The deckhand’s duties usually consist of general maintenance such as polishing stainless, wash downs, scrubbing decks and assisting with paint and varnish projects. They may also be assisting with hands-on jobs in other departments when required. The deckhand will also assist with anchoring and mooring procedures such as line handling and running fenders. During owner’s trips and charters, deckies help set up the deck in the mornings and clear it by the end of a long day. Deckhands will also launch and retrieve water toys as well doing tender runs ashore. During passages the deckhand will often assist with navigation watches. It is essential that deck crew is very meticulous and careful in anything they do on deck. Attention to detail and an ability to work hard and long hours are required. The same goes for good work ethics, a positive attitude, being a team player and a willingness to take direction and orders from superiors. Last but not least a good hygiene and a professional appearance is expected at all times.

While it is beneficial to have some prior experience it is not essential on most yachts. You will learn as you go along. Yet, some certification is still needed.

Chief Engineer / Sole Engineer

Engineers on deck – Photo Credit: Captain Mark O’Connell – check out Mark’s amazing yachting photo portfolio at www.markoconnell.photodeck.com

The Jack-of-All-Trades, the Chief Engineer needs to have a very broad knowledge way beyond diesel engines and general mechanics. He must ensure the engineering department is efficiently and safely operated at all times. This includes all technical equipment on board such as main engines, generators, shore power, hydraulics, air-conditioning, refrigeration, stabilizers, propulsion, sewage and davit systems. He will also be expected to fix tender outboards, jet skis, wave runners, washing machines, dryers and hairdryers for that sake… As if that is not enough, where there is no ETO / AV IT Officer on board, the engineer should also have a good knowledge of electronics and navigational equipment and be able to administrate the yacht’s internet. He is also responsible for the majority of service and repair work, liaising with subcontractors and shore based Engineers ensuring all relevant operations are up and running, and up to standard.

Licensed Chief Engineers are high in demand and are often offered attractive employment packages including private cabin, rotations and a salary that sometimes rivals that of the captain. Engineers are usually employed on yachts in the 30m / 100’ range and up.

  • Chief Engineer (SV) – less than 500GT and 3,000kW

Further info:  In the Facebook group Yacht Stewardess and Steward Tips you may have any further questions answered by experienced interior crew. It is an excellent group, which will help increase your knowledge about everything ‘’interior’’ on yachts!

Depending on the size of the yacht, interior crew positions may be divided into specialized functions such as

  • service steward/ess,
  • housekeeping steward/ess
  • laundry steward/ess.

On the majority of yachts, however, the interior team shares the daily tasks under the supervision of the Chief Steward/ess (or Purser) and may be referred to as hostess, 2 nd Steward/ess, 3 rd Steward/ess or simply Junior Steward/ess.

The yacht steward/ess’ function on board is to make the guests feel pampered and cared for at all times and to provide a superior level of service (think of the standards the Queen of England requires). You will be serving VIPs and some of the wealthiest people in the world in a setting where a 7-star service is always expected. Obviously, working 14-hour days (or more) this is not for everyone, but a with smile on your lips, a can-do attitude and a friendly accommodating personality, you will find that most guests will be a lot easier to please. A good knowledgeable Chief Steward/ess will help ease your entry into the industry by providing you with heaps of directions and advice, so it is just up to you pursue this unique opportunity and learn as much as possible!

Typical stewardess duties include (but are not limited to);

  • housekeeping
  • laundry / ironing
  • setting tables
  • serving drinks and meals
  • Assisting with inventories, provisioning, updating of checklists etc.

Note: job duties can vary from yacht to yacht

Surely, the job can be demanding, but you do earn good money, get to see the world and meet some really cool people on your way, so it is not all that bad, after all J

The Chef position is regarded by many as being the most demanding job on a yacht. On some yachts you will be running the galley having to cook for millionaires and billionaires, who with very few exceptions expect Michelin standards both in terms of taste and creative presentation. During a typical day on charter, guests will require breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, hors d’ouevres, canapés, dinner, snacks – and then there is the crew, which will need at least lunch and dinner. As if that is not enough, some might be vegan, be allergic or simply just picky about what they eat. By the end of a long day, you will need to clean your galley to superyacht standards after having prepared for the following day, when the show starts over once again. Add to all that, King Neptune is not always in a favourable mood, why you must be able to cook in all sea conditions.

For this reason, it is a must to be exceptionally organized, creative, hardworking and a good team player with a positive attitude. You must be able to remain cool under pressure – there is no room for drama queens… Remember you live, work and play together with the rest of the crew! Solid restaurant or hotel experience will definitely be helpful but not always required. Where crew agencies try to help experienced chefs find work, less experienced chefs are more likely to find jobs through dockwalking, networking or applying directly to captains’ job posts on Facebook etc.

On a yacht, you find various chef roles. These will depend on the size of the vessel and the owner’s requirements. You will need to decide if you want to run your own galley and cook for crew and guests by yourself or if you want to work as a chef being part of a bigger team. Typical chef positions are

The Head Chef manages at least one other chef (sous chef and/or crew chef). You are required to have an extensive cooking knowledge with previous restaurant experience, preferably to Michelin star standards. You will have an extensive knowledge of produce, nutrition, diets, allergies, food safety and storage. The head chef manages menu planning, provisioning, accounting, inventory, cooking as well as he/she is responsible for keeping the galley in a pristine condition.

The sole chef may have restaurant experience or even come from a yachting background from where he/she moves onto the chef position. You will be managing menu planning, provisioning, shopping, galley cleaning, accounting and inventory as well as cooking for both crew and guests. On some smaller yachts  (<30 meters / 90’) this position may be combined with an interior role, e.g. cook/stew

The sous chef / crew chef position is a great way to get started with a career cooking on yachts. Whereas it will be expected from the sous chef, no formal education is required for the crew chef. With that said, you must have a passion for cooking and being willing to add to that with further education. A sous chef/crew chef plans crew menus, prepares crew meals, assists the head chef with provisioning and guest meals as well as with galley cleaning. On some yachts the position may be combined with assisting the interior or the exterior department when needed.

*Ship’s Cook Certificate is a mandatory requirement for all chefs working on UK-registered commercial (charter) vessels with more than 10 crew operating 60 miles+ offshore OR if the vessel is under a different flag state which follows similar regulations. It is not required, however, if one or more chefs on board already has the certificate. You will then be able to work as an “Assistant Cook”, as defined by the MCA.

More great advice by Justine Murphy, of   muymuybueno chefs ;

1. What’s the first move a chef should make when they’re considering yachting?

Ideally talking to someone in the industry first. There are so many great yacht chef Facebook groups, posting there for insight and advice or searching on previous discussions is beneficial, in real-time from chefs who are working on yachts. They can offer really helpful and supportive advice. It is a very special community, and everyone wants to help.

Getting everything together is the first point of call, booking in for your STCW2010 – accounting for the cost of the course and accommodation is something to consider and save for, taking your ENG1 medical just before you wish to start looking for work as this has an expiry of 2 years and the clock starts from when you have it done.

Once you start to register with agencies, you should have everything else ready to hand and can work through seamlessly filling out and uploading all to your profile. This includes your best plated food photos to showcase your work, menu plans, documents and references. Taking the time to fill out all areas correctly and doing so carefully and well. A good headshot of you in a chef jacket on your CV, and ensure it is spellchecked too.

2. What do chefs need to understand about yachting?

It’s hard work. Long hours and you need to prepare for the unexpected at every turn. Massively good organisation skills, time management, and communication is key. Coming from a restaurant where you have been part of a large brigade to ultimately doing everything yourself, is a big jump for some to transition with.

Especially as a sole chef, many coming from restaurants often find it easier to join as crew or sous on a larger vessel if they have always been in that dynamic and thrive from it, plus the head chefs on these sizes are more likely to give a chef from restaurants their first yacht role, as they will reap from having their recent experience on board, any new techniques and more.

Others relish the challenge as a sole chef and the chance to deliver with their own guest food, so will take it on and have to learn and adapt along the way. Either path will take you to head chef, if you are in it for a career move and willing to invest into the next few years ahead.

3. What kind of prior experience is best?

There are two types of yacht chefs.

Those with culinary training such as attending catering college accreditation and these chefs have then gone on to work in good restaurants, some Rosette or Michelin Star establishments, and enhanced their repertoire and really honed their craft and developed their own style.

The other, are cooks who get into the industry from a sheer love of cooking, and are really good cooks, who then develop further over the years ahead through short or longer term courses to continue learning, developing their skills and become incredible chefs. Some may then work to gain culinary qualifications further down the line too. Much like the route I took myself. Being self-taught is nothing to be frowned upon, plenty of amazing chefs in the world are and the same can be said within the superyacht industry too. For some vessels, especially much larger ones, it is essential to hold an NVQ or the equivalent, an important part of the required paperwork to be able to sign onto the vessel with. What matters more than anything is a good attitude, passion and love for what you do, and the rest will all come and is part of your journey ahead.

4. What yacht training should they take, chef specific or not? Do you usually recommend the Ship’s Cook Certificate?

For anyone brand new into yachting, they require sea time in order to have their Ships’ Cook Certificate, once they have this then it is very useful to acquire to ensure they are not missing out on good roles which may require it, especially if wishing to work on larger yachts, and also if you are not a culinary trained chef, having this in hand is the next best thing to validate that you can deliver just as well as a culinary trained chef.

5. What qualities do hiring managers look for in superyacht chefs?

Coming to the table with the right attitude to start with. Being humble is also a redeeming quality. Just because you may have been a head chef on land, doesn’t translate the same way on yachts, you still need to get your foot in the door and then commit to that first role. Longevity in previous roles. If you have proven loyalty with previous employers on land and excellent references, this will strengthen your profile and reflect well for any vessel providing that first all-important first yacht role.

6. Best tips to find that first job?

Registering with good reputable agencies for certain, mymuybueno Private Chefs of course would be a great place to start, as we specialise in chef placement and we are MCA accredited, MLC certified. That provides a good starting block and then the rest is down to you. Networking, being proactive, staying positive are all the attributes that will help. Regularly checking in with the agencies you register with, and building a relationship with them, individually, so they can each get to know you, and help find the right first role.

7. The importance of your food photos and menus?

Really putting the time, thought and love into your menu plans for both guests and crew, as well as your best plated food photos, matters. It is what makes you and your skills, background and techniques stand out, and will set you apart from other chefs. Think about the Med and Caribbean seasons, the temperature, the produce, and allow your menus to reflect those ingredients, seasonality, and more. No one wants to eat a lamb shank for dinner on anchor, in the middle of 35 degree heat in the midst of summer, in the Mediterranean. That thinking ahead, and those thoughts and details make all the difference, as well as the care and love that will go into your crew menu too. Remember it’s the Captain reading what he will be eating, so make sure you make sure it’s well balanced with plenty of variation. Good clear photos that best present you, I always ask for a starter, mains and dessert, as this can show your skill across them all. If you excel in pastry, pick a dish that really displays that. Dishes that best represent you, your skill set and what you are good at.”

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Lucas Urruty Officer of the Watch (OOW) "I started yachting 7 years ago, from not knowing the industry at all to getting my first OOW position last year. I remember in the first stages of my training I had nobody to guide me on how or in what order or priority to do my modules. I followed the yacht route, and up until now I have always gone back to Yotspot in my career to see what requirements, sea time and courses I need and in what order as a reference. I have booked at least 4 of my modules through Yotspot and even got my current job thanks to the site. It has changed the game in our industry regarding crew, training and so much more, highly recommend! "
Liubov Chunikhovska Ex Chief Stewardess (MY Luna, 100m) "If you're looking for a job or recruiting crew I personally think that Yotspot is the best service in the industry. It basically has everything you need in one place. Yotspot has been crucial to work with professionals and provides a high-level of support. Thank you Yotspot Team and wishing you inspiration to keep going with new ideas along with success!"

I have chosen to look on this platform because it offers full spectrum of options that you want to include in your search such as temporary or rotational position. I haven't seen it on any other yacht job search site and I always found it super useful to specify your search like that and look for the best option for me. Yotspot is a time saver. I have found my current job on it and I am very grateful for that. I will definitely recommend it to any yachtie to create a profile and search for his or her dream job on Yotspot as it's definitely somewhere there!"

There appears to be an increasing number of crew who are using it today. The site can be accessed 24hrs a day 7 days a week. The more it's used the more cost effective it becomes. Most traditional Crew Recruitment companies have no such concessions. Yotspot is our first stop when recruiting"

The fact that candidates are ranked from most suitable to the role, to least makes it easier to sort the square pegs for the round holes! Each job receives an excellent response rate with often more than one ideal candidate to deliberate over. Over the last three years, we have recruited over 25 crew from Yotspot, all of which have been wonderful additions to the crew. I would certainly recommend anyone needing to hire crew to use the Yotspot service as the value for money is second to none. I can post with confidence everytime. "

Not only is it incredibly cost effective, the simplicity of posting a position and looking for crew is amazing. NZ replacing part of yacht's hull after it was dropped by crane on first day of America's Cup

spain yacht jobs

Barcelona, Spain — Emirates Team New Zealand worked on Friday to replace a piece of the hull of its yacht that was damaged in a crane incident after its first warmup race at the America’s Cup .

The mishap happened late on Thursday when the 75-foot yacht named “Taihoro” was being removed from the water after racing.

Team leader Grant Dalton said the multimillion-dollar boat fell some six meters (20 feet) onto the support cradle at their team base inside Barcelona’s old port. Dalton said the impact sounded “like a bomb went off.” The boat was eventually lifted to get the tips of its critically important hydrofoils off the concrete ground.

On Thursday, Dalton believed the repair job could keep his defending champion team sidelined throughout the double round-robin phase that lasts through next week.

But less than 24 hours later, Dalton said enough work was done overnight to give him hope they could be back on the water sooner than he expected.

“It’s possible that we could be back out by tomorrow,” the CEO of the team and race said.

“We're pretty lucky. If it had fallen 200 millimeters to either side it could have been a whole bunch worse, but it fell into the cradle, perfectly into the cradle,” he said. “The guys have literally cut out a hole, it looks like the Titanic.”

Missing any racing time is a setback, but it should be manageable as long as the boat can be refitted in the coming days or even weeks since as defending champions the Kiwis are guaranteed a spot in the finals in October.

The incident means New Zealand didn't participate in the two warmup races it was scheduled for on Friday. That won’t impact the standings since its races don’t count; they are essentially only for practice to keep the team sharp for the final.

One of those races was against INEOS Britannia, which according to the rules had to start the race even though its rival couldn't.

“We were obviously very worried that someone had gotten hurt initially, so we are very happy that everyone was safe,” INEOS helmsman Dylan Fletcher told The Associated Press about how he saw the Kiwis' crane incident.

“You don’t really wish anyone to have bad luck or anything like that to go wrong because you just want to beat them because you're better.”

American Magic got its first point and handed Switzerland's Alinghi Red Bull Racing a second straight defeat after a race where both teams struggled to find wind and spent long periods of time becalmed. The race control shortened the race from six to four legs to keep it from dragging on. It still lasted 31 minutes.

“It wasn’t pretty at all. It’s just tough conditions,” American Magic helmsman Tom Slingsby said. “I would have loved to foil across the line, but we just did what we had to do to get the win.”

The light winds forced the postponement of the Americans' scheduled race against Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli later Friday.

One of the five challengers will be eliminated after the opening phase before the final four go to semifinals.

History of Novosibirsk

Foundation of novosibirsk.

Novosibirsk is a city with a very interesting history. Unlike many other cities in Russia, it does not have a specific founder. Since the 18th century, on the left bank of the Ob, one of the largest rivers in the world, there was the village of Krivoshchekovo, where migrants from the European provinces of the Russian Empire lived. However, it did not become the basis of Novosibirsk. The city was born on the other, right, bank of the Ob, when the Trans-Siberian Railway approached it in 1893.

Originally it was just a village for the builders of a railway bridge across the Ob. It could turn out to be temporary and disappear after the completion of construction, if not for the combination of several factors that contributed to the development of trade - a large river, a railway, a flat relief convenient for building. At first, the village was named Alexandrovsky, in honor of Emperor Alexander III. For the third anniversary, it received a new name and became Novonikolaevsky, in honor of the Emperor Nicholas II.

In 1897, the first trains went across the bridge. The settlement was quickly growing. By 1898, there were already 7.8 thousand people in the village. In 1903, when the village acquired the status of a town with the name Novonikolaevsk, its population was 26 thousand people. In the 1910s, Novonikolaevsk experienced a construction boom. By 1913, the population of the city was 86 thousand people.

Novonikolaevsk, was the center of the major lines of communication, in which the navigable Ob River crossed with the Great Siberian Way and the Altai Railway. The First World War turned the city into the largest center for training troops beyond the Urals.

More Historical Facts…

Novosibirsk - the Siberian Chicago

In 1921, Novonikolaevsk received the status of the administrative center of the Novonikolaevsk Governorate. In 1925, it became the administrative center of the huge Siberian Krai - practically all the regions of Trans-Ural Russia.

The capital of the new huge region needed a new name. Here are just some of the proposed names: Krasnograd, Sibleninsk, Krasnoobsk, Sibkraisk, Sibkraigrad, Leningrad-on-Ob. On February 12, 1926, Novonikolaevsk (“a new city of Nicholas”) was renamed Novosibirsk (“a new city in Siberia”. In 1926, at the Regional Scientific Congress, it was decided to turn Novosibirsk into a “promsad” (“industrial garden”) or “city-garden”. About 120 thousand people lived in the city at that time. The city got the nickname “Siberian Chicago”.

The main elements of the renovated Siberian capital were supposed to be “social towns” - complex residential areas at factories and plants. New cadres were needed to build a new society. Novosibirsk quickly became a city of students. In the 1930s, 8 universities and 10 technical schools were opened here. The city became the Trans-Ural capital of such an architectural style as constructivism.

On July 30, 1930, due to the division of the Siberian Krai, Novosibirsk became the center of the West Siberian Krai. In 1934, a new railway bridge was built across the Ob River and the population grew to 294 thousand people. By 1939, it increased up to 406 thousand people. On September 28, 1937, the West Siberian Krai was divided into Novosibirsk Oblast with the capital in Novosibirsk and Altai Krai.

During the Second World War, the enlistment offices of Novosibirsk Oblast sent more than half a million soldiers to the front. There were 115 evacuation hospitals in the region. Almost 27% of all shells fired by the Red Army during the war were produced in Novosibirsk. Despite the fact that not a single bomb fell on the territory of Novosibirsk, the pre-war city disappeared forever. Instead of the planned residential areas/parks, industrial zones of evacuated factories appeared, a lot of buildings changed their civilian purpose to military-industrial (some of them - forever).

The evacuation radically changed the demography of Novosibirsk - people evacuated from Moscow and Leningrad brought with them a new way of life, new artistic tastes. A lot of them stayed in Novosibirsk after the war. During the war years, Novosibirsk also became the center of the musical culture of Siberia. The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater, one of the main attractions of Novosibirsk, was opened on May 12, 1945.

Novosibirsk after the Second World War

The demographic inertia of the evacuation turned the pre-war Novosibirsk into a metropolis. By 1956, its population increased to 750 thousand people. On September 2, 1962, a millionth resident of the city was born. It took Novosibirsk only 70 years to achieve this status from the moment of its foundation, which made it the youngest of all million cities.

In 1950, the construction of the Novosibirsk hydroelectric power station began; a large reservoir was created, the so-called Ob Sea. The idea of creating a Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk was implemented in 1957. About 20 kilometers south of the center of Novosibirsk, in the middle of the forest, Akademgorodok was built - a town of scientists. In 1959, Novosibirsk State University was opened.

In 1979, construction of the metro began in Novosibirsk. Opened in 1985, it became the first one in the Trans-Ural part of Russia. Today, the Novosibirsk metro has 13 stations and annually carries about 70 million passengers.

In 1990, the bridge that had given rise to the city was reconstructed. To preserve the memory of the first builders, one of its span structures was installed on the embankment of the Ob in the park “Gorodskoye Nachalo”.

The transition to a market economy led to a sharp drop in production. High-tech industries, such as radioelectronics, microelectronics, instrument making, and aircraft construction suffered especially heavy losses. In 1991-1998, industrial production in Novosibirsk decreased by more than 3 times.

In the 1990s, the economic structure of the Novosibirsk region and Novosibirsk underwent fundamental changes. The main structural change was that the production of services in the city began to exceed the production of goods, the role of industry decreased, the share of transport, trade, communications, agriculture, and a lot of branches of market services increased.

Thus, the potential points of growth of Novosibirsk reproduced on a new historical, technological, and institutional basis the initial system of its development priorities: a large transport hub in the system of transnational transport corridors, a trade, intermediary, and financial center - the center of Siberia, a large business, scientific, educational, and cultural center.

In the 21st century, Novosibirsk became the first Russian city (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) to exceed the population of 1.5 million.

Novosibirsk - Features

Novosibirsk is the most populous city in the Asian part of Russia. It is located in the southeastern part of the West Siberian Plain on both banks of the Ob River next to the Novosibirsk reservoir. The width of the Ob River within the city is 750-850 meters. The City Day of Novosibirsk is celebrated on the last Sunday of June.

The city is located in the continental climatic zone. The flatness of the territory allows both cold waves from the north and heat waves from the southwest to freely spread. That’s why both severe frosts and short-term thaws can be observed in winter. The duration of winter is 120-130 days, summer - about 90 days. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.5 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.4 degrees Celsius.

On the coat of arms of Novosibirsk you can see a schematic image of the Ob River and the bridge across it, part of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which gave rise to the city.

The economy of Novosibirsk is based on industry, trade, transport, science, and scientific services. The city is successfully developing in the absence of large resource-extracting enterprises in the region, which distinguishes it from most large cities in Siberia.

The main activities of industrial production are: production of food, computers, electronic and optical products, chemicals, vehicles and equipment, metallurgy, beverage production. Novosibirsk is one of the leading suppliers of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants and research reactors in Russia and abroad.

Novosibirsk is the largest scientific center in the Asian part of Russia. More than 100 organizations carry out research and development in this city. There are about three dozen higher educational institutions here.

It is the largest transport hub in Siberia connecting Siberia, the Far East, Central Asia with the European regions of Russia. Novosibirsk is also a river port. The city is served by Tolmachevo International Airport, the largest in terms of passenger traffic in the Asian part of Russia. The airport is located at the intersection of a large number of flights from Southeast Asia to Europe and from North America to India and Asia.

Novosibirsk was the only city in Russia located in two time zones. Since its foundation, it was growing in two parts along different banks of the Ob. And since the meridian of the hour passed right along the Ob River, there were two time zones in one city. On the left bank, the difference with Moscow was 3 hours, and on the right bank - 4 hours. At first, this did not cause much inconvenience as each half lived quite apart. In 1955, when the first road bridge across the Ob was built, the city became more connected. In 1958, Novosibirsk switched to a single time zone.

Despite its young age, Novosibirsk has 145 monuments of architecture, history, monumental art and archeology taken under state protection. 47 monuments of wooden architecture of the late 19th - early 20th centuries are of particular value. There are also over a dozen different museums in Novosibirsk.

Main Attractions of Novosibirsk

The total length of the exhibition grounds is about 3 kilometers. It is the largest museum of this subject beyond the Urals with over 100 exhibits. Razyezdnaya Street, 54/1.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (1897-1899). Built of red brick in the neo-Byzantine style, this is one of the first stone buildings on the territory of Novosibirsk and the most beautiful church in the city. Krasnyy Prospekt, 1A.

Monument to the Laboratory Mouse . This unusual monument is located in a public garden near the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the territory of Akademgorodok. The mouse with glasses holds the knitting needles in its paws and knits a double helix of DNA.

The monument symbolizes gratitude to this animal for the fact that mankind has the opportunity to use mice to study animal genes, molecular and physical mechanisms of diseases, and the development of new drugs. Akademika Lavrent’yeva Prospekt, 10/2.

Zaeltsovsky Park - one of the oldest parks in Novosibirsk that celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2017. The park has all the conditions for a comfortable and cultural pastime: walking paved paths, rides, summer verandas and gazebos, a paintball club, an ice rink, a rope park, etc.

For history buffs, the ethnopark “Territory of Siberia” has been created, where everyone can get acquainted in detail with the culture of the indigenous peoples who lived in these places several hundred years ago. In winter, it is a great place to go skiing. There is also a children’s railway with a length of 5.3 km here. At the terminal station, you will be offered to go to the Novosibirsk Zoo, which is located nearby.

Novosibirsk Central Park - a large park in the center of Novosibirsk and the oldest park in the city. On an area of 10.5 hectares, there are summer cafes and ice cream kiosks, dozens of rides and sports equipment rental points. There is an open-air skating rink in winter. The park often hosts festivals, concerts, and tournaments. The Novosibirsk Theater of Musical Comedy is also located here. Michurina Street, 8.

The Ob River and “the Ob Sea” . The Ob is one of the world’s largest rivers, its length is more than 3,600 km. This river flows through a lot of Siberian cities. Within Novosibirsk, the river is transformed into a large reservoir, which bears the unofficial name “the Ob Sea”. The main purpose of the water reservoir is to generate electricity. Also, the shores of the “sea” are a popular recreation area for locals and city visitors.
