Das historische Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg, nahe der Stadtgrenze von Datteln, war seinerzeit eine technische Pionierleistung. Das spektakuläre Bauwerk konnte bis zu 800 t schwere Lastkähne über 14 m heben bzw. senken. Kaiser Wilhelm II. weihte die Schleuse 1899 ein, sie funktionierte bis 1962 einwandfrei. Dann entstand ein weiteres Hebewerk in gleicher Bauart, das die längeren Kohlefrachter aufnehmen konnte. Das alte Hebewerk stand von da an still. Seit 1992 vermittelt hier das mehrfach ausgezeichnete Westfälische Landesmuseum einen umfangreichen Einblick in die Geschichte des Ruhrbergbaus, der Binnenschifffahrt sowie des Kanalbaus. Im ehemaligen Motorgüterschiff “Franz-Christian” dokumentiert eine ständige Ausstellung, wie die Familien um 1930 an Bord lebten und arbeiteten.

The old Henrichenburg ship lift from 1899 and the new one from 1962 are only a few hundred meters apart. After visiting the boat lift, you can top off the day with a one-hour boat tour to the neighboring locks and the new lift on the Dortmund-Ems Canal in the direction of Münsterland. The guided tours for children are particularly recommended.

This highlight is one of the few in the lock park, which is almost suitably positioned to which of the many point-of-interests it should be, namely Lock Park Waltrop / LWL Industrial Museum "Altes Hebewerk Henrichenburg" (1899-1969). The artwork fits well, but because of the highlight growth in Schleusenpark, we also have pictures that are not suitable, because hardly anyone looks through all the inappropriate highlights. A visit to these monuments of industrial history is always worthwhile, not only for technology fans. Canal shipping has made a significant contribution to our modern life, as it has made it possible to transport goods and manufactured goods in ever-increasing demand. If you visit this highlight, you should not miss the rest of the fascinating Lock Park Waltrop, here are many other highlights on a visit and offer attractions and opportunities for rest.

Lock Park Waltrop / New Lift Henrichenburg (1962-2005) The new lift was opened in 1962 and has a trough length of 90 m with a width of 12 m and 3 m water depth. The useful size is 85 m × 11.40 m × 2.50 m (effective length × useful width × draft). These dimensions allowed the then emerging European ship passage. Technically speaking, the new elevator has the same construction principle as the old one, but the construction has been simplified. The number of floats in 52.5 m deep shafts has been reduced to two to compensate for the trough weight of 5000 t and a sub-level is eliminated because the trough and posture gates are designed as hinged gates (they turn downwards). The spindles are located in four separate towers, on a connecting elevator scaffold was omitted. The new lift soon became too small for the requirements of canal shipping. In 1989, for example, the current savings lock with a length of 190 m, a width of 12 m and a drumming depth of 4 m was built next door. The new elevator was used until December 2005, then shut down due to technical problems. A re-commissioning is questionable for cost reasons, especially since the port of Dortmund no longer has the freight volume of earlier days. If, however, - as in spring 2006 - problems or maintenance work on the modern lock, the port of Dortmund can no longer be called. In order to fight for the preservation of the lift, a sponsorship association has since been established. He would like to receive the hoist not only as a building, but also in a serviceable condition.
