1968 Luger Leeward 16?

Anyone have any experience with this model? I see this is back when they had alot of wood ribs and parts on the inside so ill have to check that out but they seemed to be real nice otherwise and I found one local with an asking price of $999 complete with everything. (trailer, covers, main and working jib, ect) I should mention that this would be my first sailboat but as a marine mechanic for regular boats i'm used to looking at fiberglass with hidden rotten guts so I'm not worried in that respect. I haven't seen it yet but it looks like it was treated ok from the pictures. I'm looking for something for one person with no real cabin thats small and easily managable in a sloop configuration. Has to be trailerable and I prefer the swing up centerboard to a dagger type keel. Cheap is ideal. They also had an 84 Melges X boat for $1500 but thats totally the opposite of the type of boat I want. Looking to go in the small toy cruiser direction to learn and eventually get into more of a full day cruiser, still trailerable but big enough for overnight.

IIRC that is a kit boat. Neighbor had one growing up. Sailed it a few times. He put a plate of steel in the CB, so this made it sluggish. But very stable/upright when it sailed. Fairly smallish in overall height, including freeboard as I recall. I sailed it in Lake Washington east of Seattle. Not a big deal most of the time. I could almost keep up with it in my 8' pram. My later 12' sloop rig left it behind! Again, this could be because of the steel CB vs what I recall was supposed to be a wood one, or a thinner version of what was in this rig. found this link http://www.lugerboats.com marty

I can't comment on whether or not this was a 'kit boat' but it looks like a fun trailer sailor to me. I sill have an old 14' Viking sloop from the mid 1950's that would definitely sail much slower then this on would among other boats I happen to own. There is something to be said for starting cheap, easy and trailerable to learn how a sloop behaves. The price does not sound bad since it includes a trailer.  

I bought one of these in the middle of last summer, and sold it by the end of last summer. I took it out 3 times, and just wasn't comfortable with something that old. There was a lot of flex in the CB trunk and there were some places (on the "deck" that covered the bow) where small tears were developing in the fiberglass where it attached to the hull. It comfortably fit 3 large guys, and handled pretty well in moderate wind, but there was a lot of spray coming over the bow/gunwale (and we were on a mid-sized lake in Minnesota). Also, the cockpit is not self bailing, so if you take on water, you better start bailing. I bought the boat plus main and jib, trolling motor, battery, and cockpit cover for $500 (I already had a good trailer). I sold the boat, accessories, and trailer for $950 at the end of summer (and bought a Com-Pac 16 + 4hp motor for $2000). If you can identify bad (weak) fiberglass, the boat, sails, and trailer look to be in good condition, and you don't mind getting a little wet, then $1,000 would be reasonable. If it's your first sailboat and you will be sailing alone (or +1) you might look for something small that could easily be swamped and recovered (Sunfish, Laser, Escape) to learn the basics on. That's how the wife and I started, we moved up to the Leeward in the hopes of staying dry, but upgraded to our current Com-Pac 16 because the Leeward just wasn't cutting it. Our first sailboat (AMF Copperhead) took about 15 mins to rig, the Leeward took about 20 mins, and the Com-Pac takes about 20 too.  

Was yours a newer all glass model or this old wood framed one? Apparently these thing are real hit and miss on quality since it is a kit assembled by who knows what skill of 1st owner. Im sure I can get it for less than $1000 if its still available, possibly alot less. The guy there said he thought that one looked well assembled. It was apparently for sale last summer or fall at the place on consignment but now they seem to have misplaced it so I didn't get to look at it. The guy said he didn't know it wasn't there and was going to call the owner to see when it was picked up. Good sign that the owner cares enough to store it at home for the winter I think since there are $50k yachts there full of ice right now and I do mean full (lots of freeze and rain and thaw lately). Too bad im not a racer, that '84 Melges X Boat had $1500 scribbled out and $950 written on it. Apparently not much is selling at all. If nothing else I spotted a similar type boat repairable mess in the corner that looked like a good hull and ok aluminum mast with no sails or trailer, maybe ill inquire. Are these difficult to set upright if they flop over? Do they turn turtle or just lay down? At a guess I would say that mid sized lake is minnetonka unless you way up north.  

The one we had was wood frame. The wood looked good on the boat, it was the flexing all over that bothered me. There were some deteriorating styrofoam under the benches in the cockpit, but if it went over, I have a feeling it would have found the bottom pretty quick. If I had kept it I was planning on pulling out the styrofoam and repacking the space with foam noodles. Even if the boat has enough flotation to keep it off the bottom and the gunwale above the waterline once you right it, the cockpit isn't self bailing, so you will be out there for a while with a hand pump or bucket. The few times we took it out I was very careful to avoid flipping it. Ours did have a roller reefing boom, which helped to decrease sail area quickly if the wind picked up. The lake was White Bear. We live in East St. Paul and White Bear is only a 20 minute drive up 61.

Review of Leeward 16

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

CentreBoard

The Leeward 16 is equipped with a centerboard keel. A centerboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.10 - 0.20 meter (0.33 - 0.63 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Leeward 16 is about 58 kg/cm, alternatively 325 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 58 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 325 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Odyssey to Repair a 16' Luger Leeward

The Luger 16' Leeward Sloop is a kit boat created by Luger Industries of Minneapolis from the early 1950's through 1986. The boats were designed by Orm and Ren Luger in collaboration with Charles Butler & Associates of New York. An engineer for 3M built this particular boat in Minnesota who sold it to me in 1991. The boat now resides upstate NY. The purpose of this blog is to document the rehabilitation of this vessel and the trials and tribulations learned along the way.

Founded by the brothers Ren and Orm Luger in Burnsville, Minnesota USA. The firm began by building small kit powerboats and soon branched into the construction of sailing craft and became, according to it’s own catalog, “The world’s Largest Manufacturer of Kit Boats”. Com-Pac 16 - a good sail?

I was attracted to a very sweet little Compac 16 on the internet that sold before I got there. I've been actively searching for a small trailer able boat and like the looks of these little boats but - how do they sail? Are they Fun? Fast? Stable? Safe? Asking all Compac 16 owner to chime in. Although I'm not a Compac 16 owner, I'll chime in anyhow. Before I got my little gem of a boat I was considering a Compac 16 as an option and I liked it. I have been around a few but never sailing on one. One thing I like to do is read about adventures in small sailboats. I read a few of people on Compac 16's, here are the links if your interested. I just took my 1978 Com-Pac 16 out for the first time yesterday. She was quick, stable and fun. I had three adults and two kids on board with light winds and we were doing 6 mph. When we caught the wind gusts she listed over, but we were never close to flipping. I will probably have to order one of those owners manuals I keep hearing about, but a couple of morons who never sailed more than a Sunfish figured it out and had a blast.  

I have just bought one, haven't taken it out yet still trying to gather a few things to get it ready to go out.

it to fix up to be as good as new and sell. I would do all of the labor needed myself and .

About 8 months ago I bought a Mac 25 off of E-bay for $1,125 and have since fixed it up to where I am about to sell if for no less that 5k and I have put maybe 1.5k into not including labor which I do for the experience more that anything else.

I am thinking about driving the hour and a half to the Luger and checking it out next week. The pictures look pretty bad but I figure if the is in good shape and the , , , and are in good condition that everthing else I could handle without haveing to large things that would cost a pretty penny.

What should I be looking for when I look at the ? How should I go about inspecting certain things on the ? What could be MAJOR problems I might run into to ruin my ?

If I buy the boat for say $700 dollars tops then would the market for this older boat ('76) be good enough in the spring to sell her.

The bad thing about the boat is that sat in it for an unknown period of time. WHat kind of major damage could that do to a boat other than ruin the wood(I am a pretty well rounded carpenter). I am speaking of the .

. This one would be a real given that some aspects of it might not have been done properly in the first place. I would continue to look for more popular production that you have a hope of doing a great restore job on.

Any buyer will know this was a kit boat and be very cautious. It's not that kit are all bad. I have Friends that built a Corbin and it was a rock solid boat but he was an and added a lot to the design as well. It's always better if what you are starting with has a know original design that could be repaired back to a known standard. A kit boat gone bad gets into real deal breakers that any buyer would and should be leery about.

The Mac 25 was a good choice, but this one I would pass on. Mac's are somewhat popular so a fixed up one is a good thing to try to sell. There has to be better projects boats than this one closer to home.

kind of did their own thing with them. Some used good materials and fasteners and fittings. Some did not. My opinion is that even in pristine condition they will not fetch a good when you get it fixed up.
You'll be replacing a lot of dry rotted bulkheads because of standing freshwater in the and doing a lot of glass tabbing. It is major .
What ever you decide to do good luck in your endeavor.
Try for another Mac, Venture, for the resale value.

several boats from junk. The fact is it really isn't worth much. Once restored some of the main things that would give it value are: Aesthetics(which you can do for cheap) Good , , good , good . All of the later things are pricey, even if you do them your self. (I don't think you can make an outboard).

I would the guy and tell him you'll take it off his hands (for free).

I seriously doubt any $$ could be made off it. But, if you simply enjoy restoring boats... Why not.

, but if you want to “finish” a kit, there is a certain attractiveness – even with the bubbled rudder, but I’d want to make sure all the major components are there and generally serviceable (center-board, rigging, etc…)… with that little boat, there isn’t a whole lot that can wrong and they were one of the popular trailer-sailor alternatives for the do-it-yourself crowd of the 60s-70s.

showroom sometime back in the area…. Pretty basic and not a lot to go wrong that can’t be fixed if you have the inclination to tackle such a project in the first place – but I never liked all the Plexiglas on what was effectively the upper hull… Might be worth a look; however, unless you just want that size boat you probably can get a bit more boat for not a whole lot more by staying tuned to eBay… I’m amazed at the fascinating boats that pop up there form time to time…

There you go! There should be some triangular tabs that hold the centerboard trunk from moving side to side. They might be rotted away or taken away on your boat.

Do you have any blueprints/diagrams?

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

orkers at a pharmaceutical factory in southern India were trying to plug a chemical leak when an explosion ripped through it, killing at least 17 people and injuring 36, the firm's chief financial officer said on Thursday.

Wednesday's blast came around noon at the privately-held Escientia Advanced Sciences in Andhra Pradesh, where nearly 400 employees make intermediate chemicals and active ingredients for export to the United States and other Western countries.

"It looks like it happened from a solvent leak," said Srinivasa Rao Korada, chief financial officer of the Escientia Group, adding that it was not clear what triggered the leak.

"Workers had noticed that leak, they were attending to it, and had almost plugged the leak when this happened," he told Reuters over telephone.

One of the worst industrial accidents in recent years in India, often called the pharmacy of the world, came a year after a fire at a pharmaceuticals factory in the same Anakapalli district of the state killed two people and injured five.

The company is collaborating with authorities to investigate the reason for the leak, Korada said, adding that smoke and fire had prevented the company from investigating immediately.

Officials said they were scanning closed-circuit television footage and questioning the injured to decide if human error was responsible.

"Preliminary investigation shows ... there was some vapour leak that led to chemical reactions, which caused the explosion," said state Industries Secretary N Yuvaraj, who identified the solvent involved as methyl tert-butyl ether.

Methyl tert-butyl ether, or MTBE, is a flammable liquid that finds use as an additive in unleaded gasolines to achieve more efficient burning, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says on its website.

An inquiry will be held into the accident, said the state's chief minister, Chandrababu Naidu, an ally in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's federal government, adding, "We also hope this will be the last such incident."

The factory started operations in 2019 with an investment of 2 billion rupees ($24 million), said Vijaya Krishnan, the district's collector, or top revenue official.
