At the beginning of August, British superyacht specialist, Pendennis welcomed an exceptional classic to its facility in Falmouth, Cornwall for a major restoration project. Built in 1931 by British shipyard, Camper & Nicholsons, 59m Marala will spend the next 18 months undergoing a rigorous renovation programme to restore her to her former glory.

Having been custom built to an incredibly high standard, with naval architecture and exterior design from Charles E. Nicholson, Marala holds a unique and interesting history.

Due to a shortage of warships at the beginning of World War II, the Royal Navy needed suitable vessels to join the fleet. Alongside increasing British boat production, yachts such as Marala were converted in to armed vessels, to reinforce the British fleet. In this case, Marala , which at the time belonged to English aircraft manufacturer, Richard Fairey, was converted and commissioned to the British Royal Navy, under the name HMS Evadne.

The yacht’s service history began as a moderately-armed vessel to support merchant cruisers, and then continued to focus on anti-submarine patrols, for which she was converted in early 1940.

The yacht’s service history began as a moderately-armed vessel to support merchant cruisers, and then continued to focus on anti-submarine patrols, for which she was converted in early 1940. After the vessel was decommissioned from service in the mid 40s, the vessel was then reinstated as a private yacht.

Given the age of the yacht, there have been relatively few owners of Marala, which was put on for sale in 2016 for the first time in over 50 years. The new owner, who is said to have recognised the project as a rare opportunity, is keen to retain her classic design and heritage with the restoration project, but also integrate modern systems and technologies on board.

“ Marala’ s new owner recognised the rare opportunity to own a Camper & Nicholsons classic motoryacht but understood that her essential engineering requirements would impact her interior,” says Marala ’s captain. “With a determination to remain sympathetic to her heritage and original design, the decision was made to bring the yacht to Pendennis to complete a restoration and preserve her spirit for many years to come.”

Details of the programme of works include upgrades to the yacht’s steelwork, domestic and electrical systems, harnessing modern engineering methods, alongside a new guest area, which has been commissioned to London-based design house, Muza Lab. The shipyard has reported that a new look will be brought to the interior, which will respect and celebrate the 1930s spirit of the vessel.

A number of superstructure modifications will also be made to the vessel, which is intended to restore her profile to a design which is close to the original lines. Marala, will also be completely repainted and her teak decks will also be replaced.

A number of superstructure modifications will also be made to the vessel, which is intended to restore her profile to a design which is close to the original lines.

"Pendennis is renowned the world over as the premier destination to complete a complex restoration project like Marala ,” says joint managing director, Mike Carr. “Years of experience working on award-winning projects such as Fair Lady, Shamrock V, Malahne and most recently Haida 1929 has given our 430-strong workforce not only a broad understanding of the complexities of completing a project such as Marala, but also a deep respect for preserving the heritage of these yachts for generations to come. We pride ourselves on being able to sympathetically balance traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, breathing new life into these historic yachts".

A Blast from the Past

my marala yacht

Constructed by Camper and Nicholsons in 1931, Marala has endured a rich and fascinating history that has seen her withstand the trials of World War II and German U-boats. Her character, layout, and original engines have been well-preserved thanks to her few owners, and although her interior and superstructure have undergone modifications, she remains a Hollywood icon of elegance. Hosting distinguished guests such as Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra, and international royalty throughout her lifetime, Marala continues to be cherished for her enduring charm and remarkable past.

Marala's interiors have been expertly restored by Muza Lab to showcase her original 1930s Art Deco design. The main salon is adorned with a skylight and working fireplace, while the dining area features wood paneling and period chandeliers, seating up to 12 guests. The result is an exquisite blend of luxury and timeless elegance.

my marala yacht

Marala's exterior spaces are just as impressive as her interior. The copper spa Jacuzzi pool and informal banquet seating create a relaxed yet opulent atmosphere. Adding to the unique charm of this vessel is a teak 'treasure chest' that conceals an outdoor cocktail bar, providing the perfect spot for enjoying cocktails while taking in the stunning views.

Transformed by Pendennis Shipyard, Marala takes opulence and exquisite detail to a whole new level. Over two years, the shipyard restored her original riveted construction by Charles E. Nicholson, refurbished her powertrains, replaced her timber, and installed a modern electrical system. The interior was also restored to its original Art-Deco glory by Muza Lab, using archives and original plans to create an authentic vision. The result is a breathtaking blend of nostalgia and modern luxury that pays homage to Marala's heritage.

my marala yacht

59m classic motor yacht Marala, one of relatively few surviving yachts from her era, has a fascinating story of 1930’s elegance, German U-boats, and Hollywood glamour. Built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1931, she has had unusually few owners for her age, meaning her character, basic layout and original engines have all been preserved. However, many modifications have been made to her superstructure and interior throughout her life, most notably when she was converted for naval service during World War II. Beloved by several notable Owners, guardian of wartime naval crew and host to distinguished guests such as Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra, and international royalty, she is now a historical icon infused with character from each era of her life.

When she came onto the market in 2016, it was for the first time in over 50 years, and her new Owner sought to have her meticulously restored. Her Captain remarked “Marala’s new Owner recognised the rare opportunity to own a Camper & Nicholsons classic motor yacht but understood that her essential structural requirements would impact her interior, meaning it would be wise to address engineering updates at the same time. With a determination to remain sympathetic to her heritage and original design, the decision was made to bring the yacht to Pendennis to complete a restoration and preserve her spirit for many years to come.”

Marala represents one of many historic restoration projects that have taken place at Pendennis. She arrived at Pendennis in mid-August 2019 on a yacht transport ship direct from Malta, having started her project there. By this stage her Captain and his team had already stripped out much of the yacht’s interior and started some engineering works.

On arrival at Pendennis the yacht was taken straight into the inner dry dock, her home for the next two and a half years, for de-storing, investigation work on her steel hull and superstructure and to start her Lloyd’s special survey. In conjunction with this activity, it was also vital for the Pendennis team to finalise the technical specification for the new systems and calculate the net space on board to sign off the yacht’s new interior with Muza Lab.

The investigation work into her steel hull and superstructure identified a significant number of areas that needed urgent attention. A comprehensive programme of fabrication, blasting and repainting commenced that resulted in the renewal of over 100 tonnes of steel, predominantly on her hull. The decision was taken to leave the hull un-faired, providing an authentic look synonymous with her heritage.

Other key external modifications included the removal of the exterior hard topped shelter and tender storage on the Owner’s aft deck to make way for an external entertainments area complete with a cinema space and Jacuzzi. In addition, it was decided that the yacht’s lines should be restored to their 1930s roots, which required the removal of the bulwarks and side deck structures that had been added in the 1950s and 60s.

A comprehensive programme of replacing all services on board was carried out, including the HVAC, air conditioning, piping and ducting, cabling power and distribution, lighting and hardware. Her auxiliary generators were fully rebuilt, whilst her emergency generator was replaced with an emergency battery system to remove the need for an emergency generator to be located on the upper decks. Marala also underwent a full rebuild of the hydraulic and original manual steering systems on board, which included a full restoration of the manual emergency steering (in place since build) on the aft main deck.

London based design house Muza Lab were commissioned to bring a new look to the décor that both respects and celebrates the 1930s spirit of the vessel. Beginning with the original design spec and blueprints from the National Maritime Museum archives, they extensively researched Marala’s history, developing an understanding of her heritage and character which they would reference throughout the design process. The designs for the guest cabins are a journey through different periods of Marala’s life, with 1930’s style waxed linen panels, nods to her time in military service, and savoy blue accents symbolising the Palace of Savoy in homage to a former Owner. The Owner’s area rich with art deco glamour, inspired by the 1930’s ocean liner, the SS Normandie.

Muza Lab explained “In her 89 years of illustrious history, several performances have graced the stage that is this grand dame, each with its curious cast of characters. It is this rich heritage, specifically the times full of optimism, of heady glamour, that we have sought to honour in our new design direction for Marala. Far from an interior restoration project, this has been about reinvigorating her 1930s spirit, preserving her aura for years to come.” And it is important to note that this restoration project was not to conceal but to enhance Marala’s features; as Muza Lab suggested “In Marala, we already had a diamond – it has been a case of repolishing it to reveal its brilliance.”

'For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea' - Sicily yacht survivor

The luxury yacht the Bayesian

There were 22 people on board the Bayesian at the time of the incident

  • Published 19 August 2024

A British mother on board a yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily has described holding her baby girl above the surface of the sea to save her from drowning.

The mother, named as Charlotte Golunski, her partner and one-year-old daughter are reported to be among 15 people to have been rescued from the luxury yacht Bayesian early on Monday.

Six people - including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch - are missing with one man found dead outside the wreckage.

Charlotte told Italian newspaper La Repubblica her family survived only because they were on deck when the yacht sank after encountering a heavy storm.

She said they were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

The 56m (183ft) vessel, which was carrying 10 crew and 12 passengers, sank half a mile off the coast of Palermo after the storm caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air, to appear over the sea.

Charlotte Golunski said she held her baby out of the waves with all her might as the storm raged

“For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” the paper quoted her as saying.

Charlotte said she held her baby "afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning".

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others," she added.

A lifeboat inflated and she said 11 people were able to climb in. All three of the family were unharmed and taken to hospital for check-ups.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said his crew took on board some survivors on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured.

Describing the moment, the storm hit, he told Italian news outlet Rai the superyacht tipped to its side and sank within "a few minutes"

"It all happened in really little time," he said.

A local fisherman, Giuseppe, told Reuters he was on board a motorboat when he saw "mats and T-shirts floating in the sea".

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, says he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 4:15am we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht "sinking with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello, the fishing village near Palermo where the disaster unfolded, to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it unsinkable.

The bodies of Lynch and four others were recovered by rescue crews. One woman remains missing.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about half a mile offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Video below: Maritime Historian Sal Mercogliano explains causes for sunken yacht

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her.

Lynch had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

my marala yacht

One man has died and six people are missing after a luxury yacht sank in freak weather conditions off the coast of Sicily.

The 56m British-flagged Bayesian was carrying 22 people - 12 passengers and 10 crew - when a heavy storm that created waterspouts struck early on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued and a search operation for those unaccounted for - who include the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - is continuing.

Here is what we know about the tragedy so far and how it unfolded.

What happened to the yacht?

Map of Porticello and Palermo in Sicily

The Bayesian was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning, witnesses say.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.

The storm was so fierce that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

The vessel disappeared beneath the water at about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST).

A doctor treating survivors said the ship "capsized within a few minutes".

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m (236ft) aluminium mast to break in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

However, divers on the search and rescue team have said the ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, raising questions as to whether the mast was broken.

The ship's unusually tall mast may have contributed to its sinking, according to Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the mast acted almost like a sail in the strong wind "especially with it being so high".

The extreme winds could have caught the mast and pushed the yacht over, he said.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said after the storm had passed, the crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

His crew took on board some survivors, including three who were seriously injured.

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, said he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 04:15 we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht sinking "with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Golunski, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica how she held up her one-year-old daughter Sofia to stop her from drowning.

She said the two of them and her partner James survived only because they were up on deck when the yacht sank.

They were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

Charlotte said: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves."

She added: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

What is the latest with the search?

Six passengers remain missing and the Palermo coastguard says the search and rescue operation is continuing "incessantly".

The search began on Monday and specialist divers have been working at the site since early on Tuesday morning.

One diver told Italian media the yacht was "practically intact" on its side at the ocean's basin, about 50m below the surface.

The ship's hull is obstructed with furniture and various objects, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

Divers are looking for ways to access the yacht's cabins, but they have just 10 minutes to search on each dive before they need to return to the surface, the Italian news agency Ansa has reported.

A 1cm thick glass window is also being considered as an entry point.

Francesco Venuto, a spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, told the BBC on Monday rescue teams fear the bodies of those missing "must be" in the boat.

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense. In these conditions, we should have found something by now," he added.

A specialist caving search and rescue diving team arrived from Rome on Monday, hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by Tuesday morning at the latest, the director general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said.

On Monday, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch sent a team of four investigators to carry out a preliminary assessment of the Bayesian's sinking, the BBC understands.

Who was on board?

PA Mike Lynch

There were 22 people on board when the storm hit, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

The body of one man has been recovered. He has not been formally identified, but the Palermo coastguard said he was the ship's cook. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Among the six people still missing is 59-year-old tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates".

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Afterwards, he told the BBC in an interview he had been able to prove his innocence only because he had the wealth to pay the enormous legal fees required.

The other missing people include Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is among the 15 people to have been rescued, with eight of those receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

Charlotte Golunski, her husband and daughter Sofia were also rescued and were unharmed, but taken to hospital for check-ups.

She said they had been on the yacht with a group of colleagues.

The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

A doctor based in Palermo said the "very tired" survivors were "constantly asking about the missing people".

Dr Domenico Cipolla told Reuters that one woman he treated described the trip as a "corporate holiday", with some of those on board "very young".

"There were a lot of work colleagues, friends, a few husbands, wives, or a couple of friends who had joined in," he adds.

Facebook Charlotte Golunski

What is a waterspout and why do they form?

A waterspout is similar to a tornado and can form over oceans, seas or large lakes.

The western half of the Mediterranean has experienced severe storms since the middle of last week.

Through Sunday night and into Monday morning, a zone of bad weather passed by the north coast of Sicily.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A waterspout is a tornado that has occurred over water rather than land.

"They can form during intense storms, on the base of cumulonimbus/thunder clouds.

"Turbulence, and the wind blowing in slightly different directions around the cloud, can cause rotation under the base of the cloud and the spout to form.

"Like tornadoes, they bring powerful winds, but instead of picking up dust and debris they cause a water mist around the column of rotating air."

What is the Bayesian, and who owns it?

EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The Bayesian yacht

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is understood to derive from the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Ms Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

A spokesperson for Camper and Nicholsons International, the firm that manages the 2008-built boat, told BBC Verify: "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

ROME (Reuters) - Divers scouring the wreck of the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily have found the bodies of two of the six passengers who were missing, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.

The boat, owned by the wife of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was carrying 22 passengers and crew and was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it capsized during a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday.

Rescue teams did not immediately give the names or the sex of the drowned people, who are the second and third victims of the shipwreck to be found.

The body of the yacht's cook, Recaldo Thomas, was located shortly after the vessel sank.
