The Cuisine

Creating an array of beautifully presented mouth-watering delicacies for guests to enjoy, Thai chef Suthon Cheamkaew brings over 20 years of experience to Northern Sun, having started out in restaurants and hotels in Thailand and Malaysia before moving on board 14 years ago. Prior to joining Northern Sun he worked on board MY Sapphire, MY Maverick and MY Braveheart.

His extensive knowledge of cooking styles and techniques means he is equally comfortable producing high level, fine dining cuisine as he is with more casual home-style food. Alongside other skills in Chinese, Japanese, Italian and some French cuisine, he's also an advocate of healthy eating and Kosher dishes. Providing guests with delicious gastronomic delights, whilst ensuring the highest attention to every detail is his primary motivation, he thrives on achieving great feedback for every meal.

The167-foot (51m) NORTHERN SUN is a long-range displacement expedition vessel, previously known as the Japanese ice-class marine research vessel HOKKO MARU, launched in 1976 by the Japanese shipyard Narasaki Shipbuilding.

From 2005 to 2008, the vessel underwent a complete conversion, transforming her into a luxury superyacht.

Built with steel hull and aluminum superstructure, she features an ultra-modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion effect and ensure the ultimate comfort throughout your charter vacation. It will cost you, though.

When Captain Jason Chambers set sail for Peacock’s Below Deck Down Under Season 2 , he was in somewhat unchartered territory. Filmed at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef in the stunning waters of Cairns, Australia, the latest season welcomed guests aboard the M/Y Northern Sun , a Japanese superyacht that was unlike any vessel he’d ever captained in the past. “ Northern Sun is a 1977 Japanese fishing vessel that’s been converted to a luxury superyacht,” Captain Jason explains in the Season 2 premiere. “It’s the perfect vessel because, this season, we’re in Cairns, right at the foothills of the most spectacular underwater scenery you’ll ever see. It’s adventure yachting, and it’s perfect for exploration.”

You don’t have to sign up for a reality TV show to visit the 50.8-meter-long Northern Sun, though. The yacht, which began as an ice-class research vessel that analyzed marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea, is currently listed with a weekly charter starting cost of $161,700 and an asking price of $15 million. Able to accommodate 12 guests in 6 staterooms, Northern Sun includes such luxury amenities as al fresco dining, an outdoor jacuzzi, and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, as well as a range of water-sport toys, allowing guests the opportunity to go scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, water skiing, and more, while exploring Thailand and surrounding areas.

In a July interview with Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Chief Stew Aesha Scott explained why Northern Sun made Season 2 “completely different ” in allowing guests to have one-of-a-kind experiences. “The boat was smaller, it was more manageable,” she said, comparing the vessel to M/Y Thalassa BDDU ’s inaugural season. “The boat this year was a converted fishing vessel, and for me it was just so much better because Thalassa was outrageous how big it was. That was part of the stress was that it was just so big ... We’re still offering the guests a really nice five-star experience.”

Northern Sun’s laid-back feel also played a key role in Season 2. “I think altogether that it’s just kind of created a more tropical, casual kind of vibe, which I actually think was a real positive thing because the guests were just so relaxed,” Aesha added. “And [they] just got up to such mischief — which was funny most of the time. Sometimes it was annoying, but most of the time it was funny.”

Captain Jason, for his part, shared in a separate interview with the outlet that the latest installment of the original Bravo franchise flew by, either way. “I walked onto the boat, said ‘What the hell is going on?’” he joked. “And then the season ended.”

Television network Bravo will begin airing season two of Below Deck Down Under on 17 July, a Below Deck spin-off which follows a yacht crew over an eight-week charter season in Australia. This instalment sees Captain Jason Chambers return at the helm, cruising guests around the warm, tropical waters and colourful cays of the near-uninhabited Whitsunday Islands. Delivered in 1976 under the name Hokko Maru (“Northern Light”), Northern Sun has lived a full and fascinating life. At 50.8 metres, she was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. The transformation from ship to superyacht came in 2006 when she underwent a two-year refit, courtesy of her new owners.

Northern Sun has the hardy constitution of an explorer, marking a departure from the first season’s white boat Keri Lee III . 

When her current owners undertook renovations, they were intent to elevate her to superyacht standards while still maintaining her distinctive look. Her old windlasses are still visible on the forward deck, the master cabin has retained its original camber and even the engine room looks exactly as it did when she was a research ship. "Looks" being the operative word, of course – she’s had several system upgrades since the 70s.

Interiors include natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). This dark wood furniture and wall panelling give Northern Sun her warm, traditional feel, while the cabins themselves are dotted with the owners’ collection of travel paraphernalia. It makes for an eclectic living space, with indoor sofa seating accented by authentic Persian rugs and the formal dining room and master suite fixed with guild-frame, 19th century oil paintings. Keep an eye out for one of the owners’ most coveted pieces, a 100-year-old ship’s clock which still rings out the two-hour, maritime work shift also known as "the dog watch".

Northern Sun’s main deck is dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation.

The superyacht naturally has impressive stowing capacity, with space for scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide. There are also two Laser sailboats, enabling nimbler exploration along Australia’s shallow bays and coral reefs.

The owners spent ten years cruising through Southeast Asia after Northern Sun was refitted. Using the superyacht as a base for adventures, they've scuba-dived in the Andaman Sea, kayaked in the mangrove swamps of Phang Nga Bay and explored some of Indonesia’s most remote fishing islands. In 2015, they decided to put Northern Sun on the charter market, where she quickly became one of the most popular yachts available in Thailand. Now, she’s made her way across the seas to become the breakout star of Below Deck Down Under .

Captain Jason will be joined by returning chief stew Aesha Scott, working alongside a brand-new crew.

NSR Shipping Traffic – Research activities in 2021

In 2021, a large number of research works were carried out. 19 companies involved 21 vessels for research work. In total, there were 134 passages from a port to a work area and back, and this number also included passages from one work area to another. For comparison, in 2020, 116 such transitions were made, 27 vessels from 13 companies operated.

The first entrance to the NSR waters was at the end of June (the vessel Akademik Keldysh, ice class Arc 4), but the peak of work fell on the middle of the summer navigation period – from August to October (see chart on the map). The vessel Mikhail Somov was the last among the research vessels to leave the Arctic seas (the NSR was left on November 28). Such a late return to the home port of Arkhangelsk was due to severe ice conditions that found the ship in the northeastern part of the Kara Sea. Mikhail Somov was not far from Russkiy Island, off the coast of the Taimyr peninsula, away from ship routes, when it first helped by the LNG carrier Boris Davydov. The tanker freed the ship from the ice and continued its voyage to the port of Sabetta, but soon Mikhail Somov got stuck in the ice again. This time another LNG tanker – Rudolf Samoylovich – helped the ship. The icebreaker “Dikson” escorted the research vessel “Akademik Primakov” through the Vilkitskiy Strait to open water in the Laptev Sea. The research vessel Akademik Treshnikov with scientists from different countries on board, conducted comprehensive scientific research. The work of the international expedition Arktika-2021, was lasted until September 6. Research was carried out in the waters of the Barents and Kara Seas, as well as the Laptev Sea and near some islands. The work was on the initiative of the famous polar explorer Frederik Paulsen, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society. This was a joint project of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) and the Swiss Polar Foundation, aimed at studying the natural environment of the Arctic in a changing climate. The participants of the international expedition collected data on the distribution of the Atlantic water mass, one of the main sources of heat in the Arctic region. And in the coastal zone, they studied climate and sea level fluctuations to reconstruct the process of glaciation in the Arctic based on the study of coastlines, lakes and glaciers on the islands. A comprehensive environmental expedition to study the environmental situation in the western part of the Northern Sea Route was carried out on the research vessel “Aleksey Maryshev” provided by Hydrographic Enterprise (Rosatom). On August 26, 2021, the research vessel of the Hydrographic Enterprise of Rosatom “Petr Kotsov” began to carry out navigation and hydrographic work in the East Siberian Sea.
