Fifty (or more) shades of blue… Porsche Colors 101

Fifty (or more) shades of blue… Porsche Colors 101

The color of a sports car is always an expression of the owner’s personality. Colors always arouse emotions and therefore, choosing the right color for presenting a vehicle is key to sales success afterwards. Not many sports car makers are that much into the play of colors as Porsche. In recent years, the Porsche brand and their customers showed more courage for color, which led to a real renaissance of blue cars.

Have you every wondered, how many different blue tones Porsche offered? Did you know, that between two 911s in the same color there could be a gap of more than 60 years? Today, we want to take you an a journey through Porsche’s long history, presenting you some of the most striking blue tones, ranging from Azure Blue and Petrol Blue up to Miami Blue.

Azure Blue – Porsche 356 pre A (1951-1953)

Porsche 356 models from 1948 until 1955 are called pre A models. In that time, pastel shades were pretty much the trend. Tasteful combinations of blue on the outside an cream in the interior were chosen regularly. Often even with fitting white wall tires and bright roofs. Porsche’s Azure Blue, color code 522, fitted perfectly in that era. Especially when matched with bright interiors that color scheme made you feel positive and still reminds us of beach postcards of the time. That color was only used again 2016, more than 60 years later on a Porsche 911.

Aga blue – porsche 911 f-model (1966-1968).

Only the Porsche 911 short wheelbase (SWB) models were offered in Aga Blue, which is a medium blue, combined with touches of grey and green. In the late 60’s, darker colors like bottle-green became more popular again. It harmonizes particularly well with the addition of chrome trim, yellow indicators and especially red interior materials. Aga Blue has the color code 6608 and perfectly represents the spirit of the time.

Petrol blue – porsche 911 g-model & 928 (1978-1980), 924 (1979-1980).

The 1970’s were a pretty colorful decade, but white, grey and black took over more and more market shares. Ironically, Petrol Blue came up in the exact same time as the second oil crisis in 1979. Petrol Blue is a relatively dark metallic blue with a small glimmer of green. Whoever owns a Porsche with the color code 376 or LM5V today, can call him- or herself a member of an exclusive club. And as we live in a time, were alternative powertrains get more and more popular, isn’t it kind of cool to drive in a sports car, whose color is called after the fuel it needs?

Marine blue – porsche 911 g-model & 928 (1987-1988), 964 carrera (1990).

As you may have noticed, were getting into the more subtle areas of Porsche’s color spectrum. Marine blue was fairly popular back in the day, but black, silver and especially guards red dominated the roads in the late 80’s. Porsches with the color code (L)35V, at first glance, nearly seem to be grey. But depending on the ambient light and viewing angle, the color changes to a wonderful medium to light blue tone. In a darker environment, it even looks purple. In company with bright interior colors, a Marine Blue Porsche 911 is one hell of a tasteful piece of design.

Maritime blue – i.a. porsche 964 carrera (1991-1993) & 968 (1992-1994).

In the early 90’s, flashy colors had a bit of a comeback. Yellow and purple were modern then and perfectly fitted into the time of synthesized pop music and all time classic movies like Basic Instinct or Hot Shots. In the times of shoulder pads, Porsche offered showy colors like the pretty bright Martime Blue. The color was available for nearly all models of the Porsche lineup. Martime Blue aged exceptionally well, so in 2011 and 2016 Porsche gave that color a comeback on the 911, Boxster and Cayman. Color codes for this non-metallic blue are LM5A, L38B, F2 and 38B.

Lapis blue – porsche 911 (2001-2008), boxster (2001 & 2003-2007), cayman (2006-2007), cayenne (2003-2006).

At the beginning of the new millennium, Porsche’s customers lusted after subtle colors. Black, grey and silver are dominating the street scene since then. Porsche therefore offered the dark and very metallic Lapis Blue. Depending on the ambient lighting and the outline, Lapis Blue could shimmer very bright in some areas. On the other hand, it still remains discreet and unobtrusive looks. During the mid-2000’s, every single Porsche model could be ordered with the color code M5W. Boxster and 996 models do wear Lapis Blue quite regularly.

So, how many shades of blue have been offered by porsche in total: 102.

By now, you should have got the impression, that a maximum degree of individuality for the customers has always been highly important for Porsche. In recent years, more and more customers bought cars in very flashy colors. That’s great news, at least from our perspective. No matter if Petrol Blue, Aga Blue, Azure Blue or one of the 99 other blue options. In 2017, Porsche released a particularly striking color with Miami Blue, which seems to be a perfect definition of a true eyecatcher. We love those dashes of color in our world of silver or black leased cars!

Footage Shows Porsche Carjacking In Front Of Busy School

Here's what elon musk thinks about shaq's new custom tesla cybertruck, here’s why pontiac never offered a big block v8.

Porsche is one of the most beloved enthusiast car brands. This year, they're celebrating 75 years of creating some of the best performance cars on the road, and even though they faced a rough patch about 30 years ago, they rose to the challenge and continue to make amazing cars, regardless of their size, shape, or what powers them.

RELATED: 10 Factory Porsches We'd Take Instead Of A Singer

For a while now, Porsche has offered a special paint color-to-order program called Paint to Sample, which allows their customers to choose a unique exterior color, either from Porsche's catalog, or a completely custom one of their choosing. While this comes at a hefty price premium, Paint to Sample offers some awesome colors that might just be worth paying for.

10 Signal Yellow (114)

Enthusiasts seem to have a love-hate relationship with yellow on cars. On some cars, it looks fantastic, and on others, you just wish it was any other color. However, Porsche has done a fantastic job with Signal Yellow, one of a handful of yellows in the Paint to Sample catalog that carries the code 114.

Signal Yellow is very bright, and it has a slight orange tint to it, ensuring that your Porsche stands out in a sea of gray and black cars all over the world. We chose the spectacular 911 Carrera GTS in this case, and the black wheels that are specific to the GTS complement Signal Yellow perfectly.

9 Nardo Grey (Y7C)

Just about everyone yawns at the color gray on any automotive application. While gray may not be anything special, if there's one type of gray color that enthusiasts have gone crazy over in the past few years, it's definitely Nardo Grey. This color was popularized by its appearance on various Audi models, and what makes it unique is that it's a non-metallic color.

This has also led to a lot of people calling it primer gray, due to its resemblance to primer you would apply before applying an actual paint color. In any case, PTS Nardo Grey, or paint code Y7C, looks fantastic. We chose the EV benchmark Taycan Cross Turismo for this application, as it not only complements the additional body cladding, but it gives it an off-the-grid look.

8 Arrow Blue (305)

Paint to Sample offers any and all varieties of the color blue, and undeniably one of the highlights is Arrow Blue. This paint color offers the code 305, and it's definitely an eye-catching shade. Blue in general tends to be a more popular color option for cars, but most Porsche buyers end up opting for Miami Blue instead.

While Miami Blue is unashamedly bright, Arrow Blue is on the darker side of the spectrum, while also staying noticeable at the same time. For this application, HotCars chose the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, as Arrow Blue suits it exceptionally well, particularly when paired with a black interior and the optional RS Spyder alloy wheels. The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet also got an America special edition back in 2022.

7 Club Blue / Club Blau (TBC)

If you prefer your blues to be a little darker and less flashy, Club Blue or Club Blau is here. This color is essentially Arrow Blue's less flashy cousin. While it's still a relatively bright shade of blue, it's a little darker, and it blends in with the environment a fair bit more. Due to it being darker, it's better suited to silver alloy wheels, like on the Carrera Classic.

RELATED: Here Are The 15 Best Porsche 911 Models Ever

This color looks great on the 911 Targa, a classic and iconic member of the 911 lineup, as it's the perfect combination of a coupe and a convertible. Looking at it that way, this color is the perfect combination of noticeable and subtle. It also looks great paired up with a black interior.

6 Dark Sea Blue (W67)

If you're a fan of blue but prefer something significantly darker and as low-profile as possible, then Dark Sea Blue could be right up your alley. This inky blue shade carries the code W67, and it's one of the darkest colors in the Paint to Sample catalog. Despite it working great with one of the larger, more comfort-focused Porsche models, we've applied it to the excellent 911 GT3.

The GT3 is the kind of car that you would almost always paint in a very bright, flashy color, so this Dark Sea Blue is a fantastic contrast, and a great way to break the tradition of flagship 911 models with super bright colors. It also looks great with the platinum gray Y-spoke alloy wheels.

5 Chartreuse / Linden Green (226)

When it comes to green, automakers go to one of two extremes: very flashy and bright, or dark and low-profile. Chartreuse, otherwise known as Linden Green, is undeniably in the former category in the Paint to Sample catalog. This unapologetically bright shade of green also mixes in some shades of yellow, like a safety vest.

This exterior color looks fantastic on Porsche's ultimate luxury sports car, the 911 Turbo, as it complements the car's various carbon fiber accents. It also pairs really well with the 911 Turbo alloy wheel design. If you opt for this PTS shade, you will definitely turn some heads.

4 Olymp Blue 914 / Olympic Blue (Z16)

Back to the shades of blue for a moment. Olympic Blue, otherwise known as Olymp Blue 914, is a fantastic bright shade of blue that is guaranteed to be seen, no matter where you go. It's very similar to the classic Porsche Miami Blue, but it leans slightly towards the green side of the color spectrum.

This color looks outstanding on the bonkers track day monster with an engine to die for, the 911 GT3 RS. You may argue that the last thing the GT3 RS needs is flashier colors, but the color pairs up well with the car's various matte black and carbon fiber accents and aerodynamic pieces. It also looks particularly awesome with the optional gold wheels, although they do require the Weissach package.

3 Dark Olive Metallic (M6X)

Dark green is currently doing the rounds in the automotive industry, especially when paired up with a tan or light-brown interior, for the classic and venerable green over tan combination. Luckily, Porsche offers a variety of dark green colors in the Paint to Sample catalog, and Dark Olive Metallic definitely stands out.

RELATED: 10 Reasons Why The Porsche Panamera Turbo S Is A Perfect Daily Driver For Gearheads

This color also goes by the code M6X, and it's very similar to the iconic British Racing Green. A very dark shade of green with a slight yellow tinge, Dark Olive Metallic looks great on the Panamera GTS, as it fits with the Panamera's luxury sleeper ethos. Of course, you'd have to pair it up with a tan interior.

2 Aubergine (025)

Similarly to yellow, people tend to have a love-hate relationship with pink and purple cars. They either love them, or they hate them. Porsche offers several pinks and purples in their catalog, and undoubtedly the stand-out among them is Aubergine. Obviously named for its resemblance to the garden vegetable, Aubergine looks awesome on just about any Porsche.

In this case, HotCars has chosen the 911 GT3 with the Touring Package, which is packed with great features, as it pairs up really well with the car's brighter wheels, and it just looks cool as a whole package. If you don't want to be seen in a hot pink car, Aubergine strikes a perfect balance between turning heads and being subtle.

1 Viola Metallic (W85)

Our top pick for the Porsche Paint to Sample catalog has to be Viola Metallic. This stunning shade of purple carries the color code W85, and it just looks spectacular. Similar to the pinks, Porsche offers a pretty big variety of purples, and Viola is one of the darkest shades. Once again, we've paired up this color with the 911 Turbo.

This type of purple almost looks black when there's little to no light, but in sunlight or in certain street lighting situations, it stands out with a noticeable purple tinge that will have people pulling out camera phones left, right, and center. If you want your Porsche to be purple, don't think twice about this one; otherwise, there are many amazing Paint to Sample colors to consider .

Yachting blue interior anyone?

  • Add to quote

I've fixed my order with Rhodium Silver / Blue Top / Blue interior and there aren't many pictures or comments about this particular color. I thought many would have chosen it. So anyone happy with their yachting blue interior? Does it get dirty easily? Without full leather, does it look worse than black?

This thread and the link within it might be of interest: http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-...6866-yachting-blue-full-leather-pictures.html I'd love to see pics if you go with that combo.

Let me know what angles/etc you want and I'll take some more for you. I have the leather package but not full leather.

Thanks a lot! I've searched the internet for all sorts of blue porsche interiors... but I guess I want to see more and more while waiting for mine to arrive! How about some odd angles and close ups that are not usually photographed? Show us your imagination!! and... blue do look good in real life.. riiiiight~?

Did you choose the wrong vehicle model?

Why the two-step paint system.

Your 2012 Porsche (All Models) is painted at the factory with a high quality basecoat/clearcoat system. This two-step paint system consists of step one, the basecoat, which is your car’s actual color, and step two, the clearcoat, the specially formulated clear paint that protects the base color and provides the luster and deep shine your vehicle came with when new. AutomotiveTouchup products faithfully reproduce your vehicle manufacturer’s basecoat/clearcoat system.

Here's what our customers are saying about our Touch Up Paint:

John m, owner of a 2012 porsche 911 from florida.

I have purchased many different touchup paint colors for repairs to all my Porsches and I have always been very pleased with your products. AutomotiveTouchup is my go to source for paint. Thank you for a great product and excellent service.

Phillip O, owner of a 2012 Porsche Cayman from Jackson, MS

Perfect match on paints. I've bought paint for 4 different cars and they always match perfectly.

Brian S, owner of a 2012 Porsche Cayman from Pittsburgh, PA

I scraped and badly scratched the plastic "splitter lip" on my Porsche Cayman R front spoiler at a race track when the car rolled forward in neutral and hit a Pit wall while I was adjusting a dash cam and wasn't paying attention. A new unpainted splitter piece was $270 from a dealer. I repaired the scrape with sandpaper so that it was mostly unnoticeable. Your Guards Red paint and Clear Coat was a perfect match to the factory color. The spray can gave out a very light mist which was easy to control and apply evenly. The paint hid the repaired scrape much better than I anticipated. The do-it-myself fix was a fraction of the cost of a professional repair and no one but me will ever notice the difference. I will recommend your products to my friends who also make stupid mistakes that damage their car's finish!
