Monaco Yacht Club: An Exclusive Oasis For Marine Lovers

10 stories about the districts of Monaco

Looking down on the Yacht Club from Monaco’s exclusive seawater Spa, “ Thermes Marins ”, the new club-house really is a magnificent icon of multi-decked architecture – inaugurated in 2014 and designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.

Only in the Principality’s marina could you confuse this giant structure for the yachts around it that it resembles – a yacht mirage with a gorgeous deck with luxurious swimming pool and terraces for dancing. Splendid enough for meetings of the most discerning yacht enthusiasts, including the glitterati and “Three Comma” billionaires that frequent it.

Yachts Beyond the Reach of Mere Mortals

Some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world dock here to take in the city’s pleasures, particularly during the iconic Monaco Yacht Show. You can wander around marvelling at all of the gadgets designers can inlay on these boats like the 348-foot-long AMADEA one of the largest and most distinctive superyachts in the world with its six distinctive guest decks. Or perhaps gaze at the 365-foot-long TIS, one of the largest and most regal yachts to be launched this year.

These superyachts, like the Yacht Club itself are like private islands and wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. If billionaires Bernard Arnault or Larry Page or Larry Ellison come calling, Monaco Yacht Club sets the stage perfectly.

Home of the Grimaldi Dynasty

For over 600 years from the 12th century onwards, the Grimaldi stronghold at Port Hercule, including where the Yacht Club now preens itself, was one of the prized naval assets on the Mediterranean. Its strategic location served more than once to change the course of history.

It was around the time of the reign of Charles III of Monaco that the Principality’s reputation as an international haven of luxury and wealth took off. And Charles III had the vision to encourage the development of Monaco as a magnet for international regattas of renown to which the world flocked.

Historic Regatta Heaven

The first of these regattas were held in the bay of Monaco in 1862, so successful that in 1888 the “Société des Régates” was established by Prince Charles III and his son Prince Albert I , affectionately known as the “Oceanographer Prince”.

Almost a century of famous regattas preceded the founding in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Club brings together more than 2000 members from 66 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position in the International yachting world.

Prince Albert’s Presidency

In April 1984, with Prince Albert’s Presidency, he developed new international events such as the Primo Cup, the biggest gathering of monotype yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. Prince Albert also put emphasis on classic Yachting with the organization from 1994 of the Monaco Classic Week for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts.

Notably, it was the first visit of Atlantic 2010 (replica of the 1903 three-mast schooner on which Charlie Barr in 1905 set the best time for an Atlantic crossing) to the Principality. Another icon, the SS Delphine (1921) steam-boat made a welcome return. It was aboard this beauty that three world leaders, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill, negotiated at least part of the 1945 Yalta Agreement.

Yacht Seasons are typically opened with ultra-private concerts at YCM with celebrities like Sir Elton John in 2016, Duran Duran in 2017, and Sting last year. It was yet another global star Lionel Richie singing “All Night Long” this September who delighted the many boat owners and YCM members. “All Night Long” was attended by YCM President, Prince Albert II and a host of international personalities including actor-producer Samuel L. Jackson, basketball legend Magic Johnson, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and fashion designer Domenico Dolce, one of the two behind the eponymous brand D&G.

Regatta and Sports Heaven with a Golden Future

The Monaco Yacht Club from its beginnings embraced and has nurtured a prestige Regatta program that has accelerated and taken on new dimensions under Prince Albert’s Presidency.

It is worth mentioning the Primo Cup again as it has quickly established itself as the big meeting that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite. Just a few other examples of stand-out Regattas enjoyed by YCMmembers include:

Monaco Swan One Design,  (9th-13th April 2019) organized in conjunction with the Yacht Club de Monaco,  was the first event in the 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.

Monaco Globe Week with the IMOCA 60  – 60-foot monohulls being among the fastest modern racing monohulls have raced on a course totalling 1,300 nautical miles embracing some of the most emblematic marks in the Western Mediterranean.

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series  offers a monthly programme alternating high level regattas and training weekends for onedesigns.

As well as the Primo Cup another innovation worth a double mention here is  Monaco Classic Week. Persuaded that the reading of the past holds keys for the future Prince Albert fostered the creation and coordination during five years of a unique circuit for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, without forgetting the acquisition of Tuiga in 1995, since becoming the flagship of the YCM. More recently the wave continued with the launching in 2005 of the “La Belle Classe” label.

The whole yachting world continues to look to Monaco to organize its most prestigious events. Within the last 12 months, 200 guests from the America’s Cup community from around the world gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to celebrate the launch of  the Prada Cup – the Challenger Selection Series for the 36th America’s Cup  to be presented by Prada in January 2021 in Auckland – deemed as “ the quest for oldest trophy in sport ”, the America’s Cup. Not to forget  World Rowing with the  Prince Albert II Challenge , a 6000m coastal race organised by the Societe Nautique de Monaco.

The Enthusiasm and Promise of Monaco’s Youth at YCM

Looking to the future is the Monaco Sports Academy which provides support to gifted young Monaco sailors and sportsmen taking on the world. The Academy is a close collaboration between the Yacht Club de Monaco, presided by Prince Albert and its General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri, and Philippe Ghanem who is an active member of the Club. They share a common goal: to help young athletes living in Monaco reach the highest level in sport.

Also founded in 1970 by Prince Rainier III, the Sports Section of Y.C.M. adapts training to youngsters from as young as age six from initiation to competition and at every age.

Look out for the Monaco Optimist Team Race from 9-12 January 2020. The regatta is reserved for 20 teams of young sailors, all under 14. YCM invites the most competitive clubs with emphasis on tactics and above all team-work.

Full of youthful energy and promise is  the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge  next held on 30 June-4 July 2020. The Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organises the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which is unique in the world.

How to become a new member of the Yacht Club

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco needs to be introduced by two “sponsors” from YCM. The sponsor’s letter of introduction will explain the applicant’s motives for joining the Club. Prince Albert, President of the Yacht Club, presides over the meetings of the admissions’ committee. The role of the sponsor is essential. The latter, must integrate him into the life of the Yacht Club, accompany him, present him to the other members but also involve him in organized events, whether they be social or sports.

The sponsor also undertakes to ensure that his “protégé” embraces the YCM’s philosophy and values, will actively engage in the Club’s life and keep its reputation at the pinnacle.

A Regal Club and Natural Host of Prestigious Events

The Yacht club reaches well beyond being a club for owners of yachts and superyachts. It is actually an immense infrastructure akin to a multi-tiered island that organises not only events connected to the yachts and regattas but also all kind of sports and social events, dances and entertainment. High society balls, conferences, exclusive business gatherings and prestigious auctions are just part of the kaleidoscope of activity.

The members of the club and their guests have at their disposition restaurants with Michelin Star chefs (including the exclusive 1909) gyms and a library – and a spa-zone, not to mention the gorgeous pool and terraces overlooking the azure bay. There is a truly great bar, a hive of social contact, with an international reputation and winner of awards for its unique cocktails and the skills of its bar staff. Endless discovery is to be found in each private niche of this island-club.

Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Home Environment Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Established by Prince Rainier III in 1953, the Yacht Club de Monaco is the emblem of Monegasque yachting. Since 2014, it has had its own emblematic building, a striking piece of architecture by Britain’s Norman Foster.

With its sleek lines and architecture reminiscent of an ocean liner, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s headquarters building never fails to provoke a reaction. Officially unveiled in 2014, it was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Norman Foster.

“This building has been designed like a miniature city, integrated into the existing urban landscape of Monaco,” explains the architect, who was also behind the Millennium Bridge (2000), Millau Viaduct (2004), Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona (2007) and Vieux Port in Marseille (2013).

Chaired since 1984 by Prince Albert II , the Yacht Club de Monaco, with its 2,000 members representing 60 nationalities and prestigious yachts , illustrates Monaco’s historic role in the world of yachting .

The first regattas organised in the Principality date back to 1862, while the first international motorboat races – which arrived with the development of the first combustion engines – were contested in Port Hercule in 1904.

Today, the Yacht Club de Monaco organises a number of regattas, such as Monaco Classic Week, the Primo Cup and, more recently, the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge One.

“As part of our ‘Monaco, capital of yachting’ project, through this event the Principality helps to bring together manufacturers, engineers, shipyards, students and ship owners to share their experiences and respond to the energy and environmental challenges facing the nautical sector,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The YCM has two influential ambassadors: Le Tuiga, considered by sailor Eric Tabarly to be “one of the most beautiful yachts in the world”, takes part in major classic yacht events, while the Seaexplorer (formerly Malizia II) , the eco-friendly vessel that took Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic in summer 2019 to attend the UN Climate Summit, finished fifth in the Vendée Globe 2020, the first time it has taken part in the race.

America's Cup Match Racing

Next week, when the 37 th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup kicks off in Barcelona with its opening ceremony, the contest that began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight between the fastest British and American sloops (the yacht America won handily) will come back to Europe for the first time in 14 years.

The move to the Catalan capital from the 2021 event in New Zealand will make it more accessible to sailing fans in Europe, and even North Americans who want to view the fast, technical AC75 foiling boats in person. Barcelona has been preparing itself for a surge of spectators for the “return” of the Cup, which was held twice in Valencia, Spain, in the aughts.

The America’s Cup may be billed as “the race with no second place,” but it takes three months of racing and four events for one of five Challenger teams to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, and that winner will race Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final. The racing runs from August through October, and this year includes a first-time all-women’s America’s Cup as well as an event for the world’s best youth sailors.

Having Barcelona as a venue was a smart move, partly for the gorgeous beaches fronting the race course on the Med. But there is also the city’s magnificent architecture and sense of history as well as vibrant arts, culture and, of course, no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants.

There are many five-star hotels in the area, but the smartest and most thrilling way to see racing is by water. The vessel options are wide-ranging—from weeklong superyacht charters to luxury suites on a cruise ships to day trips on sailboats with Michelin-starred cuisine. Many can be combined with on-land stays and even cruises to other parts of Spain as part of the itineraries.

One important note: Four zones adjoining the race course allow spectator boats. Before chartering a vessel, be sure to find out which zone the boat will operate in, because that impacts how close you are to the racing.

Here are 9 options to suit the most avid Cup aficionados or those visiting Barcelona who want to sip champagne and watch the AC75 foiling boats battle it out.

Superyacht ‘Resilience’

yacht club monaco hotel

Edmiston is offering charters aboard the 212-foot Resilience during the America’s Cup. The ISA-built superyacht, designed by Enrico Gobbi, features a mosaic-tiled pool, circular fire pit and a BBQ for a ringside lunch. Post-race pampering comes via the steam room, sundeck jacuzzi and gym, and there’s even a self-playing Edelweiss piano and projector for evening entertainment. The vessel sleeps 12 across seven cabins. From September 16, weekly charters start at about $645,000 (€600,000).

Explora Journeys

yacht club monaco hotel

The soon-to-be-launched Explora II looks very much like its sistership, the Explora I : onyx finishes, self-playing Steinways, on-deck Technogym bikes, a spa with a Himalayan salt room, Dunhill cigar den and a wine cellar boasting decades-old Chateau Latour. With 461 luxury suites, how was the Explora II chosen to become an America’s Cup viewing platform? The idea came from the top down.

“I love sailing and believe the Med is the most beautiful sea on earth,” Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division of MSC Group, told Robb Report during a visit aboard Explora I in Barcelona. “We thought if only our customers could also experience [the America’s Cup], we can call it the ocean state of mind.”

Explora II launches in mid-September, with itineraries planned to coincide with the different Cup events. On October 6, the vessel will be in port for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and Puig Women’s Races. Guests can take a walk to the official race village and experience its excitement before watching the races from their suites. A 10-night journey starts from $5,210 per guest.

The Almanac Sailing Experience

yacht club monaco hotel

Barcelona’s Almanac hotel has a romantic-gastronomic experience that offers guests front-row seats on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 sailboat with a capacity for 10 guests. Besides the racing, the package includes two nights at the hotel. The boat comes with the hotel’s branded slippers and Jimmy Boyd bespoke amenities. Enjoy a selection of customized Cava Bellinis from the pop-up bar. Chefs from the hotels’ restaurant will also serve up shrimp salad and fennel ceviche paired with organic Spanish wines. The boat can be chartered every Saturday from August 31 to October 26. The Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin starts on August 29 and lasts through Sept. 8. There’s also the Puig Women’s Race (first all-female America’s Cup in its 171-year history) and, of course, the America’s Cup finals in October. Prices start at $2,940 per couple.

Superyacht ‘C’

yacht club monaco hotel

For a majestic week-long cruise that incorporates America’s Cup summer races and possible side itineraries in Costa Dorada, Sitges and Formentera, Camper & Nicholsons’ expansive 177-ft C is the flashy option, defined by Minotti furniture, lacquered panels and a hamman. It also sleeps 12 in six cabins that feature a master and two VIP suites. Its chase boat also offers a great opportunity for side trips. Weekly charters from Sept. 18-October 31 run from about $513,000 or €400,000.

Sailing Yacht ‘Imagine’

yacht club monaco hotel

UK adventure specialists Pelorus offer a private seat on an elegant sailing boat seeped in America’s Cup history. Built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, Imagine is a 110-footer that served as an official viewing platform for the America’s Cup in Auckland, but it has also completed three global circumnavigations. Beyond its sailing chops, it’s a beautiful vessel, with a blonde, teak-lined deck, large salon and dining area, and three cabins for sleeping seven guests. It will be available from October 12 for the America’s Cup final. Pelorus is also offering to bookend the week with trips to Majorca and Ibiza. About $101,000 (£79,121)

Superyacht ‘Diane’

yacht club monaco hotel

Also available from Edmiston, the 141-ft Diane can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms for the week. The interior is all about soft hues, featuring cream leather and white marble, boasting a bar and plenty of outdoor seating for watching the races. For the non-race legs, guests can take to the water via the large beach club, complete with seabobs and wakeboards. It has a Balearics license, making a hop to Ibiza or Majorca a possibility. Weekly charter rates from September 23 run about $150,000 per week (€140,000)

Black Tomato Cup Package

yacht club monaco hotel

Incorporating a city-stay, Black Tomato’s America’s Cup getaway includes a day’s private day charter to view the race, plus five nights at the Mandarin Oriental as well as visiting the regatta course and different bases of the America’s Cup teams for an insider’s look at the operations and technology. As a dayboat, its Bali Yacht Saxador 400 GTO can accommodate 11 guests. It sets sail from Port Olympic, giving guests a sweeping view of the city on one side and the regatta course on the other. The boat has access to the blue area (for preferred charter boats) on the front line. From $12,750 per person, based on two people.

Superyacht ‘Quasar’

yacht club monaco hotel

Camper & Nicholsons recently introduced the 153-foot Quasar to the charter market and what a great way to end the Med season than by viewing the America’s Cup. It has six cabins (including two master suites) that can accommodate 12 guests, along excellent outdoor seating, an upper salon that joins the aft deck area for viewing the races or dining al-fresco. The beach club has a large selection of water toys. Visits to scenic Med ports around Barcelona are also possible on the week’s charter, which start at about $232,000 (€210,000).

Superyacht ‘Kiawah’

yacht club monaco hotel

For front row seats on day charters in the blue zone (the third-closest area to the races), official charter partner ac37 Sailcharters offers different types of vessels and packages. The 110-foot Kiawah features a cocktail lunch on board, a specialized lecture from an expert sailor, and an AV system to follow the race in real time. From August 22 through October 11, daily rates are about $34,000 (€30,800) and during the America’s Cup finals October 12-27, rates move to about $41,000 (€37,400).

For a long time, perhaps the only comparison one could draw between Monaco and Gulf capital Saudi Arabia was a lack of personal income tax. Now, Saudi is looking to become a bit more like Monaco when it comes to its lavish yachting industry.

The Kingdom has called upon Monaco Marina Management to help run its space-age yacht club in Amaala – one of the high-end tourism destinations along the Red Sea. The Yacht Club de Monaco company will help create events, a sailing academy, and support with training and recruitment.

The same Monaco Yacht Club signed a deal with Amaala’s regulatory body in August to host events in Saudi.

Saudi’s Sustainability Push

Saudi Arabia says it wants to lead the way in sustainable travel and tourism , calling for the world to back its Sustainable Tourism Global Center – a “multi-national coalition” for sustainability.

Announced two years ago by the country’s crown prince, the center is under the banner of the Saudi Green Initiative from Mohammed bin Salman to promote environmentalism and green energy.

At a virtual address at the Skift Global Forum 2023 last week, Gloria Guevara, Head of the Sustainable Tourism Global Center and Chief Special Advisor, called upon listeners to trust in the kingdom to help change the industry for the better.

She said: “It is clear that the sustainable agenda is more relevant than ever before.”

“The travel and tourism sector is responsible for 8% of greenhouse emissions, 12% of food waste and in terms of water consumption, travelers consume two to three times more than residents. Overcrowding, waste from travelers and deterioration of quality life for locals due to lack of destination planning.”

“Now, while positive steps are being made to address climate change. We have multiple challenges. We don’t share enough knowledge or best practices with one another. We do not have a good [sustainability] tracking system in place. There is no one place to consolidate and find all solutions and training related to our sector.”

One of the world’s largest exporters of oil , Saudi Arabia continues efforts to change its economy – and its public image – away from pumping crude. The Sustainable Tourism Global Center and Skift Advisory have partnered on the report, “Best Practices for Local Sourcing in Destinations,” which will be coming out later this year.

Today, there is a growing call for destination leaders from DMOs and DMCs, tourism business owners, and governments to take action, assess their supply chains, and identify opportunities to create more locally sourced tourism strategies.

In this soon-to-be-released report , Skift offers guidance on how destination leaders can create a new path to sustainable benefit from tourism, centered on sourcing locally — one that purposefully integrates the social-cultural, environmental, and economic implications of sustainable supply chains in ways that improve the health of the destinations where they occur.

The report also highlights best practices from successful destinations around the world, supporting destination leaders to reimagine what their local sourcing should look like and how they can optimize their economic return on investment while still protecting natural and cultural heritage.

Jeddah Gets Its Own Development Company For Tourism Sector

To keep things under government watch, Saudi Arabia has created yet another development company for tourism. Seaside city Jeddah gets the Al Balad Development Company, part of the crown prince’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)

Other development arms of PIF include Soudah Development for the recently-unveiled Soudah Peaks project ; Red Sea Global for Red Sea and Amaala ultra-luxury tourism sites; Diriyah Gate Development Authority headed by Jerry Inzerillo, among others.

Al Balad Development takes charge of Jeddah’s historical district of the same name.

The company will focus on improving the district’s infrastructure, overseeing the restoration of historic buildings in Al Balad, and developing service facilities as well as recreational, residential, commercial, hotel and office spaces. The overall project development area will comprise approximately 2.5 million square meters, with a total built-up area of 3.7 million square meters. This includes 9,300 residential units, 1,800 hotel units and around 1.3 million square meters of commercial and office space .

While Saudi’s ambitions to build super-luxury hotels for Westerners often appear in headlines, the kingdom is also heavily focused on its cultural tourism sector. Sites such as AlUla have been praised for their commitment to local traditions; while mega-projects such as Inzerillo’s Diriyah Gate are spending upwards of $50 billion to make the country’s UNESCO Heritage sites something visited by millions.

Westin Hotel Opens In Ras Al Khaimah Next Year

Marriott is on a signing spree in the UAE’s northern emirate. In the span of a year, the group has announced its Le Meridien brand in Ras Al Khaimah, followed by the more flamboyant W brand, and now the more classic-luxury Westin flag.

The group’s VP of lodging development in EMEA, Saahil Lalit confirmed the signing , adding that construction is already “well underway.” The Westin will have 257 keys and is expected to open by next year, stating it will be one of the first hotels to open within Marriott’s new Ras Al Khaimah trio.

The W Al Marjan Island is expected to open in 2027 and the Le Meridien in 2026.

The Westin is the latest addition to the emirate’s development boom. Ever since the Wynn resort was announced in 2022, operators have rushed to the once-quiet city. Nobu will bring its own hotel and restaurant; Accor will bring Pullman and Sofitel; and Minor will soon open a flagship Anantara.

Dubai Airports Commits To Better Care for Travelers With Autism

The operators of Dubai International Airport are committing to be more welcoming towards travelers with autism. Dubai Airports has signed an MoU with the city’s Autism Center to make the busy airport more inclusive for those with autism and other hidden disabilities.

Measures include travel planners for pre-travel preparation and an “Autism Friendly Route”, offering a prioritized route for check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding, which can be availed when wearing the sunflower lanyard. The airport also says it has deployed specially trained guest experience staff to support travelers with hidden disabilities.

Boutique Hotel to Open in UAE Capital

Ever since it first struck oil, the UAE has opted to build some of the most spectacular – sometimes outlandish – hotels in the region. The ‘seven-star’ Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the palace-turned-resort Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, and the upcoming $3.9 billion Wynn in Ras Al Khaimah all showcase this.

Moving in a different direction, Abu Dhabi will soon welcome a small, boutique-feeling resort of just 22 rooms. Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat opens before the end of the year and will be one of the smallest hotels in the country. CEO of operating company Minor, Dillip Rajakarier said: “This ultra-private property offers exceptional facilities for full buy-outs, especially those seeking an intimate boutique experience unlike anywhere else in the UAE.”

Egypt Tourism Finally Back on Track

Egypt is seeking to double the number of visitors to the country in the next five years, its tourism official told The Associated Press. Egypt is aiming at reaching 30 million visitors by 2028, as its once-thriving tourism sector recovers from the pandemic and global tensions that have stifled travel in parts, Tourism and Antiquities Minister Ahmed Issa said.

“We’re seeing unparalleled demand, unprecedented demand for travel into Egypt,” Issa said in an interview. He said Egypt had received 10 million tourists in the first eight months of 2023, and was “well on track to achieve around 15 million this year, which is going to be a record year for the tourism industry.”

Saudia Airline Goes Through a Rebrand

The national carrier of Saudi Arabia, Saudia, has had a facelift. A new livery has been introduced, along with a “digital transformation” project rollout. The rebrand “marks the beginning of a new era” for the airline.

The new brand color identity, comprised of green, blue, and sand, represents Saudia’s aim to expand its fleet and destinations, connecting the world to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the Kingdom’s authenticity and deep-rooted values, a press release said. The rebrand also extends to cabin crew uniforms.

The Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates its 70th anniversary!

yacht club monaco hotel

The Yacht Club de Monaco was founded by Prince Rainier III in 1953, and H.S.H. Prince Albert II has been the organisation's President since 1984. The Club is famously associated with the maritime 'art de vivre' and hosts prestigious events that ensure Monaco is at the centre of the sailing world throughout the year.

The 2023 season began in style for younger sailors, with 64 competitors aged under 14 from 16 nations arriving in January for the 13th Monaco Optimist Team Race. The international elite then came together off the Principality for some 120 top level races!

This winter, one-design racing is dropping anchor in the Principality. The best J/70 crews (a class of regatta yachts, most of which adopted Monaco as their training base to prepare for major races) will be in the waters off the Principality from 2 to 5 February for the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, ahead of the Primo Cup-Trophée Crédit Suisse from 2 to 5 March. That event, since its creation in 1985 by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, has established itself as the biggest European one-design elite meeting in the Mediterranean.

Following the course set by the Principality, the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) is also committed to sustainable development. Organised from 20 to 26 March by the Albert II Foundation in conjunction with the Oceanographic Museum and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, Monaco Ocean Week is an important fixture of the Monegasque calendar, a prominent event that aims to raise awareness about the conservation of marine ecosystems. The Yacht Club de Monaco will be contributing to the week's activities  by hosting the 12th Environmental Symposium on the theme "Encouraging the future of more responsible yachting".

The future is a priority for the YCM, as reflected in the hosting of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, which is now into its 11th year. From 3 to 8 July, this meeting on the theme of alternative energy sources will bring together young engineers and stakeholders from the yachting industry. In its sights will be the first E-Boat Rally, which will offer the public a glimpse at the future of yachting.

The climax of a busy 2023 will be the famous Monaco Classic Week – La Belle Classe. The charm of yachting will be calling at the Principality from 13 to 16 September, an opportunity to discover the most prestigious vintage sailboats, classic motor yachts. This year's 16th edition of the event will be particularly special, as Monaco marks the centenary of the birth of Prince Rainier III.

The varies and prestigious calendar is worthy of the YCM's "Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting" strategy, aimed at positioning the Principality as a leading centre of excellence in this sector!

Monaco travel advice: The best luxury hotels in Monaco

Looking for the best hotels in Monaco to book a room in? If you're visiting Monaco for the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show this September, take a look at these top hotels offering luxury accommodation in the principality.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Twenty paces from the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the Hôtel de Paris is such a well-worn pied-à-terre for high rollers that their superstitions have left a physical mark: the lobby's bronze statue of Louis XIV riding has had the horse’s right knee shined by the generations who have rubbed it for luck.

The hotel began welcoming guests just a year after the opening of the Casino de Monte-Carlo in 1863, and was designed to rival Parisian institutions like the Hôtel du Louvre and the Grand Hôtel. The glitterati arrived on cue, US President Grant rubbing epaulettes with Grand Duke “Serge” of Russia, while artists Verne, Verdi, and Dumas feasted their imaginations on her belle époque beauty.

Extravagance was the only rule in the hotel’s early days. Beams were installed in the ceiling of one room so Empress Elizabeth of Austria could practise the trapeze before bed, and one grand duke always arrived with 50 gardeners, who would work through the night so that he could open his window on to a new garden every morning. Sumptuous balls were a house speciality, from Errol Flynn’s 1950 wedding to the 1956 marriage of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly.

These glamorous ghosts are part of what has kept the gloss on the Hôtel de Paris. Twenty-first-century starlets and moguls tread the same tiles as belle époque bounders and 50s film stars. The hotel lets guests dive into its illustrious history through its beautifully kept marble halls, characterful antiques and suites named after famous guests, such as the Princess Grace Diamond Suite with costs starting from €40,000 a night.

Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo

In Edith Wharton’s 1905 novel The House of Mirth her character is drawn to this Monte Carlo hideaway, with its “exotic coquetry of architecture, the studied tropicality of the gardens”. The Metropole today remains Monaco’s snuggest sanctuary. Much of this is smoke and mirrors – it is less than 100 metres from Casino Square – but artfully composed box hedges, and an extremely long drive, give it the feeling of a secret garden. The organic atmosphere is enhanced in the lobby with fantastical flower arrangements.

Since it opened in 1889, guests have felt comfortable enough at the Metropole to indulge their whims. The concierge once had to buy a metre of grass so a guest could practise golf in his suite, and on another occasion, staff used a crane to lift a throne to the Presidential Suite for a visiting king.

The hotel was renovated and reopened in 2004, redesigned by Jacques Garcia, Karl Lagerfeld and Didier Gomez. The resulting atmosphere is honey coloured, velvety, deeply upholstered and low-lit. The monolithic lobby bar feels like somewhere Howard Carter might have sipped his last G&T before setting off to find King Tut. Upstairs, three signature suites – Prestige, Azur and Carré d’Or – cater to different tastes, including one with a Philippe Starck bathroom and another with a view of the Grand Prix circuit.

Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo

The Hermitage is a neo-classical glamour queen of a hotel. If Marie Antoinette had been born two centuries later she would have delivered her bon mots from the balcony of a Hermitage suite – and approved of the complimentary Ladurée macarons and fat white roses. Modern divas from Kim Kardashian to Lindsay Lohan meet journalists in the nooks of the hotel’s marble wedding cake of a lobby before retreating into its hushed, pearly-tiled maze of corridors.

The Hermitage was built in 1900, literally in the shadow of the Hôtel de Paris, but ready to compete. The Salle Belle Epoque ballroom was designed by painter and orientalist Gabriel Ferrier; Gustave Eiffel penned the glass dome of the Winter Garden.

Fantastical parties here have attracted jet setters since the jet was invented; for example, the opening gala of the Bar of the Scorpions (now the Crystal Bar), held in 1969 on Princess Grace’s 40th birthday – her Zodiac sign was Scorpio and she invited only other Scorpios. The Princess was dressed by Balenciaga in a black ballgown and welcomed Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who arrived in an oversized cape with two scorpions embroidered on it.

Renovated in the 1970s and early 2000s, the rooms are romantic, with rococo furniture upholstered in pastel silks and velvets. But the 361-square-metre Diamond Suite Penthouse is real princess territory. Decorated in taupe, aubergine and gold, it features two sprawling terraces, three bedrooms, three living rooms, two dressing rooms, a playroom and 360-degree views of the principality.

Views are the hotel’s greatest luxury, and the Crystal Terrace is a good spot to enjoy them with a cocktail in hand. A few steps away, the Michelin-starred Yannick Alléno restaurant serves stylish cuisine and is one of the best restaurants to visit in Monte-Carlo during the Monaco Yacht Show .

Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel

The low, sprawling art deco building of The Monte-Carlo Beach hotel was finished in 1929 to lure in high-end summer tourism and the American gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell was drafted in to fill it with fashionable people. She was on good terms with jet sets from Cairo to New York (she introduced Maria Callas to Aristotle Onassis) and thanks to her the ’20s roared well into the next decade at Monte-Carlo Beach.

A 2009 makeover from Parisian designer India Mahdavi has returned the hotel’s style to its chic, deco prime. The two-bedroom Sunshine Suite features a spa pool and private terrace – but all the rooms are fabulous, with muted colours, stylised prints and “strong visual references from the Riviera of the 30s”, as Mahdavi put it. It’s easy to imagine the crimped starlets and bow-tied bounders lounging around the pool today. Indeed, Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted keeping up his Gatsby role, smoking cigars and playing poker under the cabanas of the Monte-Carlo Beach Club, while Beyoncé occasionally zips in by yacht.

The hotel is not strictly speaking in Monaco – it’s just over the eastern border in France – but this location makes it the bolthole of choice for visitors who want a break from the principality’s pneumatic glamour. One Michelin-starred Elsa, its bright restaurant and breezy terrace, is a great lunch escape during the Monaco Yacht Show.

Villa La Vigie

So it’s not a hotel, and technically it’s just over the border in France, but Villa la Vigie is the most exclusive address around. Sitting high on the Pointe de la Veille promentary, its vistas sweep from Monaco to Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (the views are so good that the Germans seized it as an observation post in the Second World War).

The neoclassical monolith was built in 1902 by the English baronet William Ingram, owner of The Illustrated London News and a liberal politician. He held lavish parties, where his rare animals roamed the gardens and tropical birds fluttered freely. Forty years later the Nazis were more troublesome tenants, digging trenches and planting mines in the gardens to protect their prize. When they left, La Vigie was renovated and the lush gardens restored (and de-mined).

The villa’s most famous resident was Karl Lagerfeld, who set up camp each summer from the late ’80s to the early ’90s with a brigade of supermodels and fashion royalty. Today the villa can be rented for holidays on a weekly or monthly basis.  Sleek interior décor in pale tones and sumptuous fabrics allow the elegant architecture to shine, while tall windows flood the place with light.

There are six bedrooms, two dressing rooms and a 237-square-metre terrace that wraps around two sides of the building; there is no finer spot on the Riviera for a sundowner. Privacy is a major draw for high net worth visitors, so the private road and forest-cloaked gardens are a big plus, as is the sea-view spa pool. An electric car will whisk you to nearby Monte-Carlo Beach Club, where a private 10-person tent on the beach awaits La Vigie guests. Mention that you’re staying here if you want to raise some eyebrows.

Spectacular start for 19th Palermo-Montecarlo

Spectacular start for 19 th palermo-montecarlo.

The 19 th Palermo-Montecarlo, a 500 nautical mile race organised by Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, had a spectacular start in challenging weather conditions.

Dark clouds and clear skies chased each other across the Caribbean-like backdrop of hills around the Gulf of Mondello. At sea, conditions were also ideal with a brisk westerly topping 18 knots and waves.

Before heading out to sea, the 50 boats in competition had to pass the infamous Cap Gallo north of Palermo, an unstable zone where changeable difficult to predict winds alternate with sudden gusts and periods of calm.

There was no respite for sailors who after a demanding start were head-long into the race. Barely had they crossed the line when technical options were seen to be taken. Among the Maxis, event favourite Black Jack 100 skippered by Tristan Le Brun from Yacht Club de Monaco chose to reef the mainsail, while Balthasar and Lucky kept all sails up. It was only once they were off Capo Gallo that they found a more stable west-north-west 15-16 knot wind forcing the fleet to sail a long close-hauled tack towards the Porto Cervo gate.

Rankings shaping up

By the afternoon, the American Bryon Ehrhart’s 27m Lucky was in the lead. Skippered by New Zealander Stuart Wilson, she has former Kiwi America’s Cup sailors on board, Dean Phipps and Simon Daubney. Just behind them are Black Jack 100 and Balthasar neck and neck. Both are familiar with this offshore race as Black Jack 100 , belonging to Remon Vos, is the former Esimit Europa 2 , holder of the Palermo-Montecarlo record since 2015 of 47 hours 46 minutes 48 seconds. The second, a 21m Maltese-flagged racing yacht has participated in eight crewed round-the-world with stopovers Whitbread, which became the Volvo Ocean Race. The three Maxis very quickly upped a gear to pull away from the fleet that remained compact. Among the latter are two Monegasque boats, the Comet 45s Gorilla Gang XL of Andrea Statari and Paul Basson’s Swan46 Foreign Affair .

A decisive first night

A critical tactical choice has to be made, whether to stay in the centre of the Tyrrhenian Sea to avoid a forecasted wind hole due to high pressure on Sardinia’s east coast or head to Sardinia to pick up the coastal breezes. It will be a decisive moment in this 19 th Palermo-Montecarlo.

The weather forecast for the next few days sees the return of high pressure over the north-east Mediterranean with medium-light winds prevalent. The larger boats could remain in phase with the wind until they go up Corsica while the smaller ones may find already light airs around the mandatory gate at Porto Cervo.
