Business name : Silver Gate Yacht Club

In 1951, the Silver Gate Yacht Club began as just a dream in the hearts of a handful of San Diego Boat owners, but it soon evolved into a commitment to make this dream a reality.

The first step was the completion of by-laws that were needed to receive a state charter. These by-laws came together during an overnight camp out on the bare sands of Shelter Island and were finished at dawn. An event celebrated at our Silver Fizz breakfast

The next goal was a clubhouse and adjoining marina. This began with members pledges which came in slowly as the club continued to grow. At last there was enough to move forward. A lease was signed with the San Diego port district and construction began. The club’s first social event — a wall raising followed by a pot luck dinner — was the first regular meeting held on the Silver Gate Yacht Club’s own property.

When the charter was granted in November 1952, and application made for recognition by the Southern California Yachting Association, the Silver Gate was on the way to becoming the fastest growing club in San Diego.

For over 60 years the Silver Gate Yacht Club has built a proud history of bringing boaters together for friendship, camaraderie and to continue its long tradition of giving back to the community.

Silver Gate Yacht Club members represent a rich cross-section of sailors, power boaters, fisherman, racers and all who love being on the water and building friendships and socializing with others who do.

We also bring our love of the water to the San Diego community through three signature annual charitable events – the Wheelchair Regatta, the Schooner Cup and our hosting of the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge, plus offering an extensive Junior Sailing Program.

San Diego’s Top Three Yacht Clubs

Whether you’re still sailing your used San Diego boat from the ‘90s or have upgraded to a luxurious and spacious yacht, many boating enthusiasts find that they appreciate and sometimes enjoy their vessel more when they belong to a yacht club. In addition to broadening your horizons and meeting others who share the same interests, most clubs hold activities such as cruise outs or races where you can become even more involved in the sailing culture.

If you’re interested in joining a yacht club in the San Diego area, we’ve listed three of the most popular and well known clubs:

San Diego Yacht Club

Located on the San Diego Bay in Point Loma, the San Diego Yacht Club is part of the area’s history and has been at this location since 1924. With facilities open all year, you’ll find 576 boat slips with dry storage for 161 boats. Other amenities include picnic areas, a swimming pool, fitness center, gift shop, dining room with banquet facilities, and a snack bar which is open during the warm summer months. While the yacht club’s year-round Junior Program attracts many, there are also adult sailing classes and races for those who recently purchased a boat in San Diego .

Silver Gate Yacht Club

The Silver Gate Yacht Club was founded in 1952 and has brought together sailors, fishermen, power boaters, and racers who have a love for the water. They are well known for hosting three nationally recognized charitable events, the Schooner Cup, the Wheelchair Regatta, and the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge. While there are docks available for guests, the club itself is able to accommodate 145 boats. The club also has a facility for private parties and banquets, a patio for barbeques, and a bar that boasts a fantastic view of San Diego Bay and Shelter Island Yacht Basin.

Southwestern Yacht Club

The SWYC is set on a sprawling 11.7 acres of water and on 3.7 acres of land that overlooks Point Loma and the San Diego Bay. In 2010, the club opened a new state-of-the art dining and clubhouse facility with enhanced member space and outdoor decks as well as a new kitchen. The club also boasts 385 slips, 287 parking spaces for its active members, a group of individuals who are fans of a wide range of activities including angling, sailing and cruiser navigation.

While yacht clubs often have a robust and active membership, many are actively looking for more great additions. And if you’re thinking about selling your boat in San Diego so you can upgrade before signing up with a new yacht club, contact Ballast Point Yachts, Inc. today. As San Diego’s trusted boat brokerage, we can help you sell your vessel quickly and without hassles. Call us at 619-222-3620 for more information about our pre-purchase inspection process.

Annual Wheelchair Regatta removes barriers

silver gate yacht

Silver Gate Yacht Club hosts “Day on the Bay” sailing event to benefit disabled individuals.

SAN DIEGO — Silver Gate Yacht Club brings its annual Wheelchair Regatta back to San Diego on June 10, providing disabled individuals an opportunity to spend the day on the water.

The yacht club hosts the Wheelchair Regatta as part of its “Day on the Bay” festivities, where hundreds of people come together to enjoy lunch, music and the water.

This year’s regatta, which is its 58th installment, brings together yacht club members and volunteers to host physically and/or mentally challenged individuals for a tour of San Diego Bay.

Food, drinks and service items are often donated to the regatta; fuel has been provided at a discounted rate for previous regattas. Service members from Miramar Air Station also volunteer their efforts to the Wheelchair Regatta, attending the sailing event to help challenged participants onto boats.

The regatta has drawn somewhere between 400 and 500 people in recent years. Silver Gate YC’s boat owners volunteer their boats (and time) to the cause.

Silver Gate YC hosted its first Wheelchair Regatta in 1960 and provides those who might not otherwise have the chance to be on the water to experience a boat ride.

“Every year since 1960, the Silver Gate Yacht Club has been joined by the boating community and military volunteers to provide a day on the water for hundreds of physically challenged guests from San Diego and surrounding communities,” the Silver Gate YC website stated about the Wheelchair Regatta.

Call Silver Gate YC at 619-222-1214 for details or more information, or visit the yacht club’s website at sgyc.org.
