The 9th of August is a historic date for the Italian shipbuilding industry, marking 30 years of a record that still stands undefeated, set by the ship Destriero. Since 1992 the “Blue Riband” for the Atlantic crossing has belonged to all those who participated in the design and construction of the ship and the realisation of the challenge.

Destriero: a record still unbeaten after 30 years

On 6 August 1992, Destriero, a fantastic example of Italian naval technology, left behind the Ambrose Light in New York, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the Verrazzano bridge to embark on the record-breaking attempt.

At dawn on 9 August 1992, at 6.14 a.m. and 50 seconds, staff manning the Bishop Rock lighthouse in the Scilly isles off England, still shrouded in fog, were surprised to hear the voice of Cesare Fiorio over the radio: “Good Morning, this is the commander of the ship Destriero, we left from New York, please register the date and time of our passage.” “Good morning Destriero, we were not expecting you so soon…” was the operator’s reply.

Destriero: a record still unbeaten after 30 years

Destriero, flying the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda burgee, had covered 3,106 miles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, at an average speed of 53.09 knots, or 98.323 km/h, taking 21 hours less than the English catamaran Hoverspeed, holder of the previous record.

Waiting for the crew on their arrival was H.H. the Aga Khan, President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the main supporter of the project. In addition to the Blue Riband, Destriero was also awarded the New York Yacht Club’s Columbus Atlantic Trophy and the Virgin Atlantic Challenge Trophy, created by Richard Branson.

The 13 Fastest Superyachts in the World

These boats prove that size doesn't have to mean slow..

13 Fastest superyachts

When American businessman John Staluppi embarked on his yachting journey, it was to break records. He wanted his first yacht to be the first boat over 100 feet to exceed 30 knots, or 34.5 mph. He achieved it with the 118-foot For Your Eyes Only, delivered in 1985. It was also the first motoryacht in the US to have a combination of MTU diesel engines with water-jet propulsion.

His second yacht would smash all previous records. Delivered by Heesen in 1988, Octopussy fulfilled the Bond enthusiast’s aim to break the then 50-knot barrier with a top end of 53.17 knots (61 mph)—a speed that every other shipyard at the time said couldn’t be done. Octopussy  immediately entered the record books as the world’s fastest yacht.

“That record was important to me because when you pull into any place there’s always a bigger boat or a prettier boat, but there aren’t many people who can say, ‘Hey, this is the fastest yacht in the world,’” Staluppi told Robb Report .

Heesen’s latest delivery, the 197-foot Ultra G , is one of the Dutch yard’s fastest projects these days, with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, including four water jets that deliver a top speed of 37 knots (42.57 mph).

Of course, 43 mph is a paltry number compared to many of the yachts on this list, including the new Bolide 80. That Italian stallion, which will make its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, runs at a blistering 84 mph. It shows that speed, even in the large motoryacht category, is very much alive.

Here are 13 of the fastest motoryachts, past and present, that have ever been on the water.

1. Bolide 80 | 84 mph

speed yacht destriero

Victory Marine calls the Bolide 80 its first “Hyper Muscle Yacht,” which will be part of a limited-edition series from 60 to 170 feet. Designer Brunello Acampora and his tema of engineers pulled out all the stops on this 80, creating a full-carbon-fiber boat with more than 6,000 horsepower. The multi-stepped hull helps propel the Bolide to its top speed of 70 knots (84 mph), while accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of burning about half the fuel of a much smaller flybridge motoryacht at lower cruising speeds. The designer took care to give the Bolide a streamlined profile, with aerodynamic shapes to reduce resistance. The interior includes the captain’s cabin, a full-sized galley, open salon, and a forward owner’s area with a bedroom, en suite and wardrobe area. It will make its global debut at the Monaco Yacht Show.

2. ‘Foners’ | 80.56 mph

speed yacht destriero

Clocking a thrilling 70.10 knots (80.56 mph), the 136-foot Foners has maintained pole position as the world’s fastest superyacht for over 20 years. Powered by two 1,280hp MAN engines coupled to three Rolls-Royce 6,700 hp gas turbines driving three KaMeWa water jets, the all-aluminum boat is less about piercing waves and more about parting the seas. Delivered in 2000 by Spanish shipyard Izar as the King of Spain’s royal yacht, no expense was spared, including a superstructure lined with Aramid fiber for the express purpose of bulletproofing the interior.

3. ‘World Is Not Enough’ | 77.1 mph

speed yacht destriero

You need to only look at the 007-inspired name to know that World Is Not Enough is another rapid racer commissioned by John Staluppi, this time with an opulent interior designed by his wife Jeanette in partnership with Evan K Marshall. Delivered in 2004 by Millennium Super Yachts, the 139-footer is powered by two Paxman diesel engines and two Lycoming gas turbines to produce a staggering 20,600hp and a breathtaking 67 knots (77.1 mph). When not leaving other boats behind, World Is Not Enough has a cruising range of 3800 nautical miles at a comfortable speed of 10 knots.

4. ‘Galeocerdo’ | 74.8 mph

speed yacht destriero

Wally founder Luca Bassani designed the 118-foot Galeocerdo to maintain speed in rough seas. Launched in 2003 by Rodriquez Yachts, the boat racks up an eye-watering 65 knots (74.8 mph), thanks to its three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, each driving a Rolls-Royce KaMeWa water jet. Another performance-enhancing feature is the lightweight titanium exhaust system designed to resist the extreme temperatures generated by the gas turbines. Wind tunnel tested at the Ferrari facility in Maranello, Italy, the boat generates 16,800hp and a 45-knot (51.8-mph) cruising speed that’s faster than most motoryachts running flat out. It also enjoys a highly futuristic exterior design.

5. Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 | 72.5 mph

speed yacht destriero

When Italian supercar brand Lamborghini teamed up with yachting stalwart The Italian Sea Group, the end result had to be style and performance. The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is all about the power of ‘63’. Designed and built to celebrate the year 1963 when Ferruccio Lamborghini founded his car company, the 63-footer delivers a whiplashing top speed of 63 knots (72.5 mph). And naturally, it’s one of just 63 in the series that will ever be made. Built out of carbon fiber, it’s fitted with two MAN V12-2000HP engines. MMA fighter Conor McGregor took delivery of hull number one in 2020, which reportedly cost $4 million.

6. ‘Chato’ | 71.9 mph

speed yacht destriero

Back in the mid-1980s, passionate Baglietto customer and leading US Porsche and VW dealer Baron John von Neumann, commissioned a new 85-ft. speed demon from the Italian builder. The entrepreneur was tired of his 34-knot (39-mph) Baglietto getting creamed from Monaco to St. Tropez by faster cruisers. With a hull design by the legendary Alcide Sculati, the all-aluminum Chato came with MTU’s latest 3,480hp V16s coupled to KaMeWa waterjets. Weighing 60 tons, and packing almost 7,000 hp, the military-looking superyacht with its battleship-gray paint and bright-red diagonal hull stripes, hit an astonishing top speed of 62.5 knots (71.9 mph) during sea trials. Chato is currently for sale in the South of France for $715,000.

7. ‘Oci Ciornie’ | 69.04 mph

speed yacht destriero

Oci Ciornie’s Vripack-designed interior may take inspiration from aircraft designs, but it’s the boat’s naval architecture by Don Shead and the combination of two 1,800hp MTU 16V 2000 M90 engines, a 4,600 hp AVCO Lycoming gas turbine and Arneson surface drives that put it on this list. Delivered in 1998 by Palmer Johnson with an aluminum hull, the 82-foot boat thrusts through water at 60 knots (69.04 mph), giving all eight guests the waterborne ride of their lives.

8. ‘Destriero’ | 68 mph

speed yacht destriero

The numbers almost defy logic. With a length of 224 feet, the all-aluminum superyacht Destriero is massive. Now add a trio of GE Aviation LM1600 gas turbines totaling an insane 60,000 hp and the incredulity only increases. Flat out, Destriero could scythe through waves at a staggering 59 knots, or 68 mph. Back in 1992, just one year after its launch, the Fincantieri-built rocketship showed its chops by challenging the famous Blue Riband trans-Atlantic speed record. Averaging 53.09 knots for the 3,106 nautical-mile run, Destriero shattered the record, only to be denied the trophy for being classed as a private yacht and not a commercial passenger vessel. Sadly, today the iconic yacht lies largely abandoned at one of Lurssen’s yards in Germany, awaiting rescue.

9. ‘Ermis²’ | 65.59 mph

speed yacht destriero

Some yachts feature slippery hull designs, others are propelled by rockets, but the McMullen & Wing-built Ermis² is one of the fastest yachts on the superyacht circuit thanks to its lightweight materials. Built from a combination of carbon/epoxy, aerospace grade carbon fiber and titanium, the 123-foot boat taps out at 57 knots (65.59 mph.) Delivered in 2007, its 10,944 horsepower comes from three MTU 16V 4000 M90 engines. Designed inside and out by Rob Humphreys, its classic looks disguise the speed demon within.

10. ‘Why Not U’ | 63.3 mph

speed yacht destriero

Why Not U is a yacht that comfortably cruises at 47 knots (54.1 mph)—a speed most owners only dream of reaching. When time is of the essence, the boat cranks up its Vericor TF40 gas turbine engines to max out at 55 knots (63.3 mph). Delivered by Overmarine in 2001, Why Not U ’s 4.3-foot draft makes it well suited for cruising shallow waters, while its sunbathing areas allow guests to catch some rays traveling at the speed of light.

11. ‘Alamshar’ | 52 mph

speed yacht destriero

Alamshar is another custom collaboration between Donald Blount and Pininfarina commissioned by Aga Khan IV, this time with interiors by Redman Whiteley Dixon. It was reportedly built for an estimated $200 million at the Devonport shipyard in Falmouth, United Kingdom, and took 13 years to complete. When it was eventually delivered in 2014, Alamshar’s top speed of 45 knots (51.78 mph), generated by twin Rolls-Royce Marine engines and three waterjets, seemed worth the wait.

12. ‘Moon Goddess’ | 51.78 mph

speed yacht destriero

Exterior designed by Espen Øino with an interior by Franco Zuretti, the all-aluminum Moon Goddess is a 115-foot yacht with a turquoise hull that matches the color of its oversized leather sunpads. When cruising at 30 knots (34.52 mph) or tearing up the oceans at 45 knots (51.78 mph), most other boats just catch a glimpse of sea spray that the planing yacht leaves in its wake. It’s powered by twin MTU 16V 4000 M90 diesel engines with twin water jets, which generate a combined 7,498 hp.

13. ‘Azzam’ | 35.7 mph

speed yacht destriero

At a staggering 590 feet bow-to-stern, the Lurssen-built Azzam earns the title of world’s longest privately owned gigayacht. But with its remarkable-for-the-size top speed of 31 knots (35.7 mph), it’s also the fastest. Twin 12,000hp MTU V20 turbo-diesels do the day-to-day powering at up to 18 knots (20.7 mph). But crank up the twin GE LM2500 gas turbines, coupled to four Wartsila waterjets, and there’s a staggering 94,000hp on tap. Of course, like Azzam ‘s original owner, it helps if you own a few oil wells: At max speed, the yacht reportedly burns 13 tons of fuel an hour. Launched in 2013 at a reported cost of some $600 million, Azzam accommodates 30 guests pampered by up to 80 crew.

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DESTRIERO CHALLENGE

The Italian yacht still holds the Blue Riband record

09 august 2017.

Trieste, August 9, 2017 – Today, 25 years ago, the Destriero , the fastest motor yacht in the world, set the record for crossing the Atlantic in 1992. This record is yet unbeaten.

The monohull, built in 1991 in less than one year in the Fincantieri shipyard of Muggiano and Riva Trigoso, sailed 3,106 nautical miles without refueling, from Ambrose Light, New York to Bishop Rock lightship on the Scilly  Isles, England, in 58 hours at an average speed of  53 knots (reaching a maximum speed of 66 knots), claiming once more the Blue Riband, awarded in 1933 to the legendary transatlantic liner Rex.

In order to celebrate the feat, on September 5 th , 1992 the Destriero was also awarded the Virgin Atlantic Trophy by the English business magnate Richard Branson for the fastest trans-Atlantic crossing, as well as the New York Yacht Club Columbus Atlantic Trophy.

At that time, the Destriero was the largest unit in light alloy ever built, one of the ships with the highest efficiency, power and technology concentration, a real jewel of the Italian shipbuilding industry. At 67 meters long with a beam of 13 meters and 60,000 HP, the yacht was able to reach average speeds exceeding 60 knots. Record figures, an Italian pride, the result based on a wealth of experience gained by Fincantieri in over 200 years of shipbuilding history, which still allow the Group to build the most beautiful and efficient civil and naval ships.

Historical Context

The Atlantic Ocean has been a vital part of maritime history, connecting continents and facilitating trade, travel, and the exchange of ideas. Throughout history, vessels have swiftly sought ways to cross the Atlantic, from the early days of the Christopher Columbus voyage to modern technological advancements.

We’ll explore the fastest boats that have crossed the Atlantic and how they evolved over time.

World War II saw significant improvements in maritime technology, with ships becoming faster and more efficient. One notable example is the SS United States, a liner that held the transatlantic crossing speed record of 3.5 days in 1952. However, the advent of air transportation diminished the importance of these grand liners.

In the early days of transatlantic crossings, steamship voyages took notably longer. For instance, in August 1838, the steamship Great Western completed its trailblazing voyage from New York to Bristol in 15 days.

Additionally, Philadelphia, Italy, and other countries have contributed to the development of fast and reliable ships. Some vessels, such as the majestic RMS Titanic, have become symbols of luxury and grandeur.

As we explore the history of the fastest boats crossing the Atlantic Ocean and delve into the notable achievements and advances they represent, it becomes evident that the spirit of competition and technological innovation has been integral to the story.

Maritime achievements of the past, including the impressive record set by the Hoverspeed Great Britain, inspire future explorations and improvements in maritime transportation.

The Races Over the Years

Over the years, numerous races and records have been set for the fastest boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean. These competitions have attracted a variety of participants, witnessed incredible victories, and even sparked a few controversies.

Here, we’ll delve into the notable participants, some of the most significant victories, and the controversies that have arisen as boats have vied to claim the title of the fastest Atlantic crossing.

The Participants

Throughout the history of Atlantic crossings, various types of vessels have taken part in these races. Each has attempted to make its mark in this prestigious contest, from early passenger liners to modern high-speed catamarans.

The participants have included dedicated race teams, professional sailors, and even private boat owners who have all sought to test the limits of their vessels and crews.

The Victories

As mentioned, the current record holder for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean is the Destriero. In 1992, this impressively designed boat, measuring 68 meters in length, 13 meters in beam, and boasting 60,000 horsepower, managed to achieve an average speed of over 60 knots.

This incredible achievement remains unbeaten to date, and the Destriero still stands as a symbol of Italian pride and nautical engineering prowess.

Another major prize for Atlantic crossings is the Blue Riband, awarded to the passenger liner with the record for the highest average speed during a regular transatlantic voyage. This illustrious accolade has been held by a number of famous ships throughout history, including the RMS Queen Mary and the SS United States.

The Controversies

As with any competitive environment, the pursuit of breaking records in Atlantic crossings has not been without its share of controversies. There have been disputes over the legitimacy of some records due to differences in routes or vessel classifications.

Concerns over safety and environmental impacts related to high-speed crossings have also arisen, sparking debate within the maritime community.

Ecological Impact and Sustainability

As we delve into the world of high-speed boat crossings in the Atlantic Ocean, it's essential to understand the ecological impact of these vessels and the sustainability practices adopted by crews.

High-speed boat crossings often generate a significant carbon footprint, as they require vast amounts of fuel and energy to propel the vessels across the Atlantic Ocean at record speeds.

However, several innovative solutions have been implemented by record-setting crews to minimize their ecological impact. These efforts include the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and underwater turbines, to generate electricity during crossings.

Moreover, sustainable practices on board the vessels, such as waste reduction and recycling, are essential to ensure a more eco-friendly voyage. Crews also make conscious efforts to avoid sensitive marine areas and follow designated routes to minimize disturbances to marine ecosystems.

These practices contribute significantly to responsible voyaging across the Atlantic Ocean.

Fincantieri Marks 20 Years of the Destriero

  • July 24, 2012

speed yacht destriero

The monohull, built in 1991 in less than a year by Fincantieri, sailed 3,106 nautical miles without refueling, from  Ambrose Light, New York to Bishop Rock lightship on the Scilly  Isles, England, in 58 hours at an average speed of  53 knots (reaching  peaks of  70), and won once more the Blue Riband which in 1933 had been awarded to the legendary transatlantic liner, the Rex.

Present at the event were Corrado Antonini, Chairman of  Fincantieri, Cesare Fiorio, head of the Destriero Challenge program  and Aldo Benedetti, second-in-command of  the Destriero.

Built at the shipyards of  Muggiano and Riva Trigoso, the Destriero was the largest ship in light alloy ever to be constructed and one of the vessels with the highest  concentration of  efficiency, power and technology. At 67 metres long with a beam of  13 metres and 60,000 HP, the yacht could reach average speeds of over  60 knots. Record figures, the pride of Italy, a result based on a wealth of  experience in the construction  of  ships gained by Fincantieri in the course of over two centuries. The Destriero marked for Fincantieri the beginning of the production of  a new generation of  high speed vessels with consequent benefits for commercial development.

The challenge of  the Destriero started with the aim to break the record for crossing the Atlantic, for which the Blue Riband has been awarded since 1838. Later, in 1935 winners of the Blue Riband were also awarded the Hales Trophy, following a proposal from a British MP, Harold Hales. The competition regulations allow merchant vessels to participate provided that,  during an in Atlantic crossing, from East to West, they meet certain requirements: to have mail on board, paying passengers and a professional crew. The Destriero follows in the wake of this tradition; her challenge to the Atlantic starts from a passion for naval technology, from Ismaili Prince Karim Aga Khan, who sponsored the initiative, supported by leading testimonials of Italian industry and culture of the time, from the Fiat of  Gianni Agnelli,  to the IRI of  Franco Nobili and other numerous sponsors.

A General Description of Motor Yacht DESTRIERO

This motor yacht DESTRIERO is a 68 m 224 (ft) significant aluminium boat which was built by Fincantieri Yachts - Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani and devised by Cmn and Donald L Blount & Assoc and Pininfarina.

This yacht was built as a jet powered yacht which still holds the transatlantic speed record. When built she had three GE LM1600 gas turbines fitted giving her a maximum speed of 110 km/h (59.4 Knots, 68.4 MPH). Yacht DESTRIERO then competed for the Blue Riband award in 1992, creating a still to be bettered speed record of 53.1 knots average from New York to England without refueling. Unfortunately, she as considered a ‘private yacht’ as opposed to a ‘commercial passenger vessel’ and denied the award. The ship was "laid up" in for the last 10 years, but was removed in February 2009[3], reportedly for After spending 10 years at the HMNB Devonport dockyard, Plymouth, England, motor yacht DESTRIERO was moved to the German Lürssen ship yard in 2009.

The New Build & Naval Architecture with respect to Luxury Yacht DESTRIERO

Cmn was the naval architect involved in the professional vessel design work for DESTRIERO. Cmn and Donald L Blount & Assoc and Pininfarina is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. In 1991 she was formally launched to celebration in Muggiano and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the owner who commissioned her. Fincantieri Yachts - Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani completed their new build motor yacht in Italy. The core hull was built out of aluminium. The motor yacht superstructure component is made mostly using aluminium. With a beam of 12.91 m / 42.4 feet DESTRIERO has open room. She had refit improvement and changes completed by 2000.

M/Y DESTRIERO Main Engines & Speed:

Installed with triple GEC/MTU codog main engines, DESTRIERO can attain a top speed of 66 knots. She is driven by tripple water jets (kamewa). She also has an efficient range of 3500 miles when sailing at her cruise speed of 50 knots. Her total HP is 54990 HP and her total Kilowatts are 40464.

Destriero will be dismantled: the sad end of the symbol of excellence in the Italian boating industry.

  • Luca D'Ambrosio
  • May 3, 2024

The yacht Destriero, symbol of excellence in the Italian boating industry, will be demolished, as confirmed by sources close to the shipyard. This news is truly unbelievable considering that the ceremony celebrating its thirtieth anniversary took place just two years ago. An important ceremony held in La Spezia, right where Destriero was originally built, at the Muggiano shipyard.

“ It was a touching ceremony – recalls Ivan Drogo Inglese, President of the Stati Generali del Patrimonio Italiano and organizer of the event along with the Fondazione Fincantieri – The event saw the participation of Fincantieri’s President, General Claudio Graziano , pilot Cesare Fiorio , Undersecretary Stefania Pucciarelli, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Secretary Edoardo Recchi , and of course, the crew members and their families “.

nastro-azzurro

After the international limelight and an initial idea, immediately abandoned, to transform the record-breaking vessel into a yacht, Destriero ended up in Bremen, at the Lürssen shipyards where it was dry-docked, stripped of its turbines, and left exposed to the relentless effects of time. The costly yet lightweight aluminum construction had gradually deteriorated, resulting in significant hull breaches, despite the Aga Khan administration consistently covering the expensive mooring costs of the vessel.

Destriero’s feat also laid the groundwork for the development of the fast cruise ship segment, a very important sector from which Fincantieri itself has greatly benefited until today. It was precisely because of this “debt of honor” that Drogo Inglese had tried to involve the Italian group in a possible restoration, aimed at enhancing this important vessel. One of the plausible hypotheses would have been to place Destriero on the waterfront of the port of La Spezia, near the naval design educational center of the University of Genoa.

Destriero: the feat and the victory of the “Blue Ribbon”

Destriero was designed by the naval architecture studio Donald L. Blount and Associates and was equipped with three General Electric LM1600 gas turbines capable of generating an impressive total power of 51,675 hp (38,534 kW). These turbines, connected to three waterjets, could propel this super-fast superyacht to speeds close to 70 knots, or almost 130 km/h.

Measuring an impressive 67.7 meters in length and 13 meters in width, Destriero boasted a range of over 3,000 nautical miles. What still astonishes to this day is its ability to navigate at stellar speeds, even in rough sea conditions. The renowned institution Det Norske Veritas had certified the vessel’s structure for speeds up to 65 knots in sea state 4 conditions, with waves up to 2.5 meters high, and for speeds up to 30 knots in waves up to 5 meters high!

Built by Fincantieri in just 270 days, a record within the record, Destriero benefited from aerodynamics studied, even using wind tunnel testing, by Pininfarina. The bow accommodated the impressive fuel tanks, totaling 800 tonnes, while the crew of 16 members were allocated only 6 bunks, which, of course, were occupied in shifts.

On August 6, 1982, at 18:59 Greenwich time, Destriero departed from the Ambrose Light in New York, and after an incredible journey of 3,106 miles, at 06:14:50, precisely 2 days, 10 hours, 34 minutes, and 50 seconds later, it crossed the imaginary finish line, set at the Bishop Rock Lighthouse in England, earning the Blue Ribbon and beating the previous record by 21.5 hours.

The average speed of the crossing remains impressive to this day, at 53.09 knots (98.3 km/h), with a record average distance covered in 24 hours of 1,402 nautical miles, traveled at an incredible speed of 58.4 knots.

The crew of Destriero consisted of Cesare Fiorio (responsible and organizer), Odoardo Mancini (captain), Aldo Benedetti (second in command), Sergio Simeone (first officer), Franco De Mei (telecommunications), Giuseppe Carbonaro (chief engineer), Mario Gando and Nello Andreoli (chief mechanics), Massimo Robino (electrician), Silvano Federici, Cesare Quondamatteo, and Carlo Chiara (engineers), and technicians Davide Maccario, Giacomo Petriccione, Giuseppe Valenti, and Michael Hurrle.

Destriero is a 67-metre (220 ft) long, 13-metre (43 ft) wide, 400-ton displacement, yacht built by Fincantieri in their Muggiano yard at La Spezia in 1991. She is fitted with three GE Aviation LM1600gas turbines totalling 60,000-horsepower (45,000 kW),[1] providing her with a maximum speed of 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph; 59 kn).

In 1992 the Virgin Atlantic Challenge was again won, by the Aga Khan's Destriero crossing in 58 hours 34 minutes and averaging 53.09 knots. She also made a record-breaking return journey, winning the Columbus Atlantic Trophy, posted by the yacht club in response to the Virgin Atlantic Challenge for the fastest two-way voyage i.e. a single crossing and return voyage within a specified time.

Status 05.09.2023: DESTRIERO should be scrapped by Lürssen into the ship hall.

It seems we will never seen DESTRIERO back into water

The story about DESTRIERO and Lürssen shipyard is the biggest secret in town.

Nobody knows the reason for parking of the high speed boat of Aga Khan at Lürssen shipyard since 2009

Additionally why no service was done over the time, the boat crumbles more and more.

It was an ugly and dirty boat presentation infront of the shipyard if you arrive by the river Weser.

And now after 14 years something is happening.

There are plenty faster boats. Just not ones that can go trans-Atlantic non-stop.

I would think being perfectly level and unaffected by waves would make shooting at things much easier, and being able to go so fast would make it harder for others to shoot at you, and being above the water makes you almost torpedo proof. Getting refueled in a combat zone is a bad idea. 12 knots off foils leaves you way behind in a carrier group. I say their published speed is low...is because once I know I was following one in an 80 knot helicopter and it pulled away from me...another time off Haiti I chased what must have been one again at 80kts and never saw it...only its wake as it pulled away from me. Granted headwinds made me slower than 80kts...but how much I wasn't keeping track... could have been very low to a max of 15 knots. Click to expand...

I had a tour of a Canadian Frigate. Multiple engines, Diesel for cruising, Gas Turbine(s) for speed. They publish a top speed, but my friend guiding my tour told me a number far different than the published number. Probably a violation of the Official Secrets Act to mention it.

Here's a little info about the Flagstaff. It was both a Navy and Coast Guard hydrofoil in the 60's & 70's. According to Wikipedia its speed was "at least 45 knots" Did the USCG have many hydrofoils ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Flagstaff

There have been a few prototypes ...but the 6 Pegasus Class I posted a pic of were in Key West when I was stationed in Miami and primarily deployed out of Key West.

According to a former Navy neighbor of mine, even the biggest aircraft carriers have to be able to do 40 knots to get aircraft launched if there is no ambient (head) wind.

The Pegasus hydrofoils were a Boeing project. I recall plotting one at 60 kts on Puget Sound undergoing sea trials. Boeing also developed passenger hydrofoils. https://www.boeing.com/history/products/jetfoil-hydrofoil.page

Last summer I visited a coast guard station off Woods Hole, and I remarked about the bulkiness of the vessels that carried the Coast Guard strip. The cigar boats and other sleek vessels that could do donuts around the CG ships that I saw, and my remark, drew the attention of a CG officer that was taking pictures. He said, and I quote, " If these guys can outrun a Hyper Velocity Projectile that we can send down range, they're lucky, very, very lucky. Enough said....

I remember the Boeing hydrofoils testing in Puget Sound off Alki Point. One must have hit a log or something because it came down with a huge splash.

BandB said: I remember when I was a kid and the NC Wildlife Commission first got a plane. We had some extremely fast boats on the lake that would outrun the game wardens. So, remember one of the first that ran many miles up the lake, tied the boat up and they were about to run. Another game warden drove up in a car and held them until the ones chasing them arrived. speed yacht destriero

nsmg New Member

Cheers, I'm a big fan of the Destriero for many years. Since it won the Blue Riband in 1992 it disappeared from the public view. Does anyone here have news about the current location of the boat or any photos ? Best Regards.

The Destriero is alongside in the UK at the Naval Base in Plymouth. Shes been there a while, i've asked loads of people why shes here and who owns her but nobody really knows. Its a great shame to see a boat like that just sat in the water.

Thanks for the picture! The smaller yacht outside Destriero looks like the 28 m Kalamoun from 1973 which was then the fastest diesel powered yacht with 46 knots. One of my favorites from Abeking & Rasmussen... It is just that the forward roof is a little longer than it was, so either it is another yacht, or she is extended?

Hi, i'm also a fan of the Destriero and since a long time i search pictures and information about it. It seems that she lays still at Devonport in Plymouth: http://www.merseyshipping.co.uk/photofeatures/irishcelticseas/england/destriero260806/destriero260806.htm Here is a picture of Google Earth Greetz

I might be mistaken, but is the boat pictured next to her "Fortuna" the x royal royal yacht of the king of Spain. Such a sad sight to see Yachts in such disrepair.
Nope, not Fortuna. Looks more like Shergar, but not exactly and she should have been refitted at Lürssen recently. I agree, sad to see both of them just sitting there.... The little one could be fun to have, but Destriero would be a costly toy!

I wonder what her berthing charges are? Someone is paying a lot of money for her to just ly there and rust.

Hi, AMG once again scores with this which is the correct Answer. AMG said: Thanks for the picture! So she was extended in both ends then, amazing job. It looks a little like Gilgenast may have been involved with this...?

the smaller yacht is the shergar
Hi, Welcome to Yachtforums Marc. Where did you get that info from? 11 days ago it was Kalamoun.

Garry Hartshorn Senior Member

I do believe that Marc is correct but it is many years since I have seen Shergar in the flesh so I could be wrong
Hi, I saw Shergar a few months ago at Lurssens. I got the info about what it was from a guy who was in DML on the day I posted the info. I took his info as being pretty reliable which is why I posted it. I do stand to be corrected however if this info proves to be wrong.
Hi, I found this: http://www.ajaxnetphoto.com/recent/051105_naval_fost_10/pages/page_31.html It confirms what I was told and wrote earlier that it is Kalamoun outside Destriero at Devonport.
There you go. It has been about 12 years since I last laid eyes on her myself, which by the way was in South Beach Marina in Miami
well it was the shergar up until 2004 which was the last time i walked past it
