The Georgia Queen and Savannah Riverboat Cruises

Savannah riverboat cruises’: the georgia queen..

It is a 1,000-passenger riverboat that traveled 2,800 miles down the Mississippi River, down and around the shorelines of Florida to call Savannah her home.

The Georgia Queen is a great way to see the city and is one of the most unique social gathering destinations in Savannah, but its impact on local tourism and economic development will be substantial with the added ability to attract large conferences and conventions.”

The Georgia Queen Savannah Riverboat

Built in 1995 as a luxury floating casino for 14 million dollars, the majestic 1800s paddlewheel-style riverboat spent several years traveling the Mississippi River. When gambling legislation changed, allowing land-based casinos to open, the riverboat underwent a four-million-dollar makeover. Today, this spectacular paddlewheel-style riverboat acts as Savannah Riverboat Cruises’ Savannah River Queen’s grand sister ship.

The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 feet long, 64 feet wide and towering at 68 feet tall.

She is among the top elite in the country with a capacity of 1,000 passengers, plus a 200-person crew, making her the size of a small cruise ship at 38,000 square feet. The ship’s entertainment spaces include three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space. It offers more than 5,000 square feet of open-air top deck space with patio seating. This affords more than enough room to accommodate a romantic riverboat wedding on the Savannah River.

The Georgia Queen also boasts a multi-deck, fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is also equipped with a large service elevator, making traveling between galleys discrete and easy. This onboard kitchen will change the entire dining experience for guests. This will allow for more plated dinner opportunities and flexibility in menu items.

The Georgia Queen

“Experiencing Savannah from our beautiful riverfront is such a unique experience,” Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli said.

“Savannah Riverboat’s guests are treated to refreshing breezes, fun entertainment, and some of the best southern cuisine Savannah offers. They can view Georgia’s oldest city as her founders did many years ago when they arrived by river in 1733. Jonathan and his team have been providing unforgettable narrated tours of Savannah’s harbor for 25 years. The Georgia Queen is a game-changer for their business. It will be another valuable asset to the thriving tourism and hospitality offerings of Savannah.”

Learn about our Editorial Policy .

Established in 1733 on the Savannah River, the city of Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and played an important role during the American Civil War. Today, Savannah is a popular tourist destination, including riverboat gambling cruises. While Georgia has strict laws on gambling, the boats head a few miles into international waters where it's legal to gamble. There were once a number of riverboats offering casino cruises out of Savannah, but most have closed their doors as they didn't prove to be lucrative ventures .

Emerald Princess Casino

The Emerald Princess cruise ship is the only casino cruise ship left in the Savannah area. The boat itself is 200 feet long and has four fun-filled decks. Once you're in open international waters, they will open the casino portion. There are two gambling decks in the casino with:

  • 12 blackjack tables
  • 2 Emerald Princess stud poker tables
  • 6 Texas hold'em tables
  • 2 roulette wheels
  • A craps table

Dining is available on the Bistro Deck and it's first come, first served. Leave your name with the host to be called when a table becomes available. There is a fully stocked bar with experienced bartenders waiting to serve you while onboard.

There is an age limit of 18 to be on board the ship and you must be at least 21 years or older to consume alcohol. Be sure you bring your ID; otherwise, you won't be allowed to board.

If you're interested in group activities, there is a cruise director on the ship that will help organize additional activities like EZ Money, Bingo, and Bonanza Bingo.

Tickets and Schedule

Most cruises are $10 per person and the Emerald Princess Casino sails Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7pm to midnight; Friday and Saturday 11am to 4pm and 7pm to 1am; and Sunday 1pm to 6pm.

Round-trip transportation is available to and from the Emerald Princess Casino through the Savannah Limousine service if needed. Inquire as to rates.

Directions and Location

The Emerald Princess is located at One Emerald Princess Drive, at the southern end of the Sidney Lanier Bridge. If you're coming from I-95:

  • Get off at exit 29
  • Turn onto US-17 North
  • Follow for 5.4 miles
  • Make a right onto Jekyll Causeway, or GA-520 East, and then an immediate left onto Emerald Princess Drive

The boat sits near Jekyll Island State Park where you can find a myriad of outdoor activities. There are a number of hotels located nearby as well, so if you do a night cruise, you can be right near your hotel.

Tips for Taking a Casino Cruise in Savannah

For the most enjoyable time aboard the ship, keep these pointers in mind.

  • Be sure to dress up some. They suggest attire you might wear to a club or nice restaurant.
  • It can be cold in the casino, so bring a light sweater or jacket.
  • Refrain from bathing suits, cut off tops, tank tops, bikini tops, flip flops, and high heels.
  • Prepare to tip for all services provided by the staff, including casino staff, bartenders, and wait staff.
  • Arrive early as you may forfeit your spot if you don't show up within an allotted amount of time before sailing.
  • Be patient as they can't open the casino until they get to international open waters. That may take a couple hours in some cases.

Visitor Reviews

Reviewers are really divided on whether the Emerald Princess is worth it. Some people enjoyed the river cruise and noted they saw dolphins during their day cruise. The night cruise is great for groups and people who just want to enjoy a night out doing something different.

Of the negative reviews, most complaints center around less than excellent food and a lot of smoke. Something to note that caught a number of reviewers off guard is that the kitchen closes about an hour after taking off so if you plan to eat, you'd better do it when you first get on board.

Is a Savannah Casino Cruise Worth It?

As there is only one company that really still operates a casino cruise out of Savannah, you might be wondering if it's worth taking one. If you're a hardcore gambler, you may be disappointed, since it may take a while to reach international waters, even though it's only a few miles out. The scenery is beautiful, though, and at only a $10 cover fee, it's still not a bad way to spend 4-5 hours.

We would like to express our utmost satisfaction with the staff at Savannah Riverboat Cruises that we sailed on from 1:00 - 2:30 pm, July 24, 2024. During our visit, my spouse and I had an exceptional experience, characterized by impeccable hospitality. The buffet offered a delightful selection, with the fried chicken and Peach Cobbler standing out as particularly delicious. Furthermore, we found the service provided by Ms. Shydaya to be exceptionally attentive, thorough, and considerate, making her the best waiter we have encountered in a considerable amount of time. In our humble opinion, we wholeheartedly believe that Ms. Shydaya deserves a 5-star rating for delivering unparalleled service. Thank you. Best Regards, Lester & Annette, Jacksonville, FL.

I booked the "Lunch Cruise" for a company meeting while we were in town, and almost every single one of my group made some kind or compliment about the experience. You are allowed to begin boarding at 12pm and as soon as you're seated, you can start loading up your plate from the buffet. (I had the "Chef's Special," which was a chicken and sausage jambalaya - YUM!) I mention this because at any point you can go outside and enjoy the views, (although you cannot hear the tour narrator while outside). We ate, (a few of us went back for seconds), went outside and enjoyed adult beverages (for purchase, separately) on the exterior deck. A good time had by all!

riverboat casino georgia

A very low-key and low-impact way to spend a few hours in Savannah, and a decent way to beat walking around in the heat by just taking a seat and letting the Savannah Queen do the work for you. My aunts and I opted to do the sight-seeing only version of the tour. With these tickets, we were seated on the 3rd and 4th decks and this was a great way to see the tour because we were not beholden to a dining table. The 4th deck is open seating and you are free to move about. We also had a view of our MC/Narrator as he paced across the ship while narrating what we were all seeing. There are slushie drinks available with/out alcohol. The metal seats can get HOT in the sun so maybe don't wear shorts, and/or bring a towel or sweatshirt to sit on. The most exciting part of the tour was seeing the cannon ball go off at the war reenactment fort. And, the trombone player who plays at the port while the boat docks at the end of the tour- tip that man- he is amazing! Tickets are $37 pp for the afternoon sightseeing and 55$ pp for a weekday lunch. Overall, I think this is an experience for an older crowd, and not necessarily something I'd take little kids on because of how chill it is.

**Catch of the Day: Terribly Disappointed** I recently experienced the Georgia Queen Dinner Cruise, and I must say, it was a major letdown, especially considering the $100 per person price tag. Firstly, the food was served buffet style, which I initially thought would be a highlight. However, the "catch of the day" was a major disappointment. It turned out to be the thinnest pieces of tilapia you could find. When I hear "catch of the day," I expect something more impressive, like grouper, swordfish, or salmon--not farm-raised tilapia. Moreover, the portions at the buffet were very small, leaving much to be desired. For the price, I expected a more substantial and satisfying meal. Unfortunately, the dining experience fell far short of my expectations. Overall, the Georgia Queen Dinner Cruise did not live up to its promise, and I left feeling terribly disappointed.

We got here after doing the trolley tour . To start I think the price of 40 bucks a person was a bit much for this "cruise" . The ship is very nice and the crew was great just that the tour was kinda short. It went up the river a bit and had some things to see but the inside which has AC didn't have enough tables by windows so from inside we couldn't see anything. Went to sit outside but wound up on the left side of the boat & wasn't anything to see but a dredger and construction sites along the way. Went to right side where all the narration involved sites of interest but too crowded & couldn't get a seat for my disabled wife. My wife had a hard time in the 3rd deck handicap bathroom as the lock was broken and she had to keep the door closed with her cane. So after spent almost $100 bucks on this, wasn't worth it. Anyone looking into doing this , look at the reviews .

Cruise overall was ok. I would recommend to a friend, but would warn them about a few things. The cost of the cruise/dinner was a little expensive due to the food being warm/room temp. I understand we could go back and get as much food as we want, but we didn't want to go back for cold food. We paid over $100 per person for the cruise. This only included the cruise and dinner. Alcoholic drinks were extra. I totally understand we were not just paying for a dinner. It costs a lot to run a boat, pay staff and have a band. But, having banquet food and the servers not having to serve you or have food runners to help, this should save a lot of time and energy that can be used in other areas. When we arrived at our table we felt rushed to get our food and we were 40 minutes from leaving the dock. We told them we wanted to wait a while to eat so we could experience our dinner while cruising down the river. We also heard other servers tell their tables to go ahead and start eating. We wanted to have a couple of drinks from the bar and then have our meal. Wouldn't the dinner cruise and their servers make more money, since alcoholic drinks aren't included in the price of dinner? Due to this, the experience of a "dinner cruise" was lacking. We would have loved to have more time to enjoy a drink (or 2) and watch the boat depart, then start our dinner. We could have done this, but kept being reminded that the buffet staff was ready for us each time a server passed us. We were also told we could visit the buffet as many times as we'd like until 8:00p, why the rush? We had almost 2 hours to eat. It really took away the magic of a dinner cruise experience. Overall the food was ok and the buffet staff was fantastic. Our server was good, but busy. Too many tables and having to help make drinks. I know being understaffed is very hard, so no points taken off for that. I felt bad for the servers. This is a great concept. We were excited to be able to have this expertise available to us on our trip to Savannah.

If you manage your expectations and don't take yourself too seriously I believe you will have a good time on the riverboat. For the sunset cruise, I'd recommend taking advantage of the top deck with the best views and purchasing the commemorative cup and photo package. Because there isn't a buffet offered on the sunset cruise, this is a nice activity to do pre-dinner. Unless you are feeding kids (chicken tenders and the like) I wouldn't recommend purchasing food on the boat. There's a DJ and after tourists get a few drinks in them, there is a fun atmosphere with room to dance.

Bonaventure Cemetery In Georgia Is Among The Most Haunted Places In The Nation

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA is renowned for its beauty and haunted legends, making it a unique and historic site.

When you think about the most haunted places in Georgia , what comes to mind? There are lots of spooky places here: places with urban legends, perhaps murders, ghosts, and, almost always, a sordid history. If you've got a few places in mind, chances are good that Savannah, GA was among them. This beautiful and historic city is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the southeast. And when it comes to haunted cemeteries in GA, one name stands above most: Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA. This gorgeous graveyard is an amazing place with so much history and natural beauty, but it's also the site of many legends and it's said to be one of the most haunted cemeteries in Georgia. Is Bonaventure Cemetery haunted? Let's take a peek at the Bonaventure Cemetery history and see, shall we?

While many of us are familiar with the fact that Savannah, Georgia is one of the most haunted cities in the United States, you might be shocked at just how many places here have spooky legends surrounding them.

alt

In particular, one Southern Gothic cemetery in Savannah has frequently taken top honors as one of the most haunted places in America and certainly a contributor to the haunted Georgia legends. The famed Bonaventure Cemetery is known the world over for its beauty, but also for its ghosts.

alt

Many people consider this cemetery one of the most beautiful final resting places in the world, and we definitely agree! There's nothing like seeing the Spanish moss draping from towering oak trees. The colorful flowers blossoming with vibrant color each spring is also a treat.

alt

The Bonaventure Cemetery history is quite rich. The graveyard was featured in the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It's also the final resting place to quite a few notable figures from history.

alt

It's also quite popular as the place where the ghost of little Gracie Watson resides. She was the daughter of a Savannah area hotel manager and well-known throughout the city. Tragically, she died of pneumonia at the age of six, and her family placed a sculpture in her honor at her grave site.

alt

Since her death in 1889, many residents have claimed to have seen Gracie, both throughout town and also in the cemetery. Today, tourists and locals alike visit the little girl's final resting place to pay their respects and leave behind gifts.

alt

However, Gracie isn't the only reason that Bonaventure Cemetery has been dubbed one of the most haunted cemeteries in GA. Over the years, visitors have reported hearing inexplicable sounds.

alt

If you visit, keep your eyes peeled and make sure to listen out. You never know if you'll hear crying babies, dogs barking madly, or even spooky bouts of laughter.

alt

Tours are offered regularly at the cemetery, and we highly recommend coming for yourself to see what makes this haunted cemetery in Georgia so unique. Feeling really brave? Night tours are occasionally offered.

alt

Even if you aren't a strong believer in the paranormal, a visit here is an amazing experience you'll never forget.

alt

The intricate craftsmanship on the memorials and statues here is incredible.

alt

We can't answer the question "is Bonaventure Cemetery haunted?" for sure - you'll have to decide that for yourself. However, we can say it's one of the prettiest cemeteries in the country and part of haunted Georgia history.

alt

The Incredible Church In Georgia That Has Been Left In Ruins

In a place with as much history as the Peach State, it's not much of a surprise that there are plenty of abandoned places in Georgia . Often, these no-longer-used destinations become eyesores to the surrounding community, and it's not uncommon to see shuttered buildings being overtaken by nature and graffiti. The spot we're featuring today may no longer be used for its intended purpose, but it's now a beautiful art piece that speaks to the history of the area. The Nesbitt-Union Chapel in Marietta, GA is a historic church that's no longer standing, but is still a landmark of the community.

The Nesbitt-Union Chapel was originally just a single room constructed in 1886, and it was unique in that it served as a chapel for several different denominations.

alt

This is a pretty busy area today, but in the late 1800s, this was located on Marietta's outskirts. The church was an important place of worship for those who lived just outside of the city and would have had to travel many miles to reach Marietta for service.

alt

Some of the early history surrounding the church has been lost to time. At some point, there was a fire that burned down a wooden structure on the property.

alt

It's likely that this was a prior building that served as a chapel before the construction of the stone building whose remains still stand here today.

alt

By the early 1900s, all that remained of the church was a single wall.

alt

Recently, a "ghost frame" has been erected to memorialize the history of the site and help you better imagine what stood here.

alt

It may look a bit bizarre from the side of the road, but I think this is such a neat art piece and a beautiful tribute to a piece of history!

alt

For more information about these church ruins in Marietta, GA, check out the Friends of Nesbitt Union Chapel Facebook page.

Are There Indian Casinos in Georgia?

All casinos, including Indian casinos, are not permitted in Georgia, so you won’t find any Georgia casinos at all. The only option for those wanting a casino experience within the state is to head to the cruise ship casino in Brunswick, which sails out of state lines to allow gambling. Alternatively, the neighboring states of Florida, Alabama and North Carolina have casinos that Georgia residents can visit.

A racino is essentially a horse racing track with a casino, and you won’t find any of them in Georgia. This is because both casinos and betting on horses is not permitted. It is possible to hop the border and bet on horses in both Alabama and Florida though.

Are There Cruise Ship or Riverboat Casinos in Georgia?

There is one cruise ship casino in Georgia, called the Emerald Princess. While gambling in Georgia is illegal in nearly all forms, the ship is able to get around this by taking passengers out to sea and out of the jurisdiction of Georgia. Once far enough out, it is legal for passengers to play a whole range of casino games.

Georgia Gambling Laws

Unfortunately for gambling fans, there haven’t been many laws passed in Georgia to legalize the pastime. In fact, aside from the lottery and charitable gaming, no forms of gambling have been legalized . Below you can see the individual pieces of legislation banning gambling and permitting lotteries.

This law makes all commercial gambling illegal in Georgia

Established a legal lottery in Georgia

The history of gambling in Georgia isn’t long, due to the state’s strict stance on the subject. You can see a timeline of the main events below…

Georgia history image

1878 Georgia bans the sale of lottery tickets.

1976 Charitable gaming in the forms of bingo and raffles are legalized.

1993 The first legal sales of lottery tickets take place in the state.

2012 Senate votes to establish a casino to pay for education. The bill is never signed into law.

Upcoming Changes in the Gambling Regulation

There have recently been moves to expand gambling in Georgia, however they have been unsuccessful. House Resolution 378 sought to ask voters whether the state should legalize all forms of gambling, however it was not successful. The fact that efforts are being made to legalize gambling at all in this traditionally anti-gambling state is encouraging.

Osage River Casino question to be on November ballot after court ruling

LAKE OF THE OZARKS (WGEM) - A group trying to build a casino in Missouri is feeling lucky now that a judge ruled in their favor Friday.

A Cole County judge ruled Friday that a petition to add a 14th casino in Missouri did get enough signatures. After a petition to add a 14th casino license in Missouri was found to be over 2,000 signatures short, a group wanting to build an Osage River casino at the Lake of the Ozarks filed a lawsuit.

The Secretary of State’s Office conceded in front of a Cole County judge that a mistake was made and the petition did get enough signatures.

“We don’t think they were up to anything nefarious. We think that just the clock ran out on them. And we’re, we’re gratified that the system works. We’re gratified that the court understood it, and we’re really excited to be able to take our message to the voters in November,” said Osage River Gambling spokesperson John Hancock.

Because the November ballot was already finalized earlier this month, it required a court order to make a change.

Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft was unavailable for an interview following the ruling. His office sent our Missouri Capitol Bureau a statement that said, “During the initiative petition review process local election authorities were tasked with checking well over 1 million signatures. From their reporting, the secretary of state’s office determined the Osage River Gaming petition was just short of the required signature count for ballot certification. After a challenge by the petitioner it was determined that enough additional signatures could be verified to place the petition on the November ballot.”

Just getting their petition approved isn’t enough though, now Missouri voters will decide in November whether to allow another casino.

If passed, it would amend the Missouri constitution to allow for a casino along the Osage River. Currently casinos are only allowed on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. It would also change state law to allow for 14 casino licenses, one more than currently permitted.

This potential casino is expected to add to Missouri’s economy. The petition said it would add 700 jobs to the lake area and millions to the local economy.

In addition to this casino question, Missourians will be asked about restoring abortion access, legalizing sports betting and raising the minimum wage in November.
