Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.

Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.

Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.

Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.

He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.

Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.

The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Angela Bacares

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.

The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley Pic: Hiscox/ Linkedin

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.

Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.

The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."

She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.

He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.

"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.

Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

Leah Randall was part of the Bayesian crew and survived the sinking.

She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.

Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.

Vladimir Putin’s Superyacht Graceful Has A New Name: “Killer Whale”

Vladimir Putin's yacht Kosatka, formerly named Graceful, off the coast of Estonia on September 25.

The Russian president’s superyacht was spotted off the coast of Estonia, escorted by a Russian Coast Guard vessel.

Vladimir Putin’s second-largest superyacht is on the move. More than seven months after hastily departing Germany for the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the Russian president’s $119 million, 267-foot Graceful was spotted off the coast of Estonia—with a new name.

Photos seen by Forbes that were taken on September 25 by Carl Groll, a contributing photographer for TheYachtPhoto.com, reveal that Graceful has a new name: Kosatka , Russian for “killer whale.” Forbes, which was tipped off by TheYachtPhoto.com’s managing director and longtime yacht watcher Peter Seyfferth, compared photos of Graceful available on yacht industry websites with the photo of Kosatka that appear to confirm the match.

The yacht was traveling northbound in the Baltic sea to the west of the Estonian island of Saaremaa; the pictures show it being escorted by an armed Russian Coast Guard vessel, possibly en route to St. Petersburg. It’s unclear when Graceful changed its name to Kosatka or when it departed Kaliningrad, a Russian territory sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland: the yacht’s transponder has been turned off since at least August 30, according to ship tracking service MarineTraffic, when it was still in Kaliningrad. A spokesperson for the Russian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kosatka —then named Graceful —departed the German port of Hamburg on February 7, seventeen days before Russian troops invaded Ukraine. It left for Russia after a five-month refit at the shipyards of Blohm+Voss, the company that built the yacht in 2014. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Graceful —along with three other yachts linked to Putin—on June 2.

Kosatka moored at the port of Sochi, Russia in July 2015, when it was still named Graceful and before its refit in 2022.

Registered in Russia, Kosatka features an indoor swimming pool that turns into a theater and a dance floor, a helipad and suites for up to 12 guests. The ship also boasts pool towel storage cabinets that double as vodka bars and an owner's suite with a wine cave that can store up to 400 bottles; the yacht was delivered to "her closely-collaborating owner" in 2014, according to Lürssen, which owns Blohm+Voss.

According to a BBC News investigation published in March, the yacht is currently owned by Moscow-based JSC Argument, which the U.S. Treasury sanctioned along with its sole shareholder, Andrei Gasilov, on June 2. The BBC investigation found that JSC Argument had in the past agreed to a loan from one of the management companies involved in the construction of "Putin's Palace,” an opulent, 190,000-square-foot estate near the resort town of Gelendzhik on the Black Sea coast. JSC Argument did not respond to phone calls for comment from the BBC.

According to yacht valuation experts VesselsValue and reporting from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), Graceful was previously owned by British Virgin Islands-based Olneil Assets Corp. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned a company in the Cayman Islands with a similar name—O’Neill Assets Corporation—on June 2, for "having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in support of, Vladimir Putin."

Besides Kosatka , Putin has been linked to at least five more yachts: the $507 million, 459-foot Scheherazade , which is technically owned by oil & gas billionaire Eduard Khudainatov but is believed to be held on behalf of Putin ; the $22 million, 187-foot Olympia ; the $18 million, 177-foot Chayka , which means “seagull” in Russian; the $17 million, 151-foot Shellest; and the 105-foot Nega. Olympia and Kosatka , then named Graceful , were sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury on June 2 as “blocked property in which President Vladimir Putin has an interest” while Shellest and Nega were targeted as “two additional yachts linked to Putin.” Altogether, Putin’s fleet of yachts is worth at least $680 million, according to VesselsValue.

Except for Scheherazade , which was frozen by Italian authorities in the port of Marina di Carrara on May 6 and recently re-registered to Malaysia, and Olympia , which is registered in the Cayman Islands, the other yachts are all registered in Russia. All of the other yachts, except for Scheherazade , also appear to be in Russia now: Olympia was last tracked in Lake Ladoga, near St. Petersburg, on July 31, 2021; Chayka was last tracked in the Black Sea port of Sochi on March 29, 2021; Shellest was last tracked off the coast of Gelendzhik on September 13; and Nega was last tracked in Lake Ladoga on August 14.

The links between the six yachts and the leader of the Kremlin are complex. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Eduard Khudainatov— a former CEO of Russia’s state-owned oil company Rosneft and a longtime associate of Igor Sechin, Rosneft’s current boss and Putin’s right-hand man —acted as a “clean, unsanctioned straw owner” for Scheherazade , owning it through Marshall Islands-based Bielor Assets Ltd. A spokesperson for Khudainatov did not respond to a request for comment regarding Scheherazade when Forbes reached out in June.

Olympia is owned by Cayman Islands-based Ironstone Marine Investments, which was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury on June 2. According to the U.S. Treasury, Shellest and Nega are owned by the Russia-based Non-Profit Partnership Revival of Maritime Traditions and its subsidiary LLC Gelios; both entities were sanctioned on June 2. Putin’s ties to Chayka are clearer: the yacht is owned directly by the Russian government, according to VesselsValue.

An investigation by OCCRP published in June shed light on the murky relationship between Putin and his yachts. The firms that own Shellest and Nega are tied to "LLCInvest," a network of interconnected companies and nonprofits that holds a collective $4.5 billion in assets, including Putin's palatial complex on the Black Sea. The group is also linked to another yacht, the $9 million, 121-foot Aldoga , owned by a firm held by Svetlana Krivonogikh, rumored to be the mother of one of Putin's daughters.

The investigation also revealed how Putin appears to use the yachts: Shellest makes frequent trips between Gelendzhik—the site of “Putin’s Palace”—and Sochi, while Nega travels between several homes owned by LLCInvest companies, including a villa known as the “Fisherman’s Hut” on Lake Ladoga and Villa Sellgren, a mansion on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. OCCRP reached out to more than 100 LLC Invest email addresses and made phone calls to five representatives of LLC Invest companies for comment; none of the emails received replies to the questions and four of the people called did not respond, while a fifth claimed he did not know who owned the companies.

Captain of migrant boat tragedy in Senegal turns himself in as death toll rises to 26

Local authorities say the captain of a migrant boat that capsized off Senegal over the weekend has been arrested as the death toll rises to 26

DAKAR, Senegal -- The captain of a migrant boat that capsized off Senegal over the weekend was arrested, local authorities said Tuesday, as the death toll rose to 26.

Cheikh Sall, the owner and captain of the boat, turned himself in Monday, Amadou Diop, the district’s prefect, told The Associated Press.

The death toll of the capsizing rose to 26, Senegal's navy said on the social media platform X on Tuesday.

The artisanal fishing boat left the town of Mbour, nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the capital Dakar heading to Europe on Sunday afternoon before capsizing a few miles (kilometers) off the coast.

In recent years, the number of migrants leaving West Africa through Senegal has surged with many fleeing conflict, poverty and the lack of job opportunities. Most head to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of West Africa, which is used as a stepping stone to continental Europe.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 22,300 people have landed on the Canary Islands , 126% more than the same period last year, according to statistics released by Spain’s Interior Ministry.

Last month, the Senegalese army said it had arrested 453 migrants and “members of smuggling networks” as part of a 12-day operation patrolling the coastline. More than half of those arrested were Senegalese nationals, the army said.

In July, a boat carrying 300 migrants, mostly from Gambia and Senegal, capsized off Mauritania . More than a dozen died and at least 150 others went missing.

The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is one of the deadliest in the world . While there is no accurate death toll because of the lack of information on departures from West Africa, the Spanish migrant rights group Walking Borders estimates the victims are in the thousands this year alone.

Migrant vessels that get lost or run into problems often vanish in the Atlantic, with some drifting across the ocean for months until they are found in the Caribbean and Latin America carrying only human remains.

Satellite image shows Putin’s alleged super yacht out of reach of sanctions

Experts say Putin’s luxury vessel has become a symbol not only of his vast hidden wealth, but also of how challenging that money has been to find.

“He’s a KGB agent, so he’s crafty. He knows how to hide when he needs to,” said John Smith, former director of the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which administers and enforces all foreign sanctions.

Data from MarineTraffic, a global intelligence group, shows Putin’s alleged yacht, the Graceful, left Germany two weeks before the invasion of Ukraine .

Putin’s government salary is said to be about $140,000, but that doesn’t begin to explain the mansions, million-dollar watch collection and over-the-top yacht.

“It would be fair to say he’s among the richest men in the world,” Smith said.

Though he sells himself as a man of the people, his wealth is estimated to be more than $100 billion.

Putin’s critics allege he also has a cliffside palace that includes an amphitheater and a personal tunnel to the beach that doubles as a security bunker.

Palace in Gelendzhik, Russia

“Of course, he doesn’t acknowledge it as being his own,” Smith said. “It doesn’t fit with the public persona that he’s trying to create to actually acknowledge it.”

Putin relies on his oligarch friends to shield his fortune from sanctions, Smith said.

“So if he asked them to do something, they do it in terms of hiding assets, squirreling them in different parts of the globe, they will do what he needs,” he said.

Those who have tried to expose Putin’s fortune have done so at great personal risk.

Putin critic Boris Nemtsov was assassinated on a bridge in the shadow of the Kremlin in 2015. Sergei Magnitsky died in 2009 under questionable circumstances in prison after he exposed $230 million in fraud by Putin’s friends. Putin publicly condemned Nemtsov’s murder and claimed Magnitsky died of a heart attack.

His most recent No. 1 critic, Alexei Navalny , who helped expose Putin’s lavish palace, emerged as a political rival and found himself repeatedly jailed. He nearly died after being poisoned two years ago, though Putin has denied responsibility for the poisoning.

October 2020: Alexey Navalny describes the poisoning ordeal he says Vladimir Putin perpetrated

“Putin’s wealth is one of the most dangerous topics,” said Russian journalist Roman Badanin, who spent two decades investigating Putin’s financial web.

Badanin said Russian authorities sought to intimidate and silence his reporting team. Six months ago, he reached his breaking point.

“I fled the country. My apartment was searched twice. I have like three criminal charges against me back in Russia,” he said.

In his State of the Union address, President Biden said the U.S. and its allies are waging economic war on Putin and Russian oligarchs.

“We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments and your private jets,” Biden said.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department announced the formation of a new task force that would target Russian oligarchs.

“Russia is not a transparent economy,” Smith said. “The U.S. and our allies have decent information on some of [Putin’s] assets, I think a lot will remain a mystery for a long time in the future.”

The biggest financial hit for Putin would be sanctions on the energy sector, which Smith says the Russian president has used to build up his wealth for years. So far, Washington and the Europeans have been hesitant to do that.

It’s a wrap

Australia take the first of three T20Is with a comprehensive 28-run victory in Southampton.

The teams move on to Cardiff, which we will be blogging live on September 13, with the match to commence at 6:30pm local time (17:30 GMT).

We hope you will join us then, and on behalf of Kevin Hand, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.

‘It was a 200-run wicket’

Winning Australia skipper Marsh shared his thoughts as well: “Exciting watching Heady and Shorty. [We were] on par for above 200. Tried our best to stuff it up [laughs].

“[On Hazlewood and Zampa], lucky to have guys like that in our team. It was a 200-run wicket. When Heady got going, the conditions don’t matter. Xavier [Bartlett] has hurt his side.  [It’s] disappointing, but hopefully not too bad. Colder here than in Scotland, hopefully, [it’s] warmer in Cardiff.”

‘We should have chased it realistically’

Losing England captain Salt provided his thoughts as well: “Everything was good apart from the result [laughs]. Heady [Travis Head] came out swinging. We dragged it back, but with 50 off 30, we were a couple of wickets too far down.

“Heady’s done that for a couple of years. It’s about how do we shut that down? They played well, we dragged it back. We should have chased it realistically.”

‘I try to whack it every time’

Head, who was adjudged Man of the Match for his 23-ball 59, had this to say after the match:

“Nice start. [They] bowled well at the start, but we then set a platform. I was trying to acclimatise to a wicket with pace.

“Shorty got a cracking start. Good partnership to start the series well. Good relationships with the guys in the team. A bit of a luck, but I’ve worked hard to play with a freer mindset. The coach and captain want me to bat freely. I try to whack it every time”

Australia win first T20I by 28 runs

England were behind the eight ball from the outset of the second innings after losing three wickets inside of the powerplay.

Curran and Livingstone came together and put on a 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket, before both perished soon after.

From there on, Australia applied the squeeze as they came away with a comprehensive victory here at the Utilita Bowl.

WICKET! Mahmood bowled. England 151 all out

Mahmood is going for it, though, as he mows a big six over midwicket.

But it is Abbott who prevails as Mahmood steps to the offside, trying to work one away down the leg, but instead, drags the ball onto the stumps.

19 overs. England 145-9

Stonis puts in an excellent death over, giving up just four runs.

England officially need 35 to win off the final over, as Australia look to close this out. Abbott will bowl the final over.

WICKET! Rashid caught. England 142-9

Stonis is back on to bowl his third over. He gets Rashid to hit at one outside off, with Green completing a wonderful tumbling catch at mid-off.

Just one more wicket remaining now as Topley makes his way to the middle.

18 overs. England 141-8

Six come off the over as England will hope to get through the next two overs without losing any more wickets.

Abbott back into the attack

Mahmood manages to get away a brace off the second ball through the third man before the throw comes in from the deep.

17 overs. England 135-8

Rashid tonks Hazlewood down the ground off the fifth ball.

It ends a good spell from the right-armer, who finishes with figures of two for 32.

Hazlewood miserly as ever

Just the one run from his opening three balls. He has been simply magnificent again today.

16 overs. England 128-8

Mahmood survives as Australia march on towards the inevitable.

Zampa finishes his spell with fine figures of 2 for 20. Hazlewood is back on to bowl his final over.

WICKET! Overton bowled. England 128-8

Zampa is back on to bowl out his final over.

He strikes third ball as Overton backs away, to give himself room to hit through the offside, but he ends up dragging the ball onto the back pad, and then the stumps.

That is the final dangerman for England as Australia are just a couple of wickets away from wrapping up this first T20I. Mahmood walks out to face the music.

Cricket - First T20 International - England v Australia - The Ageas Bowl, Southampton, Britain - September 11, 2024 Australia's Adam Zampa takes the wicket of England's Jaimie Overton Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs

15 overs. England 126-7

Overton pulls a shortish length outside off through midwicket which just races to the boundary. He follows it up with a hoick over extra cover which just finds the rope.

England now need 54 off 30, which is certainly doable, but the game is still Australia’s to lose at the moment.

WICKET! Archer caught. England 113-7

Green is back on after bowling out Bartlett’s remaining two deliveries of his spell before retiring hurt.

He gets Archer to go after a shorter one, sending it high over midwicket. Short does well to get under and hold onto the chance. It is just a matter of time now for Australia as Rashid joins Overton in the middle.

14 overs. England 113-6

Archer whacks one towards midwicket, and thanks to some miscommunication by the outfielders, is able to run three.

England require 67 off 36, but will find it hard going with the current personnel at the crease.

WICKET! Livingstone bowled. England 108-6

That may very well be the final deadly blow as the dangerous Livingstone departs from the scene after scoring 37!

Marsh has been excellent with his bowling changes, and despite some nervy moments, the bowlers have largely repaid his faith. Archer is the new batter.

13 overs. England 108-5

The hosts require 72 off 42, but have only five wickets in hand.

This is the last recognised batting pair, so if Australia can pluck another quickly, they will fancy their chances immensely. With that being said, Hazlewood is invited back on to bowl.

WICKET! Curran holes out. England 106-5

Abbott’s next legal ball is dealt with a hard slap through extra cover, but finds the boundary rider as the batters run just a single.

But he has the final laugh as a slower bouncer catches Curran off guard, who was looking to hook him high over fine leg, but instead finds short fine leg.

That is a massive blow for England as these two were looking to put on a fine recovery after being in a significant quandary. Overton is the new batter.

Abbott under pressure

England bring up three figures soon after, thanks to Livingstone’s slice over backward point. Despite the boundary rider doing well to launch forward and get his hands on it, the chance is just too tough.

It is also a free hit to boot after the bowler had overstepped. But before they can address that, the bowler ends up bowling two wides back-to-back.

Curran welcomes Abbott to crease

The quick bowls a shortish length on middle and leg. Curran is able to pull away authoritatively through cow corner to pick up a boundary.

12 overs. England 93-4

Eight runs come off the over with England requiring 87 off 48 balls.

Curran gets into the act

Zampa into his third over. The tweaker delivers a full, wide delivery outside off which Curran climbs into, sending it humming to the extra cover boundary.

11 overs. England 85-4

Livingstone cracks a drive through extra cover to once again find the boundary.

Just what the doctor ordered if you are an England fan, as they pickup 17 off the over.
