A pair of Yanmar 4-cylinder turbo diesel engines with 3-bladed Gori feathering propellers provides a comfortable motoring speed of 10 knots under the engine.  Coupled with a fuel capacity of 200 gallons, the boat has a motoring range of approximately 1000 nm.

DC Electrical Power

The primary house bank comprises (3) Lithionics 285AH 24v batteries with an advanced dual-channel battery management system. Each engine has a 185ah 24v alternator, and when combined, both engines can charge the house bank quickly.  Additionally, there are 16 Solbian ultra-thin solar panels totaling 1700 watts. 

AC Electrical Power

Nemo includes a pair of Victron Quattro battery chargers/inverters to supply AC power. There are outlets located conveniently throughout the vessel.

Environmental

Nemo features electric tint smart windows in the salon, enabling privacy and shading (as well as substantial weight savings) with the push of a button. Nemo also includes a robust aircon system via a total of 44,000 BTU. The system can direct conditioned air to either of the aft cabins and can rapidly cool the large salon, especially with the solar reflection of the electro-tint salon windows.

Instrumentation

Nemo features (3) 19” B&G black glass displays powered by the H5000 processor. A full set of B&G H5000 racing instruments is on board. This “performance” level system has multiple dedicated displays for the different trimmers, driver, and tactician ensuring that people have just the right information available to perform at their best. Besides wind, speed, and position information, advanced information such as sheet loads, tack loads, mast rotation, and optimum performance is displayed and recorded. This data is also available over an internal wifi network for use by phone and tablet apps, as well as an integrated Macbook running navigation and performance management software.

Fresh Water

Nemo includes a Spectra Newport 400c watermaker and dual 80-gallon freshwater tanks. 

Digital Switching

Nemo uses a digital switching system supplied by Kinetic Scientific to reduce weight and improve convenience. Many complex tasks are easily accomplished via graphic touchscreen systems.

Communications

Nemo utilizes a B&G V90 VHF radio & B&G AIS for terrestrial communications

Nemo's fully equipped galley includes a pair of DC refrigerators/freezers, a 4-burner gas cooktop, and a gas oven. There is enough equipment to cruise with 8 guests comfortably.

Mast/Rigging

Featuring a Lorima high modulus carbon fiber rotating mast and boom. Custom, carbon longeron with hydraulic tack lines. 

Curved Z-shaped daggerboards (with powered rake and up/down control) and T-rudders (with powered flaps) create vertical lift and dampen pitch for a smoother, faster, safer ride.

Sail Handling

Push button hydraulic mainsheet and powered traveler allow safe and reliable control of the mainsail from multiple locations around the boat and via digital interfaces (ipad, etc). All winches are Harken 990 (6). Custom longeron features powered control of the tack lines. All sails are on locks.

HH66 Catamaran Review

Over the years I’ve enjoyed some pretty special moments under sail: steering a big sloop downwind in the Pacific trades en route to Hawaii, crossing the Atlantic on a powerful 60-foot cat, rounding Cape Horn under spinnaker on a stout steel cutter. But nothing — and I mean nothing — quite prepared me for the pure, sheer joy of driving the exquisite HH66 on a tight reach on Chesapeake Bay.

Sitting in the comfortable molded seat outboard and aft on the portside quarter (an identical helm is situated to starboard), with one hand I grasped the light, balanced tiller; at the same time, the fingertips of my other hovered over the push buttons in the armrest that controlled all the critical sailhandling and performance features. Without even moving, the traveler (up and down), main and jib sheets (in and out), and daggerboards (raised and lowered) were at my command. So too was the “panic button” you’d press to immediately dump and de-power the mainsail and vang in the unfortunate circumstance of becoming suddenly overpowered in a gusty breeze. One must pay close attention when driving this steed.

I must confess that it was hard to do while tearing across the bay in a sweet 12- to 14-knot breeze. Bearing off in the lulls and feathering up in the puffs, steering the boat was a dynamic experience, like driving a Porsche on a winding road. Meanwhile, the speedo ascended in ever-increasing increments: 8.2 knots, 10.4 knots, 12.5 knots. It seemed effortless, as if it was all unfolding in slow motion. That is, until you glanced over the side and saw the water rushing past in a blue blur. That, my friends, is entertainment.

Our Boat of the Year judging team was justifiably impressed with the cat. “Holy moly, it’s a carbon 66-foot catamaran that displaces less than 40,000 pounds,” said Tim Murphy. “This clearly is not for mere mortals; it’s a boat that’s intended to be sailed with a professional crew, and they’d need some serious training to handle it. It’s designed by Morrelli & Melvin, and it’s a boat where they talk upfront about flying a hull on a big cruise-worthy catamaran, as if it were a Hobie cat. Along with foiling, as we saw in the America’s Cup, this is a new concept in how we sail our boats. To go out there and do that on purpose is remarkable.”

“I’d agree with the excitement as far as the sailing performance goes,” said Ed Sherman. “With the tiller in hand (there is also an inside steering station like the one on the HH55; see “The Future is Now,” opposite), and the ready access to the sailing controls, it was a great experience because the tiller is so light and easy. The boat just snaps to with every move you make. So that was quite a treat. But I do agree that this isn’t a couples boat, or at least one that a couple would sail alone. There’s just too much going on. I don’t see a ­middle-aged husband-and-wife team sailing this boat around the world, at least without having some people on board to help them out.”

“I didn’t know that sailing a high-performance 66-foot catamaran with a tiller was on my bucket list, but I’ve added it to my mine and checked it off!” said Bill Bolin. “You’d want some experienced hands to help sail it. I think I counted 19 ‘strings’ — halyards, sheets, reefing lines and so forth — in the forward cockpit, where all the actual job of sailing the boat takes place. That’s a lot to keep track of.”

“Our heads were spinning,” seconded Murphy, to which Bolin replied, “Exactly right!”

Like its 55-foot sister ship, the workmanship on the HH66 is simply impeccable. The construction materials and details are similar to the smaller boat. It would be impossible to describe all the neat features of the boat in a short review. The staterooms are luxurious, and the builder encourages customization in the accommodations plan. A locker with the generator, hydraulics, batteries and so forth is located forward, for ideal weight distribution. The coachroof of our test boat was adorned with a couple dozen flexible solar panels to maximize energy independence. Heck, the bloody boat we inspected had a built-in piano!

Of course, all this ­technology and craftsmanship comes at a cost, in this example north of $4 million. It’s ­obviously not for the faint of ­wallet. But as a testament to how far contemporary boat ­design and ­execution has evolved, it’s nothing less than an ­engineering marvel. As for ­sailing the HH66, some would call it a near-spiritual ­experience. And they’d get no argument from me.

Multimillion-dollar sailing cats are a small but fiercely contested niche, mostly dominated by European brands. So it’s worth paying attention when an eight-year-old builder from China is considered a legitimate challenger to pedigreed French names such as Privilege and Lagoon .

HH Catamarans , with a line ranging from fast, wave-jumping 50-foot cruisers to 88-foot ocean yachts, has gained a loyal following in the US and Europe, in part because COO Paul Hakes—he’s one of the H’s in “HH”—is obsessed with mating upscale interiors to featherweight racing hulls.

Hakes assembled what he calls a “mini-UN” of expat experts at HH’s production headquarters in Xiamen, China. Naval architecture is done by the California-based firm Morelli & Melvin . The yachts are built by local labor: With an average of 40,000 man-hours per cat, the labor savings add up significantly, allowing HH to focus on superior performance through exotic materials and expensive carbon-fiber weaves. “We’re determined to make HH the Ferrari of sailing cats,” Hakes says.

Befitting that famed Italian marque, the HH55 and HH66 are sleek, nimble and beautiful vessels, though the HH88, with its exponentially larger interior and oceangoing hull, is more
 like a Mercedes-AMG G-Wagen. But to stick to automotive analogies, it’s worth mentioning that HH’s upstart nature makes it more like Lamborghini , founded to challenge Enzo Ferrari’s already successful brand—and we all know how that turned out.

What’s it like to fly a sexy, clearcoated carbon-fiber hull on the 66-foot-long, badass-fast HH66 “cruising” catamaran?

Well, I had to fly about 10,000 miles (over the North Pole no less) to fly-a-hull and find out just how fast, luxurious, and well-built a brand-new HH66 catamaran is but man, I’m so glad I did. And since I have a bunch of stories planned that will be coming out in the coming months about how the HH66 sails, the progress of the first HH55 that’s just about completed, and an in-depth report about how these all-carbon rocket ships are built by the Hudson Yacht Group in Xiamen, China, I can’t give away too much now.

But, since I just got back from two-full days of sailing new HH66 in decent breeze with the designer (and legendary multihull maven Gino Morrelli ). And since I spent almost the same amount of time in the factory meeting the Hudson Yacht Group’s multi-national boatbuilding team, and digging in to the details of how these all-carbon catamarans are built. And since all the images of the factory and flying a hull on the waters off Xiamen (and eating dim sum and getting a crazy foot massage while my Chinese masseuse watched “Mission Impossible” on TV too) are still fresh in my pre-holiday mind, it seems unfair not to provide a little preview of the stories to come. And needless to say, flying a hull on this bad boy was fun.

So, I’ll just state the obvious that it takes courage, skill, and significant investment to build an 66-foot-long all-carbon fast cat. But since the hulls and bridgdeck of HH66 Night Fury I sailed on were simply covered with multiple layers of clearcoat over the raw carbon, it’s clear that HH president and transplanted New Zealander Paul Hakes has all three in abundance.

And as you can see in these shots, Hakes and company accomplished the extremely difficult task of building large catamaran with an impossibly sexy carbon checkerboard weave outerskin (that has long, flat sides that show every tiny ripple and imperfection) that’s simply covered and sealed with epoxy with clearcoat. No paint. No fairing compound. Just pure carbon.

I also saw hulls that were in various states of completion. These photos show the light color carbon hulls take on after they are sandblasted to accept primer and paint properly.

While this cat that’s much further along has been primed, its ports have been cut out, trampoline holes have been drilled, and the interior is being installed.

Cosmopolitan 66

German entrepreneur Christian Braun and Iván Salas Jefferson of Iddes Yachts are launching Cosmopolitan Yachts, a new brand of custom-built aluminum electric catamarans. The first model they’ve announced is a 66-footer designed for unlimited offshore cruising, with construction expected to begin in October 2022.

The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.

In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.

Top Luxury Power Catamarans

The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

• Fountaine Pajot MY44 : A family-oriented cat suitable for long-range cruising and aimed at owner-operators. 
• Silent Yachts 60 : This is a catamaran that can cruise comfortably for long distances using emissions-free solar-electric propulsion.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Quick Specifications

Silent Yachts 60

Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Aquila 47 Molokai

With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.

Following a range of successful models that were designed by Morrelli & Melvin (the original 62, then the 48 and the Gunboat 66 ), Peter Johnstone, the original Gunboat founder before Grand Large Yachting days, turned to British record breaking yacht Designer Nigel Irens for the next cat to come out of the GB bag: the Gunboat 60 .

This design was quite an evolutionary step for the famous marque, with a more curvaceous look, a hull chine, axe bows and big near vertical wrap around windows for 360 degree views. 60 foot is the sweet spot for a smooth ride, plenty of living space and  300+ miles daily passages in good conditions. Not many boats can pull off those kinds of miles in the day. The O-Yachts Class 6 catamaran comes to mind, and HH catamarans, but Gunboat was bossing this market segment first.

This is the key section for Gunboat owners isn’t it? Gunboats are all about speed, and Nigel Irens doesn’t disappoint with his Gunboat 60 design. You will be sailing at true wind speed and even over in lighter airs and she pinches close to the wind if needed (40 degrees TWA is not an issue on these boats). If you have spent this kind of money on a boat, the chances are that you will have a full sail locker with a Code 0 to do the work upwind in lighter airs and a Gennaker to fly off the wind, not to mention a range of sails inbetween.

When the breeze fills in, you will comfortably hitting double digits in knots and sailed to her full potential she will sit in the twenties, but you will need to be alert and on your toes. 300-mile days are your target in good conditions. This is the kind of performance that has inspired other manufacturers such as Balance Catamarans and Kinetic to name a few.

The Gunboat record is over 400.

And there are plenty of safety features on the 60 to help you manage all of this power. Digital load sensors monitor the stresses on the rig in real time and, if you are not the kind of sailor who relishes flying a hull in a multi-million dollar yacht, you can program the system to automatically release the sheets on the mainsheet and the headsail when rig loads hits a limit.

Even so, the Gunboat 60 is not designed to be sailed by a novice. You will need some serious miles under your belt before you slip into the helm seat, or employ a seasoned captain

As with all Gunboats, the construction was high end racing yacht quality. The hull laminate is carbon fiber set in epoxy resin, fully infused and post-cured over a CoreCell foam core. All the fittings and components inside are foam-cored and skinned with wood veneers to keep the weight off and the look luxurious. The rig is carbon with a Marstrom rotating wing-section mast and aramid fiber rigging. All the Furling gear was sourced from Facnor.

One big design change from previous models was the installation of carbon centerboards instead of daggerboards. This makes for a safer structure along with carbon retractable rudders, which are retractable. The centerboards are operated with by hydraulic rams and fitted with shear pins that allow the boards to kick up in the event of a grounding.

The narrow hulls slice through the water and she sports a high bridgedeck, and nothing forward of the mast except the nets and a long carbon bowsprit. The hulls and bridgedeck are constructed in one mold, and there is no forward beam.

The Gunboat 60 is set up with the forward cockpit that has proven so popular with owners: just behind the mast and forward of the saloon. , All working lines come into this space and are managed by a set of three Lewmar winches. She’s set up to sail with a short handed crew. You helm on one of two Edson carbon wheels : one outside and one inside. Take your pick according to the conditions and weather.

From the Saloon wheel, you can see the headsail telltales and the mainsail above through two deck hatches. The mainsheet is managed from here or dumped with a big safety one button if you feel the boat starting to become overpowered. The nav station is tucked neatly forward on the starboard side with a plotter and autopilot in front of the wheel as well.

Behind the helm position, the cockpit opens aft into a large, comfortable, open space with sofas, tables, and a window through to the galley on the port side. There’s an electric barbecue aft.

Despite the fact that this is a 60 foot boat, the living accommodation is not huge (there’s a trade off for all of that speed), but it is hardly cramped either and luxuriously fitted. The layout is normally four double-berth staterooms, plus a crew cabin forward to port with two single berths. This space is sometimes configured as an office or workspace.  The berths in the midship staterooms are athwartships, and aft, the berths are smaller and run along the hulls. There is plenty of light down below through hull ports and deck hatches.

Large, near vertical windows enclose the saloon, with the galley to port and dining area to starboard. Once you have the two windows and all of the doors open at anchor, the breeze flows though – one of the defining designs of most Gunboats. There’s plenty of working space in the galley with all of the mod cons that you’d expect on a luxury performance catamaran.

Many Gunboat 60s were designed to leave a small footprint when under power with a hybrid propulsion system. Optional electric motors turn the propellers on retractable sail drive legs powered by a large lithium-ion battery pack. These are charged by solar and the props when you are sailing. There are a pair of generators for backup.

Many of the Gunboat 60s, such as Moonwave, have further developed the power system over the years.

The boat motors up to 9 knots for around half an hour before the generators kick in. If you are just using the engines to get in and out of marinas, you will have considerably longer on battery power alone. The idea, of course, is to get the sails up as quick as possible. In anything over 4 knots of wind, you should be sailing.

Fast Boat to China

In a bid to reduce manufacturing costs, Peter Johnstone moved production of the Gunboats from South Africa to Hudson Marine in China. The relationship turned sour following multiple warranty claims on the boats, which were mostly do do with the new centreboard design. Johnstone accused Hudson Wang of sub standard manufacturing quality, and Wang counter sued claiming that the problem was with the original design. It is not unheard of to go through these issues with new boat designs, especially at this kind of high tech level. The problems were eventually resolved, but the damage was gone and the 2 parties fell out over the issue.

Johnstone moved production for his next model, the 55, to the US and later ran into financial difficulties while Hudson Wang ended up launching a performance catamaran brand of his own.

How Much Does a Gunboat 60 cost? What is the Price Ticket? Gunboat 60s are no longer in production, so you will need to buy second hand to get your hands on one. There aren’t many, and they hold their price, as do most Gunboats. When they were launched, the list price was around $2.5m. You’ll still likely pay up to $2m for one today.

What Happened Between Gunboat and Hudson Marine? Gunboat International, the North Carolina yard, sued the Chinese yard accusing the builder of not finishing the build properly on the Gunboat 60s and that the yard refused to pay warranty claims on constructed yachts they claimed weren’t built properly. Hudson Yacht and Marine Industries denied the allegations and then countersued Gunboat, saying that design flaws, not builder error, led to the warranty claims and that it was not contractually obliged to fix mistakes that were a result of the design. In the end Gunboat picked up the repair tab (some $10m) and then tried to terminate the contract with HYM. However, the Chinese yard refused to return the molds and tooling, according to Peter Johnstone. Johnstone then accused the company and its owner, Hudson Wang, of launching a “knockoff brand” of carbon fiber performance catamarans onto the market despite signing a non-compete contract.

What Was the Cause of the Dispute? Most of the problems came from the centreboard design, which was new to the market at the time. There were also problems with the hydraulic propeller system (or “skeg system”). Gunboat also accused Hudson of “deliberately, willfully and maliciously obtaining Gunboat’s trade secrets with the intention of utilizing said trade secrets in connection with, and incorporating them into, the competing HH Catamaran 55 and 66 series, and HYM and Wang did, in fact, appropriate and utilize said trade secrets for their own benefit and profit.”

Safe to say that this is all water under the bridge now. The Gunboat brand was sold to Grand Large Yachting who now manufacture the 68, a completely different design developed by VPLP. And yes, HH still market the 55 and 66, 2 boats designed by Morrelli and Melvin who designed the earlier Gunboats. It’s a small sailing world.

Build Specification

10 features included with every kraken, one piece hull and integral zero keel.

All Kraken’s comprise of a one piece hull and integral Zero Keel which houses a sealed lead ballast bulb.

The hull lay up is built using 17-22 layers of composite engineered fabrics bonded together by vinyl-ester resins. The general hull thickness is a minimum of 15mm. Aramid fibre composites (Kevlar) is also used in all impact areas, the bow stem, the front of the keel and the keel base.

The hull topsides incorporate 25mm closed cell foam, the FRP foam sandwich which extends from 40cm (16″) above the waterline to deck level. This structure improves insulation and overall hull form rigidity. A Kraken’s hull and structures exhibited no flexing.

ALPHA™ Rudder System

The rudder and steering system is the most vulnerable element of any yacht, in recognition of this, the Kraken engineering and design team have developed the world’s safest rudder and steering system.

The rudder is fully protected and supported by a full length skeg with an integral stainless steel beam, which has at its foot the first rudder bearing. The 3 ¾” (82mm) rudder stock has a second (main) bearing at its centre as it passes into the hull at the transom. This bearing is accessible and removable from the inside of transom. Even at sea!

The rudder stock has a removable third bearing at the top inside the stern lazarette. The rudder itself, comprises an integral stainless steel armature, which is welded to the stainless steel rudder stock. It is then finished and faired using FRP/vinyl-ester. 

Solid crash zone at bow waterline

A heavily reinforced ‘solid crash zone’ below the anchor chain locker, incorporating high density closed cell foam with substantial reinforcements in aramid fibres extends from above the waterline to 40cm below it. This solid area runs through to the first sealed bulkhead providing maximum collision protection.

Structural frames and stringers

All longitudinal and latitudinal structures are individually bonded in during the hull layup stages with no prefabricated structural components . The video below explains how the structural frames and stringers work on a Kraken Yacht.

All bulkheads are vacuum infused FRP with 25mm structural foam core. No plywood is used. There are two watertight sealed bulkheads forward, one between the anchor locker and the forward lazarette and a second one between the forward lazarette and the interior. A further watertight, sealed bulkhead at the stern divides the interior from the aft lazarette.

The structural bulkheads are fully bonded into the hull stringers & frames.

Deck Structure

The deck is vacuum infused FRP using composite fibres and vinyl-ester resin with a structural foam core. This provides high levels of rigidity and insulation. 

The deck structure is single-skin FRP around the base of all deck fittings.

The outside finish of the deck is panelled non-slip gelcoat with Flexiteek side decks and cockpit sole as standard. 

Integral Kraken moulded safety bulwark

All Kraken have an Integral moulded safety bulwark with concave internal surface for superior deck safety at sea.

Saloon/coach roof windows

Ultra-high impact-resistant laminated glass is used in the wrap-around saloon windows and port lights so that accidental damage will not result in water ingress to the interior.

Hull Finishes

Standard hull gelcoat colour is Signal White. Many colour options available at owners choice. 

Double line boot top in Alwgrip to owners colour choice.

3 x coats of primer and sealer applied below the waterline before standard antifoul in dark grey, other colour choices available.
