A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

Divers have found five bodies in the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials told news agencies and local media Wednesday, leaving one person still missing.

Three bodies were brought ashore and two others were also found inside the shipwreck, Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, told the Associated Press, after divers were photographed by the agency unloading body bags. Cocina did not identify the deceased.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight – including a 1-year-old girl – were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Among the passengers was Mike Lynch, 59, the British founder of the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founder of the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. This summer, he was acquitted of all charges after a decadelong U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

Among those missing were Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and attorney Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York who represented Lynch in the recently concluded legal battle, and his wife, Neda. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among the survivors.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said.

'The Boys in the Boat' is narrative gold. Book Club check-in

This is KUOW's book club, and we just read through the first half of Daniel James Brown's "The Boys in the Boat" about the University of Washington crew team's quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. I'm your club guide, Katie Campbell. Let's get into it.

The term "hipster" got, ironically, popular when I was a teenager. It basically referred to someone who had discovered something cool before anyone else did — or thought they did — and thus, felt they had more of a claim over it. It could also refer to someone who believed themselves to be just a little too hip for mainstream cultural phenomena. I didn't move to Seattle until 2021, but I'm willing to bet Seattle was home to an awful lot of hipsters in the early aughts.

I mention this because I admit I expected "The Boys in the Boat" to be good. Just good. A book that had mass appeal and a heroic story that made it popular because everyone loves an underdog. I can't justify why I felt this way except to say I think I fancied myself a bit of a hipster — too cool to be riveted by a book just because George Clooney adapted it for the big screen.

Well, dear reader, I'm ready to eat a racing shell full of crow. "The Boys in the Boat" is nothing short of narrative gold. I honestly wrote in my notes, "I can barely stand to stop reading to take notes!" Forgive me in advance for a somewhat long analysis today.

Part of the success of this book is, no doubt, the story at its heart. Brown was working with a fantastic true story about young men who overcame the odds in so many ways to do something amazing during a difficult time for the country and the world. But Brown has taken a good story and, in rowing parlance, given it 10 big ones. Much of that is thanks to Brown's graceful writing style that flows easily from one thought to the next. There are plenty of digressions from the core story to explain things like the physics of rowing or the economic circumstances during the Great Depression, but they don't bog down the central narrative. Rather, they help Brown set the table for the next scene, so we, the readers, can be immersed in the action. The titular boys' work and success on the water is made the more powerful when we not only understand the physical strain but also their lives off the water. To put it simply, Brown doesn't merely tell us our main character, Joe Rantz, is in dire straits, he spit-shines the lens through which he shows us that's the case.

Consider this poignant statement as the UW boys prepare to face the East Coast schools in Poughkeepsie:

Couple Brown's writing style with the way he juxtaposes the preparations in the U.S. with those in Nazi Germany, and it's easy to see why this translated well to film. It reads like cinema, cutting away from a hard-fought win for Rantz and his fellow "frosh" against Cal to Berlin that same day as Joseph Goebbels welcomed a daughter into the world — one of six Goebbels children who would later be murdered by their parents upon Germany's defeat in World War II.

Let's talk about defeat, in one of its many contexts in "The Boys in the Boat."

Chapter 10 ends as the UW rowing teams win the freshman and junior varsity races in Poughkeepsie, having just defeated some of the best teams in the country. Joe Rantz and our frosh boys, now sophomores, proved themselves in the JV boat. But alas, head coach Al Ulbrickson does not return to Seattle with a clean sweep of victories over the East Coast elites — oh, and Cal. The varsity squad he subbed in over Rantz's crew lost, and badly. I think we all know how this story ends — I won't spoil it for anyone, just in case — but it's interesting to look back on the process by which Ulbrickson picked his historic crew. To see the faults and do a little Monday-morning quarterbacking is stressful as a reader. That's in part because we know how hard Rantz has worked to get to this point, and how well he stacks up to wisdom like this about UW racing shell-builder George Pocock:

As I read that passage, my heart swelled with a sort of pride in these young men who lived long before I was born. It made me think of the comradery and sportsmanship and goodness we see at the Olympics, that we just saw throughout the Paris Olympics. And I think of the, frankly, odd ducks who might call themselves "alpha males" today and how they would never last in a racing shell with Ulbrickson's boys. They wouldn't have the heart for it.

That's what Brown has given us: a story with heart. It's not just about the sport, the rowing, the brute strength of the boys but also about family, struggle, and their sensitivity as incredibly young men living hard lives while trying to accomplishment something great.

I could go on, but I won't — because there's more reading to be done.

Rescuers searching for the sixth body after Mike Lynch’s Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Sicily said they would need a ‘crystal ball’ to find out when it will be found.

Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service, gave the update as the search continues for a fourth day.

A total of five bodies have been found so far, with emergency services saying they believe identities are tech tycoon Mr Lynch , Morgan Stanley International bank chairperson Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife, Neda Morvillo. Hannah Lynch, Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, is still missing.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas, which was recovered on Monday, is the only one that has been formally identified.

Mr Cari said: ‘We would need a crystal ball to know when we’ll be able to find the next body. It’s very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours.’

Mike Lynch ‘retreated to his Suffolk farm’ before trip to Sicily

Mike Lynch who is was killed in the sinking of the Bayesian had recently returned to live at his Suffolk farm following his 12-year legal battle.

After he had been acquitted over multiple fraud charges in the US, he returned to his 2,500 acre farm in Wickham Market, Suffolk.

Speaking of his return, he told the East Anglian Daily Times: ‘It was one of those lovely English grey days. 

‘I finally made it home and made it up into Suffolk and that was finally the end of the journey, so that was brilliant.’

He lived in Suffolk for 34 years and moved into the farm in 2009.

‘The one thing you find you want to hear about is the most simple things from home. 

‘I just wanted to hear “the river is flooded today” or “the electricity went off” or “someone’s cow escaped” – all those things that bring you back to the real world.

‘I was lucky enough to get back to Suffolk in June. It has been a total delight to be back.

‘The lovely thing I find about Suffolk is there is still a real sense of community there. You get to know lots of people doing all sorts of things.’

Crew and passengers ‘had no warning’ about the storm

Those on board the Bayesian yacht likely ‘had no warning at all’ about the storm which caused the boat to sink, an expert has said.

Oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall said although the vessel was legally obliged to have a watchkeeper, it would have been hard to spot approaching storms at night.

He told the BBC : ‘There wasn’t a lot of time for anyone who was on watch to respond.’

Yacht victim was ‘giant in financial services’

Investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown paid tribute to Jonathan Bloomer, who was previously a board director at the firm, as a ‘giant in financial services’.

The group said: ‘We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event.

‘Jonathan was a giant in financial services, and we remember him fondly at Hargreaves Lansdown as someone who made a major impact on the business with his wealth of experience when he served on the board from 2006-2013 including as our senior independent director.

‘We in the Hargreaves Lansdown family will miss him and our thoughts go out to his loved ones, as well as those of the others lost in this awful disaster.’

Jonathan Bloomer embodied ‘spirit of kindness’

The chief executive of Morgan Stanley has paid tribute to Jonathan Bloomer who died in the sinking of the Bayesian.

Ted Pick said: ‘We are deeply saddened by this tragic news.

‘Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the Bloomer family and all those affected by this tragedy.

‘Jonathan’s leadership and experience helped the firm manage a period of complex change for our international businesses.

‘He has been a friend and mentor to many and we will all greatly miss his wise counsel and spirit of kindness.’

Family of Jonathan and Judy Bloomer say they were ‘incredible people’

The family of Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy said in a statement: ‘We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

‘We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services and everyone who helped tirelessly in this rescue operation.

‘Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

‘Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

Rescue workers ‘need a crystal ball’ to know when another body will be found

Emergency workers ‘need a crystal ball’ to know when and if the next body will be recovered, an Italian fire service spokesman said.

Luca Cari said: ‘We would need a crystal ball to know when we’ll be able to find the next body.

‘It’s very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours.’

Formal identification of bodies could stretch into next week

Formal identification of bodies retrieved from the Bayesian could last until next week, officials who spoke to The Times said.

Formal identification by relatives will be carried out once a day, according to the officials.

The bodies have all been informally identified by authorities who brought them to the shore at Porticello.

Mike Lynch’s Autonomy co-founder has paid tribute to him, saying ‘the world has lost a genius’.

David Tabizel wrote in a post on X: ‘It looks like we’ve lost our dear Dr Mike Lynch. RIP. The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man.’

Italian fire crew details rescue operation

The Italian fire service has shared an update about the rescue operation after the fifth body was recovered from the Bayesian. 

Vigili del Fuoco posted a picture of their equipment on X, adding: ‘The dives in the sea began in the early hours of the morning and continue for the search and recovery of the last missing person.’

‘The body of the fifth victim was recovered and brought ashore by the divers,’ they added.

Campaign to scrap US-UK extradition treaty in memory of Mike Lynch

A campaign has been launched ‘in memory’ of Mike Lynch – ‘Britain’s Bill Gates’ – to abolish the extradition treaty between the UK and the US.

The tech magnate was charged with fraud in the US in 2018. For five years, he fought being sent there for trial until he was finally extradited in 2023.

As soon as the US Marshals took him into custody at London Heathrow, he was chained and bundled on board a United Airlines flight.

Mr Lynch was cleared of all charges – only a few weeks before his superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily.

Upon his return to the UK, he used his legal case to show why the extradition treaty between the two nations should be scrapped.

Conservative MP Sir David Davis said the treaty, which was implemented in 2003, lopsided in favour of the Americans and does not provide adequate protections for British citizens.

The politician, who had taken an interest in Mr Lynch’s extradition ordeal and developed a close relationship with him, he viewed it as a ‘duty of care’ to the late billionaire’s memory ‘to actually maintain that campaign to get it [the extradition treaty] abolished’.

He told GB News: ‘We need to get a grip of this. Mike, when he’d won his case, almost the first thing he did was ring me up and say, “we’re going to have to defeat this treaty, we’re going to have to overcome this treaty and get it changed for the better”.’

Will the sunken Bayesian be raised from the sea?

Plans to raise the superyacht from the Mediterranean seabed are ‘not on the agenda,’ a spokesperson from the Italian Coastguard has said.

Vincenzo Zagarola said: ‘This is not a topic on the agenda. It will be, but not now.’

He also said that the Italian Coastguard’s working theory is still that the missing woman is inside the boat.

Tributes continue to pour in from industry leaders, colleagues, and friends, highlighting the profound impact Mike Lynch had on those around him.

A pioneering figure in the tech industry, the 59-year-old was known for his role in founding Autonomy, one of the most successful software companies in the UK.

Lord John Browne, chair of Beyond Net Zero said Britain has lost a ‘human being of great ability’.

In a tribute on X, he reflected on Mr Lynch’s unique vision and leadership.

‘Mike Lynch should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK,’ he wrote.

‘His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally. I send my condolences to those close to him. We have lost a human being of great ability.’

Tributes paid to ‘inspiring figure’ Mike Lynch

Tributes have been paid to ‘Britain’s Bill Gates’ Mike Lynch, whose body was recovered from the Mediterranean seabed after his yacht Bayesian sank on Monday.

His death has been described as ‘unbelievably tragic’, while friends remember him as ‘an aspiring figure’.

As his loved ones come to terms with the loss, more and more will pay their last goodbye in the form of a tribute.

Final person yet to be found is a woman

The Italian Coastguard confirmed to the PA news agency that the sixth and final person yet to be found was a woman.

Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chair Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo, were lost when the Bayesian sank at around 5am on Monday.

Five bodies identified in Bayesian yacht sinking with sixth still missing

Five bodies recovered from the wreck of the Bayesian have been identified in the last hour.

Tech magnate Mike Lynch, known as ‘Britain’s Bill Gates’ is among those who died in the tragedy after his remains were retrieved in the last 24 hours and taken to a mortuary in Sicily.

Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo have also been identified.

Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah remains unaccounted for and divers continue the search operation.

Who are divers searching for?

‘For a few seconds the baby was in the water but she saved her’

An Italian doctor has revealed more details of a British mother’s fight to keep her one-year-old baby alive moments after the Bayesian capsized in the early hours of Monday.

Earlier this week, Metro UK reported how Charlotte Emsley used every bit of her strength to hold her daughter Sofia above the water.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, of Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo, where they were rushed to, confirmed they are both in good condition.

It was just two minutes after falling asleep with her baby, that they were both in the water, he said after speaking with her.

The doctor added: ‘Obviously the mother and the husband were so shaken by what has happened, it was a tragedy for them.

‘She told me that, two minutes after falling asleep with her baby, they were in the water, she did not understand how this happened, it went dark.

‘Her partner was not with her, he was in another room.

‘She held the child high in her arms above the waves – for a few seconds the baby was in the water but she saved her.

‘She sometimes cried for her friends in the hospital.’

Fifth body recovered from Bayesian yacht

A fifth body has been recovered from  Mike Lynch’s  Bayesian superyacht and brought to shore this morning.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returned with a blue body bag to Porticello at just after 8.45am local time.

Divers reached the wreckage of the vessel, about 150 feet underwater, off the coast of Sicily, where they had spotted the remains yesterday.

Five bodies have now been recovered as Italian teams continue to search for the sixth missing person.

Bayesian superyacht is ‘unsinkable’, CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

There are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian, which sank in a storm off the coast of Porticello, in Sicily, according to the chief executive of the firm which manufactures them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, stressed that such vessels are ‘unsinkable’ and ‘the safest in the most absolute sense’.

‘This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact,’ he told Sky News .

Constantino added: ‘Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built.

‘And as Perini is a sailing ship… sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever.’

Italian prosecutors continue to investigate the incident as the search for one more missing person entered its fourth day.

A team of investigators from the UK also arrived at the scene earlier this week and have started looking into the events surrounding the sinking of the Bayesian.

Next week, when the 37 th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup kicks off in Barcelona with its opening ceremony, the contest that began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight between the fastest British and American sloops (the yacht America won handily) will come back to Europe for the first time in 14 years.

The move to the Catalan capital from the 2021 event in New Zealand will make it more accessible to sailing fans in Europe, and even North Americans who want to view the fast, technical AC75 foiling boats in person. Barcelona has been preparing itself for a surge of spectators for the “return” of the Cup, which was held twice in Valencia, Spain, in the aughts.

The America’s Cup may be billed as “the race with no second place,” but it takes three months of racing and four events for one of five Challenger teams to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, and that winner will race Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final. The racing runs from August through October, and this year includes a first-time all-women’s America’s Cup as well as an event for the world’s best youth sailors.

Having Barcelona as a venue was a smart move, partly for the gorgeous beaches fronting the race course on the Med. But there is also the city’s magnificent architecture and sense of history as well as vibrant arts, culture and, of course, no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants.

There are many five-star hotels in the area, but the smartest and most thrilling way to see racing is by water. The vessel options are wide-ranging—from weeklong superyacht charters to luxury suites on a cruise ships to day trips on sailboats with Michelin-starred cuisine. Many can be combined with on-land stays and even cruises to other parts of Spain as part of the itineraries.

One important note: Four zones adjoining the race course allow spectator boats. Before chartering a vessel, be sure to find out which zone the boat will operate in, because that impacts how close you are to the racing.

Here are 9 options to suit the most avid Cup aficionados or those visiting Barcelona who want to sip champagne and watch the AC75 foiling boats battle it out.

Superyacht ‘Resilience’

Edmiston is offering charters aboard the 212-foot Resilience during the America’s Cup. The ISA-built superyacht, designed by Enrico Gobbi, features a mosaic-tiled pool, circular fire pit and a BBQ for a ringside lunch. Post-race pampering comes via the steam room, sundeck jacuzzi and gym, and there’s even a self-playing Edelweiss piano and projector for evening entertainment. The vessel sleeps 12 across seven cabins. From September 16, weekly charters start at about $645,000 (€600,000).

Explora Journeys

The soon-to-be-launched Explora II looks very much like its sistership, the Explora I : onyx finishes, self-playing Steinways, on-deck Technogym bikes, a spa with a Himalayan salt room, Dunhill cigar den and a wine cellar boasting decades-old Chateau Latour. With 461 luxury suites, how was the Explora II chosen to become an America’s Cup viewing platform? The idea came from the top down. 

“I love sailing and believe the Med is the most beautiful sea on earth,” Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division of MSC Group, told Robb Report during a visit aboard Explora I in Barcelona. “We thought if only our customers could also experience [the America’s Cup], we can call it the ocean state of mind.” 

Explora II launches in mid-September, with itineraries planned to coincide with the different Cup events. On October 6, the vessel will be in port for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and Puig Women’s Races. Guests can take a walk to the official race village and experience its excitement before watching the races from their suites. A 10-night journey starts from $5,210 per guest.

The Almanac Sailing Experience

Barcelona’s Almanac hotel has a romantic-gastronomic experience that offers guests front-row seats on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 sailboat with a capacity for 10 guests. Besides the racing, the package includes two nights at the hotel. The boat comes with the hotel’s branded slippers and Jimmy Boyd bespoke amenities. Enjoy a selection of customized Cava Bellinis from the pop-up bar. Chefs from the hotels’ restaurant will also serve up shrimp salad and fennel ceviche paired with organic Spanish wines. The boat can be chartered every Saturday from August 31 to October 26. The Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin starts on August 29 and lasts through Sept. 8. There’s also the Puig Women’s Race (first all-female America’s Cup in its 171-year history) and, of course, the America’s Cup finals in October. Prices start at $2,940 per couple. 

Superyacht ‘C’

For a majestic week-long cruise that incorporates America’s Cup summer races and possible side itineraries in Costa Dorada, Sitges and Formentera, Camper & Nicholsons’ expansive 177-ft C is the flashy option, defined by Minotti furniture, lacquered panels and a hamman. It also sleeps 12 in six cabins that feature a master and two VIP suites. Its chase boat also offers a great opportunity for side trips. Weekly charters from Sept. 18-October 31 run from about $513,000 or €400,000.

Sailing Yacht ‘Imagine’

UK adventure specialists Pelorus offer a private seat on an elegant sailing boat seeped in America’s Cup history. Built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, Imagine is a 110-footer that served as an official viewing platform for the America’s Cup in Auckland, but it has also completed three global circumnavigations. Beyond its sailing chops, it’s a beautiful vessel, with a blonde, teak-lined deck, large salon and dining area, and three cabins for sleeping seven guests. It will be available from October 12 for the America’s Cup final. Pelorus is also offering to bookend the week with trips to Majorca and Ibiza. About $101,000 (£79,121)

Superyacht ‘Diane’

Also available from Edmiston, the 141-ft Diane can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms for the week. The interior is all about soft hues, featuring cream leather and white marble, boasting a bar and plenty of outdoor seating for watching the races. For the non-race legs, guests can take to the water via the large beach club, complete with seabobs and wakeboards. It has a Balearics license, making a hop to Ibiza or Majorca a possibility. Weekly charter rates from September 23 run about $150,000 per week (€140,000)

Black Tomato Cup Package

Incorporating a city-stay, Black Tomato’s America’s Cup getaway includes a day’s private day charter to view the race, plus five nights at the Mandarin Oriental as well as visiting the regatta course and different bases of the America’s Cup teams for an insider’s look at the operations and technology. As a dayboat, its Bali Yacht Saxador 400 GTO can accommodate 11 guests. It sets sail from Port Olympic, giving guests a sweeping view of the city on one side and the regatta course on the other. The boat has access to the blue area (for preferred charter boats) on the front line. From $12,750 per person, based on two people.

Superyacht ‘Quasar’

Camper & Nicholsons recently introduced the 153-foot Quasar to the charter market and what a great way to end the Med season than by viewing the America’s Cup. It has six cabins (including two master suites) that can accommodate 12 guests, along excellent outdoor seating, an upper salon that joins the aft deck area for viewing the races or dining al-fresco. The beach club has a large selection of water toys. Visits to scenic Med ports around Barcelona are also possible on the week’s charter, which start at about $232,000 (€210,000).  

Superyacht ‘Kiawah’

For front row seats on day charters in the blue zone (the third-closest area to the races), official charter partner ac37 Sailcharters offers different types of vessels and packages. The 110-foot Kiawah features a cocktail lunch on board, a specialized lecture from an expert sailor, and an AV system to follow the race in real time. From August 22 through October 11, daily rates are about $34,000 (€30,800) and during the America’s Cup finals October 12-27, rates move to about $41,000 (€37,400).

Our mission: promote safety at sea, make yachting a pleasure, assist another boater in distress, and do all within our power to preserve the property and lives of others when endangered. The Bremerton Yacht Club, located on Phinney Bay, was founded on May 25, 1929, and this year celebrated our 95th birthday. We are a private club, dedicated to our members’ enjoyment of boating through our facilities, services, and social activities. The Bremerton Yacht Club is proud of our long-standing commitment to our members and the entire boating community. Our desire is to preserve our club facility and marina as an enjoyable nautical environment which enables all members to maximize interaction with other members, family, and friends through a common love of boating and water-related activities.
