Sailing is the focus at Bayview Yacht Club

detroit bayview yacht club

The reason sailors join Bayview Yacht Club differs for each member.

For some its the camaraderie, for others it may be the restaurant or its location on the banks of the Detroit River. Most agree, though, that it's the club's rigorous focus on sailing that sets Bayview apart from other clubs.

For Lynn Kotwicki, it was the club's legacy of racing champions.

"I knew the history, I knew the reputation. I knew the America's Cup sailors and sailors across a number of classes that were members," says Kotwicki of Royal Oak, who became a member in the early 2000s. A competitive sailor, she grew up around powerboats, but focused on sailing around age 10.

Kotwicki developed the yearly Women on Water regatta at Bayview in an effort to draw more women to the sport. She says Bayview is known globally because members like herself travel the world's waterways leaving behind the club's flag, known as a burgee.

"When I compete, whether it's in Portugal, Brazil or Sweden, or wherever, I always take the burgee and leave it there at that club. It's one of those things that ties you to home, but then again it makes notoriety for the club around the world, as well."

This year, Bayview celebrates 100 years in Detroit. The six-acre club at 100 Clairpointe, off East Jefferson, offers members access to boat wells, banquet facilities, a bar and restaurant and plenty of social activities. For all the stereotypes that may be associated with yacht clubs — exclusivity, old money, polo shirts — Commodore Hanson Bratton says Bayview aims to be inclusive and welcomes anyone interested in the sport of sailing.

"Bayview, as far as private clubs go, has a pretty narrow focus in terms of sailing," says Bratton, who will serve as commodore for one year, per tradition. "We don't have a lot of powerboats here ... we don't have a swimming pool, we don't have racquet courts and all that, so a lot of it is truly focused on sailing."

Bayview hosts regattas regularly. Besides a Thursday night series, the annual Summer Match Racing Invitational will take place this weekend, and, later this summer, the yacht club will host the Detroit Cup Aug. 27-30. The international sailing competition — which partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit — is spectator-friendly and has onsite commentary to add to the excitement of competition.

Bayview is best known for creating the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race, which began in 1925. Frank Kern, a member since 1996, has collected extensive history on the race. Kern says when Bayview opened, there were only six members. Today there are around 1,000.

"Bayview started 100 years ago in 1915 and it was literally a fishing shack on motor boat row, which today is the boat basin owned by Gregory Marina (two miles west of Bayview)," Kern says.

One of the most popular aspects of Bayview in terms of boating is the adult and youth sailing programs, where people of almost any age can learn the basics of the sport. The Junior Sailing Program is open to youths ages 8-18 and offers a two-week "Learn to Sail" program ($450) or a summer-long program ($1,150).

Sailors are not required to be members of BYC, nor do they need to own a boat; they just need some close-toed shoes, a life vest and sun block.

Jessica Dodge of Grosse Pointe Park started her fourth summer in the sailing class last week.

"When I came in, I didn't even like sailing, but I love it so much now," says Dodge, who will be a freshman at Grosse Pointe South High School after her summer on the water. "The community is so nice and everyone is really helpful. I've learned so much about sailing. They teach you everything."

"And it's not just sailing; we play games and you make a lot of friends."

The final youth sailing class begins Monday, adult classes are under way, and a second wave of the program starts in mid-July.

Bridget Nutter joined Bayview as a junior member of the sailing program in 1997. She said Bayview offers a great way to make lifelong connections.

"I grew up in the junior sailing program and I was lucky enough to meet a lot of people who are still some of my closest friends today," says Nutter of Grosse Pointe Park.

"We've always been a club that prioritizes racing over anything else, although the social aspect is a close second. You can walk into the bar almost any time and see someone dressed up for work talking to another member covered in paint, and they're both equally at home because the love of the sport is what brought them in the door."

In addition to beginning sailors, Bayview also is home to champions, as demonstrated by the many shelves stocked with trophies throughout the club. Bayview even supports Olympic sailors. Two Olympic sailing teams — Bora Gulari and Solvig Sayre, and Alex Hume and Matt Graham — are working with the club to compete in the 2016 summer games.

Bratton stresses that while it can be costly to maintain and house a big boat, sailing can be for people in all economic situations.

"People think that it's a rich man's sport. The fact of the matter is that there are people that have money here and lot of what happens requires that financial support — owning a big boat — but people that don't have a lot of money also are very much welcome here and are needed to support sailing," Bratton says.

"All these boats need people to crew, and everybody here is willing to take on somebody and teach them what to do, and not even in the adult sailing program, just one of the regular boats that go out, we'll take them out and teach them how to sail and see if they're interested in it. Eventually, if they think they can become members, they do, but there's no obligation to become a member."

The shrine of Naughtical Culture. New club house, new food. Everyone was very nice and good. I tried the hummer; which is a drink, invented there by Sir Jerome Adams & it was perhaps one of the best drinks I've ever had. The new club will take time to get warmer finishes but still has an amazing ambiance with the addition of the upstairs bar!! The place is a great!

Beautiful place! My friend keeps his boat here and it was very clean and pleasant. Haven't gone in to eat yet but I plan on it next summer

We had the most spectacular dinner and service there on an early Saturday evening last week. After a great dinner we ordered Hummers to take outside and enjoy sitting along the waters edge. Perfect in all categories

My wife recently signed up for sailing lessons - been a dream for quite a while - and is enjoying the lessons, the learning and the experience. BONUS - during lessons, we are granted "temporary membership," and so have frequented the club 3 times - twice for dinner and once for a quick afternoon drink. The view is lovely, the people unpretentious and friendly, the service accommodating, and the food delicious. What more could you ask for? We are strongly considering joining as members once the lessons finish. Perhaps the best part? Original HUMMERS!!!!!

This is an amazing Yacht Club! Stopped on our way up the river(s) and down! Cookie makes an amazing cosmo and tops it off with a smile that lights up the room! Keith must do 100,000 steps in a shift and never forgets to check on you! He makes everyone feel special! I cannot forget to give a shoutout to Connie! She works above and beyond her duties and her scheduled hours (just to make sure everything is okay). As the daughter of a veteran I also have to appreciate their 9:00 am flag raising and as a pediatric occupational therapist, a kudos to their very active junior sailing program. You can not go wrong here!

Great club! Fun loving people. Amazing views of the Detroit River from the back patio area. Food is great. Staff are pleasant and seem happy to be there. Sailing and races are top notch.

Bayview Yacht Club celebrates women sailors with weekend event

Portrait of Marina Johnson

Female sailors ranging in age and skill are invited to celebrate the sport at Bayview Yacht Club this weekend with competitions, classes and more.

Slated for Friday through Sunday, the Bayview Yacht Club’s Women-on-Water Regatta aims to introduce women and girls to sailing and teach necessary skills for success, while allowing more seasoned sailors to compete, according to a news release.

Robbyn Morphew, event chair for the 20th annual WOW Regatta, said she is looking forward to it, especially, she says, because, she values encouraging other women of all ages to participate.

“I’m very excited about having people participate in a regatta at Bayview Yacht Club, especially focused on women and women’s sailing and encouraging as many people as possible in the metro Detroit area and surrounding areas to recognize and improve their skills in the sport," said Morphew.

“I’m 56 and I just started racing when I was 51, and I’ve had the experience to competitively race. I just don’t know many sports like that where you can enter at such a late age and get an opportunity to truly participate with world-class competitors," she said.

The event started in 2004 with one race on Lake St. Clair and has expanded over time. Morphew said they have sought out more participation each year.

“I think we continually try to reach out, to have as much participation by women in the event. Last year, we had over 100 participants and our goal this year was to have 130 participants. I feel like we’re right on target to reach that goal.”

The 2023 event will include a point-to-point course on the lake, short one-design racing on the Detroit River, and a match-racing clinic for new and seasoned female sailors.

“The WOW has evolved over the years, adapting to our audience,” said Lynn Kotwicki, founder of the WOW Clinic and Regatta and the 2022 Bayview commodore. “I am not only proud to see the continued success of the event, but also excited to welcome women and girls to Bayview for a weekend enjoying our sport.”

Major events include the race for the Natalie J. O’Niel Trophy, which awards the first place wins by an all-female crew.

“The Natalie J. O’Niel Trophy is awarded to the first place finishing team with all women," said Morphew. "This year, we’re expecting, based upon the races or regattas we have and the number of races, to have four winners with their name placed on the trophy.”

Two races will be held Sunday, including one on the Detroit River in front of Bayview Yacht Club and another farther upriver on Lake St. Clair in front of the Bayview Clubhouse. The first takes place at 10 a.m. and the second begins at 1 p.m. Following the two races, an award ceremony will take place.

Another highlight: Saturday's hands-on, match-racing clinic hosted by Dawn Riley, America’s Cup winner and executive director of Oakcliff Sailing in Oyster Bay, New York.

“In addition to the races on Sunday, we’re also having a clinic that’s being run by world-renowned woman sailor Dawn Riley. She’s going to be conducting a match-racing clinic, which is designed for two boats to participate against each other," said Morphew. Mini races will take place throughout the day on Ultimate 20 sailboats.

The Bayview Yacht Club’s Women-on-Water Regatta is open to the public. To learn more about this weekend's festivities, click here .

“I am thrilled to support this event, which was conceived by women, is run by women and is exclusively for women sailors,” said Paul Hulsey, Bayview 2023 commodore. “We are fortunate to have an excellent contingent of successful women sailors at Bayview, and I look forward to watching their ranks grow even more with younger and newer sailors coming on board.”

In conjunction with our newest exhibition at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, join us to explore Bayview Yacht Club.  The day will consist of a tour of the yacht club, lunch, and the opportunity to see three regattas throughout the day.

The yacht club was founded in 1915 with four men - Floyd Nixon, Lloyd Kurtzwarth, Perc Williamson and Paul Dietrich - who were looking for a place to fish and have fun on the water. They established Bayview in a corrugated iron shack, on a dock about a mile downstream of the present location. Within a few years, the club began participating in races. By 1928, the membership was outgrowing the shack, and the Club purchased a strip of landfill along Conner creek, the place Bayview calls home today.

  • Bayview’s Adult-Learn-to-Sail program is designed for people with little to no knowledge of sailing. Classes can accommodate new sailors or those with experience.
  • Our students are most often working professionals from around metro-Detroit. They have ranged in age from early 20s to late 60s.
  • Classes run from 6 to 8pm, each night for six classes. During the 2024 season, the two Spring Sessions will be more regular, often twice each week, for quicker learning and completion. There will also be a Summer Session (late July-early September) of six classes, once each week.
  • The sessions include classroom and dockside lectures/discussions as well as a lot of time on boats. We cover parts of the boat, rigging, points of sail, observing conditions, communication, maneuvers, knot tying, and other topics.
  • Most of the time is spent on the Detroit River in sight of the Club.
  • We have a maximum of three students with one instructor on the Club’s Ultimate 20 sailboats. The students rotate through all the positions on the boat, so yes, everyone learns to steer.
  • During on-water times we will have at least one person in a safety boat – one of the Club power skiffs. In case of breakdowns or problems, the boat is always nearby.
  • Students are required to provide their own life jackets and appropriate shoes. Bayview provides books, currently US Sailing’s “Learn Sailing Right.”
  • Instructors are Bayview members and other experienced sailors. They are chosen for their abilities to teach, communicate, sail, and help connect the students with additional sailing opportunities.
  • In addition to sailing on the Ultimate 20s, we have on occasion taken students on “big boats” that operate with more crew members for a larger crewing experience. This will depend on weather, interest, and availability of BYC larger boats and skippers.
  • While enrolled in the class, students will have a guest membership at Bayview allowing them access to the dining room and bar. All charges incurred must be paid by credit card at the time of service.
  • Students are encouraged to participate in the “hitchhiker” program which is a highly successful effort to connect non-members with boats in Bayview’s Thursday Night Off-the-Dock race series.
