We had an absolute blast. We’d been on the island for over a week, but the captain found great snorkel spots we had not hit by land. The boat was beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed, and the stops were just what we were looking for. It was the highlight of our trip!

Rob took us out just before New Years on his beautiful brand new boat. Rob brought us to wonderful peaceful bays to snorkel away from the rain, wind and currents. We appreciated his fantastic suggestions and really enjoyed the day.

No grumpy captains here! After using another popular company in Cruz Bay that kept us on a time table where we could not do half of what was promised, we switched to this awesome crew for our next charter. They were super chill, stuck to the game plan and if we decided to change our plan to spend more time in White Bay there was no issue and no attitude.

We had a great boating excursion with Captain Lee at Sunshine Daydream Charters! He tailored the excursion to what we wanted, and went to locations that were conducive to our snorkeling needs. Highly recommended!

The Baths is truly a unique destination for adventure seekers who enjoy boulder jumping or being off the beaten path.

If you have ventured all the way out to Virgin Gorda, then Cooper Island is a great place for lunch. This tiny island used to be a must stop for pirates and merchants back in the day to get their water and rum barrels repaired. Now it has a great little restaurant and fully-stocked rum bar that serves every rum made in the Caribbean!

While almost every boat going to the BVI will stop in Tortola for customs, this island is straight up neglected by the day boat community. Tortola has the only beaches left in the Virgin Islands where it will be just you on it!

Buck Island is home to dozens of green sea turtles which are as close to tame as a wild turtle can get. Swim with the sea turtles and see other amazing marine life. Around the corner is an old navy barge ship wreck in 30′ of water, a snorkeler’s dream. Water Island is the Jost Van Dyke of the USVI with two awesome beach bars on honeymoon beach that serve amazing food and drinks.

The Caribbean is known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches. The snorkeling here is amazing, and Norman Island has two such spots.

The Indians are pinnacle rock formations jutting out of 60 feet deep water. Exposed to the currents, a constant source of food nourishes the coral and sea life making this one of the best snorkel destinations in the BVI.

The Caves are the legendary resting place of buried treasure that was the inspiration for the book Treasure Island. Three caves await to be explored teeming with marine life and mystery.

Virgin Islands National Park

Virgin Islands National Park is so much more than just its valleys, hills, trails and beaches … it is a record of St. John’s complex history dating back over a thousand years. The Archaeology Program is giving context to the intricate relationship between indigenous Caribbean cultures, European colonial powers, and the Africans brought to the island. St. John is known for hiking, and Virgin Islands National Park has over 20 trails to choose from for hikers of all levels.

For those seeking a casual stroll, accessible boardwalks will take you through historic ruins, salt ponds, and a bird viewing deck. Looking for a more challenging hike? Follow the Reef Bay Trail to the petroglyphs and the old Sugar Mill. The park also features the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, which includes federal submerged lands that support an intricate system of coral reefs, mangrove forests and seagrass beds.

Home to one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Trunk Bay is known for powdery white sand, turquoise waters and postcard-perfect scenery. Part of the Virgin Islands National Park, the beach stretches for over a quarter of a mile, and its soft sand extends into the sea. One of Trunk Bay’s greatest attractions is the 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail, which offers a memorable, guided underwater experience. Trunk Bay also includes a bathhouse, souvenir shop, snack bar, snorkel gear rentals, and lifeguards on duty. You should definitely include Trunk Bay to your St John yacht charter itinerary.

Located on a 170-acre peninsula in Virgin Islands National Park, Caneel Bay is one of the premier vacation resorts in the Caribbean. Once owned by American philanthropist, businessman and conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, the resort was built to blend into the landscape. He was so impressed by St. John’s beauty that he purchased the majority of the island and later donated it to the National Parks Service.

Yacht charter guests in St John can enjoy an excursion to Caneel Bay to indulge in one of its fine dining establishments or to unwind after a hike on one of the adjacent trails. The waters are also great for snorkeling and scuba diving, with a diverse collection of marine life, including parrotfish, angelfish, sea fans, spiny sea urchins, and the occasional sea turtle or barracuda.

Located in St. John’s East End is Hurricane Hole, one of the Caribbean’s best-protected harbors, surrounded by winding roads and spectacular vistas. For history buffs, the Emmaus Moravian Church is a registered historic site, easily recognized by its orange roof and known for its ghost stories.

Annaberg Historic District

The Annaberg Historic District is located on the ruins of the Annaberg Sugar Plantation in Virgin Islands National Park. Owned by William Gottschalk, Annaberg translates to Anna’s Hill and was named for his daughter.

In addition to sugar, molasses and rum were also produced at Annaberg. A trail leads through factory ruins, the slave quarters, the windmill, and the remains of other structures. Placards and signs will guide you along the way, describing the sugar production process and plantation life. Annaberg’s windmill is still a focal point of the site and was one of the largest in the islands.

Explore the Island’s Rich History

The island’s rich history stretches back to AD 300 when the Arawaks migrated from Colombia and Venezuela and settled there. They inhabited the island until driven away by the more aggressive Caribs in 1300. The first Europeans arrived in 1718 with the Danish West India and Guinea Company, naming the island Sankt Jan, or St. John. Under control of the Danish Crown, it became a hub for the sugar industry with a great number of plantations being established on the island due to the favorable growing conditions. In 1917, the United States purchased what is now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands, including St. John, to create a naval base.

My husband and I had the best time on this excursion. This was by far the highlight of our trip!! We got to see different islands and learn so much history about St John and St Thomas. The crew also had snorkel gear so we could snorkel each island we stopped at, we saw a sunken ship, sea turtles, stingrays. The crew was OUTSTANDING, Kenny and Susanna went above and beyond and made the best cocktails. This was such a wonderful experience!! Highly recommend stormy pirates. (I even changed my pick up from st Thomas to St. John and they were so accommodating)

What a way to spend a day. Met the crew at the dock, jumped on the boat, and had the time of our lives for the day. A couple of snorkel stops, a little sightseeing of the beautiful island of St. John, and then lunch at Lime Out Taco Bar. Lime Out was an excellent experience floating in the clear water surrounded by a beautiful area and eating some great tacos. This was my second trip with Stormy Pirates, and I brought the entire family as my first trip with them was great. Thanks to the crew for making this a day to remember.

We had an amazing time on their Sale Pending 2 boat. Captain Rich was funny and a really good Captain, we knew we were in good hands and safe. Tara, the crew member was so authentically attentive and caring. We had drinks all day long, sodas, water, punch, cocktails. They had fruit and muffins waiting, a scheduled pizza delivery on the boat, snorkeling equipment and the knowledge the guests needed to find sea creatures. So many small detailed extras to make the day superb!

Does the boat come with a captain and crew.

Every charter comes with a knowledgeable captain. Charters booked on Juggerknot also come with a First Mate to assist you with anything you might need. 

Where do I get picked up?

We can pick you up just about anywhere! Typically we pick up at the National Park dock on St. John however if you need a pick up on St. Thomas or elsewhere shoot us a message! *Please note some docks are subject to docking fees charged by the marina. Dock fees are subject to change however estimated STT rates are as followed: American Yacht Harbor: $110 pickup/drop off Sapphire Marina: $125 pick up/dropoff

What should I pack?

Towels, reef safe sunblock (no spray sunblock please) & a snack or your favorite beverage. We supply a variety of soda, beer, cocktails, and water all included in your price however if there’s something specific you want- bring it along or let us know!

What does my day look like?

Your day is completely customizable! Whether you want to snorkel all the best reefs, visit secluded bays or just go with the flow. We will make sure your day is one for the books! Our knowledgeable captains + crew love to share local history & give recommendations to all the best spots on land & sea!

Should I bring lunch?

It’s up to you! We have plenty of great lunch spots located on and around the water in the USVI & BVI. A few lunch stops for example could be: Lime Out, Pizza Pi, Lovango, Foxys, Saba Rock, Cooper Island, Pirates Bight to name a few! If you would rather pack a lunch our crew can find a beautiful bay to enjoy your boat picnic!

What if it rains?

We go out rain or shine! In the Virgin Islands passing showers are common and rarely ever stay the whole day. If you have any concerns for weather the day of your charter please feel free to contact us!

Guide to St John

A nature lover’s paradise

The smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands , St John lies just to the east of St Thomas, and is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, with most of the island protected by the Virgin Islands National Park.

Remote, tranquil and undeveloped compared to its neighbours in the Virgin Islands archipelago, St John offers a slower pace of life and is a popular destination for hikers, snorkelers and nature lovers. For yacht rentals , the entry point for most visitors is Cruz Bay, the island’s main town and commercial hub, located on the west coast. The harbour can accommodate yachts of up to 6om in length, and there are restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets here where you can stock up on provisions, as well as a white sand beach around the bay.

Quieter stretches of sand can be found within easy reach of Cruz Bay, such as the secluded Hart Bay, on the south coast, which is also a prime snorkelling spot. The rocky outcrop in the middle of the bay provides a habitat for a variety of Caribbean marine species, including parrotfish, bluehead wrasse and angelfish, as well as an array of hard corals. 

On the north coast, the stunning white sandy beach at Trunk Bay has been voted one of the best in the world, and receives more visitors than any other beach on St John. The sign-posted underwater snorkelling trail offshore is ideal for beginners, who can explore the colourful reefs and the tropical fish that live here at depths between 3m and 6m below the surface. 

Further along the north coast, Watermelon Cay is one of St John’s most popular snorkelling destinations, with its clear water providing excellent visibility for exploring the abundant sea life here, which includes turtles, rays, conches and small sharks. 

St John is a great place for scuba diving, too, with several sites worth investigating around the coast. One of the best is around Carval Rock, off the north coast, where experienced divers can explore 24m below the surface.

Outstanding day on the water with Captain Shane. He took wonderful care of our group which was two families. We stopped at Lovango for lunch it was great and all spots for snorkeling were very nice. He was just an outstanding host, we will be back again because of Captain Shane.

Boat charters likely to be hit hardest by proposed amenity fee increases in the VI National Park

ST. JOHN – For the first time in close to 10 years the Virgin Islands National Park is looking to increase amenity fees, which the National Park Service says will enhance the visitor experience through things like improved facilities and a greater presence of park personnel.

But at a public meeting held Wednesday evening to address the proposed fee increases, it was clear many residents were concerned about the proposal. Close to 60 people crammed into a small conference room at the new Resource Management and Science building at Lind Point on St. John, where the conversation largely revolved around the impact the new and expanded fees could have on the charter boat industry.

Sara Richter, a St. John resident and charter boat captain, spoke at the meeting after doing what she called “some quick math” to break down what this new fee structure could look like for a 30-foot charter vessel.

“The goal is probably about 200 trips in a year, but 150 is realistic,” Richter said, adding that she now pays an annual commercial use authorization fee of $300 per vessel. “With this proposal, that would be $10,500 for one vessel per year. More if it’s a larger boat, more if it’s more busy. Two things can be true at once. You guys definitely need to raise some fees, but $10,000 per vessel, per year is extraordinarily excessive.”

Under the proposal, boats would have to pay $1 per foot of the vessel per day to stop at the Virgin Islands National Park finger pier, located in Cruz Bay. In other words, a 30-foot vessel would pay a fee of $30 each day they stopped at the finger pier. Additionally, the proposal seeks to expand the fees associated with the use of moorings in the National Park. Currently, mooring fees are only required for overnight use, with those vessels paying a fee of $26. But under the new amenity fee proposal, boats would be charged a flat daily fee of either $40 or $60, depending on boat length, whether they use the mooring for 30 minutes or 24 hours. For charter boats, these expanded fees would be paid in addition to the annual commercial use authorization fee, which varies between $300 to $575, and allows them to do business in the National Park.

Kelly Quinn also spoke at the meeting, saying she had lived on St. John for 24 years and owned a business that operated commercial vessels within the park.

“I'm absolutely a proponent of fees, but as the daughter of a judge I’m a proponent of fairness,” Quinn said. “In looking at the proposed fees, I see that there is a possible gross discrimination against the boater population.”

Virgin Islands National Park Superintendent Penny Del Bene said that while she appreciated the comments, it was important to understand that the fees associated with boating were high due to the cost of maintaining docks and moorings.

“Those are some of the areas where those amenities are the most expensive for us to maintain,” Del Bene said. “So, when you look across the board at the different amenities that we have, those are high dollar amenity costs associated with them. So that’s part of the challenge that we have.”

But Del Bene’s reasoning didn’t satisfy Quincey Pentrack, who asked about an alternative method for collecting fees to keep the dock maintained.

“You’re saying you need to come up with money to help maintain that dock, right?” Pentrack asked, suggesting that boaters pay an annual fee rather than every time a boat docks at the pier. “You have so many boats that are between St. John; people living on them, public, private, charter companies. Like, why does it have to be every time a boat touches the dock, you get money?”

According to Del Bene, the proposed amenity fee increases were based on comparability studies conducted by the National Park, which looked at the prices of comparable public and private services within the Virgin Islands and nearby areas.

But the changes in amenity fees wouldn’t be limited to boaters. The proposal would bring the price of an individual day pass to St. John’s famous Trunk Bay to $10 from $5, as well as establish a $60 annual pass, the closest thing to a local discount under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. At Caneel Bay, the proposal calls for a new $10 parking fee.

Carmen Wesselhoft, a former senator who operates a taxi on St. John, asked how these fees would improve the park overall.

“If you’re going to increase fees, give me service,” Wesselhoft said. “These roads need serious maintenance. I’m a taxi driver, and we’re driving in the middle of the road to avoid accidents, our passengers are getting hit, and it’s not uncommon, you have catch and keep that’s hitting the passengers.”

In response, Del Bene agreed and said the National Park Service wanted to do better. She said the reason for increasing fees was so NPS could have more staff and more resources to address those kinds of concerns.

Kurt Marsh, Jr., a St. John resident and community activist, was one of the more outspoken attendees, expressing frustration about the focus of the conversation.

“I think it’s fair that the people who make a living and benefit from this park, that is extractive of the people of St. John and the legacies of the people of St. John, pay for that experience,” Marsh said.

He went on to say that while people at the meeting were worried about paying docking and parking fees, he was concerned about the park’s lack of recognition for the ancestral native people of St. John and their legacies.

“I think this conversation is asinine,” Marsh said. “It’s ridiculous that people are talking about what do you have to pay to enter a space. We have to pay to come from St. Thomas to come home to St. John. These facilities need to be built, they need to be maintained, and somebody has to do it. If people are commercializing that space, then you should contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of that space. I think that’s fair. So, let’s be real about these conversations that we’re having tonight. Their mandate is for cultural and natural preservation, and all we’re talking about tonight is extraction.”

Senator at-large candidate Lorelei Monsanto questioned whether the public’s comments would truly be taken into consideration.

“If the people decide that they don’t want some of these increases, would you all really, truly honor and respect that?” Monsanto asked.

Del Bene said it would depend on the type of feedback received.

“So, I think that we have to really process it all, and it depends on what it is,” she said.

The Virgin Islands National Park will be accepting comments and recommendations on the proposed amenity fee changes through October 9. Comments will be reviewed as they come in, and the final proposal will be sent to the regional director on October 11. The public will be notified whether the regional director accepts or rejects the proposal by December 1. If approved, the proposed fee increases will begin January 1, 2025.
