On a gulet, safety is a top priority for both children and adults. Experienced captains navigate routes based on wind direction to ensure a comfortable ride, and gulets have safety equipment like life jackets, throwable flotation devices, and medical kits. Gulets also have a wooden or inox rail to prevent falls, and some have safety nets. Children can play safely in the super saloon during cruising, and parents should always follow ship rules and keep an eye on their kids. In the rare event of someone falling overboard, the crew is trained to handle it, but prevention is key. Remember, safety always comes first!

Yes, you can sleep outside on the deck of a gulet, and it is a must-do when cruising with a gulet. Imagine anchoring in a quiet bay after dinner and relaxing under the stars. Just make sure to bring extra blankets and clothes, as nights can get cold. Talk to your salesperson and captain about gulets with large deck spaces and routes with more natural bays and a mild climate. Remember, safety is always a top priority.

Yes, it is possible to change group members during a gulet cruise, but it is essential to inform the captain beforehand. It will require some maneuvering in organizing the route, but it is not impossible. The destination of the port where people change must be settled in advance, and our customer support experts will be happy to tailor the route to your liking. Just inform your sales expert, and he will do his best to take all your wishes into consideration.

Embarkation usually starts around 4.00 PM or 5.00 PM, and the ship will embark from the port after settling in. The crew will prepare you a welcome drink and your first dinner. Disembarkation takes place after breakfast, latest until 9.00 AM or 10.00 AM, depending on the gulet and destination. The captain will dock at your port of check-out one day earlier or, according to your wishes, stay in a bay nearby away from crowds.

Yes, most gulets have mobile broadband internet, but not satellite-connected, and coverage can be limited in remote areas. In Croatia, coverage is about 80%. Downloading videos or streaming movies is not recommended due to internet limitations. Prepaid internet sim cards are available, and many harbors, restaurants, and bars offer free internet in Croatia. Some deluxe gulets have satellite connections, but this is rare and should be arranged in advance.

Gulets have classic European 24 V / 220 electrical sockets, making it easy to plug in devices such as hairdryers and mobile phones. However, since gulets are not always connected to the electric power plant, it is essential to be mindful of power usage. Some gulets have more generators and are better equipped with electricity, and some have solar panels. It’s worth keeping these limitations in mind when booking your cruise. Air conditioning is a significant generator user, so you need to be aware of its usage and limits. Nonetheless, feel free to plug in your devices while cruising, as you won’t run out of battery.

Gulets are primarily pleasure boats and are not built for heavy sailing. They usually sail near the coast and only enter open waters when safe. The primary goal of a gulet cruise is to explore picturesque bays, swimming spots, and islands. Most gulets have sails, but they are mainly for showing and taking pictures, and 90% of the time, the gulet will use a motor. However, if you desire to sail on a gulet, ask your sales representative for options.

The crew on gulets can communicate with guests in different languages. Although some captains may not speak English fluently, they will try their best to understand and communicate with you. Luxury gulets often have crew members who speak multiple languages such as German, French, Spanish, Italian or Russian. If you have a specific language requirement, inform your sales expert, and they will do their best to accommodate your needs.

Yes, our company provides 24/7 support during your stay on a gulet. We aim to make your cruise memorable and will try to find a solution for anything you need. It is important to inform us at least 24 hours in advance of your preferences so that the captain and his crew can take all of them into consideration. We recommend booking your gulet few months in advance, especially for high season, and we are always reachable to assist you during your cruise.

Payment with credit cards is not possible on gulet charters, so cash is needed to buy provisions for your gulet cruise. Extras like water sports or private marinas also need to be paid in cash. ATMs are easily accessible but have limits on withdrawals and fees. Payment with credit cards is possible in most luxury restaurants and bars, but it’s important to check with local establishments in more deserted or non-touristic areas to avoid unpleasant situations.

The currency you need to pay on your gulet cruise depends on the gulet you are using, as they may use their home currency. In Croatia, that is Euro. In general, it’s best to ask your sales representative about their payment options. ATMs are available everywhere in Croatia, but there may be differences in withdrawal fees and currency conversions. Payment with credit cards is also an option in more touristy areas, but not on gulets.

Gulet cruise expenses depend on the food package. In Croatia, half-board is common, and dinners onshore will require some money, but the amount of food on the gulet will be significant. Prices of drinks on the gulet are usually the same or cheaper than onshore bars. Tipping in Croatia is acceptable but not mandatory, and it is usually around 5% to 10%. It’s recommended to make a budget as expenses depend on personal choices.

Yes, you can change the route during your gulet cruise, but the captain has the final say. Before the cruise, you will discuss the route options with the captain based on your preferences, weather, and other factors. Once you are on the gulet, you can modify the route, but safety is the captain’s priority, and they will ensure that the route changes are safe. It is recommended to trust the captain’s expertise and let them take care of the rest to enjoy your cruise to the fullest.

Yes, you can choose to anchor in quiet natural bays overnight, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, you need to consider the weather and listen to the advice of your experienced captain to ensure safety. It may also be difficult to find secluded bays during high season, and there is an expectation of quiet after midnight. If you plan a big party, let the captain know in advance to avoid any potential issues. Anchoring in bays is a great experience for morning swims and dinners under the stars, but it’s recommended to talk to your captain and arrange to have dinner instead of lunch if you choose a half-board package.

Yes, the route can be tailored to your liking. When finalizing your cruise, you can describe your preferences, such as whether you prefer swimming and sunbathing or more active activities, staying in ports or bays, and being organized or going with the flow. The route planning will be done together with you and the captain, taking into consideration your gulet and its possibilities, the number of cruising days, your interests, and weather conditions. The captain will also guide you through the next day’s plan and make adjustments if needed, as long as it is safe and realistic.

The availability of water activities on a gulet depends on the vessel, so it’s important to discuss your preferences with your sales expert beforehand. Most gulets have basic equipment on board, but if you have specific requests, it’s best to mention them in advance. Water sports can be arranged and delivered to you if not available on the gulet, and local providers are also an option. Additional charges may apply for activities and equipment. The customer support team is always ready to help you plan an exciting and active gulet cruise.

Gulets can sail, but they are not built for heavy sailing. Their main domains are pleasure and relaxation. Some gulets do not even have sails, and crews are not always keen on sailing. However, if the winds are strong enough, you may be able to sail, and it can be a fun and memorable experience. Some gulets are better suited for sailing than others, so it’s best to mention your interest in sailing to your sales expert, who can help you find the right gulet for you.

After signing the contract, a 50% payment of the boat rental price is required to secure your gulet cruise. The remaining 50% can be paid 60 days before the charter date. It is important to comply with the payment conditions to avoid any issues or cancellation of the charter.

In the event that a charterer cancels their reservation, the deposit paid for the gulet rental is non-refundable. Additionally, if the charterer cancels the reservation, no payment will be refunded. We highly recommend that charterers carefully consider their travel plans before making a reservation to avoid cancellation fees.

Private Croatia Yacht Charters from Goolets

By Heidi Sarna

A private yacht charter in Croatia is a great way to travel, at your own pace and with your own peeps.

They’re a great alternative to cruising on the big cruise ships with thousands of others or with dozens of strangers on traditional yachts plying the Croatian coast and Greek Isles.

Do the Math — Private Croatia Yacht Charters Make Cents

There’s good reason private yacht charters are very popular these days, as there are more choices than ever at various price points. If you add it up, you’ll see you could wind up paying about the same to be part of a private charter versus booking an individual cabin for $1,500 or $2,500 per person on a traditional cruise.

Companies like the Slovenian-based charter agency  Goolets represent many yacht and gulet owners who charter their crewed yachts for private Croatia cruises, with Goolets vetting them to ensure a quality charter experience.

Goolets have been in the business for nearly 20 years and they know the gulet and yacht market in Croatia very well.

The Goolets team manage the process and handle the many details needed for this kind of holiday. They source the right yacht for your budget and needs, making sure crew is in place and that itineraries and logistics are set — a lot of work that you don’t want to do yourself.

“We inspect all of our vessels regularly and we also keep in touch with the owners, and captains on a weekly basis. We only work with trusted vessels, crews and owners — we are very very selective. After the cruise we also collect reviews from our clients which gives us important insight,” Goolets spokesperson Miha Sever told me.

Goolets’ Yacht Sizes

Goolets’ private Croatia yacht charters range from four cabins to 18 cabins (carrying typically 8 to about 36 passengers).

Gulet is a Turkish term derived from the French word “goélette” and the Italian “goletta.” These traditional-style 2- and 3-masted yachts are based on vessels that were once used as trading and fishing boats. Much like the “canal barge” cruises of France, the “gulet” yachts of Croatia, Greece and Turkey have been transformed into luxury conveyances for holidays (with engines, as well as sail power, to get to the next port or bay when needed). Generally, gulets are a bit more intimate than yachts, with fewer cabins; often just four to six cabins to accommodate up to 12 passengers.

A yacht , on the other hand, may or may not have sails. Like gulets, some yachts are basic and many are very high-end and luxurious, and often called “super yachts. Yachts are often larger and with more cabins, as many as 10 to 18 cabins to accommodate 20 to 36 passengers.”

The size and level of luxury of both yachts and gulets varies greatly as do their fares. There is something for nearly everyone.

What’s Included In A Private Croatia Yacht Charter?

The base price of most Croatia yacht charters include the following:

  • The vessel with full crew (captain, mates, and on the higher-end, cabin steward/ess)
  • VAT (tax) and fuel for cruising
  • Cabins with bedding & bathrooms with towels (on the high-end yachts, they are serviced daily)
  • All cabins are en-suite
  • Use of water “toys” — from stand-up paddleboards (SUP) to snorkeling equipment, inflatable kayaks and slides, to, on the high-end yachts, SEABOBs and jet skis (the exact water toys will vary from boat to boat; and in some cases there might be extra charge for the use of jet skis and for the fuel used for motorized watersports)
  • Services of an onboard coordinator — a cruise manager for the high-end yachts/gulets, or a chief steward/ess or the captain, on more moderately priced yachts/gulets, to help plan each day and suggest where to find a great beach, good restaurants & shopping etc.

What’s NOT Included In A Private Croatia Yacht Charter Base Price?

  • Port excursions

Meals and drinks are added on to the charter package, with different food and drinks packages to choose from.

Typically, plan to add on about 30% of the total charter cost. For instance, for a 20,000 EURO charter of a 10-passenger yacht, the meals/drinks would be an additional 7,000 EURO or so.

Gulets Offer a Sparkling Sailing Experience in Croatia

Why Charter Gulets in Croatia from Goolets? Why not!?

By Max Hartshorne GoNOMAD Editor

Laura Orsini is a travel blogger who lives in Laguna Beach, California. Earlier this year, she chartered a Gulet from Goolets.net to travel through beautiful Croatia . Gulets are boats built in Croatia that are the perfect vessel for exploring the country’s craggy coastline.

Enjoying breakfast aboard the gulet, contemplating an exciting day of sports and swimming in Croatia. Goolets photo.

When did you charter a gulet yacht from Goolets? Tell us about your trip and when it took place and where?

We chartered the yacht through Goolets and left for our week-long trip in mid-June 2018. Our route was through coastal Croatia with the following itinerary: Split – Milna – Vis – Hvar – Vela Luka – Korčula – Sumartin – Milna – Split.

I had a wonderful time exploring Croatia by gulet! Being aboard a gulet allowed us to see so much of the Croatian islands in just a week. The water was just as turquoise as I had imagined and the Croatian towns we visited were filled with so much history and beauty.

front of boat

We spent our days floating in the sea, paddle boarding around the islands and relaxing on the boat. And, of course, the Goolets team was wonderful to work with — providing support throughout our vacation experience.

Laura Orsini, a California-based travel blogger who chartered a gulet with friends last year in Croatia.

Tell us about the people who went with you on the cruise. How old and what relation to you?

On the cruise was myself (age 29), my boyfriend (age 30) and our friend (age 32).

Had you ever chartered a yacht before you did the trip with Goolets?

We have chartered day yachts but never a week-long gulet trip. This was our first!

What were you afraid of when you first considered taking the boat? Were there things that you thought you would be afraid of that turned out not to be a problem?

The only thing that I was afraid of was the possibility of seasickness. Typically, I don’t get seasick but I had also never spent a week on a gulet before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Luckily, I felt fine the whole time! Croatia has wonderfully calm waters so we were pretty much smooth sailing the whole week.

What Went Differently?

What is the main challenge is this type of vacation? Is there anything that went totally differently after you set sail that you didn’t expect?

Watersports are a big part of the experience on a chartered gulet.

Croatia is a popular destination and can become quite crowded in certain places — one challenge was figuring out how to avoid the crowds.

Luckily, spending a week on a chartered gulet allows for flexibility in your itinerary. It was amazing being able to change course if we found a place was too crowded — and this was how we found some of our favorite spots!

What advice would you have for a future traveler interested in chartering a Gulet?

Communicate your preferences to the Goolets team. Would you like to see all the major ‘hot spots’ in your destination or would you rather seek the less ‘discovered’ places? Would you prefer to spend your days swimming in the sea or on land exploring? Or both? Let the team know and they can make informed suggestions for your itinerary.

What did you bring with you that turned out to be completely unnecessary when you got to the boat?

I brought my own towel but didn’t end up needing to use it because the towels were provided.

boat view

There wasn’t really anything that I felt I should’ve packed but didn’t. We did purchase a pool float to use in the sea while on the cruise. Our crew blew it up for us and we tied it to the boat with a rope — the ultimate way to relax!

Tell us about any storms or other hazards you faced during your yacht charter?

During our last day, it began to rain in the late afternoon — as a result, we changed course and stopped in Milna for the night. Although we had visited before, we were happy to stop by again and check out a different restaurant! Other than that, the weather was perfect.

Generally, how much of a sailor does someone have to be to feel comfortable taking a Goolets vessel out?

I have zero sailing experience and I felt completely comfortable the entire week. While we didn’t do any sailing, our crew was knowledgeable about all things boat-related and we left it completely up to them!

Did you have a captain on board who helped to navigate and take care of sailing?

The pretty Croatian coast. Laura Orsini photos.

Yes, we had a captain and a deckhand on board to navigate the boat and plan out the itinerary. While the boat had sailing capabilities, we used the engine for the duration of the trip.

What other staff was aboard the boat during your trip?

Also on board with us was the chef, who prepared incredible meals daily, and the hostess who assisted the chef and helped with any requests from our group.

Now that you’ve done this once, where else would you like to go on a charter cruise?

Next up, I would love to visit Turkey! I’ve heard incredible things about their coast and would love to spend a week exploring a country I’ve never visited before!

Tell us a few secret places that you and your friends discovered when you chartered the boat?

Each day we would try to find a secluded cove where we would spend the day swimming, paddle boarding and relaxing. The clearest waters we found were on the island of Vis near an abandoned submarine base — it was such a great day exploring.
