Riva 130 Bellissima Superyacht

Riva ’s new fleet member proves that big and beautiful are not mutually exclusive.

The elegant superyacht, which left the Italian builder’s La Spezia yard on Thursday, spans an imposing 130 feet and is the largest model in Riva’s flybridge range. Fittingly, it’s also the new flagship of the series.

Named after the Italian word for “very beautiful,” the Bellissima is a looker, too, showcasing expert craftsmanship, the latest technology and high design. The model was penned by Mauro Micheli of Officina Italiana Design. The Italian firm, which Micheli founded with Sergio Beratta in the late ‘90s, has designed all of Riva’s yachts for the past 27 years. The Ferretti Group (Riva’s parent company) also had a hand in the design, of course.

The Bellissima is characterized by a sleek planing hull and three simple lines that run from tip to tail. Similar to a sports car, the yacht features air intake grills, carbon fiber detailing and a dynamic hard top. It also sports extensive glazed surfaces that ensure the interiors get plenty of natural light.

With a wide body and a beam of roughly 26 feet, the Bellissima affords a generous amount of space onboard. In fact, Riva says it’s the first yacht in the range to have three “real decks” while also remaining under 300 GT. At the heart of the vessel, the main saloon offers sweeping 270-degree views, ceilings of over six feet and handsome rosewood accents. The lavish owner’s suite is located on the main deck, while four guest cabins with en suites sit on the lower deck.

Outside, the flagship’s redesigned stern area is lower and closer to the water. Spanning 645 square feet, it houses a large beach club and a cockpit. On the upper deck, meanwhile, there’s a dining area for 10 and two private balconies. Above this, the sundeck is the perfect place for cocktails. Elsewhere, there is a lounge and sun pad in the bow, along with a garage in the port-side hull for a Jet Ski, tender and seabob.

At 130 feet, Bellissima is the largest model in Riva’s flybridge range.  Riva

As for grunt, the Bellissima is powered by twin MTU engines that give her an estimated top speed of 22.5 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots.

“When you see a Riva cruising on the water, a Riva Bellissima, everything stops and you can pause the world to enjoy a tailor-made miracle, an aesthetic experience that words can’t describe,” Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi said in a statement .

Following sea trials, the Italian beauty will be delivered to her American owner.

January 30 2023

Riva 130' Bellissima: the “Riva fleet flagship” enters the water for the second time.

Built in the new Riva shipyard in La Spezia, the second hull of the largest flybridge in the range has a European owner.     La Spezia, January 30, 2023 – Born out of skilled hand craftsmanship, avant-garde design and advanced marine technology, Riva 130’ Bellissima is a magnificent flybridge yacht with an overall length of 40 meters, and the perfect blend of power and elegance: a work of art that is “Bellissima” in both name and fact.   The second unit built of Riva’s flagship model was launched on behalf of a European owner last Friday in La Spezia , in the shipyard dedicated to the production of Riva yachts from 70 to 130 feet. After recently undergoing major expansion and architectural restyling work, the La Spezia yard now extends over a total surface area of more than 39,000 square meters , of which 17,000 under cover. The facility also includes three buildings containing eighteen assembly stations, plus six equipped for testing. The production site also has a 300-tonne travel lift and two of the largest advanced technology painting systems in Europe. The launch also saw the official opening of the new wing of the facility reserved for owner hospitality . Representing a further optimization of the services offered to guests, it joins 26 yacht berths , with two docks under cover, ensuring optimal conditions for work and delivery to owners in any season.   Riva 130’ Bellissima has exterior styling and interiors by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta , founders of Officina Italiana Design , the design firm behind all Riva’s yachts for the last 27 years, working in partnership with the P roduct Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari , and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department .    With an overall length of over 40 meters and a beam of 8 meters, Riva 130’ Bellissima is the first planing flybridge in the range to extend across three real decks, with a full-wide-body design and generous volumes in every setting, while remaining under 300 GT and maintaining sleek, elegant lines.   “The name Bellissima perfectly expresses the spirit of this boat, a true work of art that has been a huge success on all four continents,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. “With her sporty but at the same time extremely elegant lines, Riva 130’ Bellissima is the dream yacht of every owner in search of outstanding cruising performance combined with the feeling of being at home.”   “Riva 130’ Bellissima is designed to be superlative and on entering the water becomes even more beautiful, powerful and poetic, like the boats that have written the brand’s history,” continues Alberto Galassi. “The success this model is reporting is a credit to Riva's commitment to always designing boats that navigate both in legend and in the future.”   Carbon fiber, steel and glass are the distinctive elements of the hull design, which features three simple lines running along the silhouette : two black strokes along the yacht’s silvery side define the hull windows, while the windshield, made with spherical crystals, has the characteristic slight forward rake already used on the Riva 48’ Dolceriva. Aft, the all-glass fashion plates enhance the aerodynamics and elegance of the yacht, while the carbon fiber detailing and the hardtop with its quintessentially sporty style add dynamism and personality.   The outdoor areas are optimized to fully experience close contact with the water: the stern area, set low and open to the water, is divided into a large beach club and a cockpit of over 60 square metres. Forward, guests can choose between a lounge, a large sun pad and other intimate and inviting spaces. The exterior spaces are rounded out by an alfresco dining area, accommodating up to ten people on the upper deck, and a relaxation area on the sundeck.   Inside, Riva 130’ Bellissima offers spacious, light-filled settings, thanks to the large glazed surfaces extending along the full length of the main and upper decks. The interior design is contemporary, pointed up by elements made from steel, polished wood and leather, and achieves the perfect balance between celebrating tradition and reaching into the future. The star feature of Riva 130’ is the large lounge on the main deck: with a 270-degree panoramic view and a height of over 2 meters , this one-of-a-kind space features an imposing staircase with polished marble steps that not only connects the decks, but is also a magnificent architectural element. The cabin layout puts the master suite on the main deck and four cabins on the lower deck , separated by a large lobby and all with en suite bathrooms. The crew area, made up of three cabins with bathrooms and a large living area, is forward, with reserved entrances and walkways to ensure the utmost privacy and tranquility for both the owner and guests.   Riva 130’ Bellissima is powered by twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines rated 2,638 mhp each, giving her a top speed of 22,5 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots.

Bellissima Yacht | 128' Baglietto 2003

Bellissima is part of a remarkable high-performance line of Baglietto Fast Fly super yachts.  This exotic 38.8m (128ft) planing yacht was methodically designed by Francesco Paszkowski and William Dailey.  She was constructed entirely of aluminum in La Spezia, Italy embodying the sea with a royal blue hull and metallic silver superstructure.  Bellissima is powered by twin turbo MTU 4000 V12 main engines to push an exhilarating, yet astonishingly smooth 26 knot cruising speed and 30 knot top speed.  She can comfortably travel non-stop from San Diego, CA to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in 1.5 days.

Her elegant interior has accommodations for up to 10 guests comfortably in five ensuite staterooms and can carry up to six crew in three cabins forward.  The one and only owner has adored her for the last 20 years since being commissioned.  She has been blessed with extensive annual shipyard periods under the close watch of the current Captain who has been behind the helm for the last eight years.

As you enter the salon, dual sliding glass doors immerse you into a timeless taste of Italy felt throughout a voluminous interior. The flush deck salon flows effortlessly forward incorporating a full wet bar, card table, and formal dining arrangement.  The beautiful furnishings and large windows invite you to indulge yourself on the main deck and take pleasure in a luxurious yachting experience.

On the aft deck, she has an al fresco dining space and convenient access to the beach club.  There are two grand staircases forward that lead you to the flybridge.  One of Bellissima's most appealing entertainment spaces is her sundeck.  The sundeck offers an array of circular settees, a wet bar central with an integrated retractable awning and customized JL audio system.

At the stern, state of the art, multi-color underwater lights set the mood and compliment a transom that converts to a fully functional beach club with stowage for all your toys, dive equipment and easy boarding access to the tender.

Bellissima is a Marshall Islands Flag vessel and built according to ABS A1 Yachting Service Classification, AMS Unrestricted Navigation.

I Cruised the Croatian Coast on a Ship With Just 38 Passengers — Here’s What It Was Like

The small, ultra-luxe 'MV Memories' was the best introduction to Croatia.

Cruise Itineraries

Shore excursions, family-friendly offerings.

Floating in the clear Adriatic near an uninhabited island off Croatia’s coast, I marveled as the sea changed hues from deep blue to turquoise and emerald as it reached the rocky shore. Our daily swimming stops quickly became my favorite part of the cruise, although I also loved arriving at different cities where we could just walk into the town or along the promenade that seemed to be a feature of each harbor. My contemplation of the Adriatic’s color was interrupted by laughter as one of my fellow cruisers gamely struggled once again to stand on his paddleboard, wobbled, and splashed into the sea.

Every morning aboard MV Memories , the captain found a secluded cove for the perfect swim; the Adriatic was cool enough to refresh without feeling chilly for more than the first few seconds. This delightful routine led to our three-course lunch, afternoon cruise time, and arrival at the next port. In some cities, there was a walking tour before we had the late afternoon and evening on our own for exploring and dinner.

Patricia Doherty/Travel + Leisure

Thirty-eight strangers quickly became friends as we mingled at breakfast and lunch tables, learning our fellow travelers’ names and where they were from. We were blessed with sunny, warm weather every day, so afternoons could be spent sunbathing on the upper deck, reading a book, napping on a cushioned lounge, or enjoying a cold gin and tonic in the shade (my choice most days). Arriving at a new city each day was exciting, as medieval towers, ancient city walls, and historic buildings greeted us. Walking tours provided background and an introduction to most of the cities, and then we were on our own for dinner and the evening. How cool it was to stay out late and then just walk back to the waiting ship for the night.

MV Memories instantly became a comfortable and welcoming home-away-from-home for the week, whether in our well-appointed cabin, on the sun deck, or relaxing in a shaded lounge chair. "The vessels we operate were built in 2021, and we’re proud to have the youngest fleet of ships in Croatia. This really enhances the cruising experience for guests as the staterooms they rest their heads in, the dining areas they eat in, and the expansive lounge and sundeck areas around the ship all feel new and modern, like a luxury boutique hotel," Graham Carter, chief commercial officer at Unforgettable Travel Company, told Travel + Leisure.

"Unforgettable specializes in balcony ships, and most of our vessels have upper deck cabins with private balconies, so our guests can relax and watch the islands go by from the comfort of their balcony," Carter added. "We also operate the longest vessels in Croatia, which stand at 170 feet, compared to most vessels in Croatia, which are around 150 feet. This additional space means our cabins are slightly larger than most.”

Dreamer4787/Getty Images/Courtesy of Unforgettable Travel Company

Carter pointed out another advantage of the ship’s size: "The benefit of exploring the Croatian coast on a small vessel like ours is the ability to get into smaller hidden destinations off limits to bigger ships or even yachts. As our vessels are all registered in Croatia, we can dock directly in smaller ports overnight, giving our guests the ability to enjoy excursions and dinner on shore each evening without the rush of having to get back to the ship before it leaves."

Every detail during the week felt both luxurious and comfortably casual at the same time. Each day offered surprises — like an unexpected pizza party one late afternoon — along with what quickly became familiar. Alex and Vlada, our hosts, made everyone feel welcome and pampered, and, like the other guests, felt like old friends by the end of the cruise — which came way too soon. I wholeheartedly agree with Carter’s comment: “We find that guests board as complete strangers, and by the captain’s dinner at the end of the week, it’s like a happy family where everyone knows one another, and they’re swapping phone numbers on the last day.”

Here are more details about our seven-night cruise along the coast of Croatia aboard MV Memories .

MV Memories

  • All 19 cabins feature spacious storage, terry cloth robes, showers with great water pressure, convenient charging ports, individual air conditioning controls, and either balconies (11 upper deck) or portholes (eight lower deck).
  • For our daily dips in the Adriatic, the main deck platform with two ladders made it easy to dive in and climb out. There were also paddleboards, styrofoam floats, kayaks, and a jet ski for a fun ride with one of the crew.
  • The breakfast buffet included fresh fruit, juices, baked goods, eggs, vegetables, meats, pancakes, and a menu offering individually prepared dishes, plus brewed coffee and delicious cappuccino from an excellent (all-day) coffee machine.
  • The two hosts who served breakfast, lunch, and our special dinners, as well as all day and evening cocktails, were excellent, and their hospitality and friendly, professional style created the perfect atmosphere.
  • Our Cruise Director was personable, organized, and fun, keeping everyone informed about plans and joining our group for the walking tours and bus trips.

The 19 staterooms each measure between 161 and 183 square feet of efficiently used space. They have a desk, nightstand with two drawers, twin or full beds, spacious closet, small sofa, safe deposit box, life jackets, and a window (or porthole on the lower deck). The bathrooms have a shower, sink, hair dryer, and toilet, and each cabin has individually controlled air conditioning. Free, dependable Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship.

Nearly identical in design, the MV Bellissima and MV Memories , Unforgettable Travel’s Croatia Signature cruise ships, were launched in 2021. They feature state-of-the-art technology and modern design details. MV Memories offers one Superior VIP Deck Cabin and 10 VIP private balcony cabins. MV Bellissima features 11 VIP private balcony cabins; both ships have eight lower deck porthole cabins.

Bars & Restaurants

A buffet breakfast is served daily in the main dining room from 8 until 9:30 a.m.; coffee and tea are available from 7 a.m. There’s a daily three-course lunch with a delicious soup, salad, or risotto starter, main course, and dessert. Two dinners — the welcome dinner and captain’s dinner — are provided, and wine is offered along with meals. A full bar with a lounge area is on the main deck; on the sun deck, there’s a large bar in the shaded area. Dining is informal, with no dress code. Alex, our head bartender, hosted a wine and olive oil tasting aboard the ship one afternoon.

Amenities & Entertainment

During cruising — or anytime on the ship — guests can find lounge chairs, a jacuzzi, and shaded and sunny areas on the upper deck. The main deck features the restaurant and a covered outdoor lounge with sofas. The ships offer many places for sunbathing, quiet time, or gatherings. Board games, playing cards, and novelty games are available for guests.

From May to October, the ships cruise between Split and Dubrovnik with adults-only, seven-night cruises.

Several shore excursions took guests inland from the Adriatic coast to see more of Croatia. We traveled on plush, air-conditioned buses to Krka Waterfalls National Park, the Blue Cave on the Island of Bisevo, Mljet National Park, a winery, and an oyster farm in Ston. In addition, walking tours were offered in Split, Hvar, Old Town Korcula, and Dubrovnik. Tour guides were professional, informative, and entertaining.

The Signature Croatia Cruises are adults only; guests must be at least 18.

Unforgettable Travel Company offers seven-night cruises for $2,295 per person, including breakfast, lunch, private transfers, all excursions, and Wi-Fi. Flights are not included. For further information on 2025 departures, visit https://unforgettabletravel.com/ or call +1-844-879-7838.

Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko berths superyacht in UAE

Simeon Kerr in Ras al-Khaimah

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Investigators around the world have been searching for sanctions-hit Russian oligarchs’ yachts. One has been hiding in plain sight.

Italian authorities in March impounded Russian coal and fertilisers magnate Andrey Melnichenko’s $600mn Sailing Yacht A after Russia invaded Ukraine. Another yacht, the $300mn Philippe Starck-designed Motor Yacht A, has been anchored for weeks in the port of Ras al-Khaimah, in the United Arab Emirates.

By placing his yacht in the UAE, Melnichenko has put it beyond the reach of western governments enforcing sanctions on those deemed supportive of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Its presence is a symbolic reminder of the Gulf monarchy’s ambivalence towards western sanctions on Russia, allies of Putin and the wealthy businessmen who have often benefited from ties to the state.

While the UAE government is trying to enhance measures against money laundering to exit a global dirty-money watchdog’s watchlist, the economic foundation of cities such as Dubai has long been based on welcoming flows of assets and people.

“Given its non-enforcement of western sanctions, the dilemma for the UAE is how to sustain its place as an open destination for capital while also appearing to be a good global citizen,” said one compliance professional. “It’s a tricky balancing act.”

The government of the Isle of Man said it had in March deregistered Melnichenko’s yachts, including Motor Yacht A, because of western sanctions, saying, “we will continue to act with appropriate robustness should the situation warrant it”.

Marine locator services placed Motor Yacht A off the Maldives in March. The Financial Times then saw the yacht on April 18. On Saturday it remained moored opposite Ras al-Khaimah’s city-centre fish market.

Businessmen in the UAE say Melnichenko, who denies affiliations to the Kremlin, held meetings there in April, but the tycoon has since returned to Moscow. A representative of Melnichenko, who has been placed under sanctions by the EU and UK as well as Switzerland and Australia, referred questions on the yacht to a lawyer who declined to comment.

UAE authorities in Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah and Abu Dhabi declined to comment.

European officials say they have raised concerns with Emirati counterparts that the UAE could become a financial haven for Russians placed under western sanctions. “We don’t want our allies to become facilitators for the Putin regime,” said one.

Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko attends an event

The UAE government has said it is maintaining a neutral course through the war, calling for an end to hostilities and providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Abu Dhabi, which has developed closer ties with Moscow in recent years, has also assured its allies that sanctions-hit entities will not be able to operate in the UAE. The Gulf monarchy, which has long argued that it is not compelled to enforce other nations’ sanctions, is keen to maintain its historical role as an apolitical territory focused on business.

Thousands of wealthy, non-sanctions-hit Russians have relocated to the UAE to escape economic uncertainty and political instability at home, even though they sometimes struggle to access the financial system. “Big banks are more cautious but smaller banks are offering help to those wishing to relocate. It’s just taking a lot of time,” said a Russian businessman.

Very wealthy Russians generally find financial institutions accommodating. Most of the wealthy elite have second passports from countries that sell nationality, such as Malta or Portugal, which facilitates the opening of new accounts with lenders that are warier of Russian passport holders.

Others have turned to alternative routes, such as cryptocurrencies and hawala, or informal money exchange services. The cost of this service has risen from 1 per cent of the transaction value to 5 per cent since the war broke out as demand surges, said one person aware of the trades.

Many in the UAE see a hypocrisy in western concern over the presence of the yacht and the Russians building new lives there. “So it was OK for London to take all the oligarch money but not for Dubai?” asked one lawyer.
