Dufour 460 Grand Large

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: April 24, 2017

dufour 460 gl

Every builder of every new boat has a target clientele in mind. Some seek long-term liveaboards; others want a dual-purpose boat aboard which they can race or cruise. With their latest offering, the Dufour 460 Grand Large, the decision-makers at the venerable French firm zeroed in with laser focus at precisely the type of sailor and owner they were searching for, and their aim — at first glance anyway — seems surprising. What Dufour wants is an experienced sailor who will use their boat primarily for coastal cruising — though the company added the tankage and strength for an occasional offshore passage — but with features and a layout that really heighten the social side of sailing. In other words, the sailing side of the equation is definitely important, but when the hook’s down and the day is done, you’d best be ready to party.

Only after spending a bit of time on the boat do you realize this makes perfect sense.

Dufour has done a couple of interesting things with the layout to facilitate the fun. First, in the main cabin, they have positioned the beam-width galley all the way forward, basically installing it as part of the athwartships bulkhead that delineates the saloon from the forward master stateroom. It really opens up the space for entertaining. Then, because who wouldn’t want a second, outdoor kitchen, they’ve added another pop-up galley in the aft end of the cockpit and incorporated into a helmsman’s seat, the “floor” of which is the drop-down transom. It’s complete with grill, sink and plenty of counter space for whipping up snacks and meals. Yes, this sounds kind of odd. In practice and execution, it’s the bee’s knees.

Having the necessary volume to achieve all this is vitally important, and the 460 has it in spades. Thanks to the hard chine that contributes to the boat’s impressive 14-foot-9-inch beam (which is carried well aft), and to its tall freeboard, the yacht seems even bigger than its 46 feet of overall length. Yet with its fixed standard sprit, long waterline and plumb bow, low-profile coach roof and the judicious addition of three horizontal windows in the hull, the 460 exudes contemporary good looks and appears proportionately sound. It’s almost like a magic trick.

Down below, the forward owner’s cabin features a whopping queen berth with side entries and a “split” head, with a large, dedicated shower stall to port and the toilet to starboard in its own compartment. In the saloon, aft of the unusually placed galley, to port there’s a small settee behind which is a wine rack or the space for a flat-screen TV. To starboard sits the dining table with seating on three sides. A convertible navigation station on a sliding track is situated aft of the outboard settee, and can be configured so the navigator sits facing forward or aft, depending on preference. It can also be raised or lowered to rest perpendicular if the boat is heeling underway. A second head is to port, and the floor plan is finished off with a pair of double cabins aft.

dufour 460 gl

On deck, as with most modern yachts in this size range, there’s a set of twin wheels with instrumentation in the pedestals and a Raymarine chart plotter in clear view on the aft end of the central cockpit table. Life-raft stowage is under a step abaft the starboard wheel, and there are adjustable foot braces behind each helm so the driver has level footing when the boat is heeled. A double-ended German-style mainsheet is led to Lewmar winches to port and starboard of the helms; the traveler is forward of the dodger and controlled by winches on the coach roof, as are the halyards and reefing lines, which are led aft under on-deck panels.

The double-spreader fractional rig employs a self-tacking jib on its own track just forward of the deck-stepped mast (the compression post for the spar is in the forward owner’s cabin so it doesn’t hinder the open spaces in the saloon). An overlapping 135 percent genoa, the tracks for which are already installed, is an option. The shrouds are positioned well outboard for easy egress forward.

On the bow, the roller-furling unit is mounted in the center of the bowsprit, which has a robust pad eye all the way forward for tacking asymmetric kites or a Code Zero-type reaching sail. A Lewmar windlass is aft of the sprit and just forward of the good-size sail locker, which also provides easy access to the deep chain locker.

Construction is straightforward, with a hand-laid, solid-fiberglass hull and a one-piece deck that’s injection-molded. The price of the base boat is around $300,000, but our test boat — fully equipped with electric winches, a generator, air conditioning and electronics — topped off at a little over $400,000. Still, it’s a lot of boat for the bucks.

The 460 was designed by Umberto Felci, Dufour’s go-to naval architect, who has built his reputation on yachts that sail very well. We tested the boat in light airs of only 3 to 4 knots on a mellow Chesapeake Bay. Yet the performance was still impressive: The boat had little trouble sailing as fast as the wind on a closehauled course, making 3.5 knots in the lulls and 4.5 knots with slightly more pressure. The boat comes with a traditional mainsail and headsail, both from Elvstrom Sails. As the Dufour representative pointed out, it would’ve been a perfect day for a Code Zero headsail, which he recommended to augment the yacht’s working sails.

All in all, the rather innovative Dufour 460 impressed me. No, it’s not for everyone, especially if your plans include long-range liveaboard cruising. However, there’s no question that if what you’re after is a pleasurable ride for coastal jaunts and vacation sailing, and if having a blast once the day is done is a high priority, you’ll find much to like in this versatile 46-footer.

  • Guide To Dufour - Four Decades Of Innovation

Guide to Dufour - Four decades of innovation

Dufour

Michel Dufour founded his company to build the Sylpie in 1965, but it was his second design, the Arpege from 1967, that established his reputation as an innovative designer and builder.

Today, the company builds cruiser-racers from 34ft to 45ft and ‘pure’ cruisers from 32ft to 50ft. Most of the hulls are designed by Umberto Felci and the interiors styled by Patrick Roseo.

Dufour T7 - One of the smallest centre-cockpit designs widely available, at 22ft. The T7 appeared in 1980 and sold 250 in two years. With two berths in the saloon and two in the aftercabin, reached via the cockpit, the T7 is popular as a family cruiser.

Dufour 27 - With very high freeboard and a window in the hull, this was a distinctive and popular cruiser from 1973. Most sales were in France. Under her semi-flush decks is 15ft 11in headroom and four berths in a very bare, GRP-dominated interior.

Dofour 1800 - Introduced in 1979 in succession to the Dufour 25, this 25-footer sold well – 200 boats were launched in three years of production, with a choice of lifting, shallow, standard or deep-fin keels. She is typical of the middle years of Dofour design: a full-bodied, high-volume hull topped by a square-looking coachroof.

Dufour 28 – A late model from Dufour’s first incarnation, designed by Jaques Faroux, this is still a strikingly modern and good-looking yacht. Performance and handling are acceptable if she is kept upright, but she’s not ideal for heavy-weather passage-making. She was remarkable for her time (1983) in having two aft cabins in an overall length of just 29ft.

Dufour 2800 – Successor to the 27 in 1978, this comfortable, docile family cruiser was the second most popular Dufour of all time: 1,300 were built over six years. At the time her looks were modern and refreshing - she effectively re-established Michel Dufour’s reputation for forward thinking.

Dufour 30 Classic – Simplicity is the essence of this entry-level cruiser, launched in the late 1990s. She is quick under full canvas, easy to handle, close-winged and fairly well balanced to boot. The rig, which supports a fairly large mainsail and a small, non-overlapping jib, was rather lightly built for serious offshore work. The cockpit is well laid out, with all the essentials within easy reach of the helm – a bonus for short-handed sailing.

Dufour 31 – Another highly successful model, selling more than 900 from 1973 onwards, the most striking feature is her clipper bow. Like many Dufour yachts she was innovative for her time, with a spacious, six-berth interior (including a quarter berth and a dinette double) and a 1.9m headroom.

Dufour 32 Classic – The 32 Classic was launched in 1988 and quickly gained reputation as a comfortable cruising yacht and remained in production until 2004. The sailplan is moderate, with an overlapping genoa, giving good average performance under sail for a modern cruiser.

Dufour 3800 – This masthead-rigged fast cruiser was the replacement for the 31, launched in 1979 and designed by German Frers. Despite being an elegant boat with far less plastic interior and sparkling performance, sales were only moderate at 300.

Dufour 4800 – Launched in 1981, this 35 footer from Dufour was a substantially different creation to the company’s earlier models. Looking very much like a grown-up 3800, she could accommodate up to nine people, maintaining the French tradition for maximum crew berths. She had, in effect, an early manifestation of an owner’s suite, with the heads and double berth forward of the main bulkhead.

Dufour 34 – A sparkling performer which scooped the European Yacht of the Year award. This Umberto Felci design from 2002 sports a fine, deep iron keel and a slim but very deep rudder, set on a sleek hull that slips through the water with the minimum of fuss and effort.

Dufour 35 – Not Michel Dufour’s most attractive creation, this flush-decked, beamy boat from 1972 nonetheless managed sales of 450, thanks largely to the enormous amount of space below desks and good performance under sail.

Dufour 35 Classic – Well-balanced and quick, the 35 Classic is one of the lightest cruisers in her class, displacing just 4.5 tons. But she’s sturdy too – Dufour did not skimp on build quality. A combination of moderate freeboard, pleasing sheerline, low coachroof and reverse transom make her easy on the eye.

Opinions on Dufour?

  • Add to quote

I haven't seen a lot here said about Dufour Yachts. I am researching a possible boat purchase in the next 1-2 years. They look pretty. I would be looking at a recent used model. Good? Bad?

dufour yachts reputation

Dufours generally have a reputation of being a "cut above" the mainstream, and the recent models are good looking boats as you say. Dufour has been around a long time.. some of their older models weren't that stylish but still generally had good reputation for build quality.

dufour yachts reputation

The only Dufour I've ever examined closely was a Dufour 40 about four years ago at a boat show. The low lifelines, lack of through-bolted backing plates, indifferently gasketed, HUGE sail locker seat lids, lack of padeyes and various other shortcomings made me very suspicious of the "Lloyd's Ocean A Class" rating it supposed had. While adequate for lake, coastal and fair-weather passage, which, to be honest, is going to comprise 95% of most of the prospective owners' on the water activities, I didn't think it safe to do real offshore sailing. But they are very pretty, stylish vessels. By contrast, Alex's 40 footer (and I have no need to suck up to Alex), while about as light a boat as you can safely get at that length, had far stronger, safer and better construction, the details of which I'm sure he has provided. Yet they are both identically rated "ocean performance cruisers". It's like comparing 15-20 year old Beneteaus with today's offerings: they are playing to a customer base that doesn't really like sailing much, in my opinion, while the French boats of 1990 or prior could take the conditions actually found around France. This is not a critique along the lines of "old boats are better". Frequently, they aren't, and certainly J-Boats, some South African and Australian/N.Z. builders, Swan and Moody make great, strong boats I would take anywhere, but "anywhere" is not where the marketing department really wants these boats to go, in my opinion.

I would have to agree with Val on this one. The older Dufours were fairly well built boats. The newest Dufours, such as the 40 and 34, were built for speed and built light. Most of those are in Europe, as when they were introduced the Euro went thru the roof against the US dollar and they went up about 30% in a few months, pretty much taking them out of the US equation. I was considering a Dufour 34 when I ended up with the Catalina 34. Not as well built, but fast and could have worked for my uses. The dollar/Euro equation made that decision for me and from what I have seen, I made the right decision. The Dufour Gib Sea, which was the bottom of the Bene equation and Dufours entry level boat was very lightly built. I have sailed on the 33 and 37. The 37 was a fun sail, but the sail plan was very light. No traveler, very lightly built. The holding tank was a 5 gallon clear jug behind a door in the head. Easy to see how full it was, but very distasteful. The 33 was not a good sailing boat. They called the one I sailed on Eileen because it definitely leaned to starboard big time. Not a good sailing boat at all. Most everything on the Gib Seas was screwed in and many of the screws were popping out. Add to that the fact that Gib Sea no longer lasts and the equation is set. Buy an old one or go home.

Buy an older one, stay away from the new ones... And go read this Thay are pretty and all, but....anyway, nowadays, alll boats suck...really

Hey, not all boats suck today. CD and I have our Catalinas and you have your sled. That is at least 3 good ones. Tom

Dufour 32 – impressive new smaller yacht

  • Rupert Holmes
  • February 3, 2022

There are few options for those wanting a new boat in this size range, so Rupert Holmes travelled to La Rochelle to put the Dufour 32 through its paces

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

Dufour is one of the few yards that has maintained a constant presence at the smaller end of the new yacht market and with the launch of the Dufour 32 is making an effort to stand out from the competition.

This model is aimed at a more active and younger audience, as can be seen from promotional images that show a wing-foiling board stowed on the guardrails.

The hull and deck are those of the 30ft 8in Dufour 310 from 2014, with minor restyling at the bow. There are, however, changes that update the original and give this boat a different character.

The biggest of these is swapping from twin rudders and twin wheels to a single rudder and tiller steering. The Dufour 32 interior fit out is also simplified relative to the 310, which had a complex interior with many small components that were time-consuming to fabricate and expensive to fit. These combined changes reduce displacement by 500kg, making for a lighter and faster boat, especially in light airs.

We tested hull number 1, which was very much a prototype intended to test a number of novel ideas, some of which are being further developed before the model goes into full production. The finished results are due to be unveiled on the first production boat.

Light floods the saloon and there’s good ventilation, though the prototype lacks easy-access stowage. Photo: Christophe Breschi

Hull design for the Dufour 32 is by Umberto Felci, with maximum beam carried aft and chines, but a lot of flare aft above the waterline, giving relatively low wetted surface area for speed in light airs. It’s not very different from the very latest designs, with the exception that the forward sections are a little narrower, which reduces form stability and volume in the forecabin.

Single rudder designs have improved enormously since wide-transom boats were first introduced – plenty of today’s powerful racing yachts achieve good control with a single rudder, for instance. However, part of this improvement is gained by tucking the blade well under the hull, where it operates clear of the disturbed water near the transom. However, the position of the aft cabin berth means that’s not an option for this boat.

Nevertheless, the single tiller arrangement suits this boat far better than the twin wheels of the previous model, which represented unnecessary complication, weight and expense on a boat of this size. It also means the helm position is no longer pushed right aft against the rail at the transom. Instead, you can sit further forward where the sheets, halyards and reefing lines are all within reach. Unlike most tiller steered boats, the setup allows for a proper below-decks autopilot. This is far easier to use, more powerful and reliable than a regular tiller pilot.

Dufour 32 verdict

The past couple of decades have seen huge leaps forward in yacht design. Yet it’s very hard to produce a boat of this size at a price the market will bear, to the extent that some builders see them as loss leaders that are necessary to introduce new buyers to the market.

The problem is the shop floor time associated with installing engines, electrical systems, plumbing, even keels and deck fittings, is almost identical for a 31ft boat as for a 38- or 40-footer. Dufour therefore has to be credited for maintaining a presence in this part of the market. There are many owners who do not need a larger vessel than this and it would be a shame if they were not able to enjoy the benefits of a new boat and design advances.

The ease of sailing a smaller boat, and the relative lack of hassle, are important factors in the Dufour 32’s favour. Throughout the test the boat was fun to sail and easy to handle with only two of us aboard, even though the pilot was not in use and we used the Code Zero and spinnaker.

While I didn’t get to sail the boat in a brisk breeze, light airs can expose flaws in a design just as much as gusty conditions. The taller rig and Code Zero were clear advantages in this respect, but also showed the boat is easily driven with no undue vices.

New Dufour 48 yacht – The Freedom of the outside world

new-dufour-48-yacht-the-freedom-of-the-outside-world

The Dufour brand is continuing on its course to complete its range and announces the arrival of the Dufour 48 . A luxury sailing yacht of almost 15 metres . The aim of this new model is to create that unforgettable sailing experience.

The Dufour shipyard is committed to maintaining its DNA : building boats that combine performance and comfort to offer an exceptional living environment and unrivalled pleasure at the helm. Instinctive sailing, a return to the ocean, a reconnection with oneself…

More Informations

A yacht designed for outdoor living

Elegance clearly goes without saying, and with the Dufour 48 , the brand is demonstrating its desire to offer future owners a yacht geared towards outdoor life and reconnecting with the ocean. The innovative design by naval architect Umberto Felci of Felci Yachts Design will win you over. In addition to the comfort of life on board, the new features presented by the Dufour 48 promise a boating experience where the feeling you get under sail will be a delight.

~ TWO COCKPITS

Like her predecessors, the Dufour 48 offers plenty of space in the aft cockpit. Two cockpit tables have been installed, guaranteeing remarkable day-to-day comfort.

But that’s not all: the major innovation on the Dufour 48 is a second cockpit forward. And for this new cockpit, dedicated upholstery combining comfort and style has been designed.

~ AN EXTERIOR GALLEY

As you know, the most popular option from Dufour – apart from the navigation equipment – is the plancha grill installed on the aft platform. This area has been redesigned to provide even more space for future owners. In addition, new equipment has been added to transform the grill area into a genuine outdoor kitchen.

~ MODERN LINES & DESIGN

In order to provide the best possible replacement for the Dufour 470, radical changes have been made for the Dufour 48 . More modern lines have been imagined for this new model. The yacht’s glazing has also been given a facelift.

The coachroof has been fitted with large, full-length windows, and to complete the picture, a large number of opening hatches.

First-class comfort

Beyond the exterior layout, the interior of the Dufour 48 has been designed to guarantee the incomparable comfort offered by the Dufour brand. Once again, interior designer Ardizio Design has worked hard to make the new model as aesthetically pleasing as she is comfortable.

~ A BRIGHT INTERIOR

Aboard the new Dufour 48 , the philosophy used for previous models has been retained. The interior space has never been as bright as in this new model. The coachroof windows provide constant, diffused light along their entire length. Daylight can therefore illuminate the entire saloon and galley area. Also, when the forward cockpit seats are not installed, they reveal a large window that provides even more light inside the boat.

~ A COMFORTABLE OWNER’S CABIN

The owner’s cabin offers ample space to move about freely. The island bed and furnishings promise a luxurious and comfortable environment. Numerous stowage compartments in the cabin ensure perfect organization, greatly simplifying your daily life aboard this new Dufour 48 sailboat.

~ SEVERAL CONFIGURATIONS

As with the Dufour 44 , the new Dufour 48 is available in several versions for the interior. Dedicated and optimised saloon tables have been designed for their respective three- and four-cabin versions. The galley is available in a forward or lateral version. The storage spaces have also been optimised to offer perfect stowage organisation.

COMMENTS

  1. Boat Review: Dufour 360

The Dufour 360 is a well-tweaked version of the Dufour 350, and the changes are quite worthwhile. Dufour has always been a step above many standard production boats in fit and finish quality, and the 360 is no exception. The joinery is precise, the wood grains are quite attractive, and little touches like airlifts on lockers abound.

  2. Dufour 37 Review: When Small Feels Big

Dufour Yachts is in in the process of refreshing their entire line of sleek sailboats and the latest to launch is the Dufour 37 which replaces the popular Dufour 360. The new from-scratch design is focused on generating ample social spaces on a compact 33-foot platform and offers spirited sailing to boot. Above: A 2023 Dufour 37 sailboat.

  3. Dufour 425 GL: solid, spacious & ocean capable

Dufour began as builders of fast mid-range cruisers and has kept that standing despite a few ups and downs. Under the ownership of Olivier Poncin, Dufour bought Gib'Sea in 1998 and continued some of the Gib'Sea range under the Dufour name. Ben Sutcliffe-Davies, Marine Surveyor, member of the Yacht Brokers Designers & Surveyors Association ...

  4. Boat Reviews: The Dufour 470 and Dufour 61

The prolific French builder Dufour has added two new models, the 470 and flagship 61, to update its range of performance-cruiser sailboats. By Mark Pillsbury. March 2, 2022. Dufour 470 Jon Whittle. In a year disrupted by pandemic-related workforce distractions, supply-chain woes and an overhaul of its woodshop, Dufour Yachts, one of France ...

  5. Dufour 390: 'Responsive, fun & forgiving to sail'

Dufour 390: 'Responsive, fun & forgiving to sail' Creating boats that stand out from the competition can be a challenge for builders of modern family cruising yachts. That means buyers have to scratch beneath the surface to home in on the one that best suits their needs. Do a little scratching, however, and the differences soon appear.

  6. Boat Review: Dufour 61

Conclusion. Dufour is known for building boats that sail well, and they have lived up to that reputation here. Add in all the luxury features, the living-large accommodation spaces and a competitive price for a boat this size, and the Dufour 61 is a yacht that demands attention. Specifications. 7. Dufour 41: Top 10 Best Best Nominee

This new 41 comes quickly on the heels of the Dufour 37, one of SAIL 's Top 10 Best Boats of 2023. Both draw their DNA from their bigger sister the 470 launched two years ago, with the same sheer line and chine that enables the boat to carry maximum volume forward on a narrower profile under the waterline.

  8. Dufour 41 Review: Innovative Luxury Sailing Yacht

The Dufour 41's large hull windows mimic the ports on catamarans which bring oodles of light inside. A hard chine runs the length of the hull down low from bow to transom and the forward sections are very full. The freeboard is 16% higher and her decks are up to 30% wider than on her predecessor, the Dufour 412, which launched seven years ago.

  9. Dufour 460 GL Sailboat Review

The 460 was designed by Umberto Felci, Dufour's go-to naval architect, who has built his reputation on yachts that sail very well. We tested the boat in light airs of only 3 to 4 knots on a mellow Chesapeake Bay. Yet the performance was still impressive: The boat had little trouble sailing as fast as the wind on a closehauled course, making ...

  10. Guide to Dufour

Like many Dufour yachts she was innovative for her time, with a spacious, six-berth interior (including a quarter berth and a dinette double) and a 1.9m headroom. 11. Dufour 44 first look: Space for sailing, sunbathing and socialising

Yacht design never seems to stand still, including with the new Dufour 44. Although Dufour's last 40-something footer, the 430, was brand new in 2019, the lines are already beginning to look dated and a trifle pokey in comparison to the latest fashions. ... 12. Dufour Yachts

Somebody Else said: I looked at a new Dufour at a broker's a few years ago. The hardware and its layout seemed adequate for a cocktail cruise down the harbor so long as it didn't blow over about 8 knots. Thanks all. Curious, what about the layout, design and hardware made it seem unsuitable for anything more than that?

  13. Dufour Yachts

Dufour Yachts is a French sailboat manufacturer which was founded in 1964 by naval architect and engineer Michel Dufour. 14. Opinions on Dufour?

Dufours generally have a reputation of being a "cut above" the mainstream, and the recent models are good looking boats as you say. Dufour has been around a long time.. some of their older models weren't that stylish but still generally had good reputation for build quality. Ron. 1984 Fast/Nicholson 345 "FastForward".

  15. Featured Yacht Dufour 41: A Blend of High Performance and Comfort

Dufour Yachts has built a reputation for manufacturing sailboats of exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. The Dufour 41 carries forward this legacy, assuring buyers of its high-quality construction, durability, and reliability. The use of premium materials and meticulous finishing touches further elevate its desirability in the market.

  16. Boat Review: Dufour 530

The Dufour 530 is available with a 75hp Yanmar diesel and saildrive or a 110hp Volvo Penta engine and straight shaft. Our test boat was equipped with the more powerful engine, and at wide-open throttle and 3,000 rpm, we motored at 8.2 knots on flat water. We found an economical cruising speed of 6.8 knots at 2,400 rpm.

  17. NEW Sailing yacht Dufour 41

The space aboard this Luca Ardizio-designed 12-metre yacht, is perfectly optimised to ensure comfort both under way and in port. With a length of 12.75 metres and a beam of 4.3 metres, the Dufour 41 can sleep up to 10 people, depending on the layout chosen.
