This time 12 Knots invites you to discover the most traveled part of the world – a glorious journey around the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
It is a long, lively, occasionally challenging and endlessly fascinating trip off from Gibraltar, one of the fabled Pillars of Hercules, up the coast of Spain, along the Riviera, to the islands of Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, then Croatia, the Greek islands and way-way to Istanbul in Turkey.
Sailing along the coastlines as wild and diverse as anything you encounter before will give you a real insight in this world – while probing through layers of traditions and culture, ancient and modern, rich and poor, fake and authentic.
Be open to surprise and serendipity, be willing to get lost and appreciate each routine’s uniqueness.
The Mediterranean Sea is an intercontinental one that separates Europe from Africa. The Strait of Gibraltar connects it to the Atlantic Ocean on the west; the Dardanelles and the Bosporus – to the Black Sea on the east; and long man-made Suez Canal – to the Red Sea in the south-east.
Renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is a great alternative to a standard cruise on a liner – this way you will feel the true freedom and get unique experience as a real traveler! Spain, Croatia, Italy, France, Montenegro, Turkey, Greece, Malta - wherever you want to go, 12 Knots will help you to charter a yacht that will definitely meet your needs, type of vacation and budget. "The cradle of civilization" offers a huge number of attractions. Secluded bays with paradise beaches and lively cities, fishing villages with colorful boats and modern marinas filled with premium yachts. There is no other part of the world where you may find such a great gastronomic, architectural and nature diversity.
Renting a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea will give you chance to see many countries of this area in a different perspective. Instead of visiting standard touristic places you’ll be able to visit wide variety of little-known places far from the standard routes. For example, the Cote d'Azur is not only the luxurious ports of Saint-Tropez, Monaco and Nice with luxury restaurants, casinos and a great concentration of mega yachts. Here you may also find little fishing villages, where in a family restaurant you can dine on freshly caught fish with white or rose wine. Spain is not only Ibiza discos and beaches of the Costa Brava, full of tourists and pareo vendors, but also quiet harbors with amazingly clear water, where you can enjoy unusual solitude.
Mediterranean yacht charters is the opportunity to do what you want. Every day you can taste local versions of Mediterranean dishes that differ in terms of cooking method, spices and sauces. Without any haste, you may stroll among the ancient ruins and climb the walls of beautifully preserved ancient fortresses, offering spectacular views on the sea - exactly the same as hundreds of years ago.
Your vacations will be much more interesting if you choose to rent a yacht. The Mediterranean coast length is over 40 thousand km, 21 countries and three continents with different coastal relief. Here you can find almost everything: volcanos, starch-white and coal-black lava sand, pebbles and shell rocks.
For photographers, video bloggers and movie lovers, renting a yacht in the Mediterranean also gives the opportunity to see a lot of interesting things – in a quite unique way. Among the places that must be visited is the Italian town of Portofino, where Antonioni / Wenders shot one of the episodes of the romantic drama “Behind the Clouds”. Also don’t miss the Amalfi Coast, which is often served as a backdrop for films about beautiful life. One of the most scenic views here is Positano village with its colorful houses that cascade down right to the blue water.
Those who love nature and silence should include in the list one of the secluded Greek islands with bicycles and boats. You can rest peacefully on some beaches of the eastern coast of Sicily, and find a great combination of warm turquoise of the sea and white fine soft sand. If you are getting bored with peace and tranquility, you may always get off the anchor and set up sails to the place where life is in full swing - like Ibiza, in Barcelona, ??Monaco.
One of the main features of the Mediterranean region is its relative compactness and high dencity of different attractions. History and architecture, museums, nature, beach attractions and water sports, shops, amusement parks - all of these can be in just one sailing vacation.
Mediterranean bareboat yacht charter gives you a chance to visit places that are almost inaccessible from land, because they have neither a parking lot nor a safe trail to the sea. You may find plenty of secluded coves in rocky shores of Turkey and Greece, where every spot can be your personal secret place, whit not risk of finding another company.
Dazzling white streets of the small coastal towns in Greece or red tiled roofs of Montenegro, contrasting with the huge mountains. Malta’s cultural microcosm, where European, Arab and African intertwined, and where, in addition to the magnificent Gothic and Baroque buildings, there are prehistoric sanctuaries, the secrets of which have not yet been solved. Turkey, with places not touched by resorts, where you can clearly feel the breath of antiquity. All this can be points of interest during your yacht charter in the Mediterranean Sea!
For active travelers who value independence versus staying in one spot, decision to rent a boat in the Mediterranean Sea is definitely a solution. If you plan an ordinary trip with an accuracy of one day and hotels bookings in advance, then yacht gives you a chance to improvise and change your plan. Renting a yacht is two in one option: accommodation and transportation at the same time.
It is not surprising that Mediterranean yacht charters are in great demand and one of the most popular sailing destinations offered by 12 knots. Most luxury boat rentals have five or six staterooms or cabins in various configurations, including twins, double, queen, and king beds. On most charter yachts, you can customize the configuration of the cabins dependent on the number of guests. This will allow you to take between six and 12 charter guests. Depending on the charter vessel, staterooms may include ensuite bathrooms, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, private study areas, and walk-in wardrobes. Larger mega yachts may have additional cabins for staff members like nannies, security, or personal butlers.
It depends on the yacht. For example, you could ask for a master cabin that is separate from your yacht charter guests if you want enhanced levels of privacy. If you are one big family, you can request a yacht with cabins closer together. If sleeping arrangements, including the placement of cabins, are an important consideration, then let your charter broker know.
Of course, kids are welcome aboard a yacht charter in the Mediterranean. Most yachts welcome nannies, too, with some larger superyachts having additional staff rooms specifically for nannies. A yacht charter offers a wonderful family vacation. Onboard amenities, including swimming pools and cinema rooms, are guaranteed to keep youngsters entertained, as too are the water toys, such as snorkeling gear, inflatables, fishing gear, and kayaks. With advanced notice, the crew can also arrange fun, kid-friendly activities, such as treasure hunts or fun fancy-dress parties.
The crew quarters are separate from guests. Charter crew are highly professional and are trained to provide exceptional service levels with the utmost discretion. They will be as visible as you want them to be.
The best time to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean is between May and October.
Summer yacht charters in the Mediterranean are most sought after in July or August, but June after the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix is typically viewed as the season’s start date. Some charterers prefer off-peak season trips to avoid crowds and kids and to enjoy the warm, quieter waters of September and October. Let our yacht charter brokers know your dates and budget, and we will do the hard work for you, including finding the right luxury boat for your dates and desired experiences.
It will depend on where you go, but these are a guide to air temperatures on a Mediterranean superyacht charter in France/Italy:
It will depend on where you go, but below is a guide to water temperatures on a Mediterranean superyacht charter in France/Italy:
How long you charter a private yacht in the Mediterranean is up to you and will depend on your cruising itinerary, but an average yacht charter in the Med will be seven days. Northrop & Johnson’s charter specialists have booked luxury yacht charters for a week, 10 days, two weeks, and often longer. Contact our charter experts if you want to book a yacht vacation in the Mediterranean.
If you know the superyacht and the crew you would like to book next summer, it is imperative that you reserve your spot at least six months in advance. Popular boat types, like a Ferretti or Sunseeker charter yacht, are always in high demand. Last-minute yacht charters are also available and often at a competitive price; however, this often means forgoing your first boat of choice. Contact a yacht charter broker at Northrop & Johnson and let them find your ideal boat.
The cost of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean with Northrop & Johnson starts at about $50,000 per week and will include the charter yacht and crew. You will then be charged for additional costs, including fuel, provisions, marina fees, and other expenses in your advanced provisioning allowance (APA). For larger and newer superyachts, you can pay up to $500,000 per week, not including the APA .
The Advanced Provisioning Allowance acts as a bank account and is designed to cover expenses that cannot be fixed in advance, such as food and drink, fuel, and berthing fees. The APA is typically around 25 to 35%. of the yacht charter fee and is paid before the charter commences. The captain is responsible for logging all APA expenses, and you can view the expenses at any time during your boat charter. Any funds left in the APA at the end of your charter holiday are immediately refunded to you.
Depending on your itinerary, these are some of the most accessible airports for easy arrival for your private yacht charter:
The crew aboard a yacht charter is there to ensure you have the best possible charter experience. Whether cruising in France , Italy , Croatia , Spain , Greece , or Turkey , the yacht crew are there to make your yachting holiday one to remember.
Northrop & Johnson does not handle bareboat yacht charters. All our superyacht charters include a captain, or skipper, and a crew who will make your yacht charter vacation the best experience possible in the Mediterranean in the heart of Europe. A typical crew will include a captain, deck crew, interior crew, and a private chef. Additional crew may include a sommelier, personal fitness trainer, and beauty therapists. The exact roles of the crew will depend on the size and type of your vessel, but you can expect:
Ultimately, the crew will strive to make your experience enjoyable and stress-free by handling even the smallest details during your luxury yacht charter.
Yes, the menu is completely up to you. You and all guests will provide a preference sheet prior to embarking so the chef and interior crew can provision and have all of your favorites aboard the yacht.
“As a chef, I believe in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create unique and flavorful dishes that are tailored to my guests’ palate. I take pride in creating truly memorable dining experiences that are sure to please.” Chef onboard a private yacht
After you’ve decided on the destination and dates and even the yachts and itineraries you’re interested in, our charter brokers will take it from there. Contact a Northrop & Johnson charter broker and we will discuss all your wants and needs with you, and then we will send you a short list of available yachts for charter that fit your criteria. Once we have found the right yacht for you, we will draw up a MYBA contract and work with the yacht’s charter manager to make your Mediterranean yacht charter vacation a reality. We will handle everything from organizing the payments, the APA, and even the arrival and departure.
When chartering a yacht in the Mediterranean, you will need to sign a charter agreement or contract. This contract will outline the terms and conditions of your yacht charter, including the duration of the trip and details of any additional services that you may require. The agreement will also stipulate how much you will be expected to pay in terms of the charter fee and may include other important information such as insurance policies, liability waivers, and maintenance requirements.
You will pay Northrop & Johnson directly for your yacht charter, including the APA.
The yacht charter broker takes a fee of 15% of the total charter fee.

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, more: sample prices - tivat sailing itinerary - wind & weather - marina details, sample prices in, 6-day sailing itinerary from tivat.
Surrounded by mountains and with crystal clear waters, Kotor bay is one of the most beautiful places to sail – particularly when the sun is shining and there are a few knots of wind in your sails. It feels majestic to wind your way along this gigantic fjord and out to the Adriatic or Mediterranean Sea. There’s so many beautiful old towns to discover – most over a thousand years old – but also remote islands to look over as you sail by, and brand-new sailing facilities which have been built over recent years to turn this place into something of a millionaire’s playground.
It’s only a six-day itinerary because you’re likely only going to check in late on Saturday afternoon, so, after getting provisions on board for the week ahead, you’re unlikely to get much purposeful sailing done – so our itinerary sets off on Sunday morning, when you’re fresh and raring to get the boat out! You’ll need to get the boat back to Tivat on the Friday night, so that you can disembark first thing on Saturday morning to give the team time to clean and changeover the boat before someone else takes her on an another adventure next week. But there’s plenty of sailing to be done before then.
This itinerary is 102 nautical miles in total, which means an average of 17 nautical miles a day – which, given that yachts and catamarans can go upwards of 5 knots (nautical miles an hour) means that it should only involve three or four hours of meaningful sailing each day, giving you time to sail at a more leisurely pace, or to spend time exploring the start and end point each day.
From Tivat, you need to head northwards up the fjord, through the narrow channel, to get to the final part of the Kotor bay. Pay attention to big cruise ships before you work your way down the channel, though they generally only travel before 9am and after 4pm, so they shouldn’t cause us any problems this week. Once you're through the channel, you'll pass 'Our lady on the rock' (the church with the blue dome). Legend has it that this is an artificial island which has built up over time – it’s considered good luck to throw a rock at or on it to thank God for getting home safely. It started as a pile of pebbles from grateful sailors, and has slowly built up what it is today.
From there, head east and then south towards majestic Kotor, where you'll find the marina at the very end of the bay, or you can moor up in Marina Muo, just south and west of the old town. We love Kotor, and it's a brilliant place to explore!
We'll sail back to Our lady on the Rocks for another glimpse, then it's a case of nipping back down the channel towards Tivat, then South-west to the Mediterranean, following the coastline round on your starboard side, passing the monstruous new Portonovi marina, and heading round to moor up in Herceg Novi.
Situated at the opening of Kotor bay, Herceg Novi (meaning ‘new castle’) is most famous for being the first line of defence for the area – you’ll notice as you sail by that there are castles and fortifications galore, as the Ottomans, Venetians, Spanish, French, Russians and Turks (amongst many others) sought to protect the bay from intruders. Given the number of times it’s changed hands, the fortifications can’t have been all that successful... Nowadays, it’s a quiet tourist town which has a bohemian and arty atmosphere, with a number of mud spas, a good range of restaurants, and a livelier nightlife than you might expect.
Budva is the most popular tourist town in Montenegro - it’s 35 beaches and 11km of fine sand luring in all the locals, but, nowadays, plenty of international tourists too. There’s been a lot of recent developments for tourists – such as ugly hotels and high-rise flats – which have taken some of the sheen off the place, but this is also one of the oldest settlements in the whole of the Mediterranean, and the old town an interesting and exciting place to explore – parts of it are over 2,500 years old!
During high season, there’s plenty happening in the evenings in Budva, and the land-lubbing tourists create a party atmosphere which is hard not to get infected by!
If time is on your side, there’s an option to stop at Petrovac for a lunchtime excursion (but it depends upon how much you drank last night, or whether you went to the beach or shopping this morning). Petrovac is an idyllic village with a great beach and many, many old and beautiful buildings. It’s very popular with the locals because there is a direct road through the mountains to get from the capital city of Montenegro, Podgorica, and it’s a place where people come to de-stress. The church on the small island was hand-built by a sailor who was shipwrecked on the island one stormy night, as a ‘thanks’ to God.
After sun-bathing awhile, it’s time to admire the unspoilt coastline and mountains from the boat again as we head down to our stopping point for the night – the important and historic town of Bar. It’s important because it’s Montenegro’s main sea-port, and welcomes ferries and cargo ships from across the Med. It’s historic because it has a fantastic old town – this one is slightly different that the other old towns though: it’s been uninhabited for centuries, which means that it is a genuine snapshot of how life used to be here. It's certainly worth a look. Bar is also famous for producing the best olives in Montenegro, and for having an olive tree that is over 2,000 years old!
Budva is over 2,500 years old - the settlement at Lustica bay is just under 2 years old. It’s a giant first-class development near Radovici, which will see the building of roads, houses, hotels, shopping centres, a golf course, a brand-new marina (with all the trimmings), and all sorts of other things a village needs. All from scratch, and on the basis that this is one of the most beautiful bays in the whole of Montenegro. The marina opened in July 2018, and will be fully functioning for the 2019 season.
Lustica bay is a luxurious if slightly artificial place to spend the night, and to mix with the well to do sailors of Montenegro.
Today is a sail of 16 nautical miles, but, oddly enough, you can make the same journey from Lustica to Tivat on foot in about an hour, because it’s only about a 5km walk. Walking is no fun, however, so we’ll go by sea. We’ll head Southwards out of Lustica bay, then follow the headland round on our starboard side, and re-enter the Kotor bay area, passing the crazy circular Fort Mamula (or Lastavica) on the way in. Fort Mamula takes up 90% of the island and was built in 1853 by the Austrians. Since then, it’s been a fort, a military base, and, during World War II, a concentration camp for opponents of Mussolini’s fascist regime. After being abandoned and uninhabited, in 2016 planning permission was granted for a developer to transform it into (another) luxury resort, complete with multiple restaurants, a beach club, a spa and a nightclub.
Following the coastline round, we’re heading back past Herceg Novi and East towards Tivat, where we'll make ourselves at home again in Porto Montenegro marina. Take the yacht to the fuel berth at the marina to fill up the tanks, then head back to where you found the boat on the first day and berth the yacht one last time. Tie off the lines, then high-five the rest of the crew for a job well done!
The yacht charter company will inspect the hull tonight, so it’s important you get the boat back to the marina before 6pm – but you won’t have to disembark until 9am on Saturday morning. If you’ve not yet had chance to explore Tivat or Kotor, then now is a great time to do that – the view from the castle above Kotor will seem especially poignant now that you’ve conquered the sea below. And then sadly it’s time to head back to the airport. When you get home then you can head to PlainSailing.com and start planning your next adventure!
Once out in the Mediterranean, you can expect decent Force 3 to 4 winds heading up and down the coast. If you stick close to the mainland, you’ll notice the mistral winds which race towards land during the day (the sun heats the land, which heats the air above it, which, in turn, rises, and sucks air in from over the sea), and out to sea at night. Further out from the coast and you’ll meet trade winds which rush down the Adriatic towards Greece, and which will ensure you can make quick progress South, before beating your way back up North.
In winter, there’s no such thing as a prevailing wind, and you’re as likely to meet cold winds from the Alps and the Dolomites as you are the warm tropical stormy winds which arrive from the South of the Med.
Porto Montenegro, once a naval marina, now markets itself an ‘exclusive marina and yachting paradise’. It has space for over 450 boats, and also boasts the worlds longest berth, able to accommodate superyachts upto 250m in length (if they’re still called superyachts when they get to that size?). It was built in 2009 and people flock here to be part of the ‘in’ crowd. It has a range of fine-dining restaurants, but it is also under a kilometre from the town of Tivat.
If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend this place that is close to the marina: Hotel San .

Quaint white washed villages, windswept islands, clear blue waters, protected harbours and pristine beaches — Greece is a yachting playground for good reason. There are a wealth of places in Greece to discover on a yacht charter, from iconic islands like Santorini to lesser-visited petite islands and exploring the coast of the mainland. On a Greek yacht charter, you can find yourself the sole vessel moored in front of a quiet beach you can only reach by boat, dance the day away at a Mykonos beach club or visit historic archaeological sites. No matter your interests, stepping on board a private yacht in the Greek islands can take you there.
From the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter.
With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches.
Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas.
Sailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that it ’ s no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of Septses , where you ’ ll find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries. The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance .
Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is totally devoid of cars and exudes an old world charm — not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt.
About an hour from Athens, Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with neoclassical architecture, upscale cafes and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands, Sphairia and Kalaureia , which are connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon — dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history.
A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over Poros town. Poros offers a winning blend of natural beauty, historical significance and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter.
Further away from mainland Greece are the Dodecanese Islands, which are actually closer to the coast of Turkey than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos, Patmos and Rhodes, to name a few. There ’ s also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along Turkey ’ s stunning coastline.
With 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty.
There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below.
Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water.
Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene beaches and a bustling harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is winning of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the Tunnel of Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island.
Nature lovers will want to hike up to the Potami waterfalls or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lemonakia beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will want to make to visit the Samos Wine Museum in Malagari to learn about — and sample — the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer.
Located off the west coast of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands comprise seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way. The islands here are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s.
Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey.
On the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond.
The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas.
This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge.
On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach.
The Peloponnese Peninsula, located in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural beauty and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are renown for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius.
A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches.
Located in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos, Skopelos , Alonissos and Skyros. The island of Skopelos is somewhat famous as being one of the main filming locations for the film Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep. Skopelos is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of natural beauty was showcased in the movie .
The nearby island of Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including numerous underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts more than 60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters. The island of Skyros is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian ponies.
While the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display.
Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night.
Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect harbour and long stretches of beach.
