What Our Customers Say:

"We had an amazing time sailing the sunset with our captain, Mike. He was a very experienced sailor and a knowledgeable person about the area...Definitely a must do when in the area!

Newport Sailing School is a great place to learn to sail or see the harbor. Mike took excellent care of our son’s safety and ensured he had the knowledge to become certified. An amazing experience!

My family of five had a great private sail today. Mike was friendly and expert. We learned a lot about sailing and about Newport history and landmarks... Highly recommend Mike and Newport Sailing.

Boat show to bike ride: What's happening this weekend across Newport County

Portrait of Will Richmond

Summer's last gasp is here.

This coming weekend marks the second to last weekend of the season, so why not get outside and enjoy all it has to offer?

Head down to downtown Newport and hit the docks for the annual Newport International Boat Show, load up the bike and head to Island Park for some car-free riding, or enjoy the bounty of the season at the Tiverton Farmer Market.

These are just a couple of options to get the most out of the final days of summer, so take a look at what's happening and start making your plans.

Newport International Boat Show

The Newport International Boat Show, one of the largest and most prestigious boat shows in the country, runs through out the weekend, spanning over 15 acres with six connecting show sites within historic downtown Newport, Rhode Island. Walk the docks and view a spectacular display of new sailboats and powerboats, some making their first-ever debut in the United States. This year there’s an acre of even more boats to see throughout the show, including a brokerage basin, with both power and sailboats ranging up to 110 feet now on display for the first time.

Visit  newportboatshow.com , for more information.

Puddingstone music series

The Puddingstone music series continues in September by welcoming The Passero Trio to Greenvale Vineyards for a concert on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

“Kaleidoscope” conveys the idea of a rich and varied artistic and musical experience with different styles and eras coming together in a vibrant and dynamic way. The trio offers a great range of musical forms and shifting perspectives within the program, much like how a kaleidoscope presents ever-changing patterns and colors: from Johann Michael Haydn’s "Divertimento in C”, to Piazolla’s “Oblivion” and Erwin Schulhoff’s “Concertino” and more.

Doors open 5 p.m. A cash bar will be open for drinks purchases and complementary small bites will be served. Advance tickets available at  PuddingstoneFestival.com

Summa Sizzla

Get ready to celebrate the end of summer in style at the Tiverton Farmers Market's SUMMA SIZZLA at Tiverton Town Farm Recreational Area, 3588 Main Road, Rt.77. on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This special event will be a grand salute to All Things Grilled, featuring the best flavors of the season.

Come and enjoy the delicious harvest of summer, including a wide variety of meats, seafood, fresh vegetables, and fruits. Whether you're looking for vegetarian, gluten-free or vegan options, our vendors have something for everyone. Arrive hungry and be prepared to explore and enjoy new dishes.

The event will be set to the lively sounds of Willie T & Doctor X, whose music will create the perfect atmosphere for this community gathering.

This event is free and open to the public, with ample free parking available in the back lots. Please follow the parking signs, and if needed, overflow parking is also provided in the north lot near the playground. Families, children, and individuals of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to enjoy this 2-mile expanse of coastal road transformed into a safe and enjoyable route for non-motorized transportation.

The car-free route has no prescribed starting or ending point, allowing all to join where they meet it. The route encompasses Park Ave from just East of Mason Ave, through to the railroad overpass at Anthony Road (entrance to Common Fence Point), and connecting directly with the shared-use path to safely cross the Sakonnet River Bridge to and from Tiverton. Pack the car and head on an adventure with these 5 scenic drives to take this summer in RI

Portrait of Jonny Williams

Summer in Rhode Island is a time for music festivals, leisurely days at the beach and, of course, Del’s Lemonade. It's also a good season to roll down the windows and enjoy a drive around the state – even if it may require packing a lunch.

Natives will be familiar with some of the state’s best-known scenic drives. But there are other lesser-known jaunts that offer equally satisfying experiences. Here is a list of five scenic drives to take this summer and get to know Rhode Island better.

Ocean Drive in Newport

Distance: 10 miles

No list of scenic drives in Rhode Island would be complete without Newport’s Ocean Drive. The route was featured last year in Travel + Leisure’s top road trips in the U.S., and for good reason: it features Gilded Age mansions, epic ocean vistas and state parks. Visitors can treat themselves at one of Newport’s fine dining restaurants or get their caffeine fix from one of the many coffee shops in town.

Start near Bowen’s Wharf on America’s Cup Avenue, head down to the intersection with Thames Street, past The Sailing Museum, and Wellington Avenue and work your way counterclockwise along the coast. You can also start on Bellevue Avenue and work your way clockwise.

Along the way, stop for a tour of Newport’s famous mansions – like The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms or Rosecliff – or a picnic at Fort Adams State Park . If you’re feeling like stretching your legs, try walking Newport’s Cliff Walk and enjoy the ocean breeze while catching glimpses of some of the mansions.

Ocean Road in Narragansett

Distance: 6 miles

For those who want to stay away from Newport’s crowds but still enjoy the ocean, Narragansett is the place to go. This quaint town in Rhode Island’s south doesn’t boast mansions and cliff walks but offers unbeaten access to the water. Make sure to stop by Brickley’s Ice Cream for some of the best frozen desserts in the state on your way back home.

Start where Beach Street meets Ocean Road, following the road south through The Towers, Narragansett’s unmistakable landmark, and along the coast past picturesque neighborhoods with historic homes. The road ends at the Point Judith Lighthouse , originally built in 1806. Visitors will have their pick of beaches if they want to take a dip in the ocean: Narragansett Town Beach, Scarborough State Beach and Camp Cronin are all nearby.

Route 77 in Tiverton and Little Compton

Distance: 9 miles

Rhode Island may be known as the Ocean State, but that doesn’t mean it lacks country charm. Take Tiverton and Little Compton, two towns in Newport County where you can find chicken and alpaca farms. You can follow Route 77 – also known as Main Road – through both towns, taking in the countryside views. Stop at Coastal Roasters for a vanilla cardamom latte or at Evelyn’s Drive-In for a lobster roll, or check out the fresh produce at Walker’s Roadside Stand . Fogland Beach is also along the route, and if you feel like hiking, Pardon Gray Preserve has 230 acres of land with trails to get lost in.

Start at Tiverton Four Corners , where you can peruse antiques shops, grab a bite from Groundswell’s European-inspired menu and enjoy dessert at Gray’s Ice Cream . Work your way down Route 77/Main Road and veer right onto Sakonnet Point Road, following it to the coast. Take a stroll around Sakonnet Point, where you can sometimes spot harbor seals.

Block Island

Distance: Varies

Few things are more romantic than a ride on a ferry to Block Island : the ocean breeze, the waves crashing against the boat, the views of open water all around you. Once you arrive you can go straight to Ballard’s Beach, a five-minute walk from the ferry, or drive north to Mansion Beach, a less-crowded spot a few miles away – though beware, there are no bathrooms or other facilities there. If you are looking for more scenic stops, visit Mohegan Bluffs, where you can take in the ocean views as far as your eye can see, or stop by North Light or Southeast Lighthouse, two beautiful historical lighthouses. If you want to truly feel the ocean breeze, rent a bike or a moped and ride around the island .

Ferries depart daily from Point Judith starting in the morning and running until the evening. If you are planning to bring a vehicle, plan ahead: This is the only ferry that takes cars and requires reservations. A high-speed ferry – departing from both Point Judith and Newport – takes passengers to the island and back. Passengers can pay a bit extra to bring a bicycle to get around the island.

Great Road in Lincoln

Distance: 3 miles

Not all road trips need be long to be worthwhile. Take Great Road in Lincoln, a 3-mile stretch north of Providence. It is considered one of the oldest thoroughfares in the country, boasting about 300 years of history in a compact stretch of land. Its historical structures range from the Arnold House (circa 1696) to the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop (circa 1880), where you can take classes on hand-forging. The main attraction is the Hearthside House (circa 1810), a stone mansion built by Stephen Hopkins Smith – with lottery winnings, according to folklore – to woo a woman from Providence. The woman, however, rejected Smith’s gesture, leading the mansion to be known as “Heartbreak House.”

Start at Gateway to Great Road , near the intersection of Great Road and Front Street. Along the way stop by Chase Farm for an easy stroll or the farm stand at Butterfly Farm, where visitors can take pictures by the twin silos. In about half a mile, turn right to follow Great Road north. If you want to visit Arnold Bakery, founded circa 1874, turn left onto Wilbur Road followed by another left at Old Louisquisset Pike. Visitors who want to extend the trip – by car or foot – can also swing by Lincoln Woods State Park nearby.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

newport sailboat rides

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

newport sailboat rides

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

newport sailboat rides

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

newport sailboat rides

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

newport sailboat rides

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

newport sailboat rides

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

newport sailboat rides

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Newport Harbor’s Ella Olson finishes with flair versus rival CdM

Newport Harbor's Ella Olson finds a gap for a kill between Molly Machoskie and Savi Dennis.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The longer the match went on, the freer Ella Olson swung.

Starting the third set, the Newport Harbor sophomore outside hitter elevated her play even further. She tossed the ball into the air and struck a service ace that landed on the back line.

Two points later, another serve crawled over the net for a point. Five points into the set, Olson had churned out four aces, a harbinger of things to come as far as her impact.

Newport Harbor's Piper Coady (19) puts a kill past Corona del Mar.

Olson provided eight of her team-leading 16 kills for the host Sailors in the third set, as Newport Harbor went on to sweep Corona del Mar 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 on Tuesday in the first meeting of the Battle of the Bay girls’ volleyball series.

“We were up 2-0 [on sets],” said Olson, who had seven of her eight kills in the final set after CdM had rallied to even the score at 7-7. “We had nothing to lose, so why not go out with a bang.”

The student section was into it. At one point, a group of boys spilled out onto the floor in front of the bleachers, sitting in a straight-line formation and acting as if they were rowing a boat in appreciation of the Sailors’ work.

Newport Harbor's Ella Olson (2) taps a ball over the net past Matisse Robertson.

“I think a Newport Harbor volleyball crowd’s a pretty intelligent one,” Newport Harbor coach Andrew Mabry said. “I think our team plays really good volleyball when we’re at our best, and I think the crowd kind of fed off that tonight, and we fed off that.”

Mabry credited the ball distribution for unlocking Olson, as the Sailors got their middle blockers involved early.

“Ella Olson is the real deal,” Mabry said. “She’s really, really good. It’s a team game to allow people to be successful in the areas that they can be successful, but Ella does a lot of little things really well. Her defense tonight was great, her serve receive was great, she had a couple service runs, she got some blocks, and the offense is kind of always there.”

Samantha Fleischli had six kills and two block assists, Sadie Henderson added four kills and a pair of block assists, and Morgan Scheumann chipped in with three kills and two block assists. Campbell Kelly also had three kills, including the match-clinching tip for Newport Harbor (10-3, 3-1 in the Sunset League).

Newport Harbor's Sadie Henderson (13) jousts against Corona del Mar's Molly Machoskie.

Freshman pin hitter Piper Coady finished with 11 kills for Newport Harbor. Talea Berry contributed 29 assists and three aces, and libero Ava Christiano also had three aces.

“I think serve receive is a big part of that [success], and I think we did good today with that,” Berry said. “It falls into offense.”

Middle blocker Matisse Robertson provided four kills and three block assists for CdM (8-11, 1-2). Outside hitter Sofia Dajnowiec had four kills and two block assists. Setter Anna Wagner had eight assists and a team-best four aces. Liberos Riley Card and Sam Mason combined for five additional aces.

Newport Harbor's Evie Jorgensen (22) and Reagan Bland (10) react.

The crosstown rivals will meet again at CdM on Oct. 4.

Corona del Mar expects to get reinforcements soon when outside hitter Casi Doll and libero Makenna Smith, who transferred from Tarbut V’Torah and Mater Dei, respectively, become eligible. The mandatory sit-out period will be completed on Sept. 14.

“It was cool,” CdM coach Aubrey Caires said of her initial experience in the Battle of the Bay. “I feel like the girls took the challenge on, and I don’t think that they were overly nervous. I don’t think that contributed to their playing. I think they went out there and did what they could. For me, it was really cool to see them thrive in that environment. It feels like a high-level college game, so it was fun.”

Corona del Mar's Riley Card (3) makes a lunging dig during the Battle of the Bay.

Additional results from Tuesday:

Costa Mesa 3, Westminster 1: Aubrey Spallone had 19 kills and three aces to lead the Mustangs to a 25-10, 27-29, 25-23, 25-23 win on Tuesday in a Golden West League match at home.

Isabel Ortega-Davidson contributed 24 assists, eight kills and two aces for Costa Mesa (10-6, 3-1). Gracie Glass had eight kills, and Lucca Miller added seven kills. Brooke Mehanna dished out 23 assists.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Tarbut V’Torah 0: Chara Wondercheck had 15 kills, seven digs and two blocks, as the visiting Tritons swept the Lions 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 in a San Joaquin League match on Tuesday.

Addie Roberson handed out 28 assists for Pacifica Christian (10-6, 2-0). Emma Hartman provided five aces and two blocks.
