A Summary of Motor Yacht RIO RITA

Originating from the The Feadship De Vries Shipyard yacht builder in the Netherlands the RIO RITA is 56 m 183 (foot) in length. Completed by 1984 the comparatively traditional internal styling proffers the traditional interpretations from Terence Disdale Design and their approach to interior yacht design. Superyacht RIO RITA is able to accommodate up to 16 guests with 28 crew. Her old, former or build project names were 628. She will reach a maximum speed of 16 knots.

RIO RITA is s classic 52m Feadship built in 1984, and purchased the next year by her current Greek owners. When 21 years old, the yacht was then refitted by Amels who carefully modernized this beauty. Amels replaced the square transom stern with a swim platform and symmetrical curved stairs to the main deck which stretched RIO RITA from 52 to 56 meters and increased her top speed from 15 to 16 knots.

Build & Design for Luxury Yacht RIO RITA

De Voogt Naval Architects was the naval architect involved in the professional nautical composition for RIO RITA. Also the company De Voogt Naval Architects and Diana Yacht Design skillfully collaborated on this project. Interior designer Terence Disdale Design was selected for the overall interior styling. Created by The Feadship De Vries Shipyard this yacht was fabricated in the yacht producing country of the Netherlands. She was officially launched in Aalsmeer in 1984 before being delivered to the owner. The main hull was built out of steel. The motor yacht superstructure component is fabricated extensively with aluminium. With a beam of 9.08 metres or 29.8 ft RIO RITA has fairly large internal space. A fairly shallow draught of 2.83m (9.3ft) selects the list of certain harbours she can enter, contingent on their minimum characteristics. She had refit maintenance and changes completed by 2006.

Her propulsion units are twin screw propellers. The engine of the ship creates 1055 horse power (or 776 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined output for the boat is therefore 2110 HP or 1553 KW. As far as stabalisers are concerned she was supplied with Vosper.

About Rio Rita

Built for a British owner, Rio Rita was a collaboration with Diana Yacht Design and interior designer Terence Disdale. The look of bleached oak, rounded window mouldings and platform beds on a rounded frame set a style trend, while the Diana Yacht Design’s exterior can be seen in the horizontal detailing on the forward superstructure and created a classic look. The 52.00-metre yacht was designed to be a comfortable home with five staterooms and accommodation for up to twelve crew, a large crew complement for the day.

Built in steel by De Vries shipyard in 1984 after a design by Diana Yacht Design and naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design and De Voogt Naval Architects. She underwent an extensive refit in 2006 at Amels shipyard, which included a hull extension and overall modernization to give guests easier access to the water and land and enjoy a more tranquil yachting experience.

Twin 1080 Hp 3512 DI-TA Caterpillar diesel engines allow a cruising speed of 14 knots with a maximum speed of 16 knots, giving her a cruising range of 3645 nautical miles.

Her interior by Terrence Disdale Design can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 cabins, consisting of one full-beam owners cabin on the main deck, two double staterooms, and two twin guest cabins, all with en-suite bathroom. For the crew, there are 13 berths in 8 cabins, all with en-suite bathrooms and a separate crew mess and galley.

Her shaded aft deck has seating for up to 10 guests at the dining table for al fresco entertaining and dining. Up the stairs is the sundeck, featuring plenty of space for sunbathing.

RIO RITA is asking € 12.700.000.

“I am prompted to write a few lines about Reo Moana after seeing her coming through the Albert Channel and arriving in the Bay of Islands, she looks so different with the extra top hamper that has been added. Her current owners have recorded that she was built by Roger Carey, this is not correct, see below.

I worked at the Carey yard and in 1963 we commenced work on a Roger Carey design of a 51’x15’8”x 7’ fishing boat for John Buchanan of Cascade River. She was carvel planked in karri and launched in 1964 named “Compass Rose” The moulds of this Roger Carey design were then taken across to another Picton boat builder Bob Swanson. Bob’s yard was directly opposite the Carey yard at the southern end of the harbour, it was formerly the site of Ernie Lane’s boatyard.

Bob was commissioned to build a boat to this Roger Carey design by Bill and Sylvia Kenny of Red Funnel Launches and an associate. She was built multi skin and was powered by a 6LX Gardner. There was talk that the boat was to do a Pacific cruise that was to include Tahiti but the cruise did not come to fruition. She was put into service with the Red funnel fleet, it was also at this time that the pine plantations in the Sounds were starting to be harvested and with a substantial tow post Reo Moana was regularly used to tow rafts of logs to Picton. Her spacious after deck also proved ideal for work in and around the Marlborough Sounds.

In the above photo she can be seen in the Red Funnel colours, I was involved with salvaging the fishing vessel Ascot that had sunk in Cloudy Bay and we used Reo Moana as the salvage vessel to tow Ascot into Port Underwood to pump her out and then continue the tow to Picton.

Seeing her now, photos below, I suppose she is handy for charters in and around Auckland, but with the windage from the considerable extra top hamper that she now carries, I think she would be more that a handful going alongside wharves in the Sounds in some of the extreme wind conditions that can be experienced at times.”

Its only a mystery because the broker selling it obviously doesn’t want to sell the vessel. Why else would you not include the vessel’s name & designer / builder details?

I can tell you this bridgedecker is made of wood, 42′ long, built in 1929, is powered by a 75hp 5LW Gardner diesel & sleeps 6. Her current home is Picton & at $49k ono its appears a reasonable buy – unless of course it was built in India 🙂

Just re-read the listing & hows this – they list the design of the tender (Seabird)………………

NZ Kauri Carvel construction traditionally built 12.8m launch, from Collings & Bell shipyard in St Mary’s Bay, Auckland. Launched in 1929 and originally named “MV Rio Rita” this Ex survey vessel was tasked for 40 years as a tourist passenger ferry and royal mail vessel in the Marlborough Sounds.

Loads of history associated with this traditional timber launch. See waitematawoodys.com/2014/05/20/a-mystery-boat-200514/  . There’s further discussion regarding “MV Rio Rita” serving in 1942 for a period as a Battery Artificer for a gun crew in the Sounds out from Picton.

Renamed “Resolution” in 1971 when she relocated to Resolution Bay, Marlborough Sounds. For approximately the last 15 years she has been owned and maintained by a former boat builder in Omokoroa, Tauranga. Resolution has spent these long summers engaged in extended cruising up the coast between Tauranga and the Bay of Islands. This owner maintained her well and installed beautiful cabinetry throughout the interior, with materials in keeping with the vessels vintage and pedigree.

“Resolution” was recently acquired from this estate, as part of a “boat & berth” package in Tauranga’s Sulphur Point Marina. As traditional and beautiful as she is – Resolution is now surplus to requirements and seriously on the market following a significant price reduction. While Resolution requires a small degree of ongoing maintenance, nothing is urgent & work can wait until after the coming summer boating season.

Her new owner (boat & berth purchaser) has had a pre-purchase condition survey (dated Nov 2014) completed by Pacific Rim Marine Survey’s Limited, which will be made available to any prospective purchaser. Owner needs to sell her to make space for his existing boat so the price reflects this, I understand offers around $58,000 will buy her. Ok woody boaters – todays post is an enigma to me. The boat is unknown to me, but she is flying a CYA burgee, a check of the CYA database shows no match so the vessel is either belong to a very distant lapsed member or someone has ‘borrowed’ the burgee.

The photo is ex the very talented pro photographer Dean Wright & most likely shot in the BOI.

Anyone able to shed some light on the vessel?

It also appears she is currently in Tauranga & listed on trademe (thanks Andrew Pollard for the tip). Photo added above.

Update Lots of chat about todays mystery boat in the comments section – check it out. I can confirm it is ‘Rio Rita’ > ‘Resolution’ . I have also added a great photo sent to me by Harold Kidd of her on launch day, 1929, at St. Marys Bay, she was built by Collings & Bell & launched as a tourist passenger boat, note the open cockpit forward. Looked rather grand, quite different now days.

Yachts in your shortlist Two challengers for one Cathedral City Council member; another is unopposed Cathedral City voters will be selecting two councilmembers and deciding whether they want a local sales tax increase this November.  The council seats for Districts 1 and 2 are up for election. Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Ross, who represents District 2, is running for re-election unopposed. Businessman Mark Scharaga and retired businessman Michael Hayes are challenging Councilmember Rita Lamb to represent District 1. District 1 roughly encompasses the southwest portion of the city, including the cove neighborhood and the majority of East Palm Canyon Drive where downtown is located. Michael Hayes: Hayes, a retired travel agency business owner and veteran, has been living in Cathedral City for 20 years. He said he decided to run for council for a number of reasons, including believing there is a lack of involvement from District 1 residents and what he called bad city leadership during Hilary. The storm last year devastated Cathedral City and other parts of the Coachella Valley with heavy rain that caused damaging floods. Hayes said it was a "horror show," the city wasn't prepared and residents unfamiliar with flooding situations didn't know what to do. He said he believes the city needs better leadership from its police department and to connect better with community members such as seniors. Some ways to do that, he said, would be town hall meetings and neighborhood watch programs.  “I'm a member of this community for so long. It's a beautiful community, but we're becoming a bit static … we just need more action from the individual meetings. We need people to participate in city town hall meetings,” Hayes said. “We need, really, to reach out to our communities.”  One instance where he believes the city should have been more involved was The Barracks’ closure . The LGBTQ bar closed after over 30 years while dealing with code and occupancy issues with the city, and allegations it violated state liquor license terms when it hosted lewd conduct. Hayes, who is gay, said it was a historic LGBTQ site and the city should’ve at least shown an effort in keeping it open. City Manager Charlie McClendon told The Desert Sun at the time that the city had been working with the bar to increase its legal occupancy and the building improvements the city required were normal for a business of its size. Rita Lamb: Voters first elected Lamb in a 2019 special election to fill Mayor Gregory Pettis’ seat after he died. She was then re-elected in 2020. She is a retired school principal and has lived in Cathedral City for 24 years.  “Cathedral City is on fire, and I'd love to be part of that,” she said. “And there are so many wonderful things that we're doing.”  Lamb said the city’s strategic plan has helped it prioritize important issues and get community input. If she’s elected again, she said, she plans to continue the city’s emergency preparedness events with the fire department and community discussions with the police department. She also wants to keep working on improving all the city’s streets, and expand on parks and community events. Other leadership positions she’d held in the city before being elected to the council include being public arts commissioner and board member for the senior center, according to Cathedral City’s website.  Mark Scharaga: Scharaga purchased his Cathedral City home two years ago and said he has been living there full-time for six months. He is the owner and CEO of Sora Partners, a technology company. He said the city needs fresh ideas and a more proactive instead of reactive style of management. One of his goals on the council would be better emergency preparedness. He said the city was ill-prepared during Hilary. Scharaga also said the city needs to improve its economic development and could do a better job of using its resources in order to bring in and help more local businesses. “We have a lot of retail space that's sitting empty, that's not being utilized,” Scharaga said. “And these are things that we could do with whether we're doing business incubators or other economic programs the city can be making use of that are offered from at the state level, the county level and the federal level to help drive business and opportunity within our community.”  Scharaga, who is gay, said the city needs to support its LGBTQ community so it has safe spaces to gather and wants to make sure its members have a voice. The city hosts an annual LGBT+ Days event and has LGBT liaisons for its police and administrative departments. "I think we can be better, I'm not saying that we're not doing the majority of the things we should be doing but there's always the next level," he said. His other goals include better utilizing the Cathedral City Community Amphitheater Park to have more gatherings, ensuring the police department has necessary resources, and programs for seniors and youth.  District 2 is roughly made up of the southeast portion of the city, which includes Ocotillo Square where Ocotillo Park is located and the Rio del Sol housing development. Nancy Ross: Ross was elected to the council in 2020. She is currently serving as mayor pro tem, which is a rotational position in Cathedral City like the mayor. She is running unopposed for District 2. Ross permanently moved to Cathedral City in 2015, and served on the city’s public arts commission and cannabis and homeless task forces, according to the city’s website.  The sales tax measure on the upcoming ballot proposes to increase the city’s sales tax by half a cent per dollar. Cathedral City’s current sales tax rate is 8.75%, which consists of the statewide sales tax of 7.25%, the county tax of 0.5% and the city’s current 1% tax. If voters approve the increase, approved, the rate will become 9.25%, tied with Palm Springs for the highest among Riverside County cities. The funds generated, estimated at an additional $5 million a year, would be used to support city services like maintaining emergency response services and repairing streets. Councilmembers will have the ultimate say on how the money is used. But a resident committee suggested it be used for things like annexing into the Desert Recreation District for parks and recreation services, a community recreation center and budgeting an additional $1 million a year for maintaining streets.
