Methodology

Our team reviewed and researched some of the largest wealth management firms in the U.S. to rank the best available today.

For our rankings, we used the most recent ADV filings by registered advisors, as available from the SEC. Our researchers verified the data and confirmed any missing points by contacting each company directly.

The firms that made our list excelled in the following categories:

  • Client profile.
  • Firm profile.
  • Services (e.g., portfolio management, financial planning, educational seminars).
  • Other broker or advisory services.

Why other wealth management firms didn’t make the cut

We reviewed 25 companies to create this list of the best wealth management firms. The ones that didn’t make the cut fell short on features most clients want. For example, they may have had a client-to-advisor ratio that was too high to ensure personalized attention. Others didn’t serve enough high-net-worth clients for us to feel confident in their services. And some didn’t offer enough services overall.

Firms that were too small or didn’t operate in most states were cut. So were firms that served mostly clients with smaller account balances. We gave more points to firms that offered wrap fee programs, which simplify fee structures. It was also a point in favor of the firm if it offered educational seminars. But this wasn’t a deal breaker.

We also checked the firm’s rating on the BBB website. Almost all the firms that made our list have a rating of A-minus or higher.

Final verdict

The best overall wealth management firm of 2024 is Morgan Stanley. It has a long history of serving clients around the globe and offers both in-person and virtual guidance.

The firm has 13,000 advisors, so you’re likely to find a good fit. It also offers services sure to satisfy every investor’s needs. These include some of the most comprehensive educational offerings of the firms we reviewed.

How to find the best wealth management firm

Wealth managers offer a wide range of services and fees. Finding the best wealth management firm for you may require due diligence.

Start by considering what services you want. Is cash flow planning important to you? Do you need help finding the right insurance coverage? What about philanthropy? Chances are, a firm out there can meet your needs.

“Focus on their track record with high-net-worth clients, their access to exclusive investment opportunities and their ability to offer holistic services,” said Brian McGraw, a senior wealth advisor at Hightower Wealth Advisors. These holistic services should “encompass tax strategy, estate planning and risk management tailored to preserve and grow your wealth.”

You’ll also likely want a firm that operates under the fiduciary standard. This ensures that your advisor will always act in your best interest. It’s important to have reassurance when you give someone discretionary trading authority over your account.

When to consider a wealth management advisor

Not everyone needs a wealth manager. Most people probably don’t. But there may come a time when you consider hiring one.

McGraw said this typically occurs when your financial portfolio becomes too complex to manage independently. Consider hiring a wealth manager as you accumulate assets, investments and business interests.

"A wealth manager can provide strategic oversight that aligns with long-term financial goals, especially during transitional life events such as retirement or inheritance," McGraw said.

Services a wealth management firm offers

Wealth management firms are designed to provide all the services high-net-worth individuals need. These services often extend beyond investment management, although that’s a core component.

The services you can expect from a wealth management firm include:

  • Investment management.
  • Portfolio construction.
  • Risk management.
  • Retirement planning.
  • Tax planning.
  • Cash flow planning.
  • Legacy and estate planning.
  • Philanthropy.

Some firms help with cybersecurity and digital assets. Many provide guidance for business owners, such as succession planning and exit strategization.

Wealth management firms may also offer specialized services for certain groups. For example, some firms work with professional athletes or business executives.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Wealth management firms can be compensated in a few ways. They earn fees from their clients for financial planning or investment management. They may also earn marketing or partner fees from mutual fund companies for using their products. These revenue-sharing payments can generate hundreds of millions of dollars for wealth management firms each year.

Wealth management firms can help with tax planning. Minimizing taxes is a key concern for many high-net-worth individuals, so firms often prioritize it. Some firms employ in-house tax professionals, while others coordinate with third-party experts.

You may not need a wealth manager if you already have a financial advisor . But a wealth manager often provides a wider range of services. This integrated approach is particularly suited to high-net-worth individuals.

The American Con Man Who Pioneered Offshore Finance

How a now-obscure financier turned the Bahamas into a tax haven—and created a cornerstone of global plutocracy

two palm trees growing on a small island made of money

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

The financier and bon vivant Wallace Groves had little use for the law or social norms. His wife, a former Hollywood starlet, left him in 1937 after he’d had their infant son briefly kidnapped from their glittering Park Avenue triplex apartment. A day after the supposed abduction, authorities arrested Groves on the tarmac at Newark airport, in the company of two women whom Time magazine coyly described as his “girl friends.” Monaei (pronounced “ money -I”) Groves soon ended up with a divorce settlement worth about $3 million in today’s currency. New Deal–era federal prosecutors, bent on reining in what President Franklin D. Roosevelt called “privileged princes of new economic dynasties,” indicted him the following year on multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy.

Monaei’s testimony helped put Groves in a federal penitentiary. But his conviction didn’t break his spirit or teach him the error of his ways. Historical accounts indicate that he left prison with a new wife— Monaei’s former hairdresser —a ticket to the Bahamas, and a plan that would change the world. What started as his personal quest to rebuild a fortune turned a balmy Caribbean archipelago into a powerhouse of the global economy and a model for what we now call the offshore financial system. Groves started by taking over a sleepy lumber business on the island of Grand Bahama, but by 1955 had amassed so much wealth and political capital that he persuaded the colonial government to do something extraordinary: Authorities granted him carte blanche to rule and develop 50,000 acres—about 15 percent of the island, including what is now the city of Freeport—that would be immune from taxation and regulation for the next 99 years.

The Bahamas, which gained independence in 1973, are well known today as the former home of Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency exchange FTX, whose meltdown cost investors $8 billion. But the company would never have set up in the island nation if not for Groves, the founding fraudster of offshore finance. Groves pioneered the model for turning British colonies with lax financial regulation and minimal taxation for expats into snug harbors for foreign capital seeking refuge from other countries’ laws. A generation later, Groves’s imitators expanded his model to the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, and other territories of the fading British empire.

Cover of Offshore by Brooke Harriungton

According to the International Monetary Fund, the Bahamas are now the fourth-largest tax haven in the world in terms of the volume of assets flowing through the country. It’s a major hub of a global system that the economists Annette Alstadsæter, Gabriel Zucman, and their colleagues at the EU Tax Observatory estimate contains at least $13.7 trillion in private household wealth ; the IMF estimated that a similar amount of corporate wealth— $12 trillion —is held in offshore shell companies that exist mainly to dodge taxes and other laws. In total, that amounts to about a quarter of the wealth produced annually worldwide.

Read: Every country is a tax haven

Offshore finance has become tightly integrated with the global economy, as corporations channel their money through the Bahamas and other havens to limit their taxes, deter outside scrutiny of their financial dealings, and take advantage of permissive securities laws. Offshore finance has probably affected your life without you knowing it. For example, lax offshore regulation made possible the securitization of risky subprime mortgages , the financial “innovation” that crashed the world economy in 2008. If you’re an American with a pension or a life-insurance annuity, odds are that at least some of your money has ended up in the offshore tax haven of Bermuda , as the business journalist Mary Williams Walsh reported earlier this year.

T oday, Groves is a largely forgotten figure, even in the Bahamas. But the ubiquity of offshore finance is partly a consequence of the model that he pioneered. In his heyday, he was lauded in the Bahamian press as a savior of the country: In 1965, The Bahamian Review praised the “intrepid developer Wallace Groves” and “the invaluable service done to this section of Mankind by the creator of Freeport.” Two years later, a Florida newspaper dubbed him “ the King of the Bahamas .”

It was an apt moniker for a man who had reinvented himself as a kind of freelance imperialist, making Freeport his own personal colony within a colony. The resorts, casinos, and financial institutions that arose there attracted not only tourists but money launderers, tax dodgers, and mobsters. Groves’s partners were denizens of the global financial demimonde: a Canadian gambler and Mafia associate, a former Swiss banker who had escaped the French penal colony of Devil’s Island after being convicted of financial crimes, and the notorious gangster Meyer Lansky.

Within 15 years of Groves’s acquisition of Freeport, his creation was flourishing to such an extent that The Economist described the Bahamas as “ the archetype of the tax haven .” Local publications billed it as the “Little Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere.” Hundreds of American, Canadian, and Swiss banks opened branches in the capital city of Nassau, and by 1975, the offshore business employed nearly 10 percent of the island’s population. By 2019, the Financial Times described the Bahamas as “the richest country in the Caribbean” in terms of GDP per capita, due largely to its offshore financial-services business, which by then made up an estimated 20 percent of its national economy . These figures represent an extraordinary transformation from the Bahamas of the mid-1940s, when local historians recorded widespread destitution and occasional death by starvation.

Yet the country’s Gini coefficient for household wealth—a measure of economic inequality—is among the highest in the world . Ironically, in a center of global finance, an estimated one in five Bahamians still lacks access to a bank account , and real wages are so low that the government occasionally institutes price controls to keep bread and eggs affordable.

About 50 miles from Miami Beach—the distance of a day’s sail—the Bahamas make for a convenient spot to engage in activities that aren’t permitted under U.S. law. Groves knew all about this from his Depression-era trips to the islands on his yacht, Regardless. When he was still a high-flying young financier, he got acquainted with the islands’ elite white power brokers and established two of the offshore corporations that later got him convicted of tax evasion .

At that point, Groves was just walking a well-trodden path of exploitation and chicanery first blazed by Christopher Columbus, whose initial steps in the New World were taken on the island now known as Grand Bahama. Within two decades, Spanish explorers had killed or carried off the island’s native inhabitants, and for centuries afterward, Caribbean historians note, pirates made the Bahamas their base and became the de facto rulers. From then on, being a law-free zone intermittently boosted the economy of the Bahamas.

In the 1860s, Nassau, the islands’ capital, grew rich for a few years by helping the Confederacy evade the Union’s maritime blockade, becoming a trading post where southern cotton was exchanged for British arms . When Prohibition banned the sale of liquor on American soil in the 1920s, the islands became a hub of “rum running.” This turned out to be what local historians have described as a “godsend for the Bahamian economy,” creating a steady flow of income from wealthy tourists and buyers to supplement a “desperately poor” nation just getting by on fishing and agriculture. It also created what social scientists call a “criminogenic environment”—one likely to reward illegal acts. The Bahamas’ role in skirting the laws of other countries intensified in the mid-1930s, when Americans started using the islands to escape the increased taxes imposed by Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Read: The United States of dirty money

Groves and other tax dodgers from North America and Europe were drawn to the Bahamas not only by the lack of financial regulation, but also by the promise of secrecy and stability offered by the institutions of British imperialism.

Under British laws designed to reward white settlers in British colonial possessions , the Bahamas levied no taxes on personal or corporate income. It did business in English—a major attraction for North Americans—and was governed by English law; the ultimate court of appeals for disputes in the Bahamas was the Privy Council in London. The currency was the familiar, reliable British pound.

But wealthy foreigners also had the security of knowing that what happened in Nassau would stay in Nassau. The Bahamian historian Anthony Audley Thompson described the impact of companies that “were in effect legal fictions designed solely for the purpose of evading taxation in countries abroad. Because no treaties provided for the exchange of financial information between the Bahamas and other governments, the accounts of such corporations were not subject to scrutiny by foreign authorities.” He added that the Bahamian government did not require these largely imaginary holding companies to file financial statements .

In short, British colonial administration had unintentionally put in place the legal and financial infrastructure necessary to build an ideal offshore financial center.

Life magazine likened the 1955 agreement between Groves and the Bahamas to the “blank-check” given in 1600 by Queen Elizabeth I to the British East India Company —the catalyst for a centuries-long enterprise of plunder and pillage that brought a globe-spanning empire into being. Groves’s innovation, such as it was, lay in making the perks cherished by British colonists—among those the absence of capital-gains and income tax—available to the global ultrarich, people who weren’t settlers and might never set foot in the islands at all.

As the British empire in the Caribbean began to break up in the late 1960s and early ’70s, many of the islands turned to Groves’s model as a way to gain economic self-sufficiency. Regional competition heated up, including from unexpected places such as the famously mosquito-plagued and underdeveloped Cayman Islands; within 20 years, by revamping itself along the Bahamas’ lines, the Caymans went from being a neglected dependency of British Jamaica to surpassing the per capita income of Great Britain itself .

This put pressure on the Bahamas to keep pushing the boundaries of the law as an international tax haven. Thus, two years after Bahamians declared independence from the British, an interview with the governor of the Central Bank concluded that “national self-sufficiency and self-reliance” required that the country not only continue its practices, but also aggressively expand its role as an offshore financial center. In other words, the new nation would sustain itself by helping wealthy foreigners break their own countries’ laws.

The 2022 collapse of Bankman-Fried’s FTX is a direct outgrowth of this historical trajectory. In keeping with the Bahamas’ centuries of resilience in the face of colonial crime sprees and contemporary frauds, the FTX debacle does not seem to have done lasting damage to the country’s economy. Yet the country’s government continues to bet its future on highly speculative financial ventures, enacting policies to entice more blockchain-based, decentralized-finance businesses to the country. For example, the Bahamian Central Bank was the first in the world to issue its own digital currency—the sand dollar—and announced a plan to give away $1 million worth of it as an incentive to early adopters. This strategy seems likely to perpetuate a cycle of economic boom and bust based on fraud and criminality. Wallace Groves is a historical footnote, but we are all living in the world he helped create.

This essay has been adapted from Brooke Harrington’s forthcoming book, Offshore: Stealth Wealth and the New Colonialism .

Review for Atlantic Yacht Basin, Inc.

atlantic yacht management reviews

We found the docking challenging in the early evening with wind and river currents. Dock hand was not helpful and focused on minimizing our footprint. A bump and grind effort our part. The dock hand the next morning (Bill) was amazing and we had a smooth departure and took on fuel while we waited for the bridge to open. We paid $3.45 for diesel.

View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

My previous review was incorrect about the fuel price. Even though the credit card receipt showed 6% sales tax, this was part of the advertised fuel price. What I paid per gallon was the same as price on the sign.

This looks like what everyone has stated, a very industrial great place to get repairs done if you need it. Gas is very cheap! It is also very close to anything and everything you need for provisioning. We did not have great staff attention at all. In fact, when we left I couldn't find anyone that works there and I called on the radio and the phone. When we docked the night before, a staff member told us, "I'll be right there" and we waited over 1/2 hour before we decided to go to dinner and check back in with him when we got back. The wakes were not bad at all. The tie up was very quiet and we slept well. We had great wind and no weather.

Great place for repairs. Attention to detail is evident with their work. Not lots of luxuries here for Marina visitors here but that's not their primary purpose, however all of the necessary elements are present. Great transient stop as well. Staff is on site 24/7/365.

We came here expecting to stay for one or two days. On the second day my wife suffered a serious injury (not the marina's fault, long story). Within two minutes of the accident there was a staff member there with a first aid kit and called 911. They understood we were in a bad situation and we ended up staying 5 days before weather and her injury would allow us to continue. Not only did the marina work with me but they also checked in with us each day. They did everything they could to help us out and I thank them for it. Hospital ER was nearby as was supermarket and everything we needed.

Stopped for fuel on 5-14-22. Price was $5.45 for diesel. Easy in and out and plenty of water at fuel dock and caught next opening at Great Bridge. Docks are fixed.

Love this place! Easy tie up on the face dock, just steps to restroom/showers. Great dockmasters (there 24 hours a day). Edd helped us tie up, gave us the lay of the land, and had good recommendations for places to eat (a short walk). Added bonus - its proximity to the Great Bridge, which opens hourly, meant pretty much zero wake overnight.

This is a major and highly regarded big boat marina with an exceptional reputation for excellent work. Had to replace an engine here. Could not be happier with the work done. This is also an excellent place to winter store your vessel.

Awesome awesome awesome! They went out of their way to help me when my gearbox failed in the lock! Reasonable rates, and nice knowledgable people. I'd definitely use them again. Thanks, Heath

Good for a quick stop over, reasonable fuel. No frills. Easy access to historic site across the bridge, worth the walk or bike over. Great walking trail there too. If you have a bike there is a lot to ride to but will be on a busy main street. No frills at facility - very basic but good for one night stop over.

Very convenient location for staging for an early morning bridge and lock opening. Reasonably priced. Basic facilities.

We brought our boat here for extensive body repairs after hurricane damage. We were not disappointed with the choice. James did a great job coordinating and managing our repairs. In addition to the damage, we did a good bit of routine maintenance as well. Very happy with all the work. Yes, there are probably more economical options but we wanted quality work and felt we got that. We did winter storage as well. As has been noted by others, AYB does not have extensive marina facilities, but it is walking distance to several restaurants, shopping, and a decent grocery. All of the staff are cordial, helpful and knowledgeable.

This is a big boatyard operation that can easily overshadow the basic Marina experience. I have used both. AYB can handle virtually any maintenance or repair at a reasonable price. They are the perfect stop on the ICW. Fuel and full services with easy on easy off side ties. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. AYB is just off the main drag with everything you need from restaurants, groceries, hardware, parks and American history a short stroll away.

Good place to stay while waiting for better weather. WiFi is great!

Being new to boating along the East coast I really did not know what to expect. I read some reviews about AYB. What I remember was “they tend to be overpriced but are very good”. Well it seems to me that “very good” should be worth something. I decided to have AYB pull my boat, repaint the bottom and do a couple of small maintenance items. They did a very good job at a fair price within agreed upon timeframes. But that is not why I gave them five stars. In the interim both my wife and I developed serious health problems. The boat is still there as I write this! We have had multiple extensions of our storage and dockage along with a winterization and recommissioning. Everyone has been so helpful and accommodating that it is hard to imagine the day we finally say goodbye and cast off. This is an organization worth developing a long term relationship with. They are friendly, will give you an honest professional opinion and back it up with quality work all the while making you feel that they are truly happy you are there. Thanks James, Marty and Faye!

AYB is very responsive and a great place to stop if you need any repairs or refits. Very responsive. Ed, the dock hand knows the place like the back of his hand and James Taylor, the service manager, knows how to get things done quickly and efficiently. If your just looking for a quick one night stop, there are free docks In a city park across the canal, but, no power or water. The area is a good stop in either direction as it sits on the south end of the great bridegroom lock. Fuel price was good too, 0.50 less than Coinjock. FYI, docks are fixed, I saw no gaps and considerable new wood.

"We are really not a marina," commented the dockmaster in response to my question about available facilities during the registration process. Have to agree with him. You would think that a place that puts up slick ads with beautiful photos about their boatyard would also have a beautiful marina. Not so. Not very picky, but I would never take a shower in their facility. The docks are rough with large gaps between boards. Our dog's leg fell through. There is an area that could be grassy for a dog walk, but it is mostly mud. Atlantic may be a great boatyard, but it is a marginal marina for transients.

Chesapeake has a lot to offer and is accessible from this facility. Great staging point to grab supplies / provisions before heading towards Coinjock.

Wintered the boat in the shed, well protected, safe and secure. High quality work and without question they stand behind their work product. Services exceeded expectations, highly recommend.

Came in for a repair which went well other than a parts delay. Dock hands were helpful. Taylor was especially friendly. Enjoyed our stay and Chesapeake itself. Understand that it is primarily a boatyard, but facilities and docks are due for an update.

AYB remains a top notch facility. Dedicated and attentive crew always willing to assist. Nothing fancy here - but a landmark on the ICW since 1936. Good fuel prices and within easy walking distance to restaurants and stores in Great Bridge. Quiet and secure. One of our favorite stops.

Quick and professional help with docking and fueling. The marina is a great place to walk the dog and there are many restaurants and shops within easy walking distance.

Widely believed to be the best repair and maintenance yard in the world. First class skills and first class service. Can I say more !

Everyone knows that AYB is the place to stop if you need to stage for the next leg of your trip north or south along the ICW - and they have a great reputation for service and support. We had a couple of minor problems that needed repairing. The work was performed in a couple of hours and we were on our way. Take time to walk around the property and get the feel of a working boat yard. The sheds are full of wonderful old boats. AYB is also a superb hurricane hole.

Atlantic Yacht and Ship is one of the most professional, knowledgeable, and responsive brokerage companies I have ever worked with. Looking for our next boat, I came across a listing for an ILIAD catamaran from Atlantic Yacht and Ship/ David Huffman in Dania Beach. I made a call to inquire about it, and in less than 10 minutes I received a call from David with full information about the vessel, he scheduled to show me the vessel within 48 hours right on the same call. The boat was exactly as described in the listing, and David was very knowledgeable about the boat. During the entire purchasing process, David was there to guide us and deal with any issues that came up. He was responsive to our requests and always available to answer questions and did everything possible to assist us in the purchase experience. I would highly recommend David Huffman and the Atlantic Yacht and Ship team if you are planning to buy or sell a vessel. This is a high level of service!

I purchased a boat that was listed by Atlantic Yacht & Ship. The listing broker was an older "old school" guy that was great. Very responsive and a straight shooter. When I surveyed the boat, the co-listing broker shows up, Eddie Biggie who seems to suffer from Napoleon Complex. This guy was so full of himself that he actually bragged about how he took advantage of an older widow who needed to sell a 90' Viking. He bought it himself at half market value and turned around and sold it at a huge profit. This slime ball doesn't care about anyone but himself, which is ironic, because on the Atlantic Yacht & Ship website, Eddie's Biography reads: "Biggie believes that his clients deserve more attention than is typically offered in the marine industry. For this reason Biggie keeps in close contact with all his customers, seeing them through any upgrades and repairs their yachts may require. He also says he is willing to assist with any issue, boat-related or not." What a load of crap! I asked Eddie if he could get some SeaStar hydraulic fluid for me, as the boat steering system needed fluid and he wouldn't even do that for me. Stay clear, use caution. Self centered individual who only cares about the $ale.

Do not list your yacht with this dealer - they are extremely unresponsive. As a buyer we have called the main line and the broker multiple times over many weeks. We've never received a return call. According to the front desk it's just best to call the broker again.
