringing the second online as needed. We installed 2 new 16kw with the ability to load share and shed as needed for the addition on galley equipment and the redundancy of the generators.
  • New shore power unit  The small shore power unit installed in 2018 was not sufficient for the shore power loads the vessel was seeing, and it was an air-cooled unit creating excessive heat in the lazarette area. The new unit can take 100-amp shore side power and provide the vessel with all the power required. This unit is also liquid cooled. The input has been split between 2 50-amp cords to allow the vessel mooring in smaller marinas where a 100-amp service may not be available.
  • Main Switchboard
  • Ships alarm and monitoring system
  • Galley transformer 110VAC A new cook top and microwave were added to the galley. These are 110v 60htz appliances. A transformer was added to the vessel for these 2 units and allowed for a few 110v convenience outlets through the galley area.
  • New rudders  During rudder removals for inspection, it was noted the steel rudder shafts were heavily pitted and the steel rudder blades had seen better days. New stainless-steel rudders were designed and fabricated. The shafts were made of Aquamet 22 and the blades were fabricated from 316 stainless.
  • ER and Lazz ventilation  The original ventilation system in the engine room was not adequate for the addition of more machinery and did not have a demister system to keep salt air / water from entering the machinery space. Additional holes were cut through the hull side to allow for more air flow while being hidden behind the existing decorative clam shells on the hull side. New more powerful fans were installed along with a demister system. These fans are automated working from engine room temperature and pressure.
  • New stainless-steel davits The original davits were painted steel with a rake of approximately 160 degrees. The owner felt this interrupted the flow of the vessel lines and asked to have the davits at 90 degrees. New davits were designed, load tested and installed using 316 polished stainless steel. A securing system was also developed to keep the tender rigid when in the stowed position.
  • New stainless-steel cutwater
  • Oil change system
  • MSD sewage treatment plant
  • Stabilizer upgrade
  • Water heater / boiler
  • Spot zero / Watermaker
  • Valves revised, bilge manifold rebuild (2020-2021)
  • Steering hydraulic pump serviced, ram serviced, Emergency steering and lock for rudder (2022-2021)
  • Entire steering system including pump has been overhauled and parts replaced as required. A new purchase system has been installed to center and lock rudders in the event of steering failure.
  • New anchors and anchor chains
  • Fixed firefighting x3 (2018-2021)
  • Awnings x3 (2018-2022)
  • Anchor locker steel repairs
  • Appliances (2018-2022)
  • Nav Comm (2018-2022)
  • New chiller plant  A new chiller plant was installed with new chiller lines and all air handlers serviced.
  • Fashion Plates
  • Pilothouse console
  • Pilothouse table
  • Master bed mods  The port master bed has been converted into a sofa lounge area as per the owner's request.

Feadship Heritage Fleet Launch 2013 105 1440

About Serena

In the early sixties, De Vries and De Voogt started a co-operation with Carlo Riva, owner of the ultramodern Cantieri Riva wharf in Sarnico, Italy. The results of this relationship were three different De Voogt/Riva design series: Atlantic at 26.70m, Viking at 35.20m and Caravelle at 22.50m. All made a favorable impression on the market, but the greatest success in terms of sales was achieved by the Caravelle-series: a modern fast steel motor yacht, equipped with two GM V-8 diesel engines. Seven were built in total.

The result of a ‘dream team’ collaboration between Feadship and Italian maestro Carlo Riva, this vintage yacht captured the heart of the owner. Despite having never previously owned a yacht, the new owner recognised the importance of Serena ’s preservation and after acquiring her, he decided to sent her back to the original shipyard for refit and refurbishing. The result is fabulous.

Serena Description

Cruising area of serena, accommodations, specification, water sports, scuba diving, entertainment, green initiatives, serena crew profile.

Capt. Hugh O´Brien - Born in England and then lived in more than a dozen countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Now a permanent US Resident living in the Caribbean & Florida, predominantly in the US and British Virgin Islands. Hugh started competitive sailing and ocean racing in the UK & France in 1987 (36 years of ocean sailing experience). He com¬pleted his intensive Royal Yachting Association (RYA) YachtMaster 500 Ton Sail & Power Commercial License in 2002 at the presti¬gious UK Sailing Academy and worked as a Captain & Chef in commercial yachting in the Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands, USA & Japan. Hugh also ran 5 Star Sailing with a 50 ft Beneteau Sloop as a Captain Chef in the Virgin Islands from 2007-2011. A 20-year career in Marketing & Sales for American IT & Database companies saw Hugh working in some 20 countries and heading up operations in Europe, US, Asia & Latin America. From 2018-2022, Captain Hugh owned and operated Ocean Star 60, a 60 ft Beneteau sloop. Having worked with Chef Vivi on Ocean Star 60, they have since become partners in Serena Yacht Charters, LLC, and operate the 63-ft sloop Yacht Serena, their new Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62. Yacht Serena is the Hull #1 of Beneteau’s ultimate Oceanis Yacht cruiser series and has many extras, including a carbon fibre Code 0 racing sail. Hugh attended culinary classes and schools in France, Japan and America, and specializes in Mediterranean, Latin American and Asian fresh food dishes with premium ingredients. Hugh is a light social drinker but nonsmoker, no drugs, no criminal record, clean licenses and a broad sense of humor especially when trying to catch fish! Vivianne Swietelsky Chef/First Mate Ocean Star Vivianne, or “Chef Vivi” is based in Water Island, USVI and Coconut Grove, Miami. She is known for her authentic interpretations of the world’s great cuisines - American, Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, and Latin American, and her signature fusion MediterrAsian cuisine. She is also makes amazing desserts and is an inspired cocktail mixologist. For as far back as she can remember, Chef Vivi has been passionate about food and the artistry of its preparation. Born in the U.S. to an Italian father and a Venezuelan mother, she has travelled all over the world and lived in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Mexico, and the Caribbean and is fluent in five languages. Her family life revolved around the enjoyment of great food and her mother taught her to cook instinctually, from the heart. Chef Vivi built upon this foundation and has expanded her culinary knowledge and skills over the years. Chef Vivi attended different culinary schools around the world and studied Hospitality Management at the Florida International Universi¬ty’s School of Hospitality & Tourism. She has been a restaurant Pastry Chef, owned her own upscale Miami catering company, “Truffles Catering”, and worked as Private Chef for HNWI in both private homes and on charter yachts. Another one of Chef Vivi’s passions is sailing, and she has enjoyed working on sailboats around the world. She also has an ASA Certificate for Offshore Sailing gained in the U.S. Virgin Islands and has owned and operated several Beneteau yachts. After working as Yacht Chef with Captain Hugh on Ocean Star 60, Vivianne and Hugh became partners in 2023 and now operate Serena Yacht Charters, LLC on their beautiful 63-ft Beneteau sloop, Yacht Serena. Yacht Serena is a very special yacht: she is the Hull #1 of Beneteau’s ultimate luxury Oceanis Yacht 62 cruiser series. Vivianne has enjoyed refitting Yacht Serena with many upscale amenities, including FRETTE sheets and towels, Lanvin products, and Bose sound systems in every cabin. What Vivianne enjoys the most about being a Private Yacht Chef is the daily interaction with her guests and the pleasure of creating wonderful memories for them. She really loves the feeling of serving wonderful food, drinks, and delivering excellent service on gorgeous Yacht Serena. Her and Captain Hugh’s motto about their guests is, “it’s all about you, all the time”. Nothing matters more to them than delivering a five-star experience and exceeding even the highest expectations.

Serena guest reviews, mid-june, 2024, guests aboard serena wrote:.

This charter has been truly phenomenal. We sailed this gorgeous ship. We snorkeled glorious reefs. We saw squid, shark, puffers - things we´ve never experienced before. The Virgin Islands are amazing, but what truly makes Serena remarkable are its owners. Between Vivi´s amazing meals and Hugh’s enchanting stories this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We feel like we´ve added family, we have enjoyed our time with Hugh and Vivi so much. The Pittman/ Baldwin/ Tolliver group are so grateful for the memories we´ve made this week. We will miss this beautiful area when we head back to Detroit, but we will miss these remarkable people even more. Heather Pittman P.S. Our nighttime sing-a-longs were epic! Best parties ever! Captain Hugh and Vivi are Masters of Improvisation and Adaptation. The previous page covers what a fantastic week this has been. Adding to that is that we have 5/6 guests with various allergies, and the food was high end restaurant quality even when 3-4 different platings/ingredients were juggled. Vivi and Hugh adapted to our schedule of being late sleepers, and we still maximized our two main focci, Snorkeling and Sailing. We saws how much effort this took, and we appreciate it! Thank you. Neil Pittman

Thank you Hugh!! Words cannot express how much we loved our time aboard Yacht Serena with you & Vivi…. truly the trip of a lifetime!!

Early April, 2024, guests aboard SERENA wrote:

As we were filling out our preference lists, we figured you’d be dreading your week with us - fish lovers who can’t eat anything spicy, a teenager who eats no fish and vegetables, and a Vegan (gasp!) who likes very spicy things… Poor Vivi! Luckily, we all like sailing, so at least you handsome fun on the boat on the extra windy days this week! Serious hats off to Vici for crafting such amazing (individualized) meals to keep everyone happy (especially the F*#%ing Vegan) And Hugh, thanks for getting Taffy out for snorkelling trips without a hitch and listening to all Jeff’stories. You’ve learned far too much about this family - try not to use it against us Thanks for everything….. I can’t remember the last time I felt this relaxed & well cared for. I hope we will be back for another Serena cruise! Come visit us ❤️ Cheers, Melissa Jeff loved sailing your beautiful boat & helping Milo learn the ropes. This, our first crewed charter was so relaxing, fun + delicious food unbelievable. Thank you both! Taffy & Jeff Thanks for the adventure - Milo

Serena

DESIGNED IN ITALY

Built in the netherlands.

Launched in 1964,  Serena was the fourth boat in the Caravelle series of steel motor yachts designed by Carlo Riva of Sarnico, Italy, and built by the De Vries Bros. yard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. The collaboration between these two family boatyards was initiated by Riva, who was already well-known for sexy runabouts and wanted to offer a product to the yachting market. For the De Vries, Riva’s approach was irresistible on two counts: it gave the Dutch builder a foothold in the Italian market and Riva was willing to assume all the risk on the first boats.

Under Riva's close supervision, the Caravelle models evolved over the 1961-1965 period. Hull No. 4 was the first of Series II, which at 73’10” was slightly longer than earlier models. After a 1964 showing at the Amsterdam Boat Show bearing the name  Caravelle , the boat was purchased by German yachtsman Freiederich W. Stukenbroker to cruise on the French Riviera. He named her  Serena .

THE LEGEND OF RIVA

Cantiere Riva began in the early 19th Century as a service business, when young Pietro Riva was recruited from Lake Como to Lake Iseo in northern Italy to repair damaged fishing boats. His son Ernesto followed in his footsteps in the latter half of the century, building tourist boats making use of the new internal combustion engine. Ernesto died in a boatyard accident in 1907 and was succeed by his son Serafino, who built increasingly competitive race boats along with high-quality inboard "cruisers" through the late '20s and '30s.

Serafino's son, Carlo, showed talent as a teenager, and despite his father's skepticism, was committed to building wooden boats in series. As a young designer, Riva developed the tapered, convex sterns that the company became known for, and in the early '50s, when his father retired, Carlo shifted out production of race boats to focus on mass production of inboards and outboards for the commercial market.

As the business grew, he developed a partnership with Giorgio Barilani, a graphic designer, and by the 1960s, the name Riva was more than just the name of the world's most popular high-quality runabout—it was synonymous with a sexy new brand of Italian design. Thanks to Carlo's emphasis on quality and style, Riva boats became fashionable among royalty and movie stars, from Prince Rainier to Brigitte Bardot.

Classic Riva runabout style

CARLO RIVA

FROM RUNABOUT TO YACHT

When Carlo Riva looked for a capable partner to open the company's Yacht Division, he knew the learning curve would be steep—and expensive—and the complexity and cost of building bigger boats might jeopardize his company's reputation and financial well-being. Riva's options for an Italian partner were limited, so he looked to northern Europe instead. There he was introduced by a client and friend, the brewer Freddy Heineken, to De Vries Bros., one of the leading builders of steel motor yachts. The result was a collaboration between Carlo and the De Vries family. The Caravelle series was produced with the Riva-De Vries trademark. Interiors and superstructures were by Riva and Giorgio Barilani. Heineken bought the second boat in the series.

According to Carlo:

“I was in London, at the boat show, with my friend Freddy Heineken [and] ...expressed to him my desire to build larger yachts, in steel. Freddy immediately invited me come visit him in his home country, Holland, where there were yards who obviously specialize in metal construction of yachts and ships…”

“I met with De Vries at the shipyard. We were both immediately excited about the project and [he] then came to visit my shipyard in Sarnico…

“The agreement was...concluded that the yachts would be built in Holland, but controlled myself. My company would then sell them. I assumed all the financial risks of the venture and would only offer my prospective clients a boat of impeccable quality...

“I have very fond memories of my association with the De Vries family. I designed those yachts completely from my own imagination and drew them with my own hand.”

Riva interview excerpt; 2011  Invictus

A NATURAL PARTNERSHIP

The De Vries shipyard was one of three yards that became allied in 1949 as the First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders, more commonly known as Feadship. Naval architecture and engineering was provided by De Voogt Naval Architects, also a partner within Feadship. Using its expertise in steel yacht construction, the De Vries yard was a natural partner for Riva, and the Caravelle was the first of several yacht models the partnership conceived and built. By no means did the design stand still over that time, as Carlo Riva, ever the perfectionist, tweaked and modified the Caravelle models, lengthening them and shifting from GM diesel engines to Rolls Royce by the time  Serena was built.

SERENA'S 2011 REFIT

HOMAGE TO CARLO RIVA

More than 35 years after launch, a new owner named Rembert Berg returned  Serena back to the Netherlands for a major refit at Feadship at the Royal De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum. The company removed most of the interior to shore up the original structure, replaced her Rolls Royce diesels, and designed a contemporary style for the interior matching the original layouts and Sixties look-and-feel. Given the name “Homage to Carlo Riva,” the styling combined teak panelling with palisander furniture and leather detailing. All soft furnishings feature natural tone on tone colors blending in with the warm browns of the timber. To manage the extensive refit within a budget, Feadship created an apprentice program within the company, bringing in students as carpenters, metal workers, painters and furniture makers and teaching them their craft. Originally estimated at 22,000 man-hours of work, the final tally was 43,000.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

A MATCH FOR  DORADE

After searching for seven years for an appropriate mothership for their classic racing yacht,  Dorade , owners Matt Brooks and his wife Pam Rorke Levy discovered  Serena , which Rembert Berg had put up for sale. "We were not interested in a 'big white motor yacht,'" says Brooks, "and at first we looked for a boat from the same era as  Dorade —or even earlier—going as far back as the 1890s. We considered wooden-hulled boats, both motor boats and sailboats, that had the same classic lines and patina as  Dorade .  Serena was a much newer boat, but in the end she was a good match because both boats are iconic boats by iconic makers."

It was also important that the boat raft up neatly to  Dorade with a relatively low freeboard and a lower overall profile that wouldn't interfere with  Dorade 's rigging. According to Levy, "We went to Palma to see the boat and meet Rem, who insisted we meet in person. He clearly had a deep affection for the boat and wanted to make sure she was in good hands."

In May of 2018 over dinner,  Serena  was purchased, and within weeks she was packed up and shipped off to the Lauderdale Marine Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.. There, she was fully serviced before her delivery to Newport, R.I., where she was commissioned for the season on July 5 in front of New York Yacht Club's Harbour Court. A few weeks later, she made her debut as  Dorade' s tender in Maine on the NYYC's Annual Cruise .

Discover the art of Having a Wonderful Time at Sea

A very special yacht.

Yacht Serena is the first ultra luxury yacht built by Beneteau to launch its Oceanis Yacht series, the result of a collaboration between Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design and Italian designer Pierrangelo Andreani.

As Beneteau’s Hull #1 (first yacht built!) of the series, this luxuriously appointed yacht has many premium features, the perfect setting for your vacation. With sleek lines and a contemporary mix of noble hardwoods and white lacquer woodwork, Yacht Serena is casually elegant and inviting.

Her wide interiors are bathed in light by huge hull portholes and the layout is designed for privacy. The transom opens wide to create an extra-large rear platform designed like a terrace over the sea, allowing easy access for swimming, water sports, and launching the dinghy from the dinghy garage.

Relax in any of our 10 ample lounging areas, either in the shade or out on the foredeck on double sun beds with built in lights and speakers.

Why Serena Williams wore a catsuit to the French Open

The tennis star is hoping to inspire new moms.

Serena Williams on Tuesday was back on the tennis court for her first major tournament since giving birth to her daughter last year, but it was her outfit that made the biggest impression on fans.

To mark her big return, the tennis star, who beat Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the first round of the 2018 French Open , wore a black bodysuit fit for a superhero.

In an Instagram post, she explained that her "catsuit" was meant to inspire other women in her position.

"For all the moms out there who had a tough recovery from pregnancy—here you go," she wrote. "If I can do it, so can you. Love you all!!"

(MORE: Serena Williams not seeded in French Open after taking break for maternity leave)

(more: serena williams opens up about harrowing medical ordeal she faced after giving birth to her daughter).

Williams, 36, gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., in September 2017, and has not played in a major tournament since. It was revealed last week that the 23-time Grand Slam winner had dropped from No. 1 to No. 453 in the Women's Tennis Association rankings during her maternity leave. Still, her coach said in an interview on May 14 that Williams had been "improving in all areas fast" and "will be ready" to play.

"Serena will play the French Open to win it," he said. "Can she do it? Serena can achieve anything -- after being her coach for six years, I'm even more sure of that statement."
