Silverton Yachts Review: 39 Motor Yacht

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

When the folks at Silverton decided to redesign their popular 392 Motor Yacht, they called on current owners and dealers for input. About half their typical buyers would opt for diesel power and cruise; the rest would go with standard gas power and spend the bulk of their time entertaining dockside.

All should be satisfied with the new Silverton 39 Motor Yacht. Unlike many comfort-driven boats, she gives up nothing in the way of performance, offers a thoughtful layout and boasts excellent detailing.

Her hull is based on a Michael Peters design. The wave-taming forward sections are parabolic: slightly convex near the chine and a bit rounder toward the keel. Sections abaft amidships are cambered, and the 13-degree transom deadrise seems an efficient choice. A hull-side step optimizes her planing surface without compromising interior volume.

I spent more than an hour running at speed and wiggling about dockside, and was impressed. She felt more like a small, high-performance convertible than a pleasure platform. Kudos to Silverton for keeping weight in check and controlling the center of gravity.

The builder offers a variety of gasoline and diesel engine options. While the roughly $45,000 premium for diesels may not appeal to some, I believe gasoline power is inappropriate for a vessel of this size and service-unless you intend to remain tethered.

Our test boat, fitted with 385 hp Caterpillar 3126s, delivered a top speed of 27.5 knots and a cruising speed of 21.3 knots at 2400 rpm. A 20-knot cruise would be important to me, so I would select these engines or the bigger Caterpillars.

The interior’s satin-finished, hardwood cherry cabinetwork, Corian counters, soft goods and fixtures are a notch above average. The L-shape sofa is not a slab-side built-in; it is a deep, custom-made affair covered in synthetic leather.

A pair of matching ottomans hidden cleverly within the cocktail table can serve as footrests or additional dinette seating. The entertainment center also is strategically positioned to serve guests on Silverton yachts.

It is a step down to the galley’s hardwood sole. There is plenty of counter space, and the polished stainless-steel sink is large enough to wash real plates. There is a cooktop, a microwave, an electric oven and dual-voltage refrigeration.

The master cabin is aft with an island berth and queen-size innerspring mattress. There is excellent stowage, and separate head and shower compartments flank a built-in cabinet and a shelf for a television.

The forward cabin has a queen-size berth, also with an innerspring mattress. A dual-access forward head with separate stall shower serves guests.

Silverton’s SideWalk exterior layout on Silverton yachts lets the skipper and crew move from the bridge to the bow with minimal effort. The bridge gates that lead to the side decks are an improvement from earlier models, which had pocket doors that tended to be wind driven. A three-position helm bench has flip-up bolsters. The control console is ergonomically satisfying with space for a reasonable complement of electronics. Additional bench seating is immediately abaft the helm.

The afterdeck, just steps away, has a built-in bench seat, a wet bar with ice maker, and space for deck chairs and a table. While a boarding area on the afterdeck is convenient, another just forward of amidships would be nice. Silverton considered a rail gate, but had safety concerns.

I would be remiss if I did not grouse about the ornamental approach to fender stowage on Silverton yachts. Fenders are not styling accessories. When mounted on the bow rail, as they are on the 39 Motor Yacht , they could run afoul with a piling if the captain is not cautious.

“Indeed, the fender baskets fall outside the gunwale dimensions, creating a potential docking hazard, said Michael Usina, Silverton’s director of marketing. “We are going to relocate the baskets to a yet-to-be determined location. They will continue to be topside for easy access.

The 39 Motor Yacht’s styling may be challenging to the traditional eye, but the boat is well proportioned and cleverly executed. She will no doubt be as popular as her predecessor, 600 of which were delivered between 1996 and 2001.

The 39 is built at Silverton’s Millville, New Jersey, production facility. She is laid up by hand with stitched and woven reinforcement, and polyester resin. The bottom is solid fiberglass, and Coremat is used in the hull-side laminate to minimize reinforcement print-through. Areas below the waterline receive a vinylester skin coat to reduce the chance of blistering. A network of fiberglass stingers and web frames is formed over wood, and bulkheads are plywood on these Silverton yachts. The hull-deck joint is bonded, mechanically fastened and fiberglassed from the inside where accessible. The gelcoat finish reflects the quality of Silverton’s tooling, and I was pleased to find frameless windows.

Access to the engine space is through the saloon sole, and equipment removal hatches are provided in case major work is required.

An 8kW generator with sound shield is forward in the engineroom. The generator is a bit out of the way, but there is additional access under the saloon steps. Bilges are finished, and mechanical installations appear well thought out and properly executed. Internal seawater strainers are hearty, there are dripless stuffing boxes, and an engine-mounting system incorporates steel foundation beams within the span between web frames.

Base price with the 385 hp Caterpillars is $330,765. Expect to pay about $416,000 with popular options and a Raymarine electronics package.

Boating Journey

Come along with Scott & Ally on their boating journey in Florida!

Silverton 392

Check out this 2000 Silverton 392 MY

This Silverton 392 motor yacht has an awesome layout and really could make for a great live aboard. Scott and I toured this yacht at Union Marine back in November and we were very surprised to see how much space it has.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The owners have put in some custom cutting boards in the cockpit above the refrigerator, which allows for great entertaining on the stern. We love how much open space there is in the cockpit for relaxing.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The Fly Bridge

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The fly bridge on this Silverton 392 offers great visibility. One thing I noticed right away (and I think it’s a great idea), is the owner put labels everywhere to help who ever is operating the boat.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

We also noticed that on the bridge, there were switches for engine fire extinguishers. How cool is that?!

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The Silverton 392 Motor Yacht, with its innovative “SideWalk” flybridge steps, offers much improvement in safety, space utilization, and mobility. Never before has going forward been so easy and so safe.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The Interior

Compared to our Bayliner 4087 , the salon offered much more space for entertaining. You could easily seat 6 or 8 people around the settee. For relaxing at night, the couch was directly across of the tv and it also has a reversible ottoman.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

There is tons of storage space under the couch cushions, plus plenty more in the built-in cabinet under the tv.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

With the galley just steps away from the salon, you can easily cook and entertain at the same time. There is a lot of storage space and I love that the stove top and oven are electric. Be sure to watch our YouTube episode, for a closeup tour (link at the end of this blog). For some reason, I hate propane ovens/stoves. I know they are the most practical for cruising, but if you are at the dock with shore power, I’ll take electric any day.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

Two staterooms

Unlike our Bayliner 4087 that had three staterooms, this Silverton 392 only has two staterooms. However, someone could sleep on the couch, but that wouldn’t offer any privacy. The forward cabin has a double size bed and has plenty of drawers for storage.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

There are two heads on this yacht and each has a VacuFlush toilet. The guest head does have a separate shower stall, which is a major plus. On our Bayliner, you had to use a shower curtain in the bathroom when you showered and things still got wet.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The main stateroom is an aft cabin, much like our Bayliner 4087. I feel this cabin is slightly smaller, but Scott disagrees with me. What do you think? I think that our bed was longer than the Silverton making the room bigger?

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The main head was a little smaller that I expected, but still offered everything you would need.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

The Engine Room

This Silverton 392 MY comes with twin Caterpillar 3116 diesel engines which have a combined 740hp and they only have 150 hours of use! Access to the engine room is in the main salon.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

This boat comes with a Kohler Generator and also has an oil change extractor! Super cool, especially if you have ever pumped out your oil manually.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

Upgrades also include a WalVac system (a must!!), Inverter and an AB dinghy with a Honda 15hp outboard motor.

silverton 39 motor yacht review

Overall Impression

Scott and I were pleasantly surprised by this yacht. It has a great layout, it’s comfortable and comes with many upgrades. While we loved our Bayliner 4087, had we looked at both boats at the same time, chances are we would have picked the Silverton.

Would it make a good liveaboard? Any boat can be a good liveaboard – check out our episode about living on a 32′ Nordic Tug. But in the end, we’re looking for a boat that’s a bit bigger with more storage. If you are looking for a great cruiser for the Northwest, be sure to check out this yacht. You will be impressed.

As always, thank you for following our journey! 2021 has a lot in store for us, including our (hopefully) upcoming bare boat charter on a power catamaran in the British Virgin Islands in April. If we can’t find the perfect liveaboard (or slip to go with it), we may decide to buy a smaller boat just to be able to get back on the water this year. Stay tuned! In the meantime, we hope you all have a fantastic New Year and we hope to see you on the water! See the full tour in the YouTube episode below.

Cheers, Scott and Ally

Hi, Everyone...We are a whisper away from purchasing a pristine 2003 39ft. Silverton motor yacht, completely loaded with everything except sattellite tv. We would like to determine what fuel consumption we can realistically expect at cruising speed with gas crusader engines (400 series). Also I'd love to hear any advice or opinions you could offer regarding the pros and cons of gas vs. diesel and whether or not the much more expensive diesels are worth the investment considering we would be weekend sailors on the Connecticut River and Sound with occasional jaunts (annual vacations) to Cape Cod or North Carolina. We only have experience with a Sea Ray 32 ft motor boat so we are rather tentative in making this investment as we are newly retired. This will be our "cottage" and our last "luxury". We are very new to boating, and so far we are loving, loving, loving it!! Any and all insider info would be sooo welcome as I'm sure we have so much to learn. We just feel that we can't rely on commission dependant sales people to honestly answer our questions. Please respond either to my e-mail or in this forum. We look forward to making new friends! LB

LB I will second the diesel recommendation for a boat this size. If you were going to just short hop in the Sound, you could make a case to go with gas but going as far as NC I would say not. As NYCAP stated, you can't just calculate the fuel savings when looking at the higher cost of diesels. The resale will be much easier and at a higher price down the road. Right now, anything that big with gas engines is not selling so unless you are getting it for a song, you are better off looking for a good deal on a boat with diesels. IMO

Thank you Friends! You were all so kind to respond to my previous questions about whether or not to consider a Silverton 39' (gas engines) motor yacht. We took your advice and kept searching until we found a diesel powered 39' Silverton motor yacht. My other half just has a few more questions regarding diesel fuel consumtion. He's a retired mechanic, so forgive me for asking such technical questions as he asked me to read and post his questions word-for-word exactly as he wrote them for me.....so here goes!: We are in the process of purchasing a 39'Silverton Motor Yacht. The boat is equipped with twin Yanmars 380HP Model 6LYASTD Diesel engines. If any of your folks can advise us on fuel consumtion we would much appreciate the info since we are planning long inter coastal cruising next summer. Please advise us re: Idle at 1500 RPM, 1800 RPM and full throttle operation gallons per hour. We would normally cruise @1800-2400 RPM. Also, what is the history for well maintained engines with regular oil and filter changes before needing overhaul? Thanks so much, you guys. We're so glad we found you! Linda

Dear LB, Your recent post has merged with your previous thread. PLEASE do not open new threads on the same subject.
It's been a few years since I've run with Yanmars, but I liked them. They're high reving, fast, miserly workhourses. You find them in a lot of watertaxis. I used to run a 43 Ocean SF with them. 5 NY-Fl trips plus the owner's other use without a hiccup. If memory serves me correct we cruised at about 29 kts. and burned in the area of 23 or 27gph. The down side (from what I hear) is that they don't lend themselves to major rebuilds well, but I have no personal experience there.

Capt Fred

Capt Fred Senior Member

Each boat and engine combination performs a little differently so to get the max performance one needs to experiment to get peak performance. Also running at displacements speeds, less than approx 8.5 kts for your boat length you can get significantly better fuel economy. For example I run a 37' Tolly and get 3 nautical miles per gallon (total) at 1200 RPM however at 1350 RPM, I only get 1 nautical mile per gallon and only going about .5 kts faster. My point being that 1500 on a diesel of this engine/boat size may not be an efficient speed.
