We take pride in our happy customers

Andrew, and Andrew are both fantastic. Transaction was smooth and professional highly recommend the team over at Multihull.

— Paul Fosler

I just purchased my first large boat (my dreamboat) and Michael Streng and the rest of TMC was amazing! I really felt like I was a VIP customer because they were fast and easy to communicate with and worked ahead of me. It really was a treat and I would use them again any day!

— Collin Simmons

Andrew Hodgdon and The Multihull Company have done an extraordinary job facilitating the sale of our catamaran. There were a couple of challenges (geography and timing) that made this sale a little tricky, but, as usual, Andrew was amazing. I’ve been buying and selling cruising boats for over 12 years and Andrew is, without a doubt, the best broker I’ve worked with.

— Mort Orlov

Andrew Hodgdon at TMC-St. Augustine kept us thoroughly informed during the sale of our boat and took the extra steps necessary to complete the deal. His knowledge of the process made a complex deal very easy. Needless to say, we are extremely happy and satisfied with the job that Andrew did.

— David Baxter

A shout out to Andrew Holland at the TMC main office, who handled the closing transaction of the sale of our boat. Very professional and thorough. Thank you!!

Maine Cat 38 Catamaran Review

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: August 16, 2018

Maine Cat 38

Most boats are nouns; the Maine Cat 38 is a verb — a boat that can be understood only in motion, and preferably under sail with a good breeze blowing.

Last March, I sailed the Maine Cat 38 Tamarack , hull number four, in the Sea of Abaco, Bahamas, with my parents, my college-age daughter and her friend. Meanwhile, one of 2018’s several historic winter storms was blowing through New England and the Canadian Maritimes, sending massive swells down our way and contributing to a squash zone of isobars on our local weather map. In the Abacos, that meant 20-foot seas offshore, rages in the cuts between cays and sustained winds edging toward 30 knots all week. Already on the Monday we flew in, Marsh Harbour’s supermarket shelves were empty of milk and fresh produce; for the next five days, the Bahamian mail boats were forbidden to leave the safety of their docks in Nassau. For us aboard Tamarack , the weather forced us to do all of our sailing inside the Sea of Abaco. But even in this usually protected sound, we encountered seas of 8 to 10 feet, sometimes breaking.

In those conditions, the Maine Cat 38 behaved like no other boat, monohull or multihull, that I’ve ever sailed. “This boat just gets up and frolics,” is how Sue Murphy, my mom, described sailing it.

Dick Vermeulen founded Maine Cat in 1993. Since then, his team of a dozen craftsmen in Midcoast Maine has launched some 140 sail- and powerboats, including 63 30-foot and 24 41-foot sailboats. Recently, Vermeulen created the Maine Cat 38 to return to simpler roots — a boat with no genset, no air conditioning, no microwave oven and just one head; a boat that a single person would be willing to take out sailing, with or without crew. And Vermeulen set himself one other goal: “This boat has to be the fastest cruising cat out there, or I’ve failed at everything I’ve done.” (For details about the genesis of the 38’s design, see “Birth of a Cat,” CW, July 2017.)

Self-tending headsail

For our gang, mere speed wasn’t the priority. Yet the qualitative experience of sailing a boat whose creator took such care to keep the weight out was a revelation to all of us. Tom Murphy, my dad, has worked as a yacht broker for more than 30 years and has made hundreds of coastal and offshore yacht deliveries, often harrowing ones. “The way this boat lifted in 8-foot seas,” he said, “I mean, you’d see a roller coming in, and you’d tense up and steer into it and wait to take the sleigh ride down the back side and bury the bows — and that just never happened. Instead, you’d get up on top of a wave, and it would feel like the wave was flat, and you would just sort of come down with it. No pitch, no roll, no burying the bows or the stern.” Like me, he’d never experienced a boat that felt like this.

Helm station

Vermeulen is a mechanical engineer by training. The effect he created in this boat is the result of a single-minded commitment to keeping weight out of it, both in the initial build and in the systems that go aboard. He determined that in order to achieve the speeds he was after, he needed 12-to-1 length-to-beam ratios in the hulls. A consequence of that choice is that you can’t then add all the weight of the luxury items you’d find on a typical production catamaran . Narrow hulls lack the buoyancy to carry heavy equipment or big tankage. Unlike similar-size models from high-production builders, the MC 38 isn’t intended to sleep more than five people; there’s just one marine head fitted in one of the hulls; and propulsion is not from twin diesels but from a pair of 9.9hp outboard motors. The galley stove has three burners but no oven. Cabin spaces are separated by drapes, not doors.

Outboards

The construction of the hull and deck is different from that of the high-production cat builders too. Typically, builders achieve complex curves in sandwich construction by using core that’s scored in slices called kerfs. When you bend a panel of scored foam, the kerfs open up; in the final composite part, the kerfs fill with resin. In a technique Vermeulen saw at Maine builders Hodgdon Yachts and Lyman-Morse, then developed with Gurit Composites, his team “thermoforms” Core-Cell foam in the shape of the final hull; this is unsliced foam, with no kerfs. His team heats the Core-Cell to 165 degrees Fahrenheit in an infrared oven, then infuses the fiberglass and core with vinylester resin. The result is a uniform part, with uniform physical properties. And the weight? “It’s ridiculous,” Vermeulen said. “When we built the first 38 hull, with three bulkheads in it, but 38 feet long, 6 feet wide and 6 feet of depth, it weighed 426 pounds. I could lift the hull out of the cradles.”

“It takes us a little longer to build hulls,” Vermeulen said, “but it’s just bomber.”

The boat we sailed was in charter service, managed by Abaco Multihull Charters based in Hope Town. It was fitted with good-quality cruising sails, but no screacher or full-on performance sails. Our reaching speeds were typically in the 9- and 10-knot range. We put the first reef in at 20 knots; second reef at 25. It tacked easily with both main and roller-furling headsail and both daggerboards down, but struggled to tack under main alone, as most cats will.

Port hull

Motoring out of Hope Town Harbor into 25 knots and a steep 3-foot chop at 80 percent throttle with the twin 9.9 horsepower outboards, we made just over 3 knots of boat speed and heard the motors cavitate on every third wave or so. In those conditions, the boat felt underpowered. By contrast, in flat water we easily achieved motoring speeds of 6 and 7 knots.

“You probably know the little auxiliary engines on the MC 38 are by design,” Vermeulen said when I described our experience. “When I hear that sailors on other boats are under power 50 percent of the time, I cringe. If I make the engines small enough, MC 38 owners are going to sail all the time. With a screacher or code zero, the MC 38 will sail at 5 knots in 5 knots of true wind. Who needs motors except to dock or drop the hook? The way sailing should be!”

The experience I most enjoyed on the MC 38 was going forward under sail onto the trampolines as we reached past Tahiti Beach under double-reefed main. I lay face-down and watched the hulls move through uncommonly disturbed water. The 38’s leeward hull didn’t dig in; the windward hull didn’t lift out. No wave ever slammed the bridgedeck. The steep chop seldom even reached the longitudinal chine 12 inches above the waterline on each hull.

The Maine Cat 38 is a boat that positively dances through the waves.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Leopard 38 Review and Common Problems

38' catamaran

Leopard didn’t start small, but rather, began their sailing catamaran line-up with a 45-foot catamaran in 1997 before moving to the Leopard 38 in 1998. All total, they built 124 Leopard 38s.

The Leopard 38 (also branded as the Sunsail 384), was designed by Morrelli & Melvin, who have designed some of the fastest multihulls to glide across an ocean. No stranger to design awards, M&M’s Leopard 38 designs won the Cruising World 2010 Boat of the Year in two categories:

  • Best Multihull Cruiser of the Year, and
  • Best Import Boat of the Year

That same year, they won SAIL Magazine’s 2010 Best Boat” in the Cruising Multihull Category.

So, what features make these vessels so desirable? Let’s check it out.

Though designed by individuals with a fetish for performance, the Leopard 38 falls closer to the comfort side of the spectrum. However, she will sail better than some of her other production catamaran competitors. Here’s what potential cruisers can look forward to on the Leopard 38:

  • Stiff & Light Design. The Leopard 38 is built using vacuum-bag, balsa-cored construction techniques, resulting in a strong, yet lighter vessel than a solid fiberglass model. Below the waterline you will find solid laminate.
  • Warm Interior Appointments. Unlike many catamarans that have a more sterile interior, Leopard catamarans utilize rich wood finishes throughout the vessel, giving it a more traditional, almost-monohull feel.
  • Plenty of Storage. Though originally built with the charter market in mind, the Leopard 38 boasts ample storage throughout. Cruisers will enjoy plenty of room to store provisions and water toys.
  • Roomy Deck & Cockpit. While the interior living areas may seem a bit crowded, the designers made up for that with a large cockpit perfect for lounging or enjoying a meal with new friends from the anchorage. The side decks are flat and wide enough to move with minimal obstacles in a sea state. And of course, the large trampoline provides plenty of space for sundowners or dolphin watching.

General layouts include a 4-cabin and 3-cabin owner’s version. Both feature a u-shaped galley-up. Depending on the model year, you will find the galley either forward and adjacent to the settee area, or aft with a pass-thru window to the cockpit. Taller owners and crew can enjoy over 6’ of headroom inside.

Earlier models (pre-2005) are built with skeg-hung rudders, which provide additional protection against impact with underwater objects. These models also come with traditional shaft drives, as opposed to the more modern trend towards sail drives. Direct drives are easier to maintain and do not require frequent haul-outs for service, potentially reducing overall cost of ownership.

Powered by twin Yanmar 30-horsepower diesel engines, located aft near the sugar scoops, owners can generally find parts readily available for repairs. This size engine is sufficient to power a vessel of this size up to 7 knots all-out to avoid weather.

Under sail, the Leopard 38 can achieve speeds over 8 knots in the right conditions with a fully-battened mainsail and furling jib. Leopard outfitted the main with a 2:1 purchase for ease of hoisting. The main halyards and reefing control lines a located at the mast, while remaining sail controls are run to dual winches at the helm station. With enough skill, the Leopard 38 can be single-handed under its stock configuration.

Things to Watch Out For

Like any boat, there are trade-offs. What struck me the most about the earlier Leopard 38 design was the inability to truly see your surroundings anywhere in the cockpit other than at the helm station. While the louvered windows do provide steps to the coach roof and shade for the salon, you can’t really see enough to be able to relax in the cockpit while on watch.

If you’re purchasing a Leopard 38 on the secondary market, you will be lucky to find one that has not been subjected to charterers. Common issues you may see include:

  • Significantly cracked gelcoat
  • Broken bilge tabs
  • Loose stanchions
  • Worn out engine components
  • Tired rigging
  • Water intrusion

This last one can be significant given the balsa core, which contrary to popular belief, can retain and transmit water. Given enough time and neglect, rot can set in, leaving you with expensive repairs or worse, failure of a critical system, like the rigging.

In older Leopard 38 models, the salon and galley are located side-by-side, making things a little cramped in that area. While it’s true that most of catamaran life is spent lounging out on the trampolines or in the cockpit, there are the occasional foul weather days when the desire to remain indoors is strong. For anyone other than a couple, passengers may opt to hang out in their cabins than in the common areas.

Newer models have removed the louvered portlights, pushed the salon forward and moved the galley aft. This created a more expansive seating area and allowed for a galley with more interaction with the cockpit for passage of food and beverages.

While the Leopard may sail better than similarly-sized competing production catamarans, don’t expect to sail closer to the wind than 60 degrees, especially if you’ve taken advantage of that ample storage. She’s built for comfort over performance. However, her high-volume hulls offer improved pitch resistance to temper rough or confused seas.

The Bottom Line

Leopards have a great reputation for comfort and reliability. Just about every one of them has crossed an ocean to meet its owner, and many have circumnavigated. Like any vessel, ensure a comprehensive survey of all systems before purchase to locate any lapses or delays in maintenance.
