History and Culture

Ancient ruins at sunset in charter location greece

The Mediterranean sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bordering more than 22 different countries, and over 3,000 islands, the largest two being the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia.  Its name comes from two Latin words: 'Medius” (Middle) and “Terra” (Earth/Soil), roughly translated as the center of the Earth, and the sea itself is thought to be more than 5 million years old.

In terms of Mediterranean culture, there isn't a one size fits all approach — each and every country in the region has their own. But we can say that there are some overarching themes: an appreciation of the finer things in life being one of them: of nature and of cuisine.

Types of Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

A luxury crewed  yacht rental vacation in the Mediterranean is without a doubt the best way to lap up the natural splendor of this magical region, offering you access to a dizzying array of splendid spots far from the typical tourist trail.

With an extensive selection of vessels available to choose from, the perfect yacht for you and your charter party is destined to be out there. Unsure whether a crewed motor yacht charter, sailing yacht charter, or in some cases, a gulet charter will work best for you? We've laid out the main aspects to consider before making a final decision.

Motor Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

range of charter motor yachts docked at portofino, italy

A crewed motor yacht charter  in the Mediterranean is the epitome of luxury. With seven-star amenities and hotel-serviced living coupled with a completely unrivaled level of privacy, it's no wonder a motor yacht has evergreen appeal. Uncover awe-inspiring that are only accessible by boat, and experience what it's like to have your own floating palace.

There is a huge variety of Mediterranean motor yachts available, from 100m superyachts with all the latest charter-focused amenities to small speedy weekend cruisers, or somewhere in between. But do keep in mind when selecting your motor yacht that slips here are in high demand during the summertime, which means it's more likely you will spend time at anchor.

As for yacht types, those with planing hulls are perfect if you want to zip through locations at speed quickly. However, they are usually less stable at anchor.

Displacement and semi-displacement hulls are slower and make up most of the global charter fleet, They are more comfortable, voluminous, and more stable with at anchor stabilizers.

Sailing Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

Selecting a luxury crewed  sailing yacht charter in the Mediterranean is a wonderful choice for guests looking for a slower vacation pace, where you will be wooed by the sailing yacht's old-school charm. Plus, with most sailing conditions in the Mediterranean being extremely favorable, typified by calm seas and light winds (apart from the Meltemi at certain times in Turkey and Greece), this is absolutely a sailing paradise.

And with an extensive selection of catamarans, monohulls and racer sailers available, it won't be difficult to find a charter sailing yacht in the Mediterranean that will meet your requirements.

Gulet Charters in the Mediterranean

Turkish Gulets blue water cruising

In  Turkey  & Croatia you also have an additional charter option: the possibility of renting a gulet  with a full crew. Gulets are traditionally Turkish-built wooden motor sailor yachts which are usually much larger in volume than your average sailing yacht, with an abundance of open-plan living spaces.

Turkish gulet yachts are less expensive than other charter vessels of the same size, and can often offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and can provide a lot of valuable expertise.

You can visit Greek Islands on your Turkish gulet charter vacation, but you will need to embark and disembark in a port in Turkey unless it has a Greek Charter Licence - which is very rare.

Gulets are not available in the West Mediterranean cruising areas.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht in the Mediterranean?

The average price of a motor yacht or sailing yacht rental in the Mediterranean will depend on several factors, including the vessel's age, type, crew, as well as the duration of the vacation and whether it is high or low season.

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in the Mediterranean below;

  • For motor yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, prices can range from $31,541 to $1.6m per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, prices can go from $20,491 to $532,784 weekly, plus expenses

One aspect to keep in mind is that there are important distinctions to be made between the average costs for West Mediterranean and East Mediterranean yachting vacations. While exact costs can vary from yacht to yacht, typically, West Mediterranean yacht charters will involve newer, larger vessels and include a high-quality, international workforce, and therefore tend to usually incur higher prices. Meanwhile, East Mediterranean yacht charters will usually use older vessels and feature highly knowledgeable local crews.

When is the Best Time for Mediterranean Yacht Charters?

Traditional colourful Greek fishing boats in Pythagorion port, Samos island, Greece

The best time for a yachting vacation on the Mediterranean is between May and August, although weather is still pleasant in the shoulder months of April and September, with some East Mediterranean locations experiencing high temperatures well into October (Croatia, Turkey, Greece).

Yacht charter guests in the Mediterranean during these months can expect mellow seas, cloudless skies  long, sunbaked days and low rainfall.

However, if you are looking to evade the crowds and the heat, avoid July and August.

Where Should I Begin My Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

iconic yacht rental destination french riviera

France is by far the most popular starting point for the classic "Mediterranean milk-run charter" route (Saint Tropez to Portofino), with this term coined in the industry to reflect the most celebrated and chicest locations along the Côte d'Azur.

The best place to begin a Mediterranean yacht charter is in Nice for itineraries along the coast and towards the Italian Riviera, with the majority of guests flying into Nice Airport before being chauffeured to its port or Antibes. Cannes Vieux Port (which is a mere 30-minute drive from Nice's Airport) is also popular if beginning further west towards Saint-Tropez .

Ibiza is also a popular starting point for Balearics charters, while Positano and Ajaccio are useful embarkation ports for Amalfi Coast and Corsica yacht charters respectively.

For East Mediterranean itineraries, Athens is a popular choice for charters around Greece's Aegean archipelagos, with the highest concentration of yacht rentals, while superyachts cruising the Ionian and Adriatic Coast tend to be flexible, with charters embarking from any number of popular destinations; from Venice  in Italy down to Corfu  in Greece's Ionian Islands.

Popular Marinas and Moorings in the Mediterranean

There are many marinas in the Mediterranean, but there are some, especially within the French and Italian Riviera that are highly coveted such as St Tropez and Portofino, which means mooring costs in this region in the summer tend to be highest and availability is often extremely limited.

If you would like to spend a night in port while on your charter yacht in the Mediterranean, be sure to make this clear to your crew or your charter broker well in advance, as there is strong competition for slips.

Below is our selection of some of the finest and most popular marinas in the Mediterranean:

French Riviera Marinas

  • Vieux Port de Cannes  and Port Pierre Canto in Cannes, both cater to all sizes of yachts and with 1,200 berths.
  • Port Cogolin  in Saint Tropez, which boasts 1,600 berths for yachts of up to 50m/164ft, and Port Vauban in Antibes, which caters to yachts up to a 165m/541ft LOA.
  • Port de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat , located near the idyllic village of Villefranche-sur-Mer. This marina has 560 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 60m/197ft in length.

Italian Riviera Marinas

  • Marina di Loano , not far from the French border can accommodate 900 vessels up to 77m/252ft in length.
  • Porto Mirabello , in La Spezia caters to yachts of up to 100m/328ft, and a perfect point for exploring the region's jaw-droppingly pretty Cinque Terre.

Where to End a Mediterranean Yacht Charter

Superyachts moored in Bonifacio port in Corsica

Portofino is one of the best places to disembark your Mediterranean yacht charter if you are embarking on the typical week-long yachting vacation along 'the milk run' (incorporating destinations in the French Riviera and Ligurian Coast). Guests usually take a helicopter back to Nice or Genoa airport.

For two-week-long Mediterranean charter vacations, Bonifacio is one of the most popular places to finish a private yacht charter in the Mediterranean due to its outstanding natural beauty. It boasts one of the most stunning port entrances in Europe, bordered by soaring limestone cliffs on one side, and on the other its impressive medieval old town teeters on a hilltop. Upon leaving, guests are chauffeured to nearby Ajaccio international airport.

For East Mediterranean charters, Athens is a popular disembarkation port, as well as Porto Montenegro and Dubrovnik or Split on the Adriatic Coast, all of which offer good transport links with international airports.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Q&A

We advise booking your Mediterranean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Mediterranean.

One of the wonderful aspects about renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is the exceedingly long season. For example in West Mediterranean locations like France, Spain and Italy, the best time to visit is usually from May until September. This balmy weather extends to well into October in East Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

For your Mediterranean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Mediterranean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in for your yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Why: Choose a Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

Mediterranean yacht charter vacations are always by far and away the most popular summer location. You can read hundreds of our client endorsements here . Think the French Riviera, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Sardinia, Spain and Greece. This is where most of the large crewed superyachts are concentrated and this is where also where you will find a huge variety of interesting places and cultures to experience. The Mediterranean (or Med’ for short) has everything. The area covers a large diversity of countries, cultures landscapes and experiences. Yet, the fantastic thing is that they are relatively close together, so you can create convenient and action packed itineraries very easily. On top of this, the yachting infrastructure in Europe is second to none so there are dozens of beautiful marinas filled with beautiful private superyachts and mega yachts that can be chartered as well as all the shops, restaurants, bars and conveniences that you could need. Because of its popularity the Mediterranean has an incredible choice of charter boats available to rent, both motor (power) yachts and sailing yachts, including the ever more widespread large luxury private superyacht charters.

How Much Does it Cost To Charter a Yacht in The Mediterranean?

Mediterranean yacht charter prices vary according to the size, style and age of the yacht. Our luxury superyacht charter yachts rent from 30,000 Euro to over 1,000,000 per week, plus expenses, in the form of an advanced provisioning allowance (APA). Conversely, smaller 'all inclusive' type vacations cost between Euro 15,000 to 50,000 per week. Here is the full list of all the charter yachts and here are the current Mediterranean yachts with special discounted prices .

Timing & Weather: The Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Mediterranean yachting season generally runs from April to the end of October. During the height of the season, in July and August, the climate is warm and sunny and the winds tend to be light. While this is the high season for all tourism, you can still easily avoid onshore tourists while afloat. The weather can also be good during the shoulder seasons.

Tip: Shoulder Season Means Value & Choice

Another good time to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons from April-May and September-October. These periods fall each side of the main summer season when the temperatures are still comfortable. September, for instance, is an underrated time of the year because the weather is usually good (if not too hot) but the sea is at its maximum temperature which is ideal for swimming. At this time there is greater choice of berths and anchorages for your boating vacation and the onshore tourists are not present in their largest numbers.

For one reason or another certain yachts are more popular this year. Taste varies but generally if the yacht is new, stylish, has a proven crew, and offers good value then it be coveted and booked out early in the season. Charter brokers recommendations also increase a charter yacht's popularity as these are based on past performance and feedback. Also brokers often visit the yacht, meet the crew and judge it's condition before offering their advice. Sometimes luxury yachts offer discounted prices in the Mediterranean when, for instance, they have availability in shoulder season or they have a last minute cancellation. Combined with brokers visiting the boats and crew, this is one crucial way we can recommend the best yachts each year. If you would like to see some of this client feedback .

Mediterranean Sailing tips

This time 12 Knots invites you to discover the most traveled  part of the world – a glorious journey around the shores of the  Mediterranean Sea.

It is a long, lively, occasionally challenging and endlessly  fascinating trip off from Gibraltar, one of the fabled Pillars of  Hercules, up the coast of Spain, along the Riviera, to the islands of  Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, then Croatia, the Greek islands and way-way  to Istanbul in Turkey.

Sailing along the coastlines as wild and diverse as anything you  encounter before will give you a real insight in this world – while  probing through layers of traditions and culture, ancient and modern,  rich and poor, fake and authentic.

Be open to surprise and serendipity, be willing to get lost and appreciate each routine’s uniqueness.

The Mediterranean Sea is an intercontinental one that separates  Europe from Africa. The Strait of Gibraltar connects it to the Atlantic  Ocean on the west; the Dardanelles and the Bosporus – to the Black Sea  on the east; and long man-made Suez Canal – to the Red Sea in the  south-east.

Chartering a boat in the Mediterranean

Renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is a  great alternative to a standard cruise on a liner – this way you will  feel the true freedom and get unique experience as a real traveler!  Spain, Croatia, Italy, France, Montenegro, Turkey, Greece, Malta -  wherever you want to go, 12 Knots will help you to charter a yacht that  will definitely meet your needs, type of vacation and budget. "The cradle of civilization" offers a huge number of attractions.  Secluded bays with paradise beaches and lively cities, fishing villages  with colorful boats and modern marinas filled with premium yachts. There  is no other part of the world where you may find such a great  gastronomic, architectural and nature diversity.

Renting a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea will give you  chance to see many countries of this area in a different perspective.  Instead of visiting standard touristic places you’ll be able to visit  wide variety of little-known places far from the standard routes. For  example, the Cote d'Azur is not only the luxurious ports of  Saint-Tropez, Monaco and Nice with luxury restaurants, casinos and a  great concentration of mega yachts. Here you may also find little  fishing villages, where in a family restaurant you can dine on freshly  caught fish with white or rose wine. Spain is not only Ibiza discos and  beaches of the Costa Brava, full of tourists and pareo vendors, but also  quiet harbors with amazingly clear water, where you can enjoy unusual  solitude.

Rent a boat and do what you want

Mediterranean yacht charters is the opportunity to do what you  want. Every day you can taste local versions of Mediterranean dishes  that differ in terms of cooking method, spices and sauces. Without any  haste, you may stroll among the ancient ruins and climb the walls of  beautifully preserved ancient fortresses, offering spectacular views on  the sea - exactly the same as hundreds of years ago.

Your  vacations will be much more interesting if you choose to rent a yacht.  The Mediterranean coast length is over 40 thousand km, 21 countries and  three continents with different coastal relief. Here you can find almost  everything: volcanos, starch-white and coal-black lava sand, pebbles  and shell rocks.

For photographers, video bloggers and movie  lovers, renting a yacht in the Mediterranean also gives the opportunity  to see a lot of interesting things – in a quite unique way. Among the  places that must be visited is the Italian town of Portofino, where  Antonioni / Wenders shot one of the episodes of the romantic drama  “Behind the Clouds”. Also don’t miss the Amalfi Coast, which is often  served as a backdrop for films about beautiful life. One of the most  scenic views here is Positano village with its colorful houses that  cascade down right to the blue water.

Those who love nature and  silence should include in the list one of the secluded Greek islands  with bicycles and boats. You can rest peacefully on some beaches of the  eastern coast of Sicily, and find a great combination of warm turquoise  of the sea and white fine soft sand. If you are getting bored with peace  and tranquility, you may always get off the anchor and set up sails to  the place where life is in full swing - like Ibiza, in Barcelona,  ??Monaco.

Benefits of sailing in the Mediterranean

One of the main features of the Mediterranean region is its  relative compactness and high dencity of different attractions. History  and architecture, museums, nature, beach attractions and water sports,  shops, amusement parks - all of these can be in just one sailing  vacation.

Mediterranean bareboat yacht charter gives you a  chance to visit places that are almost inaccessible from land, because  they have neither a parking lot nor a safe trail to the sea. You may  find plenty of secluded coves in rocky shores of Turkey and Greece,  where every spot can be your personal secret place, whit not risk of  finding another company.

Dazzling white streets of the small  coastal towns in Greece or red tiled roofs of Montenegro, contrasting  with the huge mountains. Malta’s cultural microcosm, where European,  Arab and African intertwined, and where, in addition to the magnificent  Gothic and Baroque buildings, there are prehistoric sanctuaries, the  secrets of which have not yet been solved. Turkey, with places not  touched by resorts, where you can clearly feel the breath of antiquity.  All this can be points of interest during your yacht charter in the  Mediterranean Sea!

For active travelers who value independence  versus staying in one spot, decision to rent a boat in the Mediterranean  Sea is definitely a solution. If you plan an ordinary trip with an  accuracy of one day and hotels bookings in advance, then yacht gives you  a chance to improvise and change your plan. Renting a yacht is two in  one option: accommodation and transportation at the same time.

It is not surprising that Mediterranean yacht charters are in great  demand and one of the most popular sailing destinations offered by 12  knots. Sailing in this region is a dream for many people, while we make  it a reality. We offer bareboat and crewed yachts for charter from  classic Turkish gulets to modern sailing boats and premium yachts. Our  manager will give detailed information each boat so that you can make  the right choice.

Above all we also can help with itinerary and  destination ideal for your needs and time of the year. For example, if  you are looking for diving or other waters sports, we will tell you the  best spots for underwater attractions and the best way to get there.  Where to find the most beautiful views? Which cities should go to catch  spectacular holidays? Where are the best water parks, shopping centers,  casinos, discos? Answers to all these questions will help create a  unique roadmap.

Famous sites from antiquity, white sand beaches painted on an azure ocean, quaint villages overflowing with cultural flavors, and culinary delights you will hunger for.

With its huge diversity of travel experiences, the Mediterranean has something to offer everyone who likes to go sailing. Italy, Greece and Croatia are the most popular cruising destinations, while there's much to enjoy about sailing in the Balearic Islands, Turkey and the South of France. All are covered in our comprehensive guide to Mediterranean yacht charters.

Taking the Work out of a Mediterranean Charter

With all the great destinations on offer, choosing a charter boat in the Mediterranean can be complicated, even confusing. For smooth sailing, it is essential that you sail with an experienced and reputable boat operating company. During more than 20 years in the charter business, we have developed a network of only the best operators - people who we know can be relied on to take care of you, our client. We will match the right yacht from the best operator to your budget, comfort requirements and boat-handling experience.

Our team members have spent a lot of time sailing in the Mediterranean, checking out the boats on offer and the way they are managed. And of course that gives us first-hand experience of the destinations too, valuable knowldge that we want to share.

In the Mediterranean, the suitably-able sailor finds bareboat sailing and boat handling quite straightforward. For extra leisure time, there's always the option of adding a skipper, who takes responsibility for the boat and getting you to where you want to go.

Alternatively, charter fully-crewed, engaging a cook as well as skipper for the ulitimate in relaxation. Even experienced sailors often prefer to hire a crew, which we carefully select in consultation with our operators. Your hired crew not only take care of all the work, but are also willing local guides. They'll recommend the best places to see and best things to do en route, and get you up close to the culture and lifestyles in the places you will visit.

When enlisting our help to organise your charter in the Mediterranean -or anywhere else - you pay no more for our service.

Whether you plan to party all night in Ibiza, or you’d rather relax with a glass of wine in a historic city center, you’re in for a luxury travel experienc e unlike any other. What should you plan to do and see? Here are some of the reasons the Mediterranean is the world’s most popular destination for a luxury yacht charter :

History The body of water the Romans called “mare nostrum” (or “our sea”) is full of historical landmarks important to all of modern Western civilization, from the basilicas of Italy to the earliest churches and monasteries of France and Spain. It’s an architectural goldmine and an inspiration to those who visit. UNESCO World Heritage Sites dot the landscape, as do museums, galleries, and centuries-old historical markers. If you’re interested in art and culture, you’ll love it here.

Food It’s no secret that most of the cities, towns, and villages bordering the Mediterranean Sea are famous for their cuisines. And for foodies, the Mediterranean is a destination like no other. In every port of call, you’ll find a place serving to-die-for foods. From the Michelin-starred restaurants of Monaco to the seaside cafes in Cannes, charter guests are welcomed by great food wherever they go.

Luxury Shopping The Mediterranean is one of the world’s top fashion destinations, with France and Italy holding as much significance in the industry as New York City. Across the region, visitors can explore high-end designer boutiques selling couture garments, accessories, and handbags. Planning to shop? Try Le Metropole Shopping center in Monte-Carlo, one of the world’s best fashion shopping centers. Porto Cervo in Sardinia and La Croisette in Cannes are also must-visit shopping destinations.

Festivals In the Mediterranean, guests are regularly treated to great food, wine, sporting, and cultural festivals. Cannes Film Festival, of course, might be the most famous, drawing A-list celebrities from around the world. Yet, every weekend in the summer, there’s a seaside festival to attend.

Water Sports The waters in the Mediterranean are inviting, and chances are, you’ll spend quite a bit of time in the water while on charter. In particular, the Mediterranean is a hotspot for kitesurfing and windsurfing – especially throughout Italy. Yet, sea kayaking and paddle-boarding are other top activities on a Mediterranean charter. Bottom line, you’ll bask in the sapphire waters during your visit.

Scuba Diving The Mediterranean is rich with history inland, as well as under the sea. In fact, you’ll find incredible dive spots throughout the region. Secca della Colombara and Punta Omo Morto in Italy are favorite dive spots, for example.

Wine For wine-lovers, the Mediterranean is a mecca, offering the best glasses in all of the world. The region’s wine-making tradition, of course, goes back thousands of years, and in every port of call, you’ll find a wine bar, cellar, or bodega serving the best wines. From Sassicaia and Ornellaia from Italy to Bordeaux from France, wine lovers will find much to try and taste in the Mediterranean.

Beach Hopping The Mediterranean offers it all. Art, culture, food, you name it. But there’s another reason to book a luxury yacht charter : Mediterranean beaches! From the Amalfi Coast to Ibiza, from St. Tropez to Sicily, you’ll be welcomed by sun-soaked, white-sand beaches offering the best spots to relax and take in the scenery in every port of call.

Super Yacht Charter: Cruising Conditions

Across the Mediterranean, charter guests are welcomed by amazing cruising conditions: Small swells, calm seas, and amazing weather. Yet each destination offers its own unique cruising experience.

  • Corsica – Corsica offers more than 700 miles of coastline to explore and is known for its upscale marinas, ports, and stunning anchorages. In particular, the Strait of Bonifacio is a top sailing destination, thanks to its steady natural breezes. Around the island, visitors are welcomed by calm seas and cooling breezes throughout summer, as well as warm water conditions.
  • French Riviera – The South of France has a short coastline – just about 400 nautical miles – but there’s much to see and explore along the Cote d’Azur. Here, you’ll find a collection of the world’s most exclusive marinas – like Port Hercule in Monaco and Port de Saint Tropez Marina – and breathtaking anchorages. (Plaga Mala, for example, is a super-tranquil South of France beach anchorage.) Cruising conditions here are ideal: Steady winds, easy 2- to 4-foot swells in summer, and cool breezes.
  • Spain – The Balearic Islands some of the most beautiful anchorages in all of the Mediterranean. The island of Espalmador is a favorite superyacht anchorage. Plus, the marinas like Mallorca’s Club du Mar attract some of the finest superyachts in the world. Sailing is great throughout summer with warm sea winds – June through August. Spring and fall offer more challenging conditions.
  • Sardinia – One of the top sailing destinations in the Mediterranean, sailors come for the steady sea breezes, as well as the protected waters and safe harbors. Calm seas and warm waters welcome visitors in summer.
  • Italian Riviera – An ideal motor yachting destination , with some of the most exclusive marinas in the country including at Portofino and San Remo, the Italian Riviera is an ideal spot for a luxury motor yachting experience.
  • Amalfi Coast – Here you’ll find a collection of some of the most breathtaking anchorages anywhere in the world: Marina Piccola near Capri and the Pontine Islands are two see-it-to-believe-it anchorages. Due to its somewhat longer passage, Amalfi tends to be better for motor yachts.
  • Sicily – The northern and eastern coasts of Sicily offer the best in sail and motor yachting. Here you’ll find well-established marinas, protected waters, and short passages between destinations. In the nearby Aeolian Islands, island hopping in calm seas is a tradition.

Last-minute yacht charters are also available and often at a competitive price; however, this often means forgoing your first boat of choice. Contact a yacht charter broker at Northrop & Johnson and let them find your ideal boat.

How much does a Mediterranean yacht charter cost?

The cost of a yacht charter in the Mediterranean with Northrop & Johnson starts at about $50,000 per week and will include the charter yacht and crew. You will then be charged for additional costs, including fuel, provisions, marina fees, and other expenses in your advanced provisioning allowance (APA). For larger and newer superyachts, you can pay up to $500,000 per week, not including the APA .

What is an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance acts as a bank account and is designed to cover expenses that cannot be fixed in advance, such as food and drink, fuel, and berthing fees. The APA is typically around 25 to 35%. of the yacht charter fee and is paid before the charter commences. The captain is responsible for logging all APA expenses, and you can view the expenses at any time during your boat charter. Any funds left in the APA at the end of your charter holiday are immediately refunded to you.

Where are the best airports to fly into to easily embark your charter yacht in the Mediterranean Sea?

Depending on your itinerary, these are some of the most accessible airports for easy arrival for your private yacht charter:

  • Nice Cote D’Azur Airport
  • Monaco Heliport
  • Ibiza Airport
  • Mykonos Airport

The crew aboard a yacht charter is there to ensure you have the best possible charter experience. Whether cruising in France , Italy , Croatia , Spain , Greece , or Turkey , the yacht crew are there to make your yachting holiday one to remember.

What will the crew do for me on a Mediterranean superyacht charter?

Northrop & Johnson does not handle bareboat yacht charters. All our superyacht charters include a captain, or skipper, and a crew who will make your yacht charter vacation the best experience possible in the Mediterranean in the heart of Europe. A typical crew will include a captain, deck crew, interior crew, and a private chef. Additional crew may include a sommelier, personal fitness trainer, and beauty therapists. The exact roles of the crew will depend on the size and type of your vessel, but you can expect:

  • A captain who is responsible for navigating the yacht and ensuring that all safety regulations are followed
  • Deck crew who take care of the yacht’s exterior, including maintenance tasks such as cleaning, refueling the vessel, water sports activities, and more
  • Interior crew who provide five-star guest services such as serving meals, drinks, cleaning and maintaining the interior, including staterooms, laundry, and more
  • A chef who will prepare gourmet meals to your liking.

Ultimately, the crew will strive to make your experience enjoyable and stress-free by handling even the smallest details during your luxury yacht charter.

Can I decide which meals will be made onboard a yacht charter?

Yes, the menu is completely up to you. You and all guests will provide a preference sheet prior to embarking so the chef and interior crew can provision and have all of your favorites aboard the yacht.

“As a chef, I believe in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create unique and flavorful dishes that are tailored to my guests’ palate. I take pride in creating truly memorable dining experiences that are sure to please.” Chef onboard  a private yacht

How do I book my luxury yacht charter in the Mediterranean?

We will handle everything from organizing the payments, the APA, and even the arrival and departure.

Do I sign a contract for a yacht charter in the Mediterranean?

This contract will outline the terms and conditions of your yacht charter, including the duration of the trip and details of any additional services that you may require. The agreement will also stipulate how much you will be expected to pay in terms of the charter fee and may include other important information such as insurance policies, liability waivers, and maintenance requirements.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

Surrounded by mountains and with crystal clear waters, Kotor bay is one of the most beautiful places to sail – particularly when the sun is shining and there are a few knots of wind in your sails. It feels majestic to wind your way along this gigantic fjord and out to the Adriatic or Mediterranean Sea. There’s so many beautiful old towns to discover – most over a thousand years old – but also remote islands to look over as you sail by, and brand-new sailing facilities which have been built over recent years to turn this place into something of a millionaire’s playground.

Tivat - 6 day sailing itinerary

It’s only a six-day itinerary because you’re likely only going to check in late on Saturday afternoon, so, after getting provisions on board for the week ahead, you’re unlikely to get much purposeful sailing done – so our itinerary sets off on Sunday morning, when you’re fresh and raring to get the boat out! You’ll need to get the boat back to Tivat on the Friday night, so that you can disembark first thing on Saturday morning to give the team time to clean and changeover the boat before someone else takes her on an another adventure next week. But there’s plenty of sailing to be done before then.

This itinerary is 102 nautical miles in total, which means an average of 17 nautical miles a day – which, given that yachts and catamarans can go upwards of 5 knots (nautical miles an hour) means that it should only involve three or four hours of meaningful sailing each day, giving you time to sail at a more leisurely pace, or to spend time exploring the start and end point each day.

Kotor

From Tivat, you need to head northwards up the fjord, through the narrow channel, to get to the final part of the Kotor bay. Pay attention to big cruise ships before you work your way down the channel, though they generally only travel before 9am and after 4pm, so they shouldn’t cause us any problems this week. Once you're through the channel, you'll pass 'Our lady on the rock' (the church with the blue dome). Legend has it that this is an artificial island which has built up over time – it’s considered good luck to throw a rock at or on it to thank God for getting home safely. It started as a pile of pebbles from grateful sailors, and has slowly built up what it is today.

From there, head east and then south towards majestic Kotor, where you'll find the marina at the very end of the bay, or you can moor up in Marina Muo, just south and west of the old town. We love Kotor, and it's a brilliant place to explore!

Herceg Novi

We'll sail back to Our lady on the Rocks for another glimpse, then it's a case of nipping back down the channel towards Tivat, then South-west to the Mediterranean, following the coastline round on your starboard side, passing the monstruous new Portonovi marina, and heading round to moor up in Herceg Novi.

Situated at the opening of Kotor bay, Herceg Novi (meaning ‘new castle’) is most famous for being the first line of defence for the area – you’ll notice as you sail by that there are castles and fortifications galore, as the Ottomans, Venetians, Spanish, French, Russians and Turks (amongst many others) sought to protect the bay from intruders. Given the number of times it’s changed hands, the fortifications can’t have been all that successful... Nowadays, it’s a quiet tourist town which has a bohemian and arty atmosphere, with a number of mud spas, a good range of restaurants, and a livelier nightlife than you might expect.

Budva

Budva is the most popular tourist town in Montenegro - it’s 35 beaches and 11km of fine sand luring in all the locals, but, nowadays, plenty of international tourists too. There’s been a lot of recent developments for tourists – such as ugly hotels and high-rise flats – which have taken some of the sheen off the place, but this is also one of the oldest settlements in the whole of the Mediterranean, and the old town an interesting and exciting place to explore – parts of it are over 2,500 years old!

During high season, there’s plenty happening in the evenings in Budva, and the land-lubbing tourists create a party atmosphere which is hard not to get infected by!

Bar

If time is on your side, there’s an option to stop at Petrovac for a lunchtime excursion (but it depends upon how much you drank last night, or whether you went to the beach or shopping this morning). Petrovac is an idyllic village with a great beach and many, many old and beautiful buildings. It’s very popular with the locals because there is a direct road through the mountains to get from the capital city of Montenegro, Podgorica, and it’s a place where people come to de-stress. The church on the small island was hand-built by a sailor who was shipwrecked on the island one stormy night, as a ‘thanks’ to God.

After sun-bathing awhile, it’s time to admire the unspoilt coastline and mountains from the boat again as we head down to our stopping point for the night – the important and historic town of Bar. It’s important because it’s Montenegro’s main sea-port, and welcomes ferries and cargo ships from across the Med. It’s historic because it has a fantastic old town – this one is slightly different that the other old towns though: it’s been uninhabited for centuries, which means that it is a genuine snapshot of how life used to be here. It's certainly worth a look. Bar is also famous for producing the best olives in Montenegro, and for having an olive tree that is over 2,000 years old!

Lustica

Budva is over 2,500 years old - the settlement at Lustica bay is just under 2 years old. It’s a giant first-class development near Radovici, which will see the building of roads, houses, hotels, shopping centres, a golf course, a brand-new marina (with all the trimmings), and all sorts of other things a village needs. All from scratch, and on the basis that this is one of the most beautiful bays in the whole of Montenegro. The marina opened in July 2018, and will be fully functioning for the 2019 season.

Lustica bay is a luxurious if slightly artificial place to spend the night, and to mix with the well to do sailors of Montenegro.

Tivat

Today is a sail of 16 nautical miles, but, oddly enough, you can make the same journey from Lustica to Tivat on foot in about an hour, because it’s only about a 5km walk. Walking is no fun, however, so we’ll go by sea. We’ll head Southwards out of Lustica bay, then follow the headland round on our starboard side, and re-enter the Kotor bay area, passing the crazy circular Fort Mamula (or Lastavica) on the way in. Fort Mamula takes up 90% of the island and was built in 1853 by the Austrians. Since then, it’s been a fort, a military base, and, during World War II, a concentration camp for opponents of Mussolini’s fascist regime. After being abandoned and uninhabited, in 2016 planning permission was granted for a developer to transform it into (another) luxury resort, complete with multiple restaurants, a beach club, a spa and a nightclub.

Following the coastline round, we’re heading back past Herceg Novi and East towards Tivat, where we'll make ourselves at home again in Porto Montenegro marina. Take the yacht to the fuel berth at the marina to fill up the tanks, then head back to where you found the boat on the first day and berth the yacht one last time. Tie off the lines, then high-five the rest of the crew for a job well done!

The yacht charter company will inspect the hull tonight, so it’s important you get the boat back to the marina before 6pm – but you won’t have to disembark until 9am on Saturday morning. If you’ve not yet had chance to explore Tivat or Kotor, then now is a great time to do that – the view from the castle above Kotor will seem especially poignant now that you’ve conquered the sea below. And then sadly it’s time to head back to the airport. When you get home then you can head to PlainSailing.com and start planning your next adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Montenegro Sailing - Wind Conditions

Once out in the Mediterranean, you can expect decent Force 3 to 4 winds heading up and down the coast. If you stick close to the mainland, you’ll notice the mistral winds which race towards land during the day (the sun heats the land, which heats the air above it, which, in turn, rises, and sucks air in from over the sea), and out to sea at night. Further out from the coast and you’ll meet trade winds which rush down the Adriatic towards Greece, and which will ensure you can make quick progress South, before beating your way back up North.

In winter, there’s no such thing as a prevailing wind, and you’re as likely to meet cold winds from the Alps and the Dolomites as you are the warm tropical stormy winds which arrive from the South of the Med.

Tivat - Average Temperature

Porto Montenegro, Tivat

Porto Montenegro, once a naval marina, now markets itself an ‘exclusive marina and yachting paradise’. It has space for over 450 boats, and also boasts the worlds longest berth, able to accommodate superyachts upto 250m in length (if they’re still called superyachts when they get to that size?). It was built in 2009 and people flock here to be part of the ‘in’ crowd. It has a range of fine-dining restaurants, but it is also under a kilometre from the town of Tivat.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend this place that is close to the marina: Hotel San .

The very best places to charter in Greece

Published 19 September 2024

Quaint white washed villages, windswept islands, clear blue waters, protected harbours and pristine beaches — Greece is a yachting playground for good reason. There are a wealth of places in Greece to discover on a yacht charter, from iconic islands like Santorini to lesser-visited petite islands and exploring the coast of the mainland. On a Greek yacht charter, you can find yourself the sole vessel moored in front of a quiet beach you can only reach by boat, dance the day away at a Mykonos beach club or visit historic archaeological sites. No matter your interests, stepping on board a private yacht in the Greek islands can take you there.

The Cyclades Islands

From the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter.

Coast of Mykonos

With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches.

Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas.

The Saronic Islands

Sailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that  it ’ s  no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are  home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of  Septses , where  you ’ ll  find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries.  The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance .

Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is  totally devoid  of cars and exudes an  old world  charm  —  not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt.

Hydra, greece

About an hour from Athens,  Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with  neoclassical architecture,  upscale  cafes  and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands,  Sphairia  and  Kalaureia ,  which are  connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon  —  dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history.

A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over  Poros town. Poros offers a  winning  blend of natural beauty, historical significance  and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination  when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter.

The Dodecanese Islands

Further away from mainland Greece  are  the Dodecanese Islands, which are  actually closer  to the coast of  Turkey  than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos,  Patmos  and Rhodes, to name a few.  There ’ s  also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along  Turkey ’ s  stunning coastline.

Lindos acropolis

Rhodes, Lindos

With 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty.

There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below.

Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water.

Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene  beaches  and a bustling  harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is  winning of  the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the  Tunnel of  Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island.

Heraion of Samos

Nature lovers will want to hike up to the  Potami  waterfalls or swim in the  crystal-clear  waters of  Lemonakia  beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will  want to make  to visit the Samos Wine Museum in  Malagari  to learn about  —  and sample  —  the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer.

The Ionian Islands

Located off the west coast of mainland Greece, the  Ionian Islands   comprise  seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia,  Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These  serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way.  The   islands   here  are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s.

Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a  mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey.

Assos' Venetian heritage can still be seen

Kefalonia, Assos

On the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond.

The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas.

This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge.

Samaria Gorge, Crete

On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach.

The Peloponnese Peninsula

The Peloponnese Peninsula,  located  in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural  beauty  and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese   Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are  renown  for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius.

Nafpilo nestles between the hillside and the sea

A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches.

The Sporades Islands

Located in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches,  crystal-clear   waters  and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos,  Skopelos ,  Alonissos  and Skyros. The island of  Skopelos  is  somewhat famous   as  being one of the main filming locations for the film  Mamma Mia!   starring Meryl Streep.  Skopelos  is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of  natural beauty was  showcased  in the movie .

The Sporades Islands

The nearby island of  Alonissos  is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern  Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including  numerous  underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts  more than  60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries  Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters.  The island of Skyros  is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian  ponies.

Don't forget Mainland Greece

While the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display.

Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night.

The Parthenon temple and Acropolis citadel dominate the Athens skyline

Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located  on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect  harbour  and long stretches of beach.
